An Eco-Design Strategy for the Future
Heraclius

Emperor of the Byzantine Empire
He was responsible for introducing
Greek as the Eastern Roman
Empire's official language.
From Sustainability to Nanotechnology
Sustainability is the method of
harvesting or using a resource so
that the resource is not depleted
or permanently damaged.
Nanotechnology aims at the
design and creation of functional
materials, structures, devices and
systems through direct control of
matter on the nanometer length
scale and exploitation of novel
phenomena and properties on this
length scale and it is not as
complicated as it seems.
The word «Nanotechnology » was seen for the first
time in a dictionnary in 1974.

• Design to reduce pollution
• Design to improve functionality
• Design to increase products lifespan
• Design to reduce energy consumption
• Design to reduce waste production
• Design to improve water usage
• Design with reuse/recycling in mind

Several years ago, I came to the conclusion that
interventions by interior and industrial designers,
as well as architects, were highly important in
ensuring the balance between our material culture
and a more sustainable society. Unfortunately, that
came with a cost that several clients are not yet
ready to pay.
All Rights Reserved, Claude Bérubé
Just have a look at the Copenhagen Conference
on Climate held in December 2010 and you can
see the concerns of countries wanting to balance
infinite human needs based on continual
unsustainable economic growth, with the social
equity our environment requires.
And now, with the 2016 elections in USA, changes
to environment situation are not expected to get
better
All Rights Reserved, Claude Bérubé
It became evident to me that economic concerns
were not going to fade out and be replaced by a
sudden desire to become unconditionally
sustainable.
The fact remains that the ‘deciders’ will not
subscribe to a solution that leaves them in an
economically weak position.
I believe that the designer’s ethical concerns
contribute to the authenticity and elevation of our
profession, and therefore decided to investigate
other avenues. Nanotechnology is one of
these avenues.

Nanotechnology & Nanometer
You can measure nanotechnology
If the relative size of a
nanoparticle was compared to a

could be compared to earth.

Early Nano Object
In fact, some applications of nanotechnology date from the early
Roman ages. The Lycurgus Cup is one example, whereby gold
and silver nanoparticles present in the glass cause this ancient
object to change color when subjected to different angles of light.
An accidental result in this case. British Museum

Nanotechnology and Textiles
I believe that nanotechnology will lead to dramatic
changes in the decreasing use of:
• Natural resources,
• Water,
• Energy production/distribution.
Nanotechnology holds the promise of contributing
significantly to sustainability, based on enhanced
properties with decreased use of materials, energy
and reduced waste.
All Rights Reserved, Claude Bérubé
Nanotechnology also forces us to review over a
century of industrialisation but also requires us to
reconsider irreversibly our cross-disciplinary
approaches and perhaps brings up the need for
integrating a more scientific approach in the
design-development-construction process.

“When the nanotech wave comes to shore,
it will bring rapid, monumental, inescapable
and potentially devastating change.
Nanotechnology is a 'platform technology,
meaning that it has the potential to alter or
completely transform the current state of
the art in every major industrial sector…”

How can nanotechnology be
incorporated into design?
Nanotechnology developments will have a
major impact on how we design
residential and public places and, perhaps
more particularly, hospitals, hotels,
resorts, restaurants, offices or cinemas.

Aerogel
All Rights Reserved, Claude Bérubé
What is Aerogel?
Aerogel is made from Silicon Dioxide, the
same material as ordinary glass, only
1,000 times less dense. Aerogel (also
called ‘frozen smoke’ because of its
hazy blue appearance), is a truly
remarkable material:
It is the lightest and lowest-density solid
known to exist. Being the world’s lightest
known solid, it weighs only three times more
than air, Aerogel is also the strongest material
known to man.

Malaysian Professor
Halimaton’s contribution to
the field of science is in
discovering a cost effective
way to turn discarded rice
husks into Maerogel
(Malaysian Aerogel)
What is Maerogel?
ProfessorHalimaton
The silica in rice husks is extracted
to produce Maerogel, and her
discovery cuts the cost of producing
aerogel by 80 % making it affordable
for common commercial and
residential use.

Professor Halimaton’s
discovery seems to have
disappeared from the
radars for a few years now
and the expensive Aerogel
is more popular then ever.
Would anyone know why?

Zaha Hadid used Okagel, a derivative of aerogel to insulate and create a
natural lighting in the cavities of the metal structure of the three-story museum .
All Rights Reserved, Claude Bérubé
The use of Okagel (aerogel) for the 4,300 square
meters museum is particularly suitable for a
building that requires optimal lighting conditions,
energy savings and a higher degree of
environmental comfort.

The Eli & Edythe Broad Museum
designed by architect Zaha Hadid
Through the use of this derivative of the Aerogel, the
museum is flooded with filtered light of exceptional
quality on its three floors, unparalleled thermal and
sound insulation and the energy savings that the
architect was looking for in this relatively cold climate.
There is no doubt in my mind that this product will
soon find its place and become a standard in the
construction of shopping centres, libraries and
hospitals.

More than twelve years after it
opened, the Jubilee Church in Rome
looks as good as new. Some might
call its still-pristine condition a miracle,
but the true cause is a material that
cleans both itself and the air around it.
The brilliant whiteness of the shells is
due to the presence of nano particles
of titanium dioxide (Ti[O.sub.2]) in the

  • 20. What is Aerogel? Aerogel is made from Silicon Dioxide, the same material as ordinary glass, only 1,000 times less dense. Aerogel (also called ‘frozen smoke’ because of its hazy blue appearance), is a truly remarkable material: It is the lightest and lowest-density solid known to exist. Being the world’s lightest known solid, it weighs only three times more than air, Aerogel is also the strongest material known to man. PRICE ISAN ISSUE All Rights Reserved, Claude Bérubé
  • 21. Malaysian Professor Halimaton’s contribution to the field of science is in discovering a cost effective way to turn discarded rice husks into Maerogel (Malaysian Aerogel) What is Maerogel? ProfessorHalimaton The silica in rice husks is extracted to produce Maerogel, and her discovery cuts the cost of producing aerogel by 80 % making it affordable for common commercial and residential use. GOOD NEWS All Rights Reserved, Claude Bérubé Professor Halimaton’s discovery seems to have disappeared from the radars for a few years now and the expensive Aerogel is more popular then ever. Would anyone know why? BUT…

The Eli & Edythe Broad Museum designed by architect Zaha Hadid Through the use of this derivative of the Aerogel, the museum is flooded with filtered light of exceptional quality on its three floors, unparalleled thermal and sound insulation and the energy savings that the architect was looking for in this relatively cold climate. There is no doubt in my mind that this product will soon find its place and become a standard in the construction of shopping centres, libraries and hospitals. Some might call its still-pristine condition a miracle, but the true cause is a material that cleans both itself and the air around it. The brilliant whiteness of the shells is due to the presence of nano particles of titanium dioxide (Ti[O.sub.2]) in the concrete. All Rights Reserved, Claude Bérubé
