Purpose of the 2014 Update:
•To establish a “complete and comfortable” biking
network
•Special focus on the top ten employers and recreational
& student bicyclists (about 60% of bicyclist in Evanston)

Census/Bike Survey #1 Data
U.S. Census
•Evanston Residents using bikes as a means of transportation has
increased 46% since 2000
Bike Survey #1 (over 500 respondents)
•64% identified themselves as recreational/casual bicyclist
•Lack of bike lanes/unsafe bike lanes were the number 1 & 2 challenges
•80% are concerned about motorists not sharing the road with bicyclists
•72% are concerned about negative interactions between motorists and
bicyclists
•61% are concerned about bicyclists not following traffic laws
•75% are concerned about bicyclists riding on sidewalks

Considerations for Survey #2
Based on data and Survey #1 further input is sought by Survey
#2 that addresses the following:
• Development of more comfortable corridors to address the 60%
recreational/student riders
• Expansion of bike parking facilities and locations
• Development of harmony and safety between the various modes
using education, expansion and/or restriction

Please note that the survey is designed to gage
residents’ priorities and concerns relative to biking in
Evanston. The final report will include a summary of
the survey results. Implementation of any elements of
the plan will follow a public information and comment
process. The plan will be presented to the City
Council in July 2014.
