What Are The Advantage Of Burger King
Before the last decade Burger King was the greatest competitor to the McDonald's, but through the
last decade Burger King has reduced their market share significantly. According to Advertising Age,

more than double its lead from 10 years earlier". Burger King started to go down in early 2000s,
then company has passed into different owners and their imprudent advertising and marketing
strategies let them down again.

When people are in a center–like environment for example a mall then it is easier to pick whatever

would have an upper hand if it is one of the foods available.
Burger King is headquartered in Miami, because of its near proximity to Latin America. This
strategic position has allowed Burger King to ensure its presence in the Latin community. The South
Americans who make a pit–stop in Miami in order to enter the United States are familiarize
themselves with the Burger King products, and Burger King is also able to test the products on
indigenous Latin community, before expanding to the Latin countries without the fear of undergoing
rejection. This location in Miami has simplified their entry into the Latin countries and businesses
seeking franchises find it easier to work with them. Burger King has strengthened their global
competitive position in the Latin countries, but we find that these countries are not heavily
populated; they should also try to expand to denser populations like those of China, India, Nigeria

The audit also found that SMART had violated Indonesian law on forest management, and launched

environmental studies had been completed, reports AFP. The company also planted palm oil crops in

SMART said in a statement (PDF) on its website it wasdisappointed with Burger King's decision

In 1940, McDonald's was first opened in San Bernardino, California by two men, Dick and Mac
McDonald. At first, it was called McDonald's Bar–B–Que. In 1948, the restaurant was shut down for
three months for alterations. The menu was reduced to nine items: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, soft
drinks, coffee, potato chips, and a slice of pie. They then changed their name to McDonalds as they
changed their menu and stop serving Bar–b–Que.
In 1954, Burger King was first opened by Keith Kramer and his wife. It was first named Insta

But the ones Burger King's has are not as crispy and the ones McDonalds has. They say they are all
white meat but I beg to differ. If it is all white meat then it is the bone to. I must say that the new
chicken tenders at Burger king are much better than the old one I would still rather have the ones
from McDonalds then from Burger king. McDonalds has chicken select and Burger King has just
came out with chicken strips. Everything right down to the size count and the sauces to go with it.
One thing that Burger King is starting new is that they are trying to introduce all fresh items on its
menu. They are using new fresh cut lettuces, onions, salads, and trying to become a healthier
restaurant. Something new that McDonalds is trying is in their kid's meals they are giving a smaller
fry and also giving the kids apple slices. Burger King has yet to jump on this concept, but I'm sure it
is not too far behind. So as you can see right down to the mascot Burger King is trying to keep up
with everything that McDonalds does.
The fast food business is a multi–billion dollar industry. The two businesses running in the lead is

Fast food is currently one of the biggest businesses in the United States due to the hectic schedules
that the average person has to deal with. It is often necessary to grab food on the go because there
just isn't enough time to cook at home. This is the main reason behind the tremendous success of
fast food giants such as McDonalds and Burger King. McDonald 's Corporation is the world 's

Advertising In Burger King Advertising
Our body and mind acts without anyone's approval, but can it be influenced by the images we see
everyday? The images in ads, tv, video games and etc, can either impact us at first sight or build up
overtime to make us act a certain way. We often dismiss the idea that we are not influenced by
images, but rather we do things out of our own free will. Cameron Johnson stated, "In fact, most
people argue adamantly that they are not influenced by advertising images, that what they purchase
is the choice of their own coherent and impenetrable consciousness"(208). Even small images
around us can alter what we think and the decisions we make. Many ads today are controversial and
they usually try to attract one gender, while the other may find it offensive. Fast food conglomerates
are one of the many corporations that uses this strategy to get consumers to buy their products. A
popular fast food restaurant, Burger King, tend to make ads that have a deeper meaning than what is

trying to advertise one of their burgers with a simple ad, but the distinctive details and symbolism is

Lamb Burger Research Paper
Looking for an unusual treat, but a little nervous to jump straight into unknown culinary territory?
Then the lamb burger might just be what you are looking for. This delectable dish blends the
familiarity of a traditional hamburger with the uniqueness of a distinctively–flavored, exotically–
spiced meat. Like a traditional beef burger, the lamb burger is made up of meat that is well ground
and made into patties. Unlike its more common counterpart however, lamb bears a complex flavor
that ranges from bold to delicate, and is sometimes described as gamey, sweet and minerally. The
spices used for this dish are varied and lend to the already diverse flavors without overwhelming
them. The history of the burger is hotly debated, some saying that it first appeared in the merchant
yurts of ancient Mongolia, while others claim that it was first created in an early 1900s lunch wagon
in New Haven, Connecticut. Regardless of its exact origins, this delightful dish is a well loved item
on menus around the world. Given its world wide recognition, it is no surprise to find that the lamb
burger has a growing base of devoted fans. Over 10,000 years ago, the humble sheep was

rights to two pieces of equipment called "Insta–machines", opened their first restaurants. Their
production model was based on one of the machines they had acquired, an oven called the "Insta–
Broiler". This strategy proved to be so successful that they later required all of their franchises to use
the device. After the company faltered in 1959, it was purchased by its Miami, Florida, franchisees,
James McLamore and David R. Edgerton. They initiated a corporate restructuring of the chain, first
renaming the company Burger King. They ran the company as an independent entity for eight years
(eventually expanding to over 250 locations in the United States), before selling it to the Pillsbury
Company in 1967.
Pillsbury's management tried several times to restructure Burger King during the late 1970s and the
early 1980s. The most prominent change came in 1978 when Burger King hired McDonald's
executive Donald N. Smith to help revamp the company. In a plan called "Operation Phoenix",
Smith restructured corporate business practices at all levels of the company. Changes included
updated franchise agreements, a broader menu and new standardized restaurant designs. Smith left

In 1954 David Edgerton and James McLamore purchased a fledgling burger shop that could not
seem to make a name for itself, called Insta–Burger King. Immediately the two new owners
renamed the establishment Burger King. For the first few years Burger King struggled to compete
with their competitors, namely McDonalds, but slowly started to gain more and more popularity. If a
person were to fast forward to today, they would see that Burger King is not only competing in the

Burger King is trying to make talking about their products part of this new fast food activity that is
being sold. Essentially, they not only want the customer to buy the product, but to then turn around
and advertise it as well. They give several examples of pictures beneath this sentence where the food
is organized in a clever way, i.e. looking like the Instagram app picture, and also people
photographing their own food in an interesting place. Scrolling down they provide their customers
with a store locator and very brief history which seem to establish both ethos and logos. As you
scroll down to the bottom of the page, the customer is privy to many links where they can find out
everything such as investor information, career opportunities at Burger King, and even nutritional
information. This is where Burger King establishes the most ethos and logos, making all of this
useful information readily available in one neat place. This is also where they finally stray from their
primary audience of the youth, to the general population of people seeking out Burger King. All in
all, Burger King manages to create an adequate amount of Ethos and Logos, but seems to use pathos
in a more manipulative then useful way on their homepage. Since their homepage wanted the

1. Introduction:
Brief history:
– Burger King 's first restaurant, originally called Insta Burger King, was opened on December 4,
1954 in a suburb of Miami, Florida by James McLamore and David Edgerton; both alumni of the
Cornell University School of Hotel Administration.
– In 1967, after eight years of private operation, the Pillsbury Company acquired Burger King and
its parent company Burger King Corporation. At the time of the purchase, BK had grown to 274
restaurants in the United States.
– When Burger King Corporation began franchising in 1967, it relied on a regional franchising
model where franchisees would purchase the right to open stores within a defined geographic
region. These franchise agreements granted BKC very little oversight control over its franchisees
and resulted in issues of product quality control, store image and design and operations procedures.
Burger King Egypt:
The opening of the first Burger King® restaurant will took place during the second quarter of 2007
at Egypt 's City Stars Mall, Cairo, one of the largest shopping malls in the region. A further two

The first Burger King restaurant in Miami in the mid–1950s featured a walk–up window, a limited
menu (burgers and shakes for 19¢, sodas and fries for 10¢), and "your food ready by the time you 'd
paid for it." As one early manager recalled, "Our windows faced front so we could see customers
driving in. With the limited menu, we pretty much knew what they 'd order and we 'd have it ready."
In the 1960s and 1970s, Burger King developed an assembly–line production process that delivered

The company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Pillsbury Company, was organized on a geographic
basis with three divisions and, within them, a region, area, and district structure. On average, for
example, five company–operated restaurants reported to a district manager. The corporate
relationship with franchise restaurants had evolved from a policing function to one that included
significant consulting. Support services such as personnel, training, and accounting reported to the
regional level. Burger King restaurants varied widely in size and design, reflecting locations that
ranged from shopping malls to interstate highway intersections. Typically, each store had a unique
pattern of sales and a work force drawn from the local labor market.

Hillybourne (a disguised location) was a New England college town with a population of about

Burger King International
Burger King, previously known as InstaBurger King in 1954, is the world's largest flame–broiled
fast food restaurant chain (Daniels, Radebaugh & Sullivan, 2011). Burger Kings core competency
lays in the way it cooks its burgers– by its flame broiled method as opposed to grills that fry and
also the option that it offers its customers as to how they want their burgers ("have it your way"
theme), (Daniels, Radebaugh & Sullivan, 2011). According to the Burger King Investor website

Some of the disadvantages seen with global expansion by Burger King include political unrest e.g.
Colombia. Also, taxes and legal systems can also prove to be a barrier for Burger King as an entrant
into the international market.
Burger Kings' Domestic and International Revenues Burger King earns about two– thirds of its
revenue form operations in the U.S and Canada and one third from other areas. I believe that this
relationship should defiantly change. This is because if something catastrophic were to happen, the
company would experience very serious losses. According to Zacs Investment Research, harsh
weather conditions in the year 2010 affected sales in the U.S and Canada by 3.9%. This is a
substantial amount to money to the company and can cripple operations. Being that Burger King has
shown significant success internationally, I believe that they should continue to expand and stop
'putting all their eggs in one basket.' Burger King prefers to enter markets with more youth and
shopping centers. I believe this is so because generally, the youth tend to prefer fast food over
traditional food. Also the age factors i.e. 18–35yr olds generally tend to known as the 'busy
generation', making it more convenient to open locations where these people can grab food and go.
Lastly, shopping malls are an ideal setting for a fast food restaurant because shoppers would prefer

Swot Analysis For Burger King
3.0 FUTURE PLANNING ROSAFIFAH BINTI MANSOR (S38509)
For future planning, Burger King should refer to SWOT analysis to enter the new market.
1) Based on strength in SWOT analysis, Burger King has greatest new item. Compare to the
McDonald, they only upgrade their menu with the same product. In India we create new item such
as we offer vegetarian and non–vegetarian burger and chapatti wrap. This is because, during the
religious occasion in India which is a kind of festival, they usually do not consume non–vegetarian
product and even during a fast period. However in McDonald they don't change their menu or add
new item.
2) Burger King also have weaknesses which is they weak in marketing campaigns likes advertising.

McDonald they only make innovation with the same product such as last month they create spicy

2) Create cafe in Burger King
Next innovation that Burger King will create cafe in our restaurant. Some people will say that we
copy that idea from McDonald. But our café will be more interesting than McCafé at McDonald. We
will add more menus in our café such as more type of coffees, cake, and dessert. We also will create

Since the 1950's, Burger King has been offering its famous flame–broiled fast food burgers
throughout the United States and, eventually, the world. Burger King, also known by the initials
B.K., has evolved from a small Florida–based hamburger chain to one of the most well–known and

The first Burger King restaurant opened in Jacksonville, Florida under the name Insta–Burger King
in 1953. In 1954, the Burger King Corporation was founded by Miami–based James McLamore and

The company is able to grow while minimizing large capital expenditure, meanwhile it collects fees

Weaknesses:
Vulnerability to Labor and Regulatory Influences
Although the company operates in many international venues, the majority of restaurants are in the
United States. This concentration of operations in one geographic area increases company's
exposure to local factors such as labor strikes and the influence of regulatory changes.
Reliance on so–called "Super Customers"
There is some indication that Burger King may have been slow to transition to leaner and healthier
restaurant fare in favor of pleasing its long term customers who are fans of the big larger portion
sandwiches.
Opportunities:
New Breakfast Food Initiative
Burger King is seeking to overhaul its breakfast menu and will add Starbucks Corp.'s Seattle's Best
Coffee to all its U.S. restaurants. It has introduced earlier restaurant opening times in its United
Kingdom locations.
New Healthier Menu Items

McDonald's and Burger King have competed as the top two fast food chains in the nation since the
middle of the twentieth century. Both of these companies established a strategy built around
delivering food at a fast pace and in a consistent quality. The cases at hand revolve around one
McDonald's and one Burger King, both located in Hillybourne, so as to provide a level backdrop to

This speed comes at a price, however, as the burgers and fries may have to sit in the rack (inventory)
for a long period of time, and lead to a lower–quality final product if the inventory is too high. On
the flip side, if there is a rush, and not enough inventory, the process at McDonald's may not be
quick enough to adapt to the change in output needed. Finally, because the McDonald's inventory is
held at the end of the process, customization of products of orders is more difficult than at Burger
King, and can make individual orders take significantly longer than would be typical. That being
said, for people in a rush, there is no alternative to McDonald's. Even in the Hillybourne example,
the average time per customer from door to order received is over a minute difference in total time.
While this may not seem like much, the ability to get more burgers out the door can mean significant
differences in profit.
Burger King, on the other hand, utilizes a made to order system. In this process, the burger patties
and fries are created, but they aren't finalized until the customer actually makes their order. The
advantage to this process is that the modification of individual orders and burgers is much simpler,
since the burger isn't constructed until the customer places their order. For example when someone
orders a burger without onions at McDonald's, the customer has to wait for a full round of
hamburgers to be cooked from the beginning before

4. Employee Motivation The motivation of both stores for employees to perform well is hard to
ascertain from just observing, but it appears somewhat obvious. The people working in these
establishments appear to have a lower social economic status, and the fact that a paycheck is coming
at the end of the week may be the only motivation they have. The stores do have an employee of the
month plaque on the wall, but it is doubtful that this is motivation to strive day in and day out for.
There is also the fear of potentially losing their jobs if they perform sub standard.
5. Communication Both stores employed a very open communication policy. Employees were
talking, sometimes shouting at one another to be heard. The management was openly involved in the
employees routines and the employees felt no barriers to prevent their communication with the
manager. Sometimes in both stores, there would be a break down in communication somewhere
along the line and that would result in extended waiting times for customers and sometimes,
screwed up orders.

Objectification In Burger King Advertising
Objectification of women and use of sex to sell has deeply permeated many different places in the
media, even ads for burgers. A 2009 print ad shown in Singapore for the new Burger King "Super
Seven Incher" burger depicts a wide–eyed model with her mouth wide open near the huge sandwich,
not so subtly alluding to oral sex. The overly suggestive slogans and the fact that the model did not
even know her photo was being used in this way only makes the ad even worse. The model has
stated, "I didn't know about this being done to my image, let alone agree to pose for the scenario"
(Sanghani, para. 9). Burger King unapologetically displayed the ad at bus stops, street corners, and
all over the walls, doors, and even door mats of Burger Kings in Singapore. Burger King did not
hide it in a magazine, it was out in the open for anyone of all ages to see. They targeted a male
audience and ultimately wanted to bring more people to the restaurant, but a completely different
approach to the poster would have been far better. It is insulting to a large portion of their
consumers, and may alter the perception of younger consumers. Burger King uses an appeal to
pathos and ethos, diction, border, contrast, color scheme, and other rhetoric to sell their new
sandwich and promote their restaurant, yet the way they executed the ad is degenerative and
insulting.
An attempt to an appeal to pathos and ethos is made through diction, detail and presentation. Most

Mcdonald's vs Burger King
(Images provided by queenscrap.blogspot.com and bbs.hoopchina.com)
"Hey, let's get some McDonald's? We hear this all too often. Before you say "Yes" to this question,
you need to think about how the food compares in nutrition and will the nutrition of fast food have
effects in the future. Let's look at fast food restaurants. When you hear someone say, "Let's go to
McDonalds or Burger King," what comes to mind would you consider the Big Mac or a Whopper?
Think of how many calories that goes into each one. When you look at the Big Mac your calorie
count is, "540 with 29 grams of fat and 45 grams of carbohydrates." The Whopper shows, "670
calories, 39 grams of fat and 51 grams of carbohydrates."(www.associatedcontent.com) So which ...

One even asked for an extra slice of cheese. Burger King satisfied more customers in the area of
taste. Which has better quality of food? This falls very hard when thinking about both restaurants.
McDonald's and Burger King have in fact, had good quality but one out shines the other. As it was
stated before McDonald's Big Mac was served sloppy that was not quality service. In terms of
Burger King, the customers were very satisfied with the quality of food and service that they
received. Looking at the companies goals is a major difference. Let 's take the Mc Donald 's
organization, one hundred percent customer satisfaction. When looking at this goal, it 's not always
reachable. When this goal is not met, they will do what ever it takes to fix the problem. The next
goal that puts them at a higher standard than other competitors, it 's founded on giving back to the
community with the Ronald Mc Donald House and Ronald McDonald Children 's Charities. In each
restaurant and drive thru there 's a donation box so money can be placed into helping the charities.
So many times there have been full boxes of money given. Over the years McDonald 's has given
millions of dollars back to communities in an effort to help children in need of care. Burger King
was founded in 1953, the worlds #2 hamburger chain since McDonald 's. All of the burgers cooked
at Burger King are prepared by grilling

Burger King Case Study
In the Fast Food Industry research task, I did an extensive comparative study on McDonalds and
Burger King. Paying special attention to Marketing and Social Responsibility areas, I then came to a
conclusion of which Fast Food franchise is more successful and made recommendations for the
"unsuccessful" company on how they can improve on their current business model.
Burger King was found in 1953 and named InstaBurger King. Its Head office is based in America,
Florida and is a chain of hamburger fast food restaurant. InstaBurger King had financial difficulties
in 1954, David Edgerton and James McLamore bought the company and renamed it "Burger King".
When "Burger King" originally opened in 1953, the menu consisted of basic hamburgers, French
fries, soft drinks, milkshakes, and desserts. When it was bought and renamed in 1954, Burger King's
new owners introduced the Whopper sandwich in 1957 to expand the menu. It was a way of
differentiating Burger King from other burger fast food restaurants at the time. Since the change the
Whopper has become the focus of its advertising. The company then started to name its new kiosk–
style restaurants Whopper Bars. Burger King seeks to satisfy their customers and to maximize their
profits. Burger King turns over 11,000 branches today and started off with only 1 store in Miami,
Florida.
McDonalds opened in 1955. They view themselves as a franchisor and believe that franchising is
important to delivering customer experiences and gaining

The images in ads, tv, video games and etc, can either impact us at first sight or build up overtime to make us act a certain way. We often dismiss the idea that we are not influenced by images, but rather we do things out of our own free will. Cameron Johnson stated, "In fact, most people argue adamantly that they are not influenced by advertising images, that what they purchase is the choice of their own coherent and impenetrable consciousness"(208). Even small images around us can alter what we think and the decisions we make. Many ads today are controversial and they usually try to attract one gender, while the other may find it offensive. After visiting the McDonald brothers' original store location in San Bernardino, California, the founders and owners (Keith J. Burger King, also known by the initials B.K., has evolved from a small Florida–based hamburger chain to one of the most well–known and recognizable fast food franchises on earth. The first Burger King restaurant opened in Jacksonville, Florida under the name Insta–Burger King in 1953. This concentration of operations in one geographic area increases company's exposure to local factors such as labor strikes and the influence of regulatory changes. Reliance on so–called "Super Customers" There is some indication that Burger King may have been slow to transition to leaner and healthier restaurant fare in favor of pleasing its long term customers who are fans of the big larger portion sandwiches. The cases at hand revolve around one McDonald's and one Burger King, both located in Hillybourne, so as to provide a level backdrop to compare the two restaurants in more depth. This speed comes at a price, however, as the burgers and fries may have to sit in the rack (inventory) for a long period of time, and lead to a lower–quality final product if the inventory is too high. On the flip side, if there is a rush, and not enough inventory, the process at McDonald's may not be quick enough to adapt to the change in output needed. Finally, because the McDonald's inventory is held at the end of the process, customization of products of orders is more difficult than at Burger King, and can make individual orders take significantly longer than would be typical. That being said, for people in a rush, there is no alternative to McDonald's. Even in the Hillybourne example, the average time per customer from door to order received is over a minute difference in total time. While this may not seem like much, the ability to get more burgers out the door can mean significant differences in profit. Burger King, on the other hand, utilizes a made to order system. In this process, the burger patties and fries are created, but they aren't finalized until the customer actually makes their order. The advantage to this process is that the modification of individual orders and burgers is much simpler, since the burger isn't constructed until the customer places their order. For example when someone orders a burger without onions at McDonald's, the customer has to wait for a full round of hamburgers to be cooked from the beginning before ... Employee Motivation The motivation of both stores for employees to perform well is hard to ascertain from just observing, but it appears somewhat obvious. The people working in these establishments appear to have a lower social economic status, and the fact that a paycheck is coming at the end of the week may be the only motivation they have. The stores do have an employee of the month plaque on the wall, but it is doubtful that this is motivation to strive day in and day out for. There is also the fear of potentially losing their jobs if they perform sub standard. 5. Communication Both stores employed a very open communication policy. Employees were talking, sometimes shouting at one another to be heard. The management was openly involved in the employees routines and the employees felt no barriers to prevent their communication with the manager. Sometimes in both stores, there would be a break down in communication somewhere along the line and that would result in extended waiting times for customers and sometimes, screwed up orders. 6. A 2009 print ad shown in Singapore for the new Burger King "Super Seven Incher" burger depicts a wide–eyed model with her mouth wide open near the huge sandwich, not so subtly alluding to oral sex. The overly suggestive slogans and the fact that the model did not even know her photo was being used in this way only makes the ad even worse. The model has stated, "I didn't know about this being done to my image, let alone agree to pose for the scenario" (Sanghani, para. 9). Burger King unapologetically displayed the ad at bus stops, street corners, and all over the walls, doors, and even door mats of Burger Kings in Singapore. Burger King did not hide it in a magazine, it was out in the open for anyone of all ages to see. They targeted a male audience and ultimately wanted to bring more people to the restaurant, but a completely different approach to the poster would have been far better. It is insulting to a large portion of their consumers, and may alter the perception of younger consumers. Burger King uses an appeal to pathos and ethos, diction, border, contrast, color scheme, and other rhetoric to sell their new sandwich and promote their restaurant, yet the way they executed the ad is degenerative and insulting.
