The Importance Of Literacy Education
The Four Resources Model supports teachers in designing an effective primary, literacy–learning
classroom environment. More importantly, it permits students to become communicators in
correlated, or interdependent elements of language use (Cambridge Assessment, 2013). This
significant approach to literacy describes the accessible resources children require to be literate,
which include code breaking, text participating, text using and text analysing (Luke & Freebody,
1999). The Australian Curriculum is a fundamental foundation. It ensures beginning, emergent, or
competent students are learning various language features, comprehend diverse text types and can
analytically evaluate the purpose of writing and reading. Critical stages and skills include sound
recognition, or oral language acquisition and functional grammar (Cambridge Assessment, 2013).
Hence, emphasising an initial focus on engaging students and the significance of teacher modeling
to build knowledge of the field is identified (Leslie S. Rush, 2004).
Literacy education is briefly outlined, through the strengths of the Four Resources Model. The key
aspect discussed is that it attempts to recognise and incorporate many of the current and well
developed techniques for training all students in becoming literate critical thinkers (Luke &
Freebody, 1999). More importantly, the model is perceived as a map of possible practices.
Specifically, the reading and writing levels of students assist teachers to design

Essay Early Literacy in Education
Introduction
"Literacy learning has a profound and lasting effect on the social and academic lives of children.
Their future educational opportunities and career choices are directly related to literacy ability. Since
early childhood is the period when language develops most rapidly, it is imperative that young
children are provided with a variety of developmentally appropriate literacy experiences throughout
each day, and that the classroom environment is rich with language, both spoken and printed. Early
childhood teachers are responsible for both understanding the developmental continuum of language
and literacy and for supporting each child's literacy development.
Literacy learning begins at birth and develops rapidly during the ... Show more content on

Children can take more than one of these steps at the same time. This list of steps, though, gives you
a general idea of how your child will progress toward reading." (Helping your child become a
reader) While these ideas may seem structured, it is also important to allow children to be creative
and use their imagination. Although reading is imperative, too many arrangements and rules can turn
a child off and lead to feelings of resentment, anger, and resistance. Reading should be set to the
tone and pace of the child.
Emergent Readers
As the standards of education change a consistent factor remains the focus on reading. Early
childhood educators must provide an atmosphere that is both developmentally stimulating to the
student while also meeting the standards of education. The methods used to help recognize phonics
and begin the transition into emergent readers vary from student to student. Without the foundation
of phonics research shows that a child will not learn to read. All children must know the alphabet in
order to communicate effectively. Phonics cannot be drilled into the child. This will only produce
memorization. Instead, educators must understand a child's individual needs as well as balance.
There is no true need to teach phonics as a separate subject. Most children will develop a sense of
curiosity from their own knowledge, ideas, and interest. There will of course be a select few that
may benefit from a more formal instruction. When children

The Importance Of Literacy In Education
Literacy is a vital skill necessary to thrive or even function in today's society. Researchers estimated
that 25% of American students had mild to severe reading problems (Margolis, 2004). Reading
problems can emotionally devastate children and compromise their future. A lot of professional
literature focuses on preventing, identifying, and remediating reading problems.
During my case study, I noticed that the majority of struggling students have a psychological
dilemma that is motivating the problem. The majority of the individuals that struggle to learn how to
read have a condition in the wiring of their brain that makes the skill difficult for them to pick up.
Poverty level and economic hardship that make learning feel unimportant or stressful may also
cause the problem (Portugal & Fundazioa, 2010).
It is very important for teachers to understand what is going on in the lives of children. With this
understanding, reading instruction and every type of learning would be more effective. The child
can receive help for the psychological difficulties and can be taught in a way that will help him
respond to and retain lesson material.
Struggling readers need personalized, focused, and assessment–driven instruction. In other words,
they need interventions that work. The most important aspects of literacy are oral language,
phonemic awareness, word recognition, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing. Books
can open the door to child's imagination, or they can represent

The Importance Of Literacy Instruction In Education
Introduction
Literacy instruction is a large focus to the curriculum we as educators follow at Remsen Elementary.
Remsen strives for excellence in literacy education and provides a variety of instruction literacy
plans in order to support student learning. As stated by our district, "Explode the Code", Wilson's
Fundations (grade K–3), Leveled Literacy Intervention Curriculum, and Literacy Centers are used
with fidelity. Along with these primary instructional resources, interventions and supplemental
learning opportunities help teachers to monitor student progress closely through a carefully
conceived, supported, and sustained Response to Intervention program (elementary level), and the
use of purposeful and comprehensive assessment and progress monitoring program (grade PK–12)
to measure student growth and achievement. Furthermore, our "Guide to Response to Intervention
(RTI) and Instruction" details our full curricula and materials at REMSEN, PK–12" (REFERENCE
WEBSITE).
Through my experience teaching the Fundations Wilson Language phonics program and my
conversations with our literacy teacher and fellow kindergarten teacher, Remsen has invested much
time into implementing this program school wide with the belief that a separate phonics time aside
from English language arts instruction is of great benefit to students. Through my classroom
observations and discussions with our K–3 literacy teacher as well as other K–3 teachers,
Fundations Wilson Language Program is designed

Visual Literacy And Social Justice Education
Critical Media/ visual Literacy and Social Justice Education
Students contact mass media in every day. At the same time, mass media plays an important role in
shaping students' attitude toward various social issues. Kellner and Share (2007, P.60) defined the
concept of critical media literacy:
Critical media literacy is an educational response that expands the notion of literacy to include
different forms of mass communication, popular culture, and new technologies. It deepens the
potential of literacy education to critically analyze relationships between media and audiences,
information, and power. Along with this mainstream analysis, alternative media production
empowers students to create their own messages that can challenge media texts

Leading for Literacy
Promoting Quality Education In summary of chapter 5 Promoting Quality Education written by
Joseph Murphy, I have discerned that Mr. Murphy has reviewed extensively the research conducted
during the last 20 years on reading. In this chapter he discusses ways to improve reading skill and
literacy based on this review of research. During his analysis he has supplied valuable information
on how to evaluate literacy, how to teach literacy and the importance of having strong literacy
teachers in the primary grades. (Murphy, 2004) Mr. Murphy it seems believes that the effectiveness
of the teacher is of the most significance to student progress. Therefore, in order to raise the quality
of reading skill and literacy we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The rate a child makes progress is dependent on the quality of instruction and content delivery.
Which again strengthens the research that states the teacher is the most important element in the
classroom and has more of an effect on early literacy than approach or reading programs. (Murphy,
2004) Mr. Murphy explains that we must train our teacher to present high quality literacy instruction
by reviewing and explaining two varying topics; 1) managing the learning environment and 2)
delivery of academic content. Numerous elements are involved in quality instruction and the
inclusion of these help to make significant gains. One of these is routine, which is thought to be
essential, but a teacher must also be flexile enough to make changes that will adapt to particular
situations that can occur within a classroom setting rapidly. (Murphy, 2004)
Managing the Learning Environment The environment of the classrooms can either promote or
negate success of the learning process. Mr. Murphy has identifies six factors that research is proving
to help increase reading achievement in the pre–k –3rd grades. These factors are: 1) teacher
centrality – means that a teacher supervises directly the students in order to guide and organize the
reading instruction, 2) task orientation – is explained as a businesslike teacher/student relationship,
where the academic task completion is the primary goal, 3) challenging and

The Importance Of Digital Literacy In Education
2. According to Kervin (2016), play promotes "language and literacy skills. Language is the
currency of social interactions and school achievement" (p. 64). The social relationship drives
children to develop creative practices and helps them to identify real purpose through problem
solving skills. Through adult support and imaginative play, children develop language skills from a
language–rich environment that reinforces opportunities through meaningful social interactions. 3.
According to McKee–Waddell (2015), the definition of digital literacy is "the ability to use
information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate
information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills" (p. 26). To create a more all–inclusive
classroom, educators are using digital technology instruction to enable, engage, and facilitate a
meaningful learning experience. As digital literacy evolves, so should the delivery of instruction.
Today, educators can teach writing, which is critical in preparing students for their college or career
path. Consequently, the evolving technologies coupled with the teaching methodologies provide a
positive classroom atmosphere that increases student achievement by offering opportunities for
critical thinking writing skills, which set the groundwork for lifetime learning. 4. Gunayden &
Karamete (2016) believe, it is necessary for teachers to utilize new technology that is appropriate for
younger generations. "It is an educator's

idea of it is highly subjective to differing aguements and its percieved importance varies from
person to person. Litteracy is enforced by those who you use it and altho its not all languages have
used it, it is agrgued that humanity cannot progress without it. Today literacy is commonly
associated with social reality and forms thereof. There are a few arguements for litteracy that attmpt

The Importance Of Literacy In Education
Literacy
As a child, I never had books read to me. It was not really part of the middle–class lifestyle in
Punjab, where I was born and lived for 5 years. In Punjab, I completed two years of early education
known as LKG (lower kindergarten) and UKG (upper kindergarten). The school I went to, although
a high SES school, did not have a library where we would go to read picture books. Moreover, the
books we did have for 'English' were a compilation of poems and stories, with very few pictures.
Poems or story was read by the teacher, and then told the 'moral' of the story. Nothing more. Neither
was there any extrapolation nor exploration of character or plots. Although, it was taught in school it
was still a second language for me.
Nieto (1992) asserts that the language students bring along impacts their learning, and teachers often
want to take away the student's language and culture. I was often told to speak English at home, and
at home I was told to speak Punjabi. Teachers who want to create equity in class may in fact, by
ignoring differences, by accepting the dominant culture as a norm (Nieto, 1992). Many teachers
expect that students know how to 'talk books', because it is 'nature', however it heavily underpinned
by nature (Heath, 1982). Understanding the culture and the type of home literacies students practice
in is imperative in providing the appropriate support for the student. When I first came to Australia,
my teachers thought I had superficial English skills

Digital Literacy And The Public Education
Discussion Post #4
How important is 'digital literacy' considered to be in our current public education? How important
do you think digital literacy is?
The American Library Association defines digital literacy as the ability to use information and
communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both
cognitive and technical skills. This definition is important to the discussion of the digital divide,
defined by Morse (2004) as "inequitable use of computer technology" (p. 268). We learned from our
readings that the divide between lower SES students and their wealthier counterparts in terms of
first, access to technology (hardware, software, broadband Internet) and second, what Banister and
Fischer (2010) called the "opportunity for use" (p. 3). With increased government funding over the
past two decades, schools have seen access to technology improve. Warschauer and Matuchniak
(2011) explained the significance of the federal government 's e–Rate program, which has provided
a whopping $2 billion per year for broadband and Internet access for schools (p. 188). Yet the softer
costs, such as technical support staff, and which are not funded by the federal government mean that
even when the infrastructure and actual hardware and software are present, teachers and students
may be unable to access them. The interesting divide is also largely based on SocioEconomic Status:
the opportunity for use of technology. The expectations for

The Negative Effects Of Teaching Literacy In Education
Throughout Michigan, the way high schools teach literacy does not prepare you for after high
school. They do not prepare you enough for the next grade. According to U.S. Department of Health
and Human Service, about half of the jobless people from age sixteen to twenty–one are not able to
get a decent job from not be functional literate (Reading). I think one of the big problems is many of
the teachers just give you the basic for the assignments and tell you to go at it. They do not connect
what they are teaching to beyond the classroom. There are so many ways to teach classes, but each
class should not be taught the same way. Having a teacher that teaches multiple subjects can affect
the student's literacy. It can have a very negative effect on the students. The teachers could have a
degree in that subject, but that doesn't mean they are excellent teachers. Many schools are lowering
their standards for teachers, which does not help the future of the students. "It is little wonder that in
comparison with the rest of the developed world, our standards are slipping. It takes more than a
good degree to make a good teacher." (Lovely), The teacher is not very enthusiastic about the
subject, which affects how they teach. How these teachers teach make a impacted on how these
students understand literacy. Students will start not caring about it, because whenever they need help
or ask questions, the teacher will focus on other kids. To fix the problem, teachers need to teach

My Autobiography Of Education : My Literacy Of Music
I have been working on both of my literacies for most of my life, but I only knew of one. When I
was about three years old, a lady named Miss Donna started coming to my house once a week and
sat at the kitchen table with me playing games. I didn't know it at the time, but she was a
representative of the local Head Start school for pre–kindergarten children. I couldn't start there until
I was four, so she came to my house and taught me things. This was the very beginning of my
literacy of education.
My other literacy just isn't that easy; it is music. Everyone listens to music literally from the day
they are born. It is in elevators, commercials, our cars, and even our public bathrooms. I have no
idea at what age I began to love music so much, but one of my first memories of trying to create it
came in the fifth grade. I was sitting in my bedroom with my dad's laptop and headphones. I was
listening to Aerosmith's "Dream On" on a loop on YouTube. I was trying to memorize the lyrics and
hit that god forsaken screaming note at the very end. Just when I thought I had the song mastered, I
look up and my parents and little sister are peeking around the corner giggling like school girls at
my blood curling attempt to emulate the great Steven Tyler.
Our literacies have to start somewhere, and for the most part, with someone. Never would I have
imagined at the moment when I seen my family laughing hysterically at my true attempt of singing,
that I would one day be standing in front

As the agreement that literacy is the center of all learning grows, the expectations for teachers to

new literacy policies. When you are in middle school you don't realize how important literacy is as
you grow older. This mentality continues to stay with you, especially when your teachers don't stress
this to you. The problem that occurs most often to me is when you have an English teacher and a
science teacher that don't work together to show students that literacy is important. In the
Remodeling Literacy Learning survey, they state that schools aren't structured to facilitate educators
working together. This would make sense to me because my literacy history reflects this. My
teachers were so involved in the work that they had to teach, they wouldn't take the time to ask what
the other teachers were doing. I believe they should be all working together and having a plan for
the students, so they build a better education system. One that is stronger, as a whole. According to
the 2013 report Remodeling Literacy Learning: Making Room for What Works, the structure for
remodeling literacy are in place but, the time devoted to them is quite limited. To me, time is going
to be always limited. I found in high school that teachers always complained that there was not

We need to speak to parents and ask them what is their need now. Whether it be to find shelter, food,

The Importance Of Literacy In Education
In contemporary society, advancement in technology has made it imperative that individuals have
proficient literacy and numeracy skills in order to participate in society and contribute economically
(Cazden & Beck, 2008; Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008). Furthermore, low literacy rates correlate to
unhealthy lifestyle and limited participation in civic life (DeWalt et al., 2004; Shanahan &
Shanahan, 2008). Thus, it has become even more important that schools prepare students with
adequate literacy and numeracy skills to enable them to succeed in life and progress in their studies.
However, these demands are not necessarily being met by schools. According to Australian bureau
of statistics (ABS) (2014) there has been a decline in the literacy rates for adults, with 44% of adults
lacking the literacy competency required for modern life. Furthermore, evidence suggests that
school curriculum and practices do not accommodate for linguistic diversity. PISA has gathered
results from 15 years old students in the areas of science literacy, mathematical literacy and reading
literacy, which are summarised in table 1 below (Thomas, Bortoli & Underwood, 2017).
Australia is a multicultural country, with a great deal of linguistic diversity. Many students in

students who are born overseas or in Australia whose first language is not English and Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander students whose

provides independence in a dependent society. Censorship is a very popular debate in society today;
supporters of censorship take the stance of it balancing out sensitive topics, which vary. In the article

This political cartoon shows that the important skill of literacy can get you further in to life, with
educational and economic opportunities. Literacy is important due to the basic fact of reading and
understanding the knowledge that is appearing before you. With this skill, it empowers one to ask
more questions and to find those answers, and further into education on any subject, without literacy
we wouldn't find no cure or invent new products. But, the thirst for knowledge is never ending
because there will always be one of the five W's (who, what, when, where, and why). With the skills
that we are prepared with in school is provided to help with our furthering adventure into education
and opportunities in life, without it we would all be sitting here with the IQ of a newborn. The never

learning and taking the chance to learn something new to further them into their life. Not only does
the increased knowledge help, but usually those with more education get the higher paying jobs,
which helps out in many ways. The power of literacy is an opportunity that should be taken

For any teacher to be able to pass on sound knowledge of education to their scholars irrespective of
the race or language of instruction they must have a pattern of teaching and monitor the progress of
the students.
The teachers must have a one on one or intimate teaching relationship with their scholars for them to
have sound understanding on how to carry out their teaching pattern.
Once the teacher is familiar with the scholars, depending on their level of knowledge, the
introduction of phonetics and vowels and how to make up words through, speaking, reading and
listening will be the basic teaching pattern (Richards & Rodgers 2001, p.21). The language of
instruction must be put into consideration since most of the scholars are classified as international
students. They have to be instructed in a clear and loud voice and every word or assignment being
taught has to be repeated before and after writing it down on the blackboard (Richards & Rodgers,
2001, p.11).
On achieving this, great emphasis will be laid on the introduction of the different parts of speech or
structuring of grammar and rhetoric (e.g. phrases, clauses and sentences) which will help the
students build up on how to make sentences and where to

21st Century Literacy In Education
Part A The digital world we live in is constantly changing and updating to include the most efficient
technology for everyday use. Children in today's society have grown up using the latest
smartphones, tablets, computers and televisions. It is no surprise that technology has made it's way
into schools and incorporated into classroom instruction. Robinson, McKenna and Conradi state that
"technology in schools is here to stay...students must now be able to navigate hypermedia and to
compose using not only word processing software but desktop publishing systems capable of
integrating multimedia. The times, they are a–changin" (Robinson, McKenna & Conradi, 2012, p.
223). Robinson, McKenna and Conradi discuss in their research about a common myth of 21st–
Century literacy; that "21st–century literacy is about technology only" (Robinson, McKenna &
Conradi, 2012, p. 227). As an educator, I agree with Robinson, McKenna and Conradi that 21st–
Century literacy is not only about technology. Technology is a wonderful supplement to learning
literacy, however it does not take the place of learning to read, write and orally communicate on a
daily basis. "Studies of workforce readiness show that employers rate written and oral
communication skills very highly, and collaboration, work ethic, critical thinking, and leadership all
rank higher than proficiency in information technology" (Robinson, McKenna & Conradi, 2012, p.

Philosophy of Literacy Education
Personal Philosophy of Literacy Education Throughout my first year as a middle school Language
Arts teacher, I have developed a theoretical understanding of what I believe are the necessary
components to providing a meaningful and generative environment in which students develop and
expand literacy skills. The teaching of literacy needs to include a balance of reading, writing,
speaking and listening activities, and needs to be a social endeavor that provides a variety of
instructional strategies to meet the needs of all diverse learners. My teaching strategies, beliefs and
personality that I bring to my classroom can be characterized as a blend of two types of
philosophical theories: social constructivism and relational teaching and ... Show more content on

Literacy cannot be learned through multiple lessons taught solely in isolation. Instead, it must be
learned in a comprehensive manner, in which various literacy skills are fully–integrated. Vygotsky
(1987) is the theorist who appears to have had the greatest influence on literacy researchers working
from a social constructivist perspective. Vygotsky's approach to learning was holistic in nature, and
he advocated the study of higher mental functions with all their complexity (Moll, 1990). Research
on school literacy learning conducted from a social constructivist perspective suggests that students
need to engage in authentic and relevant literacy activities, as opposed to rote memorization or
repetitive worksheets contrived for practice (Au, 1998). The fourth element of my philosophy of
literacy education is the importance of teaching literacy through bringing relevance, to establish a
deep link between the students and the content. My student population is comprised of an array of
diverse backgrounds, all coming together in my classroom. Literacy achievement of students of
diverse backgrounds can be strengthened by moving from a mainstream orientation to a more
diverse orientation, giving greater consideration to issues of ethnicity, primary language, and social
class (Au, 1998). Themes in constructivist work encourage creating relevant learning experiences
for students as a central part of literacy acquisition, including

The Importance Of Literacy In Education
In order for students to be well–rounded, intelligent, and literate individuals, literacy needs to be
seen in all content areas. However, there is a debate on whether or not literacy should be emphasized
in mathematics classrooms and to what extend. In the article Reading in the Disciplines, the author
states that some books are written with reading math tips because authors of these books recognize
that reading these math textbooks require strategic knowledge and the tips help struggling students
with definitions and applications to real world (Lee 13). I loved these types of textbooks as I grew
up because I struggled with reading and these texts were easier to read and understand. Then I
entered college and I noticed how unbeneficial that was to me and the disservice it actually did to
my future college courses. According to the article from Lee and Spratley, "texts such as Glencoe
also provide students with fewer opportunities to engage the decontextualized nature of the
mathematics that students are more likely to meet in college mathematics classes..." (Lee 13).
Therefore, we need to prepare our students for the writing, reading, and thinking required by
advanced disciplinary coursework. According to the article Teaching Disciplinary Literacy to
Adolescents, literacy has a correlation with income as it states, "the expansion of information–based
technology, the internationalization of labor markets, and the changing of workplace demands have

always existed because reading is a critical skill needed in every aspect of a person's life. Society
often makes comments about the things learned in school that do not apply to real world from math
to social studies to foreign languages but reading is needed in every aspect of life. A person cannot
function in society if they are unable to read.

In the article, Balanced Literacy Instruction: A Truce for the Reading War? It states that "balanced
literacy is a framework for reading instruction. It involves teaching by reading to students, having
students read independently, and reading with students" (Balanced Literacy Instruction: A Truce for
the Reading War? – Reading Worksheets, Spelling, Grammar, Comprehension, Lesson Plans, n.d.)
The reading wars will always exist because true balance is hard to generalize and apply to all
students. A successful teacher knows that not every student learns the same way but that the
program created has to be built to allow modifications and accommodations for each student.
Balancing Literacy is the only solution to allow for all learning styles to function and be successful
in reading, writing, and literacy. While there is no data to support how the perfect balance would
look, it is documented that "around the world, when either a phonics or whole language approach is
adopted, an unacceptable large percentage of children fail to learn to read" (BalancedReading.com

Questions On Financial Literacy Education
Rationale:
Financial Literacy Education, FLE traditionally assumes that the more knowledge a Financial
Literacy Learner, FLL has the better the financial decisions outcome. In addition, government
mandates address more objective financial approaches to FLE rather than those approaches related
to attitudes and behavior of FLL. The use of personal experience and the telling of relevant personal
stories are an impactful tool to use in the classroom. The idea of posing this research question is to
find out if the promotion of personal experience via the use of impactful tools such as the telling of
personal stories be encouraged for use in the classroom. This particular question sets to find out the
relationship of FLE Educators personal beliefs and how they affect FLL overall personal financial
satisfaction.
An Integrative Essay and the Posing of One Research Question:
According to Tisdell, Taylor and Sprow Forte a complex interaction exist between educator's beliefs
and their pedagogical approach to the teaching practice in the classroom. Similarly, learners are
affected by emotions and money when making financial decisions.
Financial Literacy Education, FLE, learner's face a current risk for economic uncertainty and

The Literacy Education Is Not A New Issue
There is a prevalence of underprepared students entering postsecondary education. The College
Board (2013) reports as many as 57% of students completing the SAT exams did not meet the
benchmark for college level coursework; this figure may present low, as it does not necessarily
include the countless students who do not attempt the test, as they are planning on attending
postsecondary schools not requiring these scores for admissions or not planning on continuing their
education after high school. Individuals might point fingers at secondary education and blame them
for not preparing the college freshman adequately, but unfortunately, there are a myriad of
influences that generate this educational skills gap.

The opportunity exists to place the liability of underprepared students on secondary education;
concentrating on a flurry of mitigating factors existing within secondary education. Learners may
arrive underprepared because they had not planned to attend a postsecondary school; possibly, a
high school college track was not studied. Students may have originated from underprivileged
school districts and communities, and may not have had the advantages of solid school budgets,
staff, or technology. First–generation students may also prove to be underprepared, as they exhibit
uncertainty as to what is required for college preparation. Inappropriate high school promotion or an
academic skill gap demonstrates another pool of students presenting as underprepared.
Subsequently, students may have suffered a delay between initial knowledge acquirement and
postsecondary enrollment; recognized when a required high school course may have concluded in
the junior year with over a year break in preparation. Realistically, there are numerous causes we
can attribute to students arriving on campus underprepared. The true motivation to designating fault

students to be ready to learn and develop at a college–level.

institution through the attainment of literacy. The attempt to educate African–American during the
time of slavery gained support from various religious groups; however, Caucasian viewed literacy
for African–American as a method for instilling subservience and maintaining social, political and
economic control. In contrast, African–American viewed literacy as a component of emancipation
and participation in societal institutions on an equal basis. Many African–American activists have
thought for blacks by creating different institution such as churches and schools for young blacks to
get an education. This period might thought as one in which the seeds of literacy were introduced
but without hardship and opposition. Higher education was viewed as a privilege for blacks and it
was subjected to a debate. As for instance, the convention of free African –American was created to
establish a college at New Allen that would offer a classical curriculum for blacks. According to the
author, the proposal to establish that kind of college met with considerable opposition who did not
believe African–American capable of higher education. As a result of this, the opposition succeeded
in preventing the establishment of the college, although they did not object the establishment of

The Importance Of Literacy In Education
It is important for families to develop awareness and consciousness of literacy skills, strategies, and
behaviors, so they support their child along his or her literacy journey. Currently, the first, second,
and third grade teachers are using guided reading and writer's workshop during their literacy
instruction to provide an individualized approach to learning. After examination of the PARCC and
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) data for the past three years, literacy is an area of
concern for Truman School. The DRA is administered twice a year, in the fall and spring. The
number of students reading on grade level significantly drops by third grade. For example, following
the same cohort of students, 78% percent of first grade students were reading on grade level during
the 2014–2015 school year. By third grade only 39% of students were reading on grade level for the
2016–2017 school year. By developing a strong partnership between our school and families, we can
foster lifelong readers and writers. Teachers communicate a few times during the years with families
regarding reading and students' progress. Most communication occurs during conferences, but
emails, notes, and phone conversations occur as well. Students are engaging in extra home literacy
activities such as flashcards, fluency folders, reading logs, or vocabulary notebooks. Families have

A balanced literacy program is a necessity for a child's education. The program should include
multiple instructional activities being consistently implemented in the classroom. The National
Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) determined, "37% of fourth graders
read below "basic" level and much higher in minority groups." (INSERT CITATION) More than
60% of African–American and Latino children are below grade level. A variety of instructional
activities are needed to teach children to read effectively. Each of the activities play a necessary role,
but can not stand alone when teaching children to read. These activities include: phonemic

Effective teachers use balanced literacy instruction in their classroom, teachers see the results in

Knoblauch Literacy And The Politics Of Education Summary
In the article "Literacy and the Politics of Education," C.H. Knoblauch talks about the concept of
literacy. Knoblauch mentions that people who have power and are literate think they can set the
literate standards for everyone, but that literacy is much more than just reading and writing. Robert
Yagelski, the author of "Abby's Lament: Does literacy matter?" also talks about the importance of
literacy and why knowing how to use it properly makes a difference in our society. In Knoblauch's
article, he points out that there are four main types of literacy in societies: functional literacy,
cultural literacy, personal–growth literacy, and critical literacy. Functional literacy is the literacy that

Education And Literacy In The Mid-Twentieth Century
Education and literacy are very important and play many roles in everyday lives. Over many years,
education and literacy have been viewed as something to be proud of and something to strive
towards, this can be seen back in the mid–20th century, while in more recent times, the views have
changed to almost the polar opposite of the original views. Today, they aren't as cherished or valued
as they were back in the day. In the time of Malcolm X, the mid–20th century, education and literacy
were valued much more because of the perceived difficulty of gaining them. The ease of access now
a days, due to technology, to education, such as books, makes the value of education and literacy go
down much more than how it was valued back in the times ... Show more content on

Both of the main characters in the stories want to further their knowledge in literacy, simply because
they "crave" knowledge and want to become intelligent just to become intelligent. They didn't want
knowledge to get a degree or a job, they wanted knowledge just to better themselves, unlike current
views in America. Despite the difficulties that they faced in order to get better educated and
overcome their illiteracy, they still tried because they knew knowledge is very valuable.
These things can be seen in the Library Card, where Richard Wright stumbles upon an author,
Mencken, and his novels while reading an article. His want to read can be seen when he says "I want
to read. I can't get books from the library. I wonder if you'd let me use your card" (347) He asks to
borrow his card, even knowing how dangerous it is, just so he could get a chance to read. In
Malcolm X, Malcolm also wants to read to satisfy his thirst for knowledge. He reads the dictionary,
writes down every word, and is excited to do more. On the other hand, with the technology today,
people don't have to struggle like them nearly as much. We haven't been deprived of education, like
they were, so we don't cherish it as nearly as much as they did. In the article Negative

years, the government of these countries focused on education. The levels of literacy in these

literacy rate of girls in Pakistan and family were the negative impact. Literacy rates for both gender

The Role of Adult Basic and Literacy Education Essay
The Role of Adult Basic and Literacy Education
With the passage of the 1988 Family Support Act (FSA), adult basic and literacy education was
linked to welfare reform. Based on experimentation with welfare reform during the previous decade,
the FSA created the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training Program (JOBS). JOBS, which
requires states to make educational services available to welfare recipients, was created in response
to the general consensus that welfare recipients are not well prepared to enter the work force (Cohen
et al. 1994). One of its major underlying assumptions is "that a strong foundation of literacy and
basic skills is critical to the successful transition to employment and self–sufficiency for AFDC ...

Some of this research is based on experiments with welfare–to–work programs leading up to the
FSA (e.g., California's Greater Avenues for Independence [GAIN] program), but much of it deals
directly with the experiences of providing adult basic and literacy education to JOBS participants.
This Practice Application Briefreviews some of these research findings and describes their
implications for practice.
What Does the Research Say?
Evaluation studies of employment and training programs, including the Comprehensive
Employment and Training Act (CETA), the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA), and JOBS, are one
body of research that can inform practice. This research has been conducted over the past 20 years
primarily on demonstration programs designed to improve the basic skills and employability of
disadvantaged adults. A synthesis (Cohen et al. 1994) of this research resulted in the following
conclusions that have a bearing on the role of adult basic and literacy education in welfare–to–work
programs:
Because they use traditional pedagogical approaches for which many adults have little tolerance,
adult basic and literacy education programs have experienced difficulty attracting and retaining
participants. Furthermore, many low–skilled adults see no connection between this traditional
approach and their primary goal of getting a

Understand The Importance Of Literacy In Early Education
As the educational system moves forward, more consideration is being placed on the importance of
literacy in early education to better prepare them for higher rates of success in school. Therefore,
teachers must have an understanding of the significance of adolescent and childhood development
which would aid teachers to effectively develop the appropriate educational activities, which
supports both the changing curriculum and assuring that the educational activities of the class
corresponds with the capabilities of all the students.
Teachers must understand the importance of developing factual knowledge and conceptual
understanding of adolescent and childhood development, in all aspects and domains of the child;
which are physical, social, emotional and cognitive (Stewart 2010). This knowledge aids teachers to
effectively develop content and curriculum appropriate for the age of the students. It is also
important for teachers to recognize that children develop intellectually at different rates, and that
each child's cognitive development may differ and not be at the same stage as other students. ...

Assess The Role Of Literacy In Education
It is a proven fact through the ages that knowledge is power, and the way to achieve unbridled
knowledge is to be informed by having the ability to read and comprehend text. In addition, the
ability to comprehend text coupled with one's ability to express thoughts through written form is a
powerful combination. Ippolito, Steele, & Samson (2008). puts it this way, if knowledge is power,
then literacy opens the door to the whole kingdom. Ippolito et al. (2008) goes on to point out that the
ability to have access to book learning was often limited to a privileged minority and this practice
continues in different areas of the world today. This day and age where society is driven by digital
technology, the availability of written text is so much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

appropriate reading materials that can be made available to cover the diverse interests of students as
well as range in difficulty to cover the different material needs students may have. Teachers must
use explicit and close instruction to work with students in an effort to be more effective. In addition,
teachers need administrative support and professional development training to bridge the gap
between cultural backgrounds and school literacy, make their content an essential way of learning,
detect when young people are not connecting with text and step in and provide strategies that help
students learn more effectively, start discussions with students that are real and can be related to real
life experiences, and provide learning environments that encourage students to engage in critical
explorations of texts as they thoroughly examine texts in an effort to discover meaning and

The Importance Of Visual Literacy In Education
In the technological visual age, students are exposed to visual stimuli more now than in any time in
history. According to Topiel (2015), "students move away from strict print reading, and journey into
a world of literacy that is predominantly visual, sensory and technologically loaded in other ways,
visual literacy instruction is becoming paramount for [learners]" (para. 2). Visual literacy is the
ability to "read" images portrayed through a visual medium. Much of the literature agrees that
reading the images equates to understanding the messages communicated through the visual
mediums within an image and selectively convey information from visual mediums into the
teaching or presentation material (Jones–Kavalier & Flannigan, 2006; Schaffhauser, 2012; Topiel,
2015). Knowledge of visual literacy impacts learning by providing learners opportunities for better
recall, understanding, and connections to the material presented because the message within the
images which, when purposefully chosen will add to the meaning (American Library Association,
2011; Murphy, 2016). Therefore, understanding the reasons and how to apply visual literacy in
educational formats to convey the intended message within the curriculum is imperative to the
curriculum developer and educator. First, as a curriculum developer and educator, we must
understand why visual literacy is essential and how it fits into the educational system. A set of
standards adopted by many states define student learning and

The Importance Of Literacy In Education
As a part of the special American dream of "equal opportunity," education plays a significant role in
seeking to close the gaps in local communities between people in different socioeconomic
circumstances. America has shown to be one of the top countries in the world but is undermined by
the decline of literacy among citizens. According to a 2016 recent study conducted by the U.S.
Department of Education, 32 million of American adults are illiterate, 21 percent read below a 5th
grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates are functionally illiterate. Functional illiteracy
is the inability to manage daily living and tasks that requires reading skills beyond the basic level. A
person who is functionally illiterate will affect their life and provide them with less career
opportunities. As a result, illiteracy affects the larger population as a whole. It correlates with
underemployment, poverty, crime, and substandard health and nutrition. Considered the greatest
threat to education, poverty directly impacts the educational experience for both students and
teachers. For such problem to be solved, there must be an effort to promote literacy. An approach
could be exposing children to reading and reaching out to parents to read and engage with their
children. Teaching children to read isn't expensive. There just needs to be a family and community
effort to get illiterate parents to adult literacy classes and to read and engage with children. Local

Laramie county is home to 6,727 children under the age of five. These children are the future of an
everchanging world, it is essential that they have access to age appropriate books in their homes.
The correlation between poverty and illiteracy is extremely profound. Early childhood learning
shapes the foundation for future education, and children are falling behind by being under exposed,
and are not prepared for kindergarten. Parents are failing to facilitate early learning, and using
television as a replacement. The need for raising awareness surrounding the importance of early
childhood literacy and access to age appropriate reading material for all children under the age of
five that implements a lifelong foundation for a healthy loving relationship with literacy is evident.
Currently, literacy interventions are focused on implementing early interventions when children
begin school. However, this is problematic because first, all kids do not attend school, and second
this relationship with literacy develops far before kindergarten. Many children are not retaining
skills taught to them even when enrolled in school, and participating in interventions. The NAEYC
describes "Children's early reading and writing learning, in other words, is embedded in a larger

reading and writing." The research shows that engaging with, allowing children to participate in an

The Importance Of Literacy Education

  • 1. The Importance Of Literacy Education The Four Resources Model supports teachers in designing an effective primary, literacy–learning classroom environment. More importantly, it permits students to become communicators in correlated, or interdependent elements of language use (Cambridge Assessment, 2013). This significant approach to literacy describes the accessible resources children require to be literate, which include code breaking, text participating, text using and text analysing (Luke & Freebody, 1999). The Australian Curriculum is a fundamental foundation. It ensures beginning, emergent, or competent students are learning various language features, comprehend diverse text types and can analytically evaluate the purpose of writing and reading. Critical stages and skills include sound recognition, or oral language acquisition and functional grammar (Cambridge Assessment, 2013). Hence, emphasising an initial focus on engaging students and the significance of teacher modeling to build knowledge of the field is identified (Leslie S. Rush, 2004). Literacy education is briefly outlined, through the strengths of the Four Resources Model. The key aspect discussed is that it attempts to recognise and incorporate many of the current and well developed techniques for training all students in becoming literate critical thinkers (Luke & Freebody, 1999). More importantly, the model is perceived as a map of possible practices. Specifically, the reading and writing levels of students assist teachers to design ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Essay Early Literacy in Education Introduction "Literacy learning has a profound and lasting effect on the social and academic lives of children. Their future educational opportunities and career choices are directly related to literacy ability. Since early childhood is the period when language develops most rapidly, it is imperative that young children are provided with a variety of developmentally appropriate literacy experiences throughout each day, and that the classroom environment is rich with language, both spoken and printed. Early childhood teachers are responsible for both understanding the developmental continuum of language and literacy and for supporting each child's literacy development. Literacy learning begins at birth and develops rapidly during the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children can take more than one of these steps at the same time. This list of steps, though, gives you a general idea of how your child will progress toward reading." (Helping your child become a reader) While these ideas may seem structured, it is also important to allow children to be creative and use their imagination. Although reading is imperative, too many arrangements and rules can turn a child off and lead to feelings of resentment, anger, and resistance. Reading should be set to the tone and pace of the child. Emergent Readers As the standards of education change a consistent factor remains the focus on reading. Early childhood educators must provide an atmosphere that is both developmentally stimulating to the student while also meeting the standards of education. The methods used to help recognize phonics and begin the transition into emergent readers vary from student to student. Without the foundation of phonics research shows that a child will not learn to read. All children must know the alphabet in order to communicate effectively. Phonics cannot be drilled into the child. This will only produce memorization. Instead, educators must understand a child's individual needs as well as balance. There is no true need to teach phonics as a separate subject. Most children will develop a sense of curiosity from their own knowledge, ideas, and interest. There will of course be a select few that may benefit from a more formal instruction. When children ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Importance Of Literacy In Education Literacy is a vital skill necessary to thrive or even function in today's society. Researchers estimated that 25% of American students had mild to severe reading problems (Margolis, 2004). Reading problems can emotionally devastate children and compromise their future. A lot of professional literature focuses on preventing, identifying, and remediating reading problems. During my case study, I noticed that the majority of struggling students have a psychological dilemma that is motivating the problem. The majority of the individuals that struggle to learn how to read have a condition in the wiring of their brain that makes the skill difficult for them to pick up. Poverty level and economic hardship that make learning feel unimportant or stressful may also cause the problem (Portugal & Fundazioa, 2010). It is very important for teachers to understand what is going on in the lives of children. With this understanding, reading instruction and every type of learning would be more effective. The child can receive help for the psychological difficulties and can be taught in a way that will help him respond to and retain lesson material. Struggling readers need personalized, focused, and assessment–driven instruction. In other words, they need interventions that work. The most important aspects of literacy are oral language, phonemic awareness, word recognition, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing. Books can open the door to child's imagination, or they can represent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Importance Of Literacy Instruction In Education Introduction Literacy instruction is a large focus to the curriculum we as educators follow at Remsen Elementary. Remsen strives for excellence in literacy education and provides a variety of instruction literacy plans in order to support student learning. As stated by our district, "Explode the Code", Wilson's Fundations (grade K–3), Leveled Literacy Intervention Curriculum, and Literacy Centers are used with fidelity. Along with these primary instructional resources, interventions and supplemental learning opportunities help teachers to monitor student progress closely through a carefully conceived, supported, and sustained Response to Intervention program (elementary level), and the use of purposeful and comprehensive assessment and progress monitoring program (grade PK–12) to measure student growth and achievement. Furthermore, our "Guide to Response to Intervention (RTI) and Instruction" details our full curricula and materials at REMSEN, PK–12" (REFERENCE WEBSITE). Through my experience teaching the Fundations Wilson Language phonics program and my conversations with our literacy teacher and fellow kindergarten teacher, Remsen has invested much time into implementing this program school wide with the belief that a separate phonics time aside from English language arts instruction is of great benefit to students. Through my classroom observations and discussions with our K–3 literacy teacher as well as other K–3 teachers, Fundations Wilson Language Program is designed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At the same time, mass media plays an important role in shaping students' attitude toward various social issues. Kellner and Share (2007, P.60) defined the concept of critical media literacy: Critical media literacy is an educational response that expands the notion of literacy to include different forms of mass communication, popular culture, and new technologies. It deepens the potential of literacy education to critically analyze relationships between media and audiences, information, and power. Along with this mainstream analysis, alternative media production empowers students to create their own messages that can challenge media texts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Leading For Literacy : Promoting Quality Education Leading for Literacy Promoting Quality Education In summary of chapter 5 Promoting Quality Education written by Joseph Murphy, I have discerned that Mr. Murphy has reviewed extensively the research conducted during the last 20 years on reading. In this chapter he discusses ways to improve reading skill and literacy based on this review of research. During his analysis he has supplied valuable information on how to evaluate literacy, how to teach literacy and the importance of having strong literacy teachers in the primary grades. (Murphy, 2004) Mr. Murphy it seems believes that the effectiveness of the teacher is of the most significance to student progress. Therefore, in order to raise the quality of reading skill and literacy we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rate a child makes progress is dependent on the quality of instruction and content delivery. Which again strengthens the research that states the teacher is the most important element in the classroom and has more of an effect on early literacy than approach or reading programs. (Murphy, 2004) Mr. Murphy explains that we must train our teacher to present high quality literacy instruction by reviewing and explaining two varying topics; 1) managing the learning environment and 2) delivery of academic content. Numerous elements are involved in quality instruction and the inclusion of these help to make significant gains. One of these is routine, which is thought to be essential, but a teacher must also be flexile enough to make changes that will adapt to particular situations that can occur within a classroom setting rapidly. (Murphy, 2004) Managing the Learning Environment The environment of the classrooms can either promote or negate success of the learning process. Mr. Murphy has identifies six factors that research is proving to help increase reading achievement in the pre–k –3rd grades. These factors are: 1) teacher centrality – means that a teacher supervises directly the students in order to guide and organize the reading instruction, 2) task orientation – is explained as a businesslike teacher/student relationship, where the academic task completion is the primary goal, 3) challenging and ... • 13. The Importance Of Digital Literacy In Education 2. According to Kervin (2016), play promotes "language and literacy skills. Language is the currency of social interactions and school achievement" (p. 64). The social relationship drives children to develop creative practices and helps them to identify real purpose through problem solving skills. Through adult support and imaginative play, children develop language skills from a language–rich environment that reinforces opportunities through meaningful social interactions. 3. According to McKee–Waddell (2015), the definition of digital literacy is "the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills" (p. 26). To create a more all–inclusive classroom, educators are using digital technology instruction to enable, engage, and facilitate a meaningful learning experience. As digital literacy evolves, so should the delivery of instruction. Today, educators can teach writing, which is critical in preparing students for their college or career path. Consequently, the evolving technologies coupled with the teaching methodologies provide a positive classroom atmosphere that increases student achievement by offering opportunities for critical thinking writing skills, which set the groundwork for lifetime learning. 4. Gunayden & Karamete (2016) believe, it is necessary for teachers to utilize new technology that is appropriate for younger generations. "It is an educator's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Importance Of Literacy In Education Literacy As a child, I never had books read to me. It was not really part of the middle–class lifestyle in Punjab, where I was born and lived for 5 years. In Punjab, I completed two years of early education known as LKG (lower kindergarten) and UKG (upper kindergarten). The school I went to, although a high SES school, did not have a library where we would go to read picture books. Moreover, the books we did have for 'English' were a compilation of poems and stories, with very few pictures. Poems or story was read by the teacher, and then told the 'moral' of the story. Nothing more. Neither was there any extrapolation nor exploration of character or plots. Although, it was taught in school it was still a second language for me. Nieto (1992) asserts that the language students bring along impacts their learning, and teachers often want to take away the student's language and culture. I was often told to speak English at home, and at home I was told to speak Punjabi. Teachers who want to create equity in class may in fact, by ignoring differences, by accepting the dominant culture as a norm (Nieto, 1992). Many teachers expect that students know how to 'talk books', because it is 'nature', however it heavily underpinned by nature (Heath, 1982). Understanding the culture and the type of home literacies students practice in is imperative in providing the appropriate support for the student. • 19. Digital Literacy And The Public Education Discussion Post #4 How important is 'digital literacy' considered to be in our current public education? How important do you think digital literacy is? The American Library Association defines digital literacy as the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills. This definition is important to the discussion of the digital divide, defined by Morse (2004) as "inequitable use of computer technology" (p. 268). We learned from our readings that the divide between lower SES students and their wealthier counterparts in terms of first, access to technology (hardware, software, broadband Internet) and second, what Banister and Fischer (2010) called the "opportunity for use" (p. 3). With increased government funding over the past two decades, schools have seen access to technology improve. Warschauer and Matuchniak (2011) explained the significance of the federal government 's e–Rate program, which has provided a whopping $2 billion per year for broadband and Internet access for schools (p. 188). Yet the softer costs, such as technical support staff, and which are not funded by the federal government mean that even when the infrastructure and actual hardware and software are present, teachers and students may be unable to access them. The interesting divide is also largely based on SocioEconomic Status: the opportunity for use of technology. The expectations for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Negative Effects Of Teaching Literacy In Education Throughout Michigan, the way high schools teach literacy does not prepare you for after high school. They do not prepare you enough for the next grade. According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, about half of the jobless people from age sixteen to twenty–one are not able to get a decent job from not be functional literate (Reading). I think one of the big problems is many of the teachers just give you the basic for the assignments and tell you to go at it. They do not connect what they are teaching to beyond the classroom. There are so many ways to teach classes, but each class should not be taught the same way. Having a teacher that teaches multiple subjects can affect the student's literacy. It can have a very negative effect on the students. The teachers could have a degree in that subject, but that doesn't mean they are excellent teachers. Many schools are lowering their standards for teachers, which does not help the future of the students. "It is little wonder that in comparison with the rest of the developed world, our standards are slipping. It takes more than a good degree to make a good teacher." (Lovely), The teacher is not very enthusiastic about the subject, which affects how they teach. How these teachers teach make a impacted on how these students understand literacy. Students will start not caring about it, because whenever they need help or ask questions, the teacher will focus on other kids. To fix the problem, teachers need to teach more ... • 23. My Autobiography Of Education : My Literacy Of Music I have been working on both of my literacies for most of my life, but I only knew of one. When I was about three years old, a lady named Miss Donna started coming to my house once a week and sat at the kitchen table with me playing games. I didn't know it at the time, but she was a representative of the local Head Start school for pre–kindergarten children. I couldn't start there until I was four, so she came to my house and taught me things. This was the very beginning of my literacy of education. My other literacy just isn't that easy; it is music. Everyone listens to music literally from the day they are born. It is in elevators, commercials, our cars, and even our public bathrooms. I have no idea at what age I began to love music so much, but one of my first memories of trying to create it came in the fifth grade. I was sitting in my bedroom with my dad's laptop and headphones. I was listening to Aerosmith's "Dream On" on a loop on YouTube. I was trying to memorize the lyrics and hit that god forsaken screaming note at the very end. Just when I thought I had the song mastered, I look up and my parents and little sister are peeking around the corner giggling like school girls at my blood curling attempt to emulate the great Steven Tyler. Our literacies have to start somewhere, and for the most part, with someone. Never would I have imagined at the moment when I seen my family laughing hysterically at my true attempt of singing, that I would one day be standing in front ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In an interview Bergmann stated "Technology benefits us a lot, we have a reward system that is positive reinforcement which we use technology a lot with this. Bergmann uses technology in her work due to the fact that she works in an area where technology outside of the classroom is not as common. Her work uses technology as a reinforcement for students that have done good work to do with grammar, writing or even mathematics. These students know that if they work hard and strive to learn they will be rewarded for that which is the reason they are motivated to do good work. Jordan Plummer in the interview with her also agreed that technology was motivating to her students: "Students love using the computer so it does help to drive their motivation to get started. • 27. The Importance Of Literacy In Education As the agreement that literacy is the center of all learning grows, the expectations for teachers to help students are too. In this proposal I will be stating findings from the NCTE, these surveys involved over 3,000 classroom teachers. All in which helped voice on whether the US was ready for new literacy policies. When you are in middle school you don't realize how important literacy is as you grow older. This mentality continues to stay with you, especially when your teachers don't stress this to you. The problem that occurs most often to me is when you have an English teacher and a science teacher that don't work together to show students that literacy is important. In the Remodeling Literacy Learning survey, they state that schools aren't structured to facilitate educators working together. This would make sense to me because my literacy history reflects this. My teachers were so involved in the work that they had to teach, they wouldn't take the time to ask what the other teachers were doing. I believe they should be all working together and having a plan for the students, so they build a better education system. One that is stronger, as a whole. According to the 2013 report Remodeling Literacy Learning: Making Room for What Works, the structure for remodeling literacy are in place but, the time devoted to them is quite limited. To me, time is going to be always limited. I found in high school that teachers always complained that there was not enough time. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. The Importance Of Literacy In Education In contemporary society, advancement in technology has made it imperative that individuals have proficient literacy and numeracy skills in order to participate in society and contribute economically (Cazden & Beck, 2008; Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008). Furthermore, low literacy rates correlate to unhealthy lifestyle and limited participation in civic life (DeWalt et al., 2004; Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008). Thus, it has become even more important that schools prepare students with adequate literacy and numeracy skills to enable them to succeed in life and progress in their studies. However, these demands are not necessarily being met by schools. According to Australian bureau of statistics (ABS) (2014) there has been a decline in the literacy rates for adults, with 44% of adults lacking the literacy competency required for modern life. Furthermore, evidence suggests that school curriculum and practices do not accommodate for linguistic diversity. PISA has gathered results from 15 years old students in the areas of science literacy, mathematical literacy and reading literacy, which are summarised in table 1 below (Thomas, Bortoli & Underwood, 2017). Australia is a multicultural country, with a great deal of linguistic diversity. Many students in schools have English as an additional language or dialect other than English(EAL/D), this includes students who are born overseas or in Australia whose first language is not English and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students whose ... Education and literacy, provide the key in furthering one's self into new things. Education provides the opportunity to explore one's rights, further ones in their career, and provides independence in a dependent society. Censorship is a very popular debate in society today; supporters of censorship take the stance of it balancing out sensitive topics, which vary. Literacy is important due to the basic fact of reading and understanding the knowledge that is appearing before you. With this skill, it empowers one to ask more questions and to find those answers, and further into education on any subject, without literacy we wouldn't find no cure or invent new products. But, the thirst for knowledge is never ending because there will always be one of the five W's (who, what, when, where, and why). With the skills that we are prepared with in school is provided to help with our furthering adventure into education and opportunities in life, without it we would all be sitting here with the IQ of a newborn. The never ending abyss of topics to learn about grows and grows each day because someone out there is learning and taking the chance to learn something new to further them into their life. Not only does the increased knowledge help, but usually those with more education get the higher paying jobs, which helps out in many ways. For any teacher to be able to pass on sound knowledge of education to their scholars irrespective of the race or language of instruction they must have a pattern of teaching and monitor the progress of the students. The teachers must have a one on one or intimate teaching relationship with their scholars for them to have sound understanding on how to carry out their teaching pattern. Once the teacher is familiar with the scholars, depending on their level of knowledge, the introduction of phonetics and vowels and how to make up words through, speaking, reading and listening will be the basic teaching pattern (Richards & Rodgers 2001, p.21). The language of instruction must be put into consideration since most of the scholars are classified as international students. They have to be instructed in a clear and loud voice and every word or assignment being taught has to be repeated before and after writing it down on the blackboard (Richards & Rodgers, 2001, p.11). On achieving this, great emphasis will be laid on the introduction of the different parts of speech or structuring of grammar and rhetoric (e.g. phrases, clauses and sentences) which will help the students build up on how to make sentences and where to ... • 37. 21st Century Literacy In Education Part A The digital world we live in is constantly changing and updating to include the most efficient technology for everyday use. Children in today's society have grown up using the latest smartphones, tablets, computers and televisions. It is no surprise that technology has made it's way into schools and incorporated into classroom instruction. Robinson, McKenna and Conradi state that "technology in schools is here to stay...students must now be able to navigate hypermedia and to compose using not only word processing software but desktop publishing systems capable of integrating multimedia. The times, they are a–changin" (Robinson, McKenna & Conradi, 2012, p. 223). Robinson, McKenna and Conradi discuss in their research about a common myth of 21st– Century literacy; that "21st–century literacy is about technology only" (Robinson, McKenna & Conradi, 2012, p. 227). As an educator, I agree with Robinson, McKenna and Conradi that 21st– Century literacy is not only about technology. Technology is a wonderful supplement to learning literacy, however it does not take the place of learning to read, write and orally communicate on a daily basis. "Studies of workforce readiness show that employers rate written and oral communication skills very highly, and collaboration, work ethic, critical thinking, and leadership all rank higher than proficiency in information technology" (Robinson, McKenna & Conradi, 2012, p. 227). Philosophy of Literacy Education Personal Philosophy of Literacy Education Throughout my first year as a middle school Language Arts teacher, I have developed a theoretical understanding of what I believe are the necessary components to providing a meaningful and generative environment in which students develop and expand literacy skills. The teaching of literacy needs to include a balance of reading, writing, speaking and listening activities, and needs to be a social endeavor that provides a variety of instructional strategies to meet the needs of all diverse learners. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Literacy cannot be learned through multiple lessons taught solely in isolation. Instead, it must be learned in a comprehensive manner, in which various literacy skills are fully–integrated. Vygotsky (1987) is the theorist who appears to have had the greatest influence on literacy researchers working from a social constructivist perspective. Vygotsky's approach to learning was holistic in nature, and he advocated the study of higher mental functions with all their complexity (Moll, 1990). Research on school literacy learning conducted from a social constructivist perspective suggests that students need to engage in authentic and relevant literacy activities, as opposed to rote memorization or repetitive worksheets contrived for practice (Au, 1998). The fourth element of my philosophy of literacy education is the importance of teaching literacy through bringing relevance, to establish a deep link between the students and the content. My student population is comprised of an array of diverse backgrounds, all coming together in my classroom. Literacy achievement of students of diverse backgrounds can be strengthened by moving from a mainstream orientation to a more diverse orientation, giving greater consideration to issues of ethnicity, primary language, and social class (Au, 1998). However, there is a debate on whether or not literacy should be emphasized in mathematics classrooms and to what extend. In the article Reading in the Disciplines, the author states that some books are written with reading math tips because authors of these books recognize that reading these math textbooks require strategic knowledge and the tips help struggling students with definitions and applications to real world (Lee 13). I loved these types of textbooks as I grew up because I struggled with reading and these texts were easier to read and understand. Then I entered college and I noticed how unbeneficial that was to me and the disservice it actually did to my future college courses. According to the article from Lee and Spratley, "texts such as Glencoe also provide students with fewer opportunities to engage the decontextualized nature of the mathematics that students are more likely to meet in college mathematics classes..." (Lee 13). Therefore, we need to prepare our students for the writing, reading, and thinking required by advanced disciplinary coursework. The attempt to educate African–American during the time of slavery gained support from various religious groups; however, Caucasian viewed literacy for African–American as a method for instilling subservience and maintaining social, political and economic control. In contrast, African–American viewed literacy as a component of emancipation and participation in societal institutions on an equal basis. Many African–American activists have thought for blacks by creating different institution such as churches and schools for young blacks to get an education. Currently, the first, second, and third grade teachers are using guided reading and writer's workshop during their literacy instruction to provide an individualized approach to learning. After examination of the PARCC and Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) data for the past three years, literacy is an area of concern for Truman School. The DRA is administered twice a year, in the fall and spring. The number of students reading on grade level significantly drops by third grade. For example, following the same cohort of students, 78% percent of first grade students were reading on grade level during the 2014–2015 school year. By third grade only 39% of students were reading on grade level for the 2016–2017 school year. In the time of Malcolm X, the mid–20th century, education and literacy were valued much more because of the perceived difficulty of gaining them. • 73. The Importance Of Visual Literacy In Education In the technological visual age, students are exposed to visual stimuli more now than in any time in history. According to Topiel (2015), "students move away from strict print reading, and journey into a world of literacy that is predominantly visual, sensory and technologically loaded in other ways, visual literacy instruction is becoming paramount for [learners]" (para. 2). Visual literacy is the ability to "read" images portrayed through a visual medium. Much of the literature agrees that reading the images equates to understanding the messages communicated through the visual mediums within an image and selectively convey information from visual mediums into the teaching or presentation material (Jones–Kavalier & Flannigan, 2006; Schaffhauser, 2012; Topiel, 2015). Knowledge of visual literacy impacts learning by providing learners opportunities for better recall, understanding, and connections to the material presented because the message within the images which, when purposefully chosen will add to the meaning (American Library Association, 2011; Murphy, 2016). Therefore, understanding the reasons and how to apply visual literacy in educational formats to convey the intended message within the curriculum is imperative to the curriculum developer and educator. First, as a curriculum developer and educator, we must understand why visual literacy is essential and how it fits into the educational system. • 75. The Importance Of Literacy In Education As a part of the special American dream of "equal opportunity," education plays a significant role in seeking to close the gaps in local communities between people in different socioeconomic circumstances. America has shown to be one of the top countries in the world but is undermined by the decline of literacy among citizens. According to a 2016 recent study conducted by the U.S. Department of Education, 32 million of American adults are illiterate, 21 percent read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates are functionally illiterate. Functional illiteracy is the inability to manage daily living and tasks that requires reading skills beyond the basic level. A person who is functionally illiterate will affect their life and provide them with less career opportunities. As a result, illiteracy affects the larger population as a whole. It correlates with underemployment, poverty, crime, and substandard health and nutrition. Considered the greatest threat to education, poverty directly impacts the educational experience for both students and teachers. For such problem to be solved, there must be an effort to promote literacy. An approach could be exposing children to reading and reaching out to parents to read and engage with their children. Teaching children to read isn't expensive. There just needs to be a family and community effort to get illiterate parents to adult literacy classes and to read and engage with children. • 77. Education And Education : The Importance Of Early... Laramie county is home to 6,727 children under the age of five. These children are the future of an everchanging world, it is essential that they have access to age appropriate books in their homes. The correlation between poverty and illiteracy is extremely profound. Early childhood learning shapes the foundation for future education, and children are falling behind by being under exposed, and are not prepared for kindergarten. Parents are failing to facilitate early learning, and using television as a replacement. The need for raising awareness surrounding the importance of early childhood literacy and access to age appropriate reading material for all children under the age of five that implements a lifelong foundation for a healthy loving relationship with literacy is evident. Currently, literacy interventions are focused on implementing early interventions when children begin school. However, this is problematic because first, all kids do not attend school, and second this relationship with literacy develops far before kindergarten. Many children are not retaining skills taught to them even when enrolled in school, and participating in interventions. The NAEYC describes "Children's early reading and writing learning, in other words, is embedded in a larger developing system of oral communication. Early literacy is an emerging set of relationships between reading and writing." The research shows that engaging with, allowing children to participate in an active story ...
