Harlem, New York
Harlem, New York in the Twenties was a place where colored people had migrated to show their
talents. It was a time when African American Artist, Writers, Dancers, Musicians, and Doctors
decided to show the world how spectacular they were. Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Langston
Hughes were just a few famous names that arrived during this time. One sensational woman stood
out among the rest, her name was Josephine Baker. She took a stand and fought for what she
believed in, she was a strong and passionate women and she never let anyone get in the way of the
things she loved to do. No matter how risqué or dangerous it may have been.
On June 3rd, 1906 Freda Josephine McDonald was born to a washerwoman, Carrie McDonald and a
Vanderville drummer Eddie Carson. Shortly after Josephine was born her Father abandoned their
family and her Mother remarried a unemployed man named Arthur Martin. Their family would grow
to include a son and two more daughters. When Josephine was just a child she started working to
help her mother support their family. She would clean houses and babysit for wealthy white
families. ( Louck, Haberman)
When she was Thirteen Josephine started waitressing at The Old Chauffer's Club. This is where she
met her first husband Willie Wells. Josephine left home and began her own life. Although her
marriage to Willy Wells didn't last long, she would keep picking up work to support herself. She
started dancing with The Jones Family Band and The Dixie Steppers.

Josephine Tey's The Daughter Of Time
The creation of a detective fiction novel does not always have to be based on the mystery of a crime
or something recent. For an author to shake up the detective fiction world and do something outside
the box is new. The woman bold enough to do this is Josephine Tey and her story The Daughter of
Time.
The daughter of time is based in London with one of Scotland Yard's best detective. Alan Grant is
currently in the hospital from him chasing a criminal and getting his leg caught in a trap door. Grant,
a very active man, find himself to be bored laid up in the hospital. He asks one of his old friends for
some entertainment and she didn't do much but pass on old books. He would spend many nights laid
up in the hospital staring at the roof counting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lest start off with deciding if the crime presented is significant enough to try and solve. Nobody
ever knows the truth behind small parts of history because off so many different stories and so Grant
got this picture of the Middle ages where Richard III facial expression caught his eye. He Figured
out the story behind what had supposedly happened, and it was pretty significant to crack down and
investigate further. Grant is very quick on his feet and observant of his surrounds and the things
presented to him, any man who can remember the exact places and times of nurses is pretty
memorable. Even though a detective story has an outstanding opponent in almost every story in this
one, his injury and history are his true enemies. He is not able to be mobile like he wants to and is
limited to just being in his bed and receiving material from Marta Hallard. Once he starts breaking
down the facts present by legal documents form the middle ages and the facts of the family
involved, you kind of start to wonder what is really going on. Is there possibly a cover up? Was this
an inside Job? A case of Jealousy? With all the facts and pieces of the puzzle pulled together by
Grant he discovers that Richard III was not the murderous Uncle but more like the Unfortunate
Uncle. Henry IV had more to gain from his lies and false

The Portrait Of Edward Hopper
Edward Hopper was a quiet person but his art speaks louder that his words. His paintings are famous
because they are mysterious and his scenes don't seem to be complete. His paintings leave the
viewer with questions which makes his painting even more interesting. Hopper started sketching and
drawing at a very young age. Hopper has struggled throughout his career but in the end, he's made it
to where he is now. When Hopper was young he loved anything to do with art. He was extremely
excited when he got a blackboard one Christmas. He loved how he could draw anything, erase it,
and draw a brand new picture. When he became older he had a pencil and paper everywhere he
went. He loved to observe people but he watched them in a natural habitat ... Show more content on

He also visited Belgium, England, Germany, and France. He even stayed with a french family when
he was in Paris. When he wasn't traveling over to Europe he lived in an apartment in Greenwich
which he moved into in 1913. Hopper lived here for the rest of his life. He hated having to work and
paint for other businesses but that's what he had to do to keep his apartment. Luckily for him, he was
43 years old when he had enough money to quit the job and focus on his paintings more. Most
artists don't immediately get recognized and in Hopper's case, the first painting he ever sold was in
1911. The painting was call Sailing and it sold for $250 or $4300 in today's money. It was also
exhibited at the famous Armory Show. The Armory show introduced American Art World to a new
kind of experimental art of Europe. Getting an invitation to this exhibit was a great honor. So this
was a pretty big deal for him. Sadly, after Sailing he didn't sell another painting for years. He did,
however, continue to work as an illustrator even though he didn't like it. Later, he traveled to
Monhegan, Maine and met Josephine Verstille Nivison. She was a former student of his who studied
under Henri as well. The two had been friends for quite a few years and then they got New York on
July 9, 1924. They were in fact opposites of each other Josephine or Jo was more outgoing and
spoke her thoughts, while Hopper was more soft spoken, quiet, and polite. "Sometimes talking with

The Fight For Women By Charlotte Butler
The Fight for Women
Document 23.2
The British Parliament 's passing of the Contagious Disease Acts in 1866 resulted in Josephine
Butler writing a letter to the International Convention of Women in Washington. The purpose of the
act was to reduce prostitution and sexually transmitted diseases, specifically occurring within the
military forces. Butler's letter included topics, arguments, and political issues women had to work on
even though they were not given the right to vote or engage in politics. Butler starts her letter talking
to the ladies of the Ladies National Association which was assembled in 1869, their goal is to repeal
the Acts of Parliament on 1866–69. She apologizes for her absence at the meeting but her friend
Mrs. Steward was able to attend and be the voice of Butler in the lack of her presence. Butler
suggested the committee needed to elect a delegate who had shown great work in the field and for
her Mrs. Steward was the lady for this position. She had done work not only in England but also
Belgium when English–girls were being bought, stolen, and destroyed under the State–protected
vice. Butler explains that there are not many of the original women left, she says, "There is now a
crowd of younger workers who are bravely preaching the purity crusade and doing excellent
vigilance work; while there are few of the veteran 's left who inaugurated in 1869 the fierce contest
with our Government, the House of Lords and Commons, the Medical Boards, the Press,

Josephine Butler : Patron Of Prostitutions Essay
Josephine Butler: Patron of Prostitutions
Josephine Butler was born on the 13th of April in 1828 in Milfield Hill Northumberland, and she
was the seventh child of John Grey and his wife, Hannah Annett. Born during the Victorian era, she
was a revolutionary activist and a leader of a National Women's Political campaign. Inspired by her
father, who was a leading liberal and agricultural reform in the English border country, Josephine
became aware of the terror of slavery and mistreatment of women, which sparked her care for the
imprisoned and ill prostitutes. During the time, women were not allowed to vote, but Josephine
managed to repeal the Contagious Disease Act, which was an act strongly supported by the public.
This act was passed as a rationale to protect military men from getting sexually transmitted diseases
from prostitutions, but allowed the latter to be sexually assaulted by police officers as they checked
them for venereal disease. By repealing the act, Josephine Butler highlighted the great injustice that
prostitutions faced. Moreover, she also campaigned for higher education for women, and sought
equal suffrages. Nevertheless, she never became the national heroine of her time as compared to
Florence Nightingale, and her accomplishments were much undermined. This essay narrates the
exciting and complex journey of Josephine Butler, the influences she received throughout her life, as
she struggled through her campaign that made her the historical heroine of today.

Essay about A Biography of Josephine Baker
A Biography of Josephine Baker
Josephine Baker was born Freda Josephine MacDonald in St. Louis, Missouri to her unwed parents:
Carrie McDonald and Eddie Carson. Her father soon left the family and Josephine had to help her
mother support herself and her three younger half–siblings. At age eight, she got a job working as a
maid for a white family (Robinson). At age 12, she had dropped out of school to work. By age 14,
she had moved out, been married, and separated from her first husband. She would later go onto
marry and divorce three more men. Never was she financially dependent on any man, including her
husbands.

In 1936, Josephine attempted a return to the United States to star in the Ziegfield Follies. Due to the
still prevalent racism in the United States, she was greeted with negative reviews. Americans were
not yet ready to embrace a black woman as sophisticated and powerful, despite her success in
Europe (About).
Just a few years later, World War II spread across Europe. Josephine helped out France in every way
she could: performing for troops, being an honorable correspondent for the French Resistance
(smuggling secret messages), and serving as a sub–lieutenant in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force
(About). For her efforts, she was later awarded the Medal of the Resistance with Rosette and dubbed
a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.
In the 50s and 60s, Josephine returned to the United States to help fight racism. She refused to
perform in any club or theatre that was not integrated (Lewis). This resulted in the breaking of the
color bar in many establishments, especially in Las Vegas. May 20 was named Josephine Baker day
by the NAACP for her efforts. Part of her fight against racism came in the form of the "Rainbow
Tribe." She adopted 12 children to demonstrate that "children of different ethnicities and religions
could still be brothers" (About). The children would sometimes

Pros And Cons Of Rizal

SS14– A1 Retraction Controversy
On Dr. Jose Rizal's day of execution, many supposition circulated about him revoking his words and
his actions. This issue became a long term debate from then on until now. Some people profess that
Jose Rizal retracted while others assert that he did not. This controversy cannot be ignored
especially that we are talking about a man who has been recognized as the national hero of the
country. One of the definitions of a hero and also my definition, is a person who is willing to die for
the sake of others while a national hero is a person willing to die for the country, the point is if
Rizal's retraction papers were true, it only proves that he could not die for our country and I would
be disappointed that he was declared as our national hero.
According to my research, the person behind Rizal's retraction papers was ... Show more content on

Rizal ask forgiveness to his father for the pain that Jose Rizal pays his father after giving him
education while Jose Rizal told his brother that he will die with a clean conscience. With these
information, it proves that Jose Rizal is not afraid to die and had accepted the truth that he will come
to an end.
In the modern time, several investigations occur, analyzing if the retraction papers of Jose Rizal
were valid. Ricardo Pascual who studied many documents of Rizal claimed that the retraction letter
was not written by Jose Rizal. Famous personalities like Senator Rafael Palma believe that Jose
Rizal I has a mature personality and retraction is not Jose Rizal's thing.
After my research, I clearly know what side am I on. I believe that Dr. Jose Rizal did not retract.
Jose Rizal wanted to retract is because he wanted to marry Josephine Bracken but there are no proof,
no certificates and witnesses. Dona Trining cleared out that Jose Rizal did not marry Bracken and
Jose Rizal had never spoken about marriage to his

Josephine Tey's The Daughter Of Time
Until I read The Daughter of Time, I liked history. This was fortunate, since the curriculum my
mother used to homeschool me and my sisters was literature based, and as a result, we read a lot of
historical fiction. Some I enjoyed more than others, but over the years, as I grew to be quite a
voracious reader, historical fiction remained one of my most commonly read genres. And as my
reading comprehension developed, classic literature and several historical biographies slipped into
my reading list. I knew I enjoyed history, but only in a vague, half–conscious manner. The fact that
many of the books I read were award–winning and historically accurate was incidental.
Enter Josephine Tey and Richard III. When I was around fifteen, a friend of my mother's
recommended that we try BBC Radio. Accordingly we found the site; and the book that was
currently airing was The Daughter of Time.

sister why I emitted a near–squeal of delight when I saw a photo of the Book of Kells' chi rho page.
I had always liked history. Now, thanks to Elizabeth MacKintosh and The Daughter of Time, I love
history. This book piqued my curiosity and through research, opened the way to discover something

Thomas More's Sainthood Essay
Thomas More's Sainthood
Thomas More's sainthood has been under great controversy even after a century of his death. It was
not until 1866 that he was declared a saint. This declaration came about after many debates and
votes of acceptance both by the people and by the church. While the English Church was still bound
by King Henry VIII's Supremacy Act, Thomas More was rumored to have been a deceitful character
of the court. He was declared unorthodox who went against the Church (Roper, 1935). He was also
said to have gone against the doctrines of the church because he went against the King of England.
In modern times the portrayal of, partially, Richard the III and Thomas More is seen to be
compassionate and kind to their people. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

To keep himself out of trouble, he decided to keep his mouth shut on the matter. Morally, he was
obligated to protect his friend and King for he was the chancellor of the court. Religiously he had a
duty to God which he could not deny. He did not want to go against God's rules; therefore, he chose
the middle course. Despite all of this, he was prosecuted and killed.
MORE'S RELIGIOUS BELIEFS
There seems to be little doubt that More did consider at one point becoming a priest. In this play
More says, "God's my god...But I find him rather too subtle.... I don't know where He is or what He
wants." When his sentence was read out, More spoke freely and revealed that he was totally unable
to see the sense of the oath of supremacy. "I am able to produce
against one bishop which you can produce, a hundred holy and Catholic bishops for my opinion;
and against one realm, the consent of Christendom for a thousand years." (Bolt, 63) This conflict
with the Church, and his feelings towards the holy bishop shows that he was attached to his beliefs.
Perhaps the contradiction between the two great men (Richard and More) originated within the
church.
By not obeying King Henry, he also fell from the king's list of good men. This only made is

An Analysis Of Dr. Samuel Mudd
Mud is a slimy sticky mixture of solid material with a liquid, the most common is soft wet earth.
Mud is also known as an abusive and malicious remark or accusation; frequently in the political
game, contestants will sling "mud" at each other to damage their opponent's reputation and gain the
favor of supporters. These political contestants may go as far to say "One's name is mud", which is
used to express a strong dislike for a person implying their reputation is no better than the slimy
sticky dirt one walks on. This phrase may have been coined from the story of Dr. Samuel Mudd, the
physician that treated John Wilkes Booth's broken leg after his assassination of President Lincoln,
who was convicted of conspiracy and later pardoned after three year served. The events that befell
Dr. Mudd are true but his name did not coin the term "one's name is mud" even though it may be the
perfect parable correlating to the expression. The truth behind the phase is that it originates from the
Oxford English Dictionary which documented its meaning four decades before the assassination
along with a book from Britain, A Dictionary of Turf by John Bee, using the connotation of this
expression long before the assassination. This type of misconception is the pitfall of history. A
historian must be ever mindful of where they gather the information that will form their opinions of
past events. The story of Dr. Mudd is like another tale still shrouded in the mists of time. The story

Josephine Baker: A Breakthrough Starlet of the 1920's
Ask anyone who the great starlet of the 1920s was and they will all say the beautiful and talented
Josephine Baker. Josephine was known by many names, Freda Josephine McDonald her birth name,
Josephine Baker her stage name, as well as "Black Venus", "Black Pearl" and Creole Goddess
(Louck "The Official Josephine Baker Website"). No matter whom Josephine was known as this
does not distinguish the amount of work succeeded by Baker. Josephine Baker was an African
American who broke free from racial offense by playing an important role in the Harlem
Renaissance and showing people that she could become a respected dancer regardless of her race.
Josephine was born in St. Louis, Missouri on June 3, 1906 to Carrie McDonald a washerwoman and
Eddie Carson a vaudeville drummer. Freda Josephine McDonald grew up in East St. Louis in the
prime time that many black were crossing the Mississippi river, which made a big impression on
Baker as a teenager. Josephine was very independent and did not depend on a man for financial
support. By the age of 13, Josephine had joined The Jones Family Band, where she carried to
completion various comical skits. After the troupes split, Baker auditioned as a chorus girl for the
Dixie Steppers in Shuffle Along. At first Josephine was declined because she was "too skinny and
too dark" (Louck "The Official Josephine Baker Website"). This in no way discouraged Baker.

Josephine battled two other women for the title of the most photographed woman in the world, and
by 1927 she earned more than any entertainer in Europe. She starred in two movies in the early
1930s and moved her family from St. Louis to Les Milandes, her estate in Castelnaud–Fayrac,
France. A 1936 return to the United States to star in the Ziegfield Follies proved disastrous, despite
the fact that she was a major celebrity in Europe. American audiences rejected the idea of a black
woman with so much sophistication and power. Newspaper reviews were equally cruel (The New

She served France during World War II in many ways. She performed for the troops, and was an

Golden Age of Crime Fiction
"Crime does not exist; only act exist and it is these acts that are deemed right or wrong in each given
society"
This is obvious that Crime violates the moral and social law, that law which society and government
finds legitimate.
During 1920s–1930s, the period of World Wars, the genre of Detective Fictions flourished and
influenced people. Their popularity, obviously gain support because of the cleverness of murder,
styles and detective methods. Generally, a detective fiction starts with a general discussion and
introduction of characters, to make readers analyse personality and nature of characters, then a crime
took place, for which the family of the victim appoints a private detective, he is considered an
outsiders as he does not entirely belongs to Police department. The police, on the other hand acts
very intelligent, but they lack in imagination, this is where a detective plays crucial role. Sometimes,
the detective is accompanied by Assistant, who also helps on his part to find clues and suspect, in
some cases assistant becomes narrator as well. The important and most helpful part of detective
fiction is the crime scene. Crime scene gives every single clue to reach on the way to the criminal. A
detective fully studies the crime scene and try to examine every position of objects.

Edgar Allan Poe's Tale
Mystery story or mystery, fictional genre in which the foundations of a mysterious happening,
frequently a crime, is regularly discovered by the hero or the heroine; this is achieved through a
combination of intelligence, inventiveness, the rational interpretation pf evidence, and from time to

While Jim Crow laws were reeking havoc on the lives of African Americans in the South, a massed
exodus of Southern musicians, particularly from New Orleans, spread the seeds of Jazz as far north
as New York City. A new genre of music produced fissures in the walls of racial discrimination
thought to be impenetrable. Musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, "King" Oliver and
Fletcher Henderson performed to the first desegregated audiences. Duke Ellington starred in the first

paid off when Baker acquired her first stage appearance at the Booker T. Washington Theater, St.

"The manager of the Dixie Steppers took a liking to Baker and decided to make her part of the

Analysis Of The Book ' Daughter Of Time '
Josephine Tey's Daughter of Time is a story that gives the reader a role in being a detective, filling in
Sherlock Holmes 's shoes but with a twist. Within the first few chapters we meet Alan Grant, a
famous inspector from England 's Scotland Yard. He is confined in a hospital after sustaining an
injury, leaving him immensely bored during his recovery there. Where he would trace and map out
ceiling cracks for hours; after awhile he became acquainted with the nurses that would come in and
out of his room. His actress friend Marta brings printed materials for Grant to read but he would
reject them, the reason is not known. His antsy behavior shows that he craves a mental challenge.
Grant eventually got what he wanted; Marta suggested that he should try solving an old mystery that
no one has managed to solve. She brings him pictures, portraits of faces from different historical
eras. During his recovery, he spends time analyzing the collection that Marta provides him. It's clear
that Grant adopts Carr's and Elton's methodology into solving this case and without either of them it
wouldn't be possible. He came across a picture of Richard III, who had accusations of killing his two
nephews; his Brother Edward IV 's sons. It is evident that Grant takes pride in his skills as an
inspector and speculates that Edward III is not the perpetrator of the murders. From that point he
undertakes the task of learning British history. Finding clues and piecing them together, disregarding

Summary Of The Daughter Of Time By Josephine Tey
Napoleon Bonaparte once stated that "history is the version of past events that people have decided
to agree upon." As evolution continues we see a change in not only what the future may bring, but
also what the past may have to offer. The history we are taught is based on the teachings and
readings of others, as it is clear that reliable resources are limited because we simply were not
around during those specific times. The Daughter of Time, by Josephine Tey proves this exact
notion; that in actuality, what may have been relayed to us historically may not have been the entire
truth, but who are we to claim that or disprove such things?
After an unfortunate accident landing him in the hospital, main character Grant looks for some
pastimes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though at the end of the book, Tey's clear message leads us to believe that Richard in fact was
innocent of all the crimes he was claimed to have committed, how can we be certain?
Authors like Tey pushed for a society to not only question the surroundings of the world, but look
deeper into we are being told and taught. What one may believe, with the right attitude and
supporting detail, may be enough to change the minds of many who are easily manipulated.
Each and every time period creates pieces of works that reflect the very time they are living in, this
being proven by the works written on Richard the third. While some were stuck on the notions that
Richard did in fact kill his nephews, works portrayed him as a pious and unforgiving man looking
for power, disregarding all costs even his family. On the opposite side of the spectrum we read
pieces of history that completely defend Richard the third and wonder why he had not done more to
protect his reputation believing that he did not do what was claimed to have done.
It is also indeed the hope that a nation believes in that affects what is

Shortly after Josephine was born her Father abandoned their family and her Mother remarried a unemployed man named Arthur Martin. Their family would grow to include a son and two more daughters. • 3. Josephine Tey's The Daughter Of Time The creation of a detective fiction novel does not always have to be based on the mystery of a crime or something recent. For an author to shake up the detective fiction world and do something outside the box is new. The woman bold enough to do this is Josephine Tey and her story The Daughter of Time. The daughter of time is based in London with one of Scotland Yard's best detective. Alan Grant is currently in the hospital from him chasing a criminal and getting his leg caught in a trap door. Grant, a very active man, find himself to be bored laid up in the hospital. He asks one of his old friends for some entertainment and she didn't do much but pass on old books. He would spend many nights laid up in the hospital staring at the roof counting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lest start off with deciding if the crime presented is significant enough to try and solve. Nobody ever knows the truth behind small parts of history because off so many different stories and so Grant got this picture of the Middle ages where Richard III facial expression caught his eye. He Figured out the story behind what had supposedly happened, and it was pretty significant to crack down and investigate further. Grant is very quick on his feet and observant of his surrounds and the things presented to him, any man who can remember the exact places and times of nurses is pretty memorable. Even though a detective story has an outstanding opponent in almost every story in this one, his injury and history are his true enemies. He is not able to be mobile like he wants to and is limited to just being in his bed and receiving material from Marta Hallard. Once he starts breaking down the facts present by legal documents form the middle ages and the facts of the family involved, you kind of start to wonder what is really going on. Is there possibly a cover up? Was this an inside Job? A case of Jealousy? With all the facts and pieces of the puzzle pulled together by Grant he discovers that Richard III was not the murderous Uncle but more like the Unfortunate Uncle. • 5. The Portrait Of Edward Hopper Edward Hopper was a quiet person but his art speaks louder that his words. His paintings are famous because they are mysterious and his scenes don't seem to be complete. His paintings leave the viewer with questions which makes his painting even more interesting. Hopper started sketching and drawing at a very young age. Hopper has struggled throughout his career but in the end, he's made it to where he is now. When Hopper was young he loved anything to do with art. He was extremely excited when he got a blackboard one Christmas. He loved how he could draw anything, erase it, and draw a brand new picture. When he became older he had a pencil and paper everywhere he went. He loved to observe people but he watched them in a natural habitat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also visited Belgium, England, Germany, and France. He even stayed with a french family when he was in Paris. When he wasn't traveling over to Europe he lived in an apartment in Greenwich which he moved into in 1913. Hopper lived here for the rest of his life. He hated having to work and paint for other businesses but that's what he had to do to keep his apartment. Luckily for him, he was 43 years old when he had enough money to quit the job and focus on his paintings more. Most artists don't immediately get recognized and in Hopper's case, the first painting he ever sold was in 1911. The painting was call Sailing and it sold for $250 or $4300 in today's money. It was also exhibited at the famous Armory Show. The Armory show introduced American Art World to a new kind of experimental art of Europe. Getting an invitation to this exhibit was a great honor. So this was a pretty big deal for him. Sadly, after Sailing he didn't sell another painting for years. He did, however, continue to work as an illustrator even though he didn't like it. Later, he traveled to Monhegan, Maine and met Josephine Verstille Nivison. She was a former student of his who studied under Henri as well. The two had been friends for quite a few years and then they got New York on July 9, 1924. They were in fact opposites of each other Josephine or Jo was more outgoing and spoke her thoughts, while Hopper was more soft spoken, quiet, and polite. "Sometimes talking with Eddie is ... • 7. The Fight For Women By Charlotte Butler The Fight for Women Document 23.2 The British Parliament 's passing of the Contagious Disease Acts in 1866 resulted in Josephine Butler writing a letter to the International Convention of Women in Washington. The purpose of the act was to reduce prostitution and sexually transmitted diseases, specifically occurring within the military forces. Butler's letter included topics, arguments, and political issues women had to work on even though they were not given the right to vote or engage in politics. Butler starts her letter talking to the ladies of the Ladies National Association which was assembled in 1869, their goal is to repeal the Acts of Parliament on 1866–69. She apologizes for her absence at the meeting but her friend Mrs. Steward was able to attend and be the voice of Butler in the lack of her presence. Butler suggested the committee needed to elect a delegate who had shown great work in the field and for her Mrs. Steward was the lady for this position. She had done work not only in England but also Belgium when English–girls were being bought, stolen, and destroyed under the State–protected vice. Butler explains that there are not many of the original women left, she says, "There is now a crowd of younger workers who are bravely preaching the purity crusade and doing excellent vigilance work; while there are few of the veteran 's left who inaugurated in 1869 the fierce contest with our Government, the House of Lords and Commons, the Medical Boards, the Press, ... • 9. Josephine Butler : Patron Of Prostitutions Essay Josephine Butler: Patron of Prostitutions Josephine Butler was born on the 13th of April in 1828 in Milfield Hill Northumberland, and she was the seventh child of John Grey and his wife, Hannah Annett. Born during the Victorian era, she was a revolutionary activist and a leader of a National Women's Political campaign. Inspired by her father, who was a leading liberal and agricultural reform in the English border country, Josephine became aware of the terror of slavery and mistreatment of women, which sparked her care for the imprisoned and ill prostitutes. During the time, women were not allowed to vote, but Josephine managed to repeal the Contagious Disease Act, which was an act strongly supported by the public. This act was passed as a rationale to protect military men from getting sexually transmitted diseases from prostitutions, but allowed the latter to be sexually assaulted by police officers as they checked them for venereal disease. By repealing the act, Josephine Butler highlighted the great injustice that prostitutions faced. Moreover, she also campaigned for higher education for women, and sought equal suffrages. Nevertheless, she never became the national heroine of her time as compared to Florence Nightingale, and her accomplishments were much undermined. This essay narrates the exciting and complex journey of Josephine Butler, the influences she received throughout her life, as she struggled through her campaign that made her the historical heroine of today. ... Her father soon left the family and Josephine had to help her mother support herself and her three younger half–siblings. At age eight, she got a job working as a maid for a white family (Robinson). At age 12, she had dropped out of school to work. By age 14, she had moved out, been married, and separated from her first husband. She would later go onto marry and divorce three more men. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1936, Josephine attempted a return to the United States to star in the Ziegfield Follies. Due to the still prevalent racism in the United States, she was greeted with negative reviews. Americans were not yet ready to embrace a black woman as sophisticated and powerful, despite her success in Europe (About). Just a few years later, World War II spread across Europe. Josephine helped out France in every way she could: performing for troops, being an honorable correspondent for the French Resistance (smuggling secret messages), and serving as a sub–lieutenant in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (About). For her efforts, she was later awarded the Medal of the Resistance with Rosette and dubbed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government. In the 50s and 60s, Josephine returned to the United States to help fight racism. She refused to perform in any club or theatre that was not integrated (Lewis). This resulted in the breaking of the color bar in many establishments, especially in Las Vegas. May 20 was named Josephine Baker day by the NAACP for her efforts. • 13. Pros And Cons Of Rizal Bayot, Jezza, B. SS14– A1 Retraction Controversy On Dr. Jose Rizal's day of execution, many supposition circulated about him revoking his words and his actions. This issue became a long term debate from then on until now. Some people profess that Jose Rizal retracted while others assert that he did not. This controversy cannot be ignored especially that we are talking about a man who has been recognized as the national hero of the country. One of the definitions of a hero and also my definition, is a person who is willing to die for the sake of others while a national hero is a person willing to die for the country, the point is if Rizal's retraction papers were true, it only proves that he could not die for our country and I would be disappointed that he was declared as our national hero. Ricardo Pascual who studied many documents of Rizal claimed that the retraction letter was not written by Jose Rizal. Famous personalities like Senator Rafael Palma believe that Jose Rizal I has a mature personality and retraction is not Jose Rizal's thing. After my research, I clearly know what side am I on. • 15. Josephine Tey's The Daughter Of Time Until I read The Daughter of Time, I liked history. This was fortunate, since the curriculum my mother used to homeschool me and my sisters was literature based, and as a result, we read a lot of historical fiction. Some I enjoyed more than others, but over the years, as I grew to be quite a voracious reader, historical fiction remained one of my most commonly read genres. And as my reading comprehension developed, classic literature and several historical biographies slipped into my reading list. I knew I enjoyed history, but only in a vague, half–conscious manner. The fact that many of the books I read were award–winning and historically accurate was incidental. Enter Josephine Tey and Richard III. When I was around fifteen, a friend of my mother's recommended that we try BBC Radio. Accordingly we found the site; and the book that was currently airing was The Daughter of Time. The Daughter of Time is a detective novel written in 1951 by Elizabeth MacKintosh, alias Josephine Tey. It features a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I had to explain to my sister why I emitted a near–squeal of delight when I saw a photo of the Book of Kells' chi rho page. I had always liked history. Now, thanks to Elizabeth MacKintosh and The Daughter of Time, I love history. This book piqued my curiosity and through research, opened the way to discover something that ought to have been obvious, but somehow never was: the people who lived before us lived. They were human beings with thoughts and fears and opinions and troubles. They loved and lied; they died and were (or were not) mourned and forgotten. But first they ... It was not until 1866 that he was declared a saint. This declaration came about after many debates and votes of acceptance both by the people and by the church. While the English Church was still bound by King Henry VIII's Supremacy Act, Thomas More was rumored to have been a deceitful character of the court. He was declared unorthodox who went against the Church (Roper, 1935). He was also said to have gone against the doctrines of the church because he went against the King of England. He did not want to go against God's rules; therefore, he chose the middle course. Despite all of this, he was prosecuted and killed. MORE'S RELIGIOUS BELIEFS There seems to be little doubt that More did consider at one point becoming a priest. In this play More says, "God's my god...But I find him rather too subtle.... I don't know where He is or what He wants." When his sentence was read out, More spoke freely and revealed that he was totally unable to see the sense of the oath of supremacy. "I am able to produce against one bishop which you can produce, a hundred holy and Catholic bishops for my opinion; and against one realm, the consent of Christendom for a thousand years." (Bolt, 63) This conflict with the Church, and his feelings towards the holy bishop shows that he was attached to his beliefs. Perhaps the contradiction between the two great men (Richard and More) originated within the church. By not obeying King Henry, he also fell from the king's list of good men. • 21. An Analysis Of Dr. Samuel Mudd Mud is a slimy sticky mixture of solid material with a liquid, the most common is soft wet earth. Mud is also known as an abusive and malicious remark or accusation; frequently in the political game, contestants will sling "mud" at each other to damage their opponent's reputation and gain the favor of supporters. These political contestants may go as far to say "One's name is mud", which is used to express a strong dislike for a person implying their reputation is no better than the slimy sticky dirt one walks on. This phrase may have been coined from the story of Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician that treated John Wilkes Booth's broken leg after his assassination of President Lincoln, who was convicted of conspiracy and later pardoned after three year served. The events that befell Dr. Mudd are true but his name did not coin the term "one's name is mud" even though it may be the perfect parable correlating to the expression. The truth behind the phase is that it originates from the Oxford English Dictionary which documented its meaning four decades before the assassination along with a book from Britain, A Dictionary of Turf by John Bee, using the connotation of this expression long before the assassination. This type of misconception is the pitfall of history. A historian must be ever mindful of where they gather the information that will form their opinions of past events. • 23. Josephine Baker: A Breakthrough Starlet of the 1920's Ask anyone who the great starlet of the 1920s was and they will all say the beautiful and talented Josephine Baker. Josephine was known by many names, Freda Josephine McDonald her birth name, Josephine Baker her stage name, as well as "Black Venus", "Black Pearl" and Creole Goddess (Louck "The Official Josephine Baker Website"). No matter whom Josephine was known as this does not distinguish the amount of work succeeded by Baker. Josephine Baker was an African American who broke free from racial offense by playing an important role in the Harlem Renaissance and showing people that she could become a respected dancer regardless of her race. Josephine was born in St. Louis, Missouri on June 3, 1906 to Carrie McDonald a washerwoman and Eddie Carson a vaudeville drummer. Freda Josephine McDonald grew up in East St. Louis in the prime time that many black were crossing the Mississippi river, which made a big impression on Baker as a teenager. Josephine was very independent and did not depend on a man for financial support. By the age of 13, Josephine had joined The Jones Family Band, where she carried to completion various comical skits. After the troupes split, Baker auditioned as a chorus girl for the Dixie Steppers in Shuffle Along. At first Josephine was declined because she was "too skinny and too dark" (Louck "The Official Josephine Baker Website"). This in no way discouraged Baker. Josephine battled two other women for the title of the most photographed woman in the world, and by 1927 she earned more than any entertainer in Europe. She starred in two movies in the early 1930s and moved her family from St. Louis to Les Milandes, her estate in Castelnaud–Fayrac, France. A 1936 return to the United States to star in the Ziegfield Follies proved disastrous, despite the fact that she was a major celebrity in Europe. American audiences rejected the idea of a black woman with so much sophistication and power. Newspaper reviews were equally cruel (The New York Times called her a "Negro wench"), and Josephine returned to Europe heartbroken. She served France during World War II in many ways. She performed for the troops, and was an honorable correspondent for the French Resistance (undercover work included smuggling secret messages written on her music sheetsin invisible ink) and a sub–lieutenant in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. She was awarded the Medal of the Resistance and awarded into the Legion of Honor by the French government for hard work and dedication. Josephine visited the United States again during the 50s and 60s with renewed vigor to fight racism. When New York's popular Stork Club refused her service she engaged a head–on media battle with pro–segregation columnist Walter Winchell. The NAACP named May 20 Josephine Baker Day in honor of her efforts. During this time she began adopting children, forming a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Edgar Allan Poe's Tale Mystery story or mystery, fictional genre in which the foundations of a mysterious happening, frequently a crime, is regularly discovered by the hero or the heroine; this is achieved through a combination of intelligence, inventiveness, the rational interpretation pf evidence, and from time to time sheer luck. Even though some criticizers trace the roots of the genre to disparate works as Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Aesop's fables, Aesop's fables, most approve that the Western mystery, wide–ranging with all its conventions, appeared with the publication of Edger Allan Poe's short story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", which was released in Graham's Magazine in April 1841. Essay about Josephine Baker Josephine Baker While Jim Crow laws were reeking havoc on the lives of African Americans in the South, a massed exodus of Southern musicians, particularly from New Orleans, spread the seeds of Jazz as far north as New York City. A new genre of music produced fissures in the walls of racial discrimination thought to be impenetrable. Musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, "King" Oliver and Fletcher Henderson performed to the first desegregated audiences. Duke Ellington starred in the first primetime radio program to feature an African American artist. And a quirky little girl from Missouri conquered an entire country enthralled by her dark skin, curvaceous body and dynamic personality. Josephine Baker was more than ... She left home at the age of 13; waiting tables most of the time and working on stage whenever possible. She joined a group of street musicians who called themselves the Jones Family Band. The work with the Band paid off when Baker acquired her first stage appearance at the Booker T. Washington Theater, St. Louis's black vaudeville house. Also appearing was the all–black dance troupe, the Dixie Steppers. "The manager of the Dixie Steppers took a liking to Baker and decided to make her part of the group. Since he couldn't find anything for her to do onstage, she became a dresser, principally for the troupe's star, Clara Baker."# By 1920, she was married, divorced and married again – the second time to Willie Baker, a Pullman porter, from whom Baker took the name she used on stage. In April 1921, while the Dixie Steppers were touring in Philadelphia, one of the chorus girls hurt herself. For nearly a year, Ms. Baker had been studying the choreography of the show and practicing the steps behind the scenes. Another dancer was aware of Baker's abilities and suggested she fill in for the injured chorus girl. Ms. Baker took her place in the chorus line. Because she was much more lively and animated, she stood out from the rest of the ladies, which, obviously, is not the point of a chorus line. When the lyricist/composer team of Nobel Sissle ... • 33. Analysis Of The Book ' Daughter Of Time ' Josephine Tey's Daughter of Time is a story that gives the reader a role in being a detective, filling in Sherlock Holmes 's shoes but with a twist. Within the first few chapters we meet Alan Grant, a famous inspector from England 's Scotland Yard. He is confined in a hospital after sustaining an injury, leaving him immensely bored during his recovery there. Where he would trace and map out ceiling cracks for hours; after awhile he became acquainted with the nurses that would come in and out of his room. His actress friend Marta brings printed materials for Grant to read but he would reject them, the reason is not known. His antsy behavior shows that he craves a mental challenge. Grant eventually got what he wanted; Marta suggested that he should try solving an old mystery that no one has managed to solve. She brings him pictures, portraits of faces from different historical eras. During his recovery, he spends time analyzing the collection that Marta provides him. It's clear that Grant adopts Carr's and Elton's methodology into solving this case and without either of them it wouldn't be possible. He came across a picture of Richard III, who had accusations of killing his two nephews; his Brother Edward IV 's sons. It is evident that Grant takes pride in his skills as an inspector and speculates that Edward III is not the perpetrator of the murders. From that point he undertakes the task of learning British history. Finding clues and piecing them together, disregarding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Summary Of The Daughter Of Time By Josephine Tey Napoleon Bonaparte once stated that "history is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon." As evolution continues we see a change in not only what the future may bring, but also what the past may have to offer. The history we are taught is based on the teachings and readings of others, as it is clear that reliable resources are limited because we simply were not around during those specific times. The Daughter of Time, by Josephine Tey proves this exact notion; that in actuality, what may have been relayed to us historically may not have been the entire truth, but who are we to claim that or disprove such things? After an unfortunate accident landing him in the hospital, main character Grant looks for some pastimes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though at the end of the book, Tey's clear message leads us to believe that Richard in fact was innocent of all the crimes he was claimed to have committed, how can we be certain? Authors like Tey pushed for a society to not only question the surroundings of the world, but look deeper into we are being told and taught. What one may believe, with the right attitude and supporting detail, may be enough to change the minds of many who are easily manipulated. Each and every time period creates pieces of works that reflect the very time they are living in, this being proven by the works written on Richard the third. While some were stuck on the notions that Richard did in fact kill his nephews, works portrayed him as a pious and unforgiving man looking for power, disregarding all costs even his family. On the opposite side of the spectrum we read pieces of history that completely defend Richard the third and wonder why he had not done more to protect his reputation believing that he did not do what was claimed to have done. It is also indeed the hope that a nation believes in that affects what is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
