Essay on Violence in Television
When families sit down to watch television, they expect to watch family type of shows. Family type
shows meaning rated PG or PG13, sitcoms and movies that do not include weapons, killing, foul
language, and non–socially accepted actions. When children killing, they start to believe that it is
accepted. Do children think that killing and hurting others and themselves have little meaning to the
real life, children can become traumatized. Most killers or violators of the law blame their behavior
on the media, and the way that television portrays violators. Longitudinal studies tracking viewing
habits and behavior patterns of a single individual found that 8–year–old boys, who viewed the most
violent programs growing up, were the most likely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the National Television Violence Study, the context in which violence is portrayed is
as important to its impact as the amount of violence. The study concluded that 66% of children's
programming had violence. Of the shows with violent content three–quarters demonstrated
unpunished violence and when violence occurred 58% of the time, victims were not shown
experiencing pain. That makes the children think that violence is just like riding a bike, simple as
that (NTVS, 1–2).
Parents try not to let their children watch shows that they would watch due to the fact that there is a
lot of violence that occurs. When parents sit down and watch the cartoons that their children are
watching, they can notice that the violence is incredibly higher. The level of violence during
Saturday morning cartoons is higher than the level of violence during prime time. There are 3 to 5
violent acts per hour in prime time, versus the 20–25 acts per hour on Saturday morning. Media
violence is especially damaging to young children (under age 8) because they cannot easily tell the
difference between real life and fantasy. Violent images on television and in movies may seem real
to young children. Viewing violent images can traumatize innocent children (NTVS, 1–2).
There is a strategy to help the children understand that what they are watching is not educational.
You can tell your child that you are

Personal Narrative
Such a peaceful Saturday morning I thought to myself as I lay in a daze on my bed. Contemplating
weather or not it's worth it to crawl out of my bed and watch the early morning cartoons. My friends
at school always seem to fill me in when I miss it I thought to myself as I began burying myself
underneath my fortitude of blankets. Seconds later there was a pounding at my door and my dad
came in to tell me that I was going to the zoo today. Extremely ecstatic I zipped my clothes on and
ran down the stairs to go wait in the car. Almost falling out of my seat with excitement the whole
ride there I would repeat each and every animal that I wanted to visit at the zoo until it drove my
parents crazy. My parents pulled up to the curb

My Grandfather Lessons
My Grandfather Lessons I remember when I was young I loved going fishing with my Grandfather

I know now that he stuck by this and that's why anyone that was important to him loved him for
these reasons. Those words stuck to me and will always stick to me for the rest of my life. As the
months went on me and my older brother took turns going with my grandfather it upset me at times
because I wasn't spending as much time as I wanted to with my grandfather but I learned to live it.
We never really argued about what day he would go or I would go. My mother would always make
me some lunch on those Saturday mornings I remember mine would consisted of peanut butter and
jelly with an apple and 2 cookies and a water bottle. I loved those days they made me feel relaxed
and good about being alive. As I got older so did my grandfather he started to have more pain in
more places, sick on unexpected days I never knew what sickness he had but I know it wasn't good.
There was some Saturday morning that he couldn't take us because of his sickness until one day he
just stopped taking us, later that month they told us he was sick in the hospital but that everything
was going to be fine I was relieved of that news I thought everything was going to be the way it
once was. Before I knew I didn't have a grandfather anymore that same month he died. We were all
devastated I couldn't believe it I didn't want to believe it. That week continued with people crying
and remembering all the good he did for people. As this was

Television And Its Effects On Children
Television is everywhere these days, not just in our living rooms but in bathrooms, kitchens, doctor
's offices, grocery stores, airplanes, and classrooms. We have access to TV virtually anywhere and as
American 's we are taking advantage of it. Adults aren 't the only ones watching TV; children today
are watching more TV than ever before. TV has even become known as "America 's baby–sitter."
(Krieg). Meaning that parents are now using the television as a way of entertaining their children
while they attempt to accomplish other things such as cooking and cleaning. Most American 's
would agree that children watch a lot of TV. It 's common to see a child sitting in front of the TV on
a Saturday morning with their Coco Pebbles watching their favorite superhero. This sounds
harmless enough. However, many parents and teachers across the country are worried about the
cartoons their children are watching. They feel that the cartoons have become too violent and are
having negative long–term effects on children. It is common to see young boys pretending to shoot
one another, while jumping on the couch and hiding in closets as a sort of make–believe fort. But
parents say that children are learning these behaviors from cartoons and imitating them. Others
however, disagree, they say that violence in cartoons does not effect children and that children need
this world of fantasy in their lives. They say that children would show these same behaviors
regardless of the content of the

Media Violence
Media Violence: Helping Youth Understand Death
We've all heard it before. Blame it on TV, or the movies. If a child bludgeons another child to death
with a wrench or shoots a classmate, it is the violent TV programs that they watch which are to
blame, not the parents or the supervisors who are supposed to be there to make sure their kids do the
right thing. How far is it true that the media is responsible for trivialising death and violence, thus
causing the children of America to go out on shooting rampages, or kids in Britain to murder
innocent toddlers?
First let us look at the way the media portrays death. Death has always been a taboo subject. People
do not usually sit around talking about death, especially to children. ... Show more content on

Maybe the boy had seen one too many cop shows, and he was not old enough to realise the
consequences of killing a person. The blame here was not put on the media, but on the
irresponsibility of the boy's uncle, who kept a loaded gun where the boy could easily gain access to
it. But the media could have played a part here as well, by desensitising death so that a six–year old
boy would think nothing of killing his classmate.
Another example of the trivialisation of death by the media would be how a man was shown killing
himself on 'live' TV during the Saturday morning cartoon time slot. Viewers in Los Angeles,
California, were shocked badly when the routine practice of interrupting TV programs to televise
police car chases took an ugly turn. The man who was being chased set himself and his dog on fire,
then shot himself in the head. And all this was broadcast 'live' to many homes in LA, where children
were watching their Saturday morning cartoons (Death in the mass media). As expected, this
incident aroused public outrage, geared towards the broadcasters. Questions about their discretion,
moral values and humanity were raised. Though it was not intentional, the media had committed a
serious error in judgement. But are they completely to be blamed? The reason why they broadcast
police chases 'live' was probably

My First Day Of Babysitting
My first day of babysitting wasn't my idea of a fun time. It totally changed my mind about getting
up close and personal with kids while playing any sort of game or doing any activity. I started
babysitting when i was 14 to make a little cash and it wasn't a big problem because i absolutely
loved little kids. I babysat for my moms friend, Sarah. I've known her since i was just a toddler, so i
grew up being very close to that family. Then she had a baby and i was so excited because i would
have a new buddy, i was hoping for a girl but that didn't happen. So she had a little boy named Ben.
He was adorable, and i have always loved little babies.. As he got a little older, Sarah needed a
weekend babysitter so she came and talked to my mom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More of the day went by, and it was getting chilly outside so we went in and i made Mac and Cheese
for dinner because that was Ben's Favorite food. After he ate, we sat down and watched some
cartoons and ate some popcorn. After he got tired of all the cartoons he wanted to do some puzzles
at the kitchen table, so i got a few puzzles out and we started doing them and we were having a
blast. He is a really smart little boy so he was really good at them. Here's when i started to not want
to babysit ever again. Were sitting there and he coughed and he cover his mouth with his hand while
his cheeks are all puffed out and looks at me for 5 seconds and i just said "Oh no" and puke flew out
all over me and it was so much puke and i almost threw up from the smell of it. So i took him to the
bathroom to put him in the shower and get new clothes for the both of us and there was still some
puke on the kitchen floor. So after we got all cleaned up, i went to clean it off the kitchen floor and
both of the cat's were eating the puke and so i'd pick them up and move them then they would run
right back and continue licking the puke. Not to long after i finally got all of the mess cleared up,

The Death Of A Dream
The Death of a Dream
I love my God, for he is the only one that comforts me when I sleep and walks with me in the day. I
can cry out to him without judgement and he will answer me even when I don't like the answer. I am
just a man with a dream. A dream to share my life with someone. To grow old and grey with
someone. I got married young to a woman who told me she was pregnant. She cheated on me and
left. The ethical dilemma, do I strike first and stand a better chance of getting my children or do I
wait and try to work things out with the woman that I dreamed of sharing the rest of my life.
Who am I? Where do my ethics come from? I grew up in a small rural community in the state of

I remember hearing the words "for the greater good": but, somehow that didn't mean that the
individual wasn't important.
The farmer that we rented the farm from had a son, his name was Randy. Randy and I became close
friends. We used to play in the gain bins behind his house. The bins were about twenty feet tall
twelve feet in diameter and about half full of corn. One Saturday morning Randy and I climbed up
the outside of the grain bin. Randy jumped in and sank to the bottom. I could not see him. I started
yelling his name. He did not answer. I climbed down the ladder and opened the hatch to the grain
bin. Corn blasted everywhere. Finally, he came rolling out. Gasping of for air, he looked right at me
and said. "Do you want to go to church with me this Sunday." I said sure.
Randy said we have to find his dad before the grain was ruined by the moisture. I told him we would
surely get in trouble. He said maybe, however, this is how my Dad feeds our family. This is money
and my dad says that we need every penny. We got on our bikes and tracked down Randy's Dad.
You could see he was mad. We got in the back of the truck and went back to the grain bins. Mr.
Weaver hooked up a grain auger to his tractor and we shoveled the corn into it. After we were done,
he looked at me and said thank you for saving my son. That is all that was said. I started going to
church with Randy and his parents and soon accepted Jesus as my Savior.

Children and Television Essay
As Americans we should be very concerned about the effect that television is having on our
children. Today's children watch far too much television. As a result, a number of horrific conditions
occur, which could have easily been prevented, if we as parents and caregivers simply would get off
of our lazy butts and just turn off the tube. The National Coalition for Children and Families states,
"By the time adolescents graduate from high school, they will have spent 15,000 hours watching
television, compared with 12,000 hours spent in the classroom." The influence that television is
having on America's children is having alarming results. Everyday we are seeing more and more
children with developmental delays, distorted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A concurrent study conducted by the Children's Hospital of Cincinnati and reported by ABC News
states "40 percent of 2–year–olds are watching a minimum of three hours of television a day." These
numbers are simply alarming. The report goes on further to state "That kids under 2 shouldn't be
watching TV at all and those between 2 and 5 should be strictly limited to two hours a day." We are
setting a pattern from an early age in these small children that will affect the rest of their lives.
Another concern is the fact that many of us are using our televisions as a live in babysitter. As an
example, every Saturday morning your child wakes up at 6:00 A.M. Since it is your day off you
want to sleep in. So you plop your child in front of the television with a bowl of cereal and the
Saturday morning cartoons and you go back to bed. This scenario happens in countless homes
across the country. But do you really know what your child is watching or what they are doing? But
sadly this doesn't just happen on Saturday morning. It happens in our homes every single day. It is
so much easier for us to let the television entertain our children then for us to do it ourselves.
When was the last time you drove down a

Video Games And The Video Game
I've been playing video games and watching various forms of animation for years. I started to play
video games on my Sega Genesis, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Phantasy Star. From then on, I
advanced in gaming platforms and experienced games from Nintendo since the Nintendo
Entertainment System (NES) and from Sony on the first PlayStation. I spent countless hours playing
video games. However, I also spent a fair amount of time watching animation. I'd wake up on
Saturday mornings to watch shows like Pokémon and Dragon Ball. Additionally, there was the
occasional marathon of Disney VHS tapes. Through video games, I was able to explore new realms
through virtual reality. In role–playing games (RPG's), I'd be able to take on the role of a protagonist
that would save different worlds and trek across lands teeming with adventure and evil to vanquish.
Similarly, these experiences were also found in the characters of the cartoons I watched. As a result,
I became inspired to create my own characters and even illustrate the ones I watched from those
Saturday morning cartoons. At the time, my room was decorated with multiple drawings and posters
of cartoons characters along with '90s gaming posters that displayed advertisements for the
Nintendo 64 console and Mortal Kombat games. It was there in that room, where I was able to cross
over to other worlds and experience journeys to distant lands. In a sense, my room was the
equivalent of Narnia's wardrobe. I was able to enjoy video

sides, wasn't to big ether just enough to fit 3 adults and the motor looked as if it was worn out. When
I was there I didn't understand why the fishes weren't biting, I was contemplating if the worms were

The Role of the Vietnam War on the 1960's
The Vietnam War played a huge role in the 1960's, over 50,000 people were killed, and the war
began from a dispute from two colonies. Vietnam came apart along with Korea by an agreement of
the north and the south. When John F Kennedy became president there were problems between
Soviet Union and the United States. Cold war was getting worse and worse; President Eisenhower
had to resolve the issues with berlin and Dictator Fidel Castro. These conflicts would eventually
lead to a cordial resolution. The progressive political organization did not last long they went about
a lot of things violently. In the 1960's television and music experienced many changes. Music
experienced new artists, different genres and exciting musical festivals. Television introduced
different genres that range from daytime talk shows to sitcoms that portrayed the average American
family. During this time period America improved in a lot of ways due to the music that people
listened to and the television shows that were aired. In the 1960's music had a lot of influences on
everyone not only adults but teens too. Starting from RnB music to blues to rock n roll to even folk
music it all had an impact on the people that listened to it. Rnb music around this time was thought
of as the heart of music it originated from different genres. It started to have more of a gospel sound
in the 60's with artists such as Sam Cooke, James Brown and Ray Charles. And as years passed a

Personal Narrative-Ball Is Life
Ball is Life
It was a nice summer morning, the birds were chirping, sun was rising and I was ready to play some
basketball. I was on an AAU basketball team along with 8 other guys my age. Our tournament was
right here held in West Fargo. We had a total of 3 games today. Two of the games went good, the
other one not so well. One of these games I will always remember because of my performance.
When I woke up this early Saturday morning I was so pumped for my games. For once I was the
first person ready for the day, that's a first. I had my lucky white leggings on under my blue Comets
shorts, along with my white jersey. I also had this black knee brace that protects my bad knee.

feet set, got the ball, shot it, swish! That shooting motion felt so good that game it was unbelievable.
This whole experience was just so exciting. The rush felt so amazing. Then the buzzer went off, we
won.
That game I put up 20 points. Coach Hodge once again pulled me over to the side. He was so hyped.
He told me "Goldade, that is how you do it. I want you to do that every game from now on". He
than gave me a side hug and I went to talk to my family and they all congratulated me and the team.
Later that day we played another game and I did really good, not as good though. After that day
when I got home I was proud of myself. I was still upset about losing that one game, but it was okay.

Influence Of Influence On The Upbringing And Rearing Of...
The word says, "Train up a child in the way they should go, and when he is old he will not depart
from it."
– Proverbs 22:6 New King James Version (NKJV)
In America today the rise of violence that is being committed by children is growing daily. The
pressure that is placed upon a parent to raise children in a certain demeanor has fallen to the waste
side, and every man, woman, and child is for themselves. Outside influences play a major role in the
upbringing and rearing of children no matter what age and time they were brought up in.
"Men, in a word, must necessarily be controlled either by a power within them or by a power
without them; either by the Word of God or by the strong arm of man; either by the Bible or by the
bayonet."
–Robert Winthrop, Speaker of the U. S. House
According to Webster's Dictionary, influence is defined as the capacity to have an effect on the
character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself. Meaning you
become what you see the most and you develop the language of what you hear the most. There are
many influences that impact the way children perceive life and themselves, from TV, imitation of
others (peer pressure), drugs, anger, mental disorders, and lack of parental guidance, just to name a
few. Children today are looking to themselves and other things outside of the home to guide them or
encourage them to be who they feel they are. With the growth of technology and its major impact on
the American family,

The Effects of Violence in Children Cartoons
Summary: The effects of violence in children's cartoons on their behavior with the conclusion that
violence on television harms children and that the media should show self–discipline in not airing

These shows tend to contain the same amount of violence as their videogame processors and are
much cheaper to produce (Rutenberg). Yet these Anime shows are getting the same TV ratings as
other less violent cartoons.
With all this being said there are still people out there who disagree with the notion that children's
cartoons are too violent. Some just simply argue that kids will be kids and that they will kick, hit
and yell karate moves whether they watch TV or not (Walsh). Others such as Gerard Jones author of
"Killing Monsters: Why Children need Fantasy, Super Heroes and Make–Believe Violence," state
that these cartoons actually help children (Rimensnyder). Jones states that these cartoons allow
children to become something that they can't be in everyday life, to leave the real world behind for a
while to satisfy their own curiosity. Children can project themselves onto these superheroes and this
lets them become powerful for a few minuets in a world that gives no power to children
(Rimensnyder). Jones also goes on to say that the reason why society is so against these violent
cartoons is because we think it will eliminate real life violence (Rimensnyder). Some say that these
cartoons give children a cathartic outlet to let out pent up aggression and fears. On the other hand
others say that the TV violence is the cause of the pent up aggression to begin

The Topic Of Advertising And How It Affects Young Children
This research argument paper presents findings on the topic of advertising and how it affects young
children. Advertising of all types, including television commercials are large part of everyday life.
Through commercials and other advertising, agencies and companies introduce their product or
services to people of all ages, including young children. Many people do not realize these
advertisements truly have a profound effect on the development of young children. Advertisers
understand that reaching children through these advertisements will increase their profits
dramatically and do so without regard to the well–being of the child. The effects of advertisements,
such as magazines and billboards, online advertisements and television ... Show more content on

Advertisements may be in the form of a television commercial, a printed ad in a magazine, signs and
billboards or commercials on television and advertisements on the internet. Advertisements are seen
in the home; in stores and even in the schools and do not always promote the best of things. Many
online websites have increased advertising directed at children. Print advertisements, online
advertisements and television commercials can have an adverse effect on children's behavior and
development through the exposure to negative options, as well as children having the need to
possess material things they see in the advertisements. Children are negatively affected by
advertisements because of the inability to understand the reason and the inclusion of violence and
unhealthy food options.
Children's Understanding of Advertisements
Advertisements and commercials are geared towards children now more than ever and the
promoters of the products express exactly what the children want to hear. Although young children
do not understand the meaning of commercials and advertising, these advertisements are very
persuasive and encourage children to seek out the product, whether good or bad, that is being
advertised. Young children are unable to differentiate information that is portrayed to them that may
be biased, like information in a commercial on

In order to understand the depths of this criminal offense, you must first realize how I was put into

My Favorite Gift
I vividly recall asking my mother why her waistline was steadily expanding. She took my hand,
placed it on her stomach, and said, "Meet your baby sister!" I was six years old and family life had
always been focused on me and my needs. Suddenly, I felt uncertain about my future. How would
my life change? Would my new sister and I like each other? My father assured me that I would be a
kind, loving brother, but I was not so sure! Hours after Lauren's birth, on a snowy February day, my
dad took me to the hospital to meet her. I insisted on wearing my souvenir Burger King crown
because I liked it, and thought that she'd like it, too! Amid all the fanfare and excitement, somehow
there was a special gift from Lauren to me: a shiny red fire truck! As I opened my gift, I wondered
how she could have known that trucks were among my favorite toys (although I didn't ponder that

was mostly that of helpful assistant, who dutifully gave her a bottle or held her. After I had been
assisting with her physical care for some time, I volunteered more meaningful contributions, such as
encouraging her to crawl and walk. To my surprise, I secretly started to enjoy my new role. I was
getting unexpected pleasure from my increasing responsibilities and from my rising family status.

Mandala Research Paper
In my life there are very many things that are important to me. In order to make those things more
apparent I drew things to represent them on a mandala. A mandala is a picture drawn inside of a
circle to represent important things in one's life. Thankfully I had many things to place on it.
The Planetary symbols that circle the inner edge of my mandala are a reference to my favorite show
from my childhood, ''Sailor Moon''. It was a long–running T.V. show about girls who were
princesses from different planets and came to Earth to stop the forces of evil. The symbols, in
clockwise order, represent Sailor Mercury, Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Saturn,
Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto. The reason why I put ... Show more content on

Before I knew how to read, I would sit and watch the show on early Saturday mornings. According
to my mother, it was the very first show that I watched. I was also a very big fan of the video games
because the games were among the very first that I played. Lastly, the card game was also very
important to me because it taught me how important patience and responsibility was. The reason I
put the logo on my mandala is very similar to the reason I put the planetary symbols, I used to
practice drawing Pokémon to practice drawing different textures and shapes.
The BBC and Cartoon Network logos were put on my mandala for the same reason, they both have
many of my favorite shows. Because I am a big fan of animation, I spend a lot of time watching
Cartoon Network. BBC has a some shows that I like to binge watch, such as Top Gear and Star

The orange square with a white symbol inside of it is the Crunchyroll logo. Crunchyroll is an online

reason why I have gotten into anime, and without it, I would have discovered my favorite anime

Stereotypes In Cartoons
Various types of cartoons await for the children when they turn on the television. Cartoons have
been a part of cinema history since the 1800s. Television, a form of media invented during the
1920s, has the ability to greatly impact the thinking of the children. The overwhelming influence of
television on children is a threat to the society. According to the Statistic Brain, the average
American youth watches television for 1,200 hours per year. Too much viewing of television can
have negative effects on children's behavior. One of the most negative sides is that animated
cartoons in television greatly determines a child's behavior toward gender roles. Yet, many
television programs for children consolidate gender stereotypes intensively. The children learn about
the world when at their early age. When they're exposed to stereotypical cartoons on television at an
early age, they tend to believe that what they see in the cartoons are real. But, the truth is most of the
information portrayed in cartoons are stereotypical and fantasy. However, at an early age, children
fail to understand the difference between reality and fantasy. As a result, they shape their thoughts
about the society based on what they see in cartoons on television. Depiction of sex/gender role
stereotypes seen by children on television is potentially threatening to children because they define
what it means to be male and female. Children are exposed to many Disney animated movies and
cartoons that promote

Personal Narrative: A Day Before Hurricane Katrina
Ten years ago on the Saturday before Hurricane Katrina, I was a five year who had just started a
new school and was looking forward to my Saturday morning cartoons. When I woke up on that
Saturday morning; however, I quickly found out that watching Saturday morning cartoons was not
going to be on the agenda for the day. My parents were running around frantically trying to board
our house and get everything from outside picked up. I later found out that we would be packing the
car and my dad, mom, six month old baby sister and I would be traveling to Houston, Texas. Before
leaving New Orleans for what we thought would be a weekend getaway, my mom searched and

stayed in the car. After about thirty minutes my mom returned to the car crying. She then explained
to my dad that the hotel had over booked their rooms and gave our room away. When I saw my
Mom crying, I started to wonder what was going on. At the age of five, I could not understand why
all the hotel rooms were occupied and there were none available for us to stay in. I immediately
became scared because I could see the look of fear on my parents' faces and I knew that they weren't
sure what to do. It was now nine o'clock at night and my parents and myself were tired, and we
didn't know what to do next. My parents then decided that the best thing for us to do is to drive
around Houston and hope we could find an available room. We finally found a room at the Marriott

The Effects Of Television Violence On Children
Television has become one of the most, if not the most, used form of entertainment for all ages.
Every TV show has some kind of age limit whether it's rated G or R, it's not always easy for parents
to moderate what their children are watching. Young children are very moldable, not only by the
people around them, but what is on TV. I have conducted an experiment to see how much violence
and aggression are in everyday television shows that children are likely to watch. I have watched
three different half hour TV shows, tallying the amount of aggressive, and prosocial behaviors that
occur on the shows. The first show watched was a typical Saturday morning TV show, SpongeBob.
The second show watched is a prosocial TV program, Sesame Street. The third show watched is an
adult cartoon, Family Guy, which is meant for adults but a high population of children are the
audience. The independent variable of this experiment is the different levels of each show's
aggression or prosocial behaviors. The dependent variable is the aggression or prosocial level of the
TV show, since I have no child to study for this project. This experiment very much relates to
another experiment called the Bobo Doll experiment. Children in the experiment are from ages 3–6
are either shown an aggressive video of the Bobo doll beaten, or a video with nothing aggressive.
The results showed that the majority of children who were shown the aggression video imitated the
same actions and more to the Bobo doll. The

Television Violence
On April 20, 1999, a tragic event took place in an environment where children should feel safe. At
Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, twelve students and one teacher were tragically
gunned down by two boys, one seventeen years old, and one eighteen years old. Recently in
Michigan, a first grader brought a gun to school and shot and killed a fellow classmate.
These tragedies can be seen as a result of many different factors, such as violence in the home,
access to deadly weapons, and extreme anger towards society. A main reason for these school
tragedies is the violence children view every day on television.
The amount of violence that children see on television is overwhelming. According to Mortimer ...

Also, the violent acts they see are not always explicit or graphic. Most of the time the images are
shown without close up images of blood and gore, the images which actually depict violence.
In most of the violent acts on television no punishment is shown. The portrayal of violence is often
seen as a reward, a scene where killing the "bad guys" to save the princess is seen as a good thing. In
these situations the perpetrator of the violent act is the hero. When violence is presented without a
punishment, children are likely to learn that violence is a successful way to handle a situation.
Not all television shows depict violence though. There are a number of excellent educational
programs that have been long running without violence, such as Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Sesame
Street, and 1,2,3 Contact. These shows promote cooperation and learning, instead of violence.
However, these programs are often not as entertaining to children, especially when violent programs
are on the air.
I found a research paper that dealt with violent television shows' impact on children. This paper
pointed out the top seven problems in the 1940s compared to the 1990s. The top seven problems

My Mentorship Experience
"Only a few more blocks to go," I vividly remember telling my friend Keith and Robert at the time.
It was a breezy, sunny Saturday morning in October and we were walking from block to block
picking up any trash in sight. Giving up a Saturday morning if watching the cartoon to help keep the
neighborhood as clean as possible felt good. There was no other group of young men I would rather
spend my time with. When I was in 6th grade my counselor, mentor, and basketball coach at the
time, Roshaun Bowens, started a mentorship program in the school by the name of Young Men's
Group (YMG). YMG was a mentorship group that founded in order to teach life values to a group of
inner–city kids at the school, who may otherwise not receive those valuable lessons elsewhere. My
time spent in YMG was incredible, and giving up a couple of Saturdays to clean up the

Cartoon Violence, Has it gone too Far
Aggression. Killing. Revenge. Sound like the latest Scream movie or Keanu Reeves thriller? You
may be surprised to hear that this describes the average Saturday morning cartoon. One of the most
surprising facts is that the level of violence during Saturday morning cartoons is higher than the
level of violence during prime time. There are 3 to 5 violent acts per hour in prime time, versus 20
to 25 acts per hour on Saturday morning (Gerbner,1). Violence on television in general is damaging
to society. But the specific targeting of the younger population through the use of cartoons to show

This question has been pondered for years now, but little is being done to help correct the frequency
of violence in the media.
Secondly, violence in cartoons has come to a point where it is affecting the way children live their
lives; they are becoming more hostile. Any person watching a single violent television program can
become more aggressive; in children, this phenomenon is also applicable. In reality, children are
more affected by television than the average adult. Children who watch violent television
programming, especially programming in which the violence or aggression is realistic, frequent
and/or unpunished tend to become more violent and aggressive, immediately after the program
and/or much later, sometimes even years later (Parenthood Web). When children watch Might
Morphin Power Rangers, a program that is mostly occupied with solving their problems with their
fists rather than your words, they don't see the consequences. In fact the characters in these shows,
like the Power Rangers, are often praised and not punished for being violent. Through a child's eyes

The Death Of Cartoon Television Tv Show
As a long time fan of classic, nostalgia–filled cartoons of the 80's, 90's and early 2000's it's sad to
say the days of Saturday–morning cartoons have been laid to rest. Or rather abruptly terminated
would be a better way to put it. The death of cartoon tv TV show blocks has been tucked away in the
box of many young children (mainly of the male demographic) right next to infrared peripherals,
and chewed up and worn action figures that accommodated them. Though unlike many dying forms
of media, the influence of Saturday–morning cartoons still continues. First things first, modern
cartoons have difficulty embodying the same type of in–depth, adult–themed, bro–mantic
adventures that older cartoons thrived off of. Take for example the original Transformers series. A
group of ultra intelligent, sentient robots escape their crippling homeworld of Cybertron in order to
seek out the much–needed (hyphenate to words that form an adjectiveresource of Energon. Upon
finding Earth, our heroes the Autobots are attacked by the evil Decepticons only to crash land and
wake up thousands of years later in the year 1984. Thus series continues on with Megatron trying to
harvest the Earth for its resources and Optimus Prime and his band of allied companions foiling his
every attempt. The next 4 four (spell out numbers ten and under) seasons present the viewers with
the overarching theme of teamwork and friendship. Granted, it did this very well and the show is

I Am At The Jacksonville Zoo And Gardens
Four years old is by far one of the most interesting points of existence in the human lifetime. By
four years into life, most have hopefully completed their transition out of infancy and toddlerhood
and are now on their way to becoming fully functioning children. Despite this sudden growth in
cognitive ability, however, most memories from this time period – in my personal experience – are
foggy and difficult to recall. As a result, my only methods of journeying back to this era of my life
are through the exploration of large, dust–covered photo albums tucked away in closets or attics.
One of the relics of this age, carefully preserved behind a thin pocket of plastic and surrounded by
images of birthday parties long forgotten, is a picture of me taken by my mother in the late summer
of 2004. The date on the photo reads "8/10/04" in orange lettering in the lower right corner. I had
just turned four a couple of months prior. I am at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, taken there by
my mother and my aunt, yet they stand out of frame, my existence being the sole focal point of the
image. My monochrome uniform of choice that day consisted of a pair of worn cargo shorts, their
pale blue color matching that of my shirt. A slightly greener baseball cap rests ill fittingly on the top
of my head, and I am in fact surprised that the breeze hadn't yet blown it from its precarious position
and into the face of some unfortunate bystander. My eyes don't meet the camera. Instead, they gaze

A Brief Note On The Crimes Of The Past
Atoning for the crimes of the past
Social culture, from what we know, has an impact on the way people view the world around us, and
one of the most influential we see currently is the media. As kids grow up and develop, they are
exposed to a lot of media from Nickelodeon to Cartoon Network, to one of the most impactful,
Disney Channel. When it comes to the media we know that over the course of time things can be
skewed to look a certain way and they typically may have subliminal messages. So what message
are we showing our children? When it comes to Disney and their iconic princesses, we know that
they typically tend to all look the same in appearance. From Cinderella to Rapunzel, they all tend to
have the same features. Straight, blonde hair and pale skin. Some concerns came with this as people
started to notice these main features when it came to the disney princesses. This led to Disney
including a new princess, the famous Tiana, first of her kind. However, this still begs the question as
to whether or not the new African American Disney princess repairs the damage done by Disney
over the course of time in regard to the perpetuation of racial stereotypes? Although creating Tiana
is a positive step towards improvement, her creation still fails to repair the damage fostered by the
perpetual stereotypes.

The Effects Television Violence Has on Children Essay
The Effects Television Violence Has on Children
Television has both positive and negative effects on children between the ages of two and five.
Some research shows that violence in the media can be linked to aggressive behavior in children.
Though, some researchers disagree with this statement and believe that there are other factors,
besides television, which cause children to become violent. The following essay will reflect both
sides of this argument.
Violent television shows lead to violence in children between the ages of two and five. A study
conducted by Albert Bandura concludes that violence in the media can lead to aggressive behavior.

Many usually sit their child in front of the television and go about their business of cleaning, paying
bills or other things. Parents need to be knowledgeable on the types of violence shown on television
especially that which is seen in cartoons. For example, the cartoon "Power Rangers" has much
aggressive behavior that parents can overlook. When exposed to this show, children between the
ages of two and five were said to imitate the actions of the characters towards one another. Research
shows that less than five percent of shows have a non–violent subject matter ("Children"). Parents
need to take time out of their day and sit down with their child to observe what they are watching on
television. Parents should also explain the consequences of violent behavior, since television rarely
does this. Aggressive behavior shown on television, particularly in cartoons, leads to violent
behavior in children. There are other factors, other than television, that can lead to aggressive
behavior in children. Research conducted by Guy Cumberbatch says that, in some cases, noise can
cause children to act violent. Other research shows that the increase in murders in the United States
is due to an increase in population. Japan has very violent television, though, has little "real–life"

them, are often equated with pleasure and worth. Yet numerous researchers have put much time into
discovering why children are so attached by the television and the action that takes place within it.
They prove that it is definitely a major source of violent behavior in children. Their research proves
time and time again that aggression and television viewing do go hand in hand. The truth about
television violence and children has been shown. Many people and critics try to ignore it and hope
that it will go away. Others do not even seem to care and try to attack these ideas. However, the facts
are undeniable and all the results point to one conclusion: Television violence causes children to be
violent and the effects can be life–long. The effects of the television are first visible even at the most
basic level of life, children and adolescents. The modern–day extent of viewing by humans,
especially Americans, is astronomical. Children begin to watch television at very early ages, often
when they are newborns. At this time they are obviously not able to follow along or be influenced

Then I sadly realized that I would not have the opportunity to see her again until

Personal Narrative: Marley And Me
It all started on a sunny but crisp Saturday in December (the weekend after Christmas) with morning
cartoons along with eggs, bacon, and toast. I was trying to talk my family into doing something fun,
anything fun. We went down the list of choices from bowling to fourwheeling to shopping and
finally chose to go to the movies. By the time we were all ready it was about 12:30 and we all
hopped in the car to go.
On the way, we talked about the movies that we would like to see which included Marley and Me,
Bedtime Stories and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I wanted to see Bedtime Stories (Keep
in mind I was 6), but my family all wanted to see Marley and Me which I thought would be an
animated movie, something close to Martha Speaks. We got

Essay On Violence In Television

  • 1. Essay on Violence in Television When families sit down to watch television, they expect to watch family type of shows. Family type shows meaning rated PG or PG13, sitcoms and movies that do not include weapons, killing, foul language, and non–socially accepted actions. When children killing, they start to believe that it is accepted. Do children think that killing and hurting others and themselves have little meaning to the real life, children can become traumatized. Most killers or violators of the law blame their behavior on the media, and the way that television portrays violators. Longitudinal studies tracking viewing habits and behavior patterns of a single individual found that 8–year–old boys, who viewed the most violent programs growing up, were the most likely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the National Television Violence Study, the context in which violence is portrayed is as important to its impact as the amount of violence. The study concluded that 66% of children's programming had violence. Of the shows with violent content three–quarters demonstrated unpunished violence and when violence occurred 58% of the time, victims were not shown experiencing pain. That makes the children think that violence is just like riding a bike, simple as that (NTVS, 1–2). Parents try not to let their children watch shows that they would watch due to the fact that there is a lot of violence that occurs. When parents sit down and watch the cartoons that their children are watching, they can notice that the violence is incredibly higher. The level of violence during Saturday morning cartoons is higher than the level of violence during prime time. There are 3 to 5 violent acts per hour in prime time, versus the 20–25 acts per hour on Saturday morning. Media violence is especially damaging to young children (under age 8) because they cannot easily tell the difference between real life and fantasy. Violent images on television and in movies may seem real to young children. Viewing violent images can traumatize innocent children (NTVS, 1–2). There is a strategy to help the children understand that what they are watching is not educational. You can tell your child that you are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Personal Narrative Such a peaceful Saturday morning I thought to myself as I lay in a daze on my bed. Contemplating weather or not it's worth it to crawl out of my bed and watch the early morning cartoons. My friends at school always seem to fill me in when I miss it I thought to myself as I began burying myself underneath my fortitude of blankets. Seconds later there was a pounding at my door and my dad came in to tell me that I was going to the zoo today. Extremely ecstatic I zipped my clothes on and ran down the stairs to go wait in the car. Almost falling out of my seat with excitement the whole ride there I would repeat each and every animal that I wanted to visit at the zoo until it drove my parents crazy. It was one of the most exciting things I did as a kid because I felt like I was bonding with my grandfather. He was always fun to be around with he made jokes, played around, and taught me life lessons. Reeling in fishes was in accomplishment for me and my grandfather even if it was just one we found it as if we did something great together. I remember sitting in the boat with him one Saturday morning as we were awaiting to catch a fish the weather was chilly 55 degrees as I recall. I know now that he stuck by this and that's why anyone that was important to him loved him for these reasons. Those words stuck to me and will always stick to me for the rest of my life. As the months went on me and my older brother took turns going with my grandfather it upset me at times because I wasn't spending as much time as I wanted to with my grandfather but I learned to live it. We never really argued about what day he would go or I would go. My mother would always make me some lunch on those Saturday mornings I remember mine would consisted of peanut butter and jelly with an apple and 2 cookies and a water bottle. I loved those days they made me feel relaxed and good about being alive. As I got older so did my grandfather he started to have more pain in more places, sick on unexpected days I never knew what sickness he had but I know it wasn't good. There was some Saturday morning that he couldn't take us because of his sickness until one day he just stopped taking us, later that month they told us he was sick in the hospital but that everything was going to be fine I was relieved of that news I thought everything was going to be the way it once was. Before I knew I didn't have a grandfather anymore that same month he died. We were all devastated I couldn't believe it I didn't want to believe it. • 13. Television And Its Effects On Children Television is everywhere these days, not just in our living rooms but in bathrooms, kitchens, doctor 's offices, grocery stores, airplanes, and classrooms. We have access to TV virtually anywhere and as American 's we are taking advantage of it. Adults aren 't the only ones watching TV; children today are watching more TV than ever before. TV has even become known as "America 's baby–sitter." (Krieg). Meaning that parents are now using the television as a way of entertaining their children while they attempt to accomplish other things such as cooking and cleaning. Most American 's would agree that children watch a lot of TV. It 's common to see a child sitting in front of the TV on a Saturday morning with their Coco Pebbles watching their favorite superhero. This sounds harmless enough. However, many parents and teachers across the country are worried about the cartoons their children are watching. They feel that the cartoons have become too violent and are having negative long–term effects on children. It is common to see young boys pretending to shoot one another, while jumping on the couch and hiding in closets as a sort of make–believe fort. But parents say that children are learning these behaviors from cartoons and imitating them. Others however, disagree, they say that violence in cartoons does not effect children and that children need this world of fantasy in their lives. They say that children would show these same behaviors regardless of the content of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Media Violence Media Violence: Helping Youth Understand Death We've all heard it before. Blame it on TV, or the movies. If a child bludgeons another child to death with a wrench or shoots a classmate, it is the violent TV programs that they watch which are to blame, not the parents or the supervisors who are supposed to be there to make sure their kids do the right thing. How far is it true that the media is responsible for trivialising death and violence, thus causing the children of America to go out on shooting rampages, or kids in Britain to murder innocent toddlers? First let us look at the way the media portrays death. Death has always been a taboo subject. People do not usually sit around talking about death, especially to children. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Maybe the boy had seen one too many cop shows, and he was not old enough to realise the consequences of killing a person. The blame here was not put on the media, but on the irresponsibility of the boy's uncle, who kept a loaded gun where the boy could easily gain access to it. But the media could have played a part here as well, by desensitising death so that a six–year old boy would think nothing of killing his classmate. Another example of the trivialisation of death by the media would be how a man was shown killing himself on 'live' TV during the Saturday morning cartoon time slot. Viewers in Los Angeles, California, were shocked badly when the routine practice of interrupting TV programs to televise police car chases took an ugly turn. The man who was being chased set himself and his dog on fire, then shot himself in the head. And all this was broadcast 'live' to many homes in LA, where children were watching their Saturday morning cartoons (Death in the mass media). As expected, this incident aroused public outrage, geared towards the broadcasters. Questions about their discretion, moral values and humanity were raised. Though it was not intentional, the media had committed a serious error in judgement. But are they completely to be blamed? The reason why they broadcast police chases 'live' was probably ... • 21. My First Day Of Babysitting My first day of babysitting wasn't my idea of a fun time. It totally changed my mind about getting up close and personal with kids while playing any sort of game or doing any activity. I started babysitting when i was 14 to make a little cash and it wasn't a big problem because i absolutely loved little kids. I babysat for my moms friend, Sarah. I've known her since i was just a toddler, so i grew up being very close to that family. Then she had a baby and i was so excited because i would have a new buddy, i was hoping for a girl but that didn't happen. So she had a little boy named Ben. After he ate, we sat down and watched some cartoons and ate some popcorn. After he got tired of all the cartoons he wanted to do some puzzles at the kitchen table, so i got a few puzzles out and we started doing them and we were having a blast. He is a really smart little boy so he was really good at them. Here's when i started to not want to babysit ever again. Were sitting there and he coughed and he cover his mouth with his hand while his cheeks are all puffed out and looks at me for 5 seconds and i just said "Oh no" and puke flew out all over me and it was so much puke and i almost threw up from the smell of it. So i took him to the bathroom to put him in the shower and get new clothes for the both of us and there was still some puke on the kitchen floor. So after we got all cleaned up, i went to clean it off the kitchen floor and both of the cat's were eating the puke and so i'd pick them up and move them then they would run right back and continue licking the puke. I can cry out to him without judgement and he will answer me even when I don't like the answer. I am just a man with a dream. A dream to share my life with someone. To grow old and grey with someone. I got married young to a woman who told me she was pregnant. She cheated on me and left. The ethical dilemma, do I strike first and stand a better chance of getting my children or do I wait and try to work things out with the woman that I dreamed of sharing the rest of my life. Who am I? I remember hearing the words "for the greater good": but, somehow that didn't mean that the individual wasn't important. The farmer that we rented the farm from had a son, his name was Randy. Randy and I became close friends. We used to play in the gain bins behind his house. The bins were about twenty feet tall twelve feet in diameter and about half full of corn. One Saturday morning Randy and I climbed up the outside of the grain bin. Randy jumped in and sank to the bottom. I could not see him. I started yelling his name. He did not answer. I climbed down the ladder and opened the hatch to the grain bin. Corn blasted everywhere. Finally, he came rolling out. Gasping of for air, he looked right at me and said. "Do you want to go to church with me this Sunday." I said sure. Randy said we have to find his dad before the grain was ruined by the moisture. I told him we would surely get in trouble. He said maybe, however, this is how my Dad feeds our family. This is money and my dad says that we need every penny. We got on our bikes and tracked down Randy's Dad. You could see he was mad. We got in the back of the truck and went back to the grain bins. Mr. Weaver hooked up a grain auger to his tractor and we shoveled the corn into it. After we were done, he looked at me and said thank you for saving my son. That is all that was said. I started going to church with Randy and his parents and soon accepted Jesus as my Savior. • 29. Children and Television Essay As Americans we should be very concerned about the effect that television is having on our children. Today's children watch far too much television. As a result, a number of horrific conditions occur, which could have easily been prevented, if we as parents and caregivers simply would get off of our lazy butts and just turn off the tube. The National Coalition for Children and Families states, "By the time adolescents graduate from high school, they will have spent 15,000 hours watching television, compared with 12,000 hours spent in the classroom." The influence that television is having on America's children is having alarming results. Everyday we are seeing more and more children with developmental delays, distorted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A concurrent study conducted by the Children's Hospital of Cincinnati and reported by ABC News states "40 percent of 2–year–olds are watching a minimum of three hours of television a day." These numbers are simply alarming. The report goes on further to state "That kids under 2 shouldn't be watching TV at all and those between 2 and 5 should be strictly limited to two hours a day." We are setting a pattern from an early age in these small children that will affect the rest of their lives. Another concern is the fact that many of us are using our televisions as a live in babysitter. As an example, every Saturday morning your child wakes up at 6:00 A.M. Since it is your day off you want to sleep in. So you plop your child in front of the television with a bowl of cereal and the Saturday morning cartoons and you go back to bed. This scenario happens in countless homes across the country. But do you really know what your child is watching or what they are doing? But sadly this doesn't just happen on Saturday morning. It happens in our homes every single day. It is so much easier for us to let the television entertain our children then for us to do it ourselves. When was the last time you drove down a ... I started to play video games on my Sega Genesis, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Phantasy Star. From then on, I advanced in gaming platforms and experienced games from Nintendo since the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and from Sony on the first PlayStation. I spent countless hours playing video games. However, I also spent a fair amount of time watching animation. I'd wake up on Saturday mornings to watch shows like Pokémon and Dragon Ball. Additionally, there was the occasional marathon of Disney VHS tapes. Through video games, I was able to explore new realms through virtual reality. In role–playing games (RPG's), I'd be able to take on the role of a protagonist that would save different worlds and trek across lands teeming with adventure and evil to vanquish. Similarly, these experiences were also found in the characters of the cartoons I watched. As a result, I became inspired to create my own characters and even illustrate the ones I watched from those Saturday morning cartoons. At the time, my room was decorated with multiple drawings and posters of cartoons characters along with '90s gaming posters that displayed advertisements for the Nintendo 64 console and Mortal Kombat games. It was there in that room, where I was able to cross over to other worlds and experience journeys to distant lands. In a sense, my room was the equivalent of Narnia's wardrobe. • 37. My Experience With My Grandfather My Grandfather's Lessons I remember when I was young, I loved fishing with my Grandfather because he was an amazing man who always cared for his family. It was one of the most exciting things I did as a kid because I felt like I was bonding with my grandfather. He was always fun to be around when he made jokes, played around, and taught me life lessons. Reeling in fishes was an accomplishment for me and my grandfather even if it was just one, we found it as if we did something great together. I remember sitting in the boat with him one Saturday morning as we were waiting to catch a fish. The weather was chilly 55 degrees as I recall. He was wearing his same old fishing gear [black rain boots with old 49ers hat and a white tee shirt with dark blue pants]. The sun was barely rising and I felt amazing, the scenery was beautiful I could see the orange/redness light of the sun rising. The boat was an old boat, but I could tell because of the green fading away on both sides, wasn't to big ether just enough to fit 3 adults and the motor looked as if it was worn out. When I was there I didn't understand why the fishes weren't biting, I was contemplating if the worms were good. As the time passed me and my grandfather didn't say much, I felt odd by it because we usually spoke, but this time I could feel it was different. I could not understand why he was so quiet, and as I was about to speak my grandfather told me" Bryan as you get older there's morals you must stick with", I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Vietnam came apart along with Korea by an agreement of the north and the south. When John F Kennedy became president there were problems between Soviet Union and the United States. Cold war was getting worse and worse; President Eisenhower had to resolve the issues with berlin and Dictator Fidel Castro. These conflicts would eventually lead to a cordial resolution. The progressive political organization did not last long they went about a lot of things violently. In the 1960's television and music experienced many changes. Music experienced new artists, different genres and exciting musical festivals. Television introduced different genres that range from daytime talk shows to sitcoms that portrayed the average American family. During this time period America improved in a lot of ways due to the music that people listened to and the television shows that were aired. In the 1960's music had a lot of influences on everyone not only adults but teens too. Starting from RnB music to blues to rock n roll to even folk music it all had an impact on the people that listened to it. Rnb music around this time was thought of as the heart of music it originated from different genres. It started to have more of a gospel sound in the 60's with artists such as Sam Cooke, James Brown and Ray Charles. And as years passed a new style of music came about and it ... I was on an AAU basketball team along with 8 other guys my age. Our tournament was right here held in West Fargo. We had a total of 3 games today. Two of the games went good, the other one not so well. One of these games I will always remember because of my performance. When I woke up this early Saturday morning I was so pumped for my games. For once I was the first person ready for the day, that's a first. I had my lucky white leggings on under my blue Comets shorts, along with my white jersey. I also had this black knee brace that protects my bad knee. Anyways, once we got into the car we went to pick up my teammate Coby. Right after we got him we drove to the gym where my game was at. Coach Hodge once again pulled me over to the side. He was so hyped. He told me "Goldade, that is how you do it. I want you to do that every game from now on". He than gave me a side hug and I went to talk to my family and they all congratulated me and the team. Later that day we played another game and I did really good, not as good though. The word says, "Train up a child in the way they should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." – Proverbs 22:6 New King James Version (NKJV) In America today the rise of violence that is being committed by children is growing daily. The pressure that is placed upon a parent to raise children in a certain demeanor has fallen to the waste side, and every man, woman, and child is for themselves. Outside influences play a major role in the upbringing and rearing of children no matter what age and time they were brought up in. "Men, in a word, must necessarily be controlled either by a power within them or by a power without them; either by the Word of God or by the strong arm of man; either by the Bible or by the bayonet." –Robert Winthrop, Speaker of the U. S. House According to Webster's Dictionary, influence is defined as the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself. Meaning you become what you see the most and you develop the language of what you hear the most. There are many influences that impact the way children perceive life and themselves, from TV, imitation of others (peer pressure), drugs, anger, mental disorders, and lack of parental guidance, just to name a few. Children today are looking to themselves and other things outside of the home to guide them or encourage them to be who they feel they are. We have access to TV virtually anywhere and as American's we are taking advantaged of it. Adults aren't the only ones watching TV; children today are watching more TV than ever before. Yet these Anime shows are getting the same TV ratings as other less violent cartoons. With all this being said there are still people out there who disagree with the notion that children's cartoons are too violent. Some just simply argue that kids will be kids and that they will kick, hit and yell karate moves whether they watch TV or not (Walsh). Others such as Gerard Jones author of "Killing Monsters: Why Children need Fantasy, Super Heroes and Make–Believe Violence," state that these cartoons actually help children (Rimensnyder). Jones states that these cartoons allow children to become something that they can't be in everyday life, to leave the real world behind for a while to satisfy their own curiosity. Children can project themselves onto these superheroes and this lets them become powerful for a few minuets in a world that gives no power to children (Rimensnyder). Jones also goes on to say that the reason why society is so against these violent cartoons is because we think it will eliminate real life violence (Rimensnyder). Some say that these cartoons give children a cathartic outlet to let out pent up aggression and fears. My father assured me that I would be a kind, loving brother, but I was not so sure! Hours after Lauren's birth, on a snowy February day, my dad took me to the hospital to meet her. I insisted on wearing my souvenir Burger King crown because I liked it, and thought that she'd like it, too! Amid all the fanfare and excitement, somehow there was a special gift from Lauren to me: a shiny red fire truck! Television, a form of media invented during the 1920s, has the ability to greatly impact the thinking of the children. The overwhelming influence of television on children is a threat to the society. According to the Statistic Brain, the average American youth watches television for 1,200 hours per year. Too much viewing of television can have negative effects on children's behavior. One of the most negative sides is that animated cartoons in television greatly determines a child's behavior toward gender roles. Yet, many television programs for children consolidate gender stereotypes intensively. The children learn about the world when at their early age. When they're exposed to stereotypical cartoons on television at an early age, they tend to believe that what they see in the cartoons are real. But, the truth is most of the information portrayed in cartoons are stereotypical and fantasy. However, at an early age, children fail to understand the difference between reality and fantasy. As a result, they shape their thoughts about the society based on what they see in cartoons on television. The third show watched is an adult cartoon, Family Guy, which is meant for adults but a high population of children are the audience. At Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, twelve students and one teacher were tragically gunned down by two boys, one seventeen years old, and one eighteen years old. Recently in Michigan, a first grader brought a gun to school and shot and killed a fellow classmate. These tragedies can be seen as a result of many different factors, such as violence in the home, access to deadly weapons, and extreme anger towards society. A main reason for these school tragedies is the violence children view every day on television. The amount of violence that children see on television is overwhelming. According to Mortimer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, the violent acts they see are not always explicit or graphic. Most of the time the images are shown without close up images of blood and gore, the images which actually depict violence. In most of the violent acts on television no punishment is shown. The portrayal of violence is often seen as a reward, a scene where killing the "bad guys" to save the princess is seen as a good thing. In these situations the perpetrator of the violent act is the hero. When violence is presented without a punishment, children are likely to learn that violence is a successful way to handle a situation. Not all television shows depict violence though. There are a number of excellent educational programs that have been long running without violence, such as Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Sesame Street, and 1,2,3 Contact. As a result, my only methods of journeying back to this era of my life are through the exploration of large, dust–covered photo albums tucked away in closets or attics. One of the relics of this age, carefully preserved behind a thin pocket of plastic and surrounded by images of birthday parties long forgotten, is a picture of me taken by my mother in the late summer of 2004. The date on the photo reads "8/10/04" in orange lettering in the lower right corner. I had just turned four a couple of months prior. I am at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, taken there by my mother and my aunt, yet they stand out of frame, my existence being the sole focal point of the image. My monochrome uniform of choice that day consisted of a pair of worn cargo shorts, their pale blue color matching that of my shirt. A slightly greener baseball cap rests ill fittingly on the top of my head, and I am in fact surprised that the breeze hadn't yet blown it from its precarious position and into the face of some unfortunate bystander. My eyes don't meet the camera. Instead, they gaze ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Brief Note On The Crimes Of The Past Atoning for the crimes of the past Social culture, from what we know, has an impact on the way people view the world around us, and one of the most influential we see currently is the media. As kids grow up and develop, they are exposed to a lot of media from Nickelodeon to Cartoon Network, to one of the most impactful, Disney Channel. When it comes to the media we know that over the course of time things can be skewed to look a certain way and they typically may have subliminal messages. So what message are we showing our children? When it comes to Disney and their iconic princesses, we know that they typically tend to all look the same in appearance. From Cinderella to Rapunzel, they all tend to have the same features. Straight, blonde hair and pale skin. Some concerns came with this as people started to notice these main features when it came to the disney princesses. This led to Disney including a new princess, the famous Tiana, first of her kind. However, this still begs the question as to whether or not the new African American Disney princess repairs the damage done by Disney over the course of time in regard to the perpetuation of racial stereotypes? Although creating Tiana is a positive step towards improvement, her creation still fails to repair the damage fostered by the perpetual stereotypes. When it comes to television, at least in the eyes of animation, different types of cartoons are being broadcasted in front of children. Growing up as a child on a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Every Saturday morning my father would wake me up at 7am to take me to downtown Dallas, and I would nag my heart out– begging him to let me stay home to watch Saturday morning cartoons. But he would not relent. Solomon's porch would take place in the worst part of Dallas, a place where graffiti, trash, and homeless people were everywhere. But in the mist of all the rundown buildings there was a little church that let the ministry come and fed the homeless breakfast and lunch. After going for than a year my dad started forced me out of the church, where I would watch Disney movies to actually helping in the breakfast ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Effects Television Violence Has on Children Essay The Effects Television Violence Has on Children Television has both positive and negative effects on children between the ages of two and five. Some research shows that violence in the media can be linked to aggressive behavior in children. Though, some researchers disagree with this statement and believe that there are other factors, besides television, which cause children to become violent. The following essay will reflect both sides of this argument. Violent television shows lead to violence in children between the ages of two and five. A study conducted by Albert Bandura concludes that violence in the media can lead to aggressive behavior. In this study, the experimental group was shown a cartoon where the characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many usually sit their child in front of the television and go about their business of cleaning, paying bills or other things. Parents need to be knowledgeable on the types of violence shown on television especially that which is seen in cartoons. For example, the cartoon "Power Rangers" has much aggressive behavior that parents can overlook. When exposed to this show, children between the ages of two and five were said to imitate the actions of the characters towards one another. Research shows that less than five percent of shows have a non–violent subject matter ("Children"). Parents need to take time out of their day and sit down with their child to observe what they are watching on television. Parents should also explain the consequences of violent behavior, since television rarely does this. Aggressive behavior shown on television, particularly in cartoons, leads to violent behavior in children. There are other factors, other than television, that can lead to aggressive behavior in children. Research conducted by Guy Cumberbatch says that, in some cases, noise can cause children to act violent. Other research shows that the increase in murders in the United States is due to an increase in population. Japan has very violent television, though, has little "real–life" violence (Westrup). Many Hollywood persons have tried to create non–violent programs. This shows that people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They will encourage identification with the aggressor; domination and submission, to them, are often equated with pleasure and worth. Yet numerous researchers have put much time into discovering why children are so attached by the television and the action that takes place within it. They prove that it is definitely a major source of violent behavior in children. Their research proves time and time again that aggression and television viewing do go hand in hand. The truth about television violence and children has been shown. Many people and critics try to ignore it and hope that it will go away. Others do not even seem to care and try to attack these ideas. However, the facts are undeniable and all the results point to one conclusion: Television violence causes children to be violent and the effects can be life–long. The effects of the television are first visible even at the most basic level of life, children and adolescents. The modern–day extent of viewing by humans, especially Americans, is astronomical. Children begin to watch television at very early ages, often when they are newborns. Viewership was steadily increasing, and the amount of family time spent in front of the television screen was steadily declining. I remember how watching it was the highlight of my week. Despite my father's objection – apparently it was only for girls – I was devoted to watch it. So I woke up every Saturday morning, sneaked into the living room, switched on the TV and entered a world of fascination. Unlike most kids, fighting crimes, solving crisis and saving the world was not what caught my attention. What I anticipated most was the moment when Jerry provided the three girls with their crucial gadgets for their next mission, gadgets he had invented in his high–technology advanced lab. I was not merely interested in the design, but also attracted by the hardware and software that make those items function. In lieu of gadgets, piles of "T3" magazines on my nightstand filled the gap as my new source of inspiration and fostered my interest in new technologies. One of my first designed concept was a phone, it took me weeks to finish it. Every time I opened the file, I was dissatisfied and wanted to improve it from small tweaks like the microphone placement to significant changes like the width of the phone. I even went a step further by fabricating real life wooden models to find the optimal size. Even though I knew that at the end of the day, it was not going to be built, I strived for perfection. Finally, after several trials and errors, I finished it and felt this great sense of accomplishment and an ineffable joy. The plan was for me to meet Ms. Clara Mae who is a resident there. My expectations for the day were not the best, I dreaded the smell of being in a nursing home. As I approached room 406, I noticed a faint lemon smell that floated around the hall. I cautiously tapped on her wooden door and noticed a festive, fall wreath hanging crookedly by her mailbox. "Ms. Clara Mae?" A small tinkling voice called out, "Come in!" As I entered her room, I noticed lemon yellow curtains hanging in the window with a yellow and white quilt on her bed with butterflies stitched on it. At first, I did not see her. She ... She asked about my school, and we talked about where she went. Soon, it was time for me to go and I could not believe that the time had flown by. Ms. Clara Mae seemed sleepy and tired and she told me that she normally took a nap before lunch. That was my cue that I must move on to visit the other residents in the activity/recreation area. The scent of lemon wafted over to me once again, and I realized that she had an air freshener plug in the wall nearest the window. Evidently, she did not like the smell of nursing homes either. It suddenly hit me that she could be me in the future! She had a similar story like me, she liked some of the same things I did, and she had a great sense of humor. All Ms. Clara Mae needed was someone to listen to her and a little companionship. I had learned that her family no longer visited her anymore and the only people that saw her on a routine basis was a group that came from a church once a month. How sad! I felt connected to her and it crushed me to leave her. She seemed to understand and reassured me that she knew I was busy and had lots of things to do.
