Stem cells have the potential to develop and multiply into many different cell types in the body.
Stem cells are able to divide throughout life without limit. This causes the stem cells to be able to
develop into another cell type, which means it is specialised cell; to do a more specific function or it
may remain the same. [5] As stem cells divide they have the ability to help to be able to renew or

Stem cells are what are called undifferentiated cells, which means that they are not specialized cells.

There is little argument against using adult stem cells because when used, a donor consents to
donate their cells. However, there are many arguments against using embryonic stem cells because
these come from embryos, one of the earliest stages of a baby. There are those who fight against it
because they believe that embryos have the same rights as every other human being and should not
be used for this. Some feel very strongly because while taking the cells from it, the embryo is

The principle of double effect is the belief that a good end never justifies the evil means. An
example of this, besides embryonic stem cell research, would be bombing a country, killing innocent

The society is not at an agreeable point when it comes to the research of stem cells obtained from
human embryos. The disagreement narrows down to a clash between the two fundamental principles
of ethics: The duty to prevent and alleviate suffering, and the duty to respect the value of human life.
In most situations, both principles can be satisfied. However, in the research of embryonic stem
cells, it might not be inherently possible.
Generally, the clash between the two principles is not created by a violation of the duty to prevent or
alleviate suffering. In fact, it is the prime purpose of the research. On the other hand, depending on
the consideration of the statues of the embryo, the research might violate the duty to respect the
value of life. If the embryo is considered a person, its research would be a violation to human life; if
the embryo is not considered a person, there would be no violation to human life. Such
consideration of the human embryo is the factor responsible for the clash.
What do the statues of the embryo and the ethical principle of life have to do with the research of
embryonic stem cells? Well, in order to perform a research, a new line of stem cells has to be
developed. When the cells are extracted from the blastocyst, the embryo is destroyed since it cannot

Although this policy has already taken effect, there are still bans and immense regulation on

recommendation is to create modifications to slightly intensify but mostly fortify this policy so that

Type I diabetes is often diagnosed in young children and is caused when the immune system attacks
the pancreatic beta cells in the body. This stops the production of insulin, which is bad because the
patient can no longer absorb glucose like a normal person. This causes the body to use fat as an
energy source. Type I diabetes becomes a burden to the patient, who has to constantly monitor their
blood pressure and inject insulin into their bodies on a daily basis. Experiments on mice have shown
that it is possible to use embryonic stem cells to create immature pancreatic beta cells once
transplanted into the pancreas. When these pancreatic beta cells mature they will be able to produce

Human Embryonic Stem Cells
The human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) have defined by Bryant and Schwartz (2008) is in the
mammalian embryo, there are several cell divisions that take place after the fertilization of the
sperm and the egg in the uterus. There is no growth in the total volume of the cell, so the cells that
are known as blastomeres get progressively smaller. Then, they are rearranging into a hollow ball
known as blastocyst and surround the blastocoel which is a fluid–filled cavity. The blastocyts and
then segregate into an outer layer called tropoblast and an inner cell mass (ICM). The tropoblast will
form the placenta to the fetus while the inner cell mass that contains human embryonic stem cell
will form the tissues of the fetus. According to Sandel and Phil (2004), the hESCs can cure and
provide treatment for many kinds of disease such as Parkinson, Alzheimer, diabetes and spinal cord
injury. But, ethical issues of hESCs research, therefore, overlap with those of the embryo research.
On top of that, De Wert and Mummery (2003) commented that the research of hESCs has high
political and ethical agenda in many countries. Their use in the treatment of disease remains

Type I diabetes is often diagnosed in young children and is caused when the immune system attacks the pancreatic beta cells in the body. This stops the production of insulin, which is bad because the patient can no longer absorb glucose like a normal person. This causes the body to use fat as an energy source. Type I diabetes becomes a burden to the patient, who has to constantly monitor their blood pressure and inject insulin into their bodies on a daily basis. Experiments on mice have shown that it is possible to use embryonic stem cells to create immature pancreatic beta cells once transplanted into the pancreas. When these pancreatic beta cells mature they will be able to produce insulin for the body. One drawback is that when the cells mature they will have to divide and this could cause tumors in the pancreas.
