2. PORTRAITURE
INITIAL SOURCES
▸I chose my initial paintings because they were very detailed
and captured the figure in a very engaging way.
▸They use light in different ways to draw the eye of the
observer and to highlight certain things, for example, a
wedding ring. They use incredible shading and slight
alterations in colour to show the contours of the ace in great
detail which really inspired me.
▸They were all painted, which means they could blend the
colours easily to make it lifelike.
3. PORTRAITURE
EXPERIMENTS AND DECISIONS
▸I used drawing to develop my ideas by trying different styles
and using different techniques such as mark making and
smudging. I tried using different grade pencils to make the
most realistic portrait.
▸I developed my original response to source paintings and
my own image by trying to use the shading styles and
lighting to concentrate the observer to a certain place.
▸I used different media to develop my ideas. I started with
pencils, then I used different grades of pencils, then fine
liners, then chalk, then oil pastels, and finally watercolour.
My work developed as I understood my face shaper more
and where the shading is needed to make it look more
realistic.
4. PORTRAITURE
FINAL OUTCOME
▸My final piece didn't turn out as expected. I did it all in
one go and therefore didn't give myself a chance to step
back and look at it. The face shape is completely wrong
and it looks more like a cartoon than realistic.
▸I am pleased how I blended the skin and how I shaded
the face as I think this is the most successful element of
the work as it is the only part which resembles me.
▸I learnt that watercolours are easier to correct mistakes
when the colour is lighter. I used the wrong shade for
my eyebrows but could not change it after first stroke.
5. YEAR 1
▸I found the research activities important to my learning experience. They
allowed me to look into the work of other artists and inspired me to
develop my own work by experimenting with their ideas.
▸My drawing skills developed as the year went on and I can now draw with
better dimensions and accuracy.
▸In terms of time management, at the begging of the projects I managed
my time well by completing classwork/homework on time. I should have
annotated my sketchbooks at the time of completing my work rather than
leaving it until the end to save me a lot of stress. Next time I will consider
making a plan to ensure I get everything done and don't have to rush to
meet the deadlines.
6. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
▸Over the year, my ideas about progression developed about
how id get to a final outcome. At first I would think of an idea
and jump to making it. Now I try to develop my ideas by
experimenting different techniques and styles.
▸My current progression aim is to annotate my sketchbook
more so that I can easily see how my ideas have
progressed.
▸For this I need to be strict with myself about he amount of
work i do at home every week.
