2. What were the aims of the artefacts? What
were they supposed to show and represent?
I made three production pieces. The firstone was a synopsis, which is a clear summary of the films storyline.
The second was scripts that included dialogue and actions, and the third was my 9 key frame images. The first
piece of production work that I did was create a synopsis. This is so that I had my film storyline written out and
could move onto the scripts, knowing what to write. I researched each production piece before I started so
that I could create realistic pieces. For the scripts, I found examples online so that I had an idea of how to set
one out properly. This allowed me to create realistic scripts following the conventions. For example, I included
slug lines and scenes in the correct places. For the key frame images, I used applications, such as Photoshop
and iPhoto to digitally enhance my images. This allowed me to make my images look more realistic as I could
change the lighting to match the mood that I was aiming for. These three production pieces show my
knowledge of production conventions as in each piece, I have carefullyresearched each convention that is
used. For the scripts, I included conventions that are typically used, to show that I understand what is needed
and where it goes.
3. What codes and conventions identified in the textual
analysis were used in the artefacts and why?
In my textual analysis, I studied the romance genre. In both films, there was a shock twist that happened.
I decided to include this in my production work as I wanted to shock my audience and make it
unexpected. I included a shock twist in my work but have an accident that involved the girl being run over.
This made my artefacts more interesting and gripping. Another convention that I found was the boy and
girl become best friends and I chose to include this because it is a cliché and I wanted to stick to a
conventional romance film. In one of the films I studied in my textual analysis, the use of instant
messaging was used. I decided to base the communication between the two people around instant
messaging and video chat because I wanted to keep them apart but still feel close together. In my scripts,
many of the scripts I created are the two people talking via messaging, but it is still real life as it is
instantly happening. Another convention that I identified was the setting that a few scenes took place. I
based one of my key frames off this convention because it links to accident that I spoke about earlier. It
also establishes the next couple of events that happen in the storyline.
4. How were the planning materials used in the
construction of your artefacts?
I linked all the contentfrom my synopsis, scripts and key frame planning to create my final 9 images. I
did this by using the key information from each piece of work and making sure that it all followed
through.I planned out each piece of production work,so that I had an idea of what to write about. I
used the synopsis to create my scripts, which allowed me to get a better understandingof how
scenes would play out. This then linked in with the key frame planning, where I got to delve in deeper
to see how I wanted the images to turn out. These all linked together and helped me create my final
images, as they all gave me inspiration and helped me think of new ideas that would look good. The
production pieces also helped everything set in place and made a lot more sense as I completed
them all. As I had only started with the synopsis, without the scripts and key frame planning, I
couldn't fully visualise what the outcomewould be, but as time went by it became a lot easier
because the production pieces fit like a puzzle and I got to think about things from differentaspects.
5. How successful were the artefacts in
achieving the aims? What are its strengths?
I think that each production piece looks realistic, because I took time researching the different conventions
that are needed. I also used examples alongside the research to create professional pieces. For the synopsis, I
found websites that showed you how to build up a synopsis and what to include. This helped me plan my
storyline better, as I could build on what I had already written. When it came to the scripts, I had no clue on
how to start one or what conventions were used by professionals. As time went by, I looked up different
examples and found websites that clearly explained where conventions were used and what they meant. This
allowed me to learn different terms such as a slug line, which occurs at the start of every scene and can be up
to three different parts. Another term that I learnt was every time a character is mentioned, they have to be
in caps to make it clear that they are the characters. I believe that my final images look professional, as I
considered the lighting and type of shot as well as the digital enhancements that I did. This has helped them
look a lot more realistic because I have set the effects to fit the mood that I wanted to create. I like my
artefacts that I have produced because they all look professional. I am happy with how my synopsis turned
out because it summarises the storyline well and isn't too long. This means that people reading it won't
become bored but will still understand what happens. For my scripts,I am happy with how they look,
because I thoroughly researched what needed to be in them, so they look like realistic scripts that you would
see in a real life situation.
