2. Planning for TOC Image
I will be making a very vague plan because I don’t want a specific picture, but just one that
represents a music article. So, I have given myself shots and props I can choose from in the
photo-shoot
Agency Name VIVANT
Model Louisa Tooth, Hannah Sewell, Louise Akroyd and Rebecca Kavanagh
Camera height/angle/distance • Eye-level with a Medium Shot/ Medium long Shot
• High Shot at medium level
• Low shot at medium level
Location Studio (in house) or Outside in the streets/ garden
Lighting/Macro/Flash Inside House
• I will hang the sheet on a window, for the light to go through the sheet
to reflect on the camera.
• If inside lighting is not good and the task above does not work, then I
will take the picture outside in the natural light, then edit the models
into a different background
Outside
• I will not use flash because of the natural light
3. Mise-en-scene (incl. props, costume) Props- it is optional whether I will use a musical instrument, because I
already have one on the front cover
Costume- Teenage Styled fashion, whether that is spring colours, or dark
colours
Louise Akroyd- She will be dressed in a chic way, to represent a
stereotypical make-up artist
Background Background-
• Hannah and Louisa: will have a white background
• Louise: will be in any part of the house, as long as it isn’t similar to Hannah
and Louisa’s background
• Rebecca: she will be outside, and I want some greenery behind her e.g.
trees, to give some colour
Attempted connotation (what you’re trying to show through the costume, I’m trying to demonstrate the active life of a musician
models, etc….)
Planned denotation (what you see when you look at the front cover) The reader would be merely seeing musicians, as well as other
professionals in the business e.g. make-up artists
Contingency (in case of model absence/weather) If the weather is not good outside e.g. grey sky, then I will take the picture
where you cannot see the sky, as long as there is greenery in the
background. If it begins to rain, then I will take the image in another part of
the house.
Alternate angle If the shots that I will choose do not work, then I will use long shots, or
even a bird’s eye-view (looking straight down towards the model), to put a
unique picture on my Table of Contents Page
Thinking points: I must make sure that every picture I take, can relate to an article that my magazine could write about.
Comments:
4. Photography Explanations
• Aperture- will be at ƒ/11, because there will be
lots of natural light on the musicians, therefore
the iris doesn’t need to be large
• Shutter Speed- will be handheld at 1/60, because
the musicians will be in still positions, therefore,
the shutter doesn’t need to be fast to capture the
image
• ISO- will be low at 200, because there is lots of
natural light, therefore the sensitivity must be
lower to avoid noise in the picture
5. Decisions on TOC Image
• Unlike my other plan’s I haven’t asked my target audience which picture
they prefer. Instead I have chosen these picture’s myself, because I had to
think about if there was an article that could go with this picture for my
Contents Page.
• I do not have a 4th picture, because I have too many shots of musicians,
and I want one shot with just musical instruments or an instrument
6. Basic Photoshop tools for editing
• 1st Image: I will use brightness and contrast on
the image, because the background is too dark
• 2nd Image: I will also use brightness and contrast,
but because this is a medium shot, I will use the
spot tool and healing tool
• 3rd Image: Even thought the image is very bright ,
I will still just lighten and contrast it slightly,
because her face is shadowed by her hair. Also, I
will use the spot and healing tool, as it is a
medium shot
