Ao1 – understanding photography surreal

  1. 1. Ryan Banks AO1 – Understanding Photography The genre of images I’ll be looking at is surreal, they’re photographs that have usually been edited in a way to present what the photographer or artist is Photographic Category: The photographic category for this image is surreal. Purpose: The main purpose for the image is to sell like every other photographer. Photographer is a job and they make money by selling their images to other magazines, websites etc. The other purpose is for the photographer to create the image that he creates in his head so other people can see it. Image Analysis: Framing – The subject for this image is clearly the elephant as he is positioned in the centre of the fame. Lighting – The lighting for this image is coming from directly above the subject, this is because there are no shadows and the bottom of the subject’s body is in darkness. Narrative – The narrative for this image could be that they’re trying to show stereotypes, elephants are known as boring and dull animals and butterflies are known as colourful and beautiful animals. The image might be trying to suggest that every human or animal is beautiful in its own way. As the wings on a butterfly are the things that make them so beautiful, they may have put them
  2. 2. Ryan Banks over the elephants ears to suggest that the ears of an elephant are what’s beautiful about them, they’re unique. Miss-en-Scene – The use of orange colours in the image suggest heat, so they could be used to suggest the elephant is in its natural habitat such as Africa. Meaning – The meaning of this image could be that everybody and everything is beautiful and no body is dull. Hence why he has put a beautiful and colourful creature over the top of a dull and boring creature. Photographic Category: The photographic category for this image is surreal. Purpose: The main purpose for the image is to sell like every other photographer. Photographer is a job and they make money by selling their images to other magazines, websites etc. The other purpose is for the photographer to create the image that he creates in his head so other people can see it. Image Analysis: Framing – For this image you could say there are 2 subjects, one being the red umbrella and the other being the never-ending pathway. The subject for this image is not framed in any particular way but it doesn’t need to be because the colours are used so that particular umbrella stands out. However, the image is framed so that the leading lines lead us to the vanishing point which is framed in the centre.
  3. 3. Ryan Banks Lighting – Dim lighting, grey colours in the sky makes the image a gloomy, more depressing image. Narrative – The narrative for this image would be standing out. Everyone in the crowd has a black umbrella except for one person has a red one. The pathway that everyone is walking down could suggest the path of life, go school, college, get a job. The umbrellas are meant to symbolise people and that although everyone follows the same path, you can still stand out from the crowd. Miss-en-Scene – The use of black and grey colours put a very gloomy feel on the on the image, the dull colours set a sad tone to the image. The amount of black umbrellas used to show that everyone is the same. Meaning – The meaning for this image is individuality, showing that people can stand out from a crowd.
