5. Meaning and definition
Vertebrates means the animals which have skeleton and
back bone such animals are called Vertebrates.
Vertebrates are bilaterally symmetrical , triploblastic ,
coelomic and segmented, with complex differentiation
of body tissues and organs.
These animals have a true vertebral column and
internal skeleton. They have a muscle attachment points
to be used for movement.
6. All vertebrates possess the following features:
Vertebrates have a notochord
They have a dorsal nerve cord
They are triploblastic
They are bilaterally symmetrical
They have paired gill pouches
They are coelomate
8. PISCES
These are fish.
These are exclusively aquatic animals.
Their skin is covered with scales.
They obtain oxygen dissolved in water
by using gills.
The body is stream lined, and a
muscular tail is used for movement.
They are cold blooded
and their hearts have only two
chambers.
They lay eggs
Example – Rohu, flying fish, dog
fish and sea horse fish.

12. MAMMALIA
Mammals are warm blooded
animals
They have four chambered
heart
They have mammary glands
for the production of milk to
nourish their young
Their skin has hairs as well as
sweat and oil glands
Most mammals familiar to us
produce live young once
However , a few of them , like
the platypus and the echidna
lay eggs , and some like
kangaroos give birth to very
poorly developed young ones.
Examples – human, elephant,
cat, camel and dog etc.
