The Importance Of Cochlear Implants
Before the panel discussion, I never took the time to think about how much time and consideration a
parent must go through when deciding whether or not they should implant their child with cochlear
implants. After watching Sound and Fury, I learned the importance of the Deaf community and their
culture and that cochlear implants are not always seen as a good thing. Hearing from the perspective
of our guests, and seeing this decision from the eyes of audiologists/teachers of the Deaf, I see that
cochlear implantation is anything but an easy decision.
Since advancements in technology and evolution of the cochlear implant since its first debut, our
guest really opened my eyes to how much harder of a choice this has become for parents of Deaf

Puretone Audiogram Shows Hearing Loss
Puretone audiogram showed moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss from 250 to 2000 Hz
bilaterally. No responses recorded at higher frequencies at the audiometric limit.
Speech audiometry showed reduced speech discrimination abilities at high intensities. However, this
is consistent with her puretone audiometric results.
Tympanometry showed normal tympanometric peak and pressure bilaterally. Absent acoustic
reflexes were noted at all test frequencies for both ears.
B. Characteristics and limitations of Sue's current hearing aids.
One of the first things, perhaps the most important during hearing aids fitting, is to provide
appropriate gain for the patient after a thorough hearing assessment. Oticon Intiga RITE (receiver in
the ear) is aimed at an immediately comfortable fit and minimal occlusion to thus minimize
unnatural sensations. To use an RITE with open fit domes, Sue needs to have good low frequency
hearing. Apparently, it cannot provide enough gain Sue needed in the fitting software. It uses smaller
(size 10) batteries compared to batteries used by many other miniature hearing aids (size 312 or 13),
which could also pose management issues.
Intiga 6's modulation based noise management does not allow channel–specific noise reduction,
compared to TriState Noise Management. Modulation based noise management assesses the
likelihood of rather constant noise in specific frequency regions and tends to be sensitive to the
presence of any noise, whether speech is also

Question 1: Hearing aids and cochlear implants have different functions to help improve your
hearing. You currently have use hearing aids. Hearing aids come in many forms and offer different
features. Hearing aids makes the sounds and voices around you louder. Here is a picture of hearing
aid that you have. Depending on the hearing aid, the battery and ear piece will vary in size.
You mentioned that you have ptosis. A hearing aid may be difficult to operate because the buttons
are small and the battery doors are small. One of the benefits of a hearing aid is that you can take
them out when every you want and do not need to have surgery.
To get a cochlear implant you will need to have surgery. The surgeon will cut an incision in your

Benefits Of Cochlear Implants
One of the hottest debates between Deaf and Hearing culture lies in the question, "Should I give my
deaf child a cochlear implant?" The Deaf people fear that use of cochlear implants will eliminate
their culture. A hearing person may believe it will aid their child to learn in mainstream schooling,
or they may not want to learn sign language to communicate with their child. As about 90% of
hearing parents cannot effectively communicate with their deaf children (Holcomb, n.d., para. 2),
the latter is evident. Placed in this situation, I would implant my infant child with a cochlear implant
and teach them sign language so they will have the opportunity to have the best of both worlds.

Cochlear implants do not provide the high–quality sound of a natural hearing ear. Recently,
Professor Michael Dorman of Arizona State University discovered, from one of his patients that had
both normal hearing and hearing from a cochlear implant, what cochlear implants sound like.
According to audio recordings of his results, a person hearing via a cochlear implant hears speech
that is echoed, slightly robotic, and of somewhat lower quality than natural hearing (Griffiths, 2014,
para. 7). Nonetheless, the speech presented from the implant was mostly clear and understandable.
Since cochlear implants only provide a good, but not outstanding, audio quality and some sounds
can be difficult to understand, a deaf child may need to fall back on sign language, which is fully
accessible to them (Klaudia, 2013, para. 17). Sign Language will not hinder development, as a study
on deaf children in Spain suggests. At the University of Córdoba in Córdoba, Spain, a group of
eighteen deaf children with cochlear implants were compared, as some were bilingual (spoken and
sign) and some only knew spoken language. The children who were bilingual performed better at
verbal fluency (Herruzo, Jimenez, & Pino, 2009, para. 4). In other words, they are able to use a
greater number of words in spoken language. Use of sign language would also allow the child to
better associate with Deaf

The condition of not having the power of hearing or having impaired hearing. Hearing loss. A deaf
person has little to no hearing. Hearing loss may occur in one or both ears. Hearing loss can be
categorized as mild, moderate, moderate–severe, severe, or profound. Without a newborn hearing
test, the average age at which congenital deafness is diagnosed is 2 years. Children whose deafness
is treated in the first months of life gain critical time and get far better on development tests than
those whose diagnosed is delayed. People can go deaf suddenly as a complication of a virus, lose
their hearing over time because of disease, nerve damage, or injury caused by noise. About 3 out of

Hearing Loss and Cochlear Implants
Over 360 million people or about five percent of the world population have disabling hearing loss
(Deafness). Disabling hearing loss refers to hearing loss greater than 40 decibels for adults and a
hearing loss of greater than 30 decibels for children (Deafness). 40 decibels is equivalent to the tune
of a refrigerator humming. Although hearing loss can be mild, moderate, severe, or profound ––
there are numerous ways of improving the damaged hearing (Deafness). The most common ways
are through hearing aids and cochlear implants. Cochlear implants is a type of implanted electronic
hearing device; it is designed to produce hearing sensations that are useful to a person with profound
nerve deafness Cochlear Implants –€“ Facts). The device is more ideal for people who cannot
benefit substantially with the help of hearing aids (Cochlear Implants –€“ Facts). Today, over
219,00 people are using Cochlear Implants (Cochlear Implants, Baylor). The technology used in
cochlear implants is more complex and improves hearing and communication skills drastically.
Despite cochlear implants having many disadvantages, there are more benefits that will help towards
improving hearing loss.
The research of hearing loss first started in 1950 (Cochlear Implants –€“ Facts). It was discovered
that hearing could be obtained by directly inserting an array of electrodes into the cochlea of a
patient with profound deafness. It took another 30 years of research before the implant was

The Importance Of The Cochlear Implants
The cochlear implant is quite possibly one of the greatest ideas invented to benefit the deaf
community. American Sign Language (ASL) has been the main way the deaf communicate and is
extremely important to the deaf culture. To those that can hear, being deaf or profoundly hard of
hearing has been considered a handicap. It was for that reason that someone invented the cochlear
implant, causing a huge debate within the deaf community. Some of those in the deaf community
fear that their culture will be lost and destroyed, while others and the hearing community believe
that it will better their lives. Most do not realize that this procedure is not a cure and that it will leave
those with the implants confused as to where they belong in society. There are quite a few who
believe the cochlear implants work just like the hearing aid, only implanted in their head. However,
there are significant differences between the two. Cochlear implants do not restore normal hearing,
whereas the use of hearing aids can bring it close to normal. Hearing aids send amplified sound to
the damaged cochlea, and can be programmed to shape amplification of sound to match the hearing
loss. Hearing aids are very limited in their ability to aid severe and profound hearing loss beyond
environmental sound and vowels in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cochlear implants are made up of four different parts: microphone, speech processor, transmitter &
receiver/stimulator, and the electrode array. The microphone picks up sounds from the environment.
The speech processor selects and arranges sounds from the microphone. The transmitter &
receiver/stimulator receives signals from the speech processor and converts them into electrode
impulses. The electrode array is a group of electrodes that collect the impulses from the stimulator
and sends them to different regions of the auditory

Cochlear Implant History
A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that does the work of the damaged parts of the
cochlea, which is the inner ear, to provide sound signals to the brain. Cochlear implants were a
major breakthrough in history. There was now a way for people, who have had little or no benefit
from hearing aids, to receive sound. The cochlear implant, which was sometimes called a "Bionic
Ear" could help some people to hear again.
In 1972 the first single channel cochlear implant was introduced. This provided many deaf people
with better lip reading enhancement. In 1984, a multi–channel cochlear implant was introduced. The
difference between the single channel and multi–channel implant system was that the single channel
system only delivered sound ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The speech processor is like a computer, it is usually with the microphone behind the ear. The
speech processor analyzes the sound and sends it to the transmitter.
The transmitter is worn on the head just behind the ear, it sends coded signals to the implanted
receiver just under the skin. The receiver takes the coded electrical signals from the transmitter and
takes them to the electrodes which have been surgically implanted in the cochlea. These electrodes
then stimulate the auditory nerve and the sensation of sound in recognized.
Cochlear implants help provide a sense of sound to an individual who is deaf or hard of hearing.
They can help individuals who have hearing loss in both ears or in only one ear. The benefits from a
cochlear implant vary depending on whether the individual had hearing loss before or after
developing language, the individual's age, or the motivation of the individual.
Cochlear implants do not restore normal hearing, but they can help a deaf individual to have an
3
effective representation of sound and help the individual understand speech. Most of the time,
individuals tend to hear better with time and practice.
Some individuals have benefitted from cochlear implants and some have not. There

Cochlear Australia And New Zealand
Cochlear Australia and New Zealand is a company that specializes in electronic medical devices that
replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Cochlear Australia and New Zealand developed a
short film entitled "Does Love Last Forever?", which premiered in Australian theaters to attendees
of the movie Lion and eventually became a viral sensation. The film follows the story of a couple's
relationship from its early stages through to middle age and retirement, and asks the audience at the
end whether the couple remained happy and in love. In actuality, the film was disguised as a hearing
test and used camera angles, misleading body language, background noises to help determine the
viewer's hearing ability. Those that experience hearing loss rely more heavily on techniques like
watching body language, or lip reading, and removing the ability to do so while watching the film
helps the viewer interpret its own ending. Thus, those that could not hear the dialogue would
conclude love did not last, while those that could hear the conversation would determine that love
did last.
Cochlear's campaign uses spin tactics such as emotional manipulation and deception to create a
purchaser demand for their products. They specifically use the tactic of fearmongering, or
deliberately arousing public fear about an issue, to make the audience believe they may need a
hearing aid. The film is deliberately made to be difficult to hear regardless of your hearing
capabilities to create anxiety, drawing upon Edward Bernays' tactic of swinging emotional currents
as to create a higher purchaser demand (Bernays 54). This film is also spun to appear as a public
service announcement, where the primary focus of the campaign is to selflessly help the audience.
The video hides the fact that it is created by a company who would monetarily benefit from an
increased rate of hearing loss.
The spin used in this video was successful because it effectively tricks the viewer into thinking they
were experiencing hearing loss. In addition to carefully timed camera angles, the video allows the
audience to see themselves and their relationships through the couple and the focus on them makes
them less likely to suspect they are victims of spin. "When I

The Pros And Cons Of Cochlear Implants
Cochlear Implants are an object that is very controversial in the deaf community. "A Cochlear
Implants is a device that provdes direct electrical stimulation to the auditory (hearing) nerve in the
inner ear." ("Cochlear Implants") Cochlear Implants bypass the damaged hair cells, and directly
stimulate the auditory nerve. Depending on when the Cochlear Implant is implanted it allows people
to hear sounds, and sometimes even their own voice. While it does not cure hearing loss or deafness,
it does allow people to hear. On more technical terms a Cochlear Implant includes parts like a
microphone, speech processor, and a transmitter which each play a different part in the Cochlear
Implant. The microphone picks up sounds, sends them to the speech processer, and then the speech
processor analyzes and digitized the sound signal, thus sending them to a transmitter worn on the
head. The debate of whether or not Cochlear Implants are right in the deaf community is one that
has been going on for years. People believe having Cochlear Implants are a good thing, because they
allow deaf people to communicate with hearing people, it allows people who are not helped by
conventional hearing aids to be helped, and it creates new possibilities for deaf people. However
there are also people that argue that having a Cochlear Implant is a bad thing, because it proposes
the idea that deaf people need to be fixed, it can give deaf people false hope, and it proposes the idea
that deaf people have a

Mrs. Mayer is a 50 year old woman who went to her general practitioner complaining of some
hearing loss, ringing in her ears and dizziness. She was referred to an audiologist.
Hello, Mrs. Mayer I'm Dr. Howard an audiologist for Renown. I can see from your chart that you
were referred here because you were having problems with some hearing loss, ringing in your ears
and dizziness? Are you still having these issues? So the hearing loss and ringing is only in your left
ear. How long has this been going on? Okay so you have had these symptoms for about a month.
Let's go ahead and check your ears. I'm just going to look in your ears with this instrument called an
otoscope; it has a light on it so I will be able to see inside your ear. Mrs. Mayer ... Show more

Mayer's I have the results of your test back the MRT and hearing test. The MRT showed a small
benign tumor in your left ear along your 8th cranial nerve. This nerve is also called your acoustic
nerve this nerve sends signals for hearing. This tumor is what is known as acoustic neuroma. This
tumor is benign or not cancer, so it cannot spread to other parts of your body. It can however get
larger and press on other nerves, and cause you more issues, like facial numbness, changes in taste,
difficulty swallowing and other issues. It is the cause of the hearing loss in your left ear along with
the dizziness and tinnitus or ringing in your ears. Because the tumor is around 2.5 cm you will need
to have the tumor removed. Unfortunately, your hearing loss and tinnitus may be permanent, but you
can get a hearing aid to help amplify sounds, and there are some medications that can help with the
tinnitus. Although, your tinnitus and hearing loss may improve it could take weeks or even years to
see results after the tumor is removed. I have spoken with the neurosurgeon that can do your
surgery, we agreed that the best approach is stereotactic radiosurgery or gamma knife, it is a non–
surgical approach. It would use precise, targeted radiation beams to kill the tumor. This treatment
would avoid or minimize the chances of damaging important nerves that are responsible for balance,
hearing, and facial responses. The other option we spoke about is surgical removal or Retro–
sigmoid/sub–occipital in which a small part of your back skull is removed near the back of your
head, and this procedure also offers the possibility of preserving your hearing. I know that this is not
easy information to hear and recommend that you find a support group. Or someone you can talk to
like a family member or a friend. I will schedule you for a consolation with the surgeon; he will be
able to tell you more about the different surgery options. Then a follow up appointment will be set

Support Individuals With Specific Communication Need
1.1 Explain the importance of meeting an individual's meeting needs.
Every individual has the right to communication as the Human Rights Act (1998) lists the freedom
of expression as well as other rights relating to communication. As a support worker I have a moral
obligation as well as adhering to the standards, codes of practice, guidelines, morals and law that
govern my practice to ensure that communication needs are met. If an individual's communication
needs are not met then all aspects of their daily life can be affected such as not being able to

Some reasons why an individual may use a form of communication that is not based on a formal
language system include: * They are not trained or taught in formal language systems, for example
an individual could not talk or write but could hear, and either I or they didn't know sign language. *
They may not be able to access their normal language skills because a speech impairment caused by

Cochlear Implants Research Paper
According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, "About 2 to 3
out of every 1,000 children in the United States are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in
one or both ears." Cochlear Implants are mechanical devices that are highly promoted by the hearing
society to "cure" deafness. Despite the fact Cochlear Implants can be effective, the risk of serious
physical and emotional harm to a patient outweighs the chances of its success.
A cochlear implant is an electronic device inserted under the skin and behind the ear to cure severe
hearing loss. What isn't understood by most is that the people who are making the decision to get the
implant are usually not the ones going under the knife. Most hearing ... Show more content on

The American Medical Association says that "The main concern of the cochlear implant supporters
is for the deaf child to have access to the mainstream, or 'normal' hearing world" (Delost). They state
that the benefits range from detection of sounds to understanding spoken lip reading. Their child
would be presented with unlimited opportunities throughout life achieving equal amounts of success
just as much as the next hearing person. It's understandable that the parents of a deaf child would
like to be able to communicate with their offspring and that being deaf serves as a huge
communication barrier. However, normalizing the child against its will is detrimental to the child's

East Lake Therapy: A Short Story
It was a dreary Tuesday afternoon when Mr. Thomas Moore arrived at the East Lake Therapy
Outpatient Center. "What brings you here today sir?" the receptionist said. "An appointment with the
Audiologist" he replied. About fifteen minutes later, a lady came out from a big side door. "Mr.
Thomas Moore" she called. He got up and followed her into the clinic. She led him to a smaller
room split into two sections. One side had a chair and desk with several machines on it. The other
side was a booth with a window, which could only be entered through a thick door. Dr. Stacy led
Thomas into the booth and sat him down. "So Mr. Moore, before I begin I want to take a look inside

A Speech Pathologist would not be needed, as it is a hearing, rather than speech–communication
problem. Dr. Stacy's recommendations for Thomas would to first and foremost attempt to correct the
problem with behind–the–ear hearing aids since he is prone to earwax build–up. A traditional
behind–the–ear (BTE) hearing would be his best fit. Not only would they aid in amplification, but
they might also help to solve the tension in the household. Thomas would be able to use them every
day, whether he is at home or not. If BTE hearing aids ended up as an inappropriate or comfortable
choice for Thomas, she would then recommend an Assisted Listening Device (ALD), such as a
personal amplifier. This would reduce background noise and increase the sound levels. Dr. Stacy
could also recommend an infrared ALD system in conjunction with his hearing aids for use such as
in a restaurant. In the aural rehabilitation plan for Thomas, Dr. Stacy will evaluate him to ensure his
hearing aids are the most appropriate fit. She would perform the assessment based on his diagnosis
and extent of his hearing loss, as well as his

A Brief Note On The Deaf Culture And Hearing People
When a child or an adult who is deaf, there are many options one can take to fix their hearing if they
want to. They have the options of hearing aid, cochlear implants, an auditory brainstem implant, an
auditory midbrain implant, or use ASL. The cochlear implant is a very controversial topic between
the Deaf culture and hearing people. Deciding whether or not to receive the implant and be involved
in the Deaf culture is a very hard decision for someone to make because of the benefits but also the
complications that could happen after the surgery. My original opinion about the implant was neutral
because if I got asked what I would do if my child was born deaf, I would not know what to do
because I did not have enough information about the cochlear implant. However now, I feel that I
have learned more about the implant and think that an implant and still be exposed to Deaf culture is
the best way to go. So my original opinions I felt wishy washy about the topic. I understood both
sides of the argument, but I did not know what I would do. Getting the implant provides many
opportunities for the person, but then their deaf identity is not really in their life anymore because
the person needs to focus on speaking to learn English. So I did not know what I would do if I was
put in that situation. Throughout this class, I have gained more knowledge about the two sides and it
has helped me get a better understanding of what I would do if I had a child born profoundly deaf or

Popular Catch Argument: Can You Hear Me Now?
"Can you hear me now?" This phrase is commonly remembered as a popular catch phrase from a
television commercial highlighting bad cell phone reception. This phrase takes on a whole different
role, however, when talking to someone with a cochlear implant. Cochlear implants are miracle
workers for members of the deaf community.
Local Huntingdon resident Cecilia Grugan, knows firsthand what it is like to be able to hear using a
cochlear implant. She was diagnosed with hearing loss when she was 15 months old and had her
cochlear implant surgery at the age of 3 ½. There was also a documentary made about her story in
2003. Cecilia's family expressed that when Cecilia was younger they never really considered the

choice she will take her cochlear implant off and just sign. She knows and appreciates, however that
she has the option to work with hearing people because she also has those skills," Pamela
concluded.
Today Cecilia prefers to communicate without her cochlear implant. This frees her from struggling
to hear every last syllable a person is saying to her.
"When I am in the deaf community, I am liberated from everything designed for those who can hear.

Are Cochlear Implants Necessary?
Majority of the world that we live in, people are constantly reminded what is normal by society. The
world is run by big businesses and corporation that are usually visually dominant, however without
hearing it is viewed as a major disadvantage to the hearing world. Kent State University compiled
an accurate definition of the deaf community " those [of] deaf and hard of hearing individuals who
share a common language, common experience and values, and a common way of interacting with
each other, and with hearing people." The deaf community is viewed by the hearing world as an
official handicap since they deviate from what is considered normal. Many of the deaf communities

Or even a deaf person that is able to hear voices, pick out music notes with hearing aids. They
usually will recommend cochlear implants for the profoundly death. However from the HLAA
(Hearing Loss Association of America) discussed that "About one–fourth of the overall range of
outcome can be explained based on the length of deafness and about one–sixth of depends on the
word understanding capabilities prior to implantation. Other patient, ear and device variables
demonstrated no significant correlations with the benefit achieved with respect to speech
recognition." Meaning cochlear implants are still an unperfected machinery to help all deaf humans.
Some of Bowen's friends from the deaf community still refuses to receive the surgical implant
because they fear how their deaf family and community would feel about them receiving. Chris, one
of Bowen's friends stated " The reason why we still haven't gotten the implant is because the deaf
culture is where we belong with our own sets of social beliefs, language, customs, and even history.
The hearing world views deafness as an impairment, however the deaf community learned how to
encourage and embrace deafness as something more." The way I saw it, the hearing world saw it has
a disease, imperfection that needs to be cured, but with the cure at hand it can lead to a complete
ethnocide. I sat down with Bowen and we started debating whether it was the right choice to receive

The Importance Of Deaf Education
Whether someone responds to a person knocking on a door, a car honking down the street, or
speakers blasting loud music, our hearing plays a significant role in providing us with vital
information. Hence, hearing is an important sense, and "the significance of hearing often goes
underappreciated until it is no longer available" (Saint Joseph's University, 2017). In spite of that,
research proves that children who experience hearing loss must have opportunities to enjoy a quality
of life that does not remind them of their disabilities, but experience a quality of life that makes
necessary modifications to augment their abilities. It is fair to state that Deaf education evolved over
a course of centuries, with Pedro Ponce de Leon making history as a pioneer teacher for students
who were deaf. As a 16th–century Spanish monk, Ponce de Leon received recognition for
revolutionizing the education of children by creating "one of the original manual alphabets" (Saint
Joseph's University, 2017) for speaking and fingerspelling. Concurrently, Geronimo Cardano joined
the movement for Deaf education in 1550 by disclosing that hearing loss should not deny people
opportunities to learn (Saint Joseph's University, 2017). With significant gains from Ponce de Leon's
innovative system for communication, along with Cardano's experience as a father of a son who had
a hearing disability, both individuals established themselves as credible sources–proving that
children are capable of learning by

Essay about Discrimination Against the Deaf Culture
The deaf community does not see their hearing impairment as a disability but as a culture which
includes a history of discrimination, racial prejudice, and segregation. According to an online
transcript,"Through Deaf Eyes" (Weta and Florentine films/Hott productions Inc., 2007) there are
thirty–five million Americans that are hard of hearing. Out of the thirty–five million an estimated
300,000 people are completely deaf. There are ninety percent of deaf people who have hearing
parents (Halpern, C., 1996). Also, most deaf parents have hearing children. With this being the
exemplification, deaf people communicate on a more intimate and significant level with hearing
people all their lives. "Deaf people can be found in every ethnic group, ... Show more content on

deaf since infancy. He bought to the United States a nonverbal form of communication known as
French sign language (Halpern, C., 1996). The technique that Clerc taught was by the use of his
hands, which he communicated with French sign language, blended with a bit of signs used by
students in the United States. To Gallaudet the language was a inspiration which he called it,
"Highly poetical" (Weta and Florentine films/Hott productions Inc., 2007), but to Clerc and many of
the deaf people, the using of sign was natural and useful. This was a result of a created acculturated
nonverbal language known as American Sign Language (ASL). As new schools for the deaf spread
west and south, American sign language also evolved as well in the states of New York,
Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois. By the year of 1864, Abraham
Lincoln signed a law constituting the first college in the world for deaf students called Gallaudet
University and all these schools used sign as a curriculum (Weta and Florentine

Taking a Look at Cochlear Implants
Sometimes people forget that eyesight and hearing are not something that everybody has. There are
some people in the world that are living without one or both of these senses. In some circumstances,
these two senses are able to be given to somebody who hasn't had them before. There are many
different procedures and ways for a person to either gain their eyesight or hearing again, for the first
time in their life. In terms of hearing, there is a procedure that is booming popularity all over the
world. Along with having the surgery, the patient then wears a device called a cochlear implant.
Cochlear Implants are changing the world of hearing so that people who receive them are able to
gain hearing ability to sounds around them. This partially unknown medical procedure is gaining
more attention around the world with its high success rates and its ability to change peoples lives
forever. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
Website, a cochlear implant is defined as a "small, complex electronic device that can help provide a
sense of sound to someone who is profoundly deaf or severely hard–of–hearing." The first cochlear
implant demonstration was in Paris in the 1950's done by André Djourno and Charles Eryiés.
Records say that it took over 50 years of discovering and making these devices until one succeeded.
Once they had built one that worked, Djourno and Eryiés conducted their first operation by putting a

Hearing Aids Essay
Getting hearing aids and other hearing aids
If you have persistent problems with hearing impairments are often helped by hearing aids ,
regardless of what is causing the symptoms. There are also other hearing aids that can be helpful.
Many of them are used in combination with hearing aids, while others used standalone. But to try
out a hearing aid is usually the first to get help when you started hearing worse.
Getting hearing aids and other hearing aid is part of what is called auditory rehabilitation. It means
also the investigation of hearing loss, fitting and adjustment of hearing aids, and if necessary, for
example, on hearing a teacher or counselor.
Here you can find a list of what hearing aids and hearing aids that are available.

How does the testing for?
If the needs assessment has shown that you need hearing aids, they usually tested during several
visits to the audiologist. Each visit takes between 30 and 60 minutes. The audiologist propose
appropriate hearing aids on the basis of the hearing loss, the life situation you have and how you
yourself describe their problems and needs. Different types of hearing aids fit different needs.
It usually takes home the equipment or the pair of devices audiologist suggested to try at home and
use them as much as possible. Then you come up visit. Then you tell me how it worked with the
hearing aids in everyday life, and the audiologist tweaking them to fit as well as possible.

The Problem Of Deaf Culture
Deaf culture is a way to start this essay. Most people, when they think of deafness, assume that it is
nothing more than a disability. This is erroneous because defining what deaf really means, means
looking past the definition and looking into the heart of a deaf person, to see equality among us all.
Equality among humans isn 't controversial, but what is? Cochlear Implantation is controversial.
Inserting an internal disruption of the deaf culture is controversial. Placing an electronic device in
your children 's ears because you want them to talk like a normal child is controversial. After having
a very rigorous debate about CI 's in my ASL class, I came to the conclusion that out of 30 students,
more than half of them would choose implantation of their young fragile, pure child. Being deaf is
way more than just being able to hear, being deaf is a gift; a family within a family, and implanting a
child a child under your circumstances only shreds the wrapping paper off that gift. Lets jump right
into the positive facts of cochlear implants, because there isn 't many. in a very descriptive and
informational article by Ron Kotulak, he mentions that, "The implant significantly improve the
hearing of adults in conjunction with speech –reading. Benefits have also been observed in children
as young as two." So, it is an unbiased fact that, in some cases, Cochlear Implantation is highly
effective and serves as a great purpose for the treatment of hearing loss. The FDA, Food and

Barriers to Effective Communication for Nurses Essay
Barriers to Effective Communication
Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages between two or more people; this
is something that we do all the time. It is important that nurses recognize that communication is the
key to good holistic care, as patients need reassurance and information regarding their care.
Communication is so much more than just talking to one another. It is how people respond to each
other in many different ways (Langs 1983).
Some examples of communication are talking, writing, signing, reading and body language, which
is suggested, has several elements (Dimbleby and Burton 1992).
Communication can be very effective but first it needs to be ... Show more content on

Hearing loss can be broken down into many different categories. For example, there are two main
types of hearing loss, these are pre lingual deafness and post lingual deafness. These can then be
broken down into physical, psychosocial and spiritual aspects. For the purpose of this work, I am
going to explore the physical aspects of deafness.
Many people just assume that the main problem with having a hearing impairment is that it is hard
to understand speech and the consequent isolation from the rest of the noise–producing world.
However, pre lingual deafness is defined as someone who has been completely deaf from birth so
therefore gives rise to expressive problems in both speech and language (Syder 1992). A post lingual
deaf person is someone who has lost there hearing suddenly or gradually and the loss can be partial
or total (Syder 1992).
One fifth of the countries population suffers some sort of hearing loss (Martin and Grover 1986).
This covers a wide range of problems from minor difficulties to complete loss.
Not recognising a hearing problem could result in patients/clients becoming withdrawn, isolated and
excluded from people around them.
Chalfont suggests that deafness was the loneliest disability as it isolates them from the rest of the
community (Chalfont 1986).
The most frustrating and depressing part about

The Cause And Effect Of Deafness
About ninety percent of the global population has the ability to hear the sound of their family 's
voice, hear their favorite songs, hear their own voice, these are just a few sounds that sadly are taken
for granted by many people, and unfortunately many will never get to experience. About 10% of the
Global population is affected by some percentage of hearing loss with hundred twenty four million
people affected from a moderate level to a severe deafness. Deafness is caused by different
situations. Research shows that two to three out of thousand children in US are born deaf. There is
no actual cure for deafness, but in 1982 the invention of cochlear implants gave profoundly deaf and
severely hard of hearing individual the chance to experience sound in a completely new way. This
electronic device that is implanted in the brain behind the ears can give deaf individuals hearing
ability. While many people can agree this invention had changed the way the world sees deafness,
opinions differ on whether a deaf child needs the implant to be successful. Despite objections by
activists in the Deaf community that cochlear implants destroy Deaf culture, children who cannot
hear should receive the surgery as a way to improve their communication skills, increase their
educational options, and improve their career opportunities.
In many ways, deafness is hardest on children. Language is learned from hearing it spoken by
parents and other. Deaf children struggle with communicating more

College Music Majors and Non–Music Majors: Hearing Thresholds and Distortion Product
Otoacoustic Emission Results
Introduction
Studies have shown that noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) can be caused by repeated loud
exposures to music (Miller, Stewart, & Lehman 2007; Phillips, Henrich, & Mace 2010). Miller et al.
(2007) found that university student musicians are a high risk population for hearing loss. In 2010,
Phillips et al. found that of 329 student musicians, 45% had a NIHL. This study will focus on the
differences in hearing thresholds and Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission results (DPOAEs)
between college music majors and non–music majors. This will help determine if steps and
precautions need to be taken to avoid NIHL in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Su–Hyun et al. (2013) included giving information to the marching band members about the use of
hearing protection devices but over 50 percent of students reported not using the ear plugs during
rehearsals. Schmidt et al. (2014) included that hearing protection devices are a good idea, but did
not include whether or not this information was given to the participants. As a result of Phillips et al.
(2010), the university implemented a hearing conservation program. Jansen et. al (2009) also
incorporated information about giving musicians access to learning about the risks of noise
exposure. These studies have all concluded that continuing education about the risks of noise, use of
hearing protection devices, and the repercussions of hearing loss is important for musicians and
should be implemented in music programs.
Rationale Halevi–Katz et al. (2015), Phillips et al. (2010), and Schmidt et al. (2014) have linked
hearing loss to musicians. Miller et al. (2007) and McBride et al. (1992) have shown that musicians
are an at risk population for hearing loss. Further research should be done to further develop if
student musicians are only an at risk population for hearing loss or are experiencing some form of
hearing loss when in comparison to their non–music major related peers. This will help prove that
hearing conservation programs are needed on college campuses

Deaf Again Essay
Could you picture yourself growing up as in a world where everyone treated you differently or
thought that you were stupid just because you are unable to hear? Well Mark Drolsbaugh
experienced that first hand. He explains his story of how he dealt with his hearing loss in his novel
Deaf Again. The book begins with a small child who could hear just fine, but as the story progresses
he becomes hard of hearing and eventually deaf. All this happens with in a couple of years. Mark
realized that he had a hearing problem in the first grade when he was presenting a toy for show and

the only Deaf student to graduate from Germantown Friends School. He later attended Gallaudet
and realized that he was a normal person and could function just like everyone else. While at
Gallaudet he learned a lot about Deaf Culture and also met his wife there. He had a hard life but in
the end it is what made him who he was. Every parent who has a Deaf child should read this book so
they would understand what they need to do so their child has the most advantage with their
education and everyday life. There are many lessons that are taught, like you should not force a
child to use a hearing aid because they need to make their own decisions about how they want to
live, they might want to try to hear or just stay deaf because that is who they are. I highly

Cochlear Argument Essay
Furthermore, a mandatory cochlear implant would place restrictions on the Deaf child's free will.
For starters, a forced cochlear implant would be seen disrespectful to the family's ability to make
their own decisions. As such, one of the major factors of the cochlear implant is the decision–
making process that accompanies it; this concept is necessary in order for a family to conclude on
whether or not they wish their child to have a cochlear implant. Studies show that many aspects of
the decision–making process are influenced by outside sources such as extensive research from
professionals and media portrayals of cochlear implants; they influence the parents, who are directly
involved in the decision–making process, to be keenly aware of ... Show more content on

Since a forced cochlear implant would introduce the child into the hearing culture, this decision
would limit the child's opportunity to explore and learn more about the Deaf culture. One such
example demonstrates this by showcasing a video containing an interview with the hearing parents
of a deaf girl who has a cochlear implant; in this video, the parents stated that the reason why they
chose to have their daughter receive the cochlear implant, who was at the age of three and a half,
was because the child was struggling with her deafness and that the cochlear implant was the only
solution that would fix the issue ("Cochlear Implants – A Cultural Threat", n.d.). The main issue
here was that the parents believed that the only way their daughter would have a happy life was to
use the cochlear implant; there was little consideration given to alternative methods, primarily
because she was at a young age. If a forced cochlear implant were to be given to all Deaf children
early on in their lives, they would be given no choice but to accept the hearing culture; although
they could have functioned well in the Deaf culture, the culture that they were born in, the
mandatory cochlear implant forces them into a culture that opposes their

Deafness Speech
Imagine silence. Complete silence. Being shunned by the world, totally out of the picture. This is the
life of a deaf person. Many people are not aware of the different ways of the deaf community. A deaf
person utilizes their other four senses, and are more aware of their surroundings. It is vital to know
about the growing deaf community in order to understand the beauty behind it. Deafness can come
with many side affects, both good and bad. Deafness has affected people in many ways, such as
through genes, communication, and worsening educational skills. Throughout many years, people
have asked, "What is deafness?". "Deafness is the partial or total loss of the functional sense of
hearing. Loss of hearing can result from environmental or genetic causes and it can be temporary or
permanent" (Lichanska n.p.). This shows that there have been many thoughts and confusion about
deafness, as people thrive to find cures for this large obstacle. This is important because the deaf
community is growing. The human population needs to find more ways ways to make life more
convenient for the deaf community. "The deaf population in the world stands at about 0.1 percent of
the total population. About 10 percent of the world's people have poor to below average hearing,
where most of the people in the poor hearing range occurs in the adult population, especially among

According to Rena Lewis and Donald Doorlag, authors of Teaching Special Students in General
Education Classrooms, a hearing impairment is a disability characterized by a decrease in ability to
hear (pg 425). A child with a hearing impairment has trouble hearing sounds in the range of normal
human speech. There area three basic types of hearing impairments: sensorineural hearing loss,
conductive hearing loss, and mixed hearing loss. Along with these impairments there are many
different signs that as parents and teachers we can look for so that we can have accurate testing

Audiology these may consists of using excessively high volumes when watching TV or listening to
the radio, responding in appropriately to questions asked, or failing to answer when being talked to,
intently watching others so that they can imitate what they are doing, experiencing speech problems
or they have delayed speech, they may also be having difficulty in school, and they may also speak
differently than other children of the same age. When any of these signs are noticed an assessment
should be done. Assessment for a hearing impairment is very important, a hearing screening test will

are presumed to have no hearing loss. If you fail you are in need of an extensive evaluation which
would be performed by an audiologist and you may also need follow–up care from other

90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents (Michell 138–163). 40% of deaf children are

FDA for implantation into children as young as two years old (FDA). A hearing parent with a new

It is a linguistic minority that is worth exploring, with a rich and vibrant language. This language
shapes the community. Daniel S. Koo, a member of this community explains that, "'ASL exposes
children to the world's knowledge," he says, "and it incorporates self–esteem and aspects of deaf
culture'" (Bollag 1). Unlike with Julia, Deaf students who are placed in schools for the deaf, which
use sign language as the primary language during classes, Deaf children do not feel isolated or weird
for their inability to hear. Instead of reaching out to other isolated kids, they walk through their
schools making effortless friendships and learning just as hearing kids do. The only difference? The
language they use. Before ASL was accepted as an official language in these schools, many
educators and school prohibited signing and, "students had to wear mittens or sit on their hands as a
punishment for signing. Other schools used more severe reprimands" (Oral 1). Because of this
history, the modern community strives to create an environment of open communication, where the
stories that are told to friends could be seen as oversharing to hearing people unused to Deaf culture.
But this environment creates a close–knit community where everyone seems to know everyone.
Some parents, aware of this closeness, opt to learn ASL themselves and immerse themselves into the
Deaf community to be a part of their child's source of

The Is A Cure For Deafness
Imagine a life without hearing, waking up everyday in silence. Would you embrace your deafness,
have a hearing aid, or have a cochlear implant? Surely, all of these options are personal preferences;
however, one is better than the others: the cochlear implant operation, in a way, is a cure for
deafness. Having an opportunity to fully hear in both of your ears can open many gateways into
your life; the troubles of finding a school, a job, and doing basic things such as listening to music or
driving a car would be made easier. The cochlea is the auditory portion in your inner ear, usually
identified as a spiral like a snail shell. The cochlear implant contains two parts: the inner and outer.
The inner part, also known as the receiver, is where the surgery comes into play. The receiver is
placed under the skin above your ear where the surgeon carves a little part of the skull out for the
magnet to lay in. The outer part, also known as the processor, is worn on the ear and connects to the
magnet in your skull. The processor analyzes sound, sends it to the receiver inside your skull, which
sends electrodes to the auditory nerves (Chorost). Therefore, it would be very hard to lose the
cochlear implant whereas a hearing aid is very easy to lose. The hearing aid can be uncomfortable to
wear all the time, the batteries die quickly, and you can not get it wet. The cochlear implant can have
some discomfort such as a headache, and a stiff neck that lasts for a few days after the

2. Do you think that the child will have more difficulty with the vowels or the consonants and why?
I think that Julie will have more difficulty with the consonants because they are mostly found in
higher pitch areas of the speech banana. They also are softer being found on the lower decibel range.
Both of these areas are difficult areas for Julie to perceive those speech sounds.
3. Do you think that the home situation of the child has much influence on the child 's speech
abilities and if so, how has this child 's family influenced her speech abilities, based on what you
know about them?
Family involvement and influence is one of the top reasons for a child to either struggle or excel
with language and communication. From what I read there is a lack of support in the home. This is
mostly because of the age and condition of the hearing aids.
It is frequently found that a child with mild to moderate hearing loss such as Julie, can struggle even
more than a child with severe to profound hearing loss. This is because a child with mild to
moderate hearing loss is denied assistance or lacks proper diagnosis due to their ability to
understand some of the time. In Julie 's case it is possible that the low IQ diagnosis was daunting to

coming out of it. There are too many different ways of saying things; lip shapes are different; lip
movements are different; people enunciate words differently therefore causing different facial

What are advantages and disadvantages of deaf people using hearing aids or cochlear implants?
What are your thoughts on both of these devices? The advantage of hearing aids is that they can pick
up some sounds which make a deaf person feel more aware of what is going on. There are digital
aids that can be programmed to pick up the frequencies of speech but these are designed for users
with moderate deafness. The disadvantage of hearing (digital) aids is that severely or profoundly
deaf people do not benefit from digital aids. Others feel that they are uncomfortable and they do not
like wearing them.Hearing aids have been accepted as part of the Deaf culture because they are
removable and they do not involve invasive surgery. The advantage of having a cochlear implant

COMPARITIVE RESEARCH STUDY OF FUNCTIONAL OUTCOMES WITH ADIP AND NON
ADIP DIGITAL HEARING AID
Introduction:
Electronic hearing aids have undergone recent technological changes.(Dillon, 2001; Valente,
2002a).Digital technology has brought to the hearing aid industry is that of digital signal–processing
features such as more number of channel and band, multi memory HA(Chung, 2004a, 2004b). These
features can offer advantages in many difficult listening situations, but the scientific evidence that
they produce a significant increase in the satisfaction of hearing aid users is still fairly weak (Wong
et al2003). It is also clear that modern hearing aids and fitting rationales do not adequately address
some of the most fundamental requirements of hearing aid users. Kochkin (2002)reports that 83% of
HA users would like to hear more soft sounds, and 81% find loud sounds uncomfortable. As
increase in number channels and band costmore money. Most modern hearing aid manufacturers
offer products at multiple technology levels. To a patient, a difference in technology level often
means a difference in cost. To an audiologist, a difference in technology level may mean a
difference in patient outcome.

The Importance Of Cochlear Implants

  • 1. The Importance Of Cochlear Implants Before the panel discussion, I never took the time to think about how much time and consideration a parent must go through when deciding whether or not they should implant their child with cochlear implants. After watching Sound and Fury, I learned the importance of the Deaf community and their culture and that cochlear implants are not always seen as a good thing. Hearing from the perspective of our guests, and seeing this decision from the eyes of audiologists/teachers of the Deaf, I see that cochlear implantation is anything but an easy decision. Since advancements in technology and evolution of the cochlear implant since its first debut, our guest really opened my eyes to how much harder of a choice this has become for parents of Deaf ... • 2. Puretone Audiogram Shows Hearing Loss Puretone audiogram showed moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss from 250 to 2000 Hz bilaterally. No responses recorded at higher frequencies at the audiometric limit. Speech audiometry showed reduced speech discrimination abilities at high intensities. However, this is consistent with her puretone audiometric results. Tympanometry showed normal tympanometric peak and pressure bilaterally. Absent acoustic reflexes were noted at all test frequencies for both ears. B. Characteristics and limitations of Sue's current hearing aids. One of the first things, perhaps the most important during hearing aids fitting, is to provide appropriate gain for the patient after a thorough hearing assessment. Oticon Intiga RITE (receiver in the ear) is aimed at an immediately comfortable fit and minimal occlusion to thus minimize unnatural sensations. To use an RITE with open fit domes, Sue needs to have good low frequency hearing. Apparently, it cannot provide enough gain Sue needed in the fitting software. It uses smaller (size 10) batteries compared to batteries used by many other miniature hearing aids (size 312 or 13), which could also pose management issues. Intiga 6's modulation based noise management does not allow channel–specific noise reduction, compared to TriState Noise Management. Modulation based noise management assesses the likelihood of rather constant noise in specific frequency regions and tends to be sensitive to the presence of any noise, whether speech is also ... • 3. Cochlear Script Script Question 1: Hearing aids and cochlear implants have different functions to help improve your hearing. You currently have use hearing aids. Hearing aids come in many forms and offer different features. Hearing aids makes the sounds and voices around you louder. Here is a picture of hearing aid that you have. Depending on the hearing aid, the battery and ear piece will vary in size. You mentioned that you have ptosis. A hearing aid may be difficult to operate because the buttons are small and the battery doors are small. One of the benefits of a hearing aid is that you can take them out when every you want and do not need to have surgery. To get a cochlear implant you will need to have surgery. • 4. Benefits Of Cochlear Implants One of the hottest debates between Deaf and Hearing culture lies in the question, "Should I give my deaf child a cochlear implant?" The Deaf people fear that use of cochlear implants will eliminate their culture. A hearing person may believe it will aid their child to learn in mainstream schooling, or they may not want to learn sign language to communicate with their child. As about 90% of hearing parents cannot effectively communicate with their deaf children (Holcomb, n.d., para. 2), the latter is evident. Placed in this situation, I would implant my infant child with a cochlear implant and teach them sign language so they will have the opportunity to have the best of both worlds. Cochlear Implants are small, complex devices that provide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cochlear implants do not provide the high–quality sound of a natural hearing ear. Recently, Professor Michael Dorman of Arizona State University discovered, from one of his patients that had both normal hearing and hearing from a cochlear implant, what cochlear implants sound like. According to audio recordings of his results, a person hearing via a cochlear implant hears speech that is echoed, slightly robotic, and of somewhat lower quality than natural hearing (Griffiths, 2014, para. 7). Nonetheless, the speech presented from the implant was mostly clear and understandable. Since cochlear implants only provide a good, but not outstanding, audio quality and some sounds can be difficult to understand, a deaf child may need to fall back on sign language, which is fully accessible to them (Klaudia, 2013, para. 17). Sign Language will not hinder development, as a study on deaf children in Spain suggests. At the University of Córdoba in Córdoba, Spain, a group of eighteen deaf children with cochlear implants were compared, as some were bilingual (spoken and sign) and some only knew spoken language. The children who were bilingual performed better at verbal fluency (Herruzo, Jimenez, & Pino, 2009, para. 4). In other words, they are able to use a greater number of words in spoken language. Use of sign language would also allow the child to better associate with Deaf ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Sight Vs Hearing The condition of not having the power of hearing or having impaired hearing. Hearing loss. A deaf person has little to no hearing. Hearing loss may occur in one or both ears. Hearing loss can be categorized as mild, moderate, moderate–severe, severe, or profound. Without a newborn hearing test, the average age at which congenital deafness is diagnosed is 2 years. Children whose deafness is treated in the first months of life gain critical time and get far better on development tests than those whose diagnosed is delayed. People can go deaf suddenly as a complication of a virus, lose their hearing over time because of disease, nerve damage, or injury caused by noise. • 6. Hearing Loss and Cochlear Implants Over 360 million people or about five percent of the world population have disabling hearing loss (Deafness). Disabling hearing loss refers to hearing loss greater than 40 decibels for adults and a hearing loss of greater than 30 decibels for children (Deafness). 40 decibels is equivalent to the tune of a refrigerator humming. Although hearing loss can be mild, moderate, severe, or profound –– there are numerous ways of improving the damaged hearing (Deafness). The most common ways are through hearing aids and cochlear implants. Cochlear implants is a type of implanted electronic hearing device; it is designed to produce hearing sensations that are useful to a person with profound nerve deafness Cochlear Implants –€“ Facts). The device is more ideal for people who cannot benefit substantially with the help of hearing aids (Cochlear Implants –€“ Facts). Today, over 219,00 people are using Cochlear Implants (Cochlear Implants, Baylor). The technology used in cochlear implants is more complex and improves hearing and communication skills drastically. Despite cochlear implants having many disadvantages, there are more benefits that will help towards improving hearing loss. The research of hearing loss first started in 1950 (Cochlear Implants –€“ Facts). It was discovered that hearing could be obtained by directly inserting an array of electrodes into the cochlea of a patient with profound deafness. It took another 30 years of research before the implant was commercially ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Importance Of The Cochlear Implants The cochlear implant is quite possibly one of the greatest ideas invented to benefit the deaf community. American Sign Language (ASL) has been the main way the deaf communicate and is extremely important to the deaf culture. To those that can hear, being deaf or profoundly hard of hearing has been considered a handicap. It was for that reason that someone invented the cochlear implant, causing a huge debate within the deaf community. Some of those in the deaf community fear that their culture will be lost and destroyed, while others and the hearing community believe that it will better their lives. Most do not realize that this procedure is not a cure and that it will leave those with the implants confused as to where they belong in society. There are quite a few who believe the cochlear implants work just like the hearing aid, only implanted in their head. However, there are significant differences between the two. Cochlear implants do not restore normal hearing, whereas the use of hearing aids can bring it close to normal. Hearing aids send amplified sound to the damaged cochlea, and can be programmed to shape amplification of sound to match the hearing loss. Hearing aids are very limited in their ability to aid severe and profound hearing loss beyond environmental sound and vowels in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cochlear implants are made up of four different parts: microphone, speech processor, transmitter & receiver/stimulator, and the electrode array. The microphone picks up sounds from the environment. • 9. Cochlear Implant History A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that does the work of the damaged parts of the cochlea, which is the inner ear, to provide sound signals to the brain. Cochlear implants were a major breakthrough in history. There was now a way for people, who have had little or no benefit from hearing aids, to receive sound. The cochlear implant, which was sometimes called a "Bionic Ear" could help some people to hear again. In 1972 the first single channel cochlear implant was introduced. This provided many deaf people with better lip reading enhancement. In 1984, a multi–channel cochlear implant was introduced. The difference between the single channel and multi–channel implant system was that the single channel system only delivered sound ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The speech processor is like a computer, it is usually with the microphone behind the ear. The speech processor analyzes the sound and sends it to the transmitter. The transmitter is worn on the head just behind the ear, it sends coded signals to the implanted receiver just under the skin. The receiver takes the coded electrical signals from the transmitter and takes them to the electrodes which have been surgically implanted in the cochlea. These electrodes then stimulate the auditory nerve and the sensation of sound in recognized. Cochlear implants help provide a sense of sound to an individual who is deaf or hard of hearing. They can help individuals who have hearing loss in both ears or in only one ear. The benefits from a cochlear implant vary depending on whether the individual had hearing loss before or after developing language, the individual's age, or the motivation of the individual. Cochlear implants do not restore normal hearing, but they can help a deaf individual to have an 3 effective representation of sound and help the individual understand speech. Most of the time, individuals tend to hear better with time and practice. Some individuals have benefitted from cochlear implants and some have not. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Cochlear Australia And New Zealand Cochlear Australia and New Zealand is a company that specializes in electronic medical devices that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Cochlear Australia and New Zealand developed a short film entitled "Does Love Last Forever?", which premiered in Australian theaters to attendees of the movie Lion and eventually became a viral sensation. The film follows the story of a couple's relationship from its early stages through to middle age and retirement, and asks the audience at the end whether the couple remained happy and in love. In actuality, the film was disguised as a hearing test and used camera angles, misleading body language, background noises to help determine the viewer's hearing ability. Those that experience hearing loss rely more heavily on techniques like watching body language, or lip reading, and removing the ability to do so while watching the film helps the viewer interpret its own ending. Thus, those that could not hear the dialogue would conclude love did not last, while those that could hear the conversation would determine that love did last. Cochlear's campaign uses spin tactics such as emotional manipulation and deception to create a purchaser demand for their products. They specifically use the tactic of fearmongering, or deliberately arousing public fear about an issue, to make the audience believe they may need a hearing aid. The film is deliberately made to be difficult to hear regardless of your hearing capabilities to create anxiety, drawing upon Edward Bernays' tactic of swinging emotional currents as to create a higher purchaser demand (Bernays 54). This film is also spun to appear as a public service announcement, where the primary focus of the campaign is to selflessly help the audience. The video hides the fact that it is created by a company who would monetarily benefit from an increased rate of hearing loss. The spin used in this video was successful because it effectively tricks the viewer into thinking they were experiencing hearing loss. In addition to carefully timed camera angles, the video allows the audience to see themselves and their relationships through the couple and the focus on them makes them less likely to suspect they are victims of spin. • 11. The Pros And Cons Of Cochlear Implants Cochlear Implants are an object that is very controversial in the deaf community. "A Cochlear Implants is a device that provdes direct electrical stimulation to the auditory (hearing) nerve in the inner ear." ("Cochlear Implants") Cochlear Implants bypass the damaged hair cells, and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. Depending on when the Cochlear Implant is implanted it allows people to hear sounds, and sometimes even their own voice. While it does not cure hearing loss or deafness, it does allow people to hear. On more technical terms a Cochlear Implant includes parts like a microphone, speech processor, and a transmitter which each play a different part in the Cochlear Implant. The microphone picks up sounds, sends them to the speech processer, and then the speech processor analyzes and digitized the sound signal, thus sending them to a transmitter worn on the head. The debate of whether or not Cochlear Implants are right in the deaf community is one that has been going on for years. People believe having Cochlear Implants are a good thing, because they allow deaf people to communicate with hearing people, it allows people who are not helped by conventional hearing aids to be helped, and it creates new possibilities for deaf people. However there are also people that argue that having a Cochlear Implant is a bad thing, because it proposes the idea that deaf people need to be fixed, it can give deaf people false hope, and it proposes the idea that deaf people have a ... She was referred to an audiologist. Hello, Mrs. Mayer I'm Dr. Howard an audiologist for Renown. I can see from your chart that you were referred here because you were having problems with some hearing loss, ringing in your ears and dizziness? Are you still having these issues? So the hearing loss and ringing is only in your left ear. How long has this been going on? Okay so you have had these symptoms for about a month. Let's go ahead and check your ears. I'm just going to look in your ears with this instrument called an otoscope; it has a light on it so I will be able to see inside your ear. Mrs. Mayer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mayer's I have the results of your test back the MRT and hearing test. The MRT showed a small benign tumor in your left ear along your 8th cranial nerve. This nerve is also called your acoustic nerve this nerve sends signals for hearing. This tumor is what is known as acoustic neuroma. This tumor is benign or not cancer, so it cannot spread to other parts of your body. It can however get larger and press on other nerves, and cause you more issues, like facial numbness, changes in taste, difficulty swallowing and other issues. It is the cause of the hearing loss in your left ear along with the dizziness and tinnitus or ringing in your ears. Because the tumor is around 2.5 cm you will need to have the tumor removed. Unfortunately, your hearing loss and tinnitus may be permanent, but you can get a hearing aid to help amplify sounds, and there are some medications that can help with the tinnitus. Although, your tinnitus and hearing loss may improve it could take weeks or even years to see results after the tumor is removed. I have spoken with the neurosurgeon that can do your surgery, we agreed that the best approach is stereotactic radiosurgery or gamma knife, it is a non– surgical approach. It would use precise, targeted radiation beams to kill the tumor. This treatment would avoid or minimize the chances of damaging important nerves that are responsible for balance, hearing, and facial responses. The other option we spoke about is surgical removal or Retro– sigmoid/sub–occipital in which a small part of your back skull is removed near the back of your head, and this procedure also offers the possibility of preserving your hearing. I know that this is not easy information to hear and recommend that you find a support group. Or someone you can talk to like a family member or a friend. I will schedule you for a consolation with the surgeon; he will be able to tell you more about the different surgery options. Then a follow up appointment will be set up for ... • 14. Cochlear Implants Research Paper According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, "About 2 to 3 out of every 1,000 children in the United States are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears." Cochlear Implants are mechanical devices that are highly promoted by the hearing society to "cure" deafness. Despite the fact Cochlear Implants can be effective, the risk of serious physical and emotional harm to a patient outweighs the chances of its success. A cochlear implant is an electronic device inserted under the skin and behind the ear to cure severe hearing loss. What isn't understood by most is that the people who are making the decision to get the implant are usually not the ones going under the knife. Most hearing ... "What brings you here today sir?" the receptionist said. "An appointment with the Audiologist" he replied. About fifteen minutes later, a lady came out from a big side door. "Mr. Thomas Moore" she called. He got up and followed her into the clinic. She led him to a smaller room split into two sections. One side had a chair and desk with several machines on it. The other side was a booth with a window, which could only be entered through a thick door. Dr. Stacy led Thomas into the booth and sat him down. A Speech Pathologist would not be needed, as it is a hearing, rather than speech–communication problem. Dr. Stacy's recommendations for Thomas would to first and foremost attempt to correct the problem with behind–the–ear hearing aids since he is prone to earwax build–up. A traditional behind–the–ear (BTE) hearing would be his best fit. Not only would they aid in amplification, but they might also help to solve the tension in the household. Thomas would be able to use them every day, whether he is at home or not. If BTE hearing aids ended up as an inappropriate or comfortable choice for Thomas, she would then recommend an Assisted Listening Device (ALD), such as a personal amplifier. This would reduce background noise and increase the sound levels. Dr. Stacy could also recommend an infrared ALD system in conjunction with his hearing aids for use such as in a restaurant. In the aural rehabilitation plan for Thomas, Dr. Stacy will evaluate him to ensure his hearing aids are the most appropriate fit. • 17. A Brief Note On The Deaf Culture And Hearing People When a child or an adult who is deaf, there are many options one can take to fix their hearing if they want to. They have the options of hearing aid, cochlear implants, an auditory brainstem implant, an auditory midbrain implant, or use ASL. The cochlear implant is a very controversial topic between the Deaf culture and hearing people. Deciding whether or not to receive the implant and be involved in the Deaf culture is a very hard decision for someone to make because of the benefits but also the complications that could happen after the surgery. My original opinion about the implant was neutral because if I got asked what I would do if my child was born deaf, I would not know what to do because I did not have enough information about the cochlear implant. However now, I feel that I have learned more about the implant and think that an implant and still be exposed to Deaf culture is the best way to go. So my original opinions I felt wishy washy about the topic. I understood both sides of the argument, but I did not know what I would do. Getting the implant provides many opportunities for the person, but then their deaf identity is not really in their life anymore because the person needs to focus on speaking to learn English. So I did not know what I would do if I was put in that situation. Throughout this class, I have gained more knowledge about the two sides and it has helped me get a better understanding of what I would do if I had a child born profoundly deaf or I ... • 20. The Importance Of Deaf Education Whether someone responds to a person knocking on a door, a car honking down the street, or speakers blasting loud music, our hearing plays a significant role in providing us with vital information. Hence, hearing is an important sense, and "the significance of hearing often goes underappreciated until it is no longer available" (Saint Joseph's University, 2017). In spite of that, research proves that children who experience hearing loss must have opportunities to enjoy a quality of life that does not remind them of their disabilities, but experience a quality of life that makes necessary modifications to augment their abilities. It is fair to state that Deaf education evolved over a course of centuries, with Pedro Ponce de Leon making history as a pioneer teacher for students who were deaf. As a 16th–century Spanish monk, Ponce de Leon received recognition for revolutionizing the education of children by creating "one of the original manual alphabets" (Saint Joseph's University, 2017) for speaking and fingerspelling. Concurrently, Geronimo Cardano joined the movement for Deaf education in 1550 by disclosing that hearing loss should not deny people opportunities to learn (Saint Joseph's University, 2017). With significant gains from Ponce de Leon's innovative system for communication, along with Cardano's experience as a father of a son who had a hearing disability, both individuals established themselves as credible sources–proving that children are capable of learning by ... Clec was from the Paris Institution for the Deaf and had been deaf since infancy. He bought to the United States a nonverbal form of communication known as French sign language (Halpern, C., 1996). The technique that Clerc taught was by the use of his hands, which he communicated with French sign language, blended with a bit of signs used by students in the United States. To Gallaudet the language was a inspiration which he called it, "Highly poetical" (Weta and Florentine films/Hott productions Inc., 2007), but to Clerc and many of the deaf people, the using of sign was natural and useful. This was a result of a created acculturated nonverbal language known as American Sign Language (ASL). There are some people in the world that are living without one or both of these senses. In some circumstances, these two senses are able to be given to somebody who hasn't had them before. There are many different procedures and ways for a person to either gain their eyesight or hearing again, for the first time in their life. In terms of hearing, there is a procedure that is booming popularity all over the world. Along with having the surgery, the patient then wears a device called a cochlear implant. Cochlear Implants are changing the world of hearing so that people who receive them are able to gain hearing ability to sounds around them. This partially unknown medical procedure is gaining more attention around the world with its high success rates and its ability to change peoples lives forever. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders Website, a cochlear implant is defined as a "small, complex electronic device that can help provide a sense of sound to someone who is profoundly deaf or severely hard–of–hearing." The first cochlear implant demonstration was in Paris in the 1950's done by André Djourno and Charles Eryiés. • 24. The Problem Of Deaf Culture Deaf culture is a way to start this essay. Most people, when they think of deafness, assume that it is nothing more than a disability. This is erroneous because defining what deaf really means, means looking past the definition and looking into the heart of a deaf person, to see equality among us all. Equality among humans isn 't controversial, but what is? Cochlear Implantation is controversial. Inserting an internal disruption of the deaf culture is controversial. Placing an electronic device in your children 's ears because you want them to talk like a normal child is controversial. After having a very rigorous debate about CI 's in my ASL class, I came to the conclusion that out of 30 students, more than half of them would choose implantation of their young fragile, pure child. Being deaf is way more than just being able to hear, being deaf is a gift; a family within a family, and implanting a child a child under your circumstances only shreds the wrapping paper off that gift. Lets jump right into the positive facts of cochlear implants, because there isn 't many. in a very descriptive and informational article by Ron Kotulak, he mentions that, "The implant significantly improve the hearing of adults in conjunction with speech –reading. Benefits have also been observed in children as young as two." For example, there are two main types of hearing loss, these are pre lingual deafness and post lingual deafness. These can then be broken down into physical, psychosocial and spiritual aspects. For the purpose of this work, I am going to explore the physical aspects of deafness. Many people just assume that the main problem with having a hearing impairment is that it is hard to understand speech and the consequent isolation from the rest of the noise–producing world. However, pre lingual deafness is defined as someone who has been completely deaf from birth so therefore gives rise to expressive problems in both speech and language (Syder 1992). A post lingual deaf person is someone who has lost there hearing suddenly or gradually and the loss can be partial or total (Syder 1992). One fifth of the countries population suffers some sort of hearing loss (Martin and Grover 1986). This covers a wide range of problems from minor difficulties to complete loss. Not recognising a hearing problem could result in patients/clients becoming withdrawn, isolated and excluded from people around them. Chalfont suggests that deafness was the loneliest disability as it isolates them from the rest of the community (Chalfont 1986).

For starters, a forced cochlear implant would be seen disrespectful to the family's ability to make their own decisions. As such, one of the major factors of the cochlear implant is the decision– making process that accompanies it; this concept is necessary in order for a family to conclude on whether or not they wish their child to have a cochlear implant. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since a forced cochlear implant would introduce the child into the hearing culture, this decision would limit the child's opportunity to explore and learn more about the Deaf culture. One such example demonstrates this by showcasing a video containing an interview with the hearing parents of a deaf girl who has a cochlear implant; in this video, the parents stated that the reason why they chose to have their daughter receive the cochlear implant, who was at the age of three and a half, was because the child was struggling with her deafness and that the cochlear implant was the only solution that would fix the issue ("Cochlear Implants – A Cultural Threat", n.d.). The main issue here was that the parents believed that the only way their daughter would have a happy life was to use the cochlear implant; there was little consideration given to alternative methods, primarily because she was at a young age. If a forced cochlear implant were to be given to all Deaf children early on in their lives, they would be given no choice but to accept the hearing culture; although they could have functioned well in the Deaf culture, the culture that they were born in, the mandatory cochlear implant forces them into a culture that opposes their ... The oral method relies on lip reading, mainstream schools, and nowadays, cochlear implants or hearing aids. The manual method relies on sign language, residential schools, and accepting Deafness as a culture worth nurturing. Both methods have their strong suits. Both have their weak points. But first, a vocabulary lesson. The word 'deaf' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a linguistic minority that is worth exploring, with a rich and vibrant language. This language shapes the community. Daniel S. Koo, a member of this community explains that, "'ASL exposes children to the world's knowledge," he says, "and it incorporates self–esteem and aspects of deaf culture'" (Bollag 1). Unlike with Julia, Deaf students who are placed in schools for the deaf, which use sign language as the primary language during classes, Deaf children do not feel isolated or weird for their inability to hear. Instead of reaching out to other isolated kids, they walk through their schools making effortless friendships and learning just as hearing kids do. The only difference? The language they use. Before ASL was accepted as an official language in these schools, many educators and school prohibited signing and, "students had to wear mittens or sit on their hands as a punishment for signing. Other schools used more severe reprimands" (Oral 1). Because of this history, the modern community strives to create an environment of open communication, where the stories that are told to friends could be seen as oversharing to hearing people unused to Deaf culture. But this environment creates a close–knit community where everyone seems to know everyone. Some parents, aware of this closeness, opt to learn ASL themselves and immerse themselves into the Deaf community to be a part of their child's source of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Is A Cure For Deafness Imagine a life without hearing, waking up everyday in silence. Would you embrace your deafness, have a hearing aid, or have a cochlear implant? Surely, all of these options are personal preferences; however, one is better than the others: the cochlear implant operation, in a way, is a cure for deafness. Having an opportunity to fully hear in both of your ears can open many gateways into your life; the troubles of finding a school, a job, and doing basic things such as listening to music or driving a car would be made easier. The cochlea is the auditory portion in your inner ear, usually identified as a spiral like a snail shell. The cochlear implant contains two parts: the inner and outer. The inner part, also known as the receiver, is where the surgery comes into play. The receiver is placed under the skin above your ear where the surgeon carves a little part of the skull out for the magnet to lay in. The outer part, also known as the processor, is worn on the ear and connects to the magnet in your skull. The processor analyzes sound, sends it to the receiver inside your skull, which sends electrodes to the auditory nerves (Chorost). Therefore, it would be very hard to lose the cochlear implant whereas a hearing aid is very easy to lose. The hearing aid can be uncomfortable to wear all the time, the batteries die quickly, and you can not get it wet. The cochlear implant can have some discomfort such as a headache, and a stiff neck that lasts for a few days after the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. What Speech Sounds Do You Expect That This Child Will Have... 1. What speech sounds do you expect that this child will have difficulty perceiving? Left ear difficulty perceiving: p, k, f, s, th Right ear difficulty perceiving: j, m, n, ng, z, d, v, b, o, I, a, r, p, ch, h, sh, g, k, f, s, th 2. Do you think that the child will have more difficulty with the vowels or the consonants and why? I think that Julie will have more difficulty with the consonants because they are mostly found in higher pitch areas of the speech banana. They also are softer being found on the lower decibel range. Both of these areas are difficult areas for Julie to perceive those speech sounds. 3. Do you think that the home situation of the child has much influence on the child 's speech abilities and if so, how has this child 's family influenced her speech abilities, based on what you know about them? Family involvement and influence is one of the top reasons for a child to either struggle or excel with language and communication. From what I read there is a lack of support in the home. This is mostly because of the age and condition of the hearing aids. It is frequently found that a child with mild to moderate hearing loss such as Julie, can struggle even more than a child with severe to profound hearing loss. This is because a child with mild to moderate hearing loss is denied assistance or lacks proper diagnosis due to their ability to understand some of the time. In Julie 's case it is possible that the low IQ diagnosis was daunting to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. For Hearing People Only 1. What do you think of speech reading or lip reading? What are your thoughts on this topic? Do all deaf people know how?I think that speech or lip reading is something that should never be expected out of anyone, deaf or hearing. I do not think that a person's mouth can be understood without sound coming out of it. There are too many different ways of saying things; lip shapes are different; lip movements are different; people enunciate words differently therefore causing different facial movements. I would personally never approach someone with the question of "Can you read my lips?" Deaf people are not lip readers but some could be considered as speech readers, that of which they are looking at all facial expressions and body movements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now that I am taking this ASL class, I have been better educated with many different aspects of Deaf culture and the Deaf community. However, if you are in the media world I do believe that they should know better since they are more exposed to all kinds of different cultures. Hopefully, with time and better education of society in general, the offensive words will gradually fade away.4. What are advantages and disadvantages of deaf people using hearing aids or cochlear implants? What are your thoughts on both of these devices? The advantage of hearing aids is that they can pick up some sounds which make a deaf person feel more aware of what is going on. There are digital aids that can be programmed to pick up the frequencies of speech but these are designed for users with moderate deafness. The disadvantage of hearing (digital) aids is that severely or profoundly deaf people do not benefit from digital aids. Others feel that they are uncomfortable and they do not like wearing them.Hearing aids have been accepted as part of the Deaf culture because they are removable and they do not involve invasive surgery. The advantage of having a cochlear implant would be that is allows the recipient to hear a wider variety of sounds and possibly develop better speech patterns however, it is unknown what the long–range effects of this device may do to the tissue and nerves of ... • 39. Case Study On Hearing Aid COMPARITIVE RESEARCH STUDY OF FUNCTIONAL OUTCOMES WITH ADIP AND NON ADIP DIGITAL HEARING AID Introduction: Electronic hearing aids have undergone recent technological changes.(Dillon, 2001; Valente, 2002a).Digital technology has brought to the hearing aid industry is that of digital signal–processing features such as more number of channel and band, multi memory HA(Chung, 2004a, 2004b). These features can offer advantages in many difficult listening situations, but the scientific evidence that they produce a significant increase in the satisfaction of hearing aid users is still fairly weak (Wong et al2003). It is also clear that modern hearing aids and fitting rationales do not adequately address some of the most fundamental requirements of hearing aid users. Kochkin (2002)reports that 83% of HA users would like to hear more soft sounds, and 81% find loud sounds uncomfortable. As increase in number channels and band costmore money. Most modern hearing aid manufacturers offer products at multiple technology levels.
