Protection of Life – A Review
The Catholic bishops have come out strongly against the government’s
proposed Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill 2013 saying if
approved, it will make “the direct and intentional killing of unborn
children” lawful in Ireland.“The Bill as outlined represents a dramatic
and morally unacceptable change to Irish law and is unnecessary to
ensure that women receive the life-saving treatment they need during
pregnancy.”
The Gospel of Life is at the heart of the message of Jesus, said the
bishops. The deliberate decision to deprive an innocent human being of
life is “always morally wrong”. “We uphold the right to life as the
foundation of every other human right.”The bishops called on people
who share these beliefs to “make them clear to their legislators”.
Turning to the issue which has caused most division in the bill, that
abortion can be a treatment for suicidal ideation, the bishops insist that
abortion is never a remedy for suicidal ideation “and therefore should
never be cited as a justification for the direct killing of an innocent
human being”. They go on: “It is a tragic moment for Irish society
when we regard the deliberate destruction of a completely innocent
person as an acceptable response to the threat of the preventable death
of another person.”
Today, we are called to stand up for life. Contact your government
representative and express your view for life. We should never let a
culture of death enter our country.
The fact is that nothing earthly can fill the void in the human heart
