Reflection
Next weekend we journey to the Holy Well for Garland Weekend. This year
the theme for the weekend is remembering Penal Ireland. We are called to
give thanks for our ancestors who persevered in the faith sometimes against
impossible odds. When Catholics were forbidden to practise their faith they
gathered in the early morning at such places as Tobernalt, waiting for the
priest to emerge from the crowd to celebrate the Sacraments in the quiet
seclusion and isolation ofthe Holy Well.
Today, for many reasons our Church faces a different oppression. Indeed,
Christians throughout the world are persecuted for their faith. Yet against
impossible odds people are standing up for Jesus in actions, words and deeds.
We too are called over this weekend to renewour faith and to declare Jesus as
our leader by our words and actions. Let us honour the people ofPenal
Ireland.

A Camino from St Anne’s Church to the Holy Well will take place on
Sunday 28th July beginning at 4.45am to arrive at the Holy Well for 6.00am
Mass. This walk recalls our ancestors in Penal Ireland who walked to the
Holy Well in fear of their lives to honour the Mass and celebrate the various
Sacraments. Everyone can join in the walk and recall this sacred and precious part of
our history out of respect for our ancestors.
Traffic at the Holy Well for Garland Weekend
Please remember that a one-way system of traffic will operate at the Holy Well for the
Garland Weekend. Please follow the direction of the Gardaí and Parish Stewarts who
will be on duty. This system will help with the organisation of traffic flow and parking.
It will also help with the smooth departure of traffic after Mass.
