1. In my A2 year one of the production ancillary tasks I was set was to create a billboard
advertising my own newspaper.
My Ancillary one task was set to create a billboard for a newspaper based on my research
tasks and by analysing three examples of newspaper advertising billboards. When planning
what to include on my billboard I studied Nick Lacey’s repertoire of elements. Being a
newspaper billboard when deciding what to include in my Design and layout-
Fonts/Colour scheme/ written style I chose to follow traditional conventions of content
following Chandlers theory stating ‘Conventional definitions of genres tend to be based on
the notion that they constitute particular conventions of content ‘. This is shown in my
ancillary 1 by creating a conventional simplistic black and white masthead, using a simplistic
san serif font, Charlemagne Std.
I have also clearly stated the cheap price of the newspaper on my billboard following the
friendly prices of competing newspaper for example The Sun also 40p. Also relating to
Lacey’s Technical and audio codes and Chandlers repetition of conventions. Most
newspaper billboards are printed black and white to show the black and white house style
of the newspaper. However I have coloured my price title in red to stand out against the
white background and black bold font. Decorated by a floral grey shape to make the price
more attractive.
The use of the word ‘delivering’ stated relating to two meanings firstly the physical act
transporting the newspapers to the reader’s local shop but also metaphorically as the
journalist is delivering the news through the text. Relating to conventional newspaper
wording. Also by mentioning the Towns name ‘Manchester’ shows where the local newspaper is
delivered and informs the reader the content of the news paper will refer to events in Manchester.
Iconography, another element included in Lacey’srepertoire highlights the iconic features
allowing an audience to identify the product to be a newspaper. This is shown in my
billboard by the masthead ‘The Source’ the name itself is icon to the newspaper genre. The
definite adjective ‘The’ is a conventional name for a newspaper e,g The Sun, The Daily Mail.
However the name ‘Source’ is current and contemporary contrasting to ‘Daily Mail’ and
‘Independent’. This relates to Neale’s theory that states ‘instances of repetition and
difference to conventional method’. ‘The’ referring to repetition and ‘Source’ representing
2. the difference to traditional newspaper methods. Also relating to Neale’s mental machinery
allowing the masthead and cheap price to appeal to the older and younger audience.
In my A2 year another production ancillary tasks I was set was to create a radio
advertisement for my newspaper.
Firstly I developed a situation where the newspaper could be mentioned in order to
advertise in day to day life but also in a comical way. I chose to plan a discussion between a
young doctor and an elderly lady finding it hard to cope with the overwhelming news
provided by the newspaper. Neale’s mental machinery assisted me deciding on two
characters for my advertisement. An elderly lady, appealing to the elderly generation who
like to read up on current affairs. The young doctor represents the younger generation but
also the higher class due to his perfection, allowing the newspaper to appeal to a wider
audience.
During the advertisement the elderly patient states all the conventional content the
newspaper contains.
‘I was up until 11 o’clock last night reading up on health, food, home and luxury travel articles.’
‘exciting crime section then there’s all the useful business and personal financing tips’
Including these traditional content conventions of a newspaper to my advertisement allows my work
to relate to Chandlers conventions of content theory.
The situation of the doctor meeting with his patient is also relevant to the name of the
newspaper ‘The Source’ as metaphorically the doctor is trying to investigate the source to
the patient’s excitement. Metaphorically the source to her concern is ‘The Source’
newspaper. These unique plays on words reflect relating to Neale’s instances of differences
to other newspapers. The fast paste cheerful narrating voice appeals to the audience at the
end ,providing he audience with details of when and where the newspaper is available also
follows traditional conventions of radio advertisements as an average advertisement is no
longer than 45 seconds.
