Effects Of Social Media On Self-Esteem And Self Esteem
Abstract
Social media is the main source of today's entertainment. Research suggests that it could be
influencing our behaviours and self–esteems, there are studies on people with lower self–esteems
and higher self–esteems and how social media influences these (Charles Steinfield, 2008).
The aim of this study is to explore the themes on how social media can cause or may influence self–
esteem levels. Three participants took place in this study from Northumbria University in the North
East of England. The age range was from 18–19 and they were a mixture of men and women, this
ensured that participants weren't all of the same gender and gave us a fair set of results. However,
this only gives us a certain amount of validity due to the results only being from people at
Northumbria University who were aged 18–19 and this cannot account for others for example those
over the age of 19 who are not students. A thematic analysis showed our running themes throughout
the three interviews that showed social media influencing their self–esteem, these were that 'Self–
portrayal' and 'Achievements'. There were similar trends found throughout all three interviews, and
these were that all three participants spent at least up to 2 hours on social media a day. Another trend
is that all three students don't post frequently but when they do it is for attention. Findings have been
discussed with previous literatures thought about suggests that influences of self–portrayal and

Low Self Esteem
In modern society, the new rise of depression can be traced to low self–esteem. Low self–esteem is
prevalent in females and is often a big concern for parents as their daughters enter their teenage
years. It has now become the norm for a parent to question the mental stability of their daughter.
The concern continues to escalate as the impacts of low self–esteem, such as changes in mood,
struggle with social skills and intrapersonal conflict, are seen as significant and possibly detrimental
in adulthood.
Self–esteem begins to develop from the moment we are conscious of ourselves, our surroundings,
and the people around us. Self–esteem determines how a person lives – how they talk, handle
relationships, choose career paths and create lifestyles ("Self Esteem" Eating Disorders). It is easy to
see that self–esteem has a lot of leverage on the quality of life that an individual could have. As
self–esteem continues to decline in girls and women, the effects are coming to light more and more.
Changes in mood and personality are often the most common effect of low self–esteem. Many
parents are often worried about a change of mood in their daughter's mental stability. Low self
esteem has been associated with anxiety, stress, loneliness and an increased likelihood of depression
("Self–Esteem" Utexas). The impact on mood and personality often makes an individual
unapproachable, which is ironic, considering the fact that many people with low self esteem crave
attention and affection.

The Effect Of Self Esteem
Effects of self–esteem
What is self–esteem?
Self–esteem is confidence in one's own worth or abilities and self–respect. Self–esteem is how a
person feels about his or herself. A person's self–esteem can be high, low, or in between. Someone
with high self–esteem might be more confident in seeking out new friendships. However, someone
with low self–esteem may not even try to have a social life because they tend to feel worthless. If a
person self esteem is in between they are very observant to everything. Self–esteem can affect ones
mood, health, relationships, comfort zones, and low resilience. Importance of valuing yourself
According to "person to person" the self can be broken down into physical self, mental self,
emotional self, and social self. Physical self is more than just your appearance. People who neglect
their own needs and forget to nurture themselves are at danger of deeper levels of unhappiness, low
self–esteem, and feelings of resentment. Also, sometimes people who spend their time only taking
care of others can be at risk for getting burned out on all the giving, which makes it more difficult to
care for others or themselves. Taking time to care for yourself regularly can make you a better
caretaker for others. Mental health is a level of psychological wellbeing, or an absence of mental
illness. It is the "psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of
emotional and behavioral adjustment". Mental self is performed

A Reflection On Self Esteem
Self–esteem is a term used to describe how a person judges themselves in terms of being valued,
accepted and worthy. This evaluation of one's self is extremely important as a child moves through
each stage of development. It can determine a child's future success or failure. A positive self–
esteem allows one to make gains in achievement through hard work and effort. They are prone to
accepting new challenges and working hard to attain a goal. If they fail, they learn from their
mistakes and form new strategies to make improvements. A negative self–esteem allows one to set
themselves up for failure: not believing that they can successfully achieve a goal if they exert more
effort. It is important for parents and teachers to encourage a ... Show more content on

Although Chinese and Japanese students are higher academic achievers, their self–esteem is lower
compared to U.S. students (Harter, 2006; Hawkins, 1994; Twenge & Crocker, 2002). This is in part
due to cultural values. Asians believe that it is more important to praise and encourage others rather
than placing emphasis on themselves (Fablo et al.,1997). The African–American culture values
close family ties, community support and strong ethnic pride. Because these values encourage a
sense of belonging, children of this ethnic group have a higher self–esteem compared to their
Caucasian counterparts (Gray–Little & Carels, 1997).
Gender–stereotyping plays a role in self–esteem. For example, girls tend to absorb society's message
of certain a physical appearance. If one does not possess those physical traits, they become
dissatisfied with themselves and their self–esteem declines (Dohnt & Tiggemann, 2006). Gender–
stereotyping is used on the academic competency level. Girls remain strong in language arts self–
esteem while boys have a stronger math, science, and physical/athletic self–esteem (Fredericks &
Eccles, 2002; Jacobs et al., 2002; Kurtz–Costes et al., 2008). Girls also excelled in self–esteem in
social competencies (Marsh & Ayotte, 2003; Young & Mroczek, 2003).
Parenting practices is another influence on self–esteem. It can set the stage for high achievement or
failure. One type of parenting practice uses the authoritative style. These

Self–Esteem over Logic and Beliefs
Columbia College, Missouri
Abstract
Self–Esteem gives a person the right to value themselves. Our self–esteem sometimes overpowers
our logic, and can lead us to act in ways that are not always our own. This paper examines how the
following theories; Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, Self– Evaluation Maintenance Theory, Self–
Affirmation Theory, Rationalization Trap and Self–Discrepancy Theory impact a person's self–
esteem decisions. Where people in different cases come to realize that the choices they have made
overpower their superior perfect logic, they have to deal with the consequences that come along
with the choices they have made.

This clearly shows how elements of life depend on the type of knowledge and wisdom used. When
we use this knowledge and wisdom, we can better the strategies we have so that we can achieve
more. It should also be stated that individuals have different ways of looking at conflicts or
situations. Because of this vast difference, the way they accomplish tasks differs as well. Note that
when someone does not carry out his strategies well, they are bound to fail.
Theory of Cognitive Dissonance Cognitive dissonance can be defined as "a feeling of discomfort
caused by performing an action that runs counter to one's customary (typically positive) conception
of oneself" (Aronson, Wilson & Akert, 2010). The body's natural way of keeping one's self–
esteem high is to counteract that by either changing our actions or to talk ourselves into believing
that what we have done was the right thing to do in the moment (2010). For example, a female
student chooses to take a job stripping in a night club after spending three months looking for a job.
She struggles with this decision mentally because she was raised in a strict, religious household. Her
up–bringing and the need to pay tuition become two points that challenge her positive self–esteem.
The female student will make concessions to her beliefs to keep her self–esteem high saying things

You or Society? "It's not what you are that is holding you back. It's what you think you are not".
Before self esteem was believed to be a necessity to one's happiness, the concept seemingly held
little to no value to practically anyone. In the past, society didn't have the time or the want to focus
on something as miniscule as self esteem while, there was much more to worry about such as
appearances. Today however, self esteem is a key aspect to being truly contempt and successful with
the life we have all been given, aiding in the advancement of not only our individual lives but, what
we could do to help further society as a whole. To begin with, the origin of self esteem it's self has
been a huge topic of discussion throughout nations. Dating all the way back to the 1960s, a book by
the name of "The Optimistic Child Professor" by Martin Seligman mentions ways in which self
esteem has a direct correlation to "feeling good". Martin Seligman held the belief that exercises that
forcefully try to increase your self esteem through another will only result in those people drawing
closer to depression. Then came the 1980s and this was when a man by the name of John
Vasconcellos convinced people to believe that low self–esteem was directly provoking crimes and
other offenses such as teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, and underachievement in terms of education.
In the 1990s, Roy Baumeister believed that curing low self esteem issues was a completely incorrect

Self Esteem And Self-Esteem
Self–esteem, also known as self–respect, is the confidence in one's worth or abilities. Low self–
esteem is the opposite or lack of confidence in one's own worth. Self–esteem is shaped throughout
one's life, it will increase and decrease throughout life but with essentially remain at the same level.
Self–esteem has both positive and negative affects depending on if an individual has low or high
self–esteem. There is more research on the effects of low self–esteem because it usually has to most
negative effects on someone's health. Self–respect can also influence one's decision making, people
with low self–esteem generally make poor or unwise decisions due to lack of confidence. Bullying
can be caused by low self–esteem or causes the development of low self–esteem. Someone who
does not have high levels of self–confidence may try and belittle others to feel better about
themselves; being bullied can in turn cause someone to feel bad about themselves, therefore,
causing low self–esteem. Ultimately, low self–esteem has been known to negatively affect
someone's health, it can cause anxiety, depression, or lead to drug usage. Self–esteem has been
studied for decades, by focusing on the development, self–imagery, effect on decision making,
bullying, and the negative effects that follow the high or low levels of self–esteem we are able to
unravel how self–esteem effects our lives and how we can change our own self–esteem. In a

Self Esteem And Self Image
Rationale: Over the last three weeks, the Purple Group has been making great strides in building
rapport and group members have been opening up about their personal conflicts, anxieties and
insecurities. I have felt touched that others have disclosed such heartfelt and gut wrenching personal
histories and at times, I have been almost moved to tears. While we have had many positive
experiences and discussed many positive aspects in our lives within the last three groups, I can 't
help but think about the negative and emotional experiences. It is because of this that I want to
spend an hour discussing issues relating to self–esteem and self–image. I would like to consciously
bring some well needed positivity to the group. Additionally, over the last week I have been working
on a paper with which I need to take a nonfictional person [Elliott Smith] and create a
biopsychosocial, diagnostic and clinical assessments and apply counseling theory approaches to that
individual 's life. In fact. I will be using one of his songs to demonstrate examples of low self–

Importance of Self-Esteem
Self– esteem is an important part of life. Without strong self–esteem we are not at our full potential.
We need strong self–esteem to have the confidence to do many tasks. The way others perceive us
has an effect on our self–esteem as well as how we perceive ourselves. In order to have good self–
esteem, we need others to be encouraging and communicate in a positive way. We also need to build
our own self–esteem by realizing we need to be our self, not what others necessarily think we
should be. Negativity from others only lowers our self–esteem and makes us less confident. We
need confidence in order to communicate well with others.
As I ponder on my self–esteem, I feel I am very confident in most areas but really lacking in others.

Importance Of Self Esteem
Importance of Self–Esteem
Self–esteem has been a major factor in people's daily lives including their routine. Without realizing
the impact self esteem has on us, we have certain levels of it and we depend on it daily to do tasks
and activities. Although the meaning of self–esteem is constantly being changed by the way our
society views it, it is the base to one's self worth and the way we view ourselves. Today, in our
society we are trying to find out how much is too much and how much is enough to be mentally
healthy and not get carried away to the point of becoming a narcissist. Self–esteem can be tough,
you can learn to love yourself and cope with your insecurities. Nevertheless boosting someone else's
self–esteem is not an effective way to ensure a healthy and successful individual. I believe that self–
esteem is key and a great foundation to becoming successful in life. I also believe it has to come
from the person within and not from someone else. Self–esteem isn't given it's grown. Even though
there ways someone can help, for example giving you compliments or making you feel loved or
happy. These things shouldn't let u feel as if it's boosting your self esteem, once those things are
gone people lose their self esteem and feel as if they're worthless. Thats why its recommended for
oneself to learn to love themselves and builds their self esteem daily.
To begin with, the topic of self–esteem was brought up in the eighteenth century by enlightenment
thinker David

Difference Between Self-Esteem And Self Esteem
When individuals compare themselves to others, generally, people tend to use upward comparison
through the idea that one day they will become that ideal image. This could mean in wealth, health,
happiness, etc. When comparing to others, many people feel inadequate and their self–esteem
suffers for it. If someone cannot reach what they aspire to be, especially when comparing
themselves to others who have accomplished these goals, their self–esteem is generally lower than
average. Studying this topic allows insight into how others affect an individual's self–esteem when
they are compared and the differences that can affect the social comparison. This importance is to
determine what features and aspects of life are causing lower self–esteem in individuals that use
upward social comparison and how these affects can be different for everyone. The intent of this
study is to correlate whether people feel better or worse about themselves through upward social
comparison to general role models. This is important because role models can have a peculiar
impact on someone's self–esteem, depending on how that role model behaves. In previous studies,
the documentation on upward social comparison displays how different aspects can affect how an
individual may see themselves as lesser. Roy F. Baumeister discusses in Self–Esteem: The Puzzle of
Low Self–Esteem, "in social comparison situations, people may sometimes make upward
comparisons, presumably to gain more information about a task, or

Anxiety And Self Esteem
Anxiety and Self–esteem are factors that are part of many individuals' everyday lives. Anxiety is the
constant distress, worry, and fear of everyday conditions or situations, while, self–esteem is the way
a person evaluates, feels, or view about themselves. Studying anxiety and self–esteem are important
because they may influence people's lives, such as their actions, responses to either their internal or
external environments, emotions, decisions, or relationships with themselves and or other people.
For this particular study, the hypothesis suggest that it is predicted that anxiety has a strong,
negative correlation with self–esteem in college students. Even though there is not much research
conducted on the relation between these two variables (Mustafa et al., 2015), the research that was
conducted conveys that examining anxiety and self–esteem in relation to each other is important.
Moreover, there have been several studies conducted in examining the relationship between anxiety
and self–esteem that is important for the purpose of this study. One study examined how two
treatments, eye movement desensitization (EMDR) and competitive memory training (COMET)
help decrease low self–esteem in people with anxiety disorders (Staring et al., 2016). The rationale
for this study is that based on previous research, there is not much information on the relationship
between and treating low self–esteem in people who have anxiety (Staring et al., 2016). The
researchers hypothesized

The Importance Of Self-Esteem
Self–esteem is a realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself. In 1892, William James
defined self–esteem. His two hierarchy are "I–self" and "Me–Self". "I–Self" is the process of
knowledge while "Me–Self" is the result of knowing yourself. There are three types of knowledge:
self, social self, and spiritual self. In the mid–1960s, Morris Rosenberg also defined self–esteem. He
created the Rosenberg Self–Esteem Scale (RSEC). The RSEC asks questions ranging from strongly
agree to strongly disagree. The answers are counted into numbers and placed into a scale of 0–30. A
range of 15–25 is a normal self–esteem. Anything under 15 considers a low self–esteem. Robert
White believed in two sources: internal and external. Nathaniel was "the first person to define self–
esteem in terms or worthiness and competence." His findings were based on philosophy. Self–
esteem is one of the four core self–evaluators. Abraham Maslow included self–esteem in his
hierarchy of human needs. "He described two different forms of "esteem": the need for respect from
others in the form of recognition, success, and admiration, and the need for self–respect in the form
of self–love, self–confidence, skill, or aptitude" (wikipedia).

Advertising And Self Esteem
Consumers deal with advertisement every single day and it reflects every aspect of life, needs, and
desires. According to Statista Inc. an internet statistic company, United States was the world's
largest advertising market in 2016, with more than 190 billion U.S. dollars were spent in advertising
followed by China and Japan. The presence and influence of advertising is inevitable. It spread
through thousands of channels like internet, television, radio, magazines, newspaper, and etc.
Statistics from MarketingSherpa a research firm shows printed advertisement like newspaper and
magazines are most trusted channel of all following by television and catalogs advertising.
Regardless of these advertising channels, ones might not realize that these ads are actually affecting
their self–esteem. On the contrary, self–esteem reflects the confidence of a person and its worth in
every aspect of their life. A good advertisement and a person self–esteem seems not relates to one
another, however as it go deeper, it certainly influence an individual psychologically or even the
society at large. Depending on what type of ads viewed, it might affect the person thinking or even
the subsequent actions. It can reflect their motivations and lead to a certain actions towards
achieving specific desire. Often, a good advertising will have a positive impact on person self–

Low Self Esteem
What is self–esteem? Self–esteem is how we perceive ourselves. How we evaluate our self–worth
affects nearly every aspect of our lives. Low self–esteem can negatively affect our outlook on life
and ourselves. Low self–esteem can also cause major psychological problems like anxiety and
depression and may also cause mental health issues. In this assignment, I will be summing up the
information I gathered to support the argument that low self–esteem is a major cause of
psychological problems.
William James wrote what is considered the most important book in the history of modern–day
psychology. The Principles of Psychology. In one of James' chapters he explained that self–esteem
was recognized from the idea, identity. In discussing the me–self, James wrote of three different but
connected parts of self: the material self (all those parts of material existence in which we feel a
strong sense of ownership, our bodies, our families, the things we own), the social self (our felt
social relations), and our spiritual self (our feelings of our own (judging things based on opinions
and preferences instead of facts). These aspects were then treated in terms of connected or related
feelings of self–worth and self–looking actions. James made three major additions to self–
explanation. He voiced that the way of thinking of social selves ('a man has as many social selves
because others have an image of him as well) and characterized confidence as far as the proportion
of victories to

The Importance Of Self And Self Esteem
Introduction
Academic success is based heavily on not only the knowledge given to you, but your confidence in
your abilities to learn. Academic settings can be very stressful and can cause students, especially
those at a young age to begin to develop self–doubt when receiving so much new information. A
positive self–belief system can play a major role in the perception of the child. It is very important
to establish a sense of self–esteem and self–efficacy at a young age, because it becomes increasingly
easier to branch out of one's comforts zone to acquire the information needed to develop their
knowledge and skill–sets.
Self–Esteem
Self–Esteem is the accumulation of "beliefs about his or her attributes and abilities as a person." It
can be impacted by outside variables and is crucial to the internal development of one's self. Self–
Esteem is especially crucial to children, as well as adolescents who are struggling to discover their
place and purpose. The maintenance of keeping a positive self–esteem is a continuous effort as one
goes through challenges in life. According to psychotherapist Nathanial Branden, self–esteem is an
essential human need that it vital for survival and a normal healthy development. Self–esteem arises
automatically from within based upon a person's belief and consciousness. It is also stated that self–
esteem correlates with a person's thought, behaviors, feelings and actions. In terms of education,
maintaining a positive self–esteem is crucial to

Negative Self Esteem
Positive self–perception and self–esteem is crucial to the well being of all individuals. Therefore,
the negative self–perception and low self–esteem of children and adolescents who have attracted
disability labels is concerning, especially because these qualities seem to digress as students
progress from elementary grades, to middle years, and to high school. While society has made many
strides toward full inclusion of students with disabilities, it is clear that, for various reasons, simply
including students who attracted disability labels in the classroom is not improving how these
students perceive or feel about themselves. Understanding why and what can be done is critical to
ensure that all students' well being, including a positive sense of self and sense of belonging, is
supported by our schools and by society in general.
While the "development of self–esteem is fundamental for children's and adolescents' adaptive
functioning and perceived well–being", many children who have attracted disability labels report
negative self–perceptions and low self–esteem (Jemtå, Fugl–Meyer, Öberg, & Dahl, 2009, p. 568).
In fact, many of these children have been taught to hate themselves because of their disability and
"lack of any abilities deemed positive" (Rodis, Garrod, & Boscardin, 2001a, p. 18). They often feel
"less than" those around them, partly because others perceive them as "less than", too. For this, they
feel guilt and embarrassment, frustration and loss of control

Build their self–esteem, self–determination and efficacy
From the different challenges identified, it was established that adolescent girls were often
confronted with many identity conflicts and low self–esteem. It was during the adolescent stage that
many girls experience new societal expectations and responsibilities, which often resulted in
identity confusion or internal conflict that needed to be resolved during adolescence. Consequently,
the best ways of engaging girls were to first build their self–esteem, self–determination, self–
efficacy and confidence. According to Powell (2004), by being supportive and giving tasks and
challenges that raise self–esteem, adolescent girls may be able to have success in school and
develop self–motivation. Powell (2004) stressed the need for supportive environments and the need
to allow adolescents to develop their own unique identities. According to Erickson (1968),
adolescents were often at the fifth psychosocial stage of human development. This stage was called
"Identity versus Identity Confusion." According to Erickson, if adolescents were not allowed to
explore their new roles and follow a future positive path, they may remain confused about their
identity. Resolving conflicts during adolescence, according to Erickson, assists adolescents to
become who they would be, unique individual, progressing further into higher developmental
stages. Erickson noted that for adolescents to become autonomous, their self–concept and self–
esteem

The Importance Of Self Esteem
Throughout the decades, psychology is consistently being the center of the public eye.
Unfortunately, not many people really understand the idea behind psychology and why it is so
important. A majority of the human population misuses the basics of psychology, meaning they
emphasize on increasing the average human's self esteem but they do not really explain on how that
can be done. Self esteem is also another term that is often thrown around a lot, no one really gets the
full concept of what it means. In psychology, self esteem is not just how someone thinks about
themselves but it is more of a complex matter, dealing with mental and behavioral patterns. Because
they have suffered with depression, they have critical humans in their lives, and they have abusive
relationships, this could lead to one thing: Low self esteem.
One reason why someone might have low self esteem is that this said person is suffering or has
suffered with depression. At least 350 million people in the world today are battling depression.
Alongside depression, suicide comes into play. When someone has low self esteem, there is a very
likely probability that the same person is suicidal. Suicide is the second cause for death for
teenagers up to early adult years. If someone has low self esteem that means that they think
negatively on themselves, for example if someone thinks "I am worthless" that person will most
likely begin to believe that he or she is worthless, when they actually are not. This is a

direct result of what you believe about yourself. Self– esteem comes from your core belief about
yourself and how you view others and the world. You can get compliments about your skills and

Self–Esteem, Explaining our Behavior, False Consensus and Uniqueness, Self–Esteem Motivation,
Learned Helplessness Vs. Self–Determination and Reflections on Self– Efficacy. They make a
person understand how a person is socially and how individuals may view themselves and others.
The concept of culture and self–esteem is usually connected to "what other people think of you and
people in your group"(Myers.2012 pg 24). This is the idea about who you are and your inner self
and if you remain stagnant through different situations or activity. In western culture the idea of
culture and self–esteem has closely to do with the social circle you hang with and that is linked with
your happiness and positivity. Self esteem is described as how you feel about yourself as an
individual that can be affected by your social circle and environment. This also correlates with the
idea of explaining our behavior, many times we do things very mindlessly, we don't think at all
about our emotions or even actions for that matter. We are more aware of things happening

Causes Of Self Esteem
Self–esteem is the confidence in one's own worth, it is a person judgement of how people feel or
think about themselves whether it's negative or positive. It can be about your body image, goals,
looks, personality and so on. Low self–esteem can be caused by past negative experiences or
negative comments. It can also be caused by personal failures, maybe not meeting the standards you
wish you could or the standards people want you to meet, stress and bullying are causes of low self
esteem as well. Other than these causes there are still more that may cause someone to not feel
worthy of themselves. In the article "What is Self Esteem?" the author Kendra Cherry describes
what self esteem and what low self esteem can lead to. In the article she states that " Too little self–
esteem can leave people feeling defeated and depressed " meaning some people may not feel like
they are good enough or they may never reach their full potential and sometimes that gets people
depressed. Sometimes friends and family influence one to have low self esteem, they may
something like talk about your flaws but they won't notice it's hurtful because of the relationship.
School can also influence someone's self–esteem, school sometimes makes people set high
expectations such as getting good grades. Also people put in a lot effort into their academics but still
not getting the outcome you expected to get. Having low self–esteem is a problem because it can
lead to illnesses like anxiety

The Importance of Self–Esteem
It is often said that if an individual wishes to succeed in life they must have confidence. That in
order to handle difficult situations it is confidence that will see them through. But what if that's
wrong? What if there was a lesser known, subtly more powerful force that would allow an
individual to succeed and be resilient to those difficult situations? Often confused with confidence,
it is self–esteem that is a powerful mechanism affecting mental well–being, resiliency, and physical
health. However, before understanding how self–esteem effects humans it is important to
differentiate it from its oft confused cousin: confidence.
In order to understand the importance of self–esteem it is necessary to establish a basis. Both
definitions that are hereby given were extracted from the Psychology Dictionary in order to
maintain consistency. Therefore to begin, self–confidence is the varying levels of trust we place in
our skills, reasoning, and capacity. For example: David has high self–confidence in his ability to
complete the task at hand though he's never experienced the task before. The example illustrates that
David doesn't need confidence in himself nor in his self–image, but in tangible assets of skill,
capacity, and reasoning. If David fails in being able to complete the task then he knows that his high
self–confidence was inaccurate and can adjust his trust regarding that task for

Self Esteem In Adolescents
Self–esteem is an individual's overall and specific positive and negative self–evaluation of oneself.
Self–esteem can bring an impact to an adolescent's life in both a positive or negative way. Self–
esteem in adolescents can be affected by various factors, such as socioeconomic status, race, gender,
ethnicity and even societal pressure can affect a person's self–esteem. Adolescents can also have
high or low self–esteem in various areas such academic performances, relationships, and even in
their social life. Despite adolescents perceive who they are through self–concept, it doesn't actually
mean they would like fully about themselves. Self–concept is defined as an individual's personal
identity or set of beliefs about one is like as an individual. Various perceptions of themselves can
determine their self–esteem in the future.

During my adolescent years, my self–esteem has been fluctuated up and down due to being a black
girl living in a predominately, Hispanic middle–class neighborhood, with various interests such as
anime, writing, and watching WWE during my middle and high school years. Despite having high
marks on my academic performances, I've been constantly being bullied due to being plus–sized,
not having any relationships, and not acting like the stereotypical "Ghetto" black girl most people

Self Esteem Essay
Can self–esteem really engender success, or does it induce the well–being of individuals? By
success, I mean academic achievement and a college degree. Self–esteem is crucial to the well–
being and happiness of individuals. However, too much self–esteem makes people become
narcissistic, which is destructive and superfluous to becoming successful. Therefore, self–esteem
cannot engender success, which is corroborated with the self–esteem movement, but it can cause the
well–being of individuals.
The self–esteem movement over the last few decades confirms that self–esteem is not essential to
success and academic achievement. The self–esteem movement started in the 1960's where people
thought that therapy was okay. In the article, A Short ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows that a copious amount of students have described themselves above average when there
can only be half of them above average in order to maintain the average. This means that a lot
students have high self–esteem and are becoming narcissistic, which means that some of them
would not get what they expected. The students would either hurt themselves when they fail or hurt
others with their behavior if they succeed. Therefore, self–esteem is dangerous and destructive.
After that, Kremer asserts, " 'An intervention that encourages [students] to feel good about
themselves, regardless of work, may remove the reason to work hard,' writes Baumeister" (3). This
means students with high self–esteem are hindered to work hard because they are confident about
their skills that they think they do not need to work hard and be assiduous. This shows that self–
esteem is not crucial to success and academic achievement. Although self–esteem is not crucial for
success and academic achievement, it is essential for the well–being of individuals. In the Ted Talk,
How to practice emotional first aid, Guy Winch states, "We know from dozens of studies that when
your self–esteem is lower, you are more vulnerable to stress and anxiety" (13:07). This means that
people with low self–esteem are more likely to experience a lot stress and have

Narcissism in the younger generations is at an all–time high. This means that the younger generation
is less caring, less civil minded, and more likely to cheat (Twenge, 2014, p. 98,100). They may even
be more likely to commit mass shootings (p. 99). Narcissism can be defined as excessively high
self–esteem (Twenge, 2014, p. 92). What has caused high rates of narcissism in Generation Me?
There is a multitude of factors, but most prominent are the deterioration of community values,
childhood self–esteem boosting, and our society's fear of low self–esteem.
The first step in solving this issue is helping raise awareness that it is an issue. Most often
narcissism is seen as normal or even humorous. It is something that we don't take seriously and we
tend to avoid narcissistic people rather than trying to prevent them from becoming narcissistic.
Everyone knows what narcissism is and what generally causes it, but it is rarely seen as a serious
issue. However, we could not survive if everyone in this country was a narcissist. Organizations and
companies would fall apart as people did things to make themselves happy rather than to serve
others. People would die because being a quality caregiver means putting someone else's needs
before your own. People who are dependent on others to survive would not make it. Relationships
would fall apart and we would cease to grow as a country because people would stop having kids.
Generation Me is already having a harder time raising children

This paper is about the impact of self–esteem on daily life. The more negative thoughts and feelings
you have about yourself, the lower your self–esteem. People with low self–esteem often have little
confidence in their abilities and question their self–worth. A common scenario, which exemplifies a
lack of self–esteem, features college students who say, "It won't do any good to study. I won't make
a good grade anyway." These students think they are doomed to failure because of poor performance
in the past or their current fears of failure. Consequently, their lack of self–confidence results in
passivity with little or no effort to establish goals. Even when they do make worthwhile
accomplishments, these students perceive that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children growing into adulthood need to feel they are trusted to make decisions on their own.
Individuality plays a major role in this growth area in self–esteem. A good question to ask your self
in this area is, how do you feel when you are not trusted? Do you feel you have a high or low self–
esteem when faced with distrust? Children do not feel a high sense of self–esteem either when not
trusted. Working with children in sports events gives you a sense of how children develop their self–
esteems. Children play sports in most cases harder then adults do. Every event of the games they
perform helps them build or damage self–esteem. The best way to make a positive out of this
method is to make them feel good on accomplishments and greater on errors. Children need
assistance when they do make errors. If all they see is that they failed and blame is left on them then
they are failures inside. If they see they failed and words of encouragement are left in their head,
they will try harder when faced with same mistake. The best way to develop self–esteem in children
is to be an active role in their life for the rest of their lives. Major depression affects one in fifty
school children. Countless others are affected by milder cases of depression, which may also affect
school performance. The peak age of depression correlates with the peak years of low self–esteem.

Self Esteem and the Media
There are two types of media. There can be good media, and there can be bad media. One might
also refer to the media as positive or negative. This paper will introduce some negative affects found
as a result of children imitating and idolizing the media and the celebrities that go along with it.
There are also positive results that come from the media; the media is not all bad. This paper will
just focus on the bad affects I have found. The media spends billions of dollars to create
advertisements that appeal to our youth. While those companies are just looking to make money and
promote their products; they are doing so much more. Today's world is becoming more aware of the
problems arising from negative media.

What is viewed in the programs is not necessarily causing weight gain in children, lack of exercise
or any movement is causing the child to gain. The child will then have low self–esteem from being
overweight, and continue to eat and watch television as a crutch to dealing with harassment from
other children. The National Eating Disorders Association says, "81% of 10 year olds are scared of
getting heavy" (Teen Health and the Media). Americans spend over 110 billion dollars on fast food
in 2001 (Teen Health and the Media). Americans also consumed an estimated 56 gallons of soda per
person (Teen Health and the Media). Those are also contributing factors besides the media to
obesity in children. If children are not being subjected to junk food advertisements, they are seeing
thin models portrayed as beautiful and perfect. Runway models are becoming the worst role models
for any young children or adults. In Madrid, Spain a fashion show decided to turn away models with
low BMI in an effort to avoid eating disorders among young teens (Woolls, D., Sept. 2006). This is
a good decision for teens and for the company's reputations. Concha Guerra says, "Fashion shows
are mirrors for many young women" (Woolls, D., Sept. 2006). Many teens are starving themselves
into sickness to look like the women who are idolized on television and in magazines. Today

Confidence is the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone, something and themselves. In an
event that the person feels that they are a useful individual and likes their own existence, at that
point high confidence is experienced. Various mental specialists have recommended that if people
have high confidence, achievement and accomplishment will come about. High self–esteem can be
achieved, however, it often requires time and constant practice.
Social media in today's society plays a big role in affecting people's self–esteem. It's not a rule that
one needs to post a picture before, throughout and after every activity. For most teens, however, it
seems required. The subsequent likes, retweets and different ratings all get counted, both in the stark
arithmetic of the internet and as teens keep track of the judgemental ratings. For some particularly
young women, what begins as a fun approach to share and and stay connected in other people's
lives, can transform into an obsession about overall approval from others. This can wreck a person's
self–esteem. Teens have been comparing and contrasting themselves with mainstream pictures on
social media and are missing the point of just sharing and staying connected with one another. New
investigations are quite recently starting to prove the impacts of online networking are affecting the
way teens see themselves in a negative way.

Self Love And Self Esteem
It is very important for one to love himself. When you don't love yourself, it is hard to expect others
to love you. Agreed, we may have many faults and shortcomings. But you must embrace yourself
with all your faults and learn to love yourself. Self love and self esteem are related to each other. If
you suffer from low esteem, you can't have enough self love. With low confidence, you will find it
hard to love yourself at first, because you don't think high of yourself. But as you start loving
yourself, your self esteem will be boosted and you'll have higher confidence. If you want to love
yourself, you need to make a conscious decision. It is a decision that you have to make for a
fulfilled and happy life. With low self esteem, you can never reach your full potential. It is therefore
a crucial 'task' to love yourself. Here are some tips that will help you complete this task: Understand
yourself: If you want your personality to grow, you need to understand yourself, and know what
makes you bloom. You may have many flaws, but you need to accept them and move on. You
should understand that nobody is perfect. Yes, even the most perfect person you have met or
idolised also has flaws. You are not the only one. Go ahead and stand in front of a mirror. Admire
your reflection and fall in love with yourself. You might not be as important for others, but in your
life story, you are the hero, and your life revolves around you. Don't criticise yourself: Do you
belittle yourself over small things? Whenever you make any small mistake, do you get a voice
inside your head telling you that you are stupid and good for nothing? If that happens a lot with you,
you need to stop criticising yourself. It is important to look at your positive points instead of
focusing on the negative ones. Be positive and kind: When you start thinking positive, you become
kinder towards yourself and your self love increases. With this, increases your self esteem and
confidence. Kindness towards others also helps. You need to love other people. If you feel general
hatred towards others, you'll turn out to be a bitter person, and this will decrease your love towards
yourself. Love others and try to help them. This will make you feel better about

Scope of goals and objectives If you spend your life doing nothing, it doesn't matter what kind of
esteem you have. One of the factors that influence self esteem is what you achieve with your
existence. The goals and objectives you set for yourself. How often and in what manner you
challenge yourself. Attention received We all love to belong and when we are accepted as part of a
group, our esteem surges. When people accept and respect you, you are likely to develop a high self
esteem and vice versa. You shouldn't pay attention to yourself only if you want people to pay
attention to you as well. Childhood Have you ever heard the saying, "the boy is the man?" if you
have, then you understand why childhood plays a vital role in shaping your self esteem. The good
news is that if your childhood helped you build a great self esteem, you can continue to maintain it
but if it's a low self esteem, as you grow, you can subject yourself to positive feeders that will help
you restore a healthy sense of self. Society Societal pressures, standards and expectations have
largely contributed to low self esteem. There is a definition for who is beautiful, who is successful,
who is smart, when you should marry, when you should get a job and so many other things that
make life difficult for people. Media The media is the amplifier for societal influences and we are

Low Self Esteem is a very typical thing nowadays with people criticizing each other due to social
media. Self–esteem is an important and valuable building block in having a prosperous life. Having
low self–esteem can lead up to depression and to not wanting to do anything, you want to give up on
life. Putting other people down will hurt their feelings which in then will make them start to think
that they are not valuable enough. Having high or even a medium amount of self–esteem will make
your life way easier and you won't think about these issues as much or at all. On the other hand,
self–esteem to many people doesn't matter, they refuse to acknowledge that it's even an issue . When

Regrettably, having no self–esteem can hugely affect the way you live. Take Amy Tan as an
example. She cries to her mother screaming ""Why don't you like me the way I am?, "I'm not a
genius! " She couldn't live up to her mother's expectations so she never actually thought she was
acceptable All the confidence she once had was diminished within seconds. Amy preferred to give
up on everything and not bother trying to be the best she could possibly be. Having no self–esteem
can easily affect your mentality. You can't do anything because you over think situations. You will
start to think you're not special for any of the exceptional things that might come your way.
Ultimately, having at least a little bit of self–esteem can lead to an overall good life. You do not give
as much thought on what people think or say about you. Furthermore, you feel more sure about
yourself. You stop doubting yourself, you accept new challenges. You also accept that you can fail
and that's fine, you can bring yourself back up and do even better. As stated by Megan Cichocki,
"The pursuit of happiness is for us to be happy with ourselves, and to always be happy with who we
are." This statement has some truth to it because if we are not content with ourselves then we will
just bring ourselves down constantly and that is not fun to do. Overall, it

The Identification Of Self Esteem
In the United States 85% of people suffer from low self–esteem. This means that many of us are
consumed by fear of failure, fail more often than not, tend to procrastinate, feel unfulfilled,
frustrated, angry, unloved, unlovable, nervous or shy, are indecisive, suffer from many other
uncomfortable feelings that prevent us from our realizing full potential. In order to cure this illness,
we must first know the cause and where it originated.
The identification of self–esteem as a part of psychology thought to have its origins from the
philosopher and psychologist, William James. The observation about self and storage of those
observations by the "I–self" create three types of knowledge, which count for the "Me–self",
according to James. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the mid–20th century, the rise of phenomenology and humanistic psychology led to renewed
interest in self–esteem. Self–esteem then took a central role in personal self–actualization and in the
treatment of psychic disorders. Psychologists started to consider the relationship between
psychotherapy and the personal satisfaction of a person with high self–esteem as useful to the field.
This led to new elements being introduced to the concept of self–esteem, including the reasons why
people tend to feel less worthy and why people become discouraged or unable to meet challenges by
themselves. Currently, the core self–evaluations approach includes self–esteem as one of four
dimensions that comprise one 's fundamental appraisal of oneself, along with locus of control,
neuroticism, and self–efficacy. The concept of core self–evaluations as first examined by Judge,
Locke, and Durham (1997), has since proven to have the ability to predict several work outcomes,
specifically, job satisfaction and job performance. Self–esteem may, in fact, be one of the most
essential core self–evaluation dimensions because it is the overall value one feels about oneself as a
person. Self–esteem encompasses beliefs about oneself, (for example, "I am competent", "I am
worthy"), as well as emotional states, such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame. Stated by John P.
Hewitt in Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology. Smith and Mackie a social psychologist

Low Self-Esteem And Self Esteem
How can we help people all around the world who suffer from low self–esteem? Why should people
care about what people say to them. People get so hurt off of the things that they put on the internet

they go home or some places that is quite and has no people and they start to think bad about
themself and they don't know how to escape it until someone tells them something positive and
important. Almost, "44% of girls in high school are attempting to lose weight", because of the
negative comments they think in their head. Most girls think that everyone silently judge them for
their weight and body image and at least "7 in 10 girls believe that they are not good enough and
don't measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in school and relationships with
friends, and family members." A lot of girls are independent in their own ways, some are not the
confident of being independent and are scared to be themselves and became someone they aren't. I

The Problem Of Self Esteem
Abstract
Drug addiction, prostitution as well as prostitution are the most social problems in the current
society. On the other self–esteem is one of the most important variables that have a significant
influence on these challenges. This research aims to investigate the role of self–esteem in peoples
with the tendency to addiction, prostitution, as well as theft in Kerman city, Iran. The paper is
divided into various sections starting from introduction, literature review, finding and conclusion.
Introduction
Self–esteem is all about the thought feeling and emotion regarding how an individual thinks about
himself or herself. Self–esteem may lead to positive impact as well as negative consequences

Conversely, a healthy individual self–esteem is upon their capabilities to understand themselves
precisely, as well as the ability to accept and value their selves. Therefore, it means that a person
may realistically recognize his or her weakness and strengths.
Methods
This was just a causal–comparative research since the study aimed at identifying the role of self–
esteem in the tendency towards drug abuse, prostitution, and theft. To carry out the research, the
self–esteem level was measured and reordered among the group of unhealthy and ordinary people.
The sample composed of 300 people out of whom 200 of them have been imprisoned in Kerman
Jail with the bad history of drug abuse, theft, and prostitution, while the rest were just ordinary
people without any criminal record. Due to inadequate response in answering and returning of the
questionnaires only 283 unhealthy and healthy people were regarded as the study. The data
collection tool was 30 questions Eyesenck self–esteem which is the reliability and validity has
confirmed 16 chi–squares were employed for data analysis.
Findings
It was realized that those with low self–esteem tend to engage in dangerous behaviors. For instance,
the tendency of people towards robbery (P = 0.001), prostitution (P = 0.001) and (P = 0.001), these
was obtained through chi–square. So the addicted subjects were those with the history of

Effects Of Self Esteem On Self-Esteem
). Self–esteem significantly affects the child's development in regulating their emotions to support
healthy and positive interpersonal relationships. Children with high self–esteem display higher
confidence in self–expression, giving and receiving love, development of judgment, and gain
critical cognitive skills (Kostelnik et al., 2010). Moreover, children with low self–esteem often
showcase negative emotional response, aggression, antisocial behavior, and a pessimistic outlook
(Kostelnik et al., 2010). As confidence is stemmed from the sense of security that children feel from
their caregivers; healthy parental efficacy plays a role in helping their child develop positive self–
esteem. The caregiver must provide an adequate amount of WAGER to provide a secure space for
the child to learn, gain self–awareness, and develop self–regulating skills (Kostelnik et al., 2010).
Therefore, the amount of WAGER and sensitive caregiving that a parent provides is correlated to the
level of self–esteem that the child develops. For example, when parents provide a sensitive
nurturance, children are more likely to feel secure in their worth, competence, and control
(Kostelnik et al., 2010). As social participants, children will project their self–esteem when
accepting or rejecting how others treat them (Kostelnik et al., 2010). As a result, the self–esteem and
self–perception that children develop ultimately influences social interaction and interpersonal
relationships (Kostelnik et al.,

Furthermore, the effects of these awards go far beyond sports and contests. Being awarded at such a
young age for just about anything is highly misleading of how the real world works. Many young
Americans have developed a sense of entitlement, expecting to gain more in return for less effort.
Per a study done by Bernard Goldberg approximately one out of every three college students
believes they deserve a B just for attending their courses. This sense of privilege is an almost
contagious mind–set that has only gotten worse. But many ask how exactly the idea that one should
be rewarded for almost anything began?
The self–esteem movement was developed in 1969 after Nathaniel Branden wrote "The Psychology
of Self–Esteem." The idea Branden proposed was that self–esteem is essential to overall success in
life. This caused many parents to believe that, if they could start by increasing their children's self–
esteem they would become more successful in the future. This brought up ideas intended to help
children gain more confidence and self–worth. For example, all children should receive
participation awards so that no child would feel bad for not winning. Consequently, studies have
found that children's self–image may be negatively impacted by the ideas behind participation
trophies and awards. Yet, parents still encourage rewards be given to all children.
There seem to be two obvious reasons why parents want their children to receive trophies. One, they
are terrified of how

Effects Of Social Media On Self-Esteem And Self Esteem

  • 1. Effects Of Social Media On Self-Esteem And Self Esteem Abstract Social media is the main source of today's entertainment. Research suggests that it could be influencing our behaviours and self–esteems, there are studies on people with lower self–esteems and higher self–esteems and how social media influences these (Charles Steinfield, 2008). The aim of this study is to explore the themes on how social media can cause or may influence self– esteem levels. Three participants took place in this study from Northumbria University in the North East of England. The age range was from 18–19 and they were a mixture of men and women, this ensured that participants weren't all of the same gender and gave us a fair set of results. However, this only gives us a certain amount of validity due to the results only being from people at Northumbria University who were aged 18–19 and this cannot account for others for example those over the age of 19 who are not students. A thematic analysis showed our running themes throughout the three interviews that showed social media influencing their self–esteem, these were that 'Self– portrayal' and 'Achievements'. There were similar trends found throughout all three interviews, and these were that all three participants spent at least up to 2 hours on social media a day. Another trend is that all three students don't post frequently but when they do it is for attention. Findings have been discussed with previous literatures thought about suggests that influences of self–portrayal and others image is a big ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Low Self Esteem In modern society, the new rise of depression can be traced to low self–esteem. Low self–esteem is prevalent in females and is often a big concern for parents as their daughters enter their teenage years. It has now become the norm for a parent to question the mental stability of their daughter. The concern continues to escalate as the impacts of low self–esteem, such as changes in mood, struggle with social skills and intrapersonal conflict, are seen as significant and possibly detrimental in adulthood. Self–esteem begins to develop from the moment we are conscious of ourselves, our surroundings, and the people around us. Self–esteem determines how a person lives – how they talk, handle relationships, choose career paths and create lifestyles ("Self Esteem" Eating Disorders). It is easy to see that self–esteem has a lot of leverage on the quality of life that an individual could have. As self–esteem continues to decline in girls and women, the effects are coming to light more and more. Changes in mood and personality are often the most common effect of low self–esteem. Many parents are often worried about a change of mood in their daughter's mental stability. Low self esteem has been associated with anxiety, stress, loneliness and an increased likelihood of depression ("Self–Esteem" Utexas). The impact on mood and personality often makes an individual unapproachable, which is ironic, considering the fact that many people with low self esteem crave attention and affection. ... • 3. The Effect Of Self Esteem Effects of self–esteem What is self–esteem? Self–esteem is confidence in one's own worth or abilities and self–respect. Self–esteem is how a person feels about his or herself. A person's self–esteem can be high, low, or in between. Someone with high self–esteem might be more confident in seeking out new friendships. However, someone with low self–esteem may not even try to have a social life because they tend to feel worthless. If a person self esteem is in between they are very observant to everything. Self–esteem can affect ones mood, health, relationships, comfort zones, and low resilience. Importance of valuing yourself According to "person to person" the self can be broken down into physical self, mental self, emotional self, and social self. Physical self is more than just your appearance. People who neglect their own needs and forget to nurture themselves are at danger of deeper levels of unhappiness, low self–esteem, and feelings of resentment. Also, sometimes people who spend their time only taking care of others can be at risk for getting burned out on all the giving, which makes it more difficult to care for others or themselves. Taking time to care for yourself regularly can make you a better caretaker for others. Mental health is a level of psychological wellbeing, or an absence of mental illness. It is the "psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment". Mental self is performed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Reflection On Self Esteem Self–esteem is a term used to describe how a person judges themselves in terms of being valued, accepted and worthy. This evaluation of one's self is extremely important as a child moves through each stage of development. It can determine a child's future success or failure. A positive self– esteem allows one to make gains in achievement through hard work and effort. They are prone to accepting new challenges and working hard to attain a goal. If they fail, they learn from their mistakes and form new strategies to make improvements. A negative self–esteem allows one to set themselves up for failure: not believing that they can successfully achieve a goal if they exert more effort. It is important for parents and teachers to encourage a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Chinese and Japanese students are higher academic achievers, their self–esteem is lower compared to U.S. students (Harter, 2006; Hawkins, 1994; Twenge & Crocker, 2002). This is in part due to cultural values. Asians believe that it is more important to praise and encourage others rather than placing emphasis on themselves (Fablo et al.,1997). The African–American culture values close family ties, community support and strong ethnic pride. Because these values encourage a sense of belonging, children of this ethnic group have a higher self–esteem compared to their Caucasian counterparts (Gray–Little & Carels, 1997). Gender–stereotyping plays a role in self–esteem. For example, girls tend to absorb society's message of certain a physical appearance. If one does not possess those physical traits, they become dissatisfied with themselves and their self–esteem declines (Dohnt & Tiggemann, 2006). Gender– stereotyping is used on the academic competency level. Girls remain strong in language arts self– esteem while boys have a stronger math, science, and physical/athletic self–esteem (Fredericks & Eccles, 2002; Jacobs et al., 2002; Kurtz–Costes et al., 2008). Girls also excelled in self–esteem in social competencies (Marsh & Ayotte, 2003; Young & Mroczek, 2003). Parenting practices is another influence on self–esteem. It can set the stage for high achievement or failure. One type of parenting practice uses the authoritative style. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay on Self-Esteem Self–Esteem over Logic and Beliefs Columbia College, Missouri Abstract Self–Esteem gives a person the right to value themselves. Our self–esteem sometimes overpowers our logic, and can lead us to act in ways that are not always our own. This paper examines how the following theories; Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, Self– Evaluation Maintenance Theory, Self– Affirmation Theory, Rationalization Trap and Self–Discrepancy Theory impact a person's self– esteem decisions. Where people in different cases come to realize that the choices they have made overpower their superior perfect logic, they have to deal with the consequences that come along with the choices they have made. Self–Esteem over Logic and Beliefs According to Cherry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This clearly shows how elements of life depend on the type of knowledge and wisdom used. When we use this knowledge and wisdom, we can better the strategies we have so that we can achieve more. It should also be stated that individuals have different ways of looking at conflicts or situations. Because of this vast difference, the way they accomplish tasks differs as well. Note that when someone does not carry out his strategies well, they are bound to fail. Theory of Cognitive Dissonance Cognitive dissonance can be defined as "a feeling of discomfort caused by performing an action that runs counter to one's customary (typically positive) conception of oneself" (Aronson, Wilson & Akert, 2010). The body's natural way of keeping one's self– esteem high is to counteract that by either changing our actions or to talk ourselves into believing that what we have done was the right thing to do in the moment (2010). For example, a female student chooses to take a job stripping in a night club after spending three months looking for a job. She struggles with this decision mentally because she was raised in a strict, religious household. Her up–bringing and the need to pay tuition become two points that challenge her positive self–esteem. The female student will make concessions to her beliefs to keep her self–esteem high saying things like "this is my only choice so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Importance Of Self Esteem You or Society? "It's not what you are that is holding you back. It's what you think you are not". Before self esteem was believed to be a necessity to one's happiness, the concept seemingly held little to no value to practically anyone. In the past, society didn't have the time or the want to focus on something as miniscule as self esteem while, there was much more to worry about such as appearances. Today however, self esteem is a key aspect to being truly contempt and successful with the life we have all been given, aiding in the advancement of not only our individual lives but, what we could do to help further society as a whole. To begin with, the origin of self esteem it's self has been a huge topic of discussion throughout nations. Dating all the way back to the 1960s, a book by the name of "The Optimistic Child Professor" by Martin Seligman mentions ways in which self esteem has a direct correlation to "feeling good". Martin Seligman held the belief that exercises that forcefully try to increase your self esteem through another will only result in those people drawing closer to depression. Then came the 1980s and this was when a man by the name of John Vasconcellos convinced people to believe that low self–esteem was directly provoking crimes and other offenses such as teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, and underachievement in terms of education. In the 1990s, Roy Baumeister believed that curing low self esteem issues was a completely incorrect way to deal with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Self Esteem And Self-Esteem Self–esteem, also known as self–respect, is the confidence in one's worth or abilities. Low self– esteem is the opposite or lack of confidence in one's own worth. Self–esteem is shaped throughout one's life, it will increase and decrease throughout life but with essentially remain at the same level. Self–esteem has both positive and negative affects depending on if an individual has low or high self–esteem. There is more research on the effects of low self–esteem because it usually has to most negative effects on someone's health. Self–respect can also influence one's decision making, people with low self–esteem generally make poor or unwise decisions due to lack of confidence. Bullying can be caused by low self–esteem or causes the development of low self–esteem. Someone who does not have high levels of self–confidence may try and belittle others to feel better about themselves; being bullied can in turn cause someone to feel bad about themselves, therefore, causing low self–esteem. Ultimately, low self–esteem has been known to negatively affect someone's health, it can cause anxiety, depression, or lead to drug usage. Self–esteem has been studied for decades, by focusing on the development, self–imagery, effect on decision making, bullying, and the negative effects that follow the high or low levels of self–esteem we are able to unravel how self–esteem effects our lives and how we can change our own self–esteem. • 8. Self Esteem And Self Image Rationale: Over the last three weeks, the Purple Group has been making great strides in building rapport and group members have been opening up about their personal conflicts, anxieties and insecurities. I have felt touched that others have disclosed such heartfelt and gut wrenching personal histories and at times, I have been almost moved to tears. While we have had many positive experiences and discussed many positive aspects in our lives within the last three groups, I can 't help but think about the negative and emotional experiences. It is because of this that I want to spend an hour discussing issues relating to self–esteem and self–image. I would like to consciously bring some well needed positivity to the group. Additionally, over the last week I have been working on a paper with which I need to take a nonfictional person [Elliott Smith] and create a biopsychosocial, diagnostic and clinical assessments and apply counseling theory approaches to that individual 's life. In fact. I will be using one of his songs to demonstrate examples of low self– esteem. The majority of the 102 songs on his 8 albums–two of which were released posthumously– dealt with his lifelong battle with depression, heroin and amphetamine addiction and avoidant behaviors. Having immersed myself into Elliott Smith 's dark despairing music, I feel that I too am in need of an uplifting therapeutic group session. • 9. Importance of Self-Esteem Self– esteem is an important part of life. Without strong self–esteem we are not at our full potential. We need strong self–esteem to have the confidence to do many tasks. The way others perceive us has an effect on our self–esteem as well as how we perceive ourselves. In order to have good self– esteem, we need others to be encouraging and communicate in a positive way. We also need to build our own self–esteem by realizing we need to be our self, not what others necessarily think we should be. Negativity from others only lowers our self–esteem and makes us less confident. We need confidence in order to communicate well with others. • 10. Importance Of Self Esteem Importance of Self–Esteem Self–esteem has been a major factor in people's daily lives including their routine. Without realizing the impact self esteem has on us, we have certain levels of it and we depend on it daily to do tasks and activities. Although the meaning of self–esteem is constantly being changed by the way our society views it, it is the base to one's self worth and the way we view ourselves. Today, in our society we are trying to find out how much is too much and how much is enough to be mentally healthy and not get carried away to the point of becoming a narcissist. Self–esteem can be tough, you can learn to love yourself and cope with your insecurities. Nevertheless boosting someone else's self–esteem is not an effective way to ensure a healthy and successful individual. I believe that self– esteem is key and a great foundation to becoming successful in life. I also believe it has to come from the person within and not from someone else. Self–esteem isn't given it's grown. Even though there ways someone can help, for example giving you compliments or making you feel loved or happy. These things shouldn't let u feel as if it's boosting your self esteem, once those things are gone people lose their self esteem and feel as if they're worthless. Thats why its recommended for oneself to learn to love themselves and builds their self esteem daily. To begin with, the topic of self–esteem was brought up in the eighteenth century by enlightenment thinker David ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Difference Between Self-Esteem And Self Esteem When individuals compare themselves to others, generally, people tend to use upward comparison through the idea that one day they will become that ideal image. This could mean in wealth, health, happiness, etc. When comparing to others, many people feel inadequate and their self–esteem suffers for it. If someone cannot reach what they aspire to be, especially when comparing themselves to others who have accomplished these goals, their self–esteem is generally lower than average. Studying this topic allows insight into how others affect an individual's self–esteem when they are compared and the differences that can affect the social comparison. This importance is to determine what features and aspects of life are causing lower self–esteem in individuals that use upward social comparison and how these affects can be different for everyone. The intent of this study is to correlate whether people feel better or worse about themselves through upward social comparison to general role models. This is important because role models can have a peculiar impact on someone's self–esteem, depending on how that role model behaves. In previous studies, the documentation on upward social comparison displays how different aspects can affect how an individual may see themselves as lesser. Roy F. Baumeister discusses in Self–Esteem: The Puzzle of Low Self–Esteem, "in social comparison situations, people may sometimes make upward comparisons, presumably to gain more information about a task, or ... Anxiety is the constant distress, worry, and fear of everyday conditions or situations, while, self–esteem is the way a person evaluates, feels, or view about themselves. Studying anxiety and self–esteem are important because they may influence people's lives, such as their actions, responses to either their internal or external environments, emotions, decisions, or relationships with themselves and or other people. For this particular study, the hypothesis suggest that it is predicted that anxiety has a strong, negative correlation with self–esteem in college students. Even though there is not much research conducted on the relation between these two variables (Mustafa et al., 2015), the research that was conducted conveys that examining anxiety and self–esteem in relation to each other is important. Moreover, there have been several studies conducted in examining the relationship between anxiety and self–esteem that is important for the purpose of this study. One study examined how two treatments, eye movement desensitization (EMDR) and competitive memory training (COMET) help decrease low self–esteem in people with anxiety disorders (Staring et al., 2016). The rationale for this study is that based on previous research, there is not much information on the relationship between and treating low self–esteem in people who have anxiety (Staring et al., 2016). • 13. The Importance Of Self-Esteem Self–esteem is a realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself. In 1892, William James defined self–esteem. His two hierarchy are "I–self" and "Me–Self". "I–Self" is the process of knowledge while "Me–Self" is the result of knowing yourself. There are three types of knowledge: self, social self, and spiritual self. In the mid–1960s, Morris Rosenberg also defined self–esteem. He created the Rosenberg Self–Esteem Scale (RSEC). The RSEC asks questions ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The answers are counted into numbers and placed into a scale of 0–30. A range of 15–25 is a normal self–esteem. Anything under 15 considers a low self–esteem. Robert White believed in two sources: internal and external. Nathaniel was "the first person to define self– esteem in terms or worthiness and competence." His findings were based on philosophy. Self– esteem is one of the four core self–evaluators. Abraham Maslow included self–esteem in his hierarchy of human needs. "He described two different forms of "esteem": the need for respect from others in the form of recognition, success, and admiration, and the need for self–respect in the form of self–love, self–confidence, skill, or aptitude" (wikipedia). • 15. Low Self Esteem What is self–esteem? Self–esteem is how we perceive ourselves. How we evaluate our self–worth affects nearly every aspect of our lives. Low self–esteem can negatively affect our outlook on life and ourselves. Low self–esteem can also cause major psychological problems like anxiety and depression and may also cause mental health issues. In this assignment, I will be summing up the information I gathered to support the argument that low self–esteem is a major cause of psychological problems. William James wrote what is considered the most important book in the history of modern–day psychology. The Principles of Psychology. In one of James' chapters he explained that self–esteem was recognized from the idea, identity. In discussing the me–self, James wrote of three different but connected parts of self: the material self (all those parts of material existence in which we feel a strong sense of ownership, our bodies, our families, the things we own), the social self (our felt social relations), and our spiritual self (our feelings of our own (judging things based on opinions and preferences instead of facts). These aspects were then treated in terms of connected or related feelings of self–worth and self–looking actions. James made three major additions to self– explanation. He voiced that the way of thinking of social selves ('a man has as many social selves because others have an image of him as well) and characterized confidence as far as the proportion of victories to ... Academic settings can be very stressful and can cause students, especially those at a young age to begin to develop self–doubt when receiving so much new information. A positive self–belief system can play a major role in the perception of the child. It is very important to establish a sense of self–esteem and self–efficacy at a young age, because it becomes increasingly easier to branch out of one's comforts zone to acquire the information needed to develop their knowledge and skill–sets. Self–Esteem Self–Esteem is the accumulation of "beliefs about his or her attributes and abilities as a person." It can be impacted by outside variables and is crucial to the internal development of one's self. Self– Esteem is especially crucial to children, as well as adolescents who are struggling to discover their place and purpose. The maintenance of keeping a positive self–esteem is a continuous effort as one goes through challenges in life. According to psychotherapist Nathanial Branden, self–esteem is an essential human need that it vital for survival and a normal healthy development. • 17. Negative Self Esteem Positive self–perception and self–esteem is crucial to the well being of all individuals. Therefore, the negative self–perception and low self–esteem of children and adolescents who have attracted disability labels is concerning, especially because these qualities seem to digress as students progress from elementary grades, to middle years, and to high school. While society has made many strides toward full inclusion of students with disabilities, it is clear that, for various reasons, simply including students who attracted disability labels in the classroom is not improving how these students perceive or feel about themselves. Understanding why and what can be done is critical to ensure that all students' well being, including a positive sense of self and sense of belonging, is supported by our schools and by society in general. While the "development of self–esteem is fundamental for children's and adolescents' adaptive functioning and perceived well–being", many children who have attracted disability labels report negative self–perceptions and low self–esteem (Jemtå, Fugl–Meyer, Öberg, & Dahl, 2009, p. 568). In fact, many of these children have been taught to hate themselves because of their disability and "lack of any abilities deemed positive" (Rodis, Garrod, & Boscardin, 2001a, p. 18). They often feel "less than" those around them, partly because others perceive them as "less than", too. For this, they feel guilt and embarrassment, frustration and loss of control ... Self-Esteem And Self Esteemcy Build their self–esteem, self–determination and efficacy From the different challenges identified, it was established that adolescent girls were often confronted with many identity conflicts and low self–esteem. It was during the adolescent stage that many girls experience new societal expectations and responsibilities, which often resulted in identity confusion or internal conflict that needed to be resolved during adolescence. Consequently, the best ways of engaging girls were to first build their self–esteem, self–determination, self– efficacy and confidence. According to Powell (2004), by being supportive and giving tasks and challenges that raise self–esteem, adolescent girls may be able to have success in school and develop self–motivation. Powell (2004) stressed the need for supportive environments and the need to allow adolescents to develop their own unique identities. According to Erickson (1968), adolescents were often at the fifth psychosocial stage of human development. This stage was called "Identity versus Identity Confusion." According to Erickson, if adolescents were not allowed to explore their new roles and follow a future positive path, they may remain confused about their identity. Resolving conflicts during adolescence, according to Erickson, assists adolescents to become who they would be, unique individual, progressing further into higher developmental stages. Unfortunately, not many people really understand the idea behind psychology and why it is so important. A majority of the human population misuses the basics of psychology, meaning they emphasize on increasing the average human's self esteem but they do not really explain on how that can be done. Self esteem is also another term that is often thrown around a lot, no one really gets the full concept of what it means. In psychology, self esteem is not just how someone thinks about themselves but it is more of a complex matter, dealing with mental and behavioral patterns. Because they have suffered with depression, they have critical humans in their lives, and they have abusive relationships, this could lead to one thing: Low self esteem. The concepts that I took interest in knowing more is Culture and Self–Esteem, Explaining our Behavior, False Consensus and Uniqueness, Self–Esteem Motivation, Learned Helplessness Vs. The concept of culture and self–esteem is usually connected to "what other people think of you and people in your group"(Myers.2012 pg 24). This is the idea about who you are and your inner self and if you remain stagnant through different situations or activity. In western culture the idea of culture and self–esteem has closely to do with the social circle you hang with and that is linked with your happiness and positivity. Self esteem is described as how you feel about yourself as an individual that can be affected by your social circle and environment. The Importance Of Self Esteem Amy Sanborn Professor Matthew Mills BU 110 25 October 2016 The Importance of Self–Esteem It is often said that if an individual wishes to succeed in life they must have confidence. That in order to handle difficult situations it is confidence that will see them through. But what if that's wrong? What if there was a lesser known, subtly more powerful force that would allow an individual to succeed and be resilient to those difficult situations? Often confused with confidence, it is self–esteem that is a powerful mechanism affecting mental well–being, resiliency, and physical health. However, before understanding how self–esteem effects humans it is important to differentiate it from its oft confused cousin: confidence. In order to understand the importance of self–esteem it is necessary to establish a basis. Both definitions that are hereby given were extracted from the Psychology Dictionary in order to maintain consistency. Therefore to begin, self–confidence is the varying levels of trust we place in our skills, reasoning, and capacity. For example: David has high self–confidence in his ability to complete the task at hand though he's never experienced the task before. The example illustrates that David doesn't need confidence in himself nor in his self–image, but in tangible assets of skill, capacity, and reasoning. If David fails in being able to complete the task then he knows that his high self–confidence was inaccurate and can adjust his trust regarding that task for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Narcissism can be defined as excessively high self–esteem (Twenge, 2014, p. 92). What has caused high rates of narcissism in Generation Me? There is a multitude of factors, but most prominent are the deterioration of community values, childhood self–esteem boosting, and our society's fear of low self–esteem. The first step in solving this issue is helping raise awareness that it is an issue. Most often narcissism is seen as normal or even humorous. It is something that we don't take seriously and we tend to avoid narcissistic people rather than trying to prevent them from becoming narcissistic. Everyone knows what narcissism is and what generally causes it, but it is rarely seen as a serious issue. However, we could not survive if everyone in this country was a narcissist. Organizations and companies would fall apart as people did things to make themselves happy rather than to serve others. People would die because being a quality caregiver means putting someone else's needs before your own. People who are dependent on others to survive would not make it. • 32. Self Love And Self Esteem It is very important for one to love himself. When you don't love yourself, it is hard to expect others to love you. Agreed, we may have many faults and shortcomings. But you must embrace yourself with all your faults and learn to love yourself. Self love and self esteem are related to each other. If you suffer from low esteem, you can't have enough self love. With low confidence, you will find it hard to love yourself at first, because you don't think high of yourself. But as you start loving yourself, your self esteem will be boosted and you'll have higher confidence. If you want to love yourself, you need to make a conscious decision. It is a decision that you have to make for a fulfilled and happy life. With low self esteem, you can never reach your full potential. It is therefore a crucial 'task' to love yourself. Here are some tips that will help you complete this task: Understand yourself: If you want your personality to grow, you need to understand yourself, and know what makes you bloom. You may have many flaws, but you need to accept them and move on. You should understand that nobody is perfect. Yes, even the most perfect person you have met or idolised also has flaws. You are not the only one. Go ahead and stand in front of a mirror. Admire your reflection and fall in love with yourself. You might not be as important for others, but in your life story, you are the hero, and your life revolves around you. Don't criticise yourself: Do you belittle yourself over small things? Whenever you make any small mistake, do you get a voice inside your head telling you that you are stupid and good for nothing? If that happens a lot with you, you need to stop criticising yourself. She cries to her mother screaming ""Why don't you like me the way I am?, "I'm not a genius! " She couldn't live up to her mother's expectations so she never actually thought she was acceptable All the confidence she once had was diminished within seconds. Amy preferred to give up on everything and not bother trying to be the best she could possibly be. Having no self–esteem can easily affect your mentality. You can't do anything because you over think situations. You will start to think you're not special for any of the exceptional things that might come your way. Ultimately, having at least a little bit of self–esteem can lead to an overall good life. You do not give as much thought on what people think or say about you. Furthermore, you feel more sure about yourself. You stop doubting yourself, you accept new challenges. You also accept that you can fail and that's fine, you can bring yourself back up and do even better. As stated by Megan Cichocki, "The pursuit of happiness is for us to be happy with ourselves, and to always be happy with who we are." The observation about self and storage of those observations by the "I–self" create three types of knowledge, which count for the "Me–self", according to James. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the mid–20th century, the rise of phenomenology and humanistic psychology led to renewed interest in self–esteem. Self–esteem then took a central role in personal self–actualization and in the treatment of psychic disorders. Psychologists started to consider the relationship between psychotherapy and the personal satisfaction of a person with high self–esteem as useful to the field. This led to new elements being introduced to the concept of self–esteem, including the reasons why people tend to feel less worthy and why people become discouraged or unable to meet challenges by themselves. Currently, the core self–evaluations approach includes self–esteem as one of four dimensions that comprise one 's fundamental appraisal of oneself, along with locus of control, neuroticism, and self–efficacy. The concept of core self–evaluations as first examined by Judge, Locke, and Durham (1997), has since proven to have the ability to predict several work outcomes, specifically, job satisfaction and job performance. Self–esteem may, in fact, be one of the most essential core self–evaluation dimensions because it is the overall value one feels about oneself as a person. Self–esteem encompasses beliefs about oneself, (for example, "I am competent", "I am worthy"), as well as emotional states, such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame. Stated by John P. Hewitt in Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology. Smith and Mackie a social psychologist defined it by saying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Effects Of Self Esteem On Self-Esteem ). Self–esteem significantly affects the child's development in regulating their emotions to support healthy and positive interpersonal relationships. Children with high self–esteem display higher confidence in self–expression, giving and receiving love, development of judgment, and gain critical cognitive skills (Kostelnik et al., 2010). Moreover, children with low self–esteem often showcase negative emotional response, aggression, antisocial behavior, and a pessimistic outlook (Kostelnik et al., 2010). As confidence is stemmed from the sense of security that children feel from their caregivers; healthy parental efficacy plays a role in helping their child develop positive self– esteem. The caregiver must provide an adequate amount of WAGER to provide a secure space for the child to learn, gain self–awareness, and develop self–regulating skills (Kostelnik et al., 2010). Therefore, the amount of WAGER and sensitive caregiving that a parent provides is correlated to the level of self–esteem that the child develops. For example, when parents provide a sensitive nurturance, children are more likely to feel secure in their worth, competence, and control (Kostelnik et al., 2010). As social participants, children will project their self–esteem when accepting or rejecting how others treat them (Kostelnik et al., 2010). As a result, the self–esteem and self–perception that children develop ultimately influences social interaction and interpersonal relationships (Kostelnik et al., ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Psychology Of Self Esteem Furthermore, the effects of these awards go far beyond sports and contests. Being awarded at such a young age for just about anything is highly misleading of how the real world works. Many young Americans have developed a sense of entitlement, expecting to gain more in return for less effort. Per a study done by Bernard Goldberg approximately one out of every three college students believes they deserve a B just for attending their courses. This sense of privilege is an almost contagious mind–set that has only gotten worse. But many ask how exactly the idea that one should be rewarded for almost anything began? The self–esteem movement was developed in 1969 after Nathaniel Branden wrote "The Psychology of Self–Esteem." The idea Branden proposed was that self–esteem is essential to overall success in life. This caused many parents to believe that, if they could start by increasing their children's self– esteem they would become more successful in the future. This brought up ideas intended to help children gain more confidence and self–worth. For example, all children should receive participation awards so that no child would feel bad for not winning. Consequently, studies have found that children's self–image may be negatively impacted by the ideas behind participation trophies and awards. Yet, parents still encourage rewards be given to all children. There seem to be two obvious reasons why parents want their children to receive trophies. One, they are terrified of how ...
