A Country Of Illusion Chapter 1 Summary
In chapter 1: A Country of Illusion, Reisner describes the exploration and settlement of the Western United States, more specifically California.
Reisner explains that a Spaniard by the name of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado explored out this way for gold. Reisner then moves on and goes
into detail about the Powell Expedition of 1869 and says that explorers found land that was dry and bare that showed no sign of vegetation which
than got the name of the Great American Desert. After the discussion of the barren land, Reisner briefly discussed the Homestead Act and how it
affected people and how it granted access and ownership of land to people. In Chapter 2: The Red Queen, Reisner began to describe the early
settlement into California and the water issue that most came to face but in the act of describing this Reisner discussed what he said was a famous

With the amount of dams being built it was seen that it could become a problem from the amount of money being spent. Though there were many
attempts to try and stop the growth of the many dams going up all this was being fought by President Carter but his many attempts were trumped due
to bill and congress and also the election of President Reagan. In Chapter 10: Chinatown, Reisner begins by illustrating how there is a
misunderstanding and how people say California is this place with prolific land with its beaches and green grasses, in all reality it is mainly
semi–desert terrain. Reisner than talks about the 1960's State Water Project and how it had affected the economy and ecology of the U.S. then to wrap
it up in line with this topic was the talk of the California Aqueduct, corporate farms, and the low cost of water and how issue came to arise due to all
the water projects and irrigation throughout

The Incredible Power of One Day in the Life of Ivan...
The Incredible Power of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
It has been Russian writers in particular, who for two centuries have struggled against censorship and oppression to accomplish two great tasks: to
create innovative and meaningful art, and to use that art to make a statement about a specifically Russian predicament. So often the theme was
political, and so many generations of Russians criticised Mother Russia for her backward ways. Vissarion Belinsky's caustic admonitions in his "Letter
to Gogol" were long a rallying cry for writers: "This is why, especially among us, universal attention is paid...to every manifestation of any so–called
liberal trend, no matter how poor the writer's gifts...The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Much of GULAG was based on hundreds of letters and memoirs that former prisoners mailed to Solzhenitsyn after One Day was published." (Remnick,
119)
When reading One Day it is overwhelming to comprehend and imagine this single dawn–to–dusk description, with the hindsight to understand that
millions of multitudes of men and women suffered through such an evil scheme of servitude of cruelty.
One Day was the first book of its kind to be printed in Russia. Miraculously, it was not only printed, but subsequently soldto the citizenry, who were
actually allowed to read it. This unheard–of event occurred during a very delicate period of time known as the "Khrushchev thaw", when open
condemnation of the "cult of personality" began to become commonplace, even expected. These brief years of relief enjoyed a momentary artistic
flowering, and poets like Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Anderi Voznezensky, among others, began to emerge. "During Khrushchev's cultural thaw, plays or
novels such as Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denizovich were the primary signs of new freedom." (Smith, 110) The response to this little
book was immense, and an interesting documentation of varied responses to it is included in Leopold Lebedze's work, Solzhenitsyn: A Documentary

Biological Diversity Found On Earth
Speciation accounts for the remarkable biological diversity found on earth. However, it has been extremely difficult to conclusively demonstrate in
mockingbirds. Remote oceanic islands have long been recognized as natural models for the study of evolutionary processes involved in diversification
and speciation. Their remoteness and susceptibility to catastrophic disturbances by invasive species provide opportunities for colonization and
divergence of populations through isolation, making islands fantastic study plots of diversification and speciation. Groups of islands may share a
closely similar geological history and comparable climate, but due to these subtly different, or perhaps distinctly different, environments, their
inhabitants... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Problematically, these characteristics are often under selection and can be inappropriate or misleading. For example, island forms may experience more
rapid evolution in response to heightened genetic drift or natural selection due to small population sizes, lack or absence of interspecific competition,
exploitation of new niches, and other evolutionary possibilities opened by island ecosystems (e.g. Carlquist 1965, 1974, Lack 1976). These scenarios
could potentially explain why so many island species frequently pose such challenges in taxonomic classification. Another problem in regard to
Galapagos mockingbird classification emerges out of the fact that only one form or species is found on any single island and the relative contributions
of selection and drift to differentiation remain unclear. My objective is to provide evidence for evolution, specifically macroevolution by speciation and
diversification in Galapagos Mockingbirds, scientifically termed Nesomimus, and articulate the many limitations at this time in understanding this
sequence through the examination morphology.
Archipelago location and Composition
The Galapagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago located west of the South American coast in the Pacific Ocean and straddle the equator. The
Galapagos archipelago comprises 13 major islands, 6 smaller islands, over 40 officially–named islets and many smaller unnamed islets and rocks. Of
these islands, Isabela, formed by

Irish Potato Famine Essay examples
In the early 1800s life in Ireland wasn't easy, Irish citizens got by day to day by farming and relying on the potato. The potato was their main source
of food and money. With out the potato the Irish would have nothing. No one was prepared for what was about to happen in 1845, the beginning of the
Great Irish Potato Famine.
The Irish Potato Famine was the worst tragedy in the history of Ireland. The outcome of the famine would result in hundreds of thousands dead, an
failure of the economy in Ireland, and millions of emigrants forced to leave their home and country just to try to survive. The famine would effect
countries other than Ireland as well. Some of these countries included England, America, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1845 a crop disease known as 'blight' would be introduced to Ireland. It was a disease that would cause potatoes to rot while they grew. It was from
guano, which was part of a fertilizer that was imported from South America. The contaminated fertilizer was also distributed to other countries in
Europe such as France, Germany, The Netherlands, and England. It was responsible for thousands of deaths in these countries but was soon eliminated,
as these countries were not as dependent on the potato as the Irish were.
The Irish discovered the problem when they found that they were harvesting black potatoes. At first they blamed the problem on poor weather, or
insects. They just figured that it was another poor farming season. The actual spreading of the disease was that its pores were carried in the wind and
land in pits where potatoes were to be planted. The disease would not die in the extreme winter cold and would double the problem for the next
spring's crop.
The first year, the Irish only saw it as another crop failure because it only effected a third of the harvest. It was later that season that they realized that
they were about to face a famine. The Irish government would not give out aid to farmers because they felt that it would make the country look bad
showing other people that the citizens could not care for themselves. The

Analysis Of Edward Abbey's 'Desert Solitaire'
Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey begins in the area surrounding Moab, Utah. He discusses his intense love and adoration for the land. This theme of
laying out the land for the reader continues from Chapters 1–5. It is apparent the Abbey adores nature in its purest form. Abbey rarely has visitors of
the human kind, he is more often visited by snakes, deer, birds, and other wildlife than the parks superintendent, the chief park ranger, and a few
tourists here and there. Abbey finds himself a little lonely from time to time in the beginning of the book but by Chapter 3: The Serpents of Paradise
he finds a friend. He first encounters a not so friendly creature, a faded midget, a poisonous rattlesnake lying underneath his doorstep. Abbey often
finds himself talking to the animals in this book, so he decides to issue the snake a warning and remove it. When it comes back to the trailer a second
time, Abbey keeps his promise and kills the snake. Eventually, he finds another snake, which he recognizes is an enemy to the rattlesnake, and he
sets out to domesticate it. Abbey decides to take it on excursions with him, wrapping the snake around his waist underneath his shirt. Eventually,
the snake was released and never returned. In Chapter 4, Abbey focuses more on the plants in the region, citing his favorite wildflower, the
cliffrose, and going over his weekly schedules. His busiest days are the weekends when campers come, after he cleans, makes his rounds, takes a
couple days off, restocks supplies, and then starts all over again. Chapter 5, is when things start to get heavy. It is at this point Abbey starts
revealing how truly frustrated he is with the US government and the tourists. Abbey is fiercely protective of the park and soon discovers that roads
will be paved in the park to increase tourism. He is horrified at the aspect of a new road because he sees automobiles as an enemy to the National
Park industry. To Abbey, cars limit tourists from actually see the land, stating that a short distance on bike or foot is much more appreciated than a
very long distance in a car. He also suggests a new plan for national parks in order to preserve their authenticity. Abbey thinks that tourists should travel

United States Senator For Florida
United States Senator for Florida, Marco Rubio once stated, "The Hispanic community understands the American Dream and have not forgotten what
they were promised – that in the U.S., a free market system allows us all to succeed economically, achieve stability and security for your family and
leave your children better off than yourselves." Every year Hispanics search the regions of Texas in search of this very opportunity to better themselves
and especially their youth. One such region is the poverty stricken region that is the Rio Grande Valley. It is a region that has begun to accept its current
role as nothing more than a region of widespread poverty and undervalued skill, but there is one man who will not sit idly by and watch as this
region and the Hispanics who inhabit it are characterized by benighted stereotypes and filled with cruel insults. There is one man who will work
diligently to better the region. That man is Eric Garza. Garza believes, "Future opportunity exists for Hispanics to excel and advance themselves and
their families" (Garza). He sees that a disheartened culture has suddenly sprung up and is on the cusp of something greater than what people believe
they can achieve. Eric Garza, a prominent figure in the RGV and State of Texas, has been working to better the welfare of Hispanics since he was a
teenager, through his work with The Libre Initiative and his various involvements in local and statewide communities. Garza's journey began in the

The Negative Effects Of Gentrification
Gentrification Gentrification is the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that is conforms to middle class taste. The term is often
used negatively, suggesting the displacement of poor communities by rich outsiders. Often people who are displaced cannot find affordable housing,
and this can lead to homelessness. Gentrification is hurting Colorado families because 1.) it causes prices increases for Denver metro rents, 2.) it
displaces and breaks up families, and 3.) offers no affordable housing options for those displaced. () Definition. They kick people out of their house
and then they raise the rent so they can't come back, they target specifically poor neighborhoods to make more money. One of the biggest impact is
that it may destroy the culture of the neighborhood and friends and family have a chance of turning homeless. One of the main reasons is to make
more money on the neighborhood because its to poor and they need to make more money. (4, June 2017)(Wikipedia)The term is usually used negatively.
The first piece is the term and the definition. The second piece is the impact on friends, family, and culture. I think ____________________
because I think that gentrification is still getting worst and worst every day, The reason being is that the rent is always increasing and hasn't
stopped yet. The impacts are that the population decreases in gentrified areas. And the ones who left are struggling to find a new home. Some
evidence is that globeville saw an increase of 67% in home values in the last year, more people from out of the states come to denver colorado and
don't mind paying the rent here because they don't live here. Due to the new marijuana law and how it was first legal in colorado made people from
around the states move to colorado which increased the population and which increased the rent cost. It is getting worst and worst because the rent is
constantly increasing over the years and that makes the low income people struggle and then later on can lead homelessness, and struggle to find a new
home. The population is also increasing with more people from other states so they don't really mind paying high rents simply because they haven't
been here long enough

Santa Fe Trail Research Paper
Prior to 1821, the land beyond Missouri was an uncharted region known only to buffalo and displaced Native Americans. When Mexicans won
independence from Spain in 1821, they encouraged trade with the United States via New Mexico. Lack of water and hostile Native Americans made
the trip dangerous, but William Becknell, "Father of the Santa Fe Trail," left Missouri that year to arrive in Santa Fe a month–and–a–half later. After a
large profit, Becknell continued to make trips, blazing the path that became known as the Santa Fe Trail. Soon, traders, visitors, and the military would
regularly travel the route. Two paths developed on the Sante Fe trail, splitting at Fort Larned, KS after following the same path from Missouri to the

unique because they were one of the largest Native American Tribes to "disappear." The Anasazi exhausted their natural resources, and fell victim to a
drought in which they could not recover from. They had to leave in order to survive. The tribe left all of their amazing architecture and pottery, making

Legalizing marijuana would make the drug easily accessible, which could potential lead to abuse and potential health effects in adolescence and adults
that abuse the drug. This law could potentially increase crimes and the number of arrests for driving under the influence of drugs, which puts the
safety of our citizens at risk. States should consider their options in order to fight legalizing of marijuana in their states. This paper provides some
concepts around the impacts a state could incur and encourages the state to look beyond dollars earned and to ensure the state understands some of the
impacts associated such as higher accidents and fatalities, increased criminal activity and a higher number homeless people. This could be solved by
maintaining the federal regulations on controlled substances by the federal government. It is encouraged that the state careful consider if this is a

Difference Between America's Best And Worst Claims
America's Best and Worst Claims
Between the years of 1845 and 1848 America was on a mission to expand farther west. This was mission was not something that was completed
over night, but instead too many years to reach the goal. There were multiple disagreements and even some wars erected from this operation. In this
paper I am going to discuss the how the Oregon Territory was one of the best claims we have owned and how the California and Texas Territory was
one of the worst claims we have owned.
The Oregon territory was originally occupied for many years by the Native Americans. During the 19th century the British and American citizens
started moving into the territory and settling on the land. American citizen predominantly settled in the fertile valleys because most of them were
farmers. As years passed by many people started migrating to the Oregon territory and the territory started to become crowed. With the territory being
crowed this would soon lead to conflict. James Polk the master mind behind the manifest destiny campaign believed that the American people had the
right to expand to the entire continent North America.

as the United States– Mexican border. This agreement also caused Mexico to the sell California and any land above the Rio

According to researchers at the University of Texas, the dates of construction can be deciphered by counting tree rings from lumber used in building.
There was also speculation around the arrangements of pueblos and other buildings in regards to the cosmos around us. As we can see in Cliff Palace
and Sun Temple, they both have a clear line of vison with no other buildings interrupting its path. Because of their placement there is reason to believe
that the Puebloan people incorporated astronomy into their architecture. We can learn about the personal beliefs of these people through the excavation
of buildings erected on the site. As noted earlier, astronomy was a clear influence on architecture. Religion and community dynamics were brough
fourth following the discovery that not all buildings were for residential use. Rather for spiritual and communal use (Munson, Bates and Nordby, 45).
Although construction began towards the end of the time of the pueblo people in this region, the cliff dwellings seen at Mesa Verde are some of the
best preserved in north America. Their miraculous preservation is bizarre because of their use of such organic materials in construction. The ancestral
pueblo people would use a combination of wooden beams, sandstone, and mortar to construct these dwellings which lie right beneath the mesa top,
where they would practice agriculture (Breternitz,

Analysis Of Dances With Wolves And Unforgiven
According to the film critic, Phillip French, "The Western has always been about America rewriting and reinterpreting her own past," if this is indeed
the case, then the two most popular Westerns of the early 1990s reveal that many Americans had rejected the traditional interpretation of the Old West.
The critically and commercially successful, Dances with Wolves and Unforgiven, repudiated the patriotic frontier myth that had characterised the
Western when it was the preeminent genre in American cinema. Informed by new Western historiography, itself an expression of political concerns that
had been moving into the American mainstream since the 1960s, the movies display a complex and nuanced understanding of the frontier experience.
Dances with Wolves rejected the traditional narrative of the inherent superiority of the Anglo–American hero conquering both Native Americans and
the wilderness, and also focused on the environmental destruction that accompanied the ideology of Manifest Destiny. Unforgiven would similarly
reject the frontier myth, replacing the democratic, civilised frontier town, with a brutal regime in which white men's property rights prevail over any
sense of justice. The film is noted for its self–reflexive nature, with a writer documenting and embellishing the tales of the Old West before the viewer's
eyes. This self–reflexion indicates that Americans were re–evaluating the myths of the frontier, and seeing them for what they were, creations by the

One Day Of The Life Of Ivan Denisovich By Aleksandr...
The novel, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, depicts how prisoners endure and survive life in the gulag camp.
Solzhenitsyn suggests that the prisoners' ability of surviving in the camp depends on how they view the work they are assigned. Within the camp a
majority of the prisoners' time is spent dedicated to work assigned to them from the guards. Throughout the novel it is suggested that those who have a
good work ethic are more likely to survive than those who do not. The ways in which they can survive include being hard–working, focusing intently
on the work and taking on multiple job roles. This allows them to gain favours or an offering from fellow prisoners. This is principally shown through
the two contrasting characters, Ivan Denisovich and Fetiuokov.
Ivan Denisovich, also referred to as Shukhov, is described as extremely hard–working and is always occupied with jobs that may at first appear
arbitrary. Although they appear to be arbitrary they are actually carefully and selectively chosen according to what Shukhov will gain in return from
completing them. Ivan Denisovich is thought to be one of the best workers in the camp because of his positive attitude towards work. Whilst
working on a wall there was need of a bricklayer so "Shukhov thought he might as well be one" because he believes that "if you can do two things

Essay about Justice On Trial in Kafka's The Trial
Justice On Trial in Kafka's The Trial
There is no such thing as justice – in or out of court. Clarence Darrow i
Most often critically interpreted as a search for Divine justice, Kafka's The Trial, a fragmented and unfinished novel, appears to leave us with the same
impression as the words above of Clarence Darrow. In other words, there is no justice. This assessment of Divine justice by Kafka works on two
levels. On one level, he is illustrating the helpless nature of the individual when in conflict against an established bureaucracy. On another level, he is
illustrating the existential dilemma of man in the face of a godless, indifferent, and often hostile universe. A search for justice byJosef K. finds no

discover why he is accused and must suffer are in vain. Yet, his character and his sins are conventional, and he has no bold or threatening ambitions. All
he can do is ask questions, but he receives no answers that would clarify the bureaucratic system into which he has been thrust. Just like existential
awareness undermines the entire rational structure of Divine justice, so, too, the alternative hypotheses, the multiple explanations, the different
interpretations, and the uncertainty Josef K. experiences, serve to undermine the whole rational structure of the justice system. Josef K. comes to
understand the socially constructed, arbitrary, and absurd nature of the justice system, and, justice itself "The truth allegedly resides above the realms
of justice and injustice."iii This literary analysis will focus on how Josef K.'s experiences in The Trial demonstrate not only the corrupt justice system
of the era but also the absurd and futile attempt to seek an arbitrary concept like justice in an existential realm.

Mandated Reporting Laws : The Most Vulnerable Individuals...
Mandated Reporting Laws
The most vulnerable individuals are found within the elderly and children population. Children can be impacted tremendously when experiencing
situations that may affect their emotional, physical, and mental stage. Abuse can be seen in different forms such as sexual, emotional, physical abuse,
and neglect. If any child is exposed to any of these abuse, it is the law to reach out to the proper authorities in order to protect the child's life. Each
state has its own mandated reporting laws and it is important to be able to recognized the protocol and what the law requires in each state.
What constitute a child abuse in each state may vary, but ultimately, it has the same components. Child abuse is defined as a physical, emotional or
psychological abuse including sexual abuse, exploitation, abandonment, or neglect, torture, confinement, cruel punishment in the State of New Mexico.
Whereas in Colorado, it constitutes a child abuse or neglect as a resulting in imminent risk of serious harm, death, serious physical or emotional
harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation of a child. For Arizona, child abuse consist of infliction or allowing of physical injury, impairment of bodily
function or disfigurement, serious emotional damage diagnosed by a doctor or psychologist, and as evidenced by severe anxiety, depression,
withdrawal, or aggressive behavior caused by acts or omissions of individual having care and custody of child. All three states are very clear that

Gary Wockner's Argument For Using More Water
Snow falls gracefully from the sky, landing atop the beautiful Rocky Mountains. When that snow melts into water, it collects into streams, which run
into rivers, and low down into the plains and further into different states. That water that originally fell as snow will be collected and pumped into
thousands of homes, businesses, and farmlands in order to supply thousands of people with safe drinking water. One thing people generally do not
concern themselves with, is water usage, and so in the United States alone, approximately 3580,000 million gallons of water was used, with 70 percent
of that coming from surface water (Price 1). With so much water usage, the demand has already outgrown supply, and new ways of providing that

The programs that provide these services at PSPC include operating a 24–hour suicide helpline, offering a support group for people who have lost a
loved one to suicide, providing licensed professional counseling, and educating the community. Most of these services are provided to the people in
Pueblo, however, the helpline serves all of the people in Colorado. Pueblo Suicide Prevention Center was established on September 8, 1969 by
twenty–three community members including some from Colorado Mental Health Institute and other leaders in Pueblo. The Colorado Mental Health
Institute identified the need for an intervention system that would offer services to high–risk, crisis situations that would be immediate and easily
accessible. This led to the formation of the 24–hour suicide helpline in Colorado. This action was considered a preventive response to decrease suicide
attempts and suicide related deaths. In 1979, Pueblo Suicide Prevention Center became a member of the American Association of Suicidology. Then,
became the first Certified Center of the American Association of Suicidology in the State of Colorado. In 2014, Metro Crisis Services also earned their
accreditation and began providing services to Colorado.(Dorwart, 2015) . Pueblo Suicide Prevention Center's mission statement is "To work toward the

Richard Arlen Smith Biography
Richard Arlen Smith Walking through the city of Rocky Mount, VA today it is hard to fathom that it is the same place that it was in the 1930s. Life
has changed drastically since that time. Richard Arlen Smith tells a story of a very different era than the one that is seen today. It is a time where
the women stayed at home to cook and clean, the children went to school even with the grounds covered in snow, and the men were the bread
winners in the family. Mr. Smith has witnessed some incredible changes in society over his lifetime, most of which he believes is for the best. July

"If you have ever slept on an island you will never be quite the same" (Unknown). I have slept on an island and it truly has changed who I am
today. This little island is called Pumpkin Knob and sits in Casco Bay, Maine. It is a place that has inspired and moved me to see life in a different
perspective. It all started back when I was three months old, on July fourth weekend, and ever since then my family and I have traveled the distance to
stay on our little island of Pumpkin Knob. Till this day I do not know why this place has changed me so, maybe its that every year the island has
changed itself. The newly grown lilies in the garden, the freshly trimmed grass, the overgrown bushes on the trails or maybe it's the new faces I see ...

However the brightness of the day may have dimmed, but not the joy from the people around me. Everyone is either watching kids play basketball on
the old wooden framed basketball hoop or enjoying a match of badminton while the zip–line flies by overhead. The night however, does bring a mood
about the people of the island. It's a mood of vigor and excitement! When the sun is beginning to set and the sky portrays a magnificent array of
yellows reds and pinks which reflects off the water making a sort of etched painting glistening in the falling sun. As the sun sets, dinner has just

Frederick Jackson Turner Frontier Thesis Summary
The American Frontier consisted of a vibrant and expansive land made for the opportunity ofAmerican settlement until the late 19th century.
Unfortunately, the age of exploration of the Frontier officially ended in 1890 with the U.S Census Bureau declaring that "here can hardly be said to be
a frontier line." A historian, Frederick Jackson Turner, claimed that the Frontier shaped American culture and the attitude of Americans. By evaluating
U.S Census Bureau statistics, he famously wrote the Frontier Thesis. Along with the Frontier Thesis, Turner contributed to the field of New History,
primarily analyzing the West and Sectionalism of theUnited States. Today, historians acknowledge the tremendous impact Turner's role in American

Irish Potato Famine Essay
Some of these countries included England, America, Canada, and Australia.... Show more content on

Eventually the federal government imported Indian corn from America to be distributed to the most desperate people. Although it was for good
intentions, it didn't comply with Irish expectations for food. The corn was difficult to mill on the small number of mills in Ireland, it was difficult to
digest, and it was not very filling, leaving many Irish hungry. It eventually became accepted and the Irish learned to deal with it.
In 1846 due to no effort to rid the infected potatoes of the previous year the new season provided enough food to feed the country for only one
month. This caused people to eat what ever they could get their hands on. People ate dogs, horses, birds, mushrooms, roots, flowers, and anything
that was believed to have a nutritional value. Fish was a food that involved a risk to obtain due to the rough Irish seas and rocky coast. Shellfish and
seaweed were eaten but after many people died from eating poisonous varieties of both.
Crime rates rose, and because of overcrowed prisons and expensive costs of keeping prisoners alive, convicted prisoners were sent to Australia. This
caused for people to break laws just to escape the danger of living in Ireland.

Adolph Coors year of 1985 was a great one. All the sales were record high while everyone else's was dropping. The significance of this was astounding
since the beer industry was down all together. People didn't drink a lot of beer but, Coors beer jumped by 13% during that time. This shows how Coors

There are many different types of beers such as light, premium, or super–premium. Coors' has been able to impact all those different types and be
competitive. They are able to satisfy all the type of beer drinkers, and by doing this they are able to receive more of a profit by being able to satisfy
all the beer drinkers. By having distributors in the U.S. and Canada, Coors is able to hit many different markets than other beer companies. This gets

Analysis Of Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn, A Russian Author With...
Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn, a Russian author with personal experience of labor camp conditions, relates the experiences of his fellow prisoners by
showing the world that humanity can be maintained in the most degrading of places. Such a theme can be observed closely in his novel One Day in
the Life of Ivan Denisovich, first published in 1962. As the title suggests, the novel is about a day in the Gulag (prison) from dawn to dusk from Ivan's
perspective. The Gulag is designed to strip the Zeks of their individual identities and dignity. The zek's names are taken from them and replaced by
numbers: 'S 854, "The Tartar read from the white stripe that had been stitched to the back of his black jacket," (15). Then their personal belongings are

In the stance taken by Solzhenitsyn, Ivan maintains his dignity by resisting the idea of indulging himself with food. In the novel the author raises an
important question about whether food is a necessity or valuable to humanity (dignity). When Ivan recalls a prisoner who talked about the types of
Zeks who manage to live: "Those who lick other men 's leftovers, those who count on the doctors to pull them through, and those who squeal on their
buddies," (8), he says, do not survive. Though Ivan knows that the prisoners do survive at the cost of their own humanity, he respects and agrees with
most of Kuziomin 's statement: "You're sure to be given something to eat there, though there were plenty of others at that game, more than plenty– and,
what's worse, if you found a bowl with something left in it you could hardly resist licking it out," (7). For Ivan, avoiding the mess hall in the morning
or after the meal was important, as he might be tempted into leaving his dignity for a little amount of food. This is a significant step towards
conserving his morality and surviving his sentence. In Solzhenitsyn perspective, keeping away from the food represents the idea of control over one's
body. This is highly significant because living in the Gulag, where the authority treats zeks in the most dehumanizing of ways, one needs to be able to
command themselves, controls their desires to stay intact their dignity.

Cattle Drive Patterns
Cattle Drives The west was rough, untamed, was denied stateship, because of the rowdy people, and towns. The cattle drives, and cowboys shaped
the west, the cowtowns, and the people. After the Civil War, there was as shortage of food, mainly beef, so the people of the west, and the
ranchers were depended upon for the food, beef. With no, or few railroads, the cowboys were forced to drive the cattle long distances. The cow
towns were practically made by the cowboys and the need for beef. They were called boom towns. Boom towns were towns with a few houses, and
a general store. With cowboys coming through, the towns boomed, with give or take 27 saloons, 8 gambling halls, and a boot hill were normally
added. The towns closest to Texas had bigger, and better attractions. They were the main stops for the cattle, for selling, and then moved down the
state's. Over time people realized that the cattle weren't always the reason for the stops, sometimes the women were. The Chisholm trail was the route

Westward Expansion In The West
The influence of the westward expansion in the West is still evident today. Influences such as land, and the individualist mindset remain the same today.
Also, a lot of ways the frontier land today is isolated compared to the West we live in today, too. The frontier emphasized the spirit of nationalism and
individualism in the United States.
As mentioned amongst the themes of the West, thefrontier experience converted settlers into individualists, who hoped to gain opportunity in the lands
of the West. The ample amount of resources and the greater social mobility of frontier areas instilled a form of individualism in American
frontiersman. This is similar to the individualism present today, for instance in politics and other government affairs, people dislike of governmental
interference in their affairs, similar to the people that had migrated to the West so they could be more independent and have less governmental
interference. Migrating somewhere new becomes an unfamiliar environment, as travelers adapted and devised new techniques and objects to cope
with an unknown land. This can also be seen now in Americans being able to adapt to innovations and keep innovations and ideas of the Western front.
In many rural areas, the concept of land and ranches, how to care for them, and the small settlement is still evident today, especially in the state we live
in.
Although the history of the American frontier is glorified for the vanquishing of Indian and the march of manifest destiny that made America great
and special, this is still evident today in society. For instance, in media today, the Dakota Pipelines were on Native American tribal land, yet we as
Americans used the power of authority to make them leave their land for the supposed greater benefit of America. That was the notion in the past, and
still is the notion today, Native Americans were not considered Americans, although the inhabited areas and lands way before we had. The
representation of the West showcased triumph of "civilization" over "savagery." Also, back in the 19th century, scholarly essays were written that
stated moving west separated Americans from their European roots, those who were from there. This is evident today as well,

Impact Of Reconstruction During The Reconstruction Period
Unit 1 Paper The United States changed dramatically during the reconstruction period. After the reconstruction period, the United Stated continued to
adjust well as we see it change economically and politically. Though the adjustment continued to go well, the change that occurs after reconstruction is
emphasized with industrialization and the impact that industrialization has in certain regions of the U.S and on the people. Along with the new
economy came with complications that affected the improvement of conditions in work and in life. During the Gilded Age, there is a difference
between the North and South economies. When industrialization started to consume the United States, the North quickly adapted to the change as cities
begin to develop allowing citizens to move to industrial cities in search of new opportunities such as employment. On page 592 it states "the rapid
expansion of factory production, mining, and railroad construction in all parts of the country except the South signaled the transition from Lincoln's
America to a mature industrial society" demonstrating how the South failed to adapt to the new industrial society. The South did not really adapt to
industrialization as they stuck to their agricultural ways. The new industrial society created the interest of the American West. The American West
begins to capture the attention of many people as it becomes an area of opportunity. On page 602, Frederick Jackson Turner argued that on the Western

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich explores the man's struggle to survive in the trying circumstances of a Soviet
Gulag. Though the novel leads the reader through the horrific conditions in one of the work camps, it does not focus on the lack of hope that the men
feel but it focuses on the perseverance and resilience of the prisoners. Shukhov's character shines through as a prominent example of the courage of the
souls in the work camps. Further, Alyoshka proves to never give up in the face of extreme conditions and is always around to help his gang. Finally,

Furthermore, the author reveals through Shukhov's actions the determination that mankind experienced in the gulags. Shukhov takes a job, which
could normally be considered a gruelling task, and turns it into an act of fortitude. As the sole thing he sees is "the wall in front of him" (97) and he
shouts to not "give up yet, boys!" (109), he strongly exemplifies the perseverance of the prisoners. The task that he is given should dishearten him but
instead, boosts his morale and thus, his determination. The character of Shukhov is crafted as a glaring example of the resilience men have in a gulag,
and this is additionally explored through the characterization of Alyoshka.
Solzhenitsyn creates the compelling character of Alyoshka who stays true to himself and to others in the face of adversity. Staying faithful to his
religion gives him the strength he requires in order to focus on the positive outcomes of the gulags. Contrary to popular opinion, the author uses
Alyoshka's dialogue to exhibit the positivity as he says to "'[b]e glad [they are] in prison'" so that they "'have time to think about [their] soul[s]'"
(177). He regards his imprisonment as a time to reflect upon his spirit and the kind of person he is which is a true accomplishment of the human spirit
in the calamity of a gulag. Further, the author uses his actions to display his steadfast nature that causes him to be of tremendous help to his gang. His

The Klondike Gold Rush In William Robert Morrison's Eldorado
William Robert Morrison is a Canadian historian who wrote the article "Eldorado", in which he gives a detailed account of the Klondike gold rush of
1897–99 and how difficult of a time that was for the prospectors who travelled in hopes to strike riches. No matter which way people went into
Dawson City, the challenges were tremendous. Morrison believes that the Klondike gold rush is what made the westerly region of the North a part of
the modern world. During this time an economic recession had a grip on the country; with the gold rush boom the economy would improve. In this
article Morrison writes about how differently Canadians and Americans acted throughout this time. Americans were violent, riddled with gangsters
and mob violence, while Canadians in Dawson City were prohibited from the use of firearms; because of this not a single murder occurred in a
Dawson City saloon during the gold rush. During the gold rush period businesses were closed on Sundays, and Mounties kept the law in order. Even

Summary Of Daniel Solove The Nothing To Hide Argument
Daniel J. Solove's "The Nothing to Hide Argument", an article discussing why society has privacy when there is nothing to hide. The main issue in this
article is deciding whether society should have privacy or not. Solove begins to build his argument with different sources that he has found intriguing
and starts to add his own personal opinions towards the situations. His argument is more about the effects of privacy than just a person hiding their
mistakes Daniel Solove's argument is supporting privacy, he believes that everyone should have the privileged to have privacy, but he also doesn't care
that the government is watching the people, because the people don't really need to hide anything to begin with. The only problem towards the
government is how they manage the situation–he just wants the issues to change. In the beginning of the article, Solove starts by giving his thoughts
and opinions towards the government always gathering personal information about people from all over. He introduces the problems that occurs, when
the government starts by surveillance others– by this reason they are overlooked that assumption takes place. Also, Exclusion is considered another
problem that also has something do with the government. Exclusion happens when society is prevented on knowing about how their information is
being used from the government. Realizing that there is an unbalanced power between the government and every individual. . He tries to convince
his audience that there should be more refocusing on the subject, that way there can be more effort to protect the views of privacy. He also addresses
on how the law of privacy is failing on everybody, the government is not exactly helping. Daniel also introduces an example for Britain, having to do
with the government's surveillance cameras. In Britain, there is thousands of cameras that are set up all over towns and cities–it is to be monitored by
the officials. A circuit televisions' slogan is "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear". Most of the people's response due to their slogan is
that they don't care if they get profiled at all, because they really don't have anything to hide at all. Although, some do support the surveillance cameras

that this is taking place at night. "Upon the straits; of the French coast the light / Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of the England stand,". The body of
water that the character is adjacent to is the English channel. The English channel is the body of water between France and England and the
southeastern coast of England is where our character stands. From this location in Dover, England he can see the French light which is the closest
point where you can get to France without crossing the English channel. The character can hear the tides washing up and down the beach as he
stares off into the distance. He describes it as a "the grating roar" as the shells and other oceanic debris are pulled in and out of the coastal sands by
the water. "The eternal note of sadness" ends the first stanza which gives it a darker feeling compared to the beginning being calm and tranquil. The
speaker is being moved by the music of the setting which is a taste godlessness, emptiness , or loneliness. In the next stanza Our speaker

A Country Of Illusion Chapter 1 Summary

  • 1. A Country Of Illusion Chapter 1 Summary In chapter 1: A Country of Illusion, Reisner describes the exploration and settlement of the Western United States, more specifically California. Reisner explains that a Spaniard by the name of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado explored out this way for gold. Reisner then moves on and goes into detail about the Powell Expedition of 1869 and says that explorers found land that was dry and bare that showed no sign of vegetation which than got the name of the Great American Desert. After the discussion of the barren land, Reisner briefly discussed the Homestead Act and how it affected people and how it granted access and ownership of land to people. In Chapter 2: The Red Queen, Reisner began to describe the early settlement into California and the water issue that most came to face but in the act of describing this Reisner discussed what he said was a famous water story... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the amount of dams being built it was seen that it could become a problem from the amount of money being spent. Though there were many attempts to try and stop the growth of the many dams going up all this was being fought by President Carter but his many attempts were trumped due to bill and congress and also the election of President Reagan. In Chapter 10: Chinatown, Reisner begins by illustrating how there is a misunderstanding and how people say California is this place with prolific land with its beaches and green grasses, in all reality it is mainly semi–desert terrain. Reisner than talks about the 1960's State Water Project and how it had affected the economy and ecology of the U.S. then to wrap it up in line with this topic was the talk of the California Aqueduct, corporate farms, and the low cost of water and how issue came to arise due to all the water projects and irrigation throughout ... • 2. The Incredible Power of One Day in the Life of Ivan... The Incredible Power of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich It has been Russian writers in particular, who for two centuries have struggled against censorship and oppression to accomplish two great tasks: to create innovative and meaningful art, and to use that art to make a statement about a specifically Russian predicament. So often the theme was political, and so many generations of Russians criticised Mother Russia for her backward ways. Vissarion Belinsky's caustic admonitions in his "Letter to Gogol" were long a rallying cry for writers: "This is why, especially among us, universal attention is paid...to every manifestation of any so–called liberal trend, no matter how poor the writer's gifts...The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Much of GULAG was based on hundreds of letters and memoirs that former prisoners mailed to Solzhenitsyn after One Day was published." (Remnick, 119) When reading One Day it is overwhelming to comprehend and imagine this single dawn–to–dusk description, with the hindsight to understand that millions of multitudes of men and women suffered through such an evil scheme of servitude of cruelty. One Day was the first book of its kind to be printed in Russia. Miraculously, it was not only printed, but subsequently soldto the citizenry, who were actually allowed to read it. This unheard–of event occurred during a very delicate period of time known as the "Khrushchev thaw", when open condemnation of the "cult of personality" began to become commonplace, even expected. These brief years of relief enjoyed a momentary artistic flowering, and poets like Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Anderi Voznezensky, among others, began to emerge. "During Khrushchev's cultural thaw, plays or novels such as Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denizovich were the primary signs of new freedom." (Smith, 110) The response to this little book was immense, and an interesting documentation of varied responses to it is included in Leopold Lebedze's work, Solzhenitsyn: A Documentary ... • 3. Biological Diversity Found On Earth Speciation accounts for the remarkable biological diversity found on earth. However, it has been extremely difficult to conclusively demonstrate in mockingbirds. Remote oceanic islands have long been recognized as natural models for the study of evolutionary processes involved in diversification and speciation. Their remoteness and susceptibility to catastrophic disturbances by invasive species provide opportunities for colonization and divergence of populations through isolation, making islands fantastic study plots of diversification and speciation. Groups of islands may share a closely similar geological history and comparable climate, but due to these subtly different, or perhaps distinctly different, environments, their inhabitants... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Problematically, these characteristics are often under selection and can be inappropriate or misleading. For example, island forms may experience more rapid evolution in response to heightened genetic drift or natural selection due to small population sizes, lack or absence of interspecific competition, exploitation of new niches, and other evolutionary possibilities opened by island ecosystems (e.g. Carlquist 1965, 1974, Lack 1976). These scenarios could potentially explain why so many island species frequently pose such challenges in taxonomic classification. Another problem in regard to Galapagos mockingbird classification emerges out of the fact that only one form or species is found on any single island and the relative contributions of selection and drift to differentiation remain unclear. My objective is to provide evidence for evolution, specifically macroevolution by speciation and diversification in Galapagos Mockingbirds, scientifically termed Nesomimus, and articulate the many limitations at this time in understanding this sequence through the examination morphology. Archipelago location and Composition The Galapagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago located west of the South American coast in the Pacific Ocean and straddle the equator. The Galapagos archipelago comprises 13 major islands, 6 smaller islands, over 40 officially–named islets and many smaller unnamed islets and rocks. Of these islands, Isabela, formed by ... • 4. Irish Potato Famine Essay examples In the early 1800s life in Ireland wasn't easy, Irish citizens got by day to day by farming and relying on the potato. The potato was their main source of food and money. With out the potato the Irish would have nothing. No one was prepared for what was about to happen in 1845, the beginning of the Great Irish Potato Famine. The Irish Potato Famine was the worst tragedy in the history of Ireland. The outcome of the famine would result in hundreds of thousands dead, an failure of the economy in Ireland, and millions of emigrants forced to leave their home and country just to try to survive. The famine would effect countries other than Ireland as well. Some of these countries included England, America, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1845 a crop disease known as 'blight' would be introduced to Ireland. It was a disease that would cause potatoes to rot while they grew. It was from guano, which was part of a fertilizer that was imported from South America. The contaminated fertilizer was also distributed to other countries in Europe such as France, Germany, The Netherlands, and England. It was responsible for thousands of deaths in these countries but was soon eliminated, as these countries were not as dependent on the potato as the Irish were. The Irish discovered the problem when they found that they were harvesting black potatoes. At first they blamed the problem on poor weather, or insects. They just figured that it was another poor farming season. The actual spreading of the disease was that its pores were carried in the wind and land in pits where potatoes were to be planted. The disease would not die in the extreme winter cold and would double the problem for the next spring's crop. The first year, the Irish only saw it as another crop failure because it only effected a third of the harvest. It was later that season that they realized that they were about to face a famine. The Irish government would not give out aid to farmers because they felt that it would make the country look bad showing other people that the citizens could not care for themselves. The ... • 5. Analysis Of Edward Abbey's 'Desert Solitaire' Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey begins in the area surrounding Moab, Utah. He discusses his intense love and adoration for the land. This theme of laying out the land for the reader continues from Chapters 1–5. It is apparent the Abbey adores nature in its purest form. Abbey rarely has visitors of the human kind, he is more often visited by snakes, deer, birds, and other wildlife than the parks superintendent, the chief park ranger, and a few tourists here and there. Abbey finds himself a little lonely from time to time in the beginning of the book but by Chapter 3: The Serpents of Paradise he finds a friend. He first encounters a not so friendly creature, a faded midget, a poisonous rattlesnake lying underneath his doorstep. Abbey often finds himself talking to the animals in this book, so he decides to issue the snake a warning and remove it. When it comes back to the trailer a second time, Abbey keeps his promise and kills the snake. Eventually, he finds another snake, which he recognizes is an enemy to the rattlesnake, and he sets out to domesticate it. Abbey decides to take it on excursions with him, wrapping the snake around his waist underneath his shirt. Eventually, the snake was released and never returned. In Chapter 4, Abbey focuses more on the plants in the region, citing his favorite wildflower, the cliffrose, and going over his weekly schedules. His busiest days are the weekends when campers come, after he cleans, makes his rounds, takes a couple days off, restocks supplies, and then starts all over again. Chapter 5, is when things start to get heavy. It is at this point Abbey starts revealing how truly frustrated he is with the US government and the tourists. Abbey is fiercely protective of the park and soon discovers that roads will be paved in the park to increase tourism. He is horrified at the aspect of a new road because he sees automobiles as an enemy to the National Park industry. To Abbey, cars limit tourists from actually see the land, stating that a short distance on bike or foot is much more appreciated than a very long distance in a car. He also suggests a new plan for national parks in order to preserve their authenticity. Abbey thinks that tourists should travel to the campsites ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. United States Senator For Florida United States Senator for Florida, Marco Rubio once stated, "The Hispanic community understands the American Dream and have not forgotten what they were promised – that in the U.S., a free market system allows us all to succeed economically, achieve stability and security for your family and leave your children better off than yourselves." Every year Hispanics search the regions of Texas in search of this very opportunity to better themselves and especially their youth. One such region is the poverty stricken region that is the Rio Grande Valley. It is a region that has begun to accept its current role as nothing more than a region of widespread poverty and undervalued skill, but there is one man who will not sit idly by and watch as this region and the Hispanics who inhabit it are characterized by benighted stereotypes and filled with cruel insults. There is one man who will work diligently to better the region. That man is Eric Garza. Garza believes, "Future opportunity exists for Hispanics to excel and advance themselves and their families" (Garza). He sees that a disheartened culture has suddenly sprung up and is on the cusp of something greater than what people believe they can achieve. Eric Garza, a prominent figure in the RGV and State of Texas, has been working to better the welfare of Hispanics since he was a teenager, through his work with The Libre Initiative and his various involvements in local and statewide communities. • 7. The Negative Effects Of Gentrification Gentrification Gentrification is the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that is conforms to middle class taste. The term is often used negatively, suggesting the displacement of poor communities by rich outsiders. Often people who are displaced cannot find affordable housing, and this can lead to homelessness. Gentrification is hurting Colorado families because 1.) it causes prices increases for Denver metro rents, 2.) it displaces and breaks up families, and 3.) offers no affordable housing options for those displaced. () Definition. They kick people out of their house and then they raise the rent so they can't come back, they target specifically poor neighborhoods to make more money. One of the biggest impact is that it may destroy the culture of the neighborhood and friends and family have a chance of turning homeless. One of the main reasons is to make more money on the neighborhood because its to poor and they need to make more money. (4, June 2017)(Wikipedia)The term is usually used negatively. The first piece is the term and the definition. The second piece is the impact on friends, family, and culture. I think ____________________ because I think that gentrification is still getting worst and worst every day, The reason being is that the rent is always increasing and hasn't stopped yet. The impacts are that the population decreases in gentrified areas. And the ones who left are struggling to find a new home. Some evidence is that globeville saw an increase of 67% in home values in the last year, more people from out of the states come to denver colorado and don't mind paying the rent here because they don't live here. Due to the new marijuana law and how it was first legal in colorado made people from around the states move to colorado which increased the population and which increased the rent cost. It is getting worst and worst because the rent is constantly increasing over the years and that makes the low income people struggle and then later on can lead homelessness, and struggle to find a new home. The population is also increasing with more people from other states so they don't really mind paying high rents simply because they haven't been here long enough ... When Mexicans won independence from Spain in 1821, they encouraged trade with the United States via New Mexico. Lack of water and hostile Native Americans made the trip dangerous, but William Becknell, "Father of the Santa Fe Trail," left Missouri that year to arrive in Santa Fe a month–and–a–half later. After a large profit, Becknell continued to make trips, blazing the path that became known as the Santa Fe Trail. Soon, traders, visitors, and the military would regularly travel the route. This was mission was not something that was completed over night, but instead too many years to reach the goal. There were multiple disagreements and even some wars erected from this operation. In this paper I am going to discuss the how the Oregon Territory was one of the best claims we have owned and how the California and Texas Territory was one of the worst claims we have owned. The Oregon territory was originally occupied for many years by the Native Americans. During the 19th century the British and American citizens started moving into the territory and settling on the land. There was also speculation around the arrangements of pueblos and other buildings in regards to the cosmos around us. Because of their placement there is reason to believe that the Puebloan people incorporated astronomy into their architecture. We can learn about the personal beliefs of these people through the excavation of buildings erected on the site. As noted earlier, astronomy was a clear influence on architecture. Religion and community dynamics were brough fourth following the discovery that not all buildings were for residential use. Rather for spiritual and communal use (Munson, Bates and Nordby, 45). Although construction began towards the end of the time of the pueblo people in this region, the cliff dwellings seen at Mesa Verde are some of the best preserved in north America. • 15. Analysis Of Dances With Wolves And Unforgiven According to the film critic, Phillip French, "The Western has always been about America rewriting and reinterpreting her own past," if this is indeed the case, then the two most popular Westerns of the early 1990s reveal that many Americans had rejected the traditional interpretation of the Old West. The critically and commercially successful, Dances with Wolves and Unforgiven, repudiated the patriotic frontier myth that had characterised the Western when it was the preeminent genre in American cinema. Informed by new Western historiography, itself an expression of political concerns that had been moving into the American mainstream since the 1960s, the movies display a complex and nuanced understanding of the frontier experience. Dances with Wolves rejected the traditional narrative of the inherent superiority of the Anglo–American hero conquering both Native Americans and the wilderness, and also focused on the environmental destruction that accompanied the ideology of Manifest Destiny. Unforgiven would similarly reject the frontier myth, replacing the democratic, civilised frontier town, with a brutal regime in which white men's property rights prevail over any sense of justice. The film is noted for its self–reflexive nature, with a writer documenting and embellishing the tales of the Old West before the viewer's eyes. This self–reflexion indicates that Americans were re–evaluating the myths of the frontier, and seeing them for what they were, creations by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Within the camp a majority of the prisoners' time is spent dedicated to work assigned to them from the guards. Throughout the novel it is suggested that those who have a good work ethic are more likely to survive than those who do not. The ways in which they can survive include being hard–working, focusing intently on the work and taking on multiple job roles. This allows them to gain favours or an offering from fellow prisoners. This is principally shown through the two contrasting characters, Ivan Denisovich and Fetiuokov. Ivan Denisovich, also referred to as Shukhov, is described as extremely hard–working and is always occupied with jobs that may at first appear arbitrary. Although they appear to be arbitrary they are actually carefully and selectively chosen according to what Shukhov will gain in return from completing them. Ivan Denisovich is thought to be one of the best workers in the camp because of his positive attitude towards work. Whilst working on a wall there was need of a bricklayer so "Shukhov thought he might as well be one" because he believes that "if you can do two things with your hands, you'll soon pick up another ten." Clarence Darrow i Most often critically interpreted as a search for Divine justice, Kafka's The Trial, a fragmented and unfinished novel, appears to leave us with the same impression as the words above of Clarence Darrow. In other words, there is no justice. This assessment of Divine justice by Kafka works on two levels. On one level, he is illustrating the helpless nature of the individual when in conflict against an established bureaucracy. On another level, he is illustrating the existential dilemma of man in the face of a godless, indifferent, and often hostile universe. A search for justice byJosef K. finds no justice in ... In vain, much as many people try to find meaning and justice out of court, Josef K.'s efforts to discover why he is accused and must suffer are in vain. Yet, his character and his sins are conventional, and he has no bold or threatening ambitions. All he can do is ask questions, but he receives no answers that would clarify the bureaucratic system into which he has been thrust. Just like existential awareness undermines the entire rational structure of Divine justice, so, too, the alternative hypotheses, the multiple explanations, the different interpretations, and the uncertainty Josef K. experiences, serve to undermine the whole rational structure of the justice system. Josef K. comes to understand the socially constructed, arbitrary, and absurd nature of the justice system, and, justice itself "The truth allegedly resides above the realms of justice and injustice."iii This literary analysis will focus on how Josef K.'s experiences in The Trial demonstrate not only the corrupt justice system of the era but also the absurd and futile attempt to seek an arbitrary concept like justice in an existential realm. • 31. Analysis Of Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn, A Russian Author With... Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn, a Russian author with personal experience of labor camp conditions, relates the experiences of his fellow prisoners by showing the world that humanity can be maintained in the most degrading of places. Such a theme can be observed closely in his novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, first published in 1962. As the title suggests, the novel is about a day in the Gulag (prison) from dawn to dusk from Ivan's perspective. The Gulag is designed to strip the Zeks of their individual identities and dignity. The zek's names are taken from them and replaced by numbers: 'S 854, "The Tartar read from the white stripe that had been stitched to the back of his black jacket," (15). Then their personal belongings are taken ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the stance taken by Solzhenitsyn, Ivan maintains his dignity by resisting the idea of indulging himself with food. In the novel the author raises an important question about whether food is a necessity or valuable to humanity (dignity). When Ivan recalls a prisoner who talked about the types of Zeks who manage to live: "Those who lick other men 's leftovers, those who count on the doctors to pull them through, and those who squeal on their buddies," (8), he says, do not survive. Though Ivan knows that the prisoners do survive at the cost of their own humanity, he respects and agrees with most of Kuziomin 's statement: "You're sure to be given something to eat there, though there were plenty of others at that game, more than plenty– and, what's worse, if you found a bowl with something left in it you could hardly resist licking it out," (7). For Ivan, avoiding the mess hall in the morning or after the meal was important, as he might be tempted into leaving his dignity for a little amount of food. This is a significant step towards conserving his morality and surviving his sentence. In Solzhenitsyn perspective, keeping away from the food represents the idea of control over one's body. This is highly significant because living in the Gulag, where the authority treats zeks in the most dehumanizing of ways, one needs to be able to command themselves, controls their desires to stay intact their dignity. ... After contemplating this question for about a week i came to the conclusion that my dream vacation was in colorado. All of the activities and sights i would love to see are in colorado. My dream job is in the cannabis industry and colorado is the cannabis capital of the country. Not to mention i've heard the community is very positive and beneficial. Without a doubt in my mind, colorado is the ideal getaway for me. The Centennial state is one of the most beautiful states when it comes to sightseeing. It has every climate a person could ask for. It is home to arid deserts, rocky mountains, and river canyons. Colorado contains the rocky mountain national park, which protects the mountains forest and alpine tundra. The cattle drives, and cowboys shaped the west, the cowtowns, and the people. After the Civil War, there was as shortage of food, mainly beef, so the people of the west, and the ranchers were depended upon for the food, beef. With no, or few railroads, the cowboys were forced to drive the cattle long distances. The cow towns were practically made by the cowboys and the need for beef. They were called boom towns. Boom towns were towns with a few houses, and a general store. With cowboys coming through, the towns boomed, with give or take 27 saloons, 8 gambling halls, and a boot hill were normally added. The towns closest to Texas had bigger, and better attractions. They were the main stops for the cattle, for selling, and then moved down the state's. • 35. Westward Expansion In The West The influence of the westward expansion in the West is still evident today. Influences such as land, and the individualist mindset remain the same today. Also, a lot of ways the frontier land today is isolated compared to the West we live in today, too. The frontier emphasized the spirit of nationalism and individualism in the United States. As mentioned amongst the themes of the West, thefrontier experience converted settlers into individualists, who hoped to gain opportunity in the lands of the West. The ample amount of resources and the greater social mobility of frontier areas instilled a form of individualism in American frontiersman. This is similar to the individualism present today, for instance in politics and other government affairs, people dislike of governmental interference in their affairs, similar to the people that had migrated to the West so they could be more independent and have less governmental interference. Migrating somewhere new becomes an unfamiliar environment, as travelers adapted and devised new techniques and objects to cope with an unknown land. This can also be seen now in Americans being able to adapt to innovations and keep innovations and ideas of the Western front. In many rural areas, the concept of land and ranches, how to care for them, and the small settlement is still evident today, especially in the state we live in. Although the history of the American frontier is glorified for the vanquishing of Indian and the march of manifest destiny that made America great and special, this is still evident today in society. For instance, in media today, the Dakota Pipelines were on Native American tribal land, yet we as Americans used the power of authority to make them leave their land for the supposed greater benefit of America. That was the notion in the past, and still is the notion today, Native Americans were not considered Americans, although the inhabited areas and lands way before we had. The representation of the West showcased triumph of "civilization" over "savagery." Also, back in the 19th century, scholarly essays were written that stated moving west separated Americans from their European roots, those who were from there. This is evident today as well, ... After the reconstruction period, the United Stated continued to adjust well as we see it change economically and politically. Though the adjustment continued to go well, the change that occurs after reconstruction is emphasized with industrialization and the impact that industrialization has in certain regions of the U.S and on the people. Along with the new economy came with complications that affected the improvement of conditions in work and in life. During the Gilded Age, there is a difference between the North and South economies. When industrialization started to consume the United States, the North quickly adapted to the change as cities begin to develop allowing citizens to move to industrial cities in search of new opportunities such as employment. On page 592 it states "the rapid expansion of factory production, mining, and railroad construction in all parts of the country except the South signaled the transition from Lincoln's America to a mature industrial society" demonstrating how the South failed to adapt to the new industrial society. The South did not really adapt to industrialization as they stuck to their agricultural ways. The new industrial society created the interest of the American West. The American West begins to capture the attention of many people as it becomes an area of opportunity. On page 602, Frederick Jackson Turner argued that on the Western frontier the ... • 37. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn 's One Day Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich explores the man's struggle to survive in the trying circumstances of a Soviet Gulag. Though the novel leads the reader through the horrific conditions in one of the work camps, it does not focus on the lack of hope that the men feel but it focuses on the perseverance and resilience of the prisoners. Shukhov's character shines through as a prominent example of the courage of the souls in the work camps. Further, Alyoshka proves to never give up in the face of extreme conditions and is always around to help his gang. Finally, Tyurin's undying devotion to leadership provides a refreshing look into the resilience of the prisoners. Solzhenitsyn expertly constructs intricate layers... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, the author reveals through Shukhov's actions the determination that mankind experienced in the gulags. Shukhov takes a job, which could normally be considered a gruelling task, and turns it into an act of fortitude. As the sole thing he sees is "the wall in front of him" (97) and he shouts to not "give up yet, boys!" (109), he strongly exemplifies the perseverance of the prisoners. The task that he is given should dishearten him but instead, boosts his morale and thus, his determination. The character of Shukhov is crafted as a glaring example of the resilience men have in a gulag, and this is additionally explored through the characterization of Alyoshka. Solzhenitsyn creates the compelling character of Alyoshka who stays true to himself and to others in the face of adversity. Staying faithful to his religion gives him the strength he requires in order to focus on the positive outcomes of the gulags. Contrary to popular opinion, the author uses Alyoshka's dialogue to exhibit the positivity as he says to "'[b]e glad [they are] in prison'" so that they "'have time to think about [their] soul[s]'" (177). He regards his imprisonment as a time to reflect upon his spirit and the kind of person he is which is a true accomplishment of the human spirit in the calamity of a gulag. Further, the author uses his actions to display his steadfast nature that causes him to be of tremendous help to his gang. His want to be helpful is glaringly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Klondike Gold Rush In William Robert Morrison's Eldorado William Robert Morrison is a Canadian historian who wrote the article "Eldorado", in which he gives a detailed account of the Klondike gold rush of 1897–99 and how difficult of a time that was for the prospectors who travelled in hopes to strike riches. No matter which way people went into Dawson City, the challenges were tremendous. Morrison believes that the Klondike gold rush is what made the westerly region of the North a part of the modern world. During this time an economic recession had a grip on the country; with the gold rush boom the economy would improve. In this article Morrison writes about how differently Canadians and Americans acted throughout this time. Americans were violent, riddled with gangsters and mob violence, while Canadians in Dawson City were prohibited from the use of firearms; because of this not a single murder occurred in a Dawson City saloon during the gold rush. During the gold rush period businesses were closed on Sundays, and Mounties kept the law in order. Even 118 years ago Canadians were known to be kind, and the Mounties were a prominent figure. • 39. Summary Of Daniel Solove The Nothing To Hide Argument Daniel J. Solove's "The Nothing to Hide Argument", an article discussing why society has privacy when there is nothing to hide. The main issue in this article is deciding whether society should have privacy or not. Solove begins to build his argument with different sources that he has found intriguing and starts to add his own personal opinions towards the situations. His argument is more about the effects of privacy than just a person hiding their mistakes Daniel Solove's argument is supporting privacy, he believes that everyone should have the privileged to have privacy, but he also doesn't care that the government is watching the people, because the people don't really need to hide anything to begin with. The only problem towards the government is how they manage the situation–he just wants the issues to change. In the beginning of the article, Solove starts by giving his thoughts and opinions towards the government always gathering personal information about people from all over. He introduces the problems that occurs, when the government starts by surveillance others– by this reason they are overlooked that assumption takes place. Also, Exclusion is considered another problem that also has something do with the government. Exclusion happens when society is prevented on knowing about how their information is being used from the government. Realizing that there is an unbalanced power between the government and every individual. . He tries to convince his audience that there should be more refocusing on the subject, that way there can be more effort to protect the views of privacy. He also addresses on how the law of privacy is failing on everybody, the government is not exactly helping. Daniel also introduces an example for Britain, having to do with the government's surveillance cameras. In Britain, there is thousands of cameras that are set up all over towns and cities–it is to be monitored by the officials. A circuit televisions' slogan is "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear". The character can hear the tides washing up and down the beach as he stares off into the distance.
