Space exploration
1. WRITING 1
Some years ago, the NASA set up a 10 million dollars projectto create a
pen whoseink would work in zero gravity. The Soviet Union used a pencil
instead. Then, do we really spend too much money on spaceexploration?
I do not think so.
Firstly, investing billionaire sums of dollars in projects like finding water on
Mars may seem pointless and frustrating for somepeople, but this is only
the crown of a big process. Itis not the water itself that will benefit us. In
fact, mostof our planet is water, so the development of the theories and
techniques required to fulfill such a mission is what will really pay off in
the future.
Secondly, had it not been for the spacerace, there would not be Internet
satellites or mobile phones. These are justsimple examples of the
everyday gadgets and inventions that we use every day.
All in all, human have always felt curious aboutspace. However, it is such
as unknown field that it constantly demands the speculation and creation
of new manners of doing science and technology. Therefore, I think that
spaceexploration is not a wasteof money, but an enormous investment in
the development and improvementof our own world. DIEGO SANTIAGO
WRITING 2
If you asked people aboutspace exploration, the two most likely answers
that you would get would be opposite. While some interviewed would see
it as a potentially useful investment, the other ones would think that it is a
wasteof money. Well, who is right then?
Firstly, in order to talk aboutany exploration or investigation, we must
think about its possiblebenefits. Knowledgeabout spacehelps us finding
dangers and resources. However, after a couple of years, scientists have
found all the objects that may endanger the Earth’s inhabitants in millions
2. of years, and the only resources they’vediscovered areat light years from
here.
In addition to the fact that it is a non-fruitfulactivity, exploring space
involves many brilliant scientists and engineers who saw this study field as
a work option. If they couldn’t work at it, they could find and design new
physic laws and inventions that would be more usefulfor the human race.
In a nutshell, even though exploring space was in the past a profitable
investment, but nowadays this money should be used in other areas.
There may come the day when space exploration will be necessary again,
but we’restill far from it. ANTONIO NOGALES
WRITING 3
Every day we know a little more about our planet and space, but is space
exploration a waste of money? I strongly believe that it is very important
for several reasons.
Firstof all, there are a lot of kinds of very usefulsatellites nowadays, for
example, the meteorological ones that can save many lives if they warn us
of a dangerous hurricane.
Secondly, thanks to communication satellites, we can do all types of things
like watching TV, talking on the phone or listening to the radio.
In conclusion, frommy point of view, space exploration isn’t a wasteof
money becauseit is a very interesting topic that could help us improve our
planet or we could even go to live to another planet like Mars! ESTHER
GONZÁLEZ
WRITING 4
Space explorations have been carried out to examine thoroughly our Solar
Systemfor many years. This has often supposed a debate that couldn’tbe
summarized in a nutshell because there are people who think this item
supposes a wasteof money sinceit isn’t vital for the human life and others
who think that it is so importantso as to get to know better what
surrounds us and to foresee catastrophes and I’m going to supportthe
second option.
3. Firstof all, space explorations have been helping us for many years, to
know all the characteristics of our planet and of the planets that surround
us. This is very usefulin several fields of Physics and chemistry which are
essential for our daily life. Moreover, hundreds of years ago, astronomers
were trying to develop mysteries of the space, and as a result, this leads
us to think that there has always been interest and curiosity aboutthis
topic.
Secondly, the consciousness of other celestial bodies helps us to foresee
the impacts of meteorites, the moon’s phases, if there is life in other
planets… For instance, the fact of detecting a meteorite which is going to
crash into the Earth is of crucial importance becausewe would haveto get
ready and try to diminish the possibledamages. Futhermore, if we find
something usefulin another planet, as somesubstancethat is limited in
the Earth, we could bring it here in the future to get profitof it.
In short, I believe that the knowledgeof everything that surrounds the
Earth is important, since we aren’t the centre of the Universeand to have
certainty of whatis happening around us turns out very interesting.
Probably, it is true that it is not the mostimportant problem in the world
and there are more important issues, butI think that in a futurewe will be
able to travel to other planets and in order to be about to do it, weneed
to know them. ROSA COBOS
WRITING 5
Nowadays, spaceexploration is a controversialissue. A lot of people say
that it is not important to explore our galaxy becauseit incurs expenses
and they consider it is a wasteof money. The other part think that if we
continue investigating it, we will achieve meaningful advances. I agree
with the second explanation.
Firstly, as far as I am concerned NASA is developing a tool which can
destroy meteorites in case of impact with our planet, so space
explorations can save our lives one day.
Secondly, with this investigation wecan know what things surround our
planet and the dangers that there are in the Universe. By 2200, someone
4. may havedeveloped special travels or something like this which it would
allow that the people know by themselves how the Universeis.
In conclusion, I’d rather that spaceexploration continues developing and
improving although it caused a lot of expenses, since one day our lives will
depend on it. JUAN JOSÉ AGUILERA
WRITING 6
Nowadays, welive in an Internetworld where everyonecan be informed
about different issues. Wehave the knowledge in our hands, we mustonly
do one click to have everything in frontof our eyes, including the space.
Although this topic is not the most important, considering that people
have real problems that they need to solve, that are worrying and on
which to spend their money.
Firstly, I’d like to express that every topic which makes us moreintelligent
and cultured is useful, but there are things which can change lifes and in
my opinion, the spaceexploration is not one of them. Despite the fact that
it is interesting, it is not a real trouble and we will be as happy as usual
even if we don’t know anything more about it since the mostsignificant
part has already been discovered.
Secondly, in our planet there are so many problems such as pollution,
poverty, hunger and many more. Therefore, weshould useour energy and
money on them and not trying to discover new things about the space
because it won’tmake us happier as when we make an effort to solve
these issues that can change our lives.
To sum up, I prefer to saveour money to investigate things like cancer or
other illnesses better than the space. We are in a world so we mustturn it
into a good place to live and we must keep trying it to get positiveresults.
Maybe in 50 years, wewill be living in a paradiseand in that moment we
will waste our money on space, but before that, we need to solve real
problems. MARÍA JESÚS MUÑOZ
5. WRITING 7
Nowadays the spaceinvestigation progresses very quickly, but
investigating is not the same as exploring because the second one means
the necessity of a lot of money to get all the necessary materials.
In my opinion, the spaceexploration is unnecessary thesedays. Itis
because the humanity prefers to go to spacethan investigating their own
planet. I think they should invest all the money they usefor space
exploration in the ocean investigation. There are a lot we don’tknow
about the bottom of the sea, there are animal species and plants that the
humanity hasn’teven discovered.
In conclusion, I think that the ocean exploration is the firststep in the
humanity development, it means that a great knowledge aboutthe Earth
is perhaps better than putting the astronauts’ lives at risk. ÁLVARO
URBANO
WRITING 8
In this day and age, spaceexploration is very important for some scientific
communities which spend a lot of money on these activities. Although
there are many people who don’tagree, I think that space exploration is
necessary.
Firstly, I believe that we should know our origin. The spaceresearch helps
us discover how the formation of the planet occurred and to know its
features. The information that these missions collect can be usefulfor our
planet to prevent naturaldisasters like earthquakes.
Secondly, I think that technology and computers will be able to discover
live on some planets or the necessary conditions for humans. For this
reason, I believe that governments should spend money on the spacerace
because maybein the future we can organize trips to the moon or Mars.
In conclusion, in my opinion space exploration is not a wasteof money
because it can be very usefulfor humans and I think that we should
promote someideas about space so that young people can be awareof
the importanceof our planet in the Universe. ANABEL TORO
