To answer the first question I would say absolutely yes. I can use myself as an example, when I am at work I act differently than when I am at home. I interact differently with my peers than I do with my wife and children. Mini-Lecture: Welcome to Week 5.
It is useful to use a social systems framework for understanding our community. When we do this we view a community as a social system composed of a number of subsystems (for example, neighborhoods or businesses or agencies existing in the same physical space and that are all linked together by some common goals). We can also look at a community as a subsystem of the state in which it is located. In addition, human beings are individual (not social) systems in their own right, but are also subsystems of their communities. We know from our experience that a community can further the growth and development of an individual or family, or it can limit or even destroy that subsystem’s progress. Consequently, it is important to understand that our community has had a rather profound effect on our personal development. So this week we also look at what influences have shaped our lives and helped us develop into the person we are today. A reflective look at ourselves is an assignment of significant importance.
It is understandable that people want to change some things about or in their community and can be referred to as "change agents". That term is a little impersonal for me. It's a pretty stiff and stoic term for what we may feel strongly on an emotional level. I want something more warm and fuzzy—like “the make a difference” person so I would like to "change" the term to "make a difference person".
In reality our volunteer work is an attempt to change something. Either making someone's life, or some piece of their life, or the life experience in our community better--to MAKE A DIFFERENCE. So volunteers (and others) become change agents. We may also endeavor to change entire community views on a particular topic or concern or we may want to change a condition or situation that exists in our community. So we begin the process. In some situations we can do it by direct contact--person to person. In some other situations (like broad community change) we have to have helpers and so we form coalitions with others who wish to see the same changes occur so that we can impact conditions that require multi-level or higher level change.
As “make a difference persons” we continually shift back and forth between attention to individuals, subsystems, and to the larger system (community or state, etc) of which they are a part. This ability to look at multi-levels sequentially and/or simultaneously is a hallmark of community change efforts. This becomes a pretty sophisticated process but one that we should not back away from because we may not know what to do right now to change things. What will it look like? That is a tough question. Let’s not put the cart before the horse. Take a step back for a
moment. In Unit I, we brought into the conversation research by Glickman, Fullan, Epstein et al., Sergiovanni,
and your textbook author, Fiore. In Unit II, we will explore three huge topics: change, motivation, and process.
One of the constants in education is change. We are all products of our environment and upbringing. Those
who have gone before us have impacted who we are and how we view the world. The transformation is a
slow process. When we view systems holistically, we can see the changes that have taken place, and, more
often than not, we can trace the steps that took place to get us to this point in time. Despite everyone
understanding that change takes place, this does not imply we like the change process. The vast majority of
us resist change. Later in this unit lesson, we will discuss the start of a process to build relationships internally
and externally. The key to this process and the acceptance of change is keeping it simple. Henry W adsworth
Longfellow (as cited in Mycoskie, 2011) stated, “In character, in manner, in style, in all things, the supreme
excellence is simplicity” (p. 97). With Longfellow’s comments tucked away in our brain, we will seek simplicity
encased in quality as we move forward as teacher leaders.

We have learned how a society's culture can influence people. There are other elements in society, however, that also affect our decisions and behavior. Sociological research has found that in addition to culture, social structure and groups also significantly impact many of our individual choices. Our position in the social structure affects our behaviors, attitudes, and ideas. For example, an important element of social structure are groups. We belong to a variety of different groups. Decades of research have documented the impact of group conformity on the individual. Although people tend to often believe that they act as individuals and aren't impacted by others, research has found this is usually not the case. The Milgram experiment in your Resources is a great example. Milgram (1963) examined conformity and obedience and found that people are highly influenced by authority and the demands of conformity, even to the point that we will inflict pain on another person to obey authority.
Sociologists also study education and how it is impacted by a society's culture and structure. The purpose of education is to provide knowledge (facts, skills, cultural norms) to members of a society. In the United States, education teaches us not just skills, but also how to be effective citizens. Education transmits the dominant culture, ensuring that children understand cultural norms and values. Educational attainment impacts life outcomes—it affects our occupation, earnings, work conditions, and health. Thus, education is related to social inequality. This week I have chosen to discuss common heat sources identified by the NFPA in being common causes of ignition in home fires. The NFPA published the
Home Structure Fires
report in October of 2019 that outlines these fires and supports the conclusions with data from 2018. The following heat sources were listed as common denominators in home structure fires:
Cooking
Heating
Electrical distribution and lighting
Intentional
Smoking materials
Home fires are responsible for seventy-nine percent of fire fatalities and seventy-three percent of fire injuries (Ahrens, 2019). These ignition sources have proven to be the most prevalent forms of starting these types of fires. In addition, it was reported that most fire fatalities were males over the age of 55 (Ahrens, 2019). These fires are generally occurring in the colder months between November and March during the hours of 5 PM to 8 PM when, “… many people are coming home from work, are preparing dinner, or are engaging in other household activities” (Ahrens, 2019).
These ignition sources are common in many households. Cooking fires can vary greatly from stove tops, ovens, grease, toasters, empty coffee pots on heaters, tea pots, etc. Smoking materials, however, are isolated to pipes, cigarettes, and their associated equipment (lighters, matches, etc.). Heating sources, just like cooking fires, have several different ignition source types to include furnaces, stoves (pellet, gas, oil, etc.), chimney ignition, etc. Electrical distribution and lighting malfunctions or surges caused roughly 7 percent of home structure fires and accounted for ten percent of residential deaths (Ahrens, 2019). Lastly, intentionally set residential fires accounted huge amounts of property loss and resulted in 380 fatalities, sixty four percent were linked to suicide (Ahrens, 2019).
It is critical that during home fire safety visits and non-emergent medical calls that fire departments take the time to address these matters with their citizens. Most fire deaths occurred while victims were asleep, are physically disabled (mostly geriatric), or impaired by alcohol or drugs (Ahrens, 2019). These fires are preventable and should be addressed in the public setting when appropriate.

We have learned how a society's culture can influence people. There are other elements in society, however, that also affect our decisions and behavior. Sociological research has found that in addition to culture, social structure and groups also significantly impact many of our individual choices. Our position in the social structure affects our behaviors, attitudes, and ideas. For example, an important element of social structure are groups. We belong to a variety of different groups. Decades of research have documented the impact of group conformity on the individual. Although people tend to often believe that they act as individuals and aren't impacted by others, research has found this is usually not the case. The Milgram experiment in your Resources is a great example. Milgram (1963) examined conformity and obedience and found that people are highly influenced by authority and the demands of conformity, even to the point that we will inflict pain on another person to obey authority.

In the United States, education teaches us not just skills, but also how to be effective citizens. This week I have chosen to discuss common heat sources identified by the NFPA in being common causes of ignition in home fires. The NFPA published the
Home Structure Fires
report in October of 2019 that outlines these fires and supports the conclusions with data from 2018. The following heat sources were listed as common denominators in home structure fires:
Cooking
Heating
Electrical distribution and lighting
Intentional
Smoking materials
Home fires are responsible for seventy-nine percent of fire fatalities and seventy-three percent of fire injuries (Ahrens, 2019). These ignition sources have proven to be the most prevalent forms of starting these types of fires. In addition, it was reported that most fire fatalities were males over the age of 55 (Ahrens, 2019). These fires are generally occurring in the colder months between November and March during the hours of 5 PM to 8 PM when, “… many people are coming home from work, are preparing dinner, or are engaging in other household activities” (Ahrens, 2019).
These ignition sources are common in many households. Cooking fires can vary greatly from stove tops, ovens, grease, toasters, empty coffee pots on heaters, tea pots, etc. Smoking materials, however, are isolated to pipes, cigarettes, and their associated equipment (lighters, matches, etc.). Heating sources, just like cooking fires, have several different ignition source types to include furnaces, stoves (pellet, gas, oil, etc.), chimney ignition, etc. Electrical distribution and lighting malfunctions or surges caused roughly 7 percent of home structure fires and accounted for ten percent of residential deaths (Ahrens, 2019). Lastly, intentionally set residential fires accounted huge amounts of property loss and resulted in 380 fatalities, sixty four percent were linked to suicide (Ahrens, 2019).
It is critical that during home fire safety visits and non-emergent medical calls that fire departments take the time to address these matters with their citizens. Most fire deaths occurred while victims were asleep, are physically disabled (mostly geriatric), or impaired by alcohol or drugs (Ahrens, 2019). These fires are preventable and should be addressed in the public setting when appropriate.

Roles are patterns of behavior that we use every day to reflect our social status, such as a role of parent, worker, daughter/son, student,neighbor, etc. Each of these roles is associated with a different status. Social institutions are systems and structures that shape the activities of groups and individuals in society. Family, education, and religion are examples of social institutions that affect the everyday lives of people at a micro-level. Complete the 10-slide Socialization and Self-Identity presentation template on socialization and its influence on our self-identities. Instructions for what to include are provided in the speaker notes section for each slide, which can be accessed by clicking the View tab at the top, then clicking Notes .
