2. STEAM,
A CRITICAL UTILITY
Steam is critical in many operational processes.
However, working with steam is dangerous.
Selecting the right hose, couplings and installation method is
important to be able to work safely with steam.

3. STEAM: A CRITICAL UTILITY!
Popcorning effect
Danger to the user
The service life of steam hoses is drastically reduced
when the condensation is not drained from the hose
after use. This condensation or vapour penetrates the
pores of the inner wall of the hose and is retained. The
next time the hose is connected to the steam network,
the retained moisture in the inner wall expands by a
factor of 1600; because of this sudden increase in
volume, air bubbles are created in the inner wall that
blow rubber particles from the wall.
Rubber steam hoses, which are affected on the inside
by ‘popcorning’, often display no damage on the outside.
As a result, the hose poses an immediate danger
to users in its vicinity. The damaged braid, which is
invisible from the outside, can no longer withstand the
operating pressure, which causes the hose to burst. The
clamp connection can no longer grip the coupling and
the connection detaches from the hose. This can result
in serious injury or even death to operatives as well as
major damage to installations.

1600 x
The surface of the inner wall will resemble popcorn.
Every time the hose is used, at start-up the
‘popcorning’ effect is exacerbated with particles of
rubber being ejected from the inner wall of the hose.
These particles will contaminate the steam network or
the product and block the system. The moist vapour,
which is found in the rubber of the hose, will also
force its way outwards and degrade and weaken the
steel braid of the hose.

4. Steam graph
Saturated and, to a certain extent, wet steam
has a ‘lubricating’ effect on the rubber
inner wall of the hose. However, superheated
and therefore dry steam slowly hardens the
rubber inner wall due to the process of
vulcanisation. The result is a reduction in the
service life of the rubber. Superheated steam
can sometimes be created unintentionally
when the operating pressure is suddenly
reduced, for example when a valve is suddenly
opened or at a transition from a small to a
much larger diameter pipe.

Temperature (C°)
By displaying the combination of operating
pressure and temperature, the steam diagram
shows whether the steam is saturated or
superheated.
Saturated steam can either contain or be
free of unevaporated water particles and
consequently be either ‘wet’ or ‘dry’.
The area below the ‘saturated steam’ line
represents hot water. The area above the line
represents superheated steam. The service
life of steam hoses is shortened every time the
hose is exposed to superheated steam.

5. THE HIGHEST QUALITY STEAM HOSE
BR8 INFERNO
Exceeds the EN ISO 6134-2A norm
In the last 20 years, GOODALL®, our manufacturer, has
carried out extensive research into rubber steam hoses.
Not only have the rubber compounds used for the inner
wall and outer cover been continually improved, the
material and coating of the steel inserts has also received
considerable attention during the development of the
GOODALL® rubber steam hoses.
Practical tests and test procedures, which approximate
the most extreme applications for rubber steam hoses,
have taught GOODALL® much about the medium of steam
and what defines the ultimate steam hose.

Appearance of popcorning
Even a special EPDM compound still has a porous
structure that allows microscopically small water and
steam particles to collect in the wall and cause the
‘popcorning’ effect. See photos on this page.

®
For the inner wall of the GOODALL BR8 INFERNO steam
hose, GOODALL® developed a special, impermeable
rubber compound, which when extruded is extremely
smooth.

Service life
Extensive tests of the GOODALL® BR8 INFERNO confirm
that this hose has an extremely long service life, sometimes
more than three times as long as other hoses.
After a few weeks
After the test phase
The use of rubber steam hoses offers advantages over
the often-used stainless steel hoses. For example, rubber
steam hoses are less susceptible to buckling, have a
chemically resistant outer cover, are less vulnerable to
external damage and can therefore be quickly repaired
and retested on site.
After the Test phase: No sign of popcorning

6. SAFE USE
Steam is extremely dangerous. You should therefore
choose both a safe coupling and a safe method of
installation.
The Goodall® BR8 INFERNO hose has been specially
developed to guarantee safe use when used in
combination with one of our LMC-Couplings® for steam
applications.
All LMC-Couplings® for steam applications comply with
EN ISO 14423 and have a special, strong serrated hose
tail that has a safety collar.
The long, robust safety clamps, which also comply with
EN ISO 14423, guarantee the safety of the connection.
This connection method, where the correct hose tail is
used in combination with the appropriate safety clamp,
guarantees the user a high quality hose with a assembly
leak-free clamp connection, even after intensive use.

7. STEAM COUPLINGS
SUMMARY
The BR8 INFERNO hose is fitted with LMC-Couplings®, a comprehensive and
innovative range of products that includes the unique DINBO couplings.
All the steam couplings and safety clamps comply with EN ISO 14423 and
have a special serrated hose tail that has a safety collar. The hose connection
is guaranteed for the maximum operating pressure of 160 bar at 20°C or 18
bar at 210°C.
DINBO STEAM COUPLINGS
DINBO: a fast and operationally secure steam coupling.
This robust coupling is indestructible.
The large wing nut is made of strong stainless steel or
galvanised steel. Its shape makes it easier for the operator,
even when wearing safety gloves, to make a fast and secure
connection.

11. INSTALLATION AND TESTING
INSTALLATION
Our professional production staff fit the correct LMCCouplings® for steam applications to every GOODALL® BR8
INFERNO steam hose together with the correct safety clamps.
They employ the latest technical developments and use the
latest installation techniques.
Years of experience and detailed installation procedures
guarantee this quality process.
TESTING
Every GOODALL® BR8 INFERNO steam hose fitted with
LMC-Couplings® for steam applications is tested in-house
according to EN ISO 6134-2A at a test pressure of 90 bar
(5x the maximum operating pressure). On request, the test
certificates are supplied with the hose.
RETESTING
Steam hoses must be pressure tested every six months at
90 bar to comply with EN ISO 6134-2A and minimise the
dangers posed by invisible internal damage to hose or fittings.
External visual inspection alone is not sufficient.
ERIKS Hose Technology offer a comprehensive on-site
inspection and testing service including hydrostatic pressure
testing. Call us to discuss your needs.
