Chewing Gum
Although chewing gum isn't an amazing invention I like chewing gum and I wondered who made
this wonderful invention. The first chewing gum was called resin made from the sap of spruce trees.
The New Englanders settled and found this chewing gum and want to make it more. In 1848, John
Curtis made and sold the first chewing gum. They called it the State of Maple Pure Spruce Gum.
Even though John Curtis invented it in 1848, scientists think North Europeans were chewing birch
wood tar around 9,000 years ago! Even the Ancient Maya shewed a substance called chicle. Curtis
built the first chewing gum factory in the 1850s. the factory stood in Portland, Maine. As it turns out
resin was not very good to chew on because it became brittle after it was

Biography of President Andrew Jackson
I agree that with the rating of sixth overall that Andrew Jackson received for his presidency. Andrew
Jackson was the seventh president of the United States and a member of the Democratic Party.
Jackson made many positive and negative decisions as the president of the United States. Andrew
Jackson expanded the power of the president and he also expanded democracy during his time as the
president of the United States. Andrew Jackson has gone down as one of the best presidents in
United States history and that's because he did many great things to improve the United States.
Throughout his presidency he constantly abused his power as the president and did many things that
expanded the powers of the president. One of the biggest things that President Jackson did while in
office was pass the Indian Removal Act. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was when Jackson forced
all the Indians to move to the land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase, while the Supreme Court
declared this unconstitutional. Many of the Indians went peacefully, but many of the Indians also
decided to protest and take it to the Supreme Court (Darrenkamp). While the court did side with the
Indians Jackson and Congress forced the Indians to give up their land. The federal troops were
called in to escort the Indians to their new land. Fifteen thousand Indians were forced to move and
while on their way about a third of the Indians died, and this event became to be known as the Trail
of Tears (Darrenkamp). Jackson had

Andrew Jackson 's Views On The Election Of 1824
Andrew Jackson's path to presidency was unique. In the election of 1824, there were four main
candidates, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, William H. Crawford, and Andrew Jackson. Jackson
gained the most popular votes of the four Democratic–Republican candidates, but not the majority
of electoral votes to win the election. Henry Clay, who was eliminated from the election, held a
decisive position as the speaker of the House of Representatives. Clay was in a position to throw the
election to the candidate of his choice. Clay threw his support behind Adams since he had led some
of the strongest attacks against Jackson. Rather than the nation's presidency go to a man he
abhorred, Clay secured the White House for Adams. In return Adams named ... Show more content

Northerners supported tariffs because tariffs helped them compete with British factories. The South's
economy was based on farming. Southerners imported their manufactured goods. Tariffs made
imported goods more expensive for southern farmer which led to their opposition. Angry
Southerners called the tariff the Tariff of Abominations. The new tariff added fuel to the growing
sectional differences plaguing the young nation. When Andrew Jackson took office in 1829, he was
forced to respond to the growing conflict over tariffs. Vice President John C. Calhoun joined his
fellow southerners in protest when Congress passed the Tariff of Abominations. In response to the
tariff, Calhoun drafted the South Carolina Exposition and Protest. It urged states to nullify the Tariff
of Abominations and used it to argue that since the states created the national government they
decided when the national laws apply. Calhoun's theory was controversial, and it drew some fierce
challengers. Many of them were from the northern states that had benefited from increased tariffs.
These opponents believed that the American people, not the individual states, made up the Union.
Conflict between the supporters and the opponents of nullification deepened. The issue of
nullification was intensely debated in the Senate, between Robert Y. Hayne and Daniel Webster.
Hayne, senator from South Carolina, defended states' rights. He argued that nullification gave states
a way to lawfully

The Legacy Of Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767 to Scots–Irish colonists Andrew and Elizabeth
Hutchinson Jackson in the mountains between North and South Carolina. Jackson was born into
poverty and as a result received very little education growing up. When The British invaded the
Carolinas around 1780, Jackson's mother and two brothers were killed during the conflict and
British soldiers took the young Andrew Jackson prisoner, leaving him with a lifelong hostility
toward Great Britain. In 1781, Jackson worked for a time in a saddle–maker 's shop. Later, he taught
school and studied law in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1787, he was admitted to the bar, and moved
to Jonesborough. Jackson began working as a prosecuting attorney and later set up his own private
practice. Shortly after he met and married Rachel Robards, the daughter of a local colonel.
Andrew Jackson quickly became a wealthy Tennessee lawyer and rising young politician. In 1796,
Jackson joined a committee tasked with drafting the new Tennessee state constitution and soon after
he became the first man from Tennessee to be elected into the U.S. House of Representatives.
Although after his term was over in March 1797 he returned home without seeking reelection, he
was almost immediately elected into the U.S. Senate. Only a year later Jackson resigned from the
senate and was elected as a judge of Tennessee's superior court. Soon after he was chosen to head
the state militia, a position he held when war broke out between

The Rise Of Mass Democracy
Chapter 13
The Rise of Mass Democracy
I. The "Corrupt Bargain" of 1824
i. After the Era of Good Feelings, politics was transformed. The big winner of this transformation
was the common man. Specifically, the common white man as universal white manhood suffrage
(all white men could vote) became the norm. ii. In the election of 1824, there were four towering
candidates: Andrew Jackson of Tennessee, Henry
Clay of Kentucky, William H. Crawford of Georgia, and John Q. Adams of Massachusetts.
1. All four called themselves Republicans.
2. Three were a "favorite son" of their respective region but Clay thought of himself as a national
figure (he was Speaker of the House and author of the "American System"). iii. In the results,
Jackson got the most popular votes and the most electoral votes, but he failed to get the majority in
the Electoral College. Adams came in second in both, while Crawford was fourth in the popular vote
but third in the electoral votes. Clay was 4th in the electoral vote. iv. By the 12th Amendment, the
top three electoral vote getters would be voted upon in the House of
Reps. and the majority (over 50%) would be elected president.
v. Clay was eliminated, but he was the Speaker of the House, and since Crawford had recently
suffered a paralytic stroke and Clay hated Jackson, he threw his support behind John Q. Adams,
helping him become president.
1. When Clay was appointed Secretary of the State, the traditional stepping–stone to the presidency,

Tyranny of Andrew Jackson
The Tyranny of Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson: the common man or the first king of America? He is viewed by history in many
different ways, some see him as the man who granted universal white male suffrage, created a more
democratic way to elect electoral voters to congress and replaced caucuses with national nominating
conventions; and others, who saw past this false representation and saw how in his eight years in
office, he vetoed 12 bills, forced Native Americans from their homeland, ignored supreme court
decisions and let his personal life affect his presidential decisions. Jackson, as captured in his
portrait in the National Portrait gallery was a stern man with a strong sense of self–reliance. And
while these qualities can be seen as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, when introduced the Maysville Road Bill, he was quick to shoot it down. Behind the Bill
was Henry Clay, a politician from Kentucky. In previous years, Clay had earned credit from
Jackson's faults and publicly said that Jackson's part in the Trail of Tears "stained the national
honor." The Maysville Road Bill was a plan to build a twenty mile stretch of highway within Clay's
home state of Kentucky. Jackson vetoed it after it had been passed by congress, declaring that the
bill violated the economic affairs of the government and would put America is greater financial
crisis. In reality, it was a personal attack against Henry Clay (Van Deusen 52–54).
Despite Jackson's support for the growth and prosper of the West, both he and his constituents
lobbied to raise tariffs on imported textiles such as fur, flax, hemp, liquor and wool to about 50
percent their intended value. The increase of prices from other countries was greatly beneficial to
the Northern economy, who were able to sell more of their products, but detrimental to the South.
Because the South simply produced raw goods, it was essential that they imported manufactured
goods for their general well being. This tariff not only threatened to reduce the flow of goods from
Britain, but the loss of money made it difficult for them to purchase raw materials. Representative of
South Carolina and long time foe of Jackson, John C Calhoun spoke

Why Was Andrew Jackson Controversial
Should we assume that a president was a tyrant or a champion of the common man based solely on
how they acted or should we step into their shoes first before we judge them? Andrew Jackson's
presidency made him one of the most controversial presidents that has ever existed in the history of
the United States of America. Andrew Jackson for many was a cruel tyrant who reinstated the tax on
British goods with Tariff of 1828 and rejected the renewal of the charter for the Second National
Bank of the United States. Also, Andrew Jackson created the Indian Removal Act of 1830 which end
result would be the Trail of Tears during the presidency of Martin Van Buren. Andrew Jackson was
misguided with some of the actions he made during his presidency, but ... Show more content on

Andrew Jackson rejected the renewal of the bank charter because Andrew Jackson believed that the
bank was corrupt and was harmful to the common people as shown when he stated in his bank veto
message that, "the present Bank of the United States... enjoys an exclusive privilege of banking...
almost a monopoly of the foreign and domestic exchange." Andrew Jackson is showcasing his
disgust for the Second National Bank as he is implying that the bank is a corrupt system which only
help the rich and the bank itself while hurting the common folk. Andrew Jackson further showcases
this mentality by writing that, " it is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts
of government to their selfish purposes." Andrew Jackson is saying to Congress that he views the
Second National Bank of the U.S. as corrupt. Furthermore, Andrew Jackson believed he was
protecting the common people from a corrupt enterprise by rejecting the charter of the Second
National Bank of the U.S. as he believed that multiple state banks would be much more helpful to
the common people. Andrew Jackson is also suggesting that his idea for the pet banks, however
misguided it may have been, was for the good of the common

North And South Essay
North and South As the north and south began to separate after the Era of Good Feelings (1815–
1825), the Second American Party System was established. This system consisted of two distinct
parties, the Democrats and their opponents, who were known as Whigs for the most part. The goal
of these two parties was to create a common thought process between the north and the south. Three
of the issues prominent in their campaigns to gather votes in these two regions were government,
economy, and slavery. Using these topics as foundations, the members of both parties of the Second
American Party System aimed establish harmony between the north and south. Slavery played a
major role in American society during the early 1820s. The argument ... Show more content on

But when a group of radical evangelicals called for immediate abolition of slavery, they made the
national government face the issue of slavery, an issue it had been trying very hard to side step. In
response, the Democrats prevented any abolitionist mail from reaching the South. Sometimes, they
would not even respond to anti–slavery petitions that were sent to them. At this moment, former
President Adams (an opponent to President Andrew Jackson) chose to openly oppose slavery. But
already, most southerners saw what the Democrats wanted them to see: that their surest guarantee of
safety within the Union was a disciplined Democratic Party that avoided sectional arguments. The
Democrats said that a party that united northern and southern rights into a states'–rights, limited–
government majority could guarantee states' rights within the Union. This statement answered the
questions that arose during the Missouri debates: how do you protect the slave–holding South within
the federal Union. Martin Van Buren believed the alternative to this agenda, the isolation of the
slaveholding south, would lead to moral danger of the republic. Though said to be racists the
Democrats handled the slave situation in a way that made the south understand their plan. Views on
economy were a big difference between the Jacksonian Democrats and their opponents in relation to
the north and south. President Jackson hated the bank and believed it was

was known for being the inventor of the beverage Coca–Cola and he grew up in Atlanta, Georgia.
He spent most of his youthful years in Rome, Georgia after being born in Knoxville, Georgia in

Pemberton Company, which gave him a huge salary, did not run so smoothly. The reason why
Pemberton's business did not run very well was due to the period of prohibition during the year
1885. Since Atlanta prohibited the use of alcohol in 1885, Pemberton had to swap the French Wine
Coca formula by removing the word French Wine (Biography John S. Pemberton – Inventor of Coca
Cola). Cocaine, being the originally formula used for Coca–Cola, is no longer the main content for
Coca–Cola. Cocaine was then replaced with sugar, caffeine, starch, citric acid, and oil fruits. "For
the main ingredient, Pemberton had to find and collect seeds cola plant native to tropical regions of
West Africa and the tree coca leaves from South Africa" (Biography John S. Pemberton – Inventor
of Coca Cola). Pemberton dried both the cola nut and coca leaves manually. Pemberton made his
business successful and the potion he had created was revealed as he had hoped (Biography John S.
Pemberton – Inventor of Coca Cola). Then Pemberton's colleague Robinson came up with a name
for the potion and he suggested the name "Coca Cola". Pemberton approved the name "Coca Cola".

What Really Caused The Nullification Crisis Of The South...
During the late 1820s, John C. Calhoun believed that the tariff of 1816 was responsible for the
decline of the South Carolina economy. Calhoun believed that if he developed the Theory of
Nullification people in his home state would view him differently. The Theory of Nullification is the
idea that states (unions) have the rights to void any law that is created by the government that is seen
unconstitutional. States are the foundation of the Union, so they have the power to refuse any
unconstitutional laws, and really states usually have the final say. What really caused the
Nullification Crisis were many series of Protective Tariffs. Protective Tariffs are taxes placed on
imported goods that are from foreign countries and their duty is to raise the price of foreign goods,
making them less attractive to consumers protecting them from foreign competition such as; The
Tariff of 1816 that placed a 20–25 percent tax on foreign goods, The Tariff of 1824 which placed a
35 percent duty on imported iron, wool, hemp, and cotton, finally the Tariff of 1828 which is also
known as the Tariff of Abominations it was the third protective tariff and increased taxes to almost
50 percent. European factories during 1816 were far more experienced and with that great capability
American factories couldn't compare because their factories were new, and with that major
difference in prices America couldn't compare to the Europeans. The government then decided that
they should make the first

The Issue Of The Civil War
One exception to the rising trend in democracy was Rhode Island. Its policy was that voters had to
own land worth at least $134 or rent for $7 per year. Due to a growing population of wage earners
who did not own property, proponents of democracy organized a People's Convention and drafted a
new constitution. It gave all adult white men the right to vote. When reformers proceeded to ratify
their new constitution and inaugurate Thomas Dorr, Rhode Island's president, John Tyler, called on
federal troops. The movement was unsuccessful and Thomas Dorr ended up spending nearly two
years in prison for committing treason. The Dorr War made it clear how serious it was to exclude
any group of white men from voting. This eventually led to the ... Show more content on

children of those already in Missouri be freed at age twenty–five." (Foner 368) This proposal ignited

Why I Want For A Pharmacist
"Just because you graduated from a university doesn 't mean your days of studying are over" says a
woman named Rosemary Killeen. Throughout my life I have been divulged with many different
questions on what I want to be when I get older. I always had vacillated between "I am not really
sure yet" and "I want to be a professional athlete". But now that I have sat down to think about it I
realized that I would like to be a pharmacist. A pharmacist is a person who is professionally
qualified to prepare and dispense medical drugs. I think that being a pharmacist would be good for
me because I would like to be in the health field but working as a surgeon is not my type of thing.
As you read on you soon will find out the history of a pharmacist, what you need to obtain being a
pharmacist, a description of being a pharmacist, and why this job is for me. Pharmacy can be traced
far back into history. According to Pharmacy, the first known production of medicine substance was
around 6th century BC, however the earliest text of pharmacy can be dated back to the 3rd or 4th
AD. Ancient Egyptian's knowledge on pharmacy was originally written on papyrus. The earliest
known complete filling of medicine was done by the Hindu. One famous pharmacist named John
Pemberton was actually the man that invented Coca–Cola. I really think it is bizarre that a
pharmacist to be the person that would invent a kind of pop let alone Coca–Cola. Coca–Cola is one

known for his support of slavery, and state sovereignty.
Throughout the 1800s, the United States was divided between those who wished to stop the spread
of slavery mainly in the Northern states, and those who demanded to preserve slavery namely the
Southern states. One may ponder how a member of society could be a proponent of slavery;
however, Calhoun was raised in the South where a person's value was often measured by the amount

Did the Election of 1828 Represent a Democratic Revolt of the People? Despite the outcome I fully
believe that the election of 1828 did in fact, create a democratic revolt of the people because of the
social and political backlash that the election created. The election of Andrew Jackson as President
in 1828 marked the beginning of an era known as Jacksonian Democracy or the Age of the Common
Man. The changes in politics during Jackson's presidency provided various social and economic
changes. Actually, political change began several years before Jackson became president. In the
Election of 1824, Jackson had the most popular and electoral votes, but did not win the election.

Also, voters and politicians now nominated candidates, rather than the political party leaders in
Congress. This and other events led to a more democratic society. Jackson also gave government
jobs to regular people. This was called the spoils system. He appointed people to federal jobs
depending on whether they had campaigned for the Democratic Party. Anyone currently in office
who was not a democratic was replaced with a democrat. This was called the spoils system because
it promoted a corrupt government. He also believed in rotation in office. He wanted to make it
possible for more democrats to have government jobs, so he limited a person's time in office to one
term. The spoils system showed how one man was no better than another and helped build a strong
two–party system.
In the two–party system, supporters of Jackson were Democrats and supporters of his rival, Henry
Clay, were the Whigs. The Democratic Party resembled the old Republican party of Jefferson, while
the Whigs represented the Federalist party of Hamilton. Jackson was similar to Jefferson because he
opposed increasing federal spending and the national bank. He vetoed 12 bills, which was more than
the total of all 6 presidents before him. One of the things he vetoed was the use of federal money to

The Pros And Cons Of Jackson's Presidency
The differing interests between the North, South, and the West began to become clearer over time.
However, I believe that many of these crucial issues were addressed head on during Jackson's
presidency, but that was only the beginning. Compromises were made to prevent the splitting of the
Union, consequently, these topics, the Indian Removal Act of 1830, South Carolina are Nullification
Crisis, the Bank War, and slavery were the most controversial. Thus, once these contrary world
views had dominated the sectional compromises were no longer possible.
As soon as Jackson entered office, his first major policy was to address the issue of the Native
Americans. This came as no surprise since he had always been in favor of removing the Native
Americans, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Senator Henry Clay sided with Nicholas Biddle, the president of the Bank, and encouraged
him to renew his charter four years earlier. Since Clay was also running for president that year he
believed that Jackson had chosen the "unpopular side" and that a "congressional endorsement of the
Bank would embarrass or even discredit the president" (Brands 260). Jackson portrayed Biddle as an
enemy of the people and made it his personal mission to destroy the Bank personifying it as a
"monster corporation". In the North they favored the Bank because they had strong banking
institutions due to industrial economy. Meanwhile, the South did not have much need for the Bank
because they were mainly an agricultural economy which meant large amounts of cash were
uncommon. In the West, the land was mostly new territory with economies not as developed;
therefore they wanted paper money because getting a loan was easier. However altogether, Jackson's
first move was to veto the Bank bill; he viewed this as his mandate for reelection. In the end, Old
Hickory's popularity won the election and he bulldozed right through Henry Clay locking onto his

The Era Of The Common Man
The era of the common man was a period between, 1824 through 1848, described to be the era of
wealth, hope and power. During this period Andrew Jackson 's presidency helped United States
grow as a nation and live up to the era's name; through the economic developments, changing
politics that benefited the common man, and different reform movements. The Tariff of 1828
commonly known as the "tariff of abominations" decreased the Southerners economy drastically.
The Southerners had to pay for raw materials allowing the Northeast to prosper, by eliminating them
from foreign competition. Jackson and his Democratic – Republican Party were able to use this to
their advantage by luring colonist against the economic aristocracy that was growing in the
Northeastern states. As "president of the common man", Andrew Jackson believed economic
aristocracy was blocking opportunities to the common man. Jackson also believed that his biggest
enemy was the National Bank, managed by Nicholas Biddle. The National Bank had a wide range of
power and Biddle planned to use this power on less well managed banks. Jackson in order to stop
this "monster" pulled out all of the government 's deposits going into the bank, he also refused to
renew the bank 's charter before 1836, causing a short depression. At the beginning of 1835 a
nationwide economic boom was taking place. Canal, railroad building, and an abundance of land
contributed to this economic increase, as a result of this the government was

Two Party System in U.S. Essay example
The reemergence of the two party system in America during the early to mid–1800s was due greatly
to the battles for states' rights and the economic issues of the time. These two topics were closely
associated with each other and they helped contributed to the political struggle between the
Democrats and the Whigs. The political divisions had occurred one part due to Jackson's veto of the
re–chartering of the Bank of the United States, the Tariff of Abominations, and the disastrous effects
the Panic of 1837 had on the economy. Jackson's veto of the Maysville Road Bill and South
Carolina's nullification of the Tariff of Abominations had an enormous effect on the separations of
political support as they pertained to states' rights. These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Many harsh criticisms were formed about his plan and as a result, the conflict between the Whigs
and Democrats stiffened and increased the dissection between the two. These economic changes
helped to create political divisions, which ultimately led to a distinct two party system. Many
politicians also made attempts to either increase states rights or to increase those of the federal
government. The debate over states rights led to a further division in political ideologies and
consequently strengthened the two–party system. One such debate was over the Maysville Road
Bill. When Jackson vetoed the bill to appropriate federal funds to repair an interstate road, it marked
an enormous setback for nationalism and also the American System. His states' rights partiality
angered Henry Clay and other believers in the American system because the veto attacked one of the
major components of the system, a strong infrastructure including roads. Another issue dealing with
the rights of the state governments that divided the nation political was South Carolina's Ordinance
of Nullification. In reaction to the burden that the Tariff of Abominations placed upon the farmers of
South Carolina, the state utilized its right to nullify the federal law. In nullifying the tariff, South
Carolina took a bold step to declare its governmental rights. Jackson's hostile reaction to the South
Carolinians created a growing political division, strengthening the imminent separation

A Brief Note On Sectionalism And The American Civil War
Sectionalism, in it's earliest American state was found in the early 1800's. Tensions were high during
this time, with Slavery becoming a much more Sectional issue. The South claimed Slavery a
Necessary Evil, and that without it, the South's economy would collapse. Many in the South
believed it was a positive thing, providing slaves with shelter, food, and many cases, religion. On the
opposite side, many northerners called for Abolition, or, the end of slavery ("Course Notes,
Sectionalism and Slavery"). This ongoing conflict caused further splitting of the Union, with each
side's ideals being complete 180° of each others'. This political split lay almost exactly on the
nation's regional line splitting the north and south, beginning to cut the once united nation into said
"sections." This small crack would be a tiny spark that light the tinder of one of the bloodiest wars
the United States had ever participated in, the American Civil War. Where brother killed brother, and
children as young as middle schoolers would be admitted into the army to fight in some of the
bloodiest, brutal battles in american history ("Course Notes, Sectionalism and Slavery"). .Obviously,
sectioning and splitting a once strongly united country will have a huge impact upon said country.
The strong controversy of Slavery, along with several smaller conflicts at the time were wedging the
crack further apart, allowing the plague of sectionalism to expand and spread. One of these conflicts

Perhaps the three most influential men in the pre–Civil War era were Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun,
and Daniel Webster. These men all died nearly a decade before the civil war began, but they didn't
know how much they would effect it. States' rights was a very controversial issue, and one which
had strong opposition and radical proposals coming from both sides. John C. Calhoun was in favor
of giving states the power to nullify laws that they saw unconstitutional, and he presented this theory
in his "Doctrine of Nullification". Daniel Webster strongly disagreed with this proposal and showed
this by giving powerful support to President Jackson in resisting the attempt by South Carolina to
nullify the ‘tariff of abominations', as they called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Webster spoke on the senate floor, he left everyone in awe. He was a magnificent lawyer and
a convincing speaker. Daniel Webster was probably best remembered for his role in the short story
"The Devil and Daniel Webster". Henry Clay was, perhaps, the greatest compromiser of all time,
authoring such documents as the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, and the 1833
compromise bill that gradually lowered the tariff which the South had been so angry about. His view
on states' rights was that they should work with the federal government to come to come to a
compromise on the issue. Henry Clay was best remembered for his support of the Compromise of
1850. These three men were very different in a time of more partisanship and anger that today. I
believe that the nation was fortunate to have Henry Clay, for without him, the Civil War might have
come sooner. I also believe that if he hadn't died in 1852, but lived until 1865, the Civil War might
have been prevented; or at least, delayed. I admire Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun, not for
their ideas, but for the way that they fought for what they believed in. It is thanks to these Webster
and Calhoun, and men like them, that the Civil War was fought, and thanks to Clay, and men like
him, that the Civil war was

The South Is Seen As A Romanticize Version Of The United...
Mid–Term Exam #3 The South is seen as a romanticize version of the United States. A place where
virtue, honor, and strong religious morals were upheld in common society. However, the recurring
themes that the South would have the role of being the ongoing rebel against most national policies
that gave any sign of hindering their way of life, the concept of individualism, yet keeping its own
societal identity. From the Revolutionary War onwards, the South has been developed as the shining
example of what an American should be like. Slavery was a huge attribute of Southern society,
though looked down upon by the world, it was practiced and eagerly defended by political logic and
religious zeal. One argument is made from a Senator ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The South has been criticized for practicing the archaic ways of slavery deeming it: barbaric,
inhumane, and out of touch with the changes of the world. The argument continues through George
Fitzhugh's Southern Thought, "Labor pays all taxes, but labor in a slave society is property, and men
will take care of their property. In free society, labor is not property, and there is nothing to shield
the laborer from the grinding weight of taxation – all of which he pays, because he produces
everything valuable." (Fitzhugh Southern Thought pg. 823) Furthermore, the identity the South
identifies itself as a place of self–worth and pride in what your property can produce while enjoying
the fruits of their labors. A land where taxes cannot take away the riches and treasures that are
produced in their fruitful land. The South possessed identity, and with that identity came the sense of
individualism. One of the leading causes of the Civil War was the belief that the South's sense of
individualism was in danger and to be eradicated from the face of the United States. Ironically,
during the Civil War the draft was enacted into Southern conscriptions making it more of mandatory
duty to southerners to join the military. The first general American military draft was enacted by the
Confederate government on April 16, 1862, more than a year before the federal government did the

The Age Of Jackson By Andrew Jackson Essay
"The Age of Jackson" was a time when the high society aristocrats were threatened by the
commoner. Jackson was a common man himself; orphaned as a boy, Jackson, rose to the top and
became an admired general and commander in chief. Jackson affected the outlook on the class
system, the method of electing our president, the spread of the spoils system, the fighting between
the north and the south, the interactions between America and the Indians, and he helped lead our
country to inflation.
With Jackson's emaciated physical appearance, it is ironic that he had the personality of a fighter.
Andrew Jackson overall was a misfit in politics for a plethora of reasons that in turn had various
effects. Jackson frequently used his power to veto bills. He did this more than any other president
before him. This set the precedent for all future presidents to be more involved in the legislative
process. Not only did Jackson give the President a much needed voice in legislation, but he also
challenged the class system. Jackson became an orphan at a young age and took an interest in
cockfighting. Like his predecessor, Washington, he had no formal college education and was known
to have bad spelling habits. However, these disadvantages gave him a popularity increase with the
lower class common man. He was perceived to have a greater understanding of the common man,
being a common man himself. Jackson's involvement in the end of the War of 1812 was a major
success for him. At the Battle of

How Did John Pemberton Use Coca-Cola?
Whoever you are, whatever you do, wherever you may be, when you think of refreshment, think of
ice cold Coca –Cola! John Pemberton invented Coca –Cola in the late 1880's, and Coke is still one
of the best sellers of soda in the world!
John Pemberton lived from 1830– 1888. He studied at the Reform Medical College of Georgia in
his hometown of Rome, Georgia. He later moved to Atlanta. On May 8th, 1886, he perfected his
formula for Coca– Cola. Coke was never patented.
He invented Coca– Cola as a carbonated soda beverage. John derived his formula for Coca–Cola
from his very popular drink–– French Wine Coca. He omitted wine, but left in the cocaine, and

It did, because he was actually addicting them to cocaine instead.)
He told them that his new invention, Coca– Cola, was almost the exact same thing as French Wine
Coca, but that he took out the wine, the main ingredient, and replaced it with sugars and citric acids
and essential oils from many fruits. Many people loved this new Coca– Cola and he was almost sold

Coca– Cola because of the Temperance. Since French Wine Coca had wine in it, it was made illegal.
He needed something to sell to his costumers. John never got to see that his new soda product was a

Andrew Jackson Was A Leader
Introduction Andrew Jackson was a leader. He was a leader on the battlefront, a leader in office and
a leader in his beliefs. Jackson had certain fundamental beliefs that shaped him as a person and
would be the foundation for which he would rule the country. He stood by those beliefs and fought
for what he saw as the right way. During his life, Jackson would fight many battles and tackle many
fundamental opponents. Here, the topic brings into focus one area of importance to Jackson, the
national bank, and individual states rights, as well as some the opponents he faced during only a few
of the many issues he would take on during his lifetime. A few years into his term, Jackson set out to

Biddle then stated that the Bank would spear head one of Jackson's personal causes by intending to

friends and backers, proving to Jacksons that his initial thoughts were correct in thinking that the
Bank could play to the political policies and involve themselves in political processes. (Warshauer)
Biddle took Jackson by surprise when he asked for a re–charter four years before their current
charter expired, which also happened to be an election year. Biddle played on the belief that he
could force Jackson's hand out of fear from causing an election issue in the upcoming voting. Biddle
was incorrect. (Warshauer) The re–charter bill went on the Senate floor in March and was graciously
met with much support. Jackson issued a veto that would try not to anger the public and in return,
not cost the Democrats support in the fall election. Jackson's veto played off of the stockholding
policies of foreign citizens and the questions the Bank 's monopoly, which brought up questions
about the Constitutional laws that it might infringe upon. Jackson argued that its favoritism went

Andrew Jackson's Characterization Of The Age Of Jackson
Andrew Jackson first had a military career that evolved into a political career in the Age of Jackson.
The Age of Jackson is an accurate characterization of the era between 1815 and 1845, because
Jackson dominated the political sphere in the US. He was the dominant political figure that was
almost as influential and as representative as Martin Van Buren. Van Buren was the only politician
that could challenge Andrew Jackson in politics, because Jackson's characterization embodied the
views held in the first 40 years of the early 1800s.
Does that seem an apt characterization?
Jackson maintained his image as a dominant figure as president from 1828 to 1837 when he fought
for southerners as he garnered the attention of Whigs to preserve the Union. Jackson is regarded as a
national hero that excelled in military and politics. Examples of this accurate characterization are his
title as the "Indian Fighter" and his actions as President of the United States. In The Battle of New
Orleans and Seminole Wars. His actions, while extremely xenophobic and racist, were revered by
the general public, but he is still seen as a national historical figure. He had a decisive victory over
the British in the Battle of New Orleans when he prevented the British from taking the Louisiana
Purchase despite being outnumbered by around 10,000 troops. He was an astute militarily strategist
that anticipated and fended off British at the Siege of Fort St. Philip in a critical point of the Battle

How Water Transportation Would Be Further Revolutionized...
Water transportation would be further revolutionized by the construction of canals. In 1825, New

states like Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio also invested large amounts of money to build a
network of canals connecting the Mississippi to the Great Lakes. As a result s, water transportation
was much faster and cheaper. By 1827, wheat from central New York State could be bought for less
money in Savannah, Georgia, than wheat grown in Georgia. This apparently had a great influence

The South, like other slave–based societies, did not construct urban centers for commerce, finance,
and industry on a scale rival with those found in the North. Southern cities, instead, were small as
they failed to develop diversified economies and rarely engaged in international trade. On the
contrary, southern cities primarily engaged in local trade. They marketed and transported cotton or
other agricultural crops, supplied local planters and farmers with such necessities as agricultural
tools, and produced manufactured goods, such as cotton gins, sold mostly to farmers. Southerners
neglect industry and transportation improvements, like the railroads and canals of New York and
Pennsylvania, due to the over–reliance on slave–based system. As a result, manufacturing and
transportation lagged far behind in comparison to the North . Despite falling further and further
behind in respect to economic growth, the south still managed to establish an aggressive sense of
nationalism that was entrenched in its belief of its distinguished character and its illusion about
oppressing by "enemies"(i.e. the North and blacks). The South began to consider itself more and

The Tariff Of Foreign Goods
A tariff is a tax on foreign goods. The price of foreign goods increases with the tax, and provides
revenue for the government, which makes American products more appealing. This is because the
foreign goods that were cheaper are now more expensive. However, why was there a need for tariffs
in the early 19th century (1800)? The reason is because, American industries were young, Britain
flooded the US market with cheap goods after the War of 1812, and foreign goods have been often
cheaper. In order to make sure American businesses could prosper, there had to be tariffs on the
foreign goods. The tariff of 1816 was the first substantial protective tariff of the American System;
supported by Henry Clay, but opposed by John C. Calhoun and Southern cotton growers. The tariff
of 1824 increased the rate of the protective tariff and opposition in the South grew. In the Tariff of
1828 (Tariff of Abominations), there were higher protective tariffs to New England Mills; and
Southerners were outraged including Calhoun.
On July 11, 1804, a bullet from Aaron Burr's pistol put an end to the life of Alexander Hamilton.
However, it did not put an end to Hamilton's vision for America. In 1806, a twenty–nine year old
Kentuckian entered the U.S Senate and breathed life into Hamilton's vision. His name was Henry
Clay. For the next forty years, the man whom Abraham Lincoln called "My beau–ideal of a

Protective Tariffs are taxes placed on
imported goods that are from foreign countries and their duty is to raise the price of foreign goods,
making them less attractive to consumers protecting them from foreign competition such as; The
Tariff of 1816 that placed a 20–25 percent tax on foreign goods, The Tariff of 1824 which placed a
35 percent duty tax on imported iron, wool, hemp, and cotton, finally the Tariff of 1828 which is
also known as the Tariff of Abominations it was the third protective tariff and increased taxes to
almost 50 percent. European factories during 1816 were far more experienced and with that great
capability American factories couldn't compare because their factories were new, and with that
major difference in prices America couldn't compare to the Europeans. The government then

audiences to return each week. For the SNL cast, they said Will was the glue that holds the show
together. After Saturday Night Live was over Ferrell actually had a very successful career in
hollywood unlike others alongside him. In 2003 Ferrell found great success playing buddy in the
movie Elf, along with anchorman (2004), Talladega Nights (2006) Blades of Glory (2007). Ferrell
proved that he wasn't scared to try new things by launching the film funny or die. Ferrell slid
seamlessly into the role of voice actor for the animated Megamind, starring as the titular villain
turned superhero. While generally regarded as quiet and unassuming off set, the intensely private

Chewing Gum

  • 1. Chewing Gum Although chewing gum isn't an amazing invention I like chewing gum and I wondered who made this wonderful invention. The first chewing gum was called resin made from the sap of spruce trees. The New Englanders settled and found this chewing gum and want to make it more. In 1848, John Curtis made and sold the first chewing gum. They called it the State of Maple Pure Spruce Gum. Even though John Curtis invented it in 1848, scientists think North Europeans were chewing birch wood tar around 9,000 years ago! Even the Ancient Maya shewed a substance called chicle. Curtis built the first chewing gum factory in the 1850s. the factory stood in Portland, Maine. As it turns out resin was not very good to chew on because it became brittle after it was ... • 5. Biography of President Andrew Jackson I agree that with the rating of sixth overall that Andrew Jackson received for his presidency. Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States and a member of the Democratic Party. Jackson made many positive and negative decisions as the president of the United States. Andrew Jackson expanded the power of the president and he also expanded democracy during his time as the president of the United States. Andrew Jackson has gone down as one of the best presidents in United States history and that's because he did many great things to improve the United States. Throughout his presidency he constantly abused his power as the president and did many things that expanded the powers of the president. One of the biggest things that President Jackson did while in office was pass the Indian Removal Act. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was when Jackson forced all the Indians to move to the land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase, while the Supreme Court declared this unconstitutional. Many of the Indians went peacefully, but many of the Indians also decided to protest and take it to the Supreme Court (Darrenkamp). While the court did side with the Indians Jackson and Congress forced the Indians to give up their land. The federal troops were called in to escort the Indians to their new land. Fifteen thousand Indians were forced to move and while on their way about a third of the Indians died, and this event became to be known as the Trail of Tears (Darrenkamp). Jackson had ... • 9. Andrew Jackson 's Views On The Election Of 1824 Andrew Jackson's path to presidency was unique. In the election of 1824, there were four main candidates, John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, William H. Crawford, and Andrew Jackson. Jackson gained the most popular votes of the four Democratic–Republican candidates, but not the majority of electoral votes to win the election. Henry Clay, who was eliminated from the election, held a decisive position as the speaker of the House of Representatives. Clay was in a position to throw the election to the candidate of his choice. Clay threw his support behind Adams since he had led some of the strongest attacks against Jackson. Rather than the nation's presidency go to a man he abhorred, Clay secured the White House for Adams. In return Adams named ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Northerners supported tariffs because tariffs helped them compete with British factories. The South's economy was based on farming. Southerners imported their manufactured goods. Tariffs made imported goods more expensive for southern farmer which led to their opposition. Angry Southerners called the tariff the Tariff of Abominations. The new tariff added fuel to the growing sectional differences plaguing the young nation. When Andrew Jackson took office in 1829, he was forced to respond to the growing conflict over tariffs. Vice President John C. Calhoun joined his fellow southerners in protest when Congress passed the Tariff of Abominations. In response to the tariff, Calhoun drafted the South Carolina Exposition and Protest. It urged states to nullify the Tariff of Abominations and used it to argue that since the states created the national government they decided when the national laws apply. Calhoun's theory was controversial, and it drew some fierce challengers. Many of them were from the northern states that had benefited from increased tariffs. These opponents believed that the American people, not the individual states, made up the Union. Conflict between the supporters and the opponents of nullification deepened. The issue of nullification was intensely debated in the Senate, between Robert Y. Hayne and Daniel Webster. Hayne, senator from South Carolina, defended states' rights. • 13. The Legacy Of Andrew Jackson Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767 to Scots–Irish colonists Andrew and Elizabeth Hutchinson Jackson in the mountains between North and South Carolina. Jackson was born into poverty and as a result received very little education growing up. When The British invaded the Carolinas around 1780, Jackson's mother and two brothers were killed during the conflict and British soldiers took the young Andrew Jackson prisoner, leaving him with a lifelong hostility toward Great Britain. In 1781, Jackson worked for a time in a saddle–maker 's shop. Later, he taught school and studied law in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1787, he was admitted to the bar, and moved to Jonesborough. Jackson began working as a prosecuting attorney and later set up his own private practice. Shortly after he met and married Rachel Robards, the daughter of a local colonel. Andrew Jackson quickly became a wealthy Tennessee lawyer and rising young politician. In 1796, Jackson joined a committee tasked with drafting the new Tennessee state constitution and soon after he became the first man from Tennessee to be elected into the U.S. House of Representatives. Although after his term was over in March 1797 he returned home without seeking reelection, he was almost immediately elected into the U.S. Senate. Only a year later Jackson resigned from the senate and was elected as a judge of Tennessee's superior court. • 17. The Rise Of Mass Democracy Chapter 13 The Rise of Mass Democracy I. The "Corrupt Bargain" of 1824 i. After the Era of Good Feelings, politics was transformed. The big winner of this transformation was the common man. Specifically, the common white man as universal white manhood suffrage (all white men could vote) became the norm. ii. In the election of 1824, there were four towering candidates: Andrew Jackson of Tennessee, Henry Clay of Kentucky, William H. Crawford of Georgia, and John Q. Adams of Massachusetts. 1. All four called themselves Republicans. 2. Three were a "favorite son" of their respective region but Clay thought of himself as a national figure (he was Speaker of the House and author of the "American System"). iii. In the results, Jackson got the most popular votes and the most electoral votes, but he failed to get the majority in the Electoral College. Adams came in second in both, while Crawford was fourth in the popular vote but third in the electoral votes. Clay was 4th in the electoral vote. iv. By the 12th Amendment, the top three electoral vote getters would be voted upon in the House of Reps. and the majority (over 50%) would be elected president. v. Clay was eliminated, but he was the Speaker of the House, and since Crawford had recently suffered a paralytic stroke and Clay hated Jackson, he threw his support behind John Q. Adams, helping him become president. 1. When Clay was appointed Secretary of the State, the traditional stepping–stone to the presidency, Jacksonians cried ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Tyranny of Andrew Jackson The Tyranny of Andrew Jackson Andrew Jackson: the common man or the first king of America? He is viewed by history in many different ways, some see him as the man who granted universal white male suffrage, created a more democratic way to elect electoral voters to congress and replaced caucuses with national nominating conventions; and others, who saw past this false representation and saw how in his eight years in office, he vetoed 12 bills, forced Native Americans from their homeland, ignored supreme court decisions and let his personal life affect his presidential decisions. Jackson, as captured in his portrait in the National Portrait gallery was a stern man with a strong sense of self–reliance. And while these qualities can be seen as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, when introduced the Maysville Road Bill, he was quick to shoot it down. Behind the Bill was Henry Clay, a politician from Kentucky. In previous years, Clay had earned credit from Jackson's faults and publicly said that Jackson's part in the Trail of Tears "stained the national honor." The Maysville Road Bill was a plan to build a twenty mile stretch of highway within Clay's home state of Kentucky. Jackson vetoed it after it had been passed by congress, declaring that the bill violated the economic affairs of the government and would put America is greater financial crisis. In reality, it was a personal attack against Henry Clay (Van Deusen 52–54). Despite Jackson's support for the growth and prosper of the West, both he and his constituents lobbied to raise tariffs on imported textiles such as fur, flax, hemp, liquor and wool to about 50 percent their intended value. The increase of prices from other countries was greatly beneficial to the Northern economy, who were able to sell more of their products, but detrimental to the South. Because the South simply produced raw goods, it was essential that they imported manufactured goods for their general well being. This tariff not only threatened to reduce the flow of goods from Britain, but the loss of money made it difficult for them to purchase raw materials. • 25. Why Was Andrew Jackson Controversial Should we assume that a president was a tyrant or a champion of the common man based solely on how they acted or should we step into their shoes first before we judge them? Andrew Jackson's presidency made him one of the most controversial presidents that has ever existed in the history of the United States of America. Andrew Jackson for many was a cruel tyrant who reinstated the tax on British goods with Tariff of 1828 and rejected the renewal of the charter for the Second National Bank of the United States. Also, Andrew Jackson created the Indian Removal Act of 1830 which end result would be the Trail of Tears during the presidency of Martin Van Buren. Andrew Jackson was misguided with some of the actions he made during his presidency, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Andrew Jackson rejected the renewal of the bank charter because Andrew Jackson believed that the bank was corrupt and was harmful to the common people as shown when he stated in his bank veto message that, "the present Bank of the United States... enjoys an exclusive privilege of banking... almost a monopoly of the foreign and domestic exchange." Andrew Jackson is showcasing his disgust for the Second National Bank as he is implying that the bank is a corrupt system which only help the rich and the bank itself while hurting the common folk. Andrew Jackson further showcases this mentality by writing that, " it is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes." Andrew Jackson is saying to Congress that he views the Second National Bank of the U.S. as corrupt. Furthermore, Andrew Jackson believed he was protecting the common people from a corrupt enterprise by rejecting the charter of the Second National Bank of the U.S. as he believed that multiple state banks would be much more helpful to the common people. • 33. North And South Essay North and South As the north and south began to separate after the Era of Good Feelings (1815– 1825), the Second American Party System was established. This system consisted of two distinct parties, the Democrats and their opponents, who were known as Whigs for the most part. The goal of these two parties was to create a common thought process between the north and the south. Three of the issues prominent in their campaigns to gather votes in these two regions were government, economy, and slavery. Using these topics as foundations, the members of both parties of the Second American Party System aimed establish harmony between the north and south. But when a group of radical evangelicals called for immediate abolition of slavery, they made the national government face the issue of slavery, an issue it had been trying very hard to side step. In response, the Democrats prevented any abolitionist mail from reaching the South. Sometimes, they would not even respond to anti–slavery petitions that were sent to them. At this moment, former President Adams (an opponent to President Andrew Jackson) chose to openly oppose slavery. But already, most southerners saw what the Democrats wanted them to see: that their surest guarantee of safety within the Union was a disciplined Democratic Party that avoided sectional arguments. The Democrats said that a party that united northern and southern rights into a states'–rights, limited– government majority could guarantee states' rights within the Union. This statement answered the questions that arose during the Missouri debates: how do you protect the slave–holding South within the federal Union. Martin Van Buren believed the alternative to this agenda, the isolation of the slaveholding south, would lead to moral danger of the republic. Though said to be racists the Democrats handled the slave situation in a way that made the south understand their plan. Views on economy were a big difference between the Jacksonian Democrats and their opponents in relation to the north and south. President Jackson hated the bank and believed it was ... The thesis is that the Jacksonian Presidency brought a change to the office. The reason why Pemberton's business did not run very well was due to the period of prohibition during the year 1885. Since Atlanta prohibited the use of alcohol in 1885, Pemberton had to swap the French Wine Coca formula by removing the word French Wine (Biography John S. Pemberton – Inventor of Coca Cola). Cocaine, being the originally formula used for Coca–Cola, is no longer the main content for Coca–Cola. Cocaine was then replaced with sugar, caffeine, starch, citric acid, and oil fruits. • 45. What Really Caused The Nullification Crisis Of The South... During the late 1820s, John C. Calhoun believed that the tariff of 1816 was responsible for the decline of the South Carolina economy. Calhoun believed that if he developed the Theory of Nullification people in his home state would view him differently. The Theory of Nullification is the idea that states (unions) have the rights to void any law that is created by the government that is seen unconstitutional. States are the foundation of the Union, so they have the power to refuse any unconstitutional laws, and really states usually have the final say. What really caused the Nullification Crisis were many series of Protective Tariffs. Protective Tariffs are taxes placed on imported goods that are from foreign countries and their duty is to raise the price of foreign goods, making them less attractive to consumers protecting them from foreign competition such as; The Tariff of 1816 that placed a 20–25 percent tax on foreign goods, The Tariff of 1824 which placed a 35 percent duty on imported iron, wool, hemp, and cotton, finally the Tariff of 1828 which is also known as the Tariff of Abominations it was the third protective tariff and increased taxes to almost 50 percent. European factories during 1816 were far more experienced and with that great capability American factories couldn't compare because their factories were new, and with that major difference in prices America couldn't compare to the Europeans. That was I breathing in my first breath. Ah, I can just smell the air of that spring day. I was born on March 18 1782 in Abbeville, South Carolina to Patrick and Martha Calhoun of Scotch–Irish descent. This hat here is an artifact from a confrontation between the Native Americans and my father and his family. My father lived but with four bullet holes to his hat but unfortunately my grandmother, two of my cousins, and my uncle did not make it. Due to a growing population of wage earners who did not own property, proponents of democracy organized a People's Convention and drafted a new constitution. It gave all adult white men the right to vote. When reformers proceeded to ratify their new constitution and inaugurate Thomas Dorr, Rhode Island's president, John Tyler, called on federal troops. The movement was unsuccessful and Thomas Dorr ended up spending nearly two years in prison for committing treason. I always had vacillated between "I am not really sure yet" and "I want to be a professional athlete". But now that I have sat down to think about it I realized that I would like to be a pharmacist. A pharmacist is a person who is professionally qualified to prepare and dispense medical drugs. As you read on you soon will find out the history of a pharmacist, what you need to obtain being a pharmacist, a description of being a pharmacist, and why this job is for me. Pharmacy can be traced far back into history. According to Pharmacy, the first known production of medicine substance was around 6th century BC, however the earliest text of pharmacy can be dated back to the 3rd or 4th AD. Ancient Egyptian's knowledge on pharmacy was originally written on papyrus. The earliest known complete filling of medicine was done by the Hindu. Despite the outcome I fully believe that the election of 1828 did in fact, create a democratic revolt of the people because of the social and political backlash that the election created. The election of Andrew Jackson as President in 1828 marked the beginning of an era known as Jacksonian Democracy or the Age of the Common Man. The changes in politics during Jackson's presidency provided various social and economic changes. Actually, political change began several years before Jackson became president. In the Election of 1824, Jackson had the most popular and electoral votes, but did not win the election. Because the vote was split four ways, he did not have the ... This and other events led to a more democratic society. Jackson also gave government jobs to regular people. This was called the spoils system. He appointed people to federal jobs depending on whether they had campaigned for the Democratic Party. Anyone currently in office who was not a democratic was replaced with a democrat. This was called the spoils system because it promoted a corrupt government. He also believed in rotation in office. He wanted to make it possible for more democrats to have government jobs, so he limited a person's time in office to one term. The spoils system showed how one man was no better than another and helped build a strong two–party system. In the two–party system, supporters of Jackson were Democrats and supporters of his rival, Henry Clay, were the Whigs. The Democratic Party resembled the old Republican party of Jefferson, while the Whigs represented the Federalist party of Hamilton. Jackson was similar to Jefferson because he opposed increasing federal spending and the national bank. He vetoed 12 bills, which was more than the total of all 6 presidents before him. However, I believe that many of these crucial issues were addressed head on during Jackson's presidency, but that was only the beginning. Since Clay was also running for president that year he believed that Jackson had chosen the "unpopular side" and that a "congressional endorsement of the Bank would embarrass or even discredit the president" (Brands 260). Jackson portrayed Biddle as an enemy of the people and made it his personal mission to destroy the Bank personifying it as a "monster corporation". In the North they favored the Bank because they had strong banking institutions due to industrial economy. Meanwhile, the South did not have much need for the Bank because they were mainly an agricultural economy which meant large amounts of cash were uncommon. In the West, the land was mostly new territory with economies not as developed; therefore they wanted paper money because getting a loan was easier. However altogether, Jackson's first move was to veto the Bank bill; he viewed this as his mandate for reelection. In the end, Old Hickory's popularity won the election and he bulldozed right through Henry Clay locking onto his next target, Biddle's bank. Even with four years left on the Bank's charter, Jackson could not wait four years for it to expire. Impatiently, Jackson ordered his secretary of the treasury to remove federal deposits from Biddle's Bank. During this period Andrew Jackson 's presidency helped United States grow as a nation and live up to the era's name; through the economic developments, changing politics that benefited the common man, and different reform movements. The Tariff of 1828 commonly known as the "tariff of abominations" decreased the Southerners economy drastically. The Southerners had to pay for raw materials allowing the Northeast to prosper, by eliminating them from foreign competition. Jackson and his Democratic – Republican Party were able to use this to their advantage by luring colonist against the economic aristocracy that was growing in the Northeastern states. As "president of the common man", Andrew Jackson believed economic aristocracy was blocking opportunities to the common man. Jackson also believed that his biggest enemy was the National Bank, managed by Nicholas Biddle. The National Bank had a wide range of power and Biddle planned to use this power on less well managed banks. Jackson in order to stop this "monster" pulled out all of the government 's deposits going into the bank, he also refused to renew the bank 's charter before 1836, causing a short depression. Two Party System in U.S. Essay example The reemergence of the two party system in America during the early to mid–1800s was due greatly to the battles for states' rights and the economic issues of the time. These two topics were closely associated with each other and they helped contributed to the political struggle between the Democrats and the Whigs. The political divisions had occurred one part due to Jackson's veto of the re–chartering of the Bank of the United States, the Tariff of Abominations, and the disastrous effects the Panic of 1837 had on the economy. Many harsh criticisms were formed about his plan and as a result, the conflict between the Whigs and Democrats stiffened and increased the dissection between the two. These economic changes helped to create political divisions, which ultimately led to a distinct two party system. Many politicians also made attempts to either increase states rights or to increase those of the federal government. The debate over states rights led to a further division in political ideologies and consequently strengthened the two–party system. One such debate was over the Maysville Road Bill. When Jackson vetoed the bill to appropriate federal funds to repair an interstate road, it marked an enormous setback for nationalism and also the American System. His states' rights partiality angered Henry Clay and other believers in the American system because the veto attacked one of the major components of the system, a strong infrastructure including roads. Another issue dealing with the rights of the state governments that divided the nation political was South Carolina's Ordinance of Nullification. In reaction to the burden that the Tariff of Abominations placed upon the farmers of South Carolina, the state utilized its right to nullify the federal law. Tensions were high during this time, with Slavery becoming a much more Sectional issue. The South claimed Slavery a Necessary Evil, and that without it, the South's economy would collapse. Many in the South believed it was a positive thing, providing slaves with shelter, food, and many cases, religion. On the opposite side, many northerners called for Abolition, or, the end of slavery ("Course Notes, Sectionalism and Slavery"). This ongoing conflict caused further splitting of the Union, with each side's ideals being complete 180° of each others'. This political split lay almost exactly on the nation's regional line splitting the north and south, beginning to cut the once united nation into said "sections." These men all died nearly a decade before the civil war began, but they didn't know how much they would effect it. The South has been criticized for practicing the archaic ways of slavery deeming it: barbaric, inhumane, and out of touch with the changes of the world. The argument continues through George Fitzhugh's Southern Thought, "Labor pays all taxes, but labor in a slave society is property, and men will take care of their property. In free society, labor is not property, and there is nothing to shield the laborer from the grinding weight of taxation – all of which he pays, because he produces everything valuable." A land where taxes cannot take away the riches and treasures that are produced in their fruitful land. The South possessed identity, and with that identity came the sense of individualism. One of the leading causes of the Civil War was the belief that the South's sense of individualism was in danger and to be eradicated from the face of the United States. Jackson was a common man himself; orphaned as a boy, Jackson, rose to the top and became an admired general and commander in chief. Jackson affected the outlook on the class system, the method of electing our president, the spread of the spoils system, the fighting between the north and the south, the interactions between America and the Indians, and he helped lead our country to inflation. With Jackson's emaciated physical appearance, it is ironic that he had the personality of a fighter. Andrew Jackson overall was a misfit in politics for a plethora of reasons that in turn had various effects. Jackson frequently used his power to veto bills. He did this more than any other president before him. This set the precedent for all future presidents to be more involved in the legislative process. Not only did Jackson give the President a much needed voice in legislation, but he also challenged the class system. Jackson became an orphan at a young age and took an interest in cockfighting. Like his predecessor, Washington, he had no formal college education and was known to have bad spelling habits. However, these disadvantages gave him a popularity increase with the lower class common man. He was perceived to have a greater understanding of the common man, being a common man himself. John Pemberton invented Coca –Cola in the late 1880's, and Coke is still one of the best sellers of soda in the world! John Pemberton lived from 1830– 1888. He studied at the Reform Medical College of Georgia in his hometown of Rome, Georgia. He later moved to Atlanta. On May 8th, 1886, he perfected his formula for Coca– Cola. Coke was never patented. Many people used French Wine Coca as a stimulant. (John Pemberton was selling his French wine coca as an elixir and told many people that it was able to get people off of their morphine addictions. It did, because he was actually addicting them to cocaine instead.) He told them that his new invention, Coca– Cola, was almost the exact same thing as French Wine Coca, but that he took out the wine, the main ingredient, and replaced it with sugars and citric acids and essential oils from many fruits. Many people loved this new Coca– Cola and he was almost sold out. He fell ill and died in 1887. He never got to see Coca– Cola bloom. John Pemberton created Coca– Cola because of the Temperance. Since French Wine Coca had wine in it, it was made illegal. He needed something to sell to his costumers. John never got to see that his new soda product was a bestseller. He sold all the rights to the company 1n 1887. In1903, the cocaine in Coca– Cola was removed from the product, but cocaine wasn't illegal until 1914. History 217: U.S. History to 1865 Dr. Fuller November 30, 2003 Cynthia Mihay The Petticoat Affair: Manners, Mutiny, and Sex in Andrew Jackson's White House. By John F. Marszalek. (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 1997. viii, 296 pp.) John F. Marszalek, author of The Petticoat Affair argues in his book that the Margaret Eaton affair, which plagued the first Jackson administration, was a social situation that had political ramifications. The thesis is that the Jacksonian Presidency brought a change to the office. Bringing much more democracy than most would have thought and at the same time a woman who did not fit the mold of the normal submissive political wife in Washington or in Tennessee came to the forefront ... She was the daughter of a Scot Irish boarding house owner she having never been admitted to society, as John Calhoun stated but when marriage to Mr. Eaton occurred she wanted entrance to Washington Society. Both her husband and herself wanted admittance to Washington society but were denied it as social rules had been bent or broken and the society's matrons had to protect their system from the change threatened by Mrs. Eaton. President Jackson's beloved Rachael was scandalized and when rumors were circulated about Margaret to keep her out of society and to publicly justify that exclusion Jackson supported Margaret with much passion. President Jackson saw conspiracy everywhere as he tried to help the innkeeper's daughter. The 3 most commonly known colas are Coca–Cola Classic, Diet Coke, and Coke Zero. The only difference between them is that they each have different artificial sweeteners. Just like tea and coffee, cola contains caffeine. Most people prefer cola instead of coffee and tea because it has fewer chemicals in it, which makes people feel safer. Chromogens stain your teeth. • 121. Andrew Jackson Was A Leader Introduction Andrew Jackson was a leader. He was a leader on the battlefront, a leader in office and a leader in his beliefs. Jackson had certain fundamental beliefs that shaped him as a person and would be the foundation for which he would rule the country. He stood by those beliefs and fought for what he saw as the right way. During his life, Jackson would fight many battles and tackle many fundamental opponents. Here, the topic brings into focus one area of importance to Jackson, the national bank, and individual states rights, as well as some the opponents he faced during only a few of the many issues he would take on during his lifetime. A few years into his term, Jackson set out to shut down the Second Bank of the United States. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Biddle then stated that the Bank would spear head one of Jackson's personal causes by intending to pay off the National debt, in Jackson's honor. The offer came with the condition that the Bank would be granted a charter extension. Biddle also began to offer loans and financial favors to Jackson's friends and backers, proving to Jacksons that his initial thoughts were correct in thinking that the Bank could play to the political policies and involve themselves in political processes. (Warshauer) Biddle took Jackson by surprise when he asked for a re–charter four years before their current charter expired, which also happened to be an election year. Biddle played on the belief that he could force Jackson's hand out of fear from causing an election issue in the upcoming voting. Biddle was incorrect. (Warshauer) The re–charter bill went on the Senate floor in March and was graciously met with much support. Jackson issued a veto that would try not to anger the public and in return, not cost the Democrats support in the fall election. Jackson's veto played off of the stockholding policies of foreign citizens and the questions the Bank 's monopoly, which brought up questions about the Constitutional laws that it might infringe upon. Jackson argued that its favoritism went against the role of a government that should stand for honesty, equality, and fairness. Congress tried ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 125. Andrew Jackson's Characterization Of The Age Of Jackson Andrew Jackson first had a military career that evolved into a political career in the Age of Jackson. The Age of Jackson is an accurate characterization of the era between 1815 and 1845, because Jackson dominated the political sphere in the US. He was the dominant political figure that was almost as influential and as representative as Martin Van Buren. Van Buren was the only politician that could challenge Andrew Jackson in politics, because Jackson's characterization embodied the views held in the first 40 years of the early 1800s. Does that seem an apt characterization? Jackson maintained his image as a dominant figure as president from 1828 to 1837 when he fought for southerners as he garnered the attention of Whigs to preserve the Union. Jackson is regarded as a national hero that excelled in military and politics. Examples of this accurate characterization are his title as the "Indian Fighter" and his actions as President of the United States. In The Battle of New Orleans and Seminole Wars. His actions, while extremely xenophobic and racist, were revered by the general public, but he is still seen as a national historical figure. He had a decisive victory over the British in the Battle of New Orleans when he prevented the British from taking the Louisiana Purchase despite being outnumbered by around 10,000 troops. He was an astute militarily strategist that anticipated and fended off British at the Siege of Fort St. Philip in a critical point of the Battle of New ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Grant was nearly unknown until his success at Vicksburg, however it did not come easy. Grant was very stubborn and always wanted his way throughout the journey. He would contradict the opinion of other Union leaders, and oppose the advice that he was given. • 141. How Water Transportation Would Be Further Revolutionized... Water transportation would be further revolutionized by the construction of canals. In 1825, New York opened the Erie Canal, which connected the five Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Northern states like Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio also invested large amounts of money to build a network of canals connecting the Mississippi to the Great Lakes. As a result s, water transportation was much faster and cheaper. By 1827, wheat from central New York State could be bought for less money in Savannah, Georgia, than wheat grown in Georgia. This apparently had a great influence upon New York, stimulating the growth of economy. Such advantages for the North hurt the economies of Southern states such as Georgia, as its prices were no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The South, like other slave–based societies, did not construct urban centers for commerce, finance, and industry on a scale rival with those found in the North. Southern cities, instead, were small as they failed to develop diversified economies and rarely engaged in international trade. On the contrary, southern cities primarily engaged in local trade. They marketed and transported cotton or other agricultural crops, supplied local planters and farmers with such necessities as agricultural tools, and produced manufactured goods, such as cotton gins, sold mostly to farmers. Southerners neglect industry and transportation improvements, like the railroads and canals of New York and Pennsylvania, due to the over–reliance on slave–based system. As a result, manufacturing and transportation lagged far behind in comparison to the North . Despite falling further and further behind in respect to economic growth, the south still managed to establish an aggressive sense of nationalism that was entrenched in its belief of its distinguished character and its illusion about oppressing by "enemies"(i.e. the North and blacks). The South began to consider itself more and more as the true guardian of America's heritage. Southern tourists who ventured into the North viewed it as a "alien and remote land" and ... • 145. The Tariff Of Foreign Goods A tariff is a tax on foreign goods. The price of foreign goods increases with the tax, and provides revenue for the government, which makes American products more appealing. This is because the foreign goods that were cheaper are now more expensive. However, why was there a need for tariffs in the early 19th century (1800)? The reason is because, American industries were young, Britain flooded the US market with cheap goods after the War of 1812, and foreign goods have been often cheaper. In order to make sure American businesses could prosper, there had to be tariffs on the foreign goods. The tariff of 1816 was the first substantial protective tariff of the American System; supported by Henry Clay, but opposed by John C. Calhoun and Southern cotton growers. The tariff of 1824 increased the rate of the protective tariff and opposition in the South grew. In the Tariff of 1828 (Tariff of Abominations), there were higher protective tariffs to New England Mills; and Southerners were outraged including Calhoun. On July 11, 1804, a bullet from Aaron Burr's pistol put an end to the life of Alexander Hamilton. However, it did not put an end to Hamilton's vision for America. In 1806, a twenty–nine year old Kentuckian entered the U.S Senate and breathed life into Hamilton's vision. His name was Henry Clay. • 149. Protective Tariffs are taxes placed on imported goods that are from foreign countries and their duty is to raise the price of foreign goods, making them less attractive to consumers protecting them from foreign competition such as; The Tariff of 1816 that placed a 20–25 percent tax on foreign goods, The Tariff of 1824 which placed a 35 percent duty tax on imported iron, wool, hemp, and cotton, finally the Tariff of 1828 which is also known as the Tariff of Abominations it was the third protective tariff and increased taxes to almost 50 percent. European factories during 1816 were far more experienced and with that great capability American factories couldn't compare because their factories were new, and with that major difference in prices America couldn't compare to the Europeans.
