- This essay shows that you clearly grasp the important points of the play, and it
brings up a potentially interesting argument about "Trifles." As you revise this
essay for your Final Portfolio, try to explain your ideas in more detail and to use
more textual evidence to make your argument clearer. You could also try
bringing in some more support from the background readings that we did for
"Trifles," to help show your readers women's position in society and in a court of
law at the time that this play is set.

This essay starts out with a good question to provide focus, but as the
essay progresses, it doesn't really stick to this focus. I think part of the
problem here may be that you did not entirely understand what the
assignment was asking you to do for this essay. So the first step in revising
would be to go back and read the Essay Topic and Requirements page
again. Since it seems like your main focus in this essay is going to be on
Disney's adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, try making a list of specific
ways (like adding a "villain" in the character of Gaston, which was a good
point to bring up) that Disney has changed things from Beaumont's 1757
written version to their 1991 animated film. Then think about how these
changes have either improved or detracted from the story. The other thing
that needs work in this essay is the research component. The assignment
requirements state that you need to use at least three secondary/critical
sources. These would be books, articles, or web pages that discuss one or
both versions of Beauty and the Beast, or Disney's approach to adapting
fairy tales in general. Right now all of the sources listed in your works cited
are primary sources. Primary sources are the texts that you are analyzing,
and while you do need to include at least two primary sources in this essay,
adding additional stories like "Little Red Riding Hood" and Cinderella can
just confuse readers, or cause your essay to lose its focus.

Why Disney ?
Growing up if Disney wrote a fairy tale book, we as kids knew
there will be a movie soon
to be released. So the common thing to do is read the book and
then watch the movie expecting
the movie to be exactly the same as the book but Disney tends
to add or delete details from the
story. Beauty and the Beast was one of my most favorite fairy
tale Disney produced but the
original book was wrote by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve.
5. But from my experience from the
book to the movie I viewed the difference. But comparing the
Disney book, Disney movie, and
also movies made by others will cause some comparison and
differences. Although Disney tends
to change the details of Beauty and the Beast from the original
book to the movie, how might the
story be affected ?
Disney may change the plot, writing, characters, setting, names,
etc but only to better the
story. When it comes to fairy tales then some things are made
up or imagined because that’s the
point of a fiction tale. Beauty and the Beast was made for kids
who are young due to young
minded kids having the ability to imagine things. And when it
comes to any fairy tale most of
them are made based on imagination. But when making a book
into a movie of course there are
edits and adjustments made to accommodate the fairy tale to be
better understanding in a movie
form. And that’s the process of Beauty and the Beast, Little Red
Riding Hood, and Cinderella
went through becoming a film from a book.
6. Rivera
From deleting and adding details the main concept of the fairy
tale stays the same but we
as viewers have to view how does this affect the story. From
Beauty and the Beast the villain
there isn't none, Beauty pretty much stays home and tends to the
house, the rose is only in the
beginning of the story when Maurice picks it from the Beast's
garden. These little details are
from the book whereas in the movie these events occur but in a
different action. In the movie
Gaston is the villain, and the rose is enchanted and it's a very
important part of the story as it
blooms for many years as an hourglass for the Beast. These
little details make the story more
interesting because they show Gaston being the bad guy but in
the book there's no villain.
Drawing from this point the best interest of Disney from making
these little adjustments in
details help all viewers not just a certain group of viewers
understand the concept of the plot.
Disney tends to have this formula which they use when
changing a book to movie. This
7. formula was used to create the process for Beauty and the beast
which turned out in a positive
outcome. One major thing that was changed using this formula
was that how in the original story
there’s no villain but in the movie Gaston is the villain. Disney
created this because how can
sisters be portrayed as a villain towards their own sister. So
disney decided to show more interest
in the play keep the play more interesting. No, Disney didn’t
just remove the sisters; sisters
became a different reason for being important to the plot. The
sisters just played the role as a
jealous person, mean sisters; disney showed how the sisters are
affected Cinderella still just as in
the original story.
Beauty and the Beast was incredibly loyal to the original; same
costumes, same songs,
same shots, same dialogue, same plot. But there was some new
things added like few new songs
and characters, while fleshing out the backstories of the main
players. With Disney to do so I
Rivera
8. agree that they had the best intentions to make this book to film
as best as possible. And Disney
trying to do that it worked, this might be the greatest movie
Disney has ever made. This movie
was nominated for an Oscar before there was even a category
for animation. So the outcome of
this process lead Disney on to do more of the same projects
with different fairy tales.
Not only has Disney done this in Beauty and the Beast but has
done this multiple times in
fairy tales as in Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. In
Cinderella one important detail was
change which was the Prince meeting Cinderella at the ball in
the book vs meeting her at the
beginning of the film. Some may say that causes a red flag in
the plot because the point was for
the Prince to meet her at the ball and live happily ever after. So
introducing him so early into the
film will cause some confusion for the viewers.
In the book Cinderella really doesn’t speak that much
throughout the story but in the
movie she does. So for disney to have Cinderella meet Prince at
the beginning of the movie
9. caused for Cinderella to be more engaged in the story and also
let it be known she’s the main
focus. Disney changes this important detail because in the story
it’s not shown to be realistic,
who would marry someone they haven’t spoke to nor how can
someone have feelings for
someone they never met. Therefore Disney changed that around
and made it for those questions
won’t be asked. Meeting the Prince early it provides the viewers
how Cinderella fell in love with
him throughout the story. This makes the relationship more
plausible. Details like this that
changes from book to movie is to better the story and that’s
exactly what Disney did.
While these Disney remakes are fun, entertaining, and full of
the spirit that made the
original films classics, you wouldn't be over the line for
complaining that these movies are
basically the same as the animated ones. But keeping it the
same must be a positive because
Rivera
viewers won't get confused, plot stays the same, and overall
their number one viewers kids will
10. be able to stay entertained.
In Beauty and the Beast Disney has adapted the same
construction as the book. As a
production group it’s their job to look and revise anything in
the story line they believe needs to
be adjusted. And in this film that’s exactly what they did, made
little adjustments but kept the
important parts the same. As stated in the book last paragraph “
immediately the fairy gave a
stroke with her wand” this action is important part of the ending
because this is how the Beauty
and the Beast are able to return to themselves and get married.
In the film this exact action was
filmed in the movie because once again it brings together the
meaning of the end to the film.
Somethings aren't meant to be changed and some are but with
some films like Little Red Riding
Hood things change but causes problems but when you only
make minor adjustments like in
Beauty and the Beast you gain a positive feedback.
Disney made major and minor adjustments to the story while
making the book to movie.
Disney changes how Beauty falls in love with Beast. This
11. causes the story to be more dramatic,
more romantic, more dangerous, but overall draws the viewer's
attention more doing this in the
movie. These types of feelings of the actions wasn’t shown in
the book, which caused the story
to be dry so Disney used “the formula” to spicy up the story.
In a fairy tale called Little Red Riding Hood growing up I’ve
read multiple stories about
this tale but ending in different ways. Some endings are the
wolf eats the grandmother and the
little girl, or the wolf just runs away after being scared of by the
guy in the woods, etc. So for this
fairy tale to have a film being made how do you pick the ending
and make sure that the ending
doesn’t ruin the plot nor the interest of the viewers. For fairy
tales like this, it’s hard for Disney
Rivera
to make a film and make it whereas making the film for other
fairy tales, having that one ending
everyone knows would be much easier. The point that is being
made is that with Disney being
able to go from book to film then the book itself must make
12. sense to all viewers but most of all
must have a common or repeated ending. The process in the
book leading up to this event was
the little girl going to the grandmas house in the woods to bring
her a cake because grandma
hasn’t been feeling well. But as in the film the point of view is
from a “sister” meaning the film
states the girl was killed by the werewolf which cause the sister
of the victim to come into a role.
Which the background of the sister was her getting married then
becoming a suspect in her own
sisters killing. Overall the plot doesn’t necessarily change but
the details does which causes a
confusion for the viewers. Going from the original story plot to
changing it Disney took a leap in
doing so which reacted negatively.
Trying to keep this plot the same for Little Red Riding Hood
there must of been a little
confusion whether or not to follow the process when making the
film. The experience from the
book and movie of Little Red Riding Hood made the conclusion
that not every fairy tale can be
made into a film. You wouldn’t want to make something that is
already good and make it worst,
13. it’s like taking an average test grade and retaking the test
without studying and getting a lower
grade than what was the point of retaking it.
In theory of this method Disney tends to do, Disney can only
make this work if it’s done
with the proper method. To do so you must not change the
overall theme of the fairy tale or not
only change the theme but try to use that theme and turn it into
something else as in drift away.
For some to say the process of book to film is interesting some
might disagree due to how they
Rivera
view the film and book. But all in all Disney who is great at
fairy tales, Disney still has the
ability to change book to movie and still have the story make
sense only if done correctly.

Right Or Wrong
To justify someone from being right or wrong needs to be
proven but then again if the
person’s motive is justifiable then is the action acceptable? In
the text Trifles by Susan Glaspell,
a man (Mr. Wright) was killed by his wife (Mrs. Wright) and a
16. woman finds evidence to assume
Mrs Wright wrong but doesn’t handover the evidence. The
situation to withhold the evidence
isn't justified due to the fact of people needing to be responsible
for their actions. Being
responsible for your actions is something that needs to be held
to a standard because if not then
everyone can act out. Due to what type of power men had they
were able to get away with
anything so the only way a women can escape from this is to
take justice into her own hands.
Showing or having feelings towards a situation can impact a
person's decision and
judgement calls. Glaspell makes the readers and viewers feel
sympathetic towards the wife (Mrs.
Wright) which tries to get the people to feel as if her actions
isn’t wrong. In the poem Mrs. Hale
said “ I might have known she needed help, I know how things
can get for women,” (Glaspell
988) Mrs. Hale is implicating some sympathy towards her to
better understand why she did it.
But doing that can distract the overall situation the murder she
committed, switching the focus to
17. Mrs. Wright. Glaspell wanted to make the audience feel
sympathetic towards the murder so the
reader can have a reason to under why the evidence wasn’t
brought forward.
Being distracted from teaching a person a lesson because of how
you feel wouldn't teach
them the wrong of their actions, then how will they learn not to
do it again ? If there isn't a
consequence for the wrong actions, people will continue to do
things wrong based on the simple
fact that there won't be any repercussions for what they are
doing. Depending on the way a
problem is viewed depends on a right or wrong judgement
meaning someone may have been
through a similar situation so would understand it better rather
than a person who hasn't been put
through it. Mrs. Hale knows why Mrs. Wright did what she did
because in that day and age
women didn't have the same rights as males which caused them
to be looked and treated
different. But an outsider like a reader in this day and age can’t
relate to what females went
through before compare to now. The historical meaning has to
due with whether the women
18. holding the evidence is justified because it will show what
women went through in 1916 to
2000’s.
The reasoning behind the situation is if right is right the wrong
is wrong how can wrong
be justified as right. When a community is shown that actions
that aren’t right is ignored as it
being okay will cause a lash out. Holding the evidence back
from proving the truth is just
causing a chain of reactions. If another women in this similar
situation as Mrs. Wright will do the
same actions due to her believing it’s justified to being
acceptable by others? Until a society
demands justice then a person will continue to do wrongful
things with a terrible motive but until
that happens the justice system wouldn't be equal. Being able to
have it equal things will have to
be fixed from both men and women, but for now the play
doesn’t show that therefor women have
to take matters into her own hands. The meaning to be qual
means for everyone no matter what
is held to high stand-point when it comes to a crime.
19. Women in the old school days had to deal with unreasonable
actions from men like
yelling, getting abused, and being treated with unlivable
circumstances. The only way for a
woman to get justice against the husband is to leave them or kill
them which is show in Trifles.
For instance Mrs. Hale explains why she doesn’t go over Mrs.
Wright house by saying to The
County Attorney “it never seemed like a cheerful place”
(Glaspell 982) meaning the house isn’t a
place where you wanna be because the type of energy or
problems that come with the house.
But leaving the husband is really impossible because you
wouldn't know if they would let you,
which would cause a bigger dilemma. No one can understand
what you’re exactly going through
because they aren’t you, so yes the justice in the play is shown
as if Mrs. Wright had only one
option to be able to leave her husband. The County Attorney
states “no she doesn't need
supervising” (Glaspell 989) which is odd due to the fact of her
killing someone which will cause
20. her to be very dangerous. The characters in the play view her
actions as her “legal” way to deal
with her situation.
Leading to my last conclusion which is this situation is best
compared to ethics, ethics
means moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the
conducting of an activity. After
committing a crime how does your morales change. Is Mrs
Wright action justifiable due to her
morales thinking if she killed him things will be okay or is she
wrong ? Mrs. Wright action is
unethical because killing someone no matter what isn’t the
proper way to handle a matter despite
what is the situation. We can understand Mrs. Wright situation
and feel sorry for her, but that
doesn’t justify killing her husband or trying to cover that crime.
But someone to kill someone
just because and get in trouble wouldn't be fair or justifiable for
the legal system.
The irony of the play is how it’s shown as if a women couldn’t
harm a man when a man
is in control but then in the play the man is murdered and the
suspect is a female. For the play to
21. show the opposite of what is being portrayed gives the reader a
moment to think is the action
right because of what man is consider of doing in a relationship
with a female. As a grown up it
is your responsibility to understand what your actions bring to
the table and whether or not you
can handle what it brings. No one should be excused for race,
gender, reasoning because we all
know right from wrong.
After coming to the end of the reading we’re left with a
question, what is the true
definition of justice for women meaning they are as equal to
men as the rest. Not giving the
evidence forward means it won’t go to court for a grand jury,
which indicates there will be no
rightful solution to the case. The reading implies to the readers
the sympathy towards women but
does that justify letting the women withhold the evidence.
Glaspell leaves the readers with a
question to ask themselves what she did and how she got away
justifiable.
All in all the concept of the play is for people to try to be
22. understandable about what Mrs
Wright did. To withhold evidence from telling the truth has its
outcome which leads to whether
or not it's justifiable. But does the situation a female is placed
in help justify the situation to be
okay, which isn’t right to judge because the situation could of
been caused for different reasons
which people wouldn't know the truth. The only way for this to
come close to being
understandable is for us to be placed in her life but that isn’t
possible so therefore it will be very
difficult.

23. Instructions for essay 1
● Use the text of “Trifles” to write an essay explaining the
defense’s case for
Mrs. Wright, including how she would plead, what arguments
you would
make, which characters you would call as witnesses, and what
evidence the
play gives you to work with to help get Mrs. Wright acquitted,
or to help her
get a more lenient sentence.
● By the end of the play, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters have made
the decision to
conceal some evidence that could suggest a motive for Mrs.
Wright to kill her
husband. Is this decision to withhold evidence justified, or not?
What does
the play seem to suggest about the women’s decision in regard
to justice, or
to morality?
● Write an essay that constructs and defends an argument about
whether the
women’s silence about their knowledge at the end of “Trifles”
is a sign of
submission to or defiance of male authority.
● Reading between, or outside of, the lines: Discuss the burden
of
interpretation that “Trifles” puts on the viewer. How much of
the story are we
required to fill in for ourselves? What effect does the use of an
off-stage
24. character or event have on the audience’s experience of
watching the play?
How might that effect influence our opinions about the play’s
topic or
outcome?
● Consider the men’s perspective in “Trifles.” Why do they
approach the case
the way that they do? What can Glaspell’s construction of these
male
characters tell us about male-female relationships in the early
twentieth
century in America?
No matter which topic you choose, remember that your essay
should work closely with
the text of “Trifles,” and present an analytical argument about
the play.
Instructions for Essy 2
Fairy tales and folktales are often thought of as children's
literature or simple, predictable stories. Yet
many of these stories have proved incredibly enduring in human
history and culture. These stories often
have such great staying power because they reflect and teach
cultural values, contain lessons about life
or behavior, and present common archetypesLinks to an external

that can shape the way we view the world. But, as we have seen
in our previous class readings, these
stories can also be shaped and molded to present very different
messages in different versions.
25. Therefore which version we are most familiar with becomes an
important question.

As one of our modern society's most prolific and successful
distributors of fairy tales, Disney plays an
important role in shaping these stories and the messages they
carry; you could even argue that Disney
plays an important role in shaping our society, through its
influence on the stories that we learn as
children. For this essay, you will choose one of the following
traditional folk or "fairy" tales, and compare
an older version to a more modern Disney adaptation. While
different stories and comparisons by
different writers will produce a wide range of possible
arguments, in general your central claim for this
essay should somehow focus on the ways in which Disney either
shapes or responds to some aspect of
modern American culture/society in its adaptation of the story
you have chosen.
For this project, you will be comparing written fiction to films.
You may choose to comment on unique
aspects of the film version of your story, such as music,
animation/artwork, character appearances, etc.,
but remember that you should also address the writing in the
film, including dialogue and plot. You must
also provide some discussion/analysis of the earlier written
version of the story that you have chosen to
work with, although the main focus of your essay should be on
how Disney has adapted this story (and
why, and with what effect).
