Global markets at a glance
It was the last trading session before Christmas and across
Asia's bourses, stocks were broadly higher, drawn on by a
strong US economic engine. But few traders were stirring,
with markets in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore only
open for a half day ahead of tomorrow's Christmas holi-
day. Overnight, Wall Street enjoyed a "Santa rally," as in-
vestors cheered data showing the US economy expanded
in the third quarter by the most in 11 years. The Dow
Jones Industrial Average closed 0.4 percent higher at
18,024 points - its first finish above the 18,000 level -
while the S&P 500 advanced 0.2 percent. However, the
Nasdaq Composite fell, snapping a four-session winning
streak, as biotechnology names weighed. Asian stocks saw
mixed trading early Tuesday, despite another strong ses-
sion on Wall Street, as oil prices resumed their downward
slide. US stocks advanced overnight, with technology lead-
ing the Dow and S&P 500 to record finishes.
Wall street
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 64.67 points, or
0.36 percent, to 18,024.11, the S&P 500 gained 3.64
points, or 0.18 percent, to 2,082.18 and the Nasdaq Com-
posite dropped 16 points, or 0.33 percent, to 4,765.42.
Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the
NYSE by 1,990 to 1,090, for a 1.83-to-1 ratio on the up-
side; on the Nasdaq, 1,399 issues rose and 1,353 fell for a
1.03-to-1 ratio favoring advancers. The benchmark S&P
500 index was posting 124 new 52-week highs and 5 new
lows; the Nasdaq Composite was recording 182 new highs
and 53 new lows. About 5.41 billion shares traded on all
US platforms, according to BATS exchange data, compared
with the month-to-date average of 7.78 billion.
Previous day Roundup
Equity benchmarks snapped three-day winning streak as
the Nifty closed way below the 8300 level on Chinese con-
cerns and profit booking in banking & financials, metals,
oil & gas stocks. After rising nearly 1000 points in previous
three consecutive trading sessions, the 30-share BSE
Sensex declined 195.33 points to 27506.46 today while
the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 57 points to 8267 ahead of ex-
piry of December derivative contracts (on Wednesday).
The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices were down 0.3-0.6
percent. The consolidation may continue for some more
time due to global cues, feel experts. They see Nifty mov-
ing in a range of 8200-8500 levels in near term, but they
believe the market may see new highs before the Budget.
