years, until he came up a stratagem
that would strike Troy and to get rid of
the Trojan people. They built a huge
wooden horse and placed outside the
Troy while the Greeks were all hiding
inside . The Trojans thought of it as a
gift until they were all stroked off by
the Greeks when it entered the Troy.
Odysseus was the master mind of the
stratagem.

Odysseus went to the land of
Cicones to get some food and
water. The gods got angry and
were disappointed when they
saw Odysseus ended up raiding
the place and took all the food,
water and gold. That’s one of the
reason why he lost many men.

THE LOTUS EATERS
After they left at the land of
Cicones, they ended up on the

them back to the ship, forcefully.

THE ISLAND OF CYCLOPES
Odysseus and his men left at the island of lotus
flowers and dock at the island of Cyclopes where
they encountered Polyphemus, the giant Cyclopes.
They sail in front of an inviting cave where they
found some wine, food, and pens full of sheep in the
cave. The owner of the cave, Polyphemus went back
and sealed the entrance of the cave. He spotted the
intruders and ate two of Odysseus’ men. As
Odysseus planned for escape, he gave the giant
cyclopes a wine until he got drunk and passed out.
After that, the men took the red-hot sharpened
stake they have made and poked out the monster’s
only eye. They had then escaped from the island.

THE ISLAND OF AEOLUS
Next, after they left at the island of Cyclopes,
they stopped at Aeolia, the land of Aeolus, the
keeper of the winds. He gave Odysseus a
priceless gift, a leather sack that holds all the
storm winds. Odysseus can sail home safely
as long as he keeps the bag closed.
Unfortunately, his men got curious about
what’s inside the bag and opened it,
unleashing it a fierce storm that blew them
to the land of Laestrygons. This made their
journey back home even longer and harder.

LAND OF LAESTRYGONIANS
Finally, after days of danger, they
found a land, but they had better
stayed on the stormy sea than landing
on the land of Laestrygons—cannibals
and people of gigantic size who
destroyed all of Odysseus’ ships except
the one he himself was in—which had
not yet entered the harbor when the
attack was made.
9. CIRCE’S ISLAND
At their next stop, it was at the island of Circe.
Several men scout ahead and encountered the
sorceress Circe, who turned them all into pigs
except one man lucky enough to escape.
Warned, Odysseus had set out for Circe’s house
armed with an herb Hermes has given him. She
is really surprised and confused when he
doesn’t. She asked him to make love with her,
but he refused to unless she swears to a binding
oath. When she does, they make love and
afterwards Circe’s nymphs bathe and feed
Odysseus. Odysseus told her that he wants his
men to be freed. After they are freed Odysseus
and his men stayed with Circe for a year and
then Odysseus asked her for help to get home.
She told him that he first must head for the
Underworld and look for Tiresias.
10. THE UNDERWORLD
Odysseus and his men head to the
Underworld. In the world of the dead,
Odysseus and his men lure Teiresias’
spirit with blood—a favorite drink of
the dead and asked his help. He said
that Odysseus will eventually reach
home and advised him and his men
not to harm the oxen belonging to the
Sun, as terrible things would happen if
they do so.

ISLAND OF SIRENS
Before Odysseus and his men left at Circe’s
island, Circe has also given them a piece of
information that they must not listen to the
Sirens—women who lure men to death with
singing that makes them forget everything. As
they passed the island of the Sirens, the crew
plugs their ears with wax, but the insatiably
curious Odysseus requested to be tied to the
mast with his ears left open.
12. SCYLLA AND CHARYBDIS
To get home, Odysseus and his men had to pass
through two cliffs. The Scylla lived on one cliff
and the Charybdis lived on the other side. The
Scylla is a six headed creature that would take
six men from each ship that passed by. The
Charybdis lived under the water and would
come up and take all the men and the whole
ship. Odysseus had to decide which cliff he
would have his men row by. It was a decision of
losing six men versus all of his men and his ship.
He chose to go on the side with the Scylla. They
found a way to distract the Scylla from taking six
men. They threw a lamb onto the cliff and the
Scylla ate that. They finally made it through the
passing way and headed for their next
destination.

ISLAND OF HELIOS
Their next stop on the journey was the land
of Helios, the sun god. Odysseus was warned
that he should not let his men harm the
cattle. If they were to leave the cattle
unharmed, they would all return to Ithaca.
When they arrived at the island of the Sun,
the famished men of Odysseus recklessly
slaughter and eat one of the cattle/oxen while
Odysseus was away. The sun god was mad
and destroyed their ship, drowning everyone
except Odysseus. He was then carried to the
island of Calypso.

CALYPSO’S ISLAND
Odysseus ended up at Ogygia, the
island of Calypso. He stays there for a
few years. Athena eventually steps in
and asks Zeus if he could let
Odysseus go. Zeus has Hermes go to
Calypso and tells her that she must
allow him to leave and return home
to Ithaca. .
15. ISLAND OF PHAEAcIANS
Odysseus’ shipped is wrecked and he starts
to drown. Then the sea goddess Ino comes
to his rescue and puts a veil over him that
keeps him safe. Odysseus washed up on
Scheria the land of the Phaeacians at
nighttime. Athena appeared in the dream of
Princess Nausica that she should go wash
her clothings at the riverbank in the next
morning. The princess went to the
riverbank with her handmaidens and saw
Odysseus. They brought him in the palace
and met the king Alcinous. The king knew
about Odyssseus’ whole story. He then
prepared a ship for Odysseus and helped
him get back to Ithaca, his home.
16. ITHACA
After a long years of being away at home, Odysseus
finally got home. But Athena disguised him as an old
beggar. Odysseus goes to Eumaeus’ house and finds
his son, Telemachus. Later he tells Telemachus who
he is but warns him to keep it a secret. Later they go
into Ithaca and speak to Penelope. Odysseus finds all
the suitors there, and he doesn’t like the fact that his
home is raided by suitors. Penelope is told that she
must pick one of the suitors. She decides that she will
make an impossible task for the suitors and whoever
wins will become her husband. The task is to string
Odysseus’ bow and shoot an arrow through ten
targets in a row. None of the suitors could do it.
Odysseus does it, still disguised as a beggar, and it
surprises the suitors. He then turns and begins
shooting the suitors. All the suitors died and have
been killed even a priest. At last, Odysseus had finally
revealed himself to his wife Penelope, and after
twenty years of separation, they now lived happily
