Samuel Clemens Influences
"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect," is a very well–known saying by Samuel Langhorne Clemens
(Mark Twain). Throughout his life and career, Clemens lived up to this quote. Many of his works were not only uniquely written, but they also dealt
with social and political issues in a way that wasn't in everyone's face. Rather, it was an undercurrent in much of his writing. For example, In the
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Clemens spoke out against racial discrimination at a time when America was greatly conflicted. He was a pioneer to
truly American writing and was not afraid to speak out against societal wrongs. Through his writing, Clemens not only entertained, but also taught
important life lessons and commented on issues in the world. Due to its unique style, understated hilarity, and the way it dealt with serious matters in a
comically realistic fashion, Mark Twain's writing greatly impacted many Americans and inspired generations of authors.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri to John Marshall and Jane Lampton Clemens. At age four, they
moved to Hannibal Missouri, a town just 35 miles away. Hannibal is a city that runs along the Mississippi river.... Show more content on

The river trade came to a standstill and being a river boat pilot was no longer a job that could make any money. Clemens left St. Louis and began to
travel all over America as a newspaper reporter (The Official Website of Mark Twain). He would write columns and stories that held people's rapt
attention and captured their imaginations. Eventually, Clemens became very famous for his columns. On February 3rd, 1863, Samuel Langhorne
Clemens first signed his name as Mark Twain when he wrote Letter from Carson City. He got this pseudonym from his riverboat pilot days. Mark
Twain means "two fathoms (12 ft.) deep" which is the point at which it is okay for a riverboat to navigate the

Samuel Clemens Influence On Mark Twain
In today's modern world, our human race glorifies and celebrates the influence of past and present, popular historical figures. We study them in schools,
and have numerous days dedicated to them. Despite the As honoring as it is to the beloved historical figures, many of their greatest achievements often
become overlooked by their outshining acts. One of these influential characters would be Samuel Clemens, or as most acknowledge and know him by,
Mark Twain.
Born on November 30, 1835, Twain grew up to become a well known author of many books and poems. Through his works, he was able to advance
and influence a whole country, and continue to do so for over 100 years (Greenblatt, paragraph one, 2010). Now, you may be wondering how such a
man from the small town of Florida, Missouri, became the iconic American literature figure (Quirk, paragraph one). Though discouraged by his family,

Throughout his publications, there is an underlying theme presented. This theme was the movement for civil rights. Within his life, Twain influenced
the movement to abolish slavery and create an equal America. Twain always showed his support for black rights throughout his life. Between the
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, where Huck exclaims, 'All right, then, I'll go to hell,' after deciding to help Jim escape his captors to go to his
family, and Pudd'nhead Wilson, the story of the partially white slave, who switches babies with her masters because they look similar. He even
commented, "I do not believe I would very cheerfully help a white student who would ask for the benevolence of a stranger, but I do not feel so
about the other color," and "We have ground the manhood out of them, and the shame is ours, not theirs, and we should pay for it," in a letter to Yale

The Rhetorical Analysis Of A Presidential Candidate By...
Samuel Langhorne Clemens better known by the name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. Twain
was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, and served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of
his older brother Orion Clemens. He became nothing less than a national treasure. He captured a world audience with stories of boyhood adventure and
with commentary on man's faults that is humorous even while it probes the roots of human behavior. One of his most famous essays (satire) that I will
analyze is, "A Presidential Candidate", which was written on June 9th, 1879, in which he evokes a sarcastic tone to mock presidential candidates by
using syntax, diction, irony, and examples from his own past.
In his work, he embodies the characteristic of honesty, which is uncommon among candidates. His main purpose was to categorize politicians as
inhumane people. He believes they are untruthful, cowardly individuals because they disguise themselves and attempt to hide their guilt. He begins
the essay by saying he has made up his mind about running for President. But unlike the others, he is going to, "...own up in advance to all the
wickedness I have done, and if any Congressional committee is disposed to prowl around my biography in the hope of discovering any dark and
deadly deed that I have secreted, why–let it prowl" (para.1). He sought to dive into the election as an open book,

Rhetorical Analysis Of Ezra Pound 's His Philosophy And...
Ezra Pound was one of the most famous and influential figures in the Modernist literature movement. "Make it new" was his philosophy and the
rallying cry for Modernist literature. Whilst the Modernists tried to capture the new by a "persistent experimentalism", it rejected the traditional
(Victorian and Edwardian) framework of narrative, description, and rational exposition in poetry and prose" . Modernist literature not only rejected the
old in terms of form, but also in subject matter– Modernism began to focus more on the self, on the internal dialogue. Whilst Post–Modernism is much
harder to define, one thing that is prolific in Postmodern literature is the re–working and imitation of the past in the form of parody and pastiche. What
I find interesting is that whilst Modernist were driven by the desire to create something new, they were mostly benighted traditionalists that were
reacting to the change around them. The Postmodernists however, were not lamenting change but using literature in a way that hoped to stimulate it. I
am going to look at this with a specific focus on The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot and The Crying Lot of 49 by Thomas Pynchon.
Of course neither Modernist Literature nor Postmodernist literature existed in a vacuum. They were both parts of wider movements as a whole– The
Modernist movement and the Postmodernist movement. The Modernist period occurred during a time of great change– rapid industrialisation and new
media which "disrupted the class

Essay on John Hancock
In all of American history, there are many men who stand out and emphasize the history ofour country. This man, John Hancock, is one of those
extraordinary men that stand out.John’s life began on January 16, 1736 in Braintree, Massachuchetts.John was the middle child of three. He
was the son of (Rev.) John Hancock, born on June 1, 1702 in Lexington, Massachuchetts and son of Mary Hawke, born on October 13, 1711 in
Hingham, Massachuchetts. Mary was once married before she married John Hancock Sr. Her previous marriage ended in her former husband’s

His age though caused a slight problem. He was almost nine years of age and all the first graders were almost seven. The master of the school,
John Lovell, found a nice solution. Since John was excellently trained in Lexington, Lowell moved him up to third grade. John was neither
Lowell’s favorite nor his worst student. By his fifth year, he was ready to begin “making Latin”. He translated from
Caesar’s Commentaries, Cicero’s Orations , and the Aeneid. The major purpose of the school was to prepare a student in the
liberal arts so he can follow the same path at college. The foundation of the school was classical languages, but with his mastery of the ancients, he
also acquired knowledge of history, philosophy , and theology. By the time spring came around in 1750, John was finishing his time at Latin. He
had completed the school’s curriculum and was preparing for college. Of course the choice was Harvard. He was armed with a conspicuous
heredity, money, and recommendations from Master Lowell. John didn’t have any trouble getting into Harvard. In the fall of 1750, John,
Latin alumnus entered Harvard College. At the age of thirteen and a half, he was the second youngest boy in his class, and he was ranked fifth out of
the twenty in his class. College work for Hancock was practically a continuation of his work at Latin. The emphasis in college was still languages

The Sacred And The Profane
The belief of a sacred space has been a highly contested concept since the beginning of mankind. Each individual may have a different perception
or opinion on whether a particular place is truly sacred. However, many of these places have a close and personal connection to certain individuals,
due in large part to having experienced a supernatural occurrence or witnessed a miracle of life. Often times, these places become associated with a
divine presence, and are ultimately labeled as sacred for a particular religion. In The Sacred and the Profane, Mircea Eliade describes the key elements
that define a space as sacred rather than profane. He stresses his belief that not all space is homogenous, and that there are certain places that hold...

It is this interruption in space by a holy spirit that makes the space qualitatively different from its surroundings, and one in which will eventually
become an axis mundi. Eliade defines axis mundi as a world center for the figurative connection between the different realms. It connects and supports
heaven, earth, and the underworld, allowing passage and communication from region to region. Often times, the spot functions as the world's
beginning, and may be found either as a natural object, or as a product of human manufacturing. But above all, the axis mundi brings peace and order
because of the centrality and unity that it may instill among a group of people, leaving the other unfamiliar and chaotic areas behind. As you will see
in the following biblical texts, hierophany and the axis mundi play a crucial role in the history of Jerusalem, and its resulting establishment as a central
religious capital and sacred space. In the first book of the Bible, Genesis, one of the earliest depictions of the city of Jerusalem as the axis mundi is
found, even before its establishment as a distinct city. God tells Abraham to take his "only son Issac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah,
and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains" (Genesis 22:2). But right as he is about to reach out for the knife and kill his son, an
angel of the Lord calls out to him from heaven and stops him

Summary Of The Short Story 'The Shawl' By Langston Hughes
In the short story, "The Shawl" by Cynthia Ozick, the symbol of the Shawl changes over the course of the story. For Magda, the protagonist who is a
baby, the shawl represents protection and nurturing. Once Magda dies, however, the shawl represents mourning and emptiness for Rosa, Magda's
mother. Similarly, in theshort story, "Thank you, Ma'am" by Langston Hughes the blue suede shoes symbolize varying ideas as the story develops.
Initially, Roger, the protagonist, has a desire which is not met, to own blue suede shoes, the shoes therefore, represent a feeling of lacking. Later in the
story Roger is given money to buy the shoes, at which point the shoes begin to represent his needs being met. Both Ozick and Hughes use accessories
as symbols to illustrate the protagonists transitioning between gaining and lacking proper nourishment.
The shawl provides Magda with sustenance and protection, which allows Magda to provide these same benefits for Rosa. In describing the shawl,
Ozick writes, "It was a magical shawl, it could nourish an infant for three days and three night". While the shawl provides Magda with all the nutrients
she needs to survive, Magda helps Rosa feel satisfied, despite giving her food rations to Magda. Rosa gains these crucial necessities indirectly from the
shawl through Magda, while Magda, on the other hand, benefits directly from the shawl. For both Magda and Rosa the shawl, in providing them with
the sustenance they need, symbolizes them having their basic needs met.
Once Magda dies, however, the shawl symbolizes an emptiness and dearth of nourishment. During her life, the shawl provides for Magda, which
allows Rosa to reap benefit also, but once Magda dies, and the shawl no longer provides sustenance. Ozick writes, "Rosa drank Magda's shawl until
it dried". The shawl dries up quickly, in contrast to the constant, never ending nourishment that the shawl possessed prior to Magda's death. The dried
up shawl symbolizes Rosa's lacking. Before Magda died Rosa's needs were met through Magda, however, now that Magda is gone Rosa no longer has
those needs met. Although the shawl, initially, symbolized Rosa receiving proper sustenance, once Magda dies the shawl symbolizes Rosa's lack of

The Friendship Of David And Jonathan
Saul's son Jonathan found great favor in David. Jonathan grew to love David, and helped protect him from Saul's wrath. The friendship of David and
Jonathan was the effect of divine grace, which produces in true believers one heart and one soul, and causes them to love each other (Henry, 2000). It
is possible to love other people even if a parent has hatred in their hearts towards them. When Jonathan could not stop Saul's march toward evil, he
could warn the intended victim, thus averting a tragedy (Fackler, 2006). Christians in today's world can learn a valuable lesson of loving others even if
there are issues that are impending on the situation that could cause anger to occur. Jonathan was loyal to David causing a positive reflection on his
covenant and commitment to his friendship with David. "And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of
Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul" (KJV, 1 Samuel 18:1). Jonathan vowed to help David and stood
by his word. Those who love Christ as their own souls will be willing to join themselves to him in an everlasting covenant (Henry, 2001). I was
unaware that David and Jonathan had such a special bond; and made me think about my own life and my commitment to my friends. There can be
strength found in God's word if you put him first as David did in his own battles.

Analysis Of ' Waiting For Godot '
Throughout Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot, a deceptively simplistic tale of two men waiting for the arrival of a seemingly divide entity uncovers
the truth of mankind's existence. Estragon and Vladimir, the two protagonists, are stuck in a vicious cycle of hopeful waiting, only to find that Godot,
the mysteriously omnipresent and omniscient being in the play, never arrives. While they patiently anticipate his arrival, they encounter a type of
bondage that illustrates the very significance of insignificance as illustrated through Pozzo and his human slave, Lucky. All four characters are destined
to acknowledge the nonexistence of life itself, each being on his own path to a sacred state of endless acceptance that is ultimately reflective of
mankind in its entirety. The ritualistic waiting illustrated by Vladimir andEstragon is a portrayal of how mankind's attempts to accept meaninglessness
are futile due to a nebulous force that constantly drives the characters. Unlike Pozzo and Lucky, Vladimir and Estragon essentially cannot leave the
stage of life because they continually embrace the notion of hope associated with the eventual arrival of the God–like Godot: VLADIMIR: Well? What
do we do? ESTRAGON: Don't let's do anything. It's safer. VLADIMIR: Let's wait and see what he says. ESTRAGON: Who? VLADIMIR: Godot.
ESTRAGON: Good idea. (13)
The two characters faithfully and religiously cling onto their expectations of Godot through "a kind of prayer" in hopes that

To Read or Not To Read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel published by Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name as
Mark Twain, in 1884. The story is more than just a story however as many adults, parents, and educators believe that this book is unfit for a classroom
setting. What they are unable or (unwilling) to see are the benefits of reading and analyzing this story. It allows students to understand history in
context as well as understanding the vernacular of the time, it also allows opportunities for discussing conflicting views and controversial issues in a
safe and controlled environment. History can be a vague concept to study and understand. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Leigh, Punchnels) While that is alright for a school to do that, and they have every right to do so, kids will come into contact with words like that
again and they cannot be protected forever. For example, Huckleberry Finn has been banned in schools nationwide for using the word 'nigger'
two–hundred and nineteen times over the course of the novel. (News, CBS) Many people have backed up and valid arguments for banning the
book and they are entitled to their opinions. Some parents do not wish for their children to be exposed to the content in the story at the age of the
child when the book is introduced. Violence and sexual themes in all forms of media have found their ways to today's youth. In just the 32 years
Banned Books week has been acknowledged, over 11,000 books have been challenged. (Leigh, Punchnels) The presence of witchcraft, encouragement
of 'damaging' lifestyles, violence, and negativity are all reasons that books have been challenged in the United States. All schools and educational
institutions of any sort have a policy regarding the selection of instructional materials. The Denali Borough School District in Alaska is a school
system that opened up to talk about their policy. Alaska is one of the few states in the United States that allows schools to more or less govern
themselves, giving them soft standards

Huckleberry Finn, By Samuel Longhorn Clemens
For the task I have been given in this paper, I believe that it is necessary to define the term "quintessential" both in my own words and from a dictionary.
In my own words: All encompassing or summarizing
Miriam–Webster dictionary however defines the words in two separate instances both applicable to this paper. They are as follows:
1.(adj.) the essence of a thing while in it's purest and most concentrated form.
2.(adj.) The most typical example or representative.
Huckleberry Finn, written in December of 1884, by Samuel longhorn Clemens (under surname "Mark Twain") encompasses the life, thoughts and
adventures of the 12–year–old title character Huckleberry "Huck" Finn. Throughout the book Huck struggles with a negative opinion of racism and
slavery that is otherwise not voiced by your everyday American southerner. The book takes place in the southern Midwest region of America often
referred to as America's "heartland". There are several other reasons for Huck Finn to be considered an American quintessential novel, some of
which will be discussed in the following essay such as the themes, character conflicts as well as how the book connects to the American people as a
culture. Also it will be covered, that some educators and parents believe that the novel should NOT be used in the classroom based on its at times
difficult content and demeaning themes, as well as it's portrayal of some religious and social groups of the time.
One stated theme of this novel often times tied

Samuel Clemens in Buffalo: A Woman and an Artist
Preface
While literary critics and historians alike have thoroughly examined the influence of Samuel Langhorne Clemens' Missouri boyhood and foreign travels
on his writing, scholars outside of Western New York consistently overlook the importance of the eighteen months he spent in Buffalo from August
1869 to March 1871. Though a Buffalo resident for the past twenty years, I was also only vaguely aware that Clemens passed through until Dr. Walter
Sharrow of the Canisius College History Department mentioned his local stay.

Rather than presenting a chronological account of his Buffalo experience–which Fried has done sufficiently well–I intend to thematically examine the
factors most influencing the changes in his artistic production. The following paper relies heavily on Clemens' personal correspondence taken from the
University of California Press' five volume collection of his letters. Additionally, Joseph B. McCullough and Janice McIntire–Strasburg's Mark Twain at
the Buffalo Express, the edited collection of Twain's writings for the Express, provided a useful source of his public writing during his stay in Buffalo.
Justin Kaplan's comprehensive biography, Mr. Clemens and Mark Twain, was also useful and careful to include much information about his Buffalo
experience. Unfortunately, no found notebooks or journals written by Clemens record the hectic years from 1869 to 1872.
Finally, a note of appreciation must be rendered towards the coffee bean. Without that simple vessel of life, this paper would not be possible.

Samuel Clemens AKA Mark Twain
Samuel Clemens, otherwise known as Mark Twain, was one of the most prestigious authors of the 19th century. Growing up he'd always spend
time with his uncle's slaves. The slaves would always tell stories and Twain could not get enough of these tales. At the age of eleven, Twain got a
job as a Printer's Apprentice and got the opportunity to increase awareness of what was happening around the world. When he turned 18 he headed
out east to work with several different newspapers. He got bored of this job quickly and after a few years he found himself working for a riverboat
on the Mississippi river. Due to the Civil War this job was shut down. In search of a new job he volunteered to join a Confederate group called the
Marion Rangers. He hated this so he quit two weeks later. Being jobless and desperate he traveled west to look for new work. After quite a few
odd jobs and "get rich quick" schemes, including his failed try during the gold rush, Twain finally found gold of his own when his first short story
"Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" was published. This story was the perfect example of regionalism, much like all his work. When he used
regionalism he made you feel as if you were in Missouri by the way he wrote it and the slang he used. This regionalist style of literature would show
many authors in the 2nd part of the 19th century how to write in a regional style of literature. All Twain's years of perfecting regionalism also gave

Company to publish his works and other writers' books, notably Personal Memoirs (2 volumes, 1885–1886) by the American general and president
Ulysses S. Grant. A disastrous investment in an automatic typesetting machine led to the firm's bankruptcy in 1894. Twains successful worldwide
lecture tour and the book based on those travels, Following the Equator (1897), paid off his debts. Stress and sorrow came with the deaths of
Twain's daughter Susy in 1896 and of his wife in 1904. His writings of the late 1890s and 1900s became more pessimistic than ever. Significant works
of this period are Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894), a novel about miscegenation and murder, and Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc (1896), a sentimental
biography. Some of Twain's later writings include

Closed Mind In Samuel Clemens 'Consistency'
Closed Mind, Closed Doors
In 'Consistency' (1923), Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, stated, "Loyalty to petrified opinions never yet broke a chain or freed a human
soul– and never will." Mark Twain– known for his open mindedness and the way he uses his open mind in all of his works– never one to have a
biased opinion before he knows about everything he deals with. Little did many know he works for a greater purpose, not just to tell a story; Mark
Twain writes his works with the great intent of giving advice. Just like in every other work, Mark Twain gives his readers a piece of advice; keep your

Loyalty to petrified opinions– well, that may lead to more severe behaviors such as, misbehavior, dictatorship, and, depending on the opinion in
mind, death or serious injury. A human soul depicts as a very valuable item and throwing it away because of close mindedness displays as a common
yet, stupid move on their part. If everyone continue to evolve around petrified opinions, they may never "break a chain or free a human soul" so,
anyone who can needs to open their minds up to the people around them and their ideas.
As humans, people make mistakes and, as Mark Twain displays, a major mistake humans make– loyalty to petrified opinions runs the world. If the
world could get rid of all of the mistakes they make, the world would become a much better place.
Therefore, Mark Twain really does care about the world tremendously and he tries to give everyone advice on how to improve it. Humans have
started ruining the world and the way many people look at certain groups of people. Petrified opinions may just cause humans to ruin the precious
world they live in and so many people's long sought after reputations. People will never get anywhere in life if they do not open their minds to new

How Did Samuel Clemens Impact On American Literature
Leading up to the American Civil War, Sir Walter Scott made a lasting impact on American literature. His romantic style was wildly popular,
especially in the southern states. Most of the nation's views on the war at the time were highly romanticized as a result. However, there was nothing
romantic about this war. Once soldiers witnessed the horrors of war, many of their romantic views were changed forever. One such soldier was
Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. The themes of American literature shifted drastically following the war from romantic to realistic to
bring to light the true atrocities that accompany war. Mark Twain's "The Private History of a Campaign that Failed" is an example of how Twain,
because of his experience in the Civil War, rejected the Sir Walter Scott romantic ideals of war and instead embraced a realistic treatment of the subject.
Sir Walter Scott was originally able to become a prominent literary figure in the South because he was writing during a tumultuous time in American
history. Following the American Revolution, the North and South were separated by their ideas for the future of the nation. "The philosophers of the
Revolution were nearly all Southerners– George Mason, Patrick Henry, Jefferson, Madison– and it was in the South that the greatest social changes
were made... democracy triumphed under Jefferson's leadership." (Eckenrode) The North continued, to some extent, to accept the separation of social
classes much like European

Samuel Langhorne Clemens Research Paper
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain) was an American author, who wrote during the Realism period, popularly known for his most
famous work "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." In many of his works, we see the realities of this era, how times had a massive difference between
today's times. Clemens is known for being one of the most significant writers of the 19th, as well as the 20th century.
Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri on November 30, 1835; sadly, he passed away, at the age of 74, on April 21, 1910 in Redding, Connecticut.
During his childhood, Clemens was raised in Hannibal, a large town located near the Mississippi River, where he witnessed various violent crimes, as
well as, hate acts against African Americans. The violent acts he saw in Hannibal would later influence him to write "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."
After his father's unexpected death, his family went into debt; this would later inspire him to write various novels. Clemens' literary time period,

Analysis Of The Play ' Waiting For Godot '
The play "Waiting for Godot" performed at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts provides an impressive adaptation of Samuel Beckett's
original work. First off, the Irish theatrical troupe, Gare St Lazare, is one of the foremost specialist on Beckett's work, which includes modern
interpretations of his work in "Waiting for Godot. This production combines a strong does of slapstick comedy, which is typically found in the way
Vladimir (Nathan Lane) and Estragon (Bill Irwin) are often seen physically interacting with each other when taking off boots, running about the
circular stage, and other back–slapping styles of "Laurel and Hardy" methods of interaction. In comparison, Beckett's play tends to reveal the
absurdity of poverty of the two men, which is depicted in a more serious depiction of their wretched lives. For instance, in one scene Beckett's
Vladimir is more prone to somber bouts of violence in the original play: "Enter Vladimir, somber. He shoulders Lucky out of his way, kicks over
the stool, comes and goes agitatedly" (36). In the Gare St Lazare production, the slapstick style of comedy is far less violent in terms of projecting a
more comedic view of poverty in the dire circumstances portrayed by Lane's portrayal of Vladimir. However, there are some elements of the absurd,
which are dictated by the presentation of Beckett's play in a smaller venue, such as the Skirball Theater at New York University. The "Irishness" of the
play is typically found in the

Samuel Clemens Writing Style Analysis
We learned about a lot of authors this past semester. Ranging from all genres and from all centuries, but there were some that stood out to me in a
positive and a negative light. One thing I noticed in all of the different authors was the mood that they wrote in. Each one had their own signature on
how they liked to write. For instance my least favorite author of the bunch Edgar Allen Poe was very dark and mythical in his writing. That's the first
thing that comes to my mind when I hear his name, that and his mustache. That's one of the reasons Edgar is my least favorite. Mark Twain, or Samuel
Clemens was my favorite out of the bunch and was the complete opposite to Edgar. Its seems easy to find the differences of the two and a lot harder ...

To start, and to touch on it again, they have extremely different writing styles. Mark Twain is very light and humorous while edgar is dark and
gloomy. This is evident in virtually every one of their pieces. In Huckleberry he constantly has jokes throughout the story. Nothing like edgar which I
feel like he doesn't know what a joke is. In the short story Tell Tale Heart, the narrator stabs the old man and he remarked about how he could feel
the heart suffering and the sheer pain he had. He connected that to when he had his family die he could almost feel their pain they were going
through. He said he had no remorse for the act. When I read that it startled me on how dark Edgar makes his stories. This is one of the main
reasons I dislike Edgar. I don't enjoy reading a story on fictional death and darkness. I'd rather read a more adventurous story coming from
twain.Another smaller difference they have that is evident in their writing is the point of view they write from. Edgar is famous for being one of
the few authors to write in first person. It sets his works apart because of the detail he can get into with his dark stories, which is completely
different to Twain. In Huckleberry Finn the point of view is third person omniscient. The difference between the two makes for a completely
different theme of the story. Edgar can go for a more personal theme whilst Twain has more of a life lesson for a society. Lastly, Edgar does a great
job on almost structuring his writing and making everything seem complex and make my mind wander as I read. I find this to be a strength of his but
also a weakness. It's hard to follow and makes me second guess myself as what the actual reason is behind the story. This is another bonus to Twain, he
makes the story one directional with some hidden meaning but, it makes you feel connected with him at the end of the

"The Plastic Surgery of Food"
This year more than 559,000 Americans will die of cancer, and another 1,445,000 new cases will be detected. (Kushi, Jack 3) According to the
American National Cancer Society, facts and figures from 2017 has linked that sixty years ago the rate of people who would get cancer in their lifetime
was one of eight, however, today it has risen to one in two men and one in three women. Several studies indicate processed foods are a leading
contributor to the rising cancer rates because of artificial ingredients, GMOs, and how human process these foods.
Processed foods can be classified as any food that has been altered from its natural state. "A nationwide analysis of U.S. grocery purchases reveals
that highly processed foods make up more than 60% of the calories of the food we buy." (Highly Processed Foods Dominate U.S. Grocery

bowel, stomach, and pancreatic cancers. Colon cancer currently ranks 3rd; with prostate cancer being 4th, for the most popular diagnosed cancers.

The Biblical Subtext in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot...
Samuel Beckett may have renounced the use of Christian motifs in Waiting for Godot, but looking at the character of Lucky proves otherwise. We
can see Lucky as a representative figure of Christ as his actions in the play carry a sort of criticism of Christianity. His role suggests that the
advantages of Christianity have declined to the point where they no longer help humanity at all. If you analyze the poem Waiting for Godot you can see
the huge parallels between the character of Lucky and Jesus. Lucky, bound with a rope, is the disgraced prisoner, very similar to the story of Jesus as
the prisoner of the Romans after Judas turned him in. Pozzo beats, yells at, and spits on Lucky the same way the Roman treated Jesus when ... Show

Lucky slowly chokes as the rope cuts into his neck just as crucifixion suffocated Jesus until he was dead. Pozzo, rephrasing Estragon's question, then
asks a emblematic question concerning Lucky, he asks "Why he doesn't make himself comfortable?". This question refers specifically to the
taunting spectators gave to Jesus, telling him to save himself and if he is the son of God to get himself off the cross, this also refers generally to
Christ's mission of suffering on earth to forgive us of our sins. Pozzo tells them that Lucky doesn't want to let go of the luggage because "He
wants to mollify me, so that I will give up the idea of parting with him". He also says that Lucky "imagines that when I see how well he carries I'll
be tempted to keep him on in that capacity". This is extremely similar to the way that Jesus believed that he had to carry out his burden of crucifixion
to awaken humanity's faith in God for time to come. Jesus directed his apostles to "make disciples of all nations and to teach them to carry out
everything I have commanded you. And always know that I am with you" (Matthew 28:18–20). Jesus wanted us as humans to act in his own memory,
or to keep himself on in that capacity, which was that of teacher, consoler, and in the end deliverer of salvation. In the past Pozzo had benefitted from
Lucky, now he thinks the benefits are gone. Something,

Regardless, during his time ofbankruptcy, Twain began to publish more to get out of debt. He began to create the works for which he is best

This novel is primarily about a boy, Tom, and his friend, Huck, who live in St. Petersburg along the Mississippi River. Their story is full of
adventure such as witnessing a murder, catching a thief, and finding a large treasure. What makes this book unique, is the way in which Mark Twain
incorporates the feeling of freedom and childhood into it. By doing this he reinforces what it means to be an American. Because this novel was one of
the first to tell a reader about the life of an American, it was the reason Mark Twain is called "The father of American Literature".
Much of the uniqueness that is found in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is also found in its' partner novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Mark
Twain is special in a way that he was able to incorporate the sense of freedom into a book while also addressing the topic of racism and
slavery(Ziff–Oxford). Many of Twain's literary works function as multi–purpose when it comes to addressing historical topics. According to the
Minnesota English Standards, by the end of eleventh grade, students should have actively read multiple documents about historical events and their
affects (Minnesota English). Because of the way in which Mark Twain revolves many of his works around historical events, he fulfills these standards
and therefore, should be taught more in high schools, as a way to get more practice in these areas.

The Importance Of Steroids In Baseball
With the birth of the steroid era in baseball many players have made the decision to potentially destroy their legacies. Although some argue that the
use of steroids in sports should not negate the athlete's chance to enter the hall of fame because they still have marvelous careers, they should be
denied entry because these athletes are not following the rules of the game, are not showing their true potential and are making the game unfair for
other players. As stated in the article Why steroids have no place in sports Ashby uses the word "this" in place for Steroid use, "This is a fundamental

To begin, Samuel Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain, use of the "n–word" expresses the racism that was involved in the history of America. Samuel Clemens

Samuel Clemens Biography Essay
Samuel L. Clemens was born on November 30, 1835. On this day Halley's comet blazed through the night sky. Clemens notably mentioned that since
he came along when the comet did, he shall leave when the comet does. On April 21, 1910, the day the comet shined the brightest it had ever shown,
Clemens passed from a heart attack. Ironically, this was also the day that Halley's comet made an exit from Earth's sight (Harper and Owens).
Throughout the lifetime of the comet, Clemens became an American icon in literature. With the pen nameMark Twain, his humorous travel stories

Samuel Clemens Influences

  • 1. Samuel Clemens Influences "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect," is a very well–known saying by Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain). Throughout his life and career, Clemens lived up to this quote. Many of his works were not only uniquely written, but they also dealt with social and political issues in a way that wasn't in everyone's face. Rather, it was an undercurrent in much of his writing. For example, In the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Clemens spoke out against racial discrimination at a time when America was greatly conflicted. He was a pioneer to truly American writing and was not afraid to speak out against societal wrongs. Through his writing, Clemens not only entertained, but also taught important life lessons and commented on issues in the world. Due to its unique style, understated hilarity, and the way it dealt with serious matters in a comically realistic fashion, Mark Twain's writing greatly impacted many Americans and inspired generations of authors. Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri to John Marshall and Jane Lampton Clemens. At age four, they moved to Hannibal Missouri, a town just 35 miles away. Hannibal is a city that runs along the Mississippi river.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The river trade came to a standstill and being a river boat pilot was no longer a job that could make any money. Clemens left St. Louis and began to travel all over America as a newspaper reporter (The Official Website of Mark Twain). He would write columns and stories that held people's rapt attention and captured their imaginations. Eventually, Clemens became very famous for his columns. On February 3rd, 1863, Samuel Langhorne Clemens first signed his name as Mark Twain when he wrote Letter from Carson City. He got this pseudonym from his riverboat pilot days. Mark Twain means "two fathoms (12 ft.) deep" which is the point at which it is okay for a riverboat to navigate the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Samuel Clemens Influence On Mark Twain In today's modern world, our human race glorifies and celebrates the influence of past and present, popular historical figures. We study them in schools, and have numerous days dedicated to them. Despite the As honoring as it is to the beloved historical figures, many of their greatest achievements often become overlooked by their outshining acts. One of these influential characters would be Samuel Clemens, or as most acknowledge and know him by, Mark Twain. Born on November 30, 1835, Twain grew up to become a well known author of many books and poems. Through his works, he was able to advance and influence a whole country, and continue to do so for over 100 years (Greenblatt, paragraph one, 2010). Now, you may be wondering how such a man from the small town of Florida, Missouri, became the iconic American literature figure (Quirk, paragraph one). Though discouraged by his family, he established a distinctive, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout his publications, there is an underlying theme presented. This theme was the movement for civil rights. Within his life, Twain influenced the movement to abolish slavery and create an equal America. Twain always showed his support for black rights throughout his life. Between the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, where Huck exclaims, 'All right, then, I'll go to hell,' after deciding to help Jim escape his captors to go to his family, and Pudd'nhead Wilson, the story of the partially white slave, who switches babies with her masters because they look similar. He even commented, "I do not believe I would very cheerfully help a white student who would ask for the benevolence of a stranger, but I do not feel so about the other color," and "We have ground the manhood out of them, and the shame is ours, not theirs, and we should pay for it," in a letter to Yale Law School Dean Francis Wayland. • 3. The Rhetorical Analysis Of A Presidential Candidate By... Samuel Langhorne Clemens better known by the name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, and served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clemens. He became nothing less than a national treasure. He captured a world audience with stories of boyhood adventure and with commentary on man's faults that is humorous even while it probes the roots of human behavior. One of his most famous essays (satire) that I will analyze is, "A Presidential Candidate", which was written on June 9th, 1879, in which he evokes a sarcastic tone to mock presidential candidates by using syntax, diction, irony, and examples from his own past. In his work, he embodies the characteristic of honesty, which is uncommon among candidates. His main purpose was to categorize politicians as inhumane people. He believes they are untruthful, cowardly individuals because they disguise themselves and attempt to hide their guilt. He begins the essay by saying he has made up his mind about running for President. But unlike the others, he is going to, "...own up in advance to all the wickedness I have done, and if any Congressional committee is disposed to prowl around my biography in the hope of discovering any dark and deadly deed that I have secreted, why–let it prowl" (para.1). He sought to dive into the election as an open book, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Rhetorical Analysis Of Ezra Pound 's His Philosophy And... Ezra Pound was one of the most famous and influential figures in the Modernist literature movement. "Make it new" was his philosophy and the rallying cry for Modernist literature. Whilst the Modernists tried to capture the new by a "persistent experimentalism", it rejected the traditional (Victorian and Edwardian) framework of narrative, description, and rational exposition in poetry and prose" . Modernist literature not only rejected the old in terms of form, but also in subject matter– Modernism began to focus more on the self, on the internal dialogue. Whilst Post–Modernism is much harder to define, one thing that is prolific in Postmodern literature is the re–working and imitation of the past in the form of parody and pastiche. What I find interesting is that whilst Modernist were driven by the desire to create something new, they were mostly benighted traditionalists that were reacting to the change around them. The Postmodernists however, were not lamenting change but using literature in a way that hoped to stimulate it. I am going to look at this with a specific focus on The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot and The Crying Lot of 49 by Thomas Pynchon. Of course neither Modernist Literature nor Postmodernist literature existed in a vacuum. They were both parts of wider movements as a whole– The Modernist movement and the Postmodernist movement. The Modernist period occurred during a time of great change– rapid industrialisation and new media which "disrupted the class ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay on John Hancock In all of American history, there are many men who stand out and emphasize the history ofour country. This man, John Hancock, is one of those extraordinary men that stand out.John’s life began on January 16, 1736 in Braintree, Massachuchetts.John was the middle child of three. He was the son of (Rev.) John Hancock, born on June 1, 1702 in Lexington, Massachuchetts and son of Mary Hawke, born on October 13, 1711 in Hingham, Massachuchetts. Mary was once married before she married John Hancock Sr. Her previous marriage ended in her former husband’s death.(Rev.) John Hancock was well–liked by his parish, was paid well, and was provided a very comfortable home. In return of their generosity, he was a “faithful shepard.”... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His age though caused a slight problem. He was almost nine years of age and all the first graders were almost seven. The master of the school, John Lovell, found a nice solution. Since John was excellently trained in Lexington, Lowell moved him up to third grade. John was neither Lowell’s favorite nor his worst student. By his fifth year, he was ready to begin “making Latin”. He translated from Caesar’s Commentaries, Cicero’s Orations , and the Aeneid. The major purpose of the school was to prepare a student in the liberal arts so he can follow the same path at college. The foundation of the school was classical languages, but with his mastery of the ancients, he also acquired knowledge of history, philosophy , and theology. By the time spring came around in 1750, John was finishing his time at Latin. He had completed the school’s curriculum and was preparing for college. Of course the choice was Harvard. He was armed with a conspicuous heredity, money, and recommendations from Master Lowell. John didn’t have any trouble getting into Harvard. In the fall of 1750, John, Latin alumnus entered Harvard College. At the age of thirteen and a half, he was the second youngest boy in his class, and he was ranked fifth out of the twenty in his class. College work for Hancock was practically a continuation of his work at Latin. The emphasis in college was still languages ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Sacred And The Profane The belief of a sacred space has been a highly contested concept since the beginning of mankind. Each individual may have a different perception or opinion on whether a particular place is truly sacred. However, many of these places have a close and personal connection to certain individuals, due in large part to having experienced a supernatural occurrence or witnessed a miracle of life. Often times, these places become associated with a divine presence, and are ultimately labeled as sacred for a particular religion. In The Sacred and the Profane, Mircea Eliade describes the key elements that define a space as sacred rather than profane. He stresses his belief that not all space is homogenous, and that there are certain places that hold... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is this interruption in space by a holy spirit that makes the space qualitatively different from its surroundings, and one in which will eventually become an axis mundi. Eliade defines axis mundi as a world center for the figurative connection between the different realms. It connects and supports heaven, earth, and the underworld, allowing passage and communication from region to region. Often times, the spot functions as the world's beginning, and may be found either as a natural object, or as a product of human manufacturing. But above all, the axis mundi brings peace and order because of the centrality and unity that it may instill among a group of people, leaving the other unfamiliar and chaotic areas behind. As you will see in the following biblical texts, hierophany and the axis mundi play a crucial role in the history of Jerusalem, and its resulting establishment as a central religious capital and sacred space. In the first book of the Bible, Genesis, one of the earliest depictions of the city of Jerusalem as the axis mundi is found, even before its establishment as a distinct city. God tells Abraham to take his "only son Issac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains" (Genesis 22:2). But right as he is about to reach out for the knife and kill his son, an angel of the Lord calls out to him from heaven and stops him ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Summary Of The Short Story 'The Shawl' By Langston Hughes In the short story, "The Shawl" by Cynthia Ozick, the symbol of the Shawl changes over the course of the story. For Magda, the protagonist who is a baby, the shawl represents protection and nurturing. Once Magda dies, however, the shawl represents mourning and emptiness for Rosa, Magda's mother. Later in the story Roger is given money to buy the shoes, at which point the shoes begin to represent his needs being met. Both Ozick and Hughes use accessories as symbols to illustrate the protagonists transitioning between gaining and lacking proper nourishment. The shawl provides Magda with sustenance and protection, which allows Magda to provide these same benefits for Rosa. In describing the shawl, Ozick writes, "It was a magical shawl, it could nourish an infant for three days and three night". While the shawl provides Magda with all the nutrients she needs to survive, Magda helps Rosa feel satisfied, despite giving her food rations to Magda. Rosa gains these crucial necessities indirectly from the shawl through Magda, while Magda, on the other hand, benefits directly from the shawl. For both Magda and Rosa the shawl, in providing them with the sustenance they need, symbolizes them having their basic needs met. Once Magda dies, however, the shawl symbolizes an emptiness and dearth of nourishment. During her life, the shawl provides for Magda, which allows Rosa to reap benefit also, but once Magda dies, and the shawl no longer provides sustenance. Ozick writes, "Rosa drank Magda's shawl until it dried". The shawl dries up quickly, in contrast to the constant, never ending nourishment that the shawl possessed prior to Magda's death. The dried up shawl symbolizes Rosa's lacking. Before Magda died Rosa's needs were met through Magda, however, now that Magda is gone Rosa no longer has those needs met. Although the shawl, initially, symbolized Rosa receiving proper sustenance, once Magda dies the shawl symbolizes Rosa's lack of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Friendship Of David And Jonathan Saul's son Jonathan found great favor in David. Jonathan grew to love David, and helped protect him from Saul's wrath. The friendship of David and Jonathan was the effect of divine grace, which produces in true believers one heart and one soul, and causes them to love each other (Henry, 2000). It is possible to love other people even if a parent has hatred in their hearts towards them. When Jonathan could not stop Saul's march toward evil, he could warn the intended victim, thus averting a tragedy (Fackler, 2006). Christians in today's world can learn a valuable lesson of loving others even if there are issues that are impending on the situation that could cause anger to occur. Jonathan was loyal to David causing a positive reflection on his covenant and commitment to his friendship with David. "And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul" (KJV, 1 Samuel 18:1). Jonathan vowed to help David and stood by his word. Those who love Christ as their own souls will be willing to join themselves to him in an everlasting covenant (Henry, 2001). I was unaware that David and Jonathan had such a special bond; and made me think about my own life and my commitment to my friends. There can be strength found in God's word if you put him first as David did in his own battles. How 1 Samuel affects Christians Today The teachings of 1 Samuel shares valuable ... • 9. Analysis Of ' Waiting For Godot ' Throughout Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot, a deceptively simplistic tale of two men waiting for the arrival of a seemingly divide entity uncovers the truth of mankind's existence. Estragon and Vladimir, the two protagonists, are stuck in a vicious cycle of hopeful waiting, only to find that Godot, the mysteriously omnipresent and omniscient being in the play, never arrives. While they patiently anticipate his arrival, they encounter a type of bondage that illustrates the very significance of insignificance as illustrated through Pozzo and his human slave, Lucky. All four characters are destined to acknowledge the nonexistence of life itself, each being on his own path to a sacred state of endless acceptance that is ultimately reflective of mankind in its entirety. The ritualistic waiting illustrated by Vladimir andEstragon is a portrayal of how mankind's attempts to accept meaninglessness are futile due to a nebulous force that constantly drives the characters. Unlike Pozzo and Lucky, Vladimir and Estragon essentially cannot leave the stage of life because they continually embrace the notion of hope associated with the eventual arrival of the God–like Godot: VLADIMIR: Well? What do we do? ESTRAGON: Don't let's do anything. It's safer. VLADIMIR: Let's wait and see what he says. ESTRAGON: Who? VLADIMIR: Godot. ESTRAGON: Good idea. Alexis Timm Mrs. Mirosh 1st hour English 11 21 February 2017 To Read or Not To Read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel published by Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name as Mark Twain, in 1884. The story is more than just a story however as many adults, parents, and educators believe that this book is unfit for a classroom setting. What they are unable or (unwilling) to see are the benefits of reading and analyzing this story. (News, CBS) Many people have backed up and valid arguments for banning the book and they are entitled to their opinions. Some parents do not wish for their children to be exposed to the content in the story at the age of the child when the book is introduced. Violence and sexual themes in all forms of media have found their ways to today's youth. In just the 32 years Banned Books week has been acknowledged, over 11,000 books have been challenged. (Leigh, Punchnels) The presence of witchcraft, encouragement of 'damaging' lifestyles, violence, and negativity are all reasons that books have been challenged in the United States. All schools and educational institutions of any sort have a policy regarding the selection of instructional materials. • 12. Huckleberry Finn, By Samuel Longhorn Clemens For the task I have been given in this paper, I believe that it is necessary to define the term "quintessential" both in my own words and from a dictionary. In my own words: All encompassing or summarizing Miriam–Webster dictionary however defines the words in two separate instances both applicable to this paper. They are as follows: 1.(adj.) the essence of a thing while in it's purest and most concentrated form. 2.(adj.) The most typical example or representative. Huckleberry Finn, written in December of 1884, by Samuel longhorn Clemens (under surname "Mark Twain") encompasses the life, thoughts and adventures of the 12–year–old title character Huckleberry "Huck" Finn. Throughout the book Huck struggles with a negative opinion of racism and slavery that is otherwise not voiced by your everyday American southerner. The book takes place in the southern Midwest region of America often referred to as America's "heartland". There are several other reasons for Huck Finn to be considered an American quintessential novel, some of which will be discussed in the following essay such as the themes, character conflicts as well as how the book connects to the American people as a culture. Also it will be covered, that some educators and parents believe that the novel should NOT be used in the classroom based on its at times difficult content and demeaning themes, as well as it's portrayal of some religious and social groups of the time. One stated theme of this novel often times tied ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Samuel Clemens in Buffalo: A Woman and an Artist Samuel Clemens in Buffalo: A Woman and an Artist Preface While literary critics and historians alike have thoroughly examined the influence of Samuel Langhorne Clemens' Missouri boyhood and foreign travels on his writing, scholars outside of Western New York consistently overlook the importance of the eighteen months he spent in Buffalo from August 1869 to March 1871. Though a Buffalo resident for the past twenty years, I was also only vaguely aware that Clemens passed through until Dr. Walter Sharrow of the Canisius College History Department mentioned his local stay. The suggestion that America's best satirist lived in Buffalo–a location that could provide a contemporary wit with a wide range of material–tickled my historical ... Rather than presenting a chronological account of his Buffalo experience–which Fried has done sufficiently well–I intend to thematically examine the factors most influencing the changes in his artistic production. The following paper relies heavily on Clemens' personal correspondence taken from the University of California Press' five volume collection of his letters. Additionally, Joseph B. McCullough and Janice McIntire–Strasburg's Mark Twain at the Buffalo Express, the edited collection of Twain's writings for the Express, provided a useful source of his public writing during his stay in Buffalo. Justin Kaplan's comprehensive biography, Mr. Clemens and Mark Twain, was also useful and careful to include much information about his Buffalo experience. Unfortunately, no found notebooks or journals written by Clemens record the hectic years from 1869 to 1872. Finally, a note of appreciation must be rendered towards the coffee bean. Growing up he'd always spend time with his uncle's slaves. The slaves would always tell stories and Twain could not get enough of these tales. At the age of eleven, Twain got a job as a Printer's Apprentice and got the opportunity to increase awareness of what was happening around the world. When he turned 18 he headed out east to work with several different newspapers. He got bored of this job quickly and after a few years he found himself working for a riverboat on the Mississippi river. Due to the Civil War this job was shut down. In search of a new job he volunteered to join a Confederate group called the Marion Rangers. He hated this so he quit two weeks later. Being jobless and desperate he traveled west to look for new work. After quite a few odd jobs and "get rich quick" schemes, including his failed try during the gold rush, Twain finally found gold of his own when his first short story "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" was published. This story was the perfect example of regionalism, much like all his work. When he used regionalism he made you feel as if you were in Missouri by the way he wrote it and the slang he used. This regionalist style of literature would show many authors in the 2nd part of the 19th century how to write in a regional style of literature. A disastrous investment in an automatic typesetting machine led to the firm's bankruptcy in 1894. • 22. How Did Samuel Clemens Impact On American Literature Leading up to the American Civil War, Sir Walter Scott made a lasting impact on American literature. His romantic style was wildly popular, especially in the southern states. Most of the nation's views on the war at the time were highly romanticized as a result. However, there was nothing romantic about this war. Once soldiers witnessed the horrors of war, many of their romantic views were changed forever. One such soldier was Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. The themes of American literature shifted drastically following the war from romantic to realistic to bring to light the true atrocities that accompany war. Mark Twain's "The Private History of a Campaign that Failed" is an example of how Twain, because of his experience in the Civil War, rejected the Sir Walter Scott romantic ideals of war and instead embraced a realistic treatment of the subject. Sir Walter Scott was originally able to become a prominent literary figure in the South because he was writing during a tumultuous time in American history. Following the American Revolution, the North and South were separated by their ideas for the future of the nation. "The philosophers of the Revolution were nearly all Southerners– George Mason, Patrick Henry, Jefferson, Madison– and it was in the South that the greatest social changes were made... democracy triumphed under Jefferson's leadership." • 24. Analysis Of The Play ' Waiting For Godot ' The play "Waiting for Godot" performed at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts provides an impressive adaptation of Samuel Beckett's original work. First off, the Irish theatrical troupe, Gare St Lazare, is one of the foremost specialist on Beckett's work, which includes modern interpretations of his work in "Waiting for Godot. This production combines a strong does of slapstick comedy, which is typically found in the way Vladimir (Nathan Lane) and Estragon (Bill Irwin) are often seen physically interacting with each other when taking off boots, running about the circular stage, and other back–slapping styles of "Laurel and Hardy" methods of interaction. In comparison, Beckett's play tends to reveal the absurdity of poverty of the two men, which is depicted in a more serious depiction of their wretched lives. For instance, in one scene Beckett's Vladimir is more prone to somber bouts of violence in the original play: "Enter Vladimir, somber. He shoulders Lucky out of his way, kicks over the stool, comes and goes agitatedly" (36). In the Gare St Lazare production, the slapstick style of comedy is far less violent in terms of projecting a more comedic view of poverty in the dire circumstances portrayed by Lane's portrayal of Vladimir. However, there are some elements of the absurd, which are dictated by the presentation of Beckett's play in a smaller venue, such as the Skirball Theater at New York University. • 27. Samuel Clemens Writing Style Analysis We learned about a lot of authors this past semester. Ranging from all genres and from all centuries, but there were some that stood out to me in a positive and a negative light. One thing I noticed in all of the different authors was the mood that they wrote in. Each one had their own signature on how they liked to write. For instance my least favorite author of the bunch Edgar Allen Poe was very dark and mythical in his writing. That's the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear his name, that and his mustache. That's one of the reasons Edgar is my least favorite. Mark Twain, or Samuel Clemens was my favorite out of the bunch and was the complete opposite to Edgar. Mark Twain is very light and humorous while edgar is dark and gloomy. This is evident in virtually every one of their pieces. In Huckleberry he constantly has jokes throughout the story. Nothing like edgar which I feel like he doesn't know what a joke is. In the short story Tell Tale Heart, the narrator stabs the old man and he remarked about how he could feel the heart suffering and the sheer pain he had. He connected that to when he had his family die he could almost feel their pain they were going through. He said he had no remorse for the act. When I read that it startled me on how dark Edgar makes his stories. This is one of the main reasons I dislike Edgar. I don't enjoy reading a story on fictional death and darkness. I'd rather read a more adventurous story coming from twain.Another smaller difference they have that is evident in their writing is the point of view they write from. Edgar is famous for being one of the few authors to write in first person. It sets his works apart because of the detail he can get into with his dark stories, which is completely different to Twain. In Huckleberry Finn the point of view is third person omniscient. The difference between the two makes for a completely different theme of the story. Edgar can go for a more personal theme whilst Twain has more of a life lesson for a society. Lastly, Edgar does a great job on almost structuring his writing and making everything seem complex and make my mind wander as I read. I find this to be a strength of his but also a weakness. It's hard to follow and makes me second guess myself as what the actual reason is behind the story. This is another bonus to Twain, he makes the story one directional with some hidden meaning but, it makes you feel connected with him at the end of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. The Biblical Subtext in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot... Samuel Beckett may have renounced the use of Christian motifs in Waiting for Godot, but looking at the character of Lucky proves otherwise. We can see Lucky as a representative figure of Christ as his actions in the play carry a sort of criticism of Christianity. His role suggests that the advantages of Christianity have declined to the point where they no longer help humanity at all. If you analyze the poem Waiting for Godot you can see the huge parallels between the character of Lucky and Jesus. Lucky, bound with a rope, is the disgraced prisoner, very similar to the story of Jesus as the prisoner of the Romans after Judas turned him in. Pozzo beats, yells at, and spits on Lucky the same way the Roman treated Jesus when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lucky slowly chokes as the rope cuts into his neck just as crucifixion suffocated Jesus until he was dead. Pozzo, rephrasing Estragon's question, then asks a emblematic question concerning Lucky, he asks "Why he doesn't make himself comfortable?". This question refers specifically to the taunting spectators gave to Jesus, telling him to save himself and if he is the son of God to get himself off the cross, this also refers generally to Christ's mission of suffering on earth to forgive us of our sins. Pozzo tells them that Lucky doesn't want to let go of the luggage because "He wants to mollify me, so that I will give up the idea of parting with him". He also says that Lucky "imagines that when I see how well he carries I'll be tempted to keep him on in that capacity". This is extremely similar to the way that Jesus believed that he had to carry out his burden of crucifixion to awaken humanity's faith in God for time to come. Jesus directed his apostles to "make disciples of all nations and to teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you. And always know that I am with you" (Matthew 28:18–20). Jesus wanted us as humans to act in his own memory, or to keep himself on in that capacity, which was that of teacher, consoler, and in the end deliverer of salvation. In the past Pozzo had benefitted from Lucky, now he thinks the benefits are gone. Something, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
