1. Genre
• Genre is the way that a type of media text is
interpreted by the audience, by a loose set of
characteristics that are generalised to each Genre, this
could be things to do with sounds, mis en scene or
even just the words said in the text.
• Types of genre can be such as Comedy, horror and
romance but there can also be some kind of hybrid
such as a horror-com, which is a mix of both e.g. Scary
Movie
• Things that determine a genre could be for horror;
bats, blood and knives as well as graveyards and dark
mansions.
2. Genre Theorists
• Rick Altman believes that genres are usually
defined through semantic and synaptic
properties. This means that they are defined by
the language used in the media text.
• Daniel chandler says that conventional definitions
of genre are given across by the theme or settings
of the media text.
• John Fiske defines genre as a way of defining the
types of media to please both the audience and
producer, by making them have a set of rules to
follow
