Question 5
1. Throughout the production of my thriller I’ve had to engage and learn how to use
multiple different technologies. Primarily it was the digital cameras and microphone
which I had previously had little experience with, however once I had become
accustomed to using them it helped develop my creativity in film-making because I had
individual uses for my microphone and the digital camera – for example using the
microphone to enhance the narrative of my thriller, which meant having to record my
characters speaking and then editing it behind the footage.
This was especially important for the dream sequence which for the first few edits the
microphone was crucial. From the basics such as attaching my camera to the tripod to
using the camera focus in order to improve my cinematography I progressed hugely
and gained valuable experience.
What have you learnt about technologies
from the process of constructing this
product?
2. This is shown from the huge difference in camera ability from my
western project that was riddled with shaky camera shots and poor
framing to my thriller. However I had to overcome many lighting
problems, which were mostly due to shadows being created from my
actors. I managed to deal with thanks to the many tools and techniques
that Final Cut Pro has to offer, therefore I could dim the lighting down in
these shots using a shadowing/lighting option. Although software such
as Final Cut was still fairly new to me as my western was seen as a
practice and therefore didn’t require as many edits as my thriller did,
which meant my editing skills developed hugely in the process of cutting
and editing my film due to the countless hours that the thriller required
from me.
This included:
using markers to change the volume of the sound, an example of this
is the non-diegetic sound of police sirens in my opening, where I had
to show the sound drop where a door was closing and ultimately
blocking out the sound.
attaching music/sound effects, e.g when my protagonist was waking
up and I used a shell-shocked sound effect to emphasis his dazed
condition.
applying different transitions, such as dissolve – this was especially
used through the dream sequence.
3. YouTube played a huge role in the editing and production of my
film, which meant I had to become familiar with YouTube converter
because a large proportion of my music and sound effects came
from there, examples of this is ‘Chinesis Guillotine’ from YouTube
which was the main music in my opening sequence - the process
of finding and transferring the music from the website was quick
and easy, done in a matter of seconds, which meant music was
easily accessible whilst editing.
4. Smaller websites such as ‘Dafont’ still had a role in the whole
production process, as it helped make my blog look far more
appealing and was easy to use, which meant when it eventually is
being marked it looks far more tidy and unique. The font I’ve used will
also be able to portray the themes and emotions from my film, as I’ve
used scribbled looking fonts associated with horrors and dark
thrillers, it helps blend in with the information I have gathered.
5. Art Of The Title Sequence was especially helpful because it
gave me complete access to any films opening credits, and
actually had an impact on my thriller because I used parts
from the introduction of the film ‘Se7en’ in order to form my
own opening sequence and was therefore hugely influential
in my production.
6. Slideshare which helped me convey the conventions and
ideologies of thrillers across the audience more visually –
therefore when the blog is visited either by a student, teacher
or the examiner they will feel more impressed with the
aesthetics of my blog.
7. The sound effect ‘Cinematic Whoosh Impact’ which
was from RoyaltyFree that was key in emphasising the
smashed bowl in my thriller, as well as many other
diegetic/non diegetic sounds I included in my thriller
such as the traffic noises.
8. Websites such as Survey Monkey gave me a significant boost as it saved
time because it was easy for my potential audience to access through
social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter, this meant
audience feedback could be analysed almost instantly and my
questionnaires filled out without me having to carry out the research in
person. From this I have learnt how important technology is in the
construction of my product because it is quick, efficient and time-saver.
