The student used various new media technologies throughout the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages of their project. Blogger was used to present work online and track progress. Prezi allowed incorporation of multimedia into presentations. Social media gained feedback and helped spread work. Photoshop was used for image editing and print layouts. Video equipment like cameras and Final Cut Pro were used to film and edit a trailer. Various software, hardware and online tools were leveraged at each stage to complete the project to a professional standard.

New Media in Horror Film Planning
1. Evaluation Question 4
How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?
2. Without the use of media technologies the
majority of my research, planning and
construction would not of being possible.
I have not only used them to present them
my work e.g. blogger. But they have enabled
me to grow as a media student; experiencing
new software and hardware has enable to
acquire specialist techniques.
3. Blogger
Blogger was the backbone of my project, presenting all of my
work online was really efficient and since most of my work was
created digitally it was extremely appropriate to use blogger
Blogger helped me keep a track of all my posts and allowed me
to present all of my findings ideas and journey from my research
to my final products
Blogger was important in keeping up to date and being
organised; the media hub in particular made sure I met
deadlines.
On blogger I learnt how to compose HTML so I could insert the
likes of my Prezi's and YouTube videos into blogger
4. Prezi
Prezi offered me a more exiting way to present my work.
I used Prezi mainly in the early stages in analyzing trailers and
marketing research
Prezi allowed me to incorporate medias such as images, videos,
YouTube links and text to express my knowledge and findings
Prezi was particularly useful because I could present
professional products along side my products all on one screen
which meant comparisons and differences could be drawn
The navigation feature of Prezi allowed me to create a path in a
effective chronicle order.
5. Facebook & Twitter
I used social media as a tool to reach my target audience instantly as I
could post my work and get a response conveniently without having to
ask individual audiences.
Responses allowed feedback for my work to grow more into a
professional product as I took on board critical feedback went back and
fine tuned my products. It also pointed out amateur mistakes I had
made.
Discovering my audiences likes and dislikes of my products helped me
shape it to suit their collective tastes.
Social media also gave me inspiration on how getting the word of a film
online helped spread it’s word rapidly to make the film a success this is
why I incorporated twitter hashtags in my products for example.
6. Photoshop
PS allowed me to construct my print products professionally. After using PS last year I
felt comfortable using it and I felt I ventured more into the wide range of tools provided
by PS this year
I not only used PS for the construction of my prints I used PS in the editing of my
images. I did not just change the images to black and white, I edited the colours using
curves, for example manipulating the contrast.
PS not only allowed me change my images to a black and white but by duplicating
layers I could erase the eyes so that colour of the eyes came through making the
images much more striking and the prints overall eye catching.
With the brush tool I could create splats of blood and PS allowed me to resize these
layers and erase parts of the splats to suit my print.
Being able to use fonts directly downloaded in seconds from Dafont meant I could
experiment with exciting and professional fonts such as Universal Accreditation which
would otherwise be unavailable to use on other programmes
7. H.D Camera
Simply without this I would not of had a trailer, the H.D
camera allowed me to put my research and planning into
action.
The H.D camera was brilliant because I was able to take a lot
of footage because it had a great storage and it picked up
sound well and the picture was very clear in daylight
Uploading footage was also easy I just open up final cut and
selected the log and transfer option with the camera plugged
into the computer and my footage was there
8. Slide Share
Slide share was very easy to use I set up an account and my
PowerPoints would download almost instantly
Slide share was a professional way of displaying my thoughts
and ideas very snappy and could be viewed online and
embedded into my blog.
9. YouTube
YouTube was significant to producing my products and I
benefited greatly from it
As YouTube holds millions of trailers, I used YouTube frequently
in planning to gain inspiration from existing horror trailers
This also allowed me to learn the themes and conventions of
horrors and I could constantly go back and stream horror trailers
which made sure I demonstrated these key forms and
conventions in my product to ensure that audiences would
accept my film
YouTube also allowed me to upload videos of me describing my
intention for the trailer and upload the trailer itself so it can be
streamed online.
10. Apple iMacs
Having access to an iMac on a regular basis was key to my
coursework it allowed to me use technology that was industry
standard and gave us as the best opportunity to create
professional products.
On the iMacs I learnt the best ways to save my files, so that I
was organized therefore I wouldn’t lose them and I also
learnt to convert them to the appropriate format.
For example I converted my trailer through QuickTime
converter to a mov. into my local drive in a folder with my
name on to be uploaded onto YouTube
11. Photo Booth
Photo booth allowed me to gather rich qualitative data off my
target market both analyzing my products and professional
products
Using interviews were more effective than continuously using
questionnaire because I can see the body language and tone
of voice of my audience.
As well as that they were able to elaborate on the questions
asked.
12. After Effects
I made use of the access to tutorials. Without videocopiliot.com I
would not of being able to produce a product on after effects. I
had no experience of using after effects and it looked far too
complex at first sight. watching someone step by step creating a
product reassured me and guided me to making my logo titles
for my trailer and has given me the confidence of using the
programme in the future
After effects allowed me move beyond 2 dimensional titles I
other wised created on Photoshop. The 3 dimensional effect on
my Cryogenic production title decreased the gap between
students and professional film and television companies.
13. iPhone
My iPhone allowed me to go round in my free time and take
test shots of locations I planned to use.
I also was able to create model release forms on a app
My iPhone allowed me to contact my models which was
important to remind them what time the shoot was and what
to wear; without my iPhone I would of being very
unorganized
14. Final Cut X
Previously I had not used final cut on my own so making a trailer on my own was quite
daunting.
Final Cut allowed me to put all of my footage together in a professional and creative
manner.
I learnt how to upload my footage through log and transfer and was able to create
folders to put specific clips and so my work was organised. I also created multiple
sequences so I could work and edit on specific parts of the trailers
I learnt how to trim clips and add effects to them such as fading in and out to suggest
the mood to the audience and create tension also learnt to speed up clips to increase
the pace of the narrative.
In terms of sound I learnt how to change the volume so I could heighten sound such as
the sound of the scissors clipping and lower the sounds then the sudden bang when the
antagonist appears on screen at the end of the trailer to make the audience jump.
I often used curves when changing sounds with sounds slipping in and out rather than
having clumsy changes distracting the audience from the narrative
The freedom of final cut also allowed me to create sound bridges for example I had a
character speaking on the phone whist the narrative was going unravelling on screen.
Following this project I now would feel much more comfortable using Final Cut X again.
15. Here I am making my amendments for
my trailer following my feedback
Here I am trimming a film clip and
placing it on my timeline
I amended my trailer by adding 2 new victims because 2 characters is unrealistic and
comes across as unprofessional plus having extra character presents the antagonist
as a cereal killer and comes across as more threatening to the audience
I changed the narrative in particular how the Pied Pipers kills his victims rather than
hands to hypnotising his victims via his flute although the flute isn’t shown in the
narrative the sound of the flute playing into killing themselves
This makes the film more psychologically scary and the audience will now hopefully
be able to draw pleasures from familiarities from the film and the fairy tale.
16. Google
Google was my search engine; it allowed me to develop my
ideas regularly.
I could use google to find whatever I wanted from images
from which I used for this PowerPoint to newly released
trailers.
Google allowed me to find existing professional products to
which generated ideas for my product to make my product a
better product.
It allowed me to have an image of a professional magazine
cover or a poster to keep me on track with my product
17. Grab/Cutter Tool
I used grab in my production stage to take screen shots of
me making the products as well as evidence of how my
products developed.
At the start of my project I used grab to take shot by shot of
horror trailer to help me construct an effective narrative for
my storyboard that fit horror themes and convention
18. Da Font
I used da font for finding exciting fonts to fit the horror genre
The fonts I found made my products look more like a
professional horror film rather than just using formal default
fonts such as Arial Black.
The fonts I downloaded were aimed to be exciting and
appealing for my target audience.
19. Still Camera
The still camera allowed me to capture high detailed picture
which was important because it meant when printing out
especially my posters on a3 they off high quality and were
not pixelated, ensuring my prints were to a professional
standard.
I manipulated the camera and the facilities in the studio to
create a horror theme. I used the lighting equipment to create
mysterious shadows and the black roll as background to
create more of a sinister mood
Being able to transfer my photo into Photoshop was easy
because I could remove the S.D card and upload them
directly onto the mac ready to open with Photoshop.
20. Tripod
The tripod allowed me to create steady shots without the tripod
all of my filming would of being shaky and as a result the
product would of being unprofessional.
The tripod was easier than holding because when I filmed it was
a very cold day and it would of being extremely difficult to hold
the camera still
The tripod allowed me to vary heights and angles allowing me to
achieve professional types of shots and create different
representations.
The tripod also allowed me to create effective pans across the
screen to introduce a location. This is something I saw in my
research e.g. a pan of a haunted house.
