Sioux Genocide Case Study
The Sioux people have been living in the Black Hills for over a thousand years they have been
living peacefully until there was gold founded in the black hills causing the Sioux to lose their home
and put on a reservation where they still face problems. Today they face the same problems with
poverty, police brutality, and theft of their land to make it worse the Government is putting a
dangerous oil pipeline that can destroy the reservation. The Sioux people a tribe that went through
so much in the past that even to this day they are still fighting for their rights, they have already
been kicked out of their homeland and put in to a reservation. The government is building a new
pipeline by the reservation that the Sioux people are protesting for it to be removed because there is
a chance where the pipeline can spill. Even if they protest, the government would not listen to them
because of their skin color if they were white it would have been a different story something like
that did happen because before it was move by the reservation it was in North Dakota and as it was
being put in the landowners started to complain. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Government is not going to listen to the Indians, because of their skin but before they decided
to move it by the reservation, it was in North Dakota but the landowners were complaining on how
it could spill on their land. They move it to the Sioux Falls where the reservation is, they put it right
there because they know that the Indians cannot do nothing about it. Another thing is that the
government do not that they digging in their ancestors graves and are ruining their ancestral

Summary :'sitting Bull '
Tatanka Iyotanku more commonly known as Sitting Bull was born around 1831 in what is now
known as South Dakota. He lived a life that many people would despise and attempt to get away
from. Sitting Bull is one of the most recognizable and important Native American's in history and he
was known for his bravery and standing up for what he believed in. He led his people in multiple
battles and did all he could to give them the rights they deserved. Sitting Bull's parents were Tatanka
Iyotanku, Sitting Bull, who was a Hunkpapa Lakota chief, and Her Holy Door. Sitting Bull had at
least four wives over the years. His first two wives died early in his life. He had many children but
he favored two of them. His favorite son was named Crow Foot and his daughter was named
Standing Holy. Sitting Bull looked up to his father, Tatanka Iyotanku, and wanted to become a
warrior. Unfortunately for Sitting Bull he showed very little talent when it came to warfare, he was
called "Slow" due to his lack of skills. Even though he was portrayed as being slow he was still
extremely brave and courageous. Sitting Bull was still reamed as being slow until he killed his first
buffalo at the age of ten on a hunt with his father. Sitting Bull was previously known as Jumping
Badger until the age of fourteen when he first went to battle. It is said that Jumping Badger used his
coup stick to strike his first Crow warrior, his father became so happy that he gave him his name

Pipeline Essay
On October 17, I attended a presentation at the 28th annual "Consider the Century" forum. During
my time there, I took part in learning about and discussing what is going on at Standing Rock. We
first watched a news video about what is happening at Standing Rock and then we had a discussion
about what we learned and what we think motivates each side to either promote or protest the
pipeline. Before this presentation, I had heard about the pipeline being planned to be put on the
Standing Rock Reservation, but I did not know much after that. Through this discussion, I learned
so much more. The Dakota Access Pipeline is being built by Energy Transfer Partners in order to
transport oil from northwest North Dakota to southern Illinois. The pipeline ... Show more content

Religion is a key part of the lives of Sioux people. They believe everything has a spirit, therefore,
their land has a spirit that should not be broken. The Sioux people have lived off of the land through
the vegetation and hunting game. By bulldozing and violating their land, the government is tearing
apart their lives and their spirits. The land and the spirits are incredibly sacred that when death
comes, the spirits are allowed to go on to a spirit world. During death, the tribe members mourn the
deceased heavily and bury them in the earth, under rocks or trees, and sometimes leave them out in
the case of fallen warriors. Along with the bodies being sacred, the deceased's belongings are also
sacred and are usually buried with the body to help their journey to the spirit world. Many
government officials are unaware of the practices of the Sioux people. This ignorance leads to the
belief that since we do not know it is wrong, it is not wrong. As a result, the construction and
digging up of land is ruining the burial sites of Sioux people from hundreds of years ago. After this
forum and searching for more knowledge about the pipeline construction through the Standing Rock
Indian Reservation, I understand more clearly the importance that the land is to the people who

Personal Narrative: I Am From The Cheyenne Tribe
I am Waynoka, and I am from the Cheyenne Tribe. Waynoka in my language means sweet water.
Just like the water that runs through the rivers that surround and cross through the Plains, my home.
Cheyenne means the "relatives of the Cree" but we call ourselves the "Tsitsistas" which means the
people. My tribe lives in the plains of Northern America, we lived in the states now known as
Montana and Wyoming, but we just called it home. My family was like all the others in the
Cheyenne tribe, me being one of two children, living in earthen lodges, the women farming, the men
hunting. I was like all the other girls, idolising Roman Nose and his righteous victories against our
enemies, learning my roles in our community that I will later have to fulfil,

Native American Pipeline Research Paper
It is widely known that for centuries Native Americans have been oppressed, used and discriminated
against. A sort of hatred towards our government and our people transpires among the Natives, and
rightfully so. There are many reasons for the Natives to feel exploited, yet protesting the pipeline
and fighting back to the American political system can give Natives a feeling of triumph and
accomplishment if they are able to successfully halt the construction of the pipeline. Murdoch
specifically states that "the last time Native Americans gathered and the nation notices was in 1973"
therefore we know that the building of this pipeline is very strongly opposed and quite important to
the Natives. There are many underlying factors that the Native

Literary Themes In The Film Open Range
The film Open Range shares similarities with the literary pieces that have been read, as well as the
primary source given. In the film, as Boss, Charlie, and Buttons go back to the town after Mouse
doesn't join them again, they find him abused by the ranchers. When they go and confront the
marshall, they find him to be fraudulent. The primary source and the readings had the common
theme of white male corruption. The ranchers and the marshalls were abusive and felt as they were
entitled to power. That attitude and sense of entitlement lead to the destruction of the relationship
between natives and Americans. Another correspondence is the way those men govern their people.
In The Fight of Nez Perces, the "governor could not comprehend such an attitude. He urged Old
Joseph to sign the treaty and receive presents of blankets."(317)The governor had used manipulation
tactics to receive what he wanted. The men in the film governed similarly. They were physically
abusive and and instill fear in their people. Lastly, although the not same, is the will people to
defend their way of life. In The Flight of the Nez Perces, Old Joseph had refused to sign the
governor treaties multiple times. He had certain beliefs for example, "no man owned any part of the
earth, and a man could not sell what he did not own," when the governo wanted their land. Old
Joseph stuck to his beliefs and fought for what he considered to be right. Similarly, in the film, Boss
and Charlie, fight and defend the

North Dakota Pipeline Analysis
In North Dakota, oil is a great source of revenue. Since the oil boom, transporting that oil has been
done through pipelines as well as rail cars. Recently, the Dakota Access pipeline has attracted
attention from celebrities and other civilians that are not even residents of the Dakotas, such as
Shailene Woodley, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jane Fonda, and Mark Ruffalo. Pipelines can be both
efficient and dangerous. The efficiency can be read in the ability to transport the oil to other states,
while the danger can be read in the environmental damage of an oil spill in a river that people
depend on for water––in the case the Dakota Access pipeline could damage the Missouri River. No

Those for the pipeline say that it will help the economy, and that it will be much safer than
transporting crude oil through rail cars. North Dakota oil producers will also get more revenue as a
result. However, those against the pipeline say that even though it may be swell for the economy, it
will not be swell for the environment. The gases that will be released from burning those gases from
cars and other sources will help advance climate change, and is ultimately bad for the environment.
If the United States just went to completely renewable energy, we could slow down the process.
Also, it was planned that the pipeline be built and crossing under the Missouri River, which is the
main water source for millions of people. Native Americans of the area––Sioux mainly––also have
sacred grounds through where the pipeline was supposed to go through. The land was technically
theirs in the treaty from the 1800s, but through deceit over the years, it has been taken from them. If
the pipeline needs to be built, then it needs to be rerouted in order to protect the rights and
environment of the

The Badlands And Lakota Land
When the Sioux migrated to the Great Plains area, they most certainly came across the the Badlands
in their discovery. The name "Badlands" is derived from the Lakota phrase makȟóšiča, meaning
Land of Bad Spirits. Today, some Lakota believe that the Badlands are a place to be avoided because
it is where bad spirits exist. This paper will discuss the geographic location, geological formation,
Lakota legends, reasons the site is visited, time or seasons to visit and Lakota stargazing associated
with the site. When applicable, Lakota words will be provided.
Geographic Location and Geology
The Badlands are geographically located in Southwest South Dakota, the Southern Unit being
within the Pine Ridge Reservation. The Oglala Lakota Nation co–manages the Southern Unit of
Badlands National Park.
The Badlands were deposited in layers over millions of years. The layers are constructed of
sediments such as sand, silt, and clay that have been cemented together into sedimentary rocks.
Different environments caused different sediments to accumulate there at different times. The oldest
formations are at the bottom and the youngest are at the top.
The black Pierre Shale is the bottom layer of the Badlands and was deposited between 69 and 75
million years ago when a shallow sea stretched across what is now the Great Plains. Sediment
filtered through the seawater, forming a black mud on the sea floor that has since hardened into
shale. Fossil clams, ammonites, and sea reptiles are

Napster Revolution Case
Madelyn Anne C. De Leon 3EAC
Management03 Paper
1. The legal issue involved in this case is the piracy of music from various artists that is easily
accesible to everybody from the website called "Napster". The moral issue in this case is the music
being stolen according to the music companies or the music was just being borrowed by people all
over the internet according to Napster supporters. The difference between the two is the legal issue
is based on actual evidence like there is a law imposed about this case while the moral issue is based
on strong likelihood or firm conviction. The systematic, corporate issue is about the website
booming and how it affects the music industry while the individual issue is the persons who makes

4.Ofcourse, music companies share a moral responsibility for what has happened. The main goal of
this music companies is their profit from the music that they produce but it seems that they don't see
any benefit from this happening. Many people would prefer to spend their money on something else
instead of purchasing pricey music unless they are fans. Fans won't exist if the artist weren't popular
and artists wouldn't be popular if there were no fans. There is no difference at all for a fan who
bought an album of an artist and a fan who downloaded the artist music in the internet. Both are still
fans who made the artist known. Technology like Napster did change the music industry both in a
good way and a bad way. Let's face it, nothing in this world is perfectly good or perfectly bad.
Everything has its own bad and good side. Good because like what I just said, people who are thrifty
or cautious of purchasing music may have a option to download it and listen to it for free and in this
way, it is easily shared to anybody unlike physical albums. Not everybody visits the music store
frequently. It's bad side is it is very accessible to everybody like some music may contain harsh
words which may influence the youth who downloads the music from the website and also physical
album sales

Napster: The Devil in Disguise
In the year of 1999 sound recordings were changed to a whole new world. Sound recordings stepped
into new hands known as Napster. Napster, to other sound recording companies, was like the devil
in disguise, ruining the sound recordings profits and business. Napster started something for
consumers but soon came to an end.
What is Napster? According to SearchCIO, Napster is a controversial application that allows people
to share music over the Internet without having to purchase their own copy on CD. Not only that,
Napster allowed people to download the music on to their own CD and could be played from their
own server and use chatting forums. (Rouse) Napster was created by a college dropout named
Shawn Fanning and one of his friends who was only nineteen. He became quickly popular on
college campuses. Some colleges were banning Napster due to the high bandwidth demands.
(Rouse) By the year of 2000, Napster had already had over 26 million users. Basically, according to
The Observer Napster was programmed to go into someone else's music files and choose the songs
they wanted and download them on to their computer, which also known as peer–to peer or file is
sharing. (Lamont)
Napster may have been popular with free lancers but not with other sound recording companies.
According to Implications for the Digital Music Library, members of the music industry filed a
lawsuit against Napster by accusing Napster of copyright infringement. (Crews) One of the biggest

Mark David Chapman Murder
Many could ask the question how a novel could lead someone to commit a murder. In the 1980's this
question swept through many individuals around the world. "Read The Catcher in the Rye, that is
my statement." These are words that came from Mark David Chapman after he took the life of Rock
and Roll songwriter/singer, John Lennon. A&E produced a documentary about Chapman, the
murderer of Lennon. It spoke about how and when Lennon was executed, the reasoning behind why
Chapman did it, the childhood of Chapman, and other interesting facts that related to this tragic
event. The way that A&E sequenced the events, helps the viewers to have a better understanding of
what was going through Chapman's head during, before, and after the murder was conducted. ...

This due to the traumatic experiences he went through at such a young age. This documentary dug
into life before Chapman was a known as a murderer. While Chapman was growing up, he can
remember living in fear of his father. This is because his father used to abuse his mother physically.
He reported that at points through his life, he has imagined getting a gun and kill his father. It also
was said that he fended off sexual advances from his father and from his mother. Although Chapman
was thought of as a "normal" boy, considering his IQ test score was above average, he was not
normal. Within the first two years of high school, Chapman got into drugs. He was constantly
skipping school. He was bullied because he was not a good athlete. Since he was bullied so much
and did not have friends, he counted on imaginary people in the walls for entertainment. With
finding out what all was behind and inside the head of the man that took Lennon's life, it helped
answer a lot of people's questions. Although gaining these answers for people, it will never give
them their wish, for Lennon to still be

The Purpose And Importance Of Monuments
Monuments are used to memorialize and honor moments, individuals and events of the past. Some
monuments do this better than other monuments. In creating a monument there are three essential
factors a group or agency should consider to make the monument as effective as possible: location,
design features, purpose and backstory. Why these factors? Location and design factors play a
massive role in the reception the monument will receive, based on its environment, size and looks a
monument will be perceived differently. The purpose and backstory are the two single most
important factors to consider in creating a monument. The monuments history, its reason, is the
reason just? Is the purpose proper? Does it accurately memorialize the subject? All these questions
come with the purpose and backstory of a monument.
Location; where the monument is plays a big role in how effective a monument is in memorializing
or honoring a person or moment. For instance Mount Rushmore, to the untrained eye, is four
important men of the past on the side of a mountain, but it is actually quite more. "I have to admit:
Mount Rushmore bothers me. It was bad enough that white men drove the Sioux from the hills they
still hold sacred; did they have to carve faces all over them too?"(Source C). Source C is saying that
the location of Mount Rushmore is disrespectful to the Sioux because that mountain is sacred to
them, and the people who drove the Native Americans off the land have their faces on that

Native American Themes In Louise Erdrich's 'Antelope Wife'
Louise Erdrich is a Native American author from Little Falls, Minnesota. Her mother is a Chippewa
Indian and her father is German American. Through her writing, she demonstrates native ideas and
culture. Native American themes are often present in her works. She shines a light on both
perspectives of her background. Some of her works mention reservations in Minnesota and North
Dakota which connects to her birthplace and where she grew up. Erdrich did not really look into her
native heritage until she went to Dartmouth and they had just opened the Native American
department. She delved more into the subject and started to use it in her writing. Erdrich gives
readers, whether or not they are Native American or not, a look at Native American culture from the
eyes of both natives and others in society. This theme is present in many of her works including:
Antelope Wife and Future Home of a Living God. Antelope Wife is a short story by Louise Erdrich.
Antelope Wife is about a Native American man belonging to the Chippewa tribe in Minnesota who
is a teacher. One day he laid his eyes on four women: three daughters and their mother. He was
determined to have the mother and he ends up kidnapping her. He gets her (the antelope) to fall in
love with her, but he was warned by Jimmy Badger that these women are generally curse the men
who go after them. Towards the end of the story, she becomes overweight and ugly and the man did
not expect this to happen to him. There is already a connection to native culture in the title of this
short story, 'Antelope'. Antelope is a spirit animal in the native heritage. Antelope symbolizes being
on the movie and action oriented. "Deep in the fields of tall golden grasses in the desert the Antelope
thrives, ever watchful and discerning ready to move in an instant. The Antelope perceives subtle
body movements and signals from the other members of the herd. When danger is near they move as
one, quickly and confidently with finesse and confidence, their maneuverability allows them to
disappear into the vast expanse of wilderness with no more than a moments notice." (Universe of
Symbolism, Antelope). This symbolism is referred to towards the end of the poem by Jimmy
Badger. "If you see one

Analysis Of 'I Was Sleeping Where The Black Oaks Move'
As a reader, a human, and a creature, what makes one connect to the natural spirit world?
Grievances, mourning, and anger are human emotions, but could these three emotions be used to
describe the natural world of Mother Nature? In 1984, award–winning author Louise Erdrick of
French Chippewa descent used personification, imagery, and a theme of unrest for the Native
American people and spirit to craft "I Was Sleeping Where the Black Oaks Move." Louise Erdrich
was born in Little Falls, Minnesota, and raised in Wahpeton, North Dakota by her mother, a
Chippewa, and father, a German. The daughter of two Wahpeton Indian School teachers and the
granddaughter of the tribal chair for the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation, Erdrich was bathed
in the culture, life, myth, of the reservation and Native American culture. In 1976, Erdrich received
her bachelor's degree from Dartmouth and soon moved back to North Dakota to pursue teaching.
However, two years later Erdrich received a fellowship to teach composition and creative writing at
Johns Hopkins University where she completed her Master's degree a year later. Upon the
completion of her fellowship, Erdrich moved to Boston and became the editor of the Boston Indian
Council newspaper, The Circle. Furthermore, Erdrich published several critically claimed works
including Jacklight a collection of poetry which included "I Was Sleeping Where the Black Oaks
Move" ()
Erdrick's poem breathes life to a growing river whose strong currents

The Life of Sitting Bull
Sitting Bull was a Lakota Chief who was known for his skills as a warrior as well as his wisdom,
which was highly valued by his tribe. In his life he battled against rival Indian tribes such as the

which had invaded their land and tried to take it by both force and by promised they intended to

As Sitting Bull matured, he managed to increase the size of his tribe's hunting grounds through his

Society as well as becoming a member of a tribal welfare group known as Silent Eaters (PBS.) At
the same time he studied shamanism and medicine, which made him a well–known holy man as

wisdom. After many battles against rival tribes such as Assiniboins, Crows, Flatheads, and
Blackfeet, Sitting Bull was chosen to be the tribal war chief in 1857. Starting in 1863, 6 years after
Sitting Bull became war chief, the United States military began to invade Lakota territory. The
reason for the invasion was retaliation for the Santee Rebellion, which occurred in Minnesota,
however Sitting Bull's people had no involvement. Sitting Bull fought against this first wave of
invaders, only to have to fight them again a year later in the Battle of Killdeer Mountain. After
another year had passed, Sitting Bulls decided to lay siege to Fort Rice that had recently been
constructed in what is now modern day North Dakota. In response to these act of bravery, Sitting
Bull was made principal chief of the entire Lakota Sioux nation in 1868, eleven years after
becoming the war chief. In that same year, a peace conference occurred in order to get the Fort

Native American And Native Americans
Whites settlers were moving West to the Great Plain. They were looking to start over with their new
land that were wild and untouched. However, many Native American had already been there and the
government were building railroads and roads. People rushed to settle in the west to mine for gold.
Cities and town along with railroad and roads building at a rapid pace changed the habits of the
buffalo. Buffalo were an important symbol in the Native Americans live they used buffalo as their
main food source and they use the skin to make clothes and teepee covering , bones for silverware
and hunting tools like arrow. The Native Americans make use of the buffalo not a single part was
wasted. While White hunts buffalo as a sport and the government hired professional hunter to supply
buffalo meat to railroad workers. Before settlers were in the west, the west was home to 60 millions
buffalo. By the end of 1870s the buffalo population was less than 1,000 and nearly became extinct.
With the nearly extinct buffalo population the Native American understands they have to fight and
defend their homelands. The railroads brought numerous changes to Native American. The rails ran
through many tribes territories and this bring conflict to both Whites and Native Americans as
Native American had different cultural views on how land should be used and used to live on.

Nevada Access Pipeline Is Running The Headlines
Introduction Recently Dakota Access pipeline is running the headlines. Native American tribes and
their partners, drove by the Standing Rock Sioux, have been challenging the Dakota Access
pipeline, a venture that would transport oil from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota and Montana
over the Plains to Illinois. The nonconformists, numbering in the thousands and including
individuals from several distinct tribes, contend that finishing the pipeline would profane hereditary
grounds, undermine the water supply, and unjustifiably trouble the Standing Rock Sioux tribe,
which is probably not going to profit by any financial advancement that goes with the venture.
Energy Transfer Partners, the enterprise behind the pipeline, recommends the venture will prompt to
more noteworthy monetary advancement and expanded security and productivity contrasted with the
trains that presently convey Bakken unrefined petroleum (Harris and Gonchar, 2016). Basically in
the entire issue there are many stakeholders but two parties are main. First, Energy Transfer Partners
and second, Native American tribes. Both the parties have their requirements and BATNA on the
pipeline dispute (Harris & Gonchar, 2016). In the following table reader can see the stakeholders,
their goals and their BATNA regarding the specific dispute.

The goal is to complete the pipeline, transfer the oil through Dakota and strengthen the bottom line

Function Of A Hero In 'Drummer Boy Of Shiloh'?
On Sept. 19, 2001, 17–year–old Ryan Harris entered Stevens High School in Rapid City, South
Dakota, walked into a Science class, demanded that the teacher leave, and held 15 of his fellow
students, including Johnny, hostage with a Shotgun and a pistol. For 2 hours, the students cowered,
while the young man blared demands for pizza, $1 million dollars, and a helicopter getaway over the
public address system. He shot at the chalkboard, the ceiling, and the window, making it clear that
he had plenty of ammo and that he would leave no survivors. But then, for one moment, Harris put
his gun down and Johnny lunged for it. Harris, realizing his mistake, jumped at the shotgun too, and
the pair struggled for control. Johnny, however, won the fight, and the gunman was overpowered
(The teen who saved his South Dakota school from a Columbine–like tragedy 4). The function of a
hero is to be selfless, needs to be an example of a strong leader and is not someone who is unwilling
to help.
In the poem "Drummer boy of Shiloh" by Ray Bradbury the drummer boy leads his men by playing
a drum beat (Bradburry 16–20). "You are the heart of the army. Think of that. You're the heart of the
army. Listen, now"(Bradburry 19). This is a big part of a hero because the 12 year old drummer boy
was selfless to play the beats for the army, and the army was counting on him to do the right thing.
That demonstrates selflessness even though he was scared he still did the drumming for the greater
good.

Peace Like A River Analysis
Peace Like a River is a strong story due to its elaborate and engaging characters, artistic aspect, and
its suggestions and belief on faith. Without the faith of God, the Land family would not have had the
loyalty to each other nor made the sacrifices they did for one another. Letting God be the guide and
savior in their lives, the family would have never found the missing links to complete their family.
The sacrifices and loyalty the family has, brought them closer together as one. I felt from the
beginning that Reuben Land, even as a young child, Reuben was unsure of his faith and the miracles
of God. But, he is often the only person that witnesses his father's miracles. "The fact is, the
miracles that flowed from my father's fingertips had few witnesses but me. Yes, enough people saw
enough strange things that Dad became the subject of a kind of misspoken folklore in our town, but
most ignored the miracles as they ignored Dad himself" (3–4). Reuben often looks as his dad as a
hero and recounts the early miracles by saying, "I now think of my survival as my father's first
miracle" (5), "the second, I suppose, is that the doctor turned out wrong about the brain damage" (5),
"Dad's third miracle–and one of the most startling, if not consequential– happened in the middle of
the night, in the middle of North Dakota, just after I turned 11" (5). The third miracle is referring to
the night of a hunting trip when Reuben killed his first kill. He talks about the bird just hovering
above him. I feel that if anyone has any question regarding faith and miracles, then that particular
person needs to read this novel. It has made me more spiritual that I already am. I really enjoyed the
writer's style of writing in this novel. The narration is written in the first person, which I enjoy. He
starts out the story saying, "From my first breath in this world, all I wanted was a good set of lungs
and the air to fill them" (1) and "when I was born to Helen and Jeremiah Land" (1). The first setting
is a small town in Minnesota, which is where the book was written. The second setting is in the
Badlands of North Dakota, "we are headed for the Badlands. August called it a big busted–up place

Monument Dbq Analysis
People are often memorialized for their deeds. These memorials can be settling a country to being
remembered for a great sacrifice. When a monument is considered, size, location, and the material
it's made out of is very deeply thought about. Why place a monument to Kurt Cobain in Wyoming?
It doesn't make any sense. If you build something out of wood, it can be burned away or slowly fall
apart over time. These three parameters being up the ideas of how to go about making the
monument stand the test of time. Source C to discuss where a monument should be located, Source
E to discuss size, and Source F to discuss what a monument should be made out of. To begin,
Source C talks about how location is very key in the process of making a monument or having a
monument last a lifetime. Referring above, a Kurt Cobain statue or form of monument to him would
not belong in a place like Wyoming. He was born in Washington state and toured around the country
with his band, Nirvana. Source C says the following, "I have to admit: Mount Rushmore bothers me.

The History Of Art In Nebraska And The Great Plains
Art in Nebraska and the Great Plains has been shaped by its diverse groups of inhabitants. Czechs
are one of many groups who added and enhanced artistic endeavors inside Nebraska and the Great
Plains. Czechs have a rich history of artistic pursuits. Famous musicians such as Dvorak and
Smetana, and the country's long theatrical history have shaped Czech individuals. The arts are in
many ways at the heart of Czech culture. Czechs brought this mindset with them into Nebraska and
the Great Plains. Czech immigration, during the 19th and 20th century, contributed to the culture

Czech music within Nebraska and the Great Plains as a whole.
Czech bands played a significant role in the Great Plains and Nebraska. The Baca Band of

The Secret Life Of Bees Character Analysis
Many people can have a more than one "mother." Whether they are blood related or not, they can
have all the traits a mom has to someone. Black Mary, for example, is a mother figure to many
people in the novel, "The Secret Life of Bees," by Sue Monk Kidd. The Secret Life of Bees was set
in 1965. The novel, written by Sue Monk Kidd, mostly talks about a coming of age process with the
main character, Lily Owens as she grows up. She learns about the love, family, and Black Mary.
Black Mary is a major piece to the novel for she is one of the reasons that Lily developed as a
person so much. The use of Black Mary as a symbol helps readers understand the novel's overall
theme, which is "people can have family even though they are not related by blood."
The symbol, Black Mary is significant to the novel as a whole since she gives people comfort and
strength. In the novel, The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd, August told Lily a story about
how Black Mary will stand in for someone until they come back when she said, "'Do you remember
the nun Beatrix, who ran away?' 'What do you mean?' the sister said. 'The nun Beatrix didn't run
away. Why there she is over near the altar, sweeping.' Well, you can imagine how this floored the
real Beatrix. She marched over to the sweeping woman to get a look at her and discovered it was
none other than Mary. Mary smiled at Beatrix, then led her back to her room and gave her back her
nun outfit," (Kidd 91). While Beatrix was away, Mary was standing

The Secret Life Of Bees Analysis
The Secret Life Of Bees
The secret life of bees was written by author Sue Monk Kidd and was set in South Carolina 1964.
Kidd creatively uses bee insects as an unhuman like object to express and symbolize the certain
aspects and ways of life throughout the novel. Specifically, in this novel the bees act as models of
human society. Sue Monk Kidd presents themes and ideas through the eyes of the character Lily,
who is 14 years old in the novel. These ideas are related to having a sense of belonging and also
Kidd uses Lily to represent the European's opinions on the African–Americans and how people can
change for the better, as this novel was set in 1964, a significant time in society for the African–
American race involving the Civil Rights Act.
The novel gives us a certainty of realism by reliving what happened in those times through a
character we can relate to, because she is trying to find herself, and I personally think all of us in
society are still trying to find ourselves every day, working on a better version of yourself.
In the novel 'The secret life of bees', the author Sue Monk Kidd aesthetically chooses bees as
symbolism to act as models of human society. Kidd sparks the idea of realism within the reader and
makes us as readers feel like we are living the story as the character Lily through the lessons she is
taught that we were also taught. Lily catches a bee in a jar and then not long after she decides to
open the lid to let the bee free, although she does this

Evaluation Of Teaching And Advising Essay
Statement on Approach to Teaching and Advising Much has evolved since my initial years at South
Dakota State University when I had no teaching appointment. During those initial years I took
advantage of any available opportunity to increase my college level teaching experience mostly in
the form of guest lectures in ABS 704 and other courses where I lectured on Plant Functional
Genomics and Abiotic Stresses. Based on this experience, I developed Independent Study
opportunities for interested students in wheat molecular breeding and in plant genomics. Interest in
this area was strong enough that I expanded it into a regular course and offered it as a special topic
("Introduction to Plant Genomics") starting in the fall of 2009. Those early years afforded me time
and opportunities to informally interact with diverse faculty to keep maturing my teaching
philosophy and approaches. Although most of my teaching in the last years is at the graduate level, I
have a special consideration for ABS482–582, an international experience to discover the
agricultural industry in Argentina. In 2007, I was part of the team that developed this course.
Unfortunately, due to an important health problem in my family I was not able to attend the first trip.
Later on, in 2011, due to unexpected faculty turnover, I was able to co–lead the course. During the
fall semester the students attended introductory lectures in Argentinian agriculture, economics,
politics, culture and basic Spanish skills.

Deterioration Of Brotherhood And The American Dream
Suzanne Hornak Professor Kizershot English 102 20 October 2015 Midterm Paper Deterioration of
Brotherhood and The American Dream Henry and Lyman are two brothers that had it all; freedom, a
car, happiness. What almost everyone in life wants, The American Dream. Until Henry goes off to
war and the effects of this ruins his brother's enthusiasm along with his own. In "The Red

have until it slowly crumbles and becomes bitter and they end up losing sight of the visions they
once held. Throughout the story the red olds that they own together is what embodies these brother's
bond from the very beginning of good times all the way until the very end. The story first starts out
by mentioning the two brothers and the car itself. The car clearly symbolizes the relationship of the
brothers. Erdrich's opening paragraph starts with: I was the first one to drive a convertible on my
reservation. And of course it was red, a red Olds. I owned that car along with my brother Henry
Junior. We owned it until his boots filled with water on a windy night and he bought out my share.
Now Henry owns the whole car, and his younger brother Lyman (that's myself), Lyman walks
everywhere he goes. (1) The author wrote it this way so that the readers understand what the car
means. The first line into the story it mentions the car is a convertible and "reservation" is bolded.

All Lily knew for certain was her mother was gone, so all she was left with was her abusive father T.
Ray. Lily explains "T.Ray because "Daddy" never fit him" (2). After years of making her kneel on
grits, being slapped around and screamed at, one day Lily got into an argument with her father about
her mother not caring about her when Lily heard a voice "Lilly Melissa Owens, your jar is open"
(41). That afternoon Lily decides she has had enough with T. Ray and it was time for her to leave.
The author shows that Lily had it up to here with her father and knew that she deserved better than
she was being treated and was ready to persevere through more obstacles in the future. Another
character that shows great perseverance throughout the novel is August Boatwright. August is a
middle–aged African American woman who lives in Tiburon, South Carolina with her sisters May

giving up her independence. Lily explains, after knowing August for some time, "all I could think

Native American Beliefs And Beliefs
Native American Religions and Cultures in the Midwest

Native American religions in the Midwest shaped the way for their tribes to grow their religions

The history and lore of the Sioux tribes religion are quite interesting. They had massive birds called
Thunder birds they came down when there was or right before a storm and would swoop up small
children and animals; Or there was the White Buffalo Woman who gave each tribe a medicine pipe
that allowed the medicine man that was the tribe's head religious figure communicate with spirits for

The Causes Of The Dust Bowl
The Dust Bowl
It started off as a normal day for the Johnson boys, They woke up, ate breakfast and headed off to
the fields to start their chores. Their chores included feeding and tending the livestock and taking
care of the crops. There were two boys, Rick and Morty the youngest son, Morty loved feeding the
cows and sheep his favorite was a calf named Chad. Chad and Morty have been best friends ever
since Chad was born. When Morty was feeding Chad he looked over and saw a cloud of dust that
ranged for miles. He yelled at his brother to look and together they put away all the livestock and
went inside for shelter. Four hours goes by and the storm finally passes. The two boys go outside to
see that everything has been covered in dust. They run to the barn and see that all their livestock had
died from dust suffocation. Rick and Morty go in a panic everything they worked hard for was gone.
They had no other choice but to migrate to try and find a job so they can survive. So the next day
they packed everything they could carry and got the next ticket to California. This was very usual
for the farmers in the midwest to do this. The Dust Bowl affected people's way of life in the
Midwest forcing them to migrate to California in search of a job and food.
For years the Dust Bowl traveled the southern plains making the everyday activities not so simple.

Film Techniques In The Film 'War Of The Worlds'
How does the director Steven Spielberg, use film techniques to convey one or more themes in his
film, War of the Worlds?
Steven Spielberg utilizes many techniques, in his film, War of the Worlds, including camera work,
actors and sound effects to convey various themes such as family relationships. An initial scene,
'Eve of the War', establishes the relationships amongst the family especially around the central
character Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) which are built upon in 'Coming of the Invaders'. 'Worst of Man'
is a turning point in the story where Ray's character is developed to reveal the love for his children.
In 'The Fight Begins', Spielberg uses sound–effects to convey the development in Robbie's

'Worst of Man' is essentially a turning point in the story where the audience witnesses Ray's love for
his children. Robbie wears his cap backwards. Spielberg uses this symbolism to show Robbie's
youth and rebellion against his father. The director uses sound effects to establish the danger at the
war zone where the military is attempting to fight off the alien. After Ray hands the car over to
Robbie, he wears his cap correctly because he is given adult–like responsibilities. Not only that, but
Ray trusts Robbie which shows how the theme of family relationships develops. Later in the scene,
Robbie hands the car over to Ray as they approach a mob of people showing that he still relies on
his him and this demonstrates the change in their relationship. This also is supported because for the
first time in the film Robbie calls Ray "dad". When the crowd is still attacking Robbie and his
father, Ray gets attention with his gun. He asks "Where is my son?" and when their car is almost
lost, Ray wants "the daughter not the car". Both of these examples of dialogue in the scene and his
actions shows how their relationship is changing and to what extent he will go to save the lives of
his children. In a later scene, 'The Fight Begins', Spielberg uses sound effects and dialogue to show
the trust and belief between Robbie and Ray. Distant sounds of machine guns and bombs convey the

Persuasive Speech On Apprenticeships Pros And Cons
Hello from western North Dakota. I hope this un–seasonably warm fall has found everyone in good
spirits, and that we don't wind up paying for it down the road. I haven't seen any frost teeth out there
yet, so I consider that a good sign!
I hope everyone has been paying attention to the recent boost in emphasis on education in North
Dakota, because in it may exist the ability to help foster interest in our apprenticeships, and
ultimately an increased interest in hiring our employers. Both of those, certainly are big positives.
Fueled by a large, bipartisan Congressional effort, the US Department of Labor awarded a $200,000
apprenticeship grant to North Dakota Job Service in early June. Following that award over the
summer, the North Dakota Department of Commerce hosted a series of "apprenticeship accelerator"
meetings around the state, in an effort to increase the amount of registered apprenticeships. In
cooperation with the Dept. of Labor, representatives of the ND Department of Commerce and ND
Job Service distributed specific instructions and maintain an open link on their websites, in an effort
to help private employers develop their own apprenticeship programs. While it would certainly be a
good thing if the general public became aware, and hopefully accepting, of the benefits that
apprenticeships can provide, this recent fanfare may only serve to obscure the differences between
"registered" and "joint" programs. I believe that we may be able to capitalize on

Why Do John Lennon Kill People

it simply because of how much John Lennon was worth?
Is it really necessary to kill someone because they mentioned some Political and religion quotes?
This fan must have really got offended by what John Lennon has mentioned. For example the author

Sioux Genocide Case Study

  • 1. Sioux Genocide Case Study The Sioux people have been living in the Black Hills for over a thousand years they have been living peacefully until there was gold founded in the black hills causing the Sioux to lose their home and put on a reservation where they still face problems. Today they face the same problems with poverty, police brutality, and theft of their land to make it worse the Government is putting a dangerous oil pipeline that can destroy the reservation. The Sioux people a tribe that went through so much in the past that even to this day they are still fighting for their rights, they have already been kicked out of their homeland and put in to a reservation. The government is building a new pipeline by the reservation that the Sioux people are protesting for it to be removed because there is a chance where the pipeline can spill. Even if they protest, the government would not listen to them because of their skin color if they were white it would have been a different story something like that did happen because before it was move by the reservation it was in North Dakota and as it was being put in the landowners started to complain. ... • 3. Summary :'sitting Bull ' Tatanka Iyotanku more commonly known as Sitting Bull was born around 1831 in what is now known as South Dakota. He lived a life that many people would despise and attempt to get away from. Sitting Bull is one of the most recognizable and important Native American's in history and he was known for his bravery and standing up for what he believed in. He led his people in multiple battles and did all he could to give them the rights they deserved. Sitting Bull's parents were Tatanka Iyotanku, Sitting Bull, who was a Hunkpapa Lakota chief, and Her Holy Door. Sitting Bull had at least four wives over the years. His first two wives died early in his life. He had many children but he favored two of them. His favorite son was named Crow Foot and his daughter was named Standing Holy. Sitting Bull looked up to his father, Tatanka Iyotanku, and wanted to become a warrior. Unfortunately for Sitting Bull he showed very little talent when it came to warfare, he was called "Slow" due to his lack of skills. Even though he was portrayed as being slow he was still extremely brave and courageous. Sitting Bull was still reamed as being slow until he killed his first buffalo at the age of ten on a hunt with his father. Sitting Bull was previously known as Jumping Badger until the age of fourteen when he first went to battle. It is said that Jumping Badger used his coup stick to strike his first Crow warrior, his father became so happy that he gave him his name Sitting Bull. Natives during ... • 5. Pipeline Essay On October 17, I attended a presentation at the 28th annual "Consider the Century" forum. During my time there, I took part in learning about and discussing what is going on at Standing Rock. We first watched a news video about what is happening at Standing Rock and then we had a discussion about what we learned and what we think motivates each side to either promote or protest the pipeline. Before this presentation, I had heard about the pipeline being planned to be put on the Standing Rock Reservation, but I did not know much after that. Through this discussion, I learned so much more. The Dakota Access Pipeline is being built by Energy Transfer Partners in order to transport oil from northwest North Dakota to southern Illinois. The pipeline ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Religion is a key part of the lives of Sioux people. They believe everything has a spirit, therefore, their land has a spirit that should not be broken. The Sioux people have lived off of the land through the vegetation and hunting game. By bulldozing and violating their land, the government is tearing apart their lives and their spirits. The land and the spirits are incredibly sacred that when death comes, the spirits are allowed to go on to a spirit world. During death, the tribe members mourn the deceased heavily and bury them in the earth, under rocks or trees, and sometimes leave them out in the case of fallen warriors. Along with the bodies being sacred, the deceased's belongings are also sacred and are usually buried with the body to help their journey to the spirit world. Many government officials are unaware of the practices of the Sioux people. This ignorance leads to the belief that since we do not know it is wrong, it is not wrong. As a result, the construction and digging up of land is ruining the burial sites of Sioux people from hundreds of years ago. After this forum and searching for more knowledge about the pipeline construction through the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, I understand more clearly the importance that the land is to the people who inhabited ... My tribe lives in the plains of Northern America, we lived in the states now known as Montana and Wyoming, but we just called it home. My family was like all the others in the Cheyenne tribe, me being one of two children, living in earthen lodges, the women farming, the men hunting. • 9. Native American Pipeline Research Paper It is widely known that for centuries Native Americans have been oppressed, used and discriminated against. A sort of hatred towards our government and our people transpires among the Natives, and rightfully so. There are many reasons for the Natives to feel exploited, yet protesting the pipeline and fighting back to the American political system can give Natives a feeling of triumph and accomplishment if they are able to successfully halt the construction of the pipeline. Murdoch specifically states that "the last time Native Americans gathered and the nation notices was in 1973" therefore we know that the building of this pipeline is very strongly opposed and quite important to the Natives. • 11. Literary Themes In The Film Open Range The film Open Range shares similarities with the literary pieces that have been read, as well as the primary source given. In the film, as Boss, Charlie, and Buttons go back to the town after Mouse doesn't join them again, they find him abused by the ranchers. When they go and confront the marshall, they find him to be fraudulent. The primary source and the readings had the common theme of white male corruption. The ranchers and the marshalls were abusive and felt as they were entitled to power. That attitude and sense of entitlement lead to the destruction of the relationship between natives and Americans. Another correspondence is the way those men govern their people. In The Fight of Nez Perces, the "governor could not comprehend such an attitude. He urged Old Joseph to sign the treaty and receive presents of blankets."(317)The governor had used manipulation tactics to receive what he wanted. The men in the film governed similarly. They were physically abusive and and instill fear in their people. Lastly, although the not same, is the will people to defend their way of life. In The Flight of the Nez Perces, Old Joseph had refused to sign the governor treaties multiple times. He had certain beliefs for example, "no man owned any part of the earth, and a man could not sell what he did not own," when the governo wanted their land. Old Joseph stuck to his beliefs and fought for what he considered to be right. Similarly, in the film, Boss and Charlie, fight and defend the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. North Dakota Pipeline Analysis In North Dakota, oil is a great source of revenue. Since the oil boom, transporting that oil has been done through pipelines as well as rail cars. Recently, the Dakota Access pipeline has attracted attention from celebrities and other civilians that are not even residents of the Dakotas, such as Shailene Woodley, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jane Fonda, and Mark Ruffalo. Pipelines can be both efficient and dangerous. The efficiency can be read in the ability to transport the oil to other states, while the danger can be read in the environmental damage of an oil spill in a river that people depend on for water––in the case the Dakota Access pipeline could damage the Missouri River. No matter all the perks of a pipeline such as Dakota Access, it can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those for the pipeline say that it will help the economy, and that it will be much safer than transporting crude oil through rail cars. North Dakota oil producers will also get more revenue as a result. However, those against the pipeline say that even though it may be swell for the economy, it will not be swell for the environment. The gases that will be released from burning those gases from cars and other sources will help advance climate change, and is ultimately bad for the environment. If the United States just went to completely renewable energy, we could slow down the process. Also, it was planned that the pipeline be built and crossing under the Missouri River, which is the main water source for millions of people. Native Americans of the area––Sioux mainly––also have sacred grounds through where the pipeline was supposed to go through. The land was technically theirs in the treaty from the 1800s, but through deceit over the years, it has been taken from them. If the pipeline needs to be built, then it needs to be rerouted in order to protect the rights and environment of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Badlands And Lakota Land When the Sioux migrated to the Great Plains area, they most certainly came across the the Badlands in their discovery. The name "Badlands" is derived from the Lakota phrase makȟóšiča, meaning Land of Bad Spirits. Today, some Lakota believe that the Badlands are a place to be avoided because it is where bad spirits exist. This paper will discuss the geographic location, geological formation, Lakota legends, reasons the site is visited, time or seasons to visit and Lakota stargazing associated with the site. When applicable, Lakota words will be provided. Geographic Location and Geology The Badlands are geographically located in Southwest South Dakota, the Southern Unit being within the Pine Ridge Reservation. The Oglala Lakota Nation co–manages the Southern Unit of Badlands National Park. The Badlands were deposited in layers over millions of years. The layers are constructed of sediments such as sand, silt, and clay that have been cemented together into sedimentary rocks. Different environments caused different sediments to accumulate there at different times. The oldest formations are at the bottom and the youngest are at the top. The black Pierre Shale is the bottom layer of the Badlands and was deposited between 69 and 75 million years ago when a shallow sea stretched across what is now the Great Plains. Sediment filtered through the seawater, forming a black mud on the sea floor that has since hardened into shale. Fossil clams, ammonites, and sea reptiles are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The legal issue involved in this case is the piracy of music from various artists that is easily accesible to everybody from the website called "Napster". The moral issue in this case is the music being stolen according to the music companies or the music was just being borrowed by people all over the internet according to Napster supporters. The difference between the two is the legal issue is based on actual evidence like there is a law imposed about this case while the moral issue is based on strong likelihood or firm conviction. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 4.Ofcourse, music companies share a moral responsibility for what has happened. The main goal of this music companies is their profit from the music that they produce but it seems that they don't see any benefit from this happening. Many people would prefer to spend their money on something else instead of purchasing pricey music unless they are fans. Fans won't exist if the artist weren't popular and artists wouldn't be popular if there were no fans. There is no difference at all for a fan who bought an album of an artist and a fan who downloaded the artist music in the internet. Both are still fans who made the artist known. Technology like Napster did change the music industry both in a good way and a bad way. Let's face it, nothing in this world is perfectly good or perfectly bad. Everything has its own bad and good side. Good because like what I just said, people who are thrifty or cautious of purchasing music may have a option to download it and listen to it for free and in this way, it is easily shared to anybody unlike physical albums. Not everybody visits the music store frequently. It's bad side is it is very accessible to everybody like some music may contain harsh words which may influence the youth who downloads the music from the website and also physical album sales ... • 21. Napster: The Devil in Disguise In the year of 1999 sound recordings were changed to a whole new world. Sound recordings stepped into new hands known as Napster. Napster, to other sound recording companies, was like the devil in disguise, ruining the sound recordings profits and business. Napster started something for consumers but soon came to an end. What is Napster? According to SearchCIO, Napster is a controversial application that allows people to share music over the Internet without having to purchase their own copy on CD. Not only that, Napster allowed people to download the music on to their own CD and could be played from their own server and use chatting forums. (Rouse) Napster was created by a college dropout named Shawn Fanning and one of his friends who was only nineteen. He became quickly popular on college campuses. Some colleges were banning Napster due to the high bandwidth demands. (Rouse) By the year of 2000, Napster had already had over 26 million users. Basically, according to The Observer Napster was programmed to go into someone else's music files and choose the songs they wanted and download them on to their computer, which also known as peer–to peer or file is sharing. (Lamont) Napster may have been popular with free lancers but not with other sound recording companies. • 23. Mark David Chapman Murder Many could ask the question how a novel could lead someone to commit a murder. In the 1980's this question swept through many individuals around the world. "Read The Catcher in the Rye, that is my statement." These are words that came from Mark David Chapman after he took the life of Rock and Roll songwriter/singer, John Lennon. A&E produced a documentary about Chapman, the murderer of Lennon. It spoke about how and when Lennon was executed, the reasoning behind why Chapman did it, the childhood of Chapman, and other interesting facts that related to this tragic event. The way that A&E sequenced the events, helps the viewers to have a better understanding of what was going through Chapman's head during, before, and after the murder was conducted. ... Although Chapman was thought of as a "normal" boy, considering his IQ test score was above average, he was not normal. Within the first two years of high school, Chapman got into drugs. He was constantly skipping school. He was bullied because he was not a good athlete. Since he was bullied so much and did not have friends, he counted on imaginary people in the walls for entertainment. • 25. The Purpose And Importance Of Monuments Monuments are used to memorialize and honor moments, individuals and events of the past. Some monuments do this better than other monuments. In creating a monument there are three essential factors a group or agency should consider to make the monument as effective as possible: location, design features, purpose and backstory. Why these factors? Location and design factors play a massive role in the reception the monument will receive, based on its environment, size and looks a monument will be perceived differently. The purpose and backstory are the two single most important factors to consider in creating a monument. The monuments history, its reason, is the reason just? Is the purpose proper? Does it accurately memorialize the subject? All these questions come with the purpose and backstory of a monument. Location; where the monument is plays a big role in how effective a monument is in memorializing or honoring a person or moment. For instance Mount Rushmore, to the untrained eye, is four important men of the past on the side of a mountain, but it is actually quite more. "I have to admit: Mount Rushmore bothers me. It was bad enough that white men drove the Sioux from the hills they still hold sacred; did they have to carve faces all over them too?"(Source C). Source C is saying that the location of Mount Rushmore is disrespectful to the Sioux because that mountain is sacred to them, and the people who drove the Native Americans off the land have their faces on that ... • 29. Native American Themes In Louise Erdrich's 'Antelope Wife' Louise Erdrich is a Native American author from Little Falls, Minnesota. Her mother is a Chippewa Indian and her father is German American. Through her writing, she demonstrates native ideas and culture. Native American themes are often present in her works. She shines a light on both perspectives of her background. Some of her works mention reservations in Minnesota and North Dakota which connects to her birthplace and where she grew up. Erdrich did not really look into her native heritage until she went to Dartmouth and they had just opened the Native American department. She delved more into the subject and started to use it in her writing. Erdrich gives readers, whether or not they are Native American or not, a look at Native American culture from the eyes of both natives and others in society. This theme is present in many of her works including: Antelope Wife and Future Home of a Living God. Antelope Wife is a short story by Louise Erdrich. Antelope Wife is about a Native American man belonging to the Chippewa tribe in Minnesota who is a teacher. One day he laid his eyes on four women: three daughters and their mother. He was determined to have the mother and he ends up kidnapping her. He gets her (the antelope) to fall in love with her, but he was warned by Jimmy Badger that these women are generally curse the men who go after them. Towards the end of the story, she becomes overweight and ugly and the man did not expect this to happen to him. There is already a connection to native culture in the title of this short story, 'Antelope'. Antelope is a spirit animal in the native heritage. Antelope symbolizes being on the movie and action oriented. "Deep in the fields of tall golden grasses in the desert the Antelope thrives, ever watchful and discerning ready to move in an instant. The Antelope perceives subtle body movements and signals from the other members of the herd. When danger is near they move as one, quickly and confidently with finesse and confidence, their maneuverability allows them to disappear into the vast expanse of wilderness with no more than a moments notice." (Universe of Symbolism, Antelope). This symbolism is referred to towards the end of the poem by Jimmy Badger. "If you see one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Grievances, mourning, and anger are human emotions, but could these three emotions be used to describe the natural world of Mother Nature? In 1984, award–winning author Louise Erdrick of French Chippewa descent used personification, imagery, and a theme of unrest for the Native American people and spirit to craft "I Was Sleeping Where the Black Oaks Move." Louise Erdrich was born in Little Falls, Minnesota, and raised in Wahpeton, North Dakota by her mother, a Chippewa, and father, a German. The daughter of two Wahpeton Indian School teachers and the granddaughter of the tribal chair for the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation, Erdrich was bathed in the culture, life, myth, of the reservation and Native American culture. In 1976, Erdrich received her bachelor's degree from Dartmouth and soon moved back to North Dakota to pursue teaching. However, two years later Erdrich received a fellowship to teach composition and creative writing at Johns Hopkins University where she completed her Master's degree a year later. Upon the completion of her fellowship, Erdrich moved to Boston and became the editor of the Boston Indian Council newspaper, The Circle. Furthermore, Erdrich published several critically claimed works including Jacklight a collection of poetry which included "I Was Sleeping Where the Black Oaks Move" () Erdrick's poem breathes life to a growing river whose strong currents ... After many battles against rival tribes such as Assiniboins, Crows, Flatheads, and Blackfeet, Sitting Bull was chosen to be the tribal war chief in 1857. Starting in 1863, 6 years after Sitting Bull became war chief, the United States military began to invade Lakota territory. The reason for the invasion was retaliation for the Santee Rebellion, which occurred in Minnesota, however Sitting Bull's people had no involvement. Sitting Bull fought against this first wave of invaders, only to have to fight them again a year later in the Battle of Killdeer Mountain. After another year had passed, Sitting Bulls decided to lay siege to Fort Rice that had recently been constructed in what is now modern day North Dakota. • 43. Nevada Access Pipeline Is Running The Headlines Introduction Recently Dakota Access pipeline is running the headlines. Native American tribes and their partners, drove by the Standing Rock Sioux, have been challenging the Dakota Access pipeline, a venture that would transport oil from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota and Montana over the Plains to Illinois. The nonconformists, numbering in the thousands and including individuals from several distinct tribes, contend that finishing the pipeline would profane hereditary grounds, undermine the water supply, and unjustifiably trouble the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, which is probably not going to profit by any financial advancement that goes with the venture. Energy Transfer Partners, the enterprise behind the pipeline, recommends the venture will prompt to more noteworthy monetary advancement and expanded security and productivity contrasted with the trains that presently convey Bakken unrefined petroleum (Harris and Gonchar, 2016). Basically in the entire issue there are many stakeholders but two parties are main. First, Energy Transfer Partners and second, Native American tribes. Both the parties have their requirements and BATNA on the pipeline dispute (Harris & Gonchar, 2016). • 45. Function Of A Hero In 'Drummer Boy Of Shiloh'? On Sept. 19, 2001, 17–year–old Ryan Harris entered Stevens High School in Rapid City, South Dakota, walked into a Science class, demanded that the teacher leave, and held 15 of his fellow students, including Johnny, hostage with a Shotgun and a pistol. For 2 hours, the students cowered, while the young man blared demands for pizza, $1 million dollars, and a helicopter getaway over the public address system. He shot at the chalkboard, the ceiling, and the window, making it clear that he had plenty of ammo and that he would leave no survivors. But then, for one moment, Harris put his gun down and Johnny lunged for it. Harris, realizing his mistake, jumped at the shotgun too, and the pair struggled for control. Johnny, however, won the fight, and the gunman was overpowered (The teen who saved his South Dakota school from a Columbine–like tragedy 4). The function of a hero is to be selfless, needs to be an example of a strong leader and is not someone who is unwilling to help. In the poem "Drummer boy of Shiloh" by Ray Bradbury the drummer boy leads his men by playing a drum beat (Bradburry 16–20). "You are the heart of the army. Think of that. You're the heart of the army. Listen, now"(Bradburry 19). This is a big part of a hero because the 12 year old drummer boy was selfless to play the beats for the army, and the army was counting on him to do the right thing. That demonstrates selflessness even though he was scared he still did the drumming for the greater good. A hero ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Peace Like A River Analysis Peace Like a River is a strong story due to its elaborate and engaging characters, artistic aspect, and its suggestions and belief on faith. Without the faith of God, the Land family would not have had the loyalty to each other nor made the sacrifices they did for one another. Letting God be the guide and savior in their lives, the family would have never found the missing links to complete their family. The sacrifices and loyalty the family has, brought them closer together as one. I felt from the beginning that Reuben Land, even as a young child, Reuben was unsure of his faith and the miracles of God. But, he is often the only person that witnesses his father's miracles. "The fact is, the miracles that flowed from my father's fingertips had few witnesses but me. Yes, enough people saw enough strange things that Dad became the subject of a kind of misspoken folklore in our town, but most ignored the miracles as they ignored Dad himself" (3–4). Reuben often looks as his dad as a hero and recounts the early miracles by saying, "I now think of my survival as my father's first miracle" (5), "the second, I suppose, is that the doctor turned out wrong about the brain damage" (5), "Dad's third miracle–and one of the most startling, if not consequential– happened in the middle of the night, in the middle of North Dakota, just after I turned 11" (5). The third miracle is referring to the night of a hunting trip when Reuben killed his first kill. He talks about the bird just hovering above him. I feel that if anyone has any question regarding faith and miracles, then that particular person needs to read this novel. It has made me more spiritual that I already am. I really enjoyed the writer's style of writing in this novel. The narration is written in the first person, which I enjoy. He starts out the story saying, "From my first breath in this world, all I wanted was a good set of lungs and the air to fill them" (1) and "when I was born to Helen and Jeremiah Land" (1). The first setting is a small town in Minnesota, which is where the book was written. The second setting is in the Badlands of North Dakota, "we are headed for the Badlands. Black Mary, for example, is a mother figure to many people in the novel, "The Secret Life of Bees," by Sue Monk Kidd. The Secret Life of Bees was set in 1965. The novel, written by Sue Monk Kidd, mostly talks about a coming of age process with the main character, Lily Owens as she grows up. She learns about the love, family, and Black Mary. Black Mary is a major piece to the novel for she is one of the reasons that Lily developed as a person so much. The use of Black Mary as a symbol helps readers understand the novel's overall theme, which is "people can have family even though they are not related by blood." The symbol, Black Mary is significant to the novel as a whole since she gives people comfort and strength. In the novel, The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd, August told Lily a story about how Black Mary will stand in for someone until they come back when she said, "'Do you remember the nun Beatrix, who ran away?' 'What do you mean?' the sister said. 'The nun Beatrix didn't run away. Why there she is over near the altar, sweeping.' Well, you can imagine how this floored the real Beatrix. • 55. The Secret Life Of Bees Analysis The Secret Life Of Bees The secret life of bees was written by author Sue Monk Kidd and was set in South Carolina 1964. Kidd creatively uses bee insects as an unhuman like object to express and symbolize the certain aspects and ways of life throughout the novel. Specifically, in this novel the bees act as models of human society. Sue Monk Kidd presents themes and ideas through the eyes of the character Lily, who is 14 years old in the novel. These ideas are related to having a sense of belonging and also Kidd uses Lily to represent the European's opinions on the African–Americans and how people can change for the better, as this novel was set in 1964, a significant time in society for the African– American race involving the Civil Rights Act. The novel gives us a certainty of realism by reliving what happened in those times through a character we can relate to, because she is trying to find herself, and I personally think all of us in society are still trying to find ourselves every day, working on a better version of yourself. In the novel 'The secret life of bees', the author Sue Monk Kidd aesthetically chooses bees as symbolism to act as models of human society. Kidd sparks the idea of realism within the reader and makes us as readers feel like we are living the story as the character Lily through the lessons she is taught that we were also taught. Lily catches a bee in a jar and then not long after she decides to open the lid to let the bee free, although she does this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Evaluation Of Teaching And Advising Essay Statement on Approach to Teaching and Advising Much has evolved since my initial years at South Dakota State University when I had no teaching appointment. During those initial years I took advantage of any available opportunity to increase my college level teaching experience mostly in the form of guest lectures in ABS 704 and other courses where I lectured on Plant Functional Genomics and Abiotic Stresses. Based on this experience, I developed Independent Study opportunities for interested students in wheat molecular breeding and in plant genomics. Interest in this area was strong enough that I expanded it into a regular course and offered it as a special topic ("Introduction to Plant Genomics") starting in the fall of 2009. Those early years afforded me time and opportunities to informally interact with diverse faculty to keep maturing my teaching philosophy and approaches. Although most of my teaching in the last years is at the graduate level, I have a special consideration for ABS482–582, an international experience to discover the agricultural industry in Argentina. In 2007, I was part of the team that developed this course. Unfortunately, due to an important health problem in my family I was not able to attend the first trip. Steven Spielberg utilizes many techniques, in his film, War of the Worlds, including camera work, actors and sound effects to convey various themes such as family relationships. An initial scene, 'Eve of the War', establishes the relationships amongst the family especially around the central character Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) which are built upon in 'Coming of the Invaders'. 'Worst of Man' is essentially a turning point in the story where the audience witnesses Ray's love for his children. Robbie wears his cap backwards. Spielberg uses this symbolism to show Robbie's youth and rebellion against his father. The director uses sound effects to establish the danger at the war zone where the military is attempting to fight off the alien. After Ray hands the car over to Robbie, he wears his cap correctly because he is given adult–like responsibilities. Not only that, but Ray trusts Robbie which shows how the theme of family relationships develops. Later in the scene, Robbie hands the car over to Ray as they approach a mob of people showing that he still relies on his him and this demonstrates the change in their relationship. This also is supported because for the first time in the film Robbie calls Ray "dad". When the crowd is still attacking Robbie and his father, Ray gets attention with his gun. He asks "Where is my son?" and when their car is almost lost, Ray wants "the daughter not the car". Both of these examples of dialogue in the scene and his actions shows how their relationship is changing and to what extent he will go to save the lives of his children. Moreover, the pipeline has positive effects on transverse areas. Then, why Seattle would reject the pipeline project. We will know why if we investigate more deeply about DAPL project. The project has the potential to harm In the article Dakota Access ' Commitment to Safety, Energy Transfer company, the owner of Dakota Access Pipeline project, claims that it will do its best to guarantee the safety of the pipeline. For sure, that is what Energy Transfer will do. However, how long will it do? What if Energy Transfer company is gone? Contract and treaty could be broken overnight. Business could fail at any time. But we will live on the earth from generation to generation. If the company closed down one day, who would guarantee our or later generation's safety? There two examples of oil pipeline leak. • 73. Persuasive Speech On Apprenticeships Pros And Cons Hello from western North Dakota. I hope this un–seasonably warm fall has found everyone in good spirits, and that we don't wind up paying for it down the road. I haven't seen any frost teeth out there yet, so I consider that a good sign! I hope everyone has been paying attention to the recent boost in emphasis on education in North Dakota, because in it may exist the ability to help foster interest in our apprenticeships, and ultimately an increased interest in hiring our employers. Both of those, certainly are big positives. Fueled by a large, bipartisan Congressional effort, the US Department of Labor awarded a $200,000 apprenticeship grant to North Dakota Job Service in early June. Following that award over the summer, the North Dakota Department of Commerce hosted a series of "apprenticeship accelerator" meetings around the state, in an effort to increase the amount of registered apprenticeships. In cooperation with the Dept. of Labor, representatives of the ND Department of Commerce and ND Job Service distributed specific instructions and maintain an open link on their websites, in an effort to help private employers develop their own apprenticeship programs. While it would certainly be a good thing if the general public became aware, and hopefully accepting, of the benefits that apprenticeships can provide, this recent fanfare may only serve to obscure the differences between "registered" and "joint" programs. I believe that we may be able to capitalize on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Why Do John Lennon Kill People Does murdering someone you admire really makes you famous by killing them? Well this one obsessed fan assassinated John Lennon On December 8, 1980. Shot him several times and unfortunately John Lennon did not make it. DId the fan shoot John Lennon because of his Political and religious beliefs or because he was an Inspiration Founding artist member of the Beatles or was it simply because of how much John Lennon was worth? Is it really necessary to kill someone because they mentioned some Political and religion quotes? This fan must have really got offended by what John Lennon has mentioned. For example the author states, " Christianity will. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue with that; I'm right and will be proved right. Were more popular than Jesus right; I don't know which will go first rock and roll or Christianity"(page 1). John had mentioned in his tweets. To put your religion ... • 77. The Last Report On The Miracles By Louise Erdrich Summary Louise Erdrich Louise Erdrich was born on June 7, 1954 in Little Falls, Minnesota. She grew up in Wahpeton North Dakota near Turtle Mountain reservation, where her grandfather Pat Tourneau was a Tribal chairman. Erdrich uses characters not only to demonstrate the experiences of Native Americans, but also the heartache and pain she has gone through in her life. Erdrich's family was far from normal, they faced many obstacles, but unfortunately they were not able to overcome them. "In 1981 she married Michael Dorris, a professor of anthropology and head of the Native American studies program at Dartmouth" (Andrews, McCarthy). Louise met Michael upon her return to Dartmouth as a writer. Although Louise and Michael did not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Hauled halfway across Minnesota from Little Rock brickwoods pious drivers, they still held the peculiar sulfurous moth gold of the clay outside the town" (Erdrich). This setting was a one of many that Erdrich remembered from Minnesota. At the beginning of the book The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse Erdrich introduces the readers to one of many examples of alcoholism. "Then six grasshopper years occurred during which even the handles on the hoes and rakes were eaten and a U.S. cavalry soldier, too , partially devoured while he lay drunk in the insects' path" (Erdrich). Erdrich uses a character in her book that seems to be in pain due to her circumstances. "It was as though her soul were neatly removed by a drinking straw and siphoned into the green pool of quiet that lay beneath the rippling cascade of notes" (Erdrich). This character also seems resolute to use music as a way to cope with her emotions, just as Louise uses writing as a way to share her stories and escape the reality of life sometimes. "At the piano keyboard, absorbed into the notes that rose beneath her hands, she existed in her essence" (Erdrich). The character felt as though she meant something while playing the piano. Even when things were going wrong her escape was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
