Drug Assistance Programs
Drugs administered in a physician's office and certain cancer drugs are covered by the Medicare
Plan B. more than 60% of the new cancer diagnosis occur among the elderly hence chemotherapy
and oncology drugs are covered in Medicare Part B. States effort to provide coverage for seniors
Having recognized the financial burden of the elderly due to high prices of prescription drugs, many
states have responded by creating programs to help in drug coverage for seniors. In the past few
years, the states have increased their expenditures to cater for senior drug programs. Majority of the
states have drug assistance programs for the elderly. The states have devised ways to cater for these
new developments. For example in Pennsylvania its PACE program ... Show more content on

The assistance program was entirely funded by the state's revenue. Low–income seniors in the state
of Illinois can now access any drug covered by the Medicaid with copayments and other cost
sharing programs. States offering Subsidies for private coverage Proponents of subsidies for private
coverage have always argued that the best solution to the seniors' coverage of prescription drugs is
helping the seniors to have private coverages by making it more affordable through subsidies. In
1999, Nevada tried this approach, although it was faced by myriad of problems in its
implementation making the legislation to be changed two years later. The state offers subsidies to
the tune of 100% of the drug coverage premium to the eligible seniors. Coordination of
manufacturers program Drug manufacturers offer free drugs to the needy who cannot afford their
drugs. Patients have to work with the doctors to submit a letter or an application with supporting
documents to give evidence of both financial and medical needs. The process is complicated for
low–income seniors who take different drugs from different manufacturers. Every manufacturer has
their own way of application process this makes it even more difficult for needy patients to

Key Points
With Marcella being in a hit in run and her with the both of them serving a tragic incident which has
continued from that day forth. Marcella was paralyzed from the chest down. Dave and Marcella did
not have health insurance. This incident caused the family into the tangled web of means–tested
social assistance. The writer even believed she knew much about means–tested assistance program.
As the writer learned that these programs are really not benefiting people they are actually affecting
the lives of many people who are depending on these programs. Marcella and Dave had to make a
drastic change in their life by spending down their assets and drop their income to near poverty level
to receive the help they need due to the American Safety net which is a program to assist with the
poor. Marcella and her family will have to continue to live with these restrictions for the rest of their
lives unable to save for retirement, use tax free college saving for the baby and unable to develop an
emergency fund. They will not be able to enjoy life as a middle class family. In my belief the writer
wanted to show that many people are going through this tragic and the prevalence of low–income
work and unequal access to education have generated vast–and growing–economic inequality.
The experience that Dave and Marcella ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

attention. The uninsured that are approximately 50 million people nationally are therefore

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
Purpose of Program In regards to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the
purpose of the organization could be described as insuring that eligible, low–income individuals and
families have access to nutritional and economic benefits. According to the United Stated
Department of Agriculture, SNAP is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net (USDA,
2016). The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) assists state agencies, nutrition educators,
neighborhood, and faith–based organizations to ensure that those deemed eligible for nutritional
assistance are able to make informed decisions in regards to applying for the program and are able
to access benefits. The FNS also works with state partners and the retail community ... Show more

During the Reagan administration, the Food Stamps Program would suffer severe budget cuts in the
year 1981 but was later restored funding in 1988 and 1990 as a means to combat the hunger crisis in
America. This led to the accessibility of the EBT card. In the 2008 Farm Bill, the Food Stamp
Program would be renamed the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or "SNAP" for short.
During the year 2011, the program would become recognized as the largest federal food assistance
program in the country, serving 14% of the population (more than 45 million American citizens). On
the 7th day of February, 2014, President Barack Obama would sign into law the 2014 Farm Bill,
which is also referred to as the Agricultural Act of 2014. In April, 2015 the USDA awarded $31.5
million in funding to local, state, and national organizations to support programs that help
participants in SNAP increase their purchase of fruits and vegetables. Philosophical Base of
Program When attempting to determine whether SNAP is residual or institutional, one must first be
able to differentiate between the two. Residual Social Work is defined as either "reactive" or "gap–
filling". This sort of approach deals with needs as they come and attends to those that can't be
addressed by any other societal means. On the other hand, Institutional Social Work takes an

Food Assistance Programs For Food Aid Programs
As expressed by Wellman et al. (2002), "older adults will double to some 70 million in 2030,
reflecting an increase from 12.4% today to 20% of the US population in 2030." As a result of this
data an increase in societal level food interventions are important to implement to meet the
nutritional needs of the elderly. Food assistance programs can be a solution to address this problem.
The importance of elders of having the appropriate foods for health and the struggles they have in
acquiring these foods suggests that elderly food assistance programs might develop better ways of
helping them obtained such foods (Wolfe et al., 2003). Food assistance program that exist currently
is the Food Stamp Program. This program provides benefits that can be used to purchase specific
foods. The eligibility for benefits is determined on the basis of household income and assets. All age
groups can receive benefits, but special rules for households with elderly members have been
established (Guthrie & Lin, 2002).
Commodity Supplemental Food Program is another food distribution program that currently
operates in 23 states, in the District of Columbia, and on two Indian reservations (Guthrie & Lin,
2002). The eligible requirement for elderly is that they must have a household income at or below
130% of federal poverty guidelines (Guthrie & Lin, 2002). The last societal program is the Child
and Adult Care Food Program, which provides meal and snack reimbursements to nonresidential
daycare

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a program that helps employees, and their family out in
their time of need. This program is free and confidential to its clients. They are there for support,
and any problem that may come for an employee at anytime of being hired with the company. In
addition, maybe recommendation could come from a supervisor that may see a need to send their
employees. EAP may also help supervisors with troubling conflict that arise in the workplace.
According to Mosley, Mosley, & Pietri, EAP is a program that provide counseling to its employees

Public Housing Assistance Programs
Ever since the New Deal, the Federal Government has been spending billions of dollars each year to
ensure that everyone has a roof over their head. Out of this effort eventually arose the Department of
Housing and Urban Development, which now administers three main public housing assistance
programs (Edson, 2011). Much literature providing an overview of housing vouchers distinguishes
between the different types of rental assistance, including project units, Section 8 project–based
assistance, and Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers. It is important to distinguish between tenant–
based assistance and rental–based assistance (HUD.Gov, 2017). In his paper, Olson differentiated

To do so, he utilized data from nineteen nationally representative studies, such as the National
Center for Education Statistics and the Long–Term Trend and Main National Assessment of
Educational Progress. Taking into account factors such as age and grade of students, as well as the
educational attainment of the parents, he provides differences in test scores between high and low–
income children, concluding that the educational achievement gap has widened in recent years
(Reardon, 2011). To demonstrate this gap numerically for the state of Iowa, the DailyHerald has
compiled a working database on the test–score differences, depending on the individual grade of the
child and income bracket of the child's family (Broderick, 2014). Additionally, sociologists Geoffrey
Wodtke and David Harding conducted a study to measure the high school graduation rate of high–
poverty, versus low–poverty children and found that the chances of finishing high–school are far
lower for children whose families are in the lowest income bracket than for more economically
privileged children (Wodtke & Elwert, 2011). Databases from The College Board reveal that this
gap in achievement also translates into SAT scores, and later acceptance into college. Individual
standardized test scores rise with the income of the student's parents (College Board, 2013). A study
conducted by the University of Pennsylvania went a step further to examine the college graduation

Hazard Mitigation Assistance Program: A Case Study
The city of Chattanooga TN, falls on the Tennessee River. There are few natural disasters that this
city has to face. Outside of household fires, flooding along the river is Chattanooga's greatest
concern. FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) Provides funding to help applicants,
in this case the Hamilton County Department of Emergency Services, develop activities needed for
projects that are geared towards building resiliency with flooding. Within the HMGP there are
programs to help with flood mitigation such at the Flood Map Assistance. If the applicant, in this
case the county, can put together a solid application that follows the application criteria, is complete
and accurate, and request funding that is within budget guidelines for the appropriate fiscal year,
then funding for mitigation activities is accessible.
Application Criteria
To be eligible for Hazard Mitigation assistance, the applicant must be an emergency management
agency or similar, belonging to one of the 50 states. Of course tribal governments, districts and other
recognized U.S. territories are eligible as well, but for this paper the focus is on the county ... Show

property is not determined to be a cost effective option for acquisition or relocation activities, then
property owners may receive a calculated expected savings to the National Flood Insurance Fund

unable to help themselves because of limited ability or income. These families need assistance to
continue their daily lives and contribute to our society. This assistance includes food stamps,
reduced and free school lunches, housing assistance, unemployment insurance, and Head Start. By
helping needy individuals, they are making an investment in a brighter future.
Many families depend on food stamps to provide daily nutrition for themselves and their children .

Food insecurity is a term that was introduced by the United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA). The USDA labels the insecurity based on the severity with four different groups. One
group is the Low Food Security; which means low quality, desirability or variety but no or little
reduction of food. Very Low Food Security is reduced food intake and multiple disruptions of eating
patterns. The opposite spectrum is High Food Security. This is no food limitations or no issues
accessing food. Marginal food security is sufficient supply of food with some concern of ability to
supply. (USDA, https://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/food–nutrition–assistance/food–security–in–the–

if I would be willing to take risks associated with the private practice area. The responsibility of
being solely liable for all financial matters, accounting, administrative work, and inconsistent
revenue streams is quite scary (Gladding & Newsome, 2018, p. 385). Currently, the setting that is

In the world where managed care organizations are pushing for counseling sessions to be short,
employee assistance programs seem like the right fit for short–term services, with three to eight
sessions being the norm. As an EAP counselor, it is essential for me to be assured of my ability to
protect my clients' confidentiality. I am aware of lines being blurred when counseling, for instance, a
boss and his/her employee. I should be able to assure both parties that the information shared during
our sessions will be held to the privacy standards required of counselor and client relationships.
Committing to professional behaviors such as maintaining a strictly professional relationship, being
an attentive listener, respecting cultural differences, and advocating for my clients. I would also be
trained in working with adults, as well as children and couples since EAP services sometimes

because a focus in EAP counseling is geared towards wellness. To become an EAP counselor, I
would need to participate in continuing education training, including substance abuse and addictions

Employee Assistance Programs
Implementing Employee Assistance Programs Introduction When the average employee hears the
words "employee assistance programs", he may immediately think of medical benefits. Another
employee may think of Workers Compensation. Yet another may think of further training for
possible advancement. Although all of their conceptions are true, they are not all inclusive. There
are several parts to the vehicle called Employee Assistance Programs, or EAPs. Employee
Assistance Programs are defined by Myers as "structured programs that utilize technical,
administrative, and professional human services and personnel people, on either a contractual or
employment basis, to meet the needs of troubled employees" (4). EAPs are needed so that the ...

Gus could be having financial problems resulting from his excessive drinking. He may be inclined
to take work materials from his job in order to do some things on the side, or even sell the
merchandise he stole for extra money. If Sharon is having problems with child care or home
responsibilities, her work performance may be significantly affected. Studies show that this type of
stress on a woman in the workforce contribute to the high rate of alcoholism among working women
(Myers 7). It is suspected that this stress contributes to higher rates of drug use as well. Also on the
list of troubles are gambling, legal problems, violence and mental illness. 80 to 100 million people
in the United States gamble regularly. Of that number, 6 percent ( six million people) have a
problem with compulsive gambling (Myers 6). Violence is a serious issue in the workplace. As
many as 20 workers a week are murdered (Cascio 589). On–the–job violence may be the effect of
any number of stressors on an employee who feels there is no other way to vent his frustration.
There could be any number of reasons, previously stated and otherwise, that might precipitate legal
problems also. Legal problems and gambling debts are two additional stressors that an otherwise
outstanding employee may have to tackle, causing him to be violent or in some other way troubled.
An employee may have other issues that may not be as obviously dangerous and alcoholism or
violence.

b) Preparation. Few programs cover an evaluation phase as part of the initial planning process and
more programs lack measurable goals and moto.
c) Standardization. The changes in models complicates the development of standardized, reliable
and valid measures in the program.
d) Data Collection. In many organizations available data is less than required for conducting a
meaningful evaluation. Confidentiality may limit access to data. The presence of a control group in
organization is important.
Conclusion
Many employees and employers who have experienced EAPs view them quite positively. Decision–
takers in the organization must be convinced that investing in EAPs leads to a win–win situation,
Organizational performance and enhancing employees wellbeing. While it will provide guidance for
personal problems, it will not remove problems like absenteeism, accidents or morale problems. The
major drawback of many EAPs is that they are geared towards microscopic intervention, after the
facts. Final conclusion seems to be evident: regardless of the approach chosen, regardless of the
scope and technology used, EAPs are in the market to

A Review Of Tanf Assistance Programs
A Review of the TANF Cash Assistance Programs
Roughly 20% of the United States' children are living in families suffering from poverty (National
Center for Education Statistics, 2015). According to Yeung, Linver and Brooks–Gunn (2002);
Pungello et al., (2010); and Evans (2004), economic hardships increase the likelihood of
"maladaptive" behaviors while decreasing school performance and poor cognitive–behavioral
development. (1861–1879; 410–426; 77–92). To prevent this, lawmakers were spurred into creating
public policy to actively reduce the rate of childhood poverty along with associated risk factors as
well as foster economic independency in families apart from the welfare system.
The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Act, TANF, was created out of a block grant from
PRWORA. TANF replaced two programs: the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training program–
JOBS–and the Aid to Families with Dependent Children–AFDC–program that provided assistance
to mothers and children. Then president, Bill Clinton remarked that the creation of this act would "
[end] welfare as we know it" (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 2015). AFDC had been
criticized for providing assistance to non–working mothers and incentives for children out of
marriage. As such, program's design was tailored to fill the needs of poor families through cash
assistance so that they would be able to obtain "economic self–sufficiency" (Abt, 2001). The
program has four additional declared purposes: 1. to

Public Assistance For Welfare Programs
Many people in our country have turned to public assistance for help in our troubling economy.
Welfare programs in our country date back to the early 1900's. When these programs first started
they were set up to support those who genuinely needed it. Many of the people who use these
programs are hard working people who have had unfortunate things happen to them. However for
those who use government assistance for good there are those who take advantage of the programs.
Those who take advantage have turned to drugs and are unable or unwilling to make the necessary
life changes that the others using the support have. Welfare programs were started to help those who
have fallen into an undesirable situation such as losing a job. These programs are not setup to aid in
or assist in people's drug habits. Drug use has substantially risen over the years many of the drugs
that people are using are worse than recreational marijuana use. They are also set up to help mothers
with children to keep their children at home and not in foster care. Also to ensure that children and
theirs parents have food, shelter, and basic everyday essentials. Drug testing those who receive
public assistance would be beneficial to the whole country. While there will always be these that
insist that drug testing these people is unconstitutional. It also appears that those taking advantage of
the system is also unconstitutional. Drug testing, as a requirement for welfare, would ensure that

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ( Snap )
In spite of the United States being among the most developed economies in the world, poverty and
hunger continue to be a major challenge affecting part of the population (Plumer, 2013). According
to American Diabetic Association, millions of people live without enough quantity of food
consumption while others survive on food with poor nutritional levels (Drago & Goody, 2010).
Almost 50 percent of overall food stamp recipients are children, and over 80 percent of the overall
benefits are allocated to vulnerable families including the disabled, the elderly, or children.
However, considering the current economic environment characterized by increasing food prices,
low wages, and lack of jobs, the importance of food assistance initiative continue to become popular
among million of American citizens, across the country (Plumer, 2013). This paper will focus on
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) popularly known as Food Stamps as one of the
most important food assistance program in the Country.
Statistics/Current Situation
According to the recent statistics by United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition,
the country's Food Stamps Program (FSP) experienced varying results in 2014. The number of
applicants and average allowances declined slightly compared to 2013. However, the number of
participants are still higher compared to 2004, regardless of the development of the economy over

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Essay
Step 1 The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has become an immense support
for food insecurity, particularly in low–income families in our country. The SNAP program has been
initiated to reduce hunger during economic crisis and has become crucial in helping its participants
to meet their dietary needs (Blumenthal, 2012 pg.50). However, there is a main concern is that
SNAP participants are also at risk for developing obesity and other chronic disease. The SNAP
program finds that the obesity epidemic is associated with huge economic burdens on medical cost,
if not addressed at right time. The Farm Bill containing SNAP program was signed into law in
February, 2014 after intense debate on its effectiveness and efficiency (Farm Bill, 2014). During the
debate, the congressional legislation addressed the importance of healthy eating for participants to
receive proper nutrition in their diet (Blumenthal, 2012 pg.50). The policy reports that SNAP
program will focus on food insecurity and also provide health outcome for obesity among
participants. This policy needs to be modified to expand other nutrition assistance program for
SNAP participants to select healthy food choices. Such an educational program would benefit most
states offering nutrition information to assist SNAP participants to eat healthier and be physically
active. Step 2 The SNAP program is effective in addressing the fact that about 1/3 of Americans
experiencing food insecurity and 2/3 of

Peer Assistance Programs for Nurses
Substance abuse among health care professionals is an issue that is continually gaining more
attention due to the harmful affects it can have individuals as well as the patients. Substance abuse
can greatly hinder the ability to provide quality care and if left unchecked could lead to serious
implications within the health care facility. There are a significant amount of nurses and health care
providers that deal with substance abuse problems. At one point, it was estimated, that 2–3%, of all
nurses were addicted to drugs (Trinkoff, & Storr, 1998). To encourage nurses to seek help, the Texas

After researching peer assistance programs, it is apparent that they foster several ethical principles.
The most prevalent of these ethical issues include autonomy, beneficence, non–malfeasance, and
fidelity. Autonomy refers to a person's right of freedom or the right to make their own choices,
assuming they are mentally competent to do so. An example of this would be the nurses right to
seek help for a substance abuse problem. The nurse has the freedom to choose whether or not to go
to treatment and no one else can force him or her to obtain help. Beneficence is the ability to prevent
harm or promote good within the heath care setting. Non–malfeasance is to do no harm and fidelity
states that it is the nurse's job to always practice faithfully. It is these ethical principles that serve as
the backbone for all nursing practice. Nurses are required to abide by these principles as stated by
the rules and regulations set forth by the Texas Board of Nursing and the Nursing Practice Acts. In
regard to this case study, several ethical perspectives by both the patient and the nurse need to be
considered. First of all, when it comes to substance abuse the patient would most likely take the
perspective that the nurse violated the ethical codes of fidelity, beneficence, and non–malfeasance.
The patient has the right to receive proper treatment and when a nurse abuses substances,

The Food Stamp Program And The Supplemental Nutrition...
Formerly known as the Food Stamp Program (FSP), The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program (SNAP) is the largest federal nutrition–assistance program and exists to protect low–
income Americans from hunger and its associated consequences by increasing access to food.
Approximately 44 million people received SNAP benefits this year as of August of 2016.1 Due to
the fact that low–income Americans tend to have problems with obesity and poor diet2,3, it would
make sense that there would be interest to endorse healthy choices by means of federally nutrition
assistance programs.4 However, there is insufficient evidence to require SNAP participants to spend
a certain percentage of their benefits on healthy foods because food stamp participation may not
contribute to poor diet quality, restrictions may not be effective in changing what food stamp
participants purchase, and there is no solid evidence that exists that Food Stamp Program
participation directly leads to obesity.
This policy is not necessary for a variety of reasons. For one, participation in the Food Stamp
program may not necessarily contribute to poor diet quality. A statement released by the USDA
claims that food stamp recipients are equally likely to choose foods with minimal nutritional value
as those who do not receive food stamp benefits4. In a recent evaluation and analysis of many

Issues dealt with by the policy
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a program developed and administered
by the United States Department Agriculture; to support families and individuals with low income
by providing nutrition assistance in coordination with State agencies and other organizations such as
State agencies, faith based organizations and educators. In addition, SNAP provides a variety of
parallel benefits to society regarding its economy. The goal of SNAP is to reduce hunger of families
and individuals who qualify by facilitating their food purchases (United States Department of
Agriculture, 2014) .
The program works by providing to low income families electronic coupons through a system called
Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT). Benefactors receive a card and use it instead of a paper coupon
(Food Research and Action Center, 2010).

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Essay
The recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are ripping off the government for
millions. According to data collected, "Food stamp fraud costs taxpayers about $750 million a year,
or 1 percent of the $75 billion program that makes up the bulk of the department's total budge"
(www.fns.usda.gov). A better resort to these burdens to taxpayers should be better oversight and
cutbacks. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is one government assistance program
that needs to be revitalized.
It's important to realize The SNAP program which actually uses debit cards, provides modest but
crucial aid to families in need. SNAP recipients are ripping off the government for millions of
dollars by illegally selling their benefit cards for cash sometimes even in the open, on eBay or
Craigslist and then asking the government for replacement cards. In addition, several studies have
found a correlation between SNAP participation and increased body mass among adult women.
"The U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2008 review of available research found that while use of
food stamps didn't increase obesity among children, adult men, or the elderly, studies show adult
women are 2 to 5 percent more likely to become obese if they receive food stamps for more than a

allows them to have the ability to pay for their post secondary education.
To completely understand the relationship between OSAP and Social Welfare, we must first

Summary: The Employee Assistance Program
Stress is a part of life, that everyone is faced with, it can be detrimental or beneficial. As individuals
take on various roles, having to adapt to the changes in environment from work to family can be
challenging. Maintaining a balance between meeting the demands and expectations of the
workplace can lead to overwhelming feelings, if stress is not appropriately managed. Equally
important, that the individual act responsibly on their own time by dedicating time to themselves,
and what they enjoy doing to stay healthy, in this manner having more control in personal life,
which can carry over to workplace. If the individual feels overwhelmed, stressed at work, burned
out, or dissatisfied at the job, then work resources such as Employee Assistance ... Show more

Therefore, some businesses have become proactive by offering employees stress management
programs. One of the most common is the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which is
sometimes integrated with human resources and provided by clinical/counseling psychologists,
counselors, and social workers (Thomas & Hersen, 2002). EAP can encompass wellness as an
umbrella service, while other organizations may offer EAP and Wellness separately. Some of the
services provided are the following: mental health services, and financial advice or planning
(Thomas & Hersen, 2002). According, to Cowell, Bray, & Hinde (2011), "In 1994, 27.2 million
people had access to EAP, and this number grew to 66.5 million by 2001" (Cowell et al., 2011).
EAP is increasing in popularity, and a need has been recognized and associated by the workplace as
a means to reach out to employees, therefore creating a more productive work environment, with
less absenteeism, and lower healthcare costs in the U.S. From the business perspective, according to
Sledge & Lazar (2014) "for every dollar spent for the program, there is an expected return of
between $5.17 and $6.47" (Sledge & Lazar, 2014). Although the employer may not see the benefit
right away, EAP and stress management programs are a great investment in the long run for a happy
employee and decreased health

An Article On Food Assistance Programs
Before We SNAP Food assistance programs in the United States have always generated a lot of
debate among citizens, congress, and the media. No matter which side of the fence you sit on, the
truth is that this program is designed to help those in need. According to an article in the Washington
Post, Brad Plumer states that there are at least 47 million people who collect Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program aide (Plumer), otherwise known as SNAP, from the government. These people
are collecting this in order to survive; however the United States government has targeted SNAP in
order to cut down on the national debt. Robert Rector believes that this reform is much needed and
should have been done sooner, but Dottie Rosenbaum argues that this benefit is a necessity in the
United States. Many people often think of the negative side effects of collecting this aid, and how
the bad outweighs the good. Robert Rector is a senior researcher for Heritage.org, and believes that
SNAP needs to be reformed for the good of the nation. Robert Rector also played a vital role in the
1996 welfare reformation legislation. Throughout his service to his country he has earned the
nickname as an "intellectual godfather" when it comes to welfare reform. In his article he covers the
negative side effects of being on SNAP, discusses the benefits of reforming the program, and covers
the possible outcomes if it is reformed. He argues that if it is reformed it will adversely affect the

The Supplementation Nutrition Assistance Program
The Supplementation Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), prior to October 2008 referred to as
Food Stamps, was legislatively established nationwide in 1974 by the United States Congress.
However, the Food Stamp Act of 1977 established comprehensive reform of the federally supported
entitlement program setting the structure of the program today (Food Stamp Act of 1977). SNAP
provides in–kind monthly benefits to provide nutrition assistance to low income families and
individuals. With over 22 million households in the United States being served by the program in
2014, SNAP continues to be the nation's largest domestic nutritional assistance program (Hoynes &

The early 1980s saw a decrease in funding for SNAP, even as participation in the program had
continued to grow. In the late 1980s and 1990s, funding levels were increased, but there was a drop
in the participation among those eligible (King, 1999). During the welfare reform periods of the mid
1990s, SNAP was one of the federal benefit programs that had limited changes compared to other
welfare programs who had more drastic modifications as part of welfare reform. Welfare reform did
create limited benefits for immigrants and did not allow those who had drug felonies to receive
SNAP. Legislation in the late 1990s created the removal of some of restrictions on immigrants and
gave benefits to those with disabilities (Hoynes & Schanzenbach, 2015). In the early 2000s food
stamps began moving to Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, which were later mandated by the
Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (2002 Farm Bill). The reauthorization of SNAP as
part of the 2002 Farm Bill and the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 (2008 Farm Bill)
created many of the eligibility criteria today (Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002;

States and the least access to affordable healthcare (Nies, 2011). In Indiana, the Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides food assistance to low and no income people and
families living in the United States (U.S.). It is a federal aid program administered by the Food and
Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), however, distribution of benefits
occurs at the state level. In Indiana, the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) is
responsible for ensuring federal regulations are initially implemented and consistently applied in
each county. People can apply for this assistance at their local Division of Family Resources. There
are also many places that participate in the emergency food assistance program (TEFAP) and food
pantries. In Lake County, Indiana, the largest food pantry is the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana,
which is a TEFAP participant and also a soup kitchen. They are open Monday through Friday during
the day. There are also food pantries in trustee offices and churches, but some of them are by referral

Financial Assistance Program For Health Coverage
Mrs. Jones, like many older adults, is on a fixed income, has Medicare for health coverage, but lacks
prescription drug coverage. She was recently prescribed a new medication by her physician, which
she cannot afford. As Mrs. Jones nurse, it is my responsibility to advocate for her by providing
education and sharing information on the multiple different avenues available to decrease the cost of
the medication prescribed. I will identify three strategies in which I can help Mrs. Jones afford her
medication. First, I will provide education on her insurance plan and explain Medicare Drug Plans
and their enrollment process. Secondly, I will identify a financial assistance program which she
might qualify for. Finally, I will identify different ways to lower the cost of the medication such as
coupons, drug discount cards, switching to a generic medication, and store programs ("Prescription
Drug," 2014). All of these options are a solution to Mrs. Jones problem. In the meantime, it may be
beneficial to obtain free samples from the physician 's office if possible, but this only makes sense if
there is a strong likelihood that she will eventually be able to afford the new medication.
First, I must assess Mrs. Jones understanding of her insurance plan. Is she even aware that she doesn
't have prescription drug coverage? According to Cohen and Villarroel (2015), "approximately one

Employee Assistance Programs
Employee Assistance Programs Introduction One of the main objectives in any organization is to
have a team of employees that is able to work at their maximum best to meet the set organizational
targets. For this objective to be achieved, employees of the organization should be fit enough to
ensure maximum production. Organizations that appreciate that success is mainly dependent on the
output of their employees place priority on the wellbeing of employees. There are various issues that
may affect the productivity of an employee. The issues may be personal or may be as a result of
pressure from the work place or work mates. Some of the issues could be as a result of drug
substance abuse or alcoholism. Others could be family problems, legal or financial issues. Of all the
possible reasons that could affect an employee's performance, alcoholism is given least attention.
This is because alcohol is still not a legal substance and the least that an organization would do is to
set policies that no employee should be drunk during working hours. As for the other issues, a
certain program better known as the Employee Assistance Program has been set to help employees
deal with them ADDIN EN.CITE Affairs2007801(Affairs, 2007)8018016Bureau of National

Advocacy Programs
As of late, there are many times when we all needed a shoulder to cry on or simply just someone to
talk to. Chaplains are volunteers, normally associated with a religious institution, that volunteer to
help in times of need. They are there to help emergency personnel, as well as, citizens. There are
certainly more pros then cons with Chaplains. Chaplains are there to help, anyone. The only
negative could be someone wanting a specific religious group and not getting it. According to
www.ThePoliceChaplainProgram.org (2016), the role of the Chaplain is to be the 'balancer.' The
Police Chaplain is to provide support for Police Officer and civilians in their needs. Chaplains are

People continuously need help, especially victims of crimes. Victims need assistance in all sorts of
ways. Depending on the situation victims may need someone to talk to, help in court, and may need
some sort of aftercare of therapy. There are many victim assistant programs that can do all these
things and more. Today I am going to focus on a program based in Ohio and can be found online at
www.victimassistanceprogram.org. This program offers a wide variety of services to help victims.
Again, the pros far exceed the cons. One of biggest cons I can come up with, is a victim not
connecting or liking the advocate assigned to them. The Victim Assistance Program offers a 24–
hour hotline so people can call in any time to get help. According to their website (2013), Victim
Assistance Program staff, interns and volunteers share the responsibility of providing victims with
support on the 24–hour crisis hotline. Because our agency serves victims of all crime types, those
answering the hotline are trained to offer compassionate and nonjudgmental crisis intervention,
emotional support, safety plans, information on victims' legal rights, community referrals as well as
education on common reactions crime victims may

Mandatory Public Assistance Programs
Can we continue to support individuals who abuse their welfare benefits? The public assistance
programs created during the 1930's that have provided a safety net for people living below the

needed to thwart the irrational spending of supporting welfare recipients that misuse their benefits to
obtain illegal drugs or alcohol. I feel that drug screening new applicants or beneficiaries who
currently receive public assistance should become mandatory to strengthen the integrity,
accountability, and health of our welfare program in America.
First and most important, the integrity of our public assistance programs need strengthening.

cash and purchases illegal drugs. To improve transparency, I would eliminate the ability to withdraw
currency from an automated teller machine by discontinuing the debit feature of an EBT card.
Changing a benefit card from debit to credit would remove paper currency from the equation, and
provide a detailed record of how an individual has spent their monthly cash award. After
interviewing a family friend who had received welfare for many years, she concurred that testing
should be implemented in order to receive benefits. She then clarified to me that every chemically
dependent welfare recipient she met in her life supported their drug or alcohol addiction with cash
benefits received while collecting welfare. She then went into detail on how food stamps were

Programs Offering Food and Medical Assistance
Along with cash assistance programs, there are many programs that offer food and medical
assistance. Emergency food programs help supplement the diets of low–income needy people by
providing food at no cost. Foods banks and churches, both offer emergency food when a family or
individual is in need. SNAP which was formerly known as food stamps is a food benefit program
that offers low–income people and families help to buy the food needed to maintain a healthy diet
and retain good health. The benefits are provided on a link card that is accepted at most grocery
stores. There are limits as to what can be purchased with SNAP benefits, such as; cigarettes and any
other tobacco products, alcohol, gasoline, and any hot, already prepared foods. Along with food, you
are able to also purchase vegetable and fruit seeds to be able to grow your own foods in a garden
(DHS Programs). Women, Infants, and Children, or WIC is a food assistance program for women
infants and children. The program helps pregnant women, new mothers and young children eat well
and stay healthy. Special checks are used to buy, foods like; milk juice, eggs, cheese, cereal, beans,
bread, peanut butter, and formula and baby food for infants and babies. Most states also have a

The United States does not spend too much on the food stamp (SNAP program) and no one deserves
to go hungry. Every year during budget talks the welfare program comes up as the government
explores ways to cut the budget. There seems to be a lot of unnecessary spending due to things like
abuse of the system and program administration. There are many areas in which reforms could be
instituted and the program could be expanded without misappropriation of funds.
There should be greater oversight on the programs' overall administration. Those charged with
determining eligibility and administering the program need to receive more training and education

Rather than adhering to a strict set of stereotypical rules regarding eligibility, caseworkers should be
give more flexibility and latitude to determine eligibility based on each individual's unique
circumstances, such as student status or unemployment situation. Additionally, individuals in the
SNAP program should be given more access to programs and resource that could help them escape
whatever situation that caused them to require SNAP to begin with, such as the TRA, a benefit
extended to those collecting unemployment benefits. In a CATO Policy Analysis article by Michael
Tanner he points out that "according to the USDA nearly 18 million American households remain
food insecure" and the food stamp program needs reform. (Snap Failure; The Food Stamp Program

minimum of a 6 hour school load plus work 20 hours and get paid for work. (Points of Eligibility,

Food Assistance Program Essay
Introductory Summary
Today the majority of our farm bill is dedicated to food assistance programs. In 2013 through the
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP) the U.S fed 47.6 million citizens at the cost of
76.4 billion. Another food assistance program called WIC has fed 9 million woman, infants, and
children at the price of 7 billion. The American government is doing a tremendous job at feeding the
less fortunate through these programs but like many programs they need to be improved. Through
the SNAP program participants are able to spend taxpayer money on sugar filled soft drinks and
candy. The new bill that is being prepared will limit the purchase of these unnecessary products.
This bill will restrict participants to simple food staples such as bread, beans, fruit, vegetables and
rice. The new bill will also add white potatoes to the WIC program. These changes that need to be
made will contribute in boosting the demand of multiple commodities and help eliminate unneeded
aid to unhealthy foods.

decrease in demand will lower the price of rice back to the original equilibrium price. In the short

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Essay
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, otherwise known as SNAP, originates from the
Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933. It was established in the Great Depression era as the Federal
Surplus Relief Corporation when crop prices fell drastically and farms were struggling to deal with
the excess supply. The Federal government bought the surplus as discounted prices and distributed
them to hunger relief agencies. In 1939 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal
program, the Food Stamp Plan was created by Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace to formalize
the food distribution efforts. Although this initial program ceased in 1943 because of a decrease in
the number of people living in poverty, it was reintroduced in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy
through a food stamp pilot program. In 1964, the Food Stamp Act was passed by President Lyndon
Johnson. This program required the purchase of "stamps" based on the participant's income level to
permit the purchase of low–cost nutritional food. After a program revision in 1977 which ended the
requirement for participants to purchase stamps, a nutritional educational program called SNAP–
Education was added to the food stamp program in 1981. This program allowed states to apply for
matching funds from the Federal government to deliver nutrition education to eligible persons. In
the 1990s, efforts were made to streamline administration of the program which included the
introduction of an Electronic Benefit

unsheltered, meaning they sleep outside on the streets, or in makeshift tent cities (The State of
Homelessness in America 2015, 2015). While the stigma of those who are homeless is widely

Drug Assistance Programs

  • 1. Drug Assistance Programs Drugs administered in a physician's office and certain cancer drugs are covered by the Medicare Plan B. more than 60% of the new cancer diagnosis occur among the elderly hence chemotherapy and oncology drugs are covered in Medicare Part B. States effort to provide coverage for seniors Having recognized the financial burden of the elderly due to high prices of prescription drugs, many states have responded by creating programs to help in drug coverage for seniors. In the past few years, the states have increased their expenditures to cater for senior drug programs. Majority of the states have drug assistance programs for the elderly. The states have devised ways to cater for these new developments. For example in Pennsylvania its PACE program ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The assistance program was entirely funded by the state's revenue. Low–income seniors in the state of Illinois can now access any drug covered by the Medicaid with copayments and other cost sharing programs. States offering Subsidies for private coverage Proponents of subsidies for private coverage have always argued that the best solution to the seniors' coverage of prescription drugs is helping the seniors to have private coverages by making it more affordable through subsidies. In 1999, Nevada tried this approach, although it was faced by myriad of problems in its implementation making the legislation to be changed two years later. The state offers subsidies to the tune of 100% of the drug coverage premium to the eligible seniors. Coordination of manufacturers program Drug manufacturers offer free drugs to the needy who cannot afford their drugs. Patients have to work with the doctors to submit a letter or an application with supporting documents to give evidence of both financial and medical needs. The process is complicated for low–income seniors who take different drugs from different manufacturers. Every manufacturer has their own way of application process this makes it even more difficult for needy patients to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Social Assistance Programs Key Points With Marcella being in a hit in run and her with the both of them serving a tragic incident which has continued from that day forth. Marcella was paralyzed from the chest down. Dave and Marcella did not have health insurance. This incident caused the family into the tangled web of means–tested social assistance. The writer even believed she knew much about means–tested assistance program. As the writer learned that these programs are really not benefiting people they are actually affecting the lives of many people who are depending on these programs. Marcella and Dave had to make a drastic change in their life by spending down their assets and drop their income to near poverty level to receive the help they need due to the American Safety net which is a program to assist with the poor. Marcella and her family will have to continue to live with these restrictions for the rest of their lives unable to save for retirement, use tax free college saving for the baby and unable to develop an emergency fund. They will not be able to enjoy life as a middle class family. In my belief the writer wanted to show that many people are going through this tragic and the prevalence of low–income work and unequal access to education have generated vast–and growing–economic inequality. The experience that Dave and Marcella ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Dave was not offered any health insurance or any type of benefits with his job. Also, many employees are not offered welfare benefits such as health insurance, paid sick days, disability insurance and saving plans for retirement. • 3. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Purpose of Program In regards to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the purpose of the organization could be described as insuring that eligible, low–income individuals and families have access to nutritional and economic benefits. According to the United Stated Department of Agriculture, SNAP is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net (USDA, 2016). The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) assists state agencies, nutrition educators, neighborhood, and faith–based organizations to ensure that those deemed eligible for nutritional assistance are able to make informed decisions in regards to applying for the program and are able to access benefits. The FNS also works with state partners and the retail community ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the Reagan administration, the Food Stamps Program would suffer severe budget cuts in the year 1981 but was later restored funding in 1988 and 1990 as a means to combat the hunger crisis in America. This led to the accessibility of the EBT card. In the 2008 Farm Bill, the Food Stamp Program would be renamed the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or "SNAP" for short. During the year 2011, the program would become recognized as the largest federal food assistance program in the country, serving 14% of the population (more than 45 million American citizens). On the 7th day of February, 2014, President Barack Obama would sign into law the 2014 Farm Bill, which is also referred to as the Agricultural Act of 2014. In April, 2015 the USDA awarded $31.5 million in funding to local, state, and national organizations to support programs that help participants in SNAP increase their purchase of fruits and vegetables. Philosophical Base of Program When attempting to determine whether SNAP is residual or institutional, one must first be able to differentiate between the two. Residual Social Work is defined as either "reactive" or "gap– filling". This sort of approach deals with needs as they come and attends to those that can't be addressed by any other societal means. On the other hand, Institutional Social Work takes an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Food Assistance Programs For Food Aid Programs As expressed by Wellman et al. (2002), "older adults will double to some 70 million in 2030, reflecting an increase from 12.4% today to 20% of the US population in 2030." As a result of this data an increase in societal level food interventions are important to implement to meet the nutritional needs of the elderly. Food assistance programs can be a solution to address this problem. The importance of elders of having the appropriate foods for health and the struggles they have in acquiring these foods suggests that elderly food assistance programs might develop better ways of helping them obtained such foods (Wolfe et al., 2003). Food assistance program that exist currently is the Food Stamp Program. This program provides benefits that can be used to purchase specific foods. The eligibility for benefits is determined on the basis of household income and assets. All age groups can receive benefits, but special rules for households with elderly members have been established (Guthrie & Lin, 2002). Commodity Supplemental Food Program is another food distribution program that currently operates in 23 states, in the District of Columbia, and on two Indian reservations (Guthrie & Lin, 2002). The eligible requirement for elderly is that they must have a household income at or below 130% of federal poverty guidelines (Guthrie & Lin, 2002). • 6. Public Housing Assistance Programs Ever since the New Deal, the Federal Government has been spending billions of dollars each year to ensure that everyone has a roof over their head. Out of this effort eventually arose the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which now administers three main public housing assistance programs (Edson, 2011). Much literature providing an overview of housing vouchers distinguishes between the different types of rental assistance, including project units, Section 8 project–based assistance, and Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers. It is important to distinguish between tenant– based assistance and rental–based assistance (HUD.Gov, 2017). To do so, he utilized data from nineteen nationally representative studies, such as the National Center for Education Statistics and the Long–Term Trend and Main National Assessment of Educational Progress. Taking into account factors such as age and grade of students, as well as the educational attainment of the parents, he provides differences in test scores between high and low– income children, concluding that the educational achievement gap has widened in recent years (Reardon, 2011). To demonstrate this gap numerically for the state of Iowa, the DailyHerald has compiled a working database on the test–score differences, depending on the individual grade of the child and income bracket of the child's family (Broderick, 2014). Additionally, sociologists Geoffrey Wodtke and David Harding conducted a study to measure the high school graduation rate of high– poverty, versus low–poverty children and found that the chances of finishing high–school are far lower for children whose families are in the lowest income bracket than for more economically privileged children (Wodtke & Elwert, 2011). Databases from The College Board reveal that this gap in achievement also translates into SAT scores, and later acceptance into college. Individual standardized test scores rise with the income of the student's parents (College Board, 2013). Outside of household fires, flooding along the river is Chattanooga's greatest concern. FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) Provides funding to help applicants, in this case the Hamilton County Department of Emergency Services, develop activities needed for projects that are geared towards building resiliency with flooding. • 10. Essay On Employee Assistance Programs Working with Employee Assistance Programs I was glad to read about the different settings available for the clinical mental health counselor to work within. It is always good to know several options exists, and if you do not like where you currently are working, you could always switch settings. Before reading the text, I was thinking of working in private practice, but I am now unsure if I would be willing to take risks associated with the private practice area. The responsibility of being solely liable for all financial matters, accounting, administrative work, and inconsistent revenue streams is quite scary (Gladding & Newsome, 2018, p. 385). I am aware of lines being blurred when counseling, for instance, a boss and his/her employee. An asset I would like to have is some wellness and prevention training because a focus in EAP counseling is geared towards wellness. To become an EAP counselor, I would need to participate in continuing education training, including substance abuse and addictions counseling; knowledge about the business world is also a necessary asset. Employee Assistance Programs Implementing Employee Assistance Programs Introduction When the average employee hears the words "employee assistance programs", he may immediately think of medical benefits. Another employee may think of Workers Compensation. Yet another may think of further training for possible advancement. Although all of their conceptions are true, they are not all inclusive. There are several parts to the vehicle called Employee Assistance Programs, or EAPs. Employee Assistance Programs are defined by Myers as "structured programs that utilize technical, administrative, and professional human services and personnel people, on either a contractual or employment basis, to meet the needs of troubled employees" (4). Studies show that this type of stress on a woman in the workforce contribute to the high rate of alcoholism among working women (Myers 7). It is suspected that this stress contributes to higher rates of drug use as well. Also on the list of troubles are gambling, legal problems, violence and mental illness. 80 to 100 million people in the United States gamble regularly. Of that number, 6 percent ( six million people) have a problem with compulsive gambling (Myers 6). Violence is a serious issue in the workplace. As many as 20 workers a week are murdered (Cascio 589). On–the–job violence may be the effect of any number of stressors on an employee who feels there is no other way to vent his frustration. There could be any number of reasons, previously stated and otherwise, that might precipitate legal problems also. Legal problems and gambling debts are two additional stressors that an otherwise outstanding employee may have to tackle, causing him to be violent or in some other way troubled. In past 25 years, EAPS have grown very fast in quantity, focus, importance and scope to all organizations. This new form of intervention has been implemented not only in the North America but to varying degrees and in contrasting packages in other parts of world. In varying forms EAPs have also been adopted by unions and by medical, legal and other professional societies as well as by most civilian federal workers in the United States (Roman et al., 1987). • 13. A Review Of Tanf Assistance Programs A Review of the TANF Cash Assistance Programs Roughly 20% of the United States' children are living in families suffering from poverty (National Center for Education Statistics, 2015). According to Yeung, Linver and Brooks–Gunn (2002); Pungello et al., (2010); and Evans (2004), economic hardships increase the likelihood of "maladaptive" behaviors while decreasing school performance and poor cognitive–behavioral development. (1861–1879; 410–426; 77–92). To prevent this, lawmakers were spurred into creating public policy to actively reduce the rate of childhood poverty along with associated risk factors as well as foster economic independency in families apart from the welfare system. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Act, TANF, was created out of a block grant from PRWORA. TANF replaced two programs: the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training program– JOBS–and the Aid to Families with Dependent Children–AFDC–program that provided assistance to mothers and children. Then president, Bill Clinton remarked that the creation of this act would " [end] welfare as we know it" (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 2015). AFDC had been criticized for providing assistance to non–working mothers and incentives for children out of marriage. As such, program's design was tailored to fill the needs of poor families through cash assistance so that they would be able to obtain "economic self–sufficiency" (Abt, 2001). • 14. Public Assistance For Welfare Programs Many people in our country have turned to public assistance for help in our troubling economy. Welfare programs in our country date back to the early 1900's. When these programs first started they were set up to support those who genuinely needed it. Many of the people who use these programs are hard working people who have had unfortunate things happen to them. However for those who use government assistance for good there are those who take advantage of the programs. Those who take advantage have turned to drugs and are unable or unwilling to make the necessary life changes that the others using the support have. Welfare programs were started to help those who have fallen into an undesirable situation such as losing a job. These programs are not setup to aid in or assist in people's drug habits. • 15. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ( Snap ) In spite of the United States being among the most developed economies in the world, poverty and hunger continue to be a major challenge affecting part of the population (Plumer, 2013). According to American Diabetic Association, millions of people live without enough quantity of food consumption while others survive on food with poor nutritional levels (Drago & Goody, 2010). Almost 50 percent of overall food stamp recipients are children, and over 80 percent of the overall benefits are allocated to vulnerable families including the disabled, the elderly, or children. However, considering the current economic environment characterized by increasing food prices, low wages, and lack of jobs, the importance of food assistance initiative continue to become popular among million of American citizens, across the country (Plumer, 2013). This paper will focus on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) popularly known as Food Stamps as one of the most important food assistance program in the Country. Statistics/Current Situation According to the recent statistics by United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition, the country's Food Stamps Program (FSP) experienced varying results in 2014. The number of applicants and average allowances declined slightly compared to 2013. However, the number of participants are still higher compared to 2004, regardless of the development of the economy over the years (Corrigan, 2015). This is mainly blamed on the increased ... • 16. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Essay Step 1 The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has become an immense support for food insecurity, particularly in low–income families in our country. The SNAP program has been initiated to reduce hunger during economic crisis and has become crucial in helping its participants to meet their dietary needs (Blumenthal, 2012 pg.50). However, there is a main concern is that SNAP participants are also at risk for developing obesity and other chronic disease. The SNAP program finds that the obesity epidemic is associated with huge economic burdens on medical cost, if not addressed at right time. The Farm Bill containing SNAP program was signed into law in February, 2014 after intense debate on its effectiveness and efficiency (Farm Bill, 2014). During the debate, the congressional legislation addressed the importance of healthy eating for participants to receive proper nutrition in their diet (Blumenthal, 2012 pg.50). The policy reports that SNAP program will focus on food insecurity and also provide health outcome for obesity among participants. This policy needs to be modified to expand other nutrition assistance program for SNAP participants to select healthy food choices. Such an educational program would benefit most states offering nutrition information to assist SNAP participants to eat healthier and be physically active. Step 2 The SNAP program is effective in addressing the fact that about 1/3 of Americans experiencing food insecurity and 2/3 of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Peer Assistance Programs for Nurses Substance abuse among health care professionals is an issue that is continually gaining more attention due to the harmful affects it can have individuals as well as the patients. Substance abuse can greatly hinder the ability to provide quality care and if left unchecked could lead to serious implications within the health care facility. There are a significant amount of nurses and health care providers that deal with substance abuse problems. At one point, it was estimated, that 2–3%, of all nurses were addicted to drugs (Trinkoff, & Storr, 1998). To encourage nurses to seek help, the Texas Peer Assistance Program for Nurses was created. After researching peer assistance programs, it is apparent that they foster several ethical principles. The most prevalent of these ethical issues include autonomy, beneficence, non–malfeasance, and fidelity. Autonomy refers to a person's right of freedom or the right to make their own choices, assuming they are mentally competent to do so. An example of this would be the nurses right to seek help for a substance abuse problem. The nurse has the freedom to choose whether or not to go to treatment and no one else can force him or her to obtain help. Beneficence is the ability to prevent harm or promote good within the heath care setting. Non–malfeasance is to do no harm and fidelity states that it is the nurse's job to always practice faithfully. It is these ethical principles that serve as the backbone for all nursing practice. Nurses are required to abide by these principles as stated by the rules and regulations set forth by the Texas Board of Nursing and the Nursing Practice Acts. In regard to this case study, several ethical perspectives by both the patient and the nurse need to be considered. First of all, when it comes to substance abuse the patient would most likely take the perspective that the nurse violated the ethical codes of fidelity, beneficence, and non–malfeasance. The patient has the right to receive proper treatment and when a nurse abuses substances, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Formerly known as the Food Stamp Program (FSP), The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest federal nutrition–assistance program and exists to protect low– income Americans from hunger and its associated consequences by increasing access to food. Approximately 44 million people received SNAP benefits this year as of August of 2016.1 Due to the fact that low–income Americans tend to have problems with obesity and poor diet2,3, it would make sense that there would be interest to endorse healthy choices by means of federally nutrition assistance programs.4 However, there is insufficient evidence to require SNAP participants to spend a certain percentage of their benefits on healthy foods because food stamp participation may not contribute to poor diet quality, restrictions may not be effective in changing what food stamp participants purchase, and there is no solid evidence that exists that Food Stamp Program participation directly leads to obesity. This policy is not necessary for a variety of reasons. For one, participation in the Food Stamp program may not necessarily contribute to poor diet quality. A statement released by the USDA claims that food stamp recipients are equally likely to choose foods with minimal nutritional value as those who do not receive food stamp benefits4. No matter which side of the fence you sit on, the truth is that this program is designed to help those in need. According to an article in the Washington Post, Brad Plumer states that there are at least 47 million people who collect Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program aide (Plumer), otherwise known as SNAP, from the government. These people are collecting this in order to survive; however the United States government has targeted SNAP in order to cut down on the national debt. Robert Rector believes that this reform is much needed and should have been done sooner, but Dottie Rosenbaum argues that this benefit is a necessity in the United States. Many people often think of the negative side effects of collecting this aid, and how the bad outweighs the good. Robert Rector is a senior researcher for Heritage.org, and believes that SNAP needs to be reformed for the good of the nation. Robert Rector also played a vital role in the 1996 welfare reformation legislation. Throughout his service to his country he has earned the nickname as an "intellectual godfather" when it comes to welfare reform. During the welfare reform periods of the mid 1990s, SNAP was one of the federal benefit programs that had limited changes compared to other welfare programs who had more drastic modifications as part of welfare reform. Welfare reform did create limited benefits for immigrants and did not allow those who had drug felonies to receive SNAP. Organizations that appreciate that success is mainly dependent on the output of their employees place priority on the wellbeing of employees. It was established in the Great Depression era as the Federal Surplus Relief Corporation when crop prices fell drastically and farms were struggling to deal with the excess supply. The Federal government bought the surplus as discounted prices and distributed them to hunger relief agencies. In 1939 as part of President Franklin D. Kennedy through a food stamp pilot program. In 1964, the Food Stamp Act was passed by President Lyndon Johnson. This program required the purchase of "stamps" based on the participant's income level to permit the purchase of low–cost nutritional food. After a program revision in 1977 which ended the requirement for participants to purchase stamps, a nutritional educational program called SNAP– Education was added to the food stamp program in 1981. This program allowed states to apply for matching funds from the Federal government to deliver nutrition education to eligible persons. In the 1990s, efforts were made to streamline administration of the program which included the introduction of an Electronic Benefit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While the severity of each individual's mental capacity varies, the obstacles to those who are challenged mentally, and are considered to be low income, face even more challenges. Because most are unable to make sound decisions for themselves, a family member or a guardian becomes a representative payee, receiving the benefits, filling prescriptions, and ensuring that the needs of the mentally ill person are being met.
