Summer Reading Essay: The Handmaid s Tale and Sex Thomas C. Foster, in his novel, How to Read
Literature Like a Professor, gives many examples of sex being shown symbolically in literature. He
imparts in the reader an idea that sex is everywhere in a typical novel, and that many details in a work
most details, even are representative of sex: Tall buildings? Male sexuality. Rolling landscapes?
Female sexuality. Stairs? Sexual intercourse. Falling down stairs? Oh my (Foster 136). And, yes sex is
truly everywhere in The Handmaid s Tale. The importance of sex in the dystopian society known as
Gilead is huge; sex is what the entire Gileadian regime is based around reproduction, more
specifically. Symbols of fertility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These flowers serve as a constant reminder of this fertility not just to the reader, but also to the
handmaids, whose main purpose is to reproduce. They are everywhere in the setting: a watercolor
picture of blue irises (14) in Offred s room; a fanlight of colored glass: flowers red and blue (15) at the
end of the hallway just outside that room; the bathroom, papered in small blue flowers, forget me nots,
with curtains to match (74); on the dining room table, white cloth, silver, flowers (78); the magic
flower, the withered daffodil (115) Offred steals from Serena s Parlor; the starry canopy of silver
flowers (233) adorning the Commander s bed. The flowers serve as hidden, almost subconscious
reminders of the handmaids sole purpose of fertility; they are usually mentioned offhandedly, as
miniscule, unimportant, yet ever present details. However, they are sometimes more directly noted and
compared to ideas of fertility, as in the case of Serena Joy s

Relationship Between British And Native Americans
The seventeenth century was a prime era for early America, with many historic happenings. From the
first British settlers invading on pre claimed Native American land to continual friction between the
two, the relationship between the two groups was unstable and dangerous. The Native Americans
originally considered trying to become allies with the English, but as time went on, a war would
emerge between Natives and the English settlers as to control the land. The English and Native
American relationship changed drastically due to two main factors: English seeking religious freedom
and economic prosperity. First, English seeking religious freedom caused a shift in the English/Native
initial relationship, like the pilgrims did a whole century before. The English wanted to incorporate
their Christian relationship into the Natives religion, as said in Document 1. Be it enacted by this
present assembly that for laying a surer foundation of the conversion of the Indians to Christian
religion, each town, city, borough, and particularly plantation... The English wanted to put a vital part
of their everyday life into the lives of the Natives living and thriving around them. Another source,
Source 3, was Matthaes Merian, An Indian Massacre of 1622, which was initiated by religion. In
1622, it was apparent to the Indians that the colonists intended to expand their holdings in Virginia.
The Indians felt threatened by this physical expansion, but were even more concerned about the

The Decision Making Of Judges Essay
According to Professor J. Peltason, The decision as to who makes the decision affects what decisions
will be made. Peltason s words refer to the inescapable human factor present in judicial process,
specifically in terms of the decision making of judges. Fairness and impartiality are two of the most
important considerations and desires the legal system should aim to achieve. Unfortunately, due to the
human factor, impartiality and fairness are ideal goals that are difficult to realize in the system.
Specific procedures are in place and meant to be practiced in order to ensure justice in the legal
system, and the process varies depending on the type of case. The different types of cases have
differing standards of proof, extensions of due process, and proceedings. On the basis of these
important differences and of specified proceedings, the efforts toward fairness in the civil process can
be evaluated.
On Wednesday, October 26th, after meeting with Judge Norma Lindsey s judicial assistant, I waited
for further instruction from Bailiff Victor Ramon outside of courtroom 5 3 where a civil trial would
take place. He led me to my seat in the courtroom, and I patiently waited for the jury selection to
begin. The jurisdiction of the court was state trial court in the civil circuit division, and around 10:15
AM, the session began with Presiding Judge Norma Lindsey. I remained at the courthouse until the
session concluded at 5:15 PM that evening. The counsels included the

Unburned Vegetation Survey
Results The percent coverage of the four types of vegetation was calculated using the data that we
gathered in this experiment. The values for the f tests and t tests were also calculated in this
experiment for the four different types of vegetation as well as for the DBH of species in burned and
unburned sites. The percent coverage of woody vegetation in burned sites: 27.8125% ± 29.83%, is
higher than that the percent coverage of woody vegetation in unburned sites: 15.25% ± 14.69%
(Figure 1). Grasses in burned areas also have higher percent coverage than the percent coverage of
grasses in unburned areas: 36.75% ± 30.01% for grasses compared to 5.125% ± 6.49% in the grasses
(Figure 1). The percent coverage of annuals perennials in burned ... Show more content on

The F test values in canopies (0.031271512) and sub canopies (0.005008424) are both below 0.05 so
we can say with 92% confidence that the canopy structures in burned and unburned areas differ and
with 97% confidence that the sub canopies vary between the burned and unburned areas. Unburned
areas tended to have better developed structures of canopy and sub canopy trees because they were
given more time to accumulate compared to recently burned areas which have recently undergone a
disturbance. The F test value for DBH (0.022472008) is also below 0.05 so we also have to assume
that there is variance in terms of DBH in burned and unburned sites. Unburned sites have larger trees
(larger DBH) because these trees had more time to grow compared to trees in recently burned sites.
Since the F tests values for the logs (0.076083352) and shrubs (0.340469754) were calculated to be
above 0.05, we are not able to draw definitive conclusions on this data, therefore we have to assume
that the logs and shrub structures did not vary within the burned and unburned sites (Klowden et al.
2015). Succession is evident in this experiment as there is an overall greater percent coverage of
grasses, woody plants, and annuals perennials in burned areas compared to open space. Open space is
greatest in unburned areas and there is more open space in unburned areas than burned areas; this is
mainly because the woody plants in unburned areas store lots of nutrients within themselves, therefore
having less grasses and smaller plants on forest floors (Dickman et al 2014). Five different species of
canopy trees were identified in unburned sites compared to only three species of canopy trees
identified in burned sites which allows me to conclude that there is more diversity in the species of
canopy trees in unburned areas than burned areas. There may have been more types of species found
in unburned

Over The Brink Of The Millennium Summary
What I Knew:
In the article Over the Brink of the Millennium , the author discussed language based learning
disabilities. While I did learn a lot about the disorder, I was familiar with how the disorder causes
problems attention, memory, comprehension, literacy, writing, and spelling, to name a few. Persons
with language based learning disabilities often struggle with school, fear reading, and writing. I knew
some of the symptoms and signs of someone with a language based learning disability.
What I Wanted To Know:
Before reading the article, based off of the topic, I was intrigued about learning more about how the
language learning disabilities affect children ranging from the ages of pre k through 21. My

The Pay For Performance Incentive Program
Abstract
The Pay for Performance incentive program is a new program being implemented across the United
States to measure the quality of care within health care organizations. There are both positive and
negative aspects of the Pay for Performance program that are based on information received from
organizations who have implemented the program within their organization. The regulations the
Federal Government has developed requirements for hospitals who serve Medicare patients as well as
establishing four metrics that are used to measure the quality of the employee. Employees who work
at an organization are given the opportunity to opt out of the Pay for Performance incentive program.
This gives the employee the ability to make decisions on their income potential. Pay for Performance
is a new aspect of the health care industry and will be used within the industry to measure quality of
employees for the foreseeable future.
Quality Health Care and Pay for Performance Incentives Pay for performance has been a topic debated
for many years in a wide range of professional settings as a way to increase employee productivity by
basing their pay on the quality of the employee s performance. Pay for Performance used within the
medical community is defined as a payment system that offers financial rewards to medical
professionals who meet or exceed specified benchmarks ( Pay For , 2009). Most approaches adjust the
payments to physicians and hospitals on the basis of

John Winthrop A Model Of Christian Charity Analysis
In 1630, Puritan leader John Winthrop delivered perhaps the most famous sermon in American history
entitled A Model of Christian Charity, in which he stressed to his fellow Puritans to adopt a sense of
unity by setting aside self interest for the sake of the community (Cohen, 2). Winthrop s idea of
putting community first has played a major role in American history, but as Winthrop probably knew
would happen, his idea of unity has always been at odds with those of self interest; as America is very
much a history of these competing forces. The forces of those willing to put aside their own interest
for unity, the common good, and for the preservation of the Union vs. those who have pursued their
own selfish ways. This paper will offer insights into how Winthrop s remarks have played out during
the first half of American history by examining certain individuals and events that have followed
along with Winthrop s idea, or those who have posed a challenge to it. Twenty three years before
Winthrop gave his sermon conflict over self interest vs. the common good was being played out in
Jamestown. Jamestown had been established in 1607 as a purely economic venture as Englishmen
traveled to the New World in pursuit of riches, following in the footsteps of the Spanish. These men
were consumed with their own self interest of finding gold and becoming rich as opposed to working
for the betterment of the colony, causing Jamestown to teeter on the edge of extinction for nearly a

Firs And The Emancipation Manifesto
Firs is an eighty seven year old servant at Madame Ranevsky s estate. Although he is old, but he is the
only character in the play that shows the positive and happy life in the past in the cherry orchard
estate. In act I Firs comments that now that he has finally seen his boss again he is ready to rest in
peace (p. 6), this being a foreshadow that at the end of the play he will actually die. In act II, Firs
comments on life was better before the serfs were freed, and that even after he, being a slave, was
freed, he stayed and worked on the estate for Madame Ranevsky (p. 22 23). This comment by Firs is a
representation of how the older generation views the emancipation manifesto and doesn t adapt and
accept the change, wishing that things stayed the same. Firs said, And when the Liberation came I ...

No one knows Firs s whereabouts; they all think he went to the hospital. What none of the characters
knew was that Firs was still inside the cherry orchard estate while it was being demolished. The fact
that Firs was forgotten represents the passing of Russia s old order. Although he was loyal to the
family even after the Liberation of the serfs, the family treated him with disloyalty, by leaving him
behind and caring only about their own lives but not caring about his, as well as treated him with
disrespect, by the way Gayef used to talk to him. This was shown in many occasions where Firs was
caring for Gayef s wellbeing, but Gayef responded by, What a plague you are, Firs! (p.22). This
response shows how Gayef has no respect whatsoever for Firs s age, loyalty and the fact that Firs
cares about Gayef and his wellbeing. The finale of the play is Firs s death and the demolishing of the
orchard, which is a portrayal of the change from the old Russia to the new Russia. Firs s ideals and
memories of the old Russia and the past will taken with him to the graves and

Passion Versus Moral Duty Illustrated in Thomas Hardy s...
Conflict between a character s intense passions and their moral duties is commonly expressed in
literature. Thomas Hardy s Jude the Obscure undoubtedly uses this theme throughout the novel. Hardy
creates two characters who are undeniably in love, however, they are forced to hide their great
passions for one another for they both are married to someone else. These intimate feelings drive to
two lovers, Jude and Sue, to neglect their commitments to their spouses and aspirations as they
attempt to establish a life together. The intimacy between the couple would slowly devour their
personal lives. Jude, the man in the relationship, had exceptionally high hopes for himself as a young
boy. He desired nothing else but to go to school, to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, Jude s passions for Sue lead him to disregard one other large component of his life, his
eccentric wife Arabella. Although, Jude had previously made this permanent covenant with another
woman, he could not help but dream of one day marrying Sue. Likewise, Sue was already involved
with an old schoolteacher named Phillotson. Sue was not especially fond of him but marriage is
marriage and she nevertheless made the ultimate commitment to him. However, as unavailable as the
two lovers were, they continued to nourish their fiery feelings. Torn between the man she loved and
her social responsibilities as a wife, Sue was at a loss of what to do. She knew the lady society
expected her to be, but she could never fully bring herself to accept such an unfulfilling life.
Therefore, after months of torturing herself in a miserable marriage, Sue succumbed to her true
feelings and left Phillotson to be with Jude. Jude, as well, had decided to divorce his wife in order to
properly be with Sue but with much less debate and toil than Sue when making her decision. Despite
their undying affection for one another, their decisions to disregard their marital commitments to their
previous spouses were selfish and unforgiving. The universe simply would not allow Sue and Jude to
go unpunished for their sin. Society constantly rejected their unlawful relationship and

Ailurus Fulgens Research Paper
Red Panda
Ailurus fulgens
Madison Gee
August 24, 2016
Background Information The red panda, classified as Ailurus fulgens, is a mammal and the only living
member of its family, Ailuridae. Red pandas are native to high altitude temperate forests, such as the
eastern Himalayas and Burma, as well as parts of Nepal, India, and Tibet. The subspecies Ailurus
fulgens fulgens can be found in Nepal and India, while the other, Ailurus fulgens styani, is native to
China. There are few differences between the two subspecies; Ailurus fulgens styani is slightly larger
and has stronger teeth. The first known account of the red panda took place in a 13th century scroll in
China, while the first westerner to document the species was French zoologist Frédéric Cuvier in
1825. Many believe that the name panda was derived from its Nepalese name, nigalya ponya, which
means bamboo eater. Today, the species ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They have evolved to be able to survive in their habitats, with coarse, reddish brown fur that blends in
with the moss and white lichens that cover the branches of the fir trees they live in. The underside of
their bodies is covered in dark fur that helps camouflage them in the canopy of the trees at night. This
thick fur covers the soles of their feet as well. The red panda is slightly larger than a domestic cat, but
its tail can extend to up to 23 inches long. The tail is used for balance when moving in the trees and as
a source of warmth on cold nights. Red pandas bone structure also gives them advantages in their
habitat. It is one of the few climbing animals that is able to rotate its ankles when climbing headfirst
down trees. It also shares the same modified wrist bone that giant pandas have, which aids them in
grabbing the bamboo they eat. Its curved claws help in grabbing branches and

Comparing Margaret Cavendish’s The Description of a New...
Comparing Margaret Cavendish s The Description of a New World, Called the Blazing World and Sir
Thomas More s Utopia
The so called Utopia the quasi perfect society flourishes in Margaret Cavendish s The Description of a
New World, Called a Blazing World and Sir Thomas More s Utopia. While the former is a dreamlike
account of fantasy rule and the latter a pseudo realistic travelogue, both works paint a picture of
worlds that are not so perfect after all. These imperfections glitter like false gemstones in the paths of
these Utopians religious beliefs, political systems, and philosophical viewpoints.
Religion and spirituality reach into the depths of the human psyche and strongly influence a nation s
way of life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In More s Utopia, everyone does indeed worship different gods, yet they must all believe in one single
eternal power. This allows Hythloday the narrator and his comrades to convert some of the Utopians
into Christians, for the citizens readily accept the one god notion and the practice of sharing
communal goods (More 517). No one is condemned due to his or her religious beliefs in Utopia. A
fanatic who begins condemning other religions is tried on a charge, not of despising their religion, but
of creating a public disorder and is sent into exile (More 518). Does this reflect a society with utopian
religious ideals? In Utopia, there are two sects of religious people the ascetic sect whose members do
not marry or eat meat, and the sect that allows its members to marry and eat meat. The Utopians
regard the second as more sensible, but the first holier. They believe that anyone [who] chose celibacy
over marriage and a hard life over a comfortable one on grounds of reason alone is insane; but as these
men say they are motivated by religion, the Utopians respect and revere them (More 520). Truly,
religion shapes a nation s identity and beliefs, and in the cases of the Blazing World and Utopia, some
aspects of their religion mars their perfect societies.
Closely linked to religion is marriage, a celebration governed by the government of Utopia. Marriage

This application was tested on a singular system, of Tantalum, Rhodium and Palladium (Ta Rh Pd).
The metrics that will be analyzed is how well the Phase Mapper Game s solution compared to

It should be noted that the user for Phase Mapper Game has much experience working with the system
so the time does not reflect what would be the average for a lay person. The system was not tested on
a lay person however because it has not been developed far enough to be that accessible. For this test

The Ebola Virus Affected The World
Ebola hemorrhagic fever, also known as Ebola is a deadly disease that can be caused by one of the
various types of Ebola viruses. Ebola affects primarily humans or nonhuman primates like
chimpanzees or gorillas, but recent research has discovered that other animals such as dogs, antelopes,
fruit bats, and pigs can be affected as well. It is believed that fruit bats are reservoir hosts to the virus
and are the main method that the virus is transmitted to other beings. The virus is usually introduced to
humans through blood, secretions, or organs or meat of animals that have been infected, but have not
been thoroughly cooked or cleansed.
The Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976, near the Ebola River, in what is now known as the
Democratic Republic of Congo. The different species of Ebola include: Bundibugyo, Reston, Taï

Sherlock Holmes Vs Duin Research Paper
Sherlock Holmes and Dupin are both very good detectives, however they both have their merits and
disadvantages. In this essay I will argue that Sherlock Holmes makes a better Detective than Dupin.
Dupin is arrogant, selfish, and imaginative, while Sherlock Holmes is Selfless, Confident, and he is
also imaginative like Dupin, but he does not let that imagination interfere with is work. Even though
Dupin and Sherlock Holmes both have merit with imagination, Sherlocks ability to not let his

Aid Disease In Poor Countries
The reading and the lecture are both about AIDs disease, which is causing massive human loss in poor
countries. The author of the reading believes that drug manufacturing companies are taking advantage
of the situation to make more money and present various solutions. The lecturer casts doubt on the
claims made in the article. He thinks that although drug companies sell their products at high prices,
the solutions the reading proposes will not work.
First of all, the author points out that the drugs prices and the drug manufacturers are just concerned
about high profits. It is mentioned that drug prices should be cheaper for the poor countries facing the
pandemic problem. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the drug companies cannot
reduce the price of the drugs. Furthermore, he argues that companies need high profits, as every

Piercings In The Workplace Essay
Tattoos and Piercings in the Workplace
Growing up I knew one day I would have tattoos. With my mom being covered in them, I couldn t
wait until the day I turned 18 so I could get my first tattoo. Sadly I was 7 years old when I realized I
wanted tattoos, so I had a very long time to wait. In the meantime, my mom and I found a replacement
for tattoos; piercings. By the time I was 11 I already had 3 earring holes in each ear, when I was 16 I
had 11 earring holes; yet with becoming 16, you enter the world of body piercings. For my 17th
birthday I got two piercings in my wrist and another on my tragus. So and so forth by the time I was
18, I had 20 piercings on body. Now being 19, I have 6 tattoos.
I got my first job when I was 16 at Claire s, an accessory store for females that also happens to pierce

Understanding The Family Dynamics, And School Preparation
Dr. Sampson, Black and Brown: Race, Ethnicity, and School Preparation gives great insight into
understanding the family dynamics which relate to parental educational involvement. To the credit of
research design, I believe the case studies presented on youth living poor from low income
communities adequately assesses the needs of students. It is also a strength of Dr. Sampson research
that information is given on how parents can engage in their children s education although they may
be in the midst of poverty and lack. By actually showing ways in which low income families produce
cultural and social capital, Dr. Sampson creates an even playing ground for parent participation and
shows that low income families alike possess a great deal of knowledge, skill and care for educational
success. One of Dr. Sampson overarching ideas is that children and influences by parents attitude and
(or) behavior. There are many variables that influence student achievement, I agree with Dr. Sampson
that attitudes and behavior is perhaps the foundation for achievement outcomes. Common practices
such as parents helping with home work and properly supervising children are referenced as key
supports for academic success.
Other strengths of Dr. Sampson arguments include the critical assessment that community
organization, families and schools need to collaborate in effort to foster greater academic achievement
in students. By acknowledging all actors that create various learning environments for

The Gap Between The Poor And The Rich
In the article named wealth written in 1889,the author, Andrew Carnegie stated his opinion on the
widening gap between the poor and the rich. In the late 19th century, the conflict between different
social classes is getting worsen. The problem of our age is the proper administration of wealth, so that
the ties of brotherhood may still bind together the rich and poor in harmonious relationship. 1. People
consider this difference as unfair and should be criticised. However, Mr Carnegie believe this
difference is highly beneficial. This change, however, is not to be deplored, but welcomed as highly
beneficial. 2.The author believed that the difference is essential to the progress of society It is well,
nay, essential for the progress of the race, that the houses of some should be homes for all that is
highest and best in literature and the arts, and for all the refinements of civilization, rather than that
none should be so. Much better this great irregularity than universal squalor. Without wealth there can

Mind Control Methods of 1984 and Today. Everyone wants more money. That s why people go to
college to make more money. That s why people rob banks to get more money. That s why people do
unethical business moves, to receive more money. We are living in a money hungry society. People
want more money because they know that money is power. This power allows us to change, shape and

At Winston s job in the ministry of truth, he re writes history to show that Big Brother is always
correct. Winston has constant reminders that Big Brother , the leader of the Inner Party, is always
watching and regulating his daily events. The Inner party makes such rules, so that the lower parties
become weaker and weaker and less chance of rebellion. The spirits and pocket of the people are
empty. This is good for the Inner Party because it keeps them in power, which is in turn richer. Yet,
Winston rebels against Big Brother and wont let the government control him in such a way. Winston is
viewed as the last humanist. He is interested with the basic God given rights of humans. Whether it is,
keeping a secret diary to preserve the truth, having forbidden sexual affairs or denouncing the party by
refusing to adhere to their false facts, Winston stands up for his beliefs until he can take no more. In
today s society, we are plagued by mind control methods as well. These are more subtle than those in
1984 but still have the same premise. The mind control methods used are aimed to achieve the same
goal as in 1984, that goal being power. Since we live in such a narcissistic and materialistic society,
power entails having money. The more money you have, the more powerful one can be. By using

Chewing Gum Should Be Allowed In School
How many times have you been asked to spit out your gum in class? Countless, I bet. Most teachers at
Episcopal abide by the policy that gum chewing in class is not allowed. They say it s inconsiderate.
They say it s distracting. They say it has no place in the classroom. These teachers, however, are
overlooking the countless benefits of gum chewing. Chewing gum in class can help students stay
focused, can help students stay active, and can help students perform better overall. Banning gum in
school more often than not can cause more harm than good. Gum chewing should be allowed in class.
Sitting in five classes a day for times ranging from 55 to 70 minutes, it is a battle of the will to stay on
task. Whether distracted by the middle schoolers playing, carefree, on the green or the clicking of
someone s pen, it takes true willpower to not shift focus. What if there was a simple way to help
students with this? It turns out, there is: gum. Kate Morgan, the author of a gum chewing study in
British Journal of Psychology, proved that Interestingly participants who didn t chew gum performed
slightly better at the beginning of the task but were overtaken by the end. This suggests that chewing
gum helps us focus on tasks that require continuous monitoring over a longer amount of time. It is a
true enigma that despite scientific results, Episcopal still bans chewing gum in school. This year, a
plethora of students have aimlessly drifted through never ending science and math

Positive And Negative Effects Of Playing Video Games
What are the effects of playing video games?
Have you ever thought about playing video games, but your parents don t like you playing them? Well
not all video games are violent, crime ridden, based off of you killing things. Parents also think that
your not socializing with anyone while playing video games.Well There are quite a few games out
there that are based off of gamers socializing with other gamers through the game, there are also
plenty of games that are based off of strategy, reaction times, and there are some that are proven to
help the player become smarter and slow down old age.
Are video games bad for you? People say yes because they promote violence, and can kill brain cells.
Not all video games promote violence but it also depends on the players view of the game, and them
knowing what s real and what s not, and some have been proven to kill brain cells, like some first
person shooter games, but not all them. This graph represents how violent games effects the cingulate
cortex of the brain, the blue shows the decrease in brain cells, and the red shows the increase in brain
cells. People who think that video gamers are not social because they are sitting by themselves, well
the people who think that are not wrong, but they are also not right. Games have the multiplayer
option, which allows you to play video games with other people, and they can also communicate with
them through the game. As stated by http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zcs76fr Games like

Noblest Character In Julius Caesar
I think the noblest character is Antony himself. He always supported Cesar even if it did not seem like
it. He took the side of the murders to survive but never forgot what they had done. An example of this
is at Cesar s funeral he speaks up against Brutus and everyone else because he was smart he knew
everyone there was a supporter of him and Cesar. H was very well with words he managed to turn
supporters of the murders against them and he was very ambitious because he didn t let anyone else in
on it besides octaves. The main reason Antony is the noblest in my book is he had respect for Brutus
even though he killed his friend because he understood that a man is noble to fight for what he
believes in. Those are the reasons that I chose

Surfing Research Paper
Today, I am writing my college essay, an essay that has my very future on the precipice of success and
mediocrity, on surfing. If someone had told me five days ago this would be my topic, I would have
applied to the first dead end job that crossed my path. What did I know about surfing? Five days ago
the answer was nothing, and, proudly, today that answer has changed. Since my first time touching a
surfboard I have ridden my first wave and gotten my first mouthful of sand. The glorious part is that
every time I touch that board I get the biggest, and goofiest, smile on my face even when there is sand
seeping out of it.
In all honestly, surfing is beside the point, surfing has resurrected a part of myself that has been lost
for far too long.

The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain
HUCKLEBERRY FINN by MARK TWAIN
The protagonist of Huckleberry Finn is the most remarkable character Mark Twain created in all his
writings. Huck is both a symbol of the freedom of the natural man and an individual creature with a
conscience and a basic sense of decency that are supposed to be the products of civilization. He is also
a wild teenager who is at odds with society, religion, work, and even his own father, yet the reader
never questions that Huck is a sensitive, loving human being who is in many respects superior to the
figures of adult authority that try to surround him. For these reasons, Huck finds his closest
friendships with boys his own age like Tom Sawyer or with outcasts from the society of his elders like
the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet there is ample evidence of Huck s basic sense of decency, or rather shame, at his resemblance to
his non account father. Huck even accepts the Widow s forging religious Providence in spite of his low
self esteem:
I judged I could see that there was two Providences, and a poor chap would stand considerable show
with the widow s Providence, but if Miss Watson s got him there warn t no help for him any more. I
thought it all out, and reckoned I would belong to the Widow s if he wanted me, though I couldn t
make out how he was a going to be any better off then than what he was before, seeing I was so
ignorant, and so kind of low down and ornery.
Huck is ignorant in the sense of lacking a formal education, but low down and ornery is the
characterization of his father that Huck sees reflected in himself whenever he fidgets in front of a
mirror. In fact, Huck s greatest virtue is his absolute honesty in his self examination, which overlooks
his fundamental decency and compassion. Huck is actually very different from his father, who is
bigoted and ill tempered, as becomes apparent when Pap shows up to reclaim Huck and the money.
Huck probably would be happier in the wild state in which he lives with his father after the latter
abducts him, however. We sense this is the scenes of his self sufficient existence on the island after he

Sexuality And Sexuality Among Older Adults
Human sexuality is a very broad and in some instance a very sensitive subject. Depending on the
audience, it is a topic that may cause uneasiness and awkwardness for some while for others it is a
topic of preference. Although sexuality is a significant part of our modern day culture in movies,
videos, and other celebrity induced trends, it is still a subject that isn t easily discussed. Some will
assert that sexuality only involves the act of sex which is probably the reason there is a sense of
discomfort. This is in fact highly inaccurate, but it is used as a crutch to avoid discussing the topic
altogether. Sexuality is a reality that it plays an important role throughout our lives. It intertwines

As we grow into young adults, we move to a stage of sexual maturity. Sexual maturity is a time where
we can procreate, where there will be in our stamina, and an increase in sexual desires for both men
and women. This is something that happens for everyone after we have surpassed the puberty stage.
All of this is matters because sexual arousal is a physiological function. The physiological aspect of
this cartoon seems to be on the fence of positive and negative. The male seems to be more in a state of
shock by his wife s actions, watching her as she is standing there holding the glasses of wine and the
bottle and her verbiage (attempting to initiate intimacy but reminding him of the backup plan). It
doesn t necessarily convey a negative response from the husband as if he is lacking interest, but he
doesn t seem as enthused as his counterpart which could have a lot to do with the physiological aspect
of him. It is possible that his stamina has declined due to his age or he could have possibly lost the
ability to have sexual arousal for his elderly wife. The physiological response of the husband s actions
or lack thereof can have a domino effect on the psychological dimension of this couple s relationship.
As stated earlier, the husband is necessarily displaying a positive response to his wife s actions. He is
just sitting there with a stunned face which can in return, make the wife feel negatively.

Frankenstein´s Frankenstein And Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
There is something at work in my soul, which I do not understand. 1 Mary Shelley Frankenstein, a
novel written by Mary Shelley, was published in 1818, a first of its kind. The novel is considered to be
the first depiction of science fiction, with infused elements of the Gothic novel and romantic
movement. 2 Today this masterpiece largely influences literature studies and popular culture,
especially in the aspect of film creation. Various adaptations of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein has been
created, but the only motion picture that remains close to the novel is Kenneth Branagh s Mary
Shelley s Frankenstein (1994). The novel and film have made many details conspicuous for
comparison and contrast; details that related to the beginning, the monster s creation, and Elizabeth s
death and rebirth.
The novel and film have alike beginnings, yet there are features changed by Kenneth Branagh. Mary
Shelley s novel specifically started off with a letter written by Walton. The author chose letters from

Kenneth Branagh follows through with creating the same setting as Mary Shelley did in the beginning
of her novel, yet leaves out details about the family s history and the death of Frankenstein s mother.
Similarly, the novel portrayed that Frankenstein did his own work, whereas the film displays that his
work was a continuation of Professor Waldman s. Related to the same scene, Mary Shelley spoke little
about Frankenstein s physical experimentation and how it was done, where in contrast it was the main
focus of the film. One point of clear difference is the ending. Even though Elizabeth dies in both the
novel and the film, Kenneth Branagh takes Elizabeth s character further. He does this by allowing her
to be reborn through Frankenstein s experimentation and by then killing her off as she sets herself on

In summary, the diagnosis of cutaneous tuberculosis is based on clinical features, demonstration of

of importance in laboratory diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, the yield from culture

CenTrust, first called Dade Federal Savings and Loan, was founded in 1934 during the Great

1980s, Miami had a corporate community that any city would envy. The companies were large and
growing. They contributed mightily to local causes. They virtually invented a skyline where none
existed as late as the early 1980s. CenTrust Bank and David Paul gave huge sums of money and much

Thrifts suffered more than mutual funds, because they were clogged with battered Drexel underwritten
issues.
The episode marks the first time a financial institution has been brought down primarily because of its
involvement in the junk bond market. CenTrust reported a $119.5 million loss for its fiscal year ended
Sept. 30, 1989, after writing down a ton of junk and reserving for losses. Under thrift rules, CenTrust

After all this happen, CenTrust planned to sell most of its branches to raise capital and create a

Months later, they planned to merge with Hamilton Holding Co., but neither the sale of its branches

To study the cultural context of Sive and Children of Men means to examine the world of each and the
values and attitude of the people in these worlds. The worlds created in Sive and Children of Men are
very distinct but also have many parallels. Both texts explore the concepts of family, love, fear and

The setting of each text was paramount in informing me about the attitudes and values of that time.
Each text depicts an oppressive and controlled society. Children of Men is set in the year 2027, in the

that give Sive purpose to rebel against society. Both Alfonso Cuaron and John B. Keane have created

Abstract
According to, A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) (4th.Ed.),
Project managers spend the majority of their time communicating with team members and other
project stakeholders, whether they are internal (at all organizational levels) or external to the
organization (PMI, 2008, p. 274). The PMI also suggests that project managers should spend 90% of
their time communicating. Statistics shows that 20% projects are unsuccessful because of ineffective
communication (Figure 1). Figure 1 Unsuccessful projects due to ineffective communication
According to Ralph L Kliem as quoted in Effective Communications for Project Management. (2007,
p. 3), poor communications can have a costly impact on projects as they progress though project life
cycles . (Figure 1.2). Figure 2 Bad communications

Student Nurse Reflective Essay
On July 10th, I received a patient into care at 1915hrs, she was admitted with nausea and vomiting and
later diagnosed with Clostridium difficile. At the beginning of the shift, I checked her vital signs as a
part of my routine assessment I found the patient was tachypneic, tachycardic and had pitting edema.
When asked, the patient said it was normal for her to have high respirations and a high heart rate. The
patient s history and progress notes had no mention of these issues, I notified the primary nurse and
she told me to monitor the situation. The patient s situation did not feel right, I reassessed her and her
respirations continued to increase to 39 resp/min and her O2 saturation was 88% 90% on room air. I
thought to myself What should I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I ll get the nurse and she can tell me what to do. This is an example of my biggest barrier to
transitioning from a student nurse to a registered nurse. I do not have full confidence in my nursing
judgement and I have become somewhat accustomed to my judgement being checked by an instructor
or preceptor In this instance, I trusted my instinct, I put the patient on 2L of oxygen and reassessed the
patient s O2 saturation, it increased to 95%. I knew that because I have had experiences with patients
with low O2 saturation in the past clinical rotations. For the other issues, I was not sure how to move
forward, I notified my preceptor and she stated that the doctor needs to be called for new orders. I was
thinking over the scenario and trying to predict what order the doctor would give, at the time I had no
idea. The doctor ordered Lasix IV push, Ventolin and Atrovent. I knew that Lasix is used to excrete
fluids from the body and Ventolin/Atrovent allow the patient to breathe better. Eventually, I was able
to figure it out; the patient was given too much fluid

The Argument Of The Film About The Past
I will prove that that the argument of the film about the past can inform our understanding of
ourselves today in many different ways. As history can be very influential to a nation, by the way we
recall and decipher those history facts that give us a feeling of place and self as a nation. However we
should recall how those authentic flashbacks can, and regularly are, controlled for different political
influences; because one event history can have a change in the country forever.
Due to these events we know we cannot trust the government because stuff like this can still be
happening under the table and we wouldn t know, therefore that would me the conspiracy is still kept
going to a certain extend. Especially with JFK and Martian Luther

Essay on John Steinbeck
John Steinbeck
#9; John Steinbeck was a famous American author who wrote from the 1920 to the 1940. Steinbeck
was constantly moving across the country trying to succeed as a writer. John Steinbeck lived a life of
constant up and downs, successes and failures before he landed on his feet and became a famous
author.
#9;John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California on February 27, 1902. He was the only son and the
third child of John Ernst Steinbeck and Olive Hamilton. Steinbeck s father owned comfortable
Victorian house in Salinas. John s father managed the Sperry Flour Mill. Things were pretty good for

#9;One of John friends found him a job at Lake Tahoe in June of 1925. His plan was to make enough
money to become a freelance writer in New York City. Low on funds John signed on as a working
berth on a freighter headed to New York is November of 1925. When he arrived in New York John got
a job as a newspaper cub reporter. He finally seemed to a secure job and things seemed alright. After a
couple of months working as a reported John realized that he did not fit this kind of job. quot;Due to
his lack of experience John was never given a chance to show his talent and he was given unimportant
assignments with no value quot;(Morrow 75). Numerous times he failed to show up at work and was
soon after fired.
#9;Barely scraping by John wrote a collection of short stories. He went to two publishing companies
and he was shot down by both. One explained that they would not publish an unknown writer, they
other refused to publish short stories. Heart broken and broke John got a job as a waiter on a
California bound freighter and headed back to his old job at Lake Tahoe.
#9;To just make things a little harder for John when he arrived at his old job, winter was close behind
and he got snowed in for eight months. He took advantage of this time and wrote A Cup of Gold, a
biography of the pirate Henry Morgan. A publishing company called McBride and Company agreed to

American History Website Evaluation Essay
The American Revolution Website Evaluation
The United States revolution is one of the most iconic events in not just American, but world history.
So when performing research on a platform as vast as the internet, proper precautions must be taken. A
well designed and thorough web evaluation should be done to ensure the credibility and integrity of
the website s content. Certain Criteria involve who authored the website, when the website was
created, when it was last updated, who the website was intended for, what types of resources the
website offers, and the sites overall value to the reader.
The website www.ushistory.org is a very informative website that tells about the people and events of
the American Revolution. The website ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another informative and authoritative website about the American Revolution is
www.theamericanrevolution.org. The website is authored and updated by Joseph Logan, who is a self
proclaimed historian and revolutionary enthusiast. He frequently works with schools and universities
to inform and educated students on the revolutionary period. The site was originally just a way for
Logan to document and share his readings about the revolutionary leader John Adams. However, after
only one year, the site started to explode exponentially. Logan read over 200 books about the
revolution and documented everything he could from revolutionary leaders to iconic events. This
extensive research is reflected in the wide amount and detailed writings about the revolution. The last
update took place in February of 2010 however since this type of website is very static in nature, that
update was a fairly recent one. Originally created for middle and high school students, this website
now informs readers of all ages and education levels. The resources and content that this website
offers is beyond valuable. Every single revolutionary leader from Adams to Wilson has a biography
and picture associated with them. The site also has summaries and related documents to all of the
major battles in the war. Including how

  • 2. Ap English Literature Analysis Ali Shuger Mrs. Heim AP English Literature 15 December 2014 Summer Reading Essay: The Handmaid s Tale and Sex Thomas C. Foster, in his novel, How to Read Literature Like a Professor, gives many examples of sex being shown symbolically in literature. He imparts in the reader an idea that sex is everywhere in a typical novel, and that many details in a work most details, even are representative of sex: Tall buildings? Male sexuality. Rolling landscapes? Female sexuality. Stairs? Sexual intercourse. Falling down stairs? Oh my (Foster 136). And, yes sex is truly everywhere in The Handmaid s Tale. The importance of sex in the dystopian society known as Gilead is huge; sex is what the entire Gileadian regime is based around reproduction, more specifically. Symbols of fertility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These flowers serve as a constant reminder of this fertility not just to the reader, but also to the handmaids, whose main purpose is to reproduce. They are everywhere in the setting: a watercolor picture of blue irises (14) in Offred s room; a fanlight of colored glass: flowers red and blue (15) at the end of the hallway just outside that room; the bathroom, papered in small blue flowers, forget me nots, with curtains to match (74); on the dining room table, white cloth, silver, flowers (78); the magic flower, the withered daffodil (115) Offred steals from Serena s Parlor; the starry canopy of silver flowers (233) adorning the Commander s bed. • 3. Relationship Between British And Native Americans The seventeenth century was a prime era for early America, with many historic happenings. From the first British settlers invading on pre claimed Native American land to continual friction between the two, the relationship between the two groups was unstable and dangerous. The Native Americans originally considered trying to become allies with the English, but as time went on, a war would emerge between Natives and the English settlers as to control the land. The English and Native American relationship changed drastically due to two main factors: English seeking religious freedom and economic prosperity. First, English seeking religious freedom caused a shift in the English/Native initial relationship, like the pilgrims did a whole century before. The English wanted to incorporate their Christian relationship into the Natives religion, as said in Document 1. Be it enacted by this present assembly that for laying a surer foundation of the conversion of the Indians to Christian religion, each town, city, borough, and particularly plantation... The English wanted to put a vital part of their everyday life into the lives of the Natives living and thriving around them. Another source, Source 3, was Matthaes Merian, An Indian Massacre of 1622, which was initiated by religion. In 1622, it was apparent to the Indians that the colonists intended to expand their holdings in Virginia. • 4. The Decision Making Of Judges Essay According to Professor J. Peltason, The decision as to who makes the decision affects what decisions will be made. Peltason s words refer to the inescapable human factor present in judicial process, specifically in terms of the decision making of judges. Fairness and impartiality are two of the most important considerations and desires the legal system should aim to achieve. Unfortunately, due to the human factor, impartiality and fairness are ideal goals that are difficult to realize in the system. Specific procedures are in place and meant to be practiced in order to ensure justice in the legal system, and the process varies depending on the type of case. The different types of cases have differing standards of proof, extensions of due process, and proceedings. On the basis of these important differences and of specified proceedings, the efforts toward fairness in the civil process can be evaluated. On Wednesday, October 26th, after meeting with Judge Norma Lindsey s judicial assistant, I waited for further instruction from Bailiff Victor Ramon outside of courtroom 5 3 where a civil trial would take place. He led me to my seat in the courtroom, and I patiently waited for the jury selection to begin. The jurisdiction of the court was state trial court in the civil circuit division, and around 10:15 AM, the session began with Presiding Judge Norma Lindsey. I remained at the courthouse until the session concluded at 5:15 PM that evening. The counsels included the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The values for the f tests and t tests were also calculated in this experiment for the four different types of vegetation as well as for the DBH of species in burned and unburned sites. The percent coverage of woody vegetation in burned sites: 27.8125% ± 29.83%, is higher than that the percent coverage of woody vegetation in unburned sites: 15.25% ± 14.69% (Figure 1). Grasses in burned areas also have higher percent coverage than the percent coverage of grasses in unburned areas: 36.75% ± 30.01% for grasses compared to 5.125% ± 6.49% in the grasses (Figure 1). The percent coverage of annuals perennials in burned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The F test values in canopies (0.031271512) and sub canopies (0.005008424) are both below 0.05 so we can say with 92% confidence that the canopy structures in burned and unburned areas differ and with 97% confidence that the sub canopies vary between the burned and unburned areas. Unburned areas tended to have better developed structures of canopy and sub canopy trees because they were given more time to accumulate compared to recently burned areas which have recently undergone a disturbance. The F test value for DBH (0.022472008) is also below 0.05 so we also have to assume that there is variance in terms of DBH in burned and unburned sites. Unburned sites have larger trees (larger DBH) because these trees had more time to grow compared to trees in recently burned sites. Since the F tests values for the logs (0.076083352) and shrubs (0.340469754) were calculated to be above 0.05, we are not able to draw definitive conclusions on this data, therefore we have to assume that the logs and shrub structures did not vary within the burned and unburned sites (Klowden et al. 2015). Succession is evident in this experiment as there is an overall greater percent coverage of grasses, woody plants, and annuals perennials in burned areas compared to open space. Open space is greatest in unburned areas and there is more open space in unburned areas than burned areas; this is mainly because the woody plants in unburned areas store lots of nutrients within themselves, therefore having less grasses and smaller plants on forest floors (Dickman et al 2014). Five different species of canopy trees were identified in unburned sites compared to only three species of canopy trees identified in burned sites which allows me to conclude that there is more diversity in the species of canopy trees in unburned areas than burned areas. There may have been more types of species found in unburned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. John Winthrop A Model Of Christian Charity Analysis In 1630, Puritan leader John Winthrop delivered perhaps the most famous sermon in American history entitled A Model of Christian Charity, in which he stressed to his fellow Puritans to adopt a sense of unity by setting aside self interest for the sake of the community (Cohen, 2). Winthrop s idea of putting community first has played a major role in American history, but as Winthrop probably knew would happen, his idea of unity has always been at odds with those of self interest; as America is very much a history of these competing forces. The forces of those willing to put aside their own interest for unity, the common good, and for the preservation of the Union vs. those who have pursued their own selfish ways. This paper will offer insights into how Winthrop s remarks have played out during the first half of American history by examining certain individuals and events that have followed along with Winthrop s idea, or those who have posed a challenge to it. Twenty three years before Winthrop gave his sermon conflict over self interest vs. the common good was being played out in Jamestown. Jamestown had been established in 1607 as a purely economic venture as Englishmen traveled to the New World in pursuit of riches, following in the footsteps of the Spanish. These men were consumed with their own self interest of finding gold and becoming rich as opposed to working for the betterment of the colony, causing Jamestown to teeter on the edge of extinction for nearly a ... Red pandas are native to high altitude temperate forests, such as the eastern Himalayas and Burma, as well as parts of Nepal, India, and Tibet. The subspecies Ailurus fulgens fulgens can be found in Nepal and India, while the other, Ailurus fulgens styani, is native to China. There are few differences between the two subspecies; Ailurus fulgens styani is slightly larger and has stronger teeth. The first known account of the red panda took place in a 13th century scroll in China, while the first westerner to document the species was French zoologist Frédéric Cuvier in 1825. This allows Hythloday the narrator and his comrades to convert some of the Utopians into Christians, for the citizens readily accept the one god notion and the practice of sharing communal goods (More 517). No one is condemned due to his or her religious beliefs in Utopia. A fanatic who begins condemning other religions is tried on a charge, not of despising their religion, but of creating a public disorder and is sent into exile (More 518). Does this reflect a society with utopian religious ideals? In Utopia, there are two sects of religious people the ascetic sect whose members do not marry or eat meat, and the sect that allows its members to marry and eat meat. The Utopians regard the second as more sensible, but the first holier. They believe that anyone [who] chose celibacy over marriage and a hard life over a comfortable one on grounds of reason alone is insane; but as these men say they are motivated by religion, the Utopians respect and revere them (More 520). • 27. Chewing Gum Should Be Allowed In School How many times have you been asked to spit out your gum in class? Countless, I bet. Most teachers at Episcopal abide by the policy that gum chewing in class is not allowed. They say it s inconsiderate. They say it s distracting. They say it has no place in the classroom. These teachers, however, are overlooking the countless benefits of gum chewing. Chewing gum in class can help students stay focused, can help students stay active, and can help students perform better overall. Banning gum in school more often than not can cause more harm than good. Gum chewing should be allowed in class. Sitting in five classes a day for times ranging from 55 to 70 minutes, it is a battle of the will to stay on task. Whether distracted by the middle schoolers playing, carefree, on the green or the clicking of someone s pen, it takes true willpower to not shift focus. What if there was a simple way to help students with this? It turns out, there is: gum. Kate Morgan, the author of a gum chewing study in British Journal of Psychology, proved that Interestingly participants who didn t chew gum performed slightly better at the beginning of the task but were overtaken by the end. This suggests that chewing gum helps us focus on tasks that require continuous monitoring over a longer amount of time. It is a true enigma that despite scientific results, Episcopal still bans chewing gum in school. This year, a plethora of students have aimlessly drifted through never ending science and math ... The physiological aspect of this cartoon seems to be on the fence of positive and negative. The male seems to be more in a state of shock by his wife s actions, watching her as she is standing there holding the glasses of wine and the bottle and her verbiage (attempting to initiate intimacy but reminding him of the backup plan). It doesn t necessarily convey a negative response from the husband as if he is lacking interest, but he doesn t seem as enthused as his counterpart which could have a lot to do with the physiological aspect of him. It is possible that his stamina has declined due to his age or he could have possibly lost the ability to have sexual arousal for his elderly wife. The physiological response of the husband s actions or lack thereof can have a domino effect on the psychological dimension of this couple s relationship.
