Whale Shark: A Short Story
A guy named James Richards fell asleep for 20 years one day. I'll get into how he fell asleep later,
but for now let's go on a trip into James's backstory. Now James was a good kid, he was just a little
clumsy and forgetful. He is nice, funny, loving, short, and strong enough so that a blue whale could
fall out of the sky and not kill him or give him serious injuries. When crossing a street, he was
taught not only to look left and right, but to also look up. JUST in case. One day when he was
crossing the street, he looked left and right, BUT FORGOT TO LOOK UP! Now this town here was
a town that when you didn't do something you were taught to do, something terrible happened to
you, like it was some kind of punishment for forgetting to do something important. So when James
forgot to look up, A BLUE WHALE FELL ON HIM! Fact check reporting in. Now you just might
as well know that the blue whale is the largest animal on the WHOLE ENTIRE FACE OF THE
EARTH. OK, let me clarify how much the blue whale weighs. So you know what a whale shark is
right? A whale shark weighs in at about 40,000 Lbs, and the blue whale is just about 10 TIMES
THAT! Weighing in at about 401,000 Lbs. That whale of a whale fell on James's head because he
forgot to look up when crossing a street. Thank you fact check. James got knocked out and fell
asleep for 20 years. During those 20 years James was asleep, so much had changed. What changed
first was that everyone started to eat bugs every

The blue whale is the largest animal ever to have lived on Earth; it is larger than any of the
dinosaurs. The biggest recorded blue whale was a female in the Antarctic Ocean that was 30.5 m
long (more than 3.5 times the length of a double–decker bus and as long as a Boeing 737 plane)
with an estimated weight of 144 tonnes (almost the same as 2,000 men). The tongue alone of a blue
whale can weigh as much as an elephant and an entire football team could stand on it!
The heart of a blue whale is about the size of a VW Beetle car and weighs up to 450kg. The aorta, a
major blood vessel for the heart, is big enough for a human child to crawl through. More facts about

Blue Whales are endangered and their numbers are slowly going up but it doesn't mean that they are
also getting killed. This animal is found North Pacific, Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean. The
blue whale is currently endangered, and it weighs approximately 300,000 pounds or 150 tons! The
blue whale is carnivorous and it can eat about 8,000 pounds of krill a day. The blue whale's life span
can be up to 80 to 110 years pretty similar to humans. The blue whale can be up to 100 feet long but
they are usually are 60–80 feet long. When baby blue whales are born they are usually 20–25 feet
long and can drink up as much as 200 pounds of milk a day. The blue whale is the biggest animal to

Many groups of blue whales are found in several locations around the world. The Sea of Cortez, the
Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Indian Ocean and areas off the coast of California have groups of whales
that reside there. Many of these populations are usually specific or only found near or on these
regions. How do blue whales live? Blue whales live on all the oceans on the world they feed in high
latitudes and they migrate to the tropics to give breed and give birth. How many of these blue
whales still exist or are alive today? Well the worldwide population is unknown, but blue whales are
considered to be endangered according to the U.S endangered species act. There have been many
cases of hunters hunting the blue whale for their large quantities of baleen, blubber, and meat. Even
though blue whales are strongly protected it doesn't guarantee their safety and their numbers are still
not stable. How well can blue whales see and hear? It is nearly unknown how blue whales see or
hear but it scientist expect them to have near perfect hearing and nearly perfect vision especially in
low frequencies and really deep waters where it is dark. What do blue whales eat and how do they

The Blue Whale: Concert Analysis
The Blue Whale is a live jazz venue and art space in Downtown Los Angeles within the Little Tokyo
neighborhood. It is now hosting Steve Coleman & Five Elements. Every night in December, Steve
and his band is performing and running intensive workshops for musicians. The performance on
Saturday, December 5, 2015, was memorable. It featured Steve Coleman on the alto sax, Jonathan
Finlayson playing the trumpet, Maria Grand on the tenor sax, Miles Okazaki on the guitar, Anthony
Tidd on the bass, and Sean Rickman on the drums. The concert was an exemplary example of
postmodern progressive jazz. The performance featured characteristics from the bebop, hard bop,
and cool jazz movements while maintaining its individuality and West African roots. Charlie Parker,
known for his musical genius and contributions to the bebop movement in post WWII America is a
huge influence on Coleman's music. The performance included the use of many characteristics
developed within the bebop movement. The use of combo instrumentation between Coleman,
Grand, and Finlayson; the utilization of the jam–session format which included the ... Show more

A) The organism I chose was the blue whale. The blue whale (scientific name: Balaenoptera
musculus) is the largest marine animal with the weight of about 180 metric tons (180,000 kg). They
weigh around 150–170 metric tons (150,000 kg) together with a length of about 27m (89 feet). The
largest blue whale ever measured was 190 metric tons (190,000 kg), and the longest whale recorded
was 33.6 m (110 feet). It is the biggest animal ever discovered (so far). The head only cover 1/4th
(25%) of their entire body length. Color: Blue whales are blue–gray in color with white patches
covering their body. The undersides of the flippers are lighter in color, and sometimes white, while
the underside of the tail is dark. In Antarctica, the North Pacific, and the North Atlantic, ... Show

Length and Weight: The average length of a blue whale is 75 – 80 feet (23 – 24 meters) and these
long marine mammals can weigh up to 200,000 pounds (90,000 kg). Whales in the southern
hemisphere are generally larger than those in the northern hemisphere. One whale captured in the
southern hemisphere measured 110 feet (33 meters) in length. Females are usually larger than males
of the same age. Fins: A small triangular–shaped dorsal fin is located on the blue whale's back. This
fin measures only one foot in height. The shape and size of the dorsal fin can be very different for
each whale. The whale's flippers are short and the tail is broad and triangular in shape. During the
summer feeding period, a blue whale eats about 40 million krill each day, amounting to about 3,600
kg (7,900 pounds). During the other 8 months of the year, it lives of stored fat not eating
anything. The blue whale feeds by using its long flexible throat grooves to expand its throat and
draws in water laden with the prey, then forces the water out through its baleen plates. The whale
then swallows after the baleen plates filter out the prey organisms (most likely

How Sonar Affects Sea Life
Sonar isn't a good thing to use in the ocean because it kills sea life and affects them and the
scientists in the water, if something goes wrong. Also, sonar is experimenting with bats and
experimenting on animals could go wrong. Sonar is used underwater to find different areas and it
makes it easier for scientists and people who are exploring the different regions underwater. It
creates a loud ping which shoots out and bounces off of different things. There are also two different
types one is Passive Sonar and the other is Active Sonar. Passive Sonar just detects for loud noises
while Active shoots out a ping.
Sonar affects sea life because if researchers are using active sonar the loud ping can make the
animals mostly whales go deaf and then they can't hear for signals from other whales and they could
die. Another way it affects them is because some scientists and researchers use Sonar to find mines
these mines are a danger to the ocean. When they are doing this they place metal scarps and other
garbage along the sea floor. If an animal were to eat one of the metal scarps they could die because
they wouldn't be able to digest it. According to National Geographic animals have been eating
plastic, if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

being locked in a cage which isn't that big. Bats are free animals and should not be put in cages or
experimented on. According to the article What is it Like to be a Bat? the philosopher Thomas
Nagel came to the conclusion that it wasn't possible for a human being to imagine what it was like
to be a bat. This means we don't know how the bat is feeling being stuck in that

Blue Whale Persuasive Speech
The blue whale uses baleen in order to filter the speech. The blue wales are the largest vertebrate
animal. In a study that was reported on May 24 in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Nicholas
Pyenson, the museum's curator of fossil marine mammals, and collaborators Graham Slater at the
University of Chicago and Jeremy Goldbogen at Stanford University, went back and found the
evolution of the size of whales in over thirty million years of history. They discovered that the huge
whales showed up along multiple branches in the family tree roughly two to three million years ago.
A reason for whales having those bigger body sizes is that by the increase of ice sheets located in
Northern Hemisphere, whales had to change the way they ontaimed food

Effects of Illegal Whaling in The Southern Ocean Whale...
Whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary (SOWS) is an ongoing issue despite laws and
regulations prohibiting commercial hunting in these waters. Whaling fleets from Japan use scientific
research to justify continued whaling in the Southern Ocean. Weak enforcement of the regulations
set up in the SOWS has allowed countries, most notably Japan, to continue their hunts with little
interference. If whaling continues in the SOWS, it may lead to irreversible effects to the ecosystem
of the Southern Ocean.
A steady decrease in whale populations can have a top–down effect on many other species in the
ecosystem, especially penguin, seal, and krill. The reasoning is because whales are a keystone
species in the Southern Ocean (Ainley, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Whaling inside the southern ocean is strictly prohibited for commercial purposes; countries are
allowed to kill a certain number of whales per year for scientific research.
Ecosystem
To look at the ecosystem of the Southern Ocean, we will be referencing the food web created by
Laws.
The whales that are going to be focused are species of baleen whales found in the southern ocean.
These species are the fin whale, the blue whale, the sei whale, the humpback whale, and the minke
whale. As shown in the food web, the main food source of these whales is krill. This is important to
note in regards to the issues of prey switching, as well as krill surplus, which will be discussed later
in the research. (WHAT IS A BALEEN WHALE???)
Illegal Whale Hunting
Issue
The issue behind whaling in the Southern Ocean is mainly attributed to the permit of scientific
whaling in the southern ocean. Allowing scientific whaling in the Southern Ocean has sparked a
debate about what is considered research, and what is considered whaling, and many are coming to
realize there is a fine line between the two. Currently, the only country performing scientific
whaling in the Southern Ocean is Japan (Peace, 2010). The problem with Japans scientific whaling
program is that many believe it is being used as a cover for commercial whaling. According to
Peace, most

The Effect of Over Hunting on Blue Whales
The Effect of Over Hunting on Blue Whales
The blue whale is a magnificent creature being the biggest in the world. The blue whale can eat up
to 4 tons of krill in one day, and live up to 90 years old. Blue whales can make sounds and tones that
travel up to 1000 miles away. Blue whales are so big and take up so many resources that have to live
in small groups of one or two called pods. The Blue whales habitat ranges between Madagascar and
Antarctica. In 1904 there used to be close to 400,000 blue whales living on earth, but now due to
over hunting people have put the human race in danger along with the blue whale species.
The history of whaling originates all the way back 3000B.C. Whaling is killing whales for meat and
oil. Huge fleets of whalers did not come around until the 1700's. By the 1930's 50,000 whales were
being killed annually. From 1904 to 1967 360,000 blue whales were killed, that adds up to about
70% of their population. Whales produce up to 3 off spring at most in one year so the bounce back
from a huge killing would take many years. The International Whaling Commission was established
in 1946, to help fight commercial whaling.
The IWC came around to help fight whaling, but they had little effect. In 1970 the Convention of
International Trade of Endangered species put a ban on all whaling. Even though there is a ban on
whaling Norway, Iceland, Japan and the USSR still have whaling fleets but under the name of
"scientific research". The only people who are

Comparing The Israelites And The Puritans
The Puritans believe they are morally superior to everyone else. The Puritans are about to leave
England. "They are Israelites is what they are. They are fleeing Egypt. Good Riddance! Next stop,
land of milk/honey(4)." Vowell uses a simile to compare the Puritans to the Israelites in order to
reveal how the Puritans consider themselves. "The Old Testament Israelites," references specifically
the Israelites that escaped from Egypt in the Book of Exodus. After the population of Jews in Egypt
had become so numerous the Pharaoh feared what they might be able to do and put them into
slavery. The Israelites eventually escaped Egypt by crossing the Red Sea and eventually make it to
land God had gifted them, the land of Canaan. The Puritans compare to the Israelites because they
too felt some religious persecution. Catholic rulers like Mary I persecuted Protestants and had many
executed. The Puritans also flee from a land not as pure as themselves in order to start anew. Cotton
himself tells the Puritans that they are God's chosen, and America is their Canaan. The Israelites
inspire the Puritans to get away. "The Old Testament Israelites are to the Puritans what the blues was
to the Rolling Stones– a source of inspiration, a renewable resource of riffs(2)." Vowell uses an
analogy to compare two unlike things like Puritans and the Rolling Stones. The blues is a genre of
music originating in the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The

Marine mammals are basically aquatic mammals that live in oceans. Some examples of them are
seals, whales, manatees, sea otters and polar bears. All mammals are warm blooded, have hair or
fur, breathe air through their lungs, and nurse their young with milk produced by mammals. They
store extra oxygen in their muscles and blood. They even have more blood than land mammals in

Literary Analysis Of Joyas Voladoras By Brian Doyle
Brian Doyle is a writer that composed an analysis essay on the story Joyas Voladoras. Doyle was
born in 1956, and is the editor for Portland Magazine at the the University of Portland, which is
located in Portland, Oregon. A numerous amount of Brian Doyle's essays have made appearances at
the Best American Essays series. Doyle's essays gained more exposure by being showcased at the
American Scholar, Harper's Orion, Atlantic Monthly, Commonweal, and the Georgia Review. In
Joyas Voladoras, Doyle shows the elegance and character in his style of writing as he gets deeper
and explores the hummingbird. Almost as if it is a riddle, or an enigma. Others say he expands
beyond the meaning of life, he mentions metaphors about hearts, humans, blue whales, other
animals, and of course, the humming bird. Basically, Doyle informs his audience through metaphors
about hearts, life, pain, love and multiple living things, but he also gives us facts about
hummingbirds, as if he was praising them, like if he was giving them the love and appreciation that
they don't see to get. This is could have been done to get a message across, but not just a simple
message, something with a deeper meaning, that i myself or anyone cannot exactly pinpoint. One is
left to just wonder and assume, make what they can out of it through trying to understand what
Doyle was getting at or to comprehend by making it personal. Doyle wrote this essay to explore life
and compare, and to get a point across. Those

My Day With Brand New Eyes Essay
Usually when you go to the movies it doesn't end with you sitting in a parking lot past midnight
listening to your mother tell you the story about how you almost never existed. That's exactly what
happened to me three years ago. After this experience I've seen every day with brand new eyes. The
color blue is deeper, the sound of laughter is sweeter, the stars in the sky are brighter, the world is
bigger and every moment I spend alive feels so much longer. Here's why. This life–altering event
started as any typical day does. My mother and my 15 year old self were bored and she decided to
treat me to a movie. I typed "movies" into the google search bar on my phone and the showings
popped up onto my screen. We were stuck between two movies but we ended up deciding on Life of
Pi. I'm so glad we did because the movie really moved my mother and me. As we were sitting in the
cold theatre, we were blown away by the film. The story took place in India and the visuals were
stunning; a young boy and a Bengal tiger stuck on a raft in an endless ocean, humpback whales,
tycoons, a tropical island and so much more. On top of the visuals, the message was very powerful.
The whole movie was a philosophical story told to an atheist reporter by an Indian man debating
whether God was real or not.
Once the movie was over I felt so enlightened and judging by what my mother was about to tell me,
so did she. It was dark outside and the parking lot was mostly empty. We got in the car, clicked on

Environmental Impact upon the Oceans and International...
Environmental Impact upon the Oceans and International Law When looking at the environment of
the Earth's oceans, it is important to realize that the entire ocean is composed of a different base
material than the rest of the mass of the world, this of course, being water. While on the surface this
seems elementary, the complications when looking at the environmental impacts occurring can
cause serious complications that can affect the problem immensely. Acid rain, for instance, can
effective drop the pH of the water to levels capable of causing large fish kills. Global warming can
increase the water temperatures around tropical reefs in the summer easily to levels far beyond the
tolerable range of the reef forming stony corals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The oceans have evolved over the millennia to handle this small amount of nutrients with relative
ease. The waste produced by the bio–load of the seas is primarily emitted as ammonia and
ammonium, which get broken down through a series of steps involving the bacterium nitrosomos
and nitrobacter. The end result is a much less toxic form of nitrogen called nitrates. A third,
anaerobic, bacteria is able to alter the nitrates into nitrogen gas which then is able to safely leave the
system and enter the atmosphere. This bacteria is only able to live in the area of the seabed that is
deep enough to prevent oxygen from reaching, yet shallow enough for the water containing these
nitrates to permeate. This limitation in territory naturally limits the amounts of nitrates able to be
broken down naturally by the oceans. The influx of nitrates, phosphates, and silicates from
pesticides and chemical wastes cause the ecological balance to become disrupted. The microalgaes
that live on the reefs can grow extremely fast in a relatively short period of time when given the
right conditions. The level of nitrogen that has entered the oceans has increased by over 40% when
compared to ammoniums. This increase has been attributed to the steadily increasing use of fossil
fuels, and the atmosphere's inability to deal with the emissions (AAAS, 1). The increase in nutrients
can create the ideal conditions for these organisms to flourish. Once

Presently, it is estimated that there are about 5,000–12,000 blue whales remaining worldwide, with
the largest concentration of about 2,000 blue whales in the North Pacific from Southern California
up to the Gulf of Alaska. Blue Whale is currently one of the world's most endangered species due to
massive commercial whaling during the 1900s. Blue whales were hunted worldwide, 99% of their
population was killed by whalers, reducing the population to almost extinction. Whalers used their
oil to make products such as soap, and cosmetics. But whaling is no longer a threat because in 1966
the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling for blue whales in all the
world's oceans. Today, the primary threats to blue whale are vessel strikes and noise pollution.
Along the coast of California blue whales are dying from ship strikes every year. Blue whales
migrate to the offshores of California to feed on krill. Unfavorably for blue whales this feeding area
overlaps with one of the busiest shipping lanes in California. Ship strikes have been determined to
be a threat on the population causing slowed growth and a declined in the population. Recent studies
from scientists at Cornell University in the US, demonstrate that noise pollution from military sonar
activity is having a negative impact on the way blue whales act and communicate. Noise pollution

Instances where Music Has Been Influenced by Politics
Music has always been tied to what has been happening to in the world around its creator. This is
true for classical music, as well as popular (pop) music. Pop music is music that is mass marketed
and shared primarily by recordings. The Emergence of pop music occurred because of the invention
of three recording devices, the phonograph cylinder (1878), the flat gramophone record (1887), and
the Player piano (1896). Musicians like James Reese Europe had to find ways to allow himself (and
other African Americans) able to perform, as well as get his music heard. Shostakovich had to work
within Stalin's Social Realism. Ravel's "La Valse" is a reaction the War in Europe. In many ways has
music has been influenced by the politics of the time these are the three composers I am going to
focus on. James Reese Europe lived from 1880 –1919. He studied music theory and violin from the
Assistant Director of the United States Marine Corps Band. When he was 22 he moved to New
York, where he was able to get some work but not a whole lot. This was due to his African heritage.
So, he responded by creating the Clef Club. The Clef Club was a multipurpose organization; it
served as social club, a booking agency, and a trade union for African American musicians in New
York City. Through this club, he was able to stage concerts at Carnegie Hall with 125 piece
orchestras. In 1913 the Castles, who were a married couple who watered down the elaborate

Argumentative Essay On Seatold
"Cultures have long heard wisdom in non–human voices: Apollo, god of music, medicine and
knowledge, came to Delphi in the form of a dolphin. But dolphins, which fill the oceans with
blipping and chirping, and whales, which mew and caw in ultramarine jazz – a true rhapsody in blue
– are hunted to the edge of silence." Jay Griffiths, an award winning british writer, wrote an article
speaking out about the assault on the riches of nature, in which she speaks of the damage we've
done to marine life. From the time the first humans evolved, we have utilised whales to sustain
ourselves. We used their blubber, meat and bones to survive. Even today, we still use them. But
differently. Today, we stick them in tanks like a human in a bathtub and call it an amusement park.

all orcas have, and that they have lots of room to stretch and move, and floating at the top of the

Blue Whale Adaptations
Despite its abundance, in quantity the blue whale is now considered to be an endangered species.
Blue Whales have been hunted for centuries, they can also be found in most oceans and because of
this they make an easy target for hunters. A unique feature of the Blue Whale is that they are the
largest mammal in existence they can grow up to 30 meters long and weigh up to 190 tons. Due to
its size they are the hunter's ultimate prize hence why they are endangered. Despite its size, its diet
consists of some of the smallest marine life such as, krill, shrimp and so on.
(Zach's – Introduction.)
There are at least three distinct subspecies. The Blue Whale is found in the Indian Ocean and South
Pacific Ocean. Its habitat prefers the open ocean but can sometimes be seen offshore of coastal
states. The change in ocean temperature would also affect the blue whale's food supply. Stated are
three main regions for the Blue Whale which are North Pacific & Atlantic also The Southern
Hemisphere. It has many adaptations that allow it to survive in its environment. It does not allow it
to sleep. If it slept, it would drown. Instead, it takes short naps instead of long slumbers. Has an

Rhetorical Analysis On Joyas
Bethany Davis
First Year Writing
September 27, 2012 The Heart of "Joyas Voladoras"
"In our time together, you claimed a special place in my heart, one I'll carry with me forever and
that no one could ever replace."–Nicholas Sparks (Dear John).
The heart is a very abstruse thing. Scientifically, know the differences between a human's heart and
a dog's heart. They know how many hearts a worm has and how a bacterium has none. Doctors
know how to perform surgery on the heart without killing a person while a scientist uses a dead
person heart to figure out how to prevent premature death. But other than that, the heart is a
mystery. Why does the heart hurt when we lose someone we love? Why does it grow when ... Show

It's what allows us to breathe, feel, hurt, and love. It's the irrational part of humans that makes us
love someone that can hurt us, or hurt someone that loves us. It also the same organ that allows huge
beasts to find one mate and spend the rest of their lives with them. "No living being is without
interior liquid motion. We all churn inside." It is hard to find anything these days that aren't directed
towards the heart. Foods that are good for your heart, books that warm the heart, movies that stir the
heart, the list is endless. Doyle uses this particularly in his last paragraph.
"You can brick up your heart as stout and tight and hard and cold and impregnable as you possibly
can and down it comes in an instant, felled by a woman's second glance, a child's apple breath...."
He continues on using examples from everyday life that stir the heart and allow us to feel, to be
human.
The essay starts out with facts about the hummingbird and all that it's about. Doyle gives a list of all
the hummingbirds that are now extinct, "a brilliant music stilled." He tells us that if a hummingbird
were to stop eating for too long, if they were to stop flying for any amount of time, if it were too
cold outside, if it has a heart attack, an aneurysm, or a rupture, the hummingbird can die. I as a
reader paused there and considered that for a second. One never does pause to think about how such

Animal Culture
Throughout history the argument of whether or not animals have a culture has been disputed. A
popular opinion during Charles Darwin's time was that animals were actually soulless because they
did not have facial expressions (Sterelny, 1990). Darwin disproved this through his analysis of facial
expressions in primates, implying that chimps have a culture (Sterelny, 1990). This has led to many
more studies of culture in animals and even now the topic of animal culture is one that is heavily
debated.
In this paper, I will attempt to answer the question: do animal, specifically whales, have a culture?
First, I will define what culture means in the scientific world, then a discussion about the viewpoints

He witnessed birds communicating with each other through their songs (Sterelny, 1990). This is
very similar to what is observed in the songs of whales. The songs of whales is an example
language, the song of the humpback whale includes whistles, low grunts and rattles. It is sung in a
long cycle that can range anywhere form 30 minutes to an hour. It is normally the males that sing
during to mating season to attract females and also fend off any males that may be in the area
(Whitehead and Rendell, 2014). These songs are also not exclusive to humpback whales, they are
also seen in many species such as blue whales, humpback whales and fin whales (Whitehead and
Rendell, 2014). The song of the bowhead whale is actually very similar to humpback whales. They
both have similar cycles, a wide range of frequency as well as the loudest of songs ever recorded.
However one main difference between the two is that humpback whales only sing one songs at a
time and bowhead whales can sing three (Whitehead and Rendell, 2014), they have differences in
their languages just as humans do. Language is defined as a method of communication that is either
spoken or written. Similar to what we discussed in class about communication, a sender is sending
signal to the receiver, which is then interpreted, and then there is a response, which may be another
signal (Personal communication from Dr. Andy Horn, Behavioral Ecology lecture; unreferenced). In
this case the signal is the song of the whale. Therefore based on that we can consider the song of
whales to be a language as

WHALES
Marine biology is the scientific study of aquatic organisms, their characteristics and behaviors [1].
Even though everyone on the planet is aware of the fact that about 70 percent of the Earth's surface
is covered with water, it is believed that only 5 to 10 percent of the oceans have been explored yet
[1]. There are hundreds of thousands of marine creatures that can be found underwater with unique
features. Ocean life is very diverse and is categorized into different groups, such as sharks,
mammals, reptiles etc. Of them, whales fall into the category of mammals and are considered as one
of the most magnificent and amazing creatures that have ever lived in the sea. In this essay, I am
going to sketch the evolution ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most common of these is the blue whale. Being the largest animal on the Earth, blue whale has
a length of around 100 feet and weighs around 150 tons [3]. Their tongue alone can weigh as much
as an Elephant. They are called blue whales because of having grey–blue color skin and light spots
on it. They usually swim with the speed of 5 miles per hour, but can make it up to 30 miles per hour
when required. They sleep while sleeping and at this time they use only half of their brain [3].
Examples of toothed whales include the sperm whale, killer whale, bottlenose whale, and other
species of dolphins. Of these, the most common is killer whale. Killer whales are considered as the
biggest dolphin on the planet as they measure up to 26 feet. They are highly intelligent and social
creatures. They are named as "killer" because they kill other whales, and not because they kill

Brian Doyle's 'Joyas Voladoras'
Brian Doyle, the author of many stories including The Wet Engine, is Canadian born and attended
Carleton University. He was married and had a son. His son, Liam, was born missing a chamber in
his heart. Doyle has written many stories and passages that are about the heart and contain
metaphors and beautiful phrases about the heart. In Brian Doyle's short story, "Joyas Voladoras," he
portrays the idea that the heart and life are absolutely beautiful things and are not to be taken for
granted. Life can be lived at a slow and steady pace and last a while or it can be lived fast and
dangerous but end quicker. There are many different ways to live life. Two animals live completely
opposite lives, one very quick and the other quite slow. Doyle states, ... Show more content on

The heart holds so much:love, memories, emotions, etc. It is a beautiful object that cannot be taken
for granted. Doyle states in the story, "So much held in a heart in a lifetime, So much held in a heart
in a day, an hour, a moment." (Doyle). Here he is telling the reader that everything should count,
every moment of life should count. The heart is one of the most beautiful things in the world, it is
capable of so much emotion, and it is what keeps creatures living. It does not matter the speed
which life is lived at as long as the moments in life should not be taken for granted, but are lived to
their fullest to be remembered forever. Throughout "Joyas Voladoras" the idea that the heart is
valuable and beautiful is shown in this short story a multitude of times through the metaphors. Life
is promoted as such a glorious thing and not everything gets to live for as long as it would like,
factors play in and life ends. Muscles and organs fail, and the body can fix itself, but when the heart
fails or breaks it can no longer be fixed. Doyle shows the reader that the size or shape of a creature
does not matter and that we are all connected through the one thing that we have in common: a

The Paradox Of The Heart In 'Joyas Voladoras'
The Paradox of The Heart The paradox of the heart is that it allows us to live and feel the most
beautiful things, to love and be loved; it also allows us to feel the deepest pains, the ones where it
feels like we can no longer breathe and are grasping for air. It's incredible how one small organ can
have such great power, to carry the weight of life and death. Bryan Doyle's short story, "Joyas
Voladoras," starts off with facts and metaphors of a hummingbird's heart. The story then goes into a
brief description about whales and finally concludes with people. Doyle draws a connection
between hummingbirds, whales, and humans, and it's that they all have a heart. He expresses the
significance of the heart and the role it plays in each individual's life through the use of facts,
similes, metaphors, imagery and personification. Doyle even breaks the barriers between reader and
writer by switching points of views and incorporating the reader by drawing emotions and evoking
thoughts. Bryan Doyle starts off by throwing information to the reader about the hummingbird and
its "pencil eraser of a heart." He goes off explaining it's many talents such as "they can fly
backward," or "they can fly more than five hundred miles without pausing to rest." Doyle uses these
facts to engage the reader and to allow them to think about their talents and what they are able to do.
The author then cuts the hummingbird by saying that "the price of their ambition is a life closer to
death; they

blue whales were so large and whalers got paid top dollar for these mammals they were continually
being hunted by competitors until near extinction" (Why Are Blue Whales Endangered, 2017). Also,
pollution of the whales environment can harm them as well. When a boat has an oil leak or when a
boat hits a whale it can greatly affect them. The responses to this problem have also been driven as
well because people finally realized that there was a problem. Humans contribute to a large part of
the problem as you can see and this leads us to the pressures. It is clear that Blue Whales were very

The actions can be both large and small and some can even be negative. In the 1930's agreements
were made to make a change and to minimize the killings of whales. Actions weren't really taken
right away but people started to become more aware of the issue. Fleeks states that, "Blue whales
gained endangered status in 1986 by the World Conservation Union and they are still on the list
today"(Fleeks, 2014). Another Organization arose to make a difference for the lives of whales called
The International Whaling Commission. The World Wildlife Foundation describes it as, "The
International Whaling Commission is the body charged with regulating whale and addressing the
vast number of other threats to whales, dolphins and porpoises in our oceans, such as shipping,
climate change and bycatch" (Henry, N.D). The World Wildlife Foundation is the organization that
works to make the International Whaling Commission more effective. One tool used to protect the
whales is the use of satellite tracking. The World Wildlife Foundation is using satellites to see what
specific routes whales are using. By tracking the whales they are able to discuss possible areas of
protected areas. These policies put in place have saved the lives of whales and without them who
knows what our oceans would look like. An article written by editor Rebeccah Dean is stressing the

Animal Adaptions : The Blue Whale
Animal Adaptions – The Blue Whale Introduction The Balaenoptera Musculus, or commonly
known as the blue whale, is a carnivorous animal of the order Cetacae and is classified as Baleen
due to its morphological structure. It is found in most cold, temperate and coastal waters, as well as
deeper oceans, therefore its geographical location varies to all major oceans (Refer to diagram 1.0).
The reason for the vastness in their distribution is mostly due to the migration path of a blue whale,
which they have adapted to survive in their environment. (Wwf.panda.org, 2015) Due to this, the
main purpose of this report is to discuss the various attributes of whales which have assisted in their
survival and adaptation in their environments. This includes morphological adaptations such as size,
mouth structure, and their body shape; physiological adaptations such as Respiration and their
blubber. The report also focuses on behavioural adaptations which discuss migration, and their use
of communication. The issues regarding the destruction of whale's habitats due to the increase of
ships on today's oceans and climate change is also discussed in this report as well as possible
solution which could prevent the possibility of extinction for the Blue Whale. Adaptations
Morphology Morphology refers to the structure and form of an organism, therefore the two features
which are detailed in this report are the mouth and the unique body shape of the blue whale. –Mouth

Whales, such as killer whales, are unfairly stereotyped as dangerous or terrifying animals. From
1999–2010 marine mammals accounted for fifteen deaths, two of the deaths were by a single killer
whale in captivity where conditions are not the greatest for whales (Rose). Although there is
information on marine mammal related deaths there is no specific data on whale related deaths,
meaning that the deaths could have come from another species. Whales play an important role in the
flow of aquatic ecosystems. Blue Whales consume about forty trillion krill per day on average. By
consuming that krill they are doing their part of stabilizing the oceanic ecosystem. Scientists are also
learning more about whales and getting better understandings of their species, the cetacean. By
performing biological studies and many observations scientists are able to learn about whale
communication, intelligence, as well as environmental impacts. When scientists better understand

Blue whales are marine mammals which belong to the baleen whales. Other types of marine
mammals would consist of: dolphins, sea lions, walruses, gray whales, etc. Through research it is
noted that blue whales belong to the Phylum Chordata, since they are vertebrates and bilaterally
symmetrical. All these aspects take part in how scientists decide to name these animals
Range and Habitat Blue whales used to be very copious in all of the main oceans in the world until
around the 18–20th century when many of the began to be killed off. They were mainly killed off so
their large amounts of blubber and meat, which was used to make raw materials and products. These
mammals can still be seen swimming in many oceans, like the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and
even the Antarctic Ocean, the numbers of blue whales have gone down, which has slowly made
them to be seen as endangered species. However, during spring/summer they have the tendency to
migrate to the Arctic Ocean. Blue whales spend their lives in different oceans in the world.

  • 2. Whale Shark: A Short Story A guy named James Richards fell asleep for 20 years one day. I'll get into how he fell asleep later, but for now let's go on a trip into James's backstory. Now James was a good kid, he was just a little clumsy and forgetful. He is nice, funny, loving, short, and strong enough so that a blue whale could fall out of the sky and not kill him or give him serious injuries. When crossing a street, he was taught not only to look left and right, but to also look up. JUST in case. One day when he was crossing the street, he looked left and right, BUT FORGOT TO LOOK UP! Now this town here was a town that when you didn't do something you were taught to do, something terrible happened to you, like it was some kind of punishment for forgetting to do something important. So when James forgot to look up, A BLUE WHALE FELL ON HIM! Fact check reporting in. Now you just might as well know that the blue whale is the largest animal on the WHOLE ENTIRE FACE OF THE EARTH. OK, let me clarify how much the blue whale weighs. So you know what a whale shark is right? A whale shark weighs in at about 40,000 Lbs, and the blue whale is just about 10 TIMES THAT! Weighing in at about 401,000 Lbs. That whale of a whale fell on James's head because he forgot to look up when crossing a street. Thank you fact check. James got knocked out and fell asleep for 20 years. During those 20 years James was asleep, so much had changed. What changed first was that everyone started to eat bugs every ... The biggest recorded blue whale was a female in the Antarctic Ocean that was 30.5 m long (more than 3.5 times the length of a double–decker bus and as long as a Boeing 737 plane) with an estimated weight of 144 tonnes (almost the same as 2,000 men). The tongue alone of a blue whale can weigh as much as an elephant and an entire football team could stand on it! The heart of a blue whale is about the size of a VW Beetle car and weighs up to 450kg. The aorta, a major blood vessel for the heart, is big enough for a human child to crawl through. More facts about blue whales. HOW BIG IS THE CALF OF A BLUE WHALE? Blue whales are pregnant ... • 5. The Blue Whale: Concert Analysis The Blue Whale is a live jazz venue and art space in Downtown Los Angeles within the Little Tokyo neighborhood. It is now hosting Steve Coleman & Five Elements. Every night in December, Steve and his band is performing and running intensive workshops for musicians. The performance on Saturday, December 5, 2015, was memorable. It featured Steve Coleman on the alto sax, Jonathan Finlayson playing the trumpet, Maria Grand on the tenor sax, Miles Okazaki on the guitar, Anthony Tidd on the bass, and Sean Rickman on the drums. The concert was an exemplary example of postmodern progressive jazz. The performance featured characteristics from the bebop, hard bop, and cool jazz movements while maintaining its individuality and West African roots. Charlie Parker, known for his musical genius and contributions to the bebop movement in post WWII America is a huge influence on Coleman's music. The performance included the use of many characteristics developed within the bebop movement. • 6. Blue Whale Research Paper A) The organism I chose was the blue whale. The blue whale (scientific name: Balaenoptera musculus) is the largest marine animal with the weight of about 180 metric tons (180,000 kg). They weigh around 150–170 metric tons (150,000 kg) together with a length of about 27m (89 feet). The largest blue whale ever measured was 190 metric tons (190,000 kg), and the longest whale recorded was 33.6 m (110 feet). It is the biggest animal ever discovered (so far). The head only cover 1/4th (25%) of their entire body length. Color: Blue whales are blue–gray in color with white patches covering their body. The undersides of the flippers are lighter in color, and sometimes white, while the underside of the tail is dark. In Antarctica, the North Pacific, and the North Atlantic, ... Length and Weight: The average length of a blue whale is 75 – 80 feet (23 – 24 meters) and these long marine mammals can weigh up to 200,000 pounds (90,000 kg). Whales in the southern hemisphere are generally larger than those in the northern hemisphere. One whale captured in the southern hemisphere measured 110 feet (33 meters) in length. Females are usually larger than males of the same age. Fins: A small triangular–shaped dorsal fin is located on the blue whale's back. This fin measures only one foot in height. The shape and size of the dorsal fin can be very different for each whale. The whale's flippers are short and the tail is broad and triangular in shape. During the summer feeding period, a blue whale eats about 40 million krill each day, amounting to about 3,600 kg (7,900 pounds). During the other 8 months of the year, it lives of stored fat not eating anything. The blue whale feeds by using its long flexible throat grooves to expand its throat and draws in water laden with the prey, then forces the water out through its baleen plates. • 7. How Sonar Affects Sea Life Sonar isn't a good thing to use in the ocean because it kills sea life and affects them and the scientists in the water, if something goes wrong. Also, sonar is experimenting with bats and experimenting on animals could go wrong. Sonar is used underwater to find different areas and it makes it easier for scientists and people who are exploring the different regions underwater. It creates a loud ping which shoots out and bounces off of different things. There are also two different types one is Passive Sonar and the other is Active Sonar. Passive Sonar just detects for loud noises while Active shoots out a ping. Sonar affects sea life because if researchers are using active sonar the loud ping can make the animals mostly whales go deaf and then they can't hear for signals from other whales and they could die. Another way it affects them is because some scientists and researchers use Sonar to find mines these mines are a danger to the ocean. When they are doing this they place metal scarps and other garbage along the sea floor. If an animal were to eat one of the metal scarps they could die because they wouldn't be able to digest it. According to National Geographic animals have been eating plastic, if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They use their hearing to find food and other things. It will seem as though "we are seeing but without using our eyes" according to discovery education. In the video Super Sonar it shows a bat being locked in a cage which isn't that big. Bats are free animals and should not be put in cages or experimented on. • 8. Blue Whale Persuasive Speech The blue whale uses baleen in order to filter the speech. The blue wales are the largest vertebrate animal. In a study that was reported on May 24 in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Nicholas Pyenson, the museum's curator of fossil marine mammals, and collaborators Graham Slater at the University of Chicago and Jeremy Goldbogen at Stanford University, went back and found the evolution of the size of whales in over thirty million years of history. They discovered that the huge whales showed up along multiple branches in the family tree roughly two to three million years ago. • 10. Effects of Illegal Whaling in The Southern Ocean Whale... Whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary (SOWS) is an ongoing issue despite laws and regulations prohibiting commercial hunting in these waters. Whaling fleets from Japan use scientific research to justify continued whaling in the Southern Ocean. Weak enforcement of the regulations set up in the SOWS has allowed countries, most notably Japan, to continue their hunts with little interference. If whaling continues in the SOWS, it may lead to irreversible effects to the ecosystem of the Southern Ocean. A steady decrease in whale populations can have a top–down effect on many other species in the ecosystem, especially penguin, seal, and krill. The reasoning is because whales are a keystone species in the Southern Ocean (Ainley, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary is located in waters surrounding Antarctica. (NEED CITE) Whaling inside the southern ocean is strictly prohibited for commercial purposes; countries are allowed to kill a certain number of whales per year for scientific research. Ecosystem To look at the ecosystem of the Southern Ocean, we will be referencing the food web created by Laws. The whales that are going to be focused are species of baleen whales found in the southern ocean. These species are the fin whale, the blue whale, the sei whale, the humpback whale, and the minke whale. As shown in the food web, the main food source of these whales is krill. This is important to note in regards to the issues of prey switching, as well as krill surplus, which will be discussed later in the research. (WHAT IS A BALEEN WHALE???) Illegal Whale Hunting Issue The issue behind whaling in the Southern Ocean is mainly attributed to the permit of scientific whaling in the southern ocean. Allowing scientific whaling in the Southern Ocean has sparked a debate about what is considered research, and what is considered whaling, and many are coming to realize there is a fine line between the two. Currently, the only country performing scientific whaling in the Southern Ocean is Japan (Peace, 2010). The problem with Japans scientific whaling

  • 12. The Effect of Over Hunting on Blue Whales The Effect of Over Hunting on Blue Whales The blue whale is a magnificent creature being the biggest in the world. The blue whale can eat up to 4 tons of krill in one day, and live up to 90 years old. Blue whales can make sounds and tones that travel up to 1000 miles away. Blue whales are so big and take up so many resources that have to live in small groups of one or two called pods. The Blue whales habitat ranges between Madagascar and Antarctica. In 1904 there used to be close to 400,000 blue whales living on earth, but now due to over hunting people have put the human race in danger along with the blue whale species. The history of whaling originates all the way back 3000B.C. Whaling is killing whales for meat and oil. Huge fleets of whalers did not come around until the 1700's. By the 1930's 50,000 whales were being killed annually. From 1904 to 1967 360,000 blue whales were killed, that adds up to about 70% of their population. Whales produce up to 3 off spring at most in one year so the bounce back from a huge killing would take many years. The International Whaling Commission was established in 1946, to help fight commercial whaling. The IWC came around to help fight whaling, but they had little effect. In 1970 the Convention of International Trade of Endangered species put a ban on all whaling. Even though there is a ban on whaling Norway, Iceland, Japan and the USSR still have whaling fleets but under the name of "scientific research". The only people who are ... • 13. Comparing The Israelites And The Puritans The Puritans believe they are morally superior to everyone else. The Puritans are about to leave England. "They are Israelites is what they are. They are fleeing Egypt. Good Riddance! Next stop, land of milk/honey(4)." Vowell uses a simile to compare the Puritans to the Israelites in order to reveal how the Puritans consider themselves. "The Old Testament Israelites," references specifically the Israelites that escaped from Egypt in the Book of Exodus. After the population of Jews in Egypt had become so numerous the Pharaoh feared what they might be able to do and put them into slavery. The Israelites eventually escaped Egypt by crossing the Red Sea and eventually make it to land God had gifted them, the land of Canaan. The Puritans compare to the Israelites because they too felt some religious persecution. Catholic rulers like Mary I persecuted Protestants and had many executed. The Puritans also flee from a land not as pure as themselves in order to start anew. Cotton himself tells the Puritans that they are God's chosen, and America is their Canaan. The Israelites inspire the Puritans to get away. "The Old Testament Israelites are to the Puritans what the blues was to the Rolling Stones– a source of inspiration, a renewable resource of riffs(2)." Vowell uses an analogy to compare two unlike things like Puritans and the Rolling Stones. The blues is a genre of music originating in the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The emotion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Literary Analysis Of Joyas Voladoras By Brian Doyle Brian Doyle is a writer that composed an analysis essay on the story Joyas Voladoras. Doyle was born in 1956, and is the editor for Portland Magazine at the the University of Portland, which is located in Portland, Oregon. A numerous amount of Brian Doyle's essays have made appearances at the Best American Essays series. Doyle's essays gained more exposure by being showcased at the American Scholar, Harper's Orion, Atlantic Monthly, Commonweal, and the Georgia Review. In Joyas Voladoras, Doyle shows the elegance and character in his style of writing as he gets deeper and explores the hummingbird. Almost as if it is a riddle, or an enigma. Others say he expands beyond the meaning of life, he mentions metaphors about hearts, humans, blue whales, other animals, and of course, the humming bird. Basically, Doyle informs his audience through metaphors about hearts, life, pain, love and multiple living things, but he also gives us facts about hummingbirds, as if he was praising them, like if he was giving them the love and appreciation that they don't see to get. This is could have been done to get a message across, but not just a simple message, something with a deeper meaning, that i myself or anyone cannot exactly pinpoint. One is left to just wonder and assume, make what they can out of it through trying to understand what Doyle was getting at or to comprehend by making it personal. • 16. My Day With Brand New Eyes Essay Usually when you go to the movies it doesn't end with you sitting in a parking lot past midnight listening to your mother tell you the story about how you almost never existed. That's exactly what happened to me three years ago. After this experience I've seen every day with brand new eyes. The color blue is deeper, the sound of laughter is sweeter, the stars in the sky are brighter, the world is bigger and every moment I spend alive feels so much longer. Here's why. This life–altering event started as any typical day does. My mother and my 15 year old self were bored and she decided to treat me to a movie. I typed "movies" into the google search bar on my phone and the showings popped up onto my screen. We were stuck between two movies but we ended up deciding on Life of Pi. I'm so glad we did because the movie really moved my mother and me. As we were sitting in the cold theatre, we were blown away by the film. The story took place in India and the visuals were stunning; a young boy and a Bengal tiger stuck on a raft in an endless ocean, humpback whales, tycoons, a tropical island and so much more. On top of the visuals, the message was very powerful. The whole movie was a philosophical story told to an atheist reporter by an Indian man debating whether God was real or not. Once the movie was over I felt so enlightened and judging by what my mother was about to tell me, so did she. It was dark outside and the parking lot was mostly empty. We got in the car, clicked on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Environmental Impact upon the Oceans and International Law When looking at the environment of the Earth's oceans, it is important to realize that the entire ocean is composed of a different base material than the rest of the mass of the world, this of course, being water. While on the surface this seems elementary, the complications when looking at the environmental impacts occurring can cause serious complications that can affect the problem immensely. Acid rain, for instance, can effective drop the pH of the water to levels capable of causing large fish kills. Global warming can increase the water temperatures around tropical reefs in the summer easily to levels far beyond the tolerable range of the reef forming stony corals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The oceans have evolved over the millennia to handle this small amount of nutrients with relative ease. The waste produced by the bio–load of the seas is primarily emitted as ammonia and ammonium, which get broken down through a series of steps involving the bacterium nitrosomos and nitrobacter. The end result is a much less toxic form of nitrogen called nitrates. A third, anaerobic, bacteria is able to alter the nitrates into nitrogen gas which then is able to safely leave the system and enter the atmosphere. This bacteria is only able to live in the area of the seabed that is deep enough to prevent oxygen from reaching, yet shallow enough for the water containing these nitrates to permeate. This limitation in territory naturally limits the amounts of nitrates able to be broken down naturally by the oceans. The influx of nitrates, phosphates, and silicates from pesticides and chemical wastes cause the ecological balance to become disrupted. The microalgaes that live on the reefs can grow extremely fast in a relatively short period of time when given the right conditions. The level of nitrogen that has entered the oceans has increased by over 40% when compared to ammoniums. This increase has been attributed to the steadily increasing use of fossil fuels, and the atmosphere's inability to deal with the emissions (AAAS, 1). The increase in nutrients can create the ideal conditions for these organisms to flourish. Once ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Blue Whale is currently one of the world's most endangered species due to massive commercial whaling during the 1900s. Blue whales were hunted worldwide, 99% of their population was killed by whalers, reducing the population to almost extinction. Whalers used their oil to make products such as soap, and cosmetics. But whaling is no longer a threat because in 1966 the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling for blue whales in all the world's oceans. Today, the primary threats to blue whale are vessel strikes and noise pollution. Along the coast of California blue whales are dying from ship strikes every year. Blue whales migrate to the offshores of California to feed on krill. Unfavorably for blue whales this feeding area overlaps with one of the busiest shipping lanes in California. Ship strikes have been determined to be a threat on the population causing slowed growth and a declined in the population. This is true for classical music, as well as popular (pop) music. Pop music is music that is mass marketed and shared primarily by recordings. The Emergence of pop music occurred because of the invention of three recording devices, the phonograph cylinder (1878), the flat gramophone record (1887), and the Player piano (1896). Musicians like James Reese Europe had to find ways to allow himself (and other African Americans) able to perform, as well as get his music heard. Shostakovich had to work within Stalin's Social Realism. Ravel's "La Valse" is a reaction the War in Europe. In many ways has music has been influenced by the politics of the time these are the three composers I am going to focus on. James Reese Europe lived from 1880 –1919. He studied music theory and violin from the Assistant Director of the United States Marine Corps Band. When he was 22 he moved to New York, where he was able to get some work but not a whole lot. This was due to his African heritage. So, he responded by creating the Clef Club. The Clef Club was a multipurpose organization; it served as social club, a booking agency, and a trade union for African American musicians in New York City. He witnessed birds communicating with each other through their songs (Sterelny, 1990). This is very similar to what is observed in the songs of whales. The songs of whales is an example language, the song of the humpback whale includes whistles, low grunts and rattles. It is sung in a long cycle that can range anywhere form 30 minutes to an hour. It is normally the males that sing during to mating season to attract females and also fend off any males that may be in the area (Whitehead and Rendell, 2014). These songs are also not exclusive to humpback whales, they are also seen in many species such as blue whales, humpback whales and fin whales (Whitehead and Rendell, 2014). The song of the bowhead whale is actually very similar to humpback whales. They both have similar cycles, a wide range of frequency as well as the loudest of songs ever recorded. However one main difference between the two is that humpback whales only sing one songs at a time and bowhead whales can sing three (Whitehead and Rendell, 2014), they have differences in their languages just as humans do. Language is defined as a method of communication that is either spoken or written. Similar to what we discussed in class about communication, a sender is sending signal to the receiver, which is then interpreted, and then there is a response, which may be another signal (Personal communication from Dr. Andy Horn, Behavioral Ecology lecture; unreferenced). He expresses the significance of the heart and the role it plays in each individual's life through the use of facts, similes, metaphors, imagery and personification. Doyle even breaks the barriers between reader and writer by switching points of views and incorporating the reader by drawing emotions and evoking thoughts. Bryan Doyle starts off by throwing information to the reader about the hummingbird and its "pencil eraser of a heart." He goes off explaining it's many talents such as "they can fly backward," or "they can fly more than five hundred miles without pausing to rest." Animal Adaptions : The Blue Whale Animal Adaptions – The Blue Whale Introduction The Balaenoptera Musculus, or commonly known as the blue whale, is a carnivorous animal of the order Cetacae and is classified as Baleen due to its morphological structure. It is found in most cold, temperate and coastal waters, as well as deeper oceans, therefore its geographical location varies to all major oceans (Refer to diagram 1.0). The reason for the vastness in their distribution is mostly due to the migration path of a blue whale, which they have adapted to survive in their environment. (Wwf.panda.org, 2015) Due to this, the main purpose of this report is to discuss the various attributes of whales which have assisted in their survival and adaptation in their environments. This includes morphological adaptations such as size, mouth structure, and their body shape; physiological adaptations such as Respiration and their blubber. The report also focuses on behavioural adaptations which discuss migration, and their use of communication. The issues regarding the destruction of whale's habitats due to the increase of ships on today's oceans and climate change is also discussed in this report as well as possible solution which could prevent the possibility of extinction for the Blue Whale. We were on our way and I could actually smell that we were getting closer because the smell of fast food and gas stations were getting far away and it started to smell like concrete after it rains and I looked out my window and i could see the shore, well fast forward 10 minutes and we were at the beach but it wasn't like a public beach it was a little remote area where it was just me my mom and her friend. These magnificent marine mammals rule the oceans with a length of 30 m and an outstanding weight of 200 000 kg. Their tongues alone can weigh as much as an elephant. Their hearts, as much as a car. Blue whales live in all the oceans across the globe. They are migratory, and travel great distances at different times in their lives. The three main regions where blue whales are found are the North Atlantic, the North Pacific and the Southern hemisphere.' 'In the past blue whales were extremely abundant and found swimming in all of the major oceans in the world, According to http://www.seethewild.org/, 'today it is estimated that there are now only between 1,500– 2,500 blue whales left in existence.' Between 1900 and the mid–1960s, 360 000 blue whales were slaughtered.' 'Aggressive hunting in the 1900s by whalers seeking whale oil drove blue whales to the brink of extinction. According to http://www.whalefacts.org/, 'In the past, blue whales were hunted for; Oil (Lamp oil, soap, perfume, candles and cosmetics), Food (Cooking oil, margarine and whale meat), Clothing (corsets and umbrellas) and various other products including tools such as fishing hooks.' During the 20th century, the species was almost exterminated due to commercial whaling.' 'Blue Whales have an important role in helping growing economies. • 34. Blue Whale Research Paper Do you know what the biggest animal ever to live on Earth is? You would be wrong if you speculated a dinosaur, elephant, or giraffe. You may be surprised to find out that the biggest animal ever to live on Earth is the Blue Whale and it is still alive today. The Blue Whale weighs as much as 33 elephants and consumes about 4 tons of food a day. I bet if you knew of an animal that was as long as 3 school buses you would want to keep this animal in the world forever. Although, the Blue Whale may not stay for long, many things affect the blue whale's inhabitance, mainly the acts of humans have caused the Blue Whale's to become endangered. Though, if you know the information about them you can help. Blue Whales communicate and and navigate the oceans by a series of pulses, moans, and groans. Blue Whales can hear much lower frequencies than us and their senses, such as hearing, is adapted to living in an ocean environment. Blue Whales can hear each other up to 1,000 miles away. This is equal to the distance between Memphis, Tennessee to Miami, Florida. The oldest Blue Whale found was 110 years old, only 12 years younger than the oldest person to ever live, Jeanne Calment (122 years old.) • 35. Anthropogenic Waves Rays of pale sunlight pass through a gradient of cerulean blue. The wide–open space seems almost eerie until a humpback whale gently swimming sings his song, and the space fills with wonder, that is until there is a disturbance. Cetaceans evolved to use sound as their way of sensing the environment, navigating, foraging, and selecting mates. Anthropogenic sounds have negative effects on marine life. Humans produce their own underwater sounds through activities such as aircraft over flights, boats and ships (vessels), tourism, stationary offshore activities, air gun firing, sonars, explosions, and methods to control movement of marine life (W. Johnson Richardson and Bernd Würsig, 1997). Many studies have discovered vessels to be the main contributor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Killer whales utilize calls, clicks, and whistles for navigation and foraging (Juliana Houghton et al., 2015). Availability and quality of prey, contaminants, and disturbance of anthropogenic noise are major threats to this endangered whale. The killer whales in the Salish Sea were studied as part of a larger ongoing project to understand vessel noise and its affects in more detail. This study used a new version of digital acoustic tag technology. These tags contain two hydrophones that record all underwater sounds (I will discuss this more further on). Vessel speed was found to contribute the most to anthropogenic noise on this killer whale population. This study can help managers regulate the speed restrictions of vessels in order to help this endangered whale species. Again, we have confirmation that vessels are the primary anthropogenic noise affecting cetacean ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Persuasive Essay On Blue Whales What would the ocean be like without whales? One thing that is never thought about when whales are being hunted is how important they are. For humans to understand the purpose of the whale and just going off the information one has learned may be different. Understanding the whale may be more complex than thought out to be. There is more to know about whales other than they can be big intimidating creatures. It is important to make sure whales are being protected. When an individual enters in a different environment they do not think about the potential danger that could be caused. Because whales are important to the food chain and also the marine life ecosystem, individuals should consider saving the whales. Whales are sentinels of the health ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whales, such as killer whales, are unfairly stereotyped as dangerous or terrifying animals. From 1999–2010 marine mammals accounted for fifteen deaths, two of the deaths were by a single killer whale in captivity where conditions are not the greatest for whales (Rose). Although there is information on marine mammal related deaths there is no specific data on whale related deaths, meaning that the deaths could have come from another species. Whales play an important role in the flow of aquatic ecosystems. Blue Whales consume about forty trillion krill per day on average. By consuming that krill they are doing their part of stabilizing the oceanic ecosystem. Scientists are also learning more about whales and getting better understandings of their species, the cetacean. By performing biological studies and many observations scientists are able to learn about whale communication, intelligence, as well as environmental impacts. When scientists better understand whales they can find even more reasons as to protect whales and the importance of them from an environmental standpoint. Whales should be understood more and treated more fairly than they have been, they are an important part of the marine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He started with using my name, the whole classed looked me and then began to read my essay. He then read a sentence where I had used the word "dose" I immediately reallized my mistake. I felt all the air release from body and I wanted to pass out. Even though I had reread my essay I never caught the mistake. I do not know if it was my mind seeing the correct word when I read it or a form of dyslexia. As well as the computer never caught the mistake because technically it was not a misspelled word. Either way, on that day I learned the difference between "dose and does" and started my disliked English. Rebecca D. Cox author of The College Fear Factor, stated "The many students who seriously doubted their ability to succeed, however, were anxiously waiting for their shortcoming to be exposed, at which point they would be stopped from pursuing their goals" (25). In other words, we as students think that because we have failed once before we tend to stop reaching our goals. It was not until my adult life that I realized that being an example of mistakes that had been made can possibly save someone's life or education. Even though I felt very embarrassed I still used a growth mindset in this learning situation. Can hard work really pay off? Carol S.
