1. Donnie Darko Opening Scene
Style
In the opening 5 minutes of Donnie Darko we see the family talking at the dinning
table and the type of language that is used. We know the family is a smart and high
class family as they are talking about politics and the daughter mentions that she
could get into Harvard which is a very prestigious school in America. Although the
characters have a high class background, it doesn’t stop them from swearing and
cursing at each other. The end of the clip shows us the little girl who is the youngest
child and she swears but the parents just laugh which shows the parents aren’t very
strict with swear words as all of the children were swearing in front of them.
Content
At the start of the clip we see Donnie waking up in the road and then starts riding his
bike home with the music playing in the background. Then we skip straight to the
family at the dinner table and it doesn’t explain what happened at the start of the
scene. Then the script moves to the family swearing and being rude to each other,
the scripts direction is very difficult to see as it doesn’t explain a lot of things right
away. The script is formed mainly for DVD media because it takes a couple times of
watching the movie to understand what’s happening.
Narrative
The narrative structure of this movie is multi stranded as the movie is told with a
variety of actions in a short span of time which is difficult to understand when only
watched once. This is why you must watch it more than once to understand it and so
the movie makes sense to you. I would also include it in a non linear category as it
mixes up the order of the movie. The Movie isn’t traditional with the way it is told as
the movie is told very awkwardly and hard to understand the order at first.

This movie is a Fictional movie about time travel and dreams and weird things that
happen. The film could be identified with many genres such as Sci-fi, drama,
adventure and thriller and more, there is many genres it could be labelled with.
Target Audience
The target audience for Donnie Darko would be people between the ages of 18-38
because although it is difficult to understand it would interest young adults as they
are interested more in fantasy and thrillers than any other group of ages. The gender
target for this movie would be Male, although females could like the movie also but
it is mainly aimed at young adult males because they would be more interested in
the Easter eggs found in the movie. The socio economic groups for the audience of
this movie would be between E and C1 because they are the people that would be
interested in this type of movie as it may relate in some ways to those people.
