2. Subject
For our Documentary, we wanted to choose a topic that we could all relate to, and we decided to do
something based on the creative people in Nottingham. There are a lot of stereotypes out there that if you’re
interested in subjects like Media, Photography and Fashion, that you’re automatically classed as being
‘creative’ and when you study subjects such as Geography and Maths, you’re not. In the Documentary, we
just wanted to show that anyone and everyone can be creative people, it’s just about finding it from within
and learning what type of creative you are from experiences you go through.
One of the other reasons that we decided to pick this topic is that we are all currently studying in Nottingham
and will have easy access to facilities, buildings and people for interviews as well other external contacts that
we know in the media/music industries.
Our main target audience for this video are students in general, but also more specifically any students or
young people living in Nottingham, working in Nottingham or studying here (whether that be at University of
Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University or any other alternative college/school). We want to advocate to the
young generations of children that Nottingham is a creative city and that there are opportunities around, you
just have to go and find them yourself in order to chase your dreams.
3. Research
For our initial research, we
all decided to contact
creative people that we felt
would be able to speak
about their experiences or
help us find an angle for
our Documentary. We also
decided to go online and
research ‘The creative city
of Nottingham’ and see
what content was already
out there and how we
could give more exposure
to those creative people in
Nottingham as well as
showcasing people who
started their careers here.
The screenshots on this page include the literature history of
Nottingham being on of the growing cities which has continued
to develop it’s writing, creativity and performing within the city.
The screenshots above, are from a creative’s Facebook story
which gives a bit more insight to one particular aspect of
Nottingham (we aren’t going to use this in the Documentary,
but the fact that he was speaking about something creative,
sparked up the idea of focusing around the area of Nottingham
4. Approach/Angle
For the documentary, we obviously had to pick a specific aspect to focus on. Initially, we were going to follow
the personal life of a singer/songwriter from Nottingham, but we realised that a 10 minute documentary on
one individual person might make it boring for the audience. Unfortunately we also came across the problem
that the singer/songwriter didn’t want to open up about her personal life so we have decided to speak about
the creative opportunities in Nottingham more generally.
We feel that this will help give a quick insight to the opportunities available in Nottingham, showcase some
professionals who started out their careers in the city of Nottingham and then introduce some young, creative
people and ask them about what it really means to be creative, show some real footage of them in action and
try to inspire as many young students to get creative and involved with any creative opportunities in and
around Nottingham.
One of our group members Brandon, actually knows several of the people personally that we plan to interview
for this documentary, so we are going to hopefully include him in the documentary making it more genuine,
as well as some shots to camera introducing the topic, a voiceover and interviews with some of those creative
people.
5. Documentary Proposal Form
This is our Documentary proposal
form. We have filled out all of the
basic information about our
documentary!
6. Script
This is the basic script that we have come up with for the Documentary. It could possibly change if we are unable to
interview certain people, but the main concept is to have a brief introduction, followed by the history of Nottingham.
We will then introduce a variety of different Nottingham Creatives (not students), a few students, and a summary
with the question ‘Do you think you are a creative?’ speculating on the viewers mind.
7. Pitching
For our pitch we decided to make a quick powerpoint presentation showcasing our idea. Initially, we
weren’t sure what the response was going to be, but we had a lot of positive feedback and some
constructive criticism which would help to improve our project.
After the presentation we were faced with two main queries which were:
1-‘How are you going to get access to these creative people’
And…
2-‘Don’t you think you’ve got too much content for a 10 minute Documentary’
Our response:
1- Luckily, the people in our group are friends with the creative people we intend to interview.
2- We do have a lot of different ideas for our documentary and at the moment our plan isn’t set in stone.
Once we get to the filming stage, we are going to look over the individual concepts and see if there are
things that we can remove - but might wait till the editing stage to see how the clips come together first.
9. Ethical Issues
In all honesty, I don’t think that there are any issues about any topics we are covering in our
documentary. We are trying to promote the creative scene and city of Nottingham and make a quick
documentary on how people have already made success from the area, are currently living her and have a
successful career in the media industry, or are students that are currently studying here and planning
what to do after University.

11. Filming/Editing EVIDENCE
Here are some of the ‘behind the scenes’ shots that we got of
Ricky and Chantelle during the photo-shoot, and we also have
inserted a few of the edited pictures that Ricky created.
We managed to get a lot of footage at Ricky’s house (with
permission to film the environment as extra footage and to
allow the documentary flow more easily!)
12. Filming/Editing EVIDENCE
When we went back to film Ricky, we asked him questions about his editing style and how he
got into photography. Whilst Brandon was interviewing and filming, the rest of our group were
working on time-lapse shots, began some of the editing, and were making sure that we filled
out the consent forms correctly.
13. Filming/Editing EVIDENCE
We also interviewed several students who include
Hannah Clarke from UoN and Laura Moody
(student turned technician) at NTU. In the
documentary we included screenshots, video and
photographic footage which explained who they
are (such as Laura’s Instagram page and some
examples of her photography, and Hannah’s
YouTube button as that’s her primary creativity).
14. Filming/Editing EVIDENCE
We recorded our
own voice over
using the recorder
at University and
had two different
takes, so that we
could edit out
which bits we
needed.
On Instagram, Brandon posted a
story saying that we needed a few
creative people to answer some
questions, and we got a lot of
responses but had to pick some of
the best ones.
In the end we chose
Naim; a model
Momen; NTU student (Thai Boxing)
Luce; NTU student (variety of
things)
It was nice to just introduce a few
creative people near the beginning
of the documentary and explain the
reasons for choosing this as the
topic, and then we introduced
Nottingham as a city, followed by
our interviews.
15. Filming/Editing EVIDENCE
At the Nottingham Creatives meet-up, we got a lot of interviews and
photos to help with our project (as well as just networking and
connecting with new people, if we were to make another episode for the
documentary in the future).
When asking questions in the interview, we asked what their creative
type was (and if they were a student how they were able to balance
student life and creative projects). The final question was how students
in Nottingham could be more proactive and make use of the
opportunities around them.
Here’s some pictures of Regina
and Naim; two of our
interviewees.
16. Filming/Editing EVIDENCE
When we got to the editing stage, we had to colour correct all of our clips. We
edited the videos and pictures on Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro.
