1. Teaching Holiday traditions to 4th graders. There are 20 students 11 girls, and 9 boys.
There are 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish and 2 African Americans.
A- Analyze Learners - The learners for whom this lesson will be for are 4th graders of
different sexes and backgrounds with differences in cultures and Holiday traditions. I
assume that in this country and at their ages there will be a basic knowledge of
“American” holidays. Being that the cultural basis for each child is so divers there may
be some issues in understanding the holidays not celebrated in each students home
S- State Objectives-The objectives for this lesson is that each 4th grade student will
name a specific detail or characteristic of each holiday and which culture is represented
by using a calendar marked with each holiday and filling in the date with the major
identifying factors, using pictures representing each holiday on a velcro board listing
holidays, watching video of holiday celebrations, pairing up with a member of the class
from a different culture and discussing personal family holiday traditions with 90%
accuracy by the end of the week.
S- Select Methods, Media and Materials - The lesson will be taught with video’s
depicting celebration of the various holidays, pictures of notable items or practices and
reading material detailing and exploring each holiday, Calendars and velcro cards will
be used, also personal exploration and research and discussion. A
“show and tell” for each student to have the opportunity to share a family holiday
celebration by creating a class youtube video that will be shared on the class wiki. Each
child will be given time to create a voki that will give a traditional holiday greeting, song,
or reading representing their cultures.
U-Utilize Media and Materials - Video’s will be prescreened and edited for time and
accuracy, the viewing system set up and tested. Photos and reading materials will also
be reviewed for accuracy. Also each “show and tell youtube video” presentation will be
made. Voki’s will be added to the class Wiki.
R-Require Learner Participation-Students will be required to make a presentation of
their own choice on a personal holiday tradition from their cultures. Also play a game
with 5 teams of 4 to be the first to complete an exercise sorting notecards naming the
holidays with photo representation into rows by culture.
E-Evaluate and Revise- After the completion of the lesson it will be reviewed based on
Student participation and success and revised accordingly.
