1. Winter Holiday Traditions around the World
Mrs. Handley’s 4th Grade
HolidayTraditions Unit
Analyze learners:
My class consists of twenty student’s ages nine and ten. There are
eleven girls and nine boys. We are a culturally mixed class including
two Muslims,three Jews,and two African-Americans.I will include a
variety of holidaytraditions includingthose of the students;Hanukkah,
Kwanzaa, and Christmas. I will ask my students how they celebrate the
holidays at home.
State objectives:
During this unit, my students will “visit” 5 differentcountries and
learn abouthow the holidays are celebrated there.We will do this by
readingbooks,watching short films, writing assignments and activities.
Each studentwill have their own “suitcase”and “passport”. Each day
they will have a “plane ticket” to the country we will be learningabout
that day. We will collect our holidaytradition information in a
suitcase. At the end of this week longunit I expect each studentto have
2. gained a general knowledge of each holidaytradition.To show me what
they know they will make a short group presentation.I expect an
accuracy rate of at leasta 95%.
Selectmethods,media,and materials:
For this unit I will use a variety of materials.The suitcases will be
made from construction paper. Printed world maps with the five
counties we will visit labeled,will be attached to the front of the
suitcases.The student will personalizetheir suitcase by adding stickers
and drawings.Theywill have crayons, markers, color pencils, and
stickers availableto them. The passports and plane tickets will be
printed and copied from a pre-made template found on the internet. I
will also be usingseveral You-Tube video clips pertainingto the holiday
traditions that we will be learningabout.
Utilize media and material:
I will set up our classroom in preparation of this unit by hanging
traditional holidaydécor items from the countries we will visit. I will
also preview the You-Tube videos to make sure they are grade
appropriate and so I will be prepared to answerany question aboutthe
3. video and to help describe whatthey are watching.I will have the
suitcases assembled and readyfor the students to personalize.I will
also have the passports and plane tickets printed in advance.
Requirelearnerparticipation:
The students will participate in this unit by decoratingtheir
suitcase,watching the video clips, and by participating in class
discussion pertainingto holidaytraditions around the world. I will
place my students into groups and have them presenta certain holiday
tradition.
Evaluateand revise:
Throughoutthis unit I will evaluate and revise the lessons to meet
the individual learningneeds of my students.I will adjustany media or
materials used to any special need. At the end of this unit I will use the
unit quizzes to evaluate the methods I used and to make any
improvements oradjustments.
