Bodwell High School was founded in 1991 in the City of Vancouver and is a non-denominational, co-educational day and boarding school, offering grades 8 to 12 and university preparation. In September, 2003, the school moved into its new facility on Harbourside Drive in North Vancouver, overlooking Burrard Inlet and the Vancouver harbour. Bodwell's purpose is to "provide a culturally diverse environment for students from around the globe, and enable them to become active learners and well-rounded citizens who contribute positively to the world.”[1] Bodwell’s courses follow the Provincial Curriculum prescribed by the British Columbia Ministry of Education. Students who fulfill the graduation program receive a high school graduation diploma issued by the Ministry of Education. multilingual gives young people the power to communicate across cultures. Almost worldwide, post-secondary study
requires a mastering of language skills in English. Strong English abilities are a powerful asset in business and other

With 25 years of experience, helping students with a range of English language skills is a specialty in which we excel

LEARNING ABOUT THE
WORLD THROUGH ENGLISH
At Bodwell our Academic and English Preparation Program (AEP) is a
focused English Language Learning (ELL) curriculum. High school
content is interwoven into AEP programming to ensure a smooth
transition into the regular high school curriculum. Instruction covers
basic interpersonal communication to advanced academic language
proficiency. In addition, students will learn crucial skills for academic
success such as teamwork, research and problem solving.
Assessment and placement
Accurate assessment and placement of students in the appropriate
language levels is most important. All new students are carefully
measured in their comprehension, oral and written English skills to be
placed in the right level as soon as they start school. Student progress
is checked every three weeks with a language rubric. The rubric is what
staff, parents, and students can all refer to in order to understand the
student’s improvement in English grammar, speaking, listening, writing
and reading skills.
AEP proficiency levels
Bodwell offers AEP classes in grades 8 to 11. The grade 8 and 9 classes
are divided into two language levels and the grade 10 and 11 classes
are divided into four language levels. Once a specific level of English
proficiency has been met, a student is promoted to the next level. This
continues until they reach a proficiency that would allow them to
succeed in the academic grade program.
Course offerings
Academic and English Preparation courses are intensive English
courses which focus on literature, social sciences, and academic
writing for all levels. In the highest level of AEP, some courses
blend the sciences with the language content. We plan for
students to spend three quarters of their time during each term in
this intensive English program before moving into the academic
grade program. In the various levels of AEP language learning,
teachers tap into students’ prior knowledge, model best language
practices, apply plenty of verbal cues and body gestures, build key
vocabulary terms, and scaffold learning step by step.
Elective courses are offered to AEP students in each term. AEP
students choose an elective from a wide variety of courses such as
Art, Drama, Concert Band, Physical Education, Food and
Nutrition, Digital Media and Mathematics. A wide range of elective courses serves to match the different levels of
English language skills that the AEP student is at. Students with lower English skills will start with less language
intensive subjects and progress towards subjects requiring more English skills.

At Bodwell we trust that education has the power to push young people past the problematic thinking of yesterday,
to step back to see the big picture of any issue at hand and to open up minds to future possibilities. Critical thinking
is the ability to use reason and reflection in thinking clearly about what to believe or do. It is essential in order to see
how seemingly-disparate ideas or concepts are in fact connected, that content learned in one subject is deeply tied
to that learned in another and all linked to a student’s own personal experience.
We see the importance of practicing critical thinking in order to weigh the worth of previously-held ideas and

OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM
Learning by doing
Bodwell courses are designed with rich academic growth in mind. Courses closely follow the latest BC Provincial
Curriculum. Select Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered too. Literacy and numeracy make up our classroom
building blocks, while students need to demonstrate intellectual development through clearly communicating their
learning to others.
Active learning is a central practice both on and off-campus. Students take responsibility for their own mastery of
ideas by engaging in interactive hands-on activities. Such activities commonly include class debates, learning journals
and peer teaching — to name only a few.
Our teachers regularly give meaningful feedback not only to measure but also to advance student learning. We
encourage students to take part in standardized testing and academic competitions. Prior to graduation, graduates
proudly present their individual learning portfolios to conclude their journey.
Small class size
With smaller classes, students and their teachers form
an intimate, multicultural family, allowing for enhanced
individual and group opportunities. Bodwell limits
each class to a maximum of 24 students, with 17 being
the average. In AEP, the class sizes are even smaller.
Use of technology
Students are guided through the curriculum with tools
such as SmartBoards, which allow students to model
and manipulate complex concepts. All students are
issued a laptop to encourage collaboration and learn
skills vital to a modern work environment.

Festivities
Major school festivities are times to bring all students together for celebration and community building. Festivities
may promote specific cultural occasions, traditional Canadian customs, or broader large social activities.
Events
Several times a week there are events arranged for students to gradually push their boundaries and expose
themselves to unfamiliar places and interests. These include such popular drop-in events as cooking lessons,
sporting intramurals and musical performances.
Outings
Our supervised outings bring groups all over the local region to join cultural celebrations and sporting events, and to
make good use of the pristine natural settings of the West Coast. More adventurous students may even take
advantage of carefully-planned wilderness trips offered several times each term.
Life Skill Workshops
In order to support students’ development of life skills, we offer a number of ongoing opportunities for focused
learning. These include workshops on relevant topics from visiting experts, individual guidance from our specialized
staff and access to information and resources on a broad spectrum of issues.

important title. Instead, we teach students to lead their lives in service to others. Balancing this with self-care is key.
Whether through direct acts or by finding a solution to a compelling problem or need, one person can make all the

Concrete skills to be covered are: taking initiative, communicating ideas, problem solving and much more. Foremost,
effort in leadership teaches students the importance of integrity — of having sound convictions and demonstrating

move towards. It is not unusual for students to struggle with these choices, responding with “How should I know?”
Bodwell guides students in answering these questions on their own. Planning for the future is akin to making a “map”
of oneself that highlights individual strengths, interests, challenge, and ambitions. Students are encouraged to survey
their own futures so that possible paths are visible, open and abundant. Through the steps of “mapping”, students
can choose their study and career goals with confidence.

Bodwell hosts a university fair every year that showcases the numerous university opportunities that exist in Canada.

We also hold many university presentations and workshops throughout the year aimed at not only exposing students

Graduation Transitions Program
Students face a daunting challenge when trying to make sense of all the choices available and where they fit in. The
Graduation Transition Program helps students explore their strengths and investigate post-secondary institutions that
are looking for those strengths. Discovery of new interests through initiatives organized by the program (e.g. career-
focused volunteering) helps brainstorming aimed at uncovering career and study paths.

n our 25th anniversary, we’ve
undertaken our second expansion
project, the most ambitious to date. With
this expansion, we will be able to host over
500 boarders in an enhanced facility that
includes an additional gymnasium, a new
library, classrooms and green spaces.
