The primary learning objectives of this study for
undergraduate students are:
• To encourage freshman students to think self-
consciously about their own reading and learning
practices and consider how the material condi-
tions of their reading and learning shape their ex-
periences.
• To analyze how their own reading practices change
when hand-held reading devices provide all textual
content.
• To get freshman students to think about what
skills and practices define civic literacy.
• To get freshman students to engage in a range of
research and presentation skills that will shape
their academic futures.
The primary teaching objectives of this study are:
• To engage freshman students as active and
