2. What is body
image?
Today, majority of the people are very conscious about how they
look. Body image has become an obsession.
Society has embedded body image standards that began to have
a negative affect on people.
An individual would rather be thin than healthy, this has lead some
people into anorexia, bulimia, depression, etc.
3. The affect of
Body Image on
Riders.
Riders are expected to look a certain way in terms of body image.
Thin is what they look for.
Those who doesn’t fall in the thin category are usually looked
down at.
Unfortunately, those who don’t look in a certain way (thin), they
will instantly assume that they aren't good riders because of their
weight.
Many riders have self esteem issues because of the standards that
the community has put and it not only affected their confidence
but it also affected their riding.
4. Exploring self-
compassion as a
refuge against
recalling the
body-related
shaming of
caregiver eating
messages on
dimensions of
objectifiedbody
consciousness in
college women
Caregivers negativity have a great impact on women when they
grow up.
Caregivers’ body shame and criticism made women dissatisfied
with their looks and that lead them to criticizing themselves
harshly.
Caregivers control over food had an effected on the women's food
choices.
“excessive parental control and more specific verbalized caregiver
opinions about food consumption may undermine the develop-
ment of healthy approaches to relating to one’s body”(1)
They later found out that women with self-compassion
“participants reporting a greater self- compassionate mindset in
how they treat themselves during difficult times tended to
endorse lower levels of body shame, body surveillance and less
frequent recall of restrictive/critical caregiver eating messages.”

5. This table is
from the study
I talked about
earlier.
”step 1, both BMI and restrictive/critical caregiver eating messages were
positively associated with body shame whereas self-compassion was
negatively related to this component of objectified body consciousness.” (3)
“Step 2 the interaction between restrictive/critical caregiver eating
messages and self-compassion scores accounted for an additional 1% of the
variance in partici- pants’ reported body shame. “ (4)

Today, many people, specially teenagers, are very conscious about how they look. Appearance have become everything to them. Society embedded body image standards that began to have a negative impact on people and I believe media is the one to blame. Media plays a huge role on how one should look. Media has been preaching about body image for many years and it gets worse every year. They use celebrities, sports people, and super models as examples. This lead people to anorexia, bulimia, depression, etc. because they feel pressured by society. It’s not any different in the show jumping world. When it come to sports such as Show Jumping, you are expected to look certain way.
In the show jumping world you are expected to look a certain way. However, the community does not tell the rider that you have to look certain way. They don’t bully, tease, or annoy riders but we know by how people look down at a rider that does not comply with the standards. They make a rider believe that if they are normal weight or little over weight the rider wont look good on the horse. This has affected a lot of riders including me. It affected their self-esteem, confidence, and their riding. Even those who meet the criteria, they have become obsessed with their body image. The majority believe that those who don’t meet “thin body” standard they aren't as good of a rider. However, Body image has nothing to do with the rider’s ability to ride. Show Jumping is all about speed, your approach to the fence, strides, and distance. Also, show jumping is about balance, strength, and courage. And obviously pray not to fall. Sure show jumping is a sport and you need to be fit and healthy but it is not a requirement. People must stop obsessing over body image.
This study shows how caregivers’ (mother, father, grandma, etc.) treatment to their daughters when they were young have a huge impact on them, the daughters, when they grow up. This study used college women. It showed that when these women where body shamed when they were you in effected them when they grew up. Caregivers body shaming, criticism , and controlling habit have had an effect on the women. Women started to harshly criticize they way they look because of their caregivers. Some has lead women to over consumption or under consumption of food because of caregiver control over food and their criticism towards weight. However, the study showed women with self-compassion were less likely to be haunted by their caregivers body shaming, criticism and food control. Because they have accepted themselves, they were more successful in controlling their appearance, food consumption, and weight.
While going through the data they have found out that there wasn’t a major change between the too and it did not add a unique variance to todays self control sample.
This video helps people to overcome body image issues. I find it helpful for those who are going through it. It helps to boost ones self-esteem buy simply following the provided steps.
