Analysis Of The Pedestrian By Ray Bradbury
Can conforming to a culture prove beneficial to one's character? Or will it have permanent, damaging effects on an individual's state of mind? "The
Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury is an introduction to the idea of the conflict between personal desire, and an obligation to behave according to the social
norm. Ray Bradbury antagonizes a world of technological advancements. It is valuable to note that the story is a reflection of Bradbury's concerns of
an automotive world. These concerns stem from the endangerment of writing as a consequence of technological innovations, since new technology
comes hand–in–hand with new forms of media. This explains Bradbury's antagonization of a world that relies on technology considering the inevitable
decision between conforming to ever–evolving standards, or fulfilling personal desires. In this case, Bradbury had the choice of either adapting to new
advancements and self–expressing through modern forms of media, while sacrificing the enjoyment as well as the familiarity of future work, or
refusing to conform and sacrificing success. The standardization of television was an endangerment of professional writing, which the author expressed
in the story. For instance, the robot implied that writing has become obsolete by stating that the protagonist had no profession. The short story "The
Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury is an explicit representation of the conflict between personal desire and having to conform to society.
An individual who refuses to submit to the pressure of a dominant culture will become cast out. This introduces a conflict between personal desire,
and yielding to the surrounding civilization. Mr. Mead was cast out as a direct consequence of refusing to adopt the behavioural standards of other
members of the society. This becomes evident when Mr. Mead's is cast out by a police officer, and transported to "the Psychiatric Center for
Research on Regressive Tendencies." Mr. Mead is also cast out by fellow citizens when, through the windows on the street "faces appear and an
entire street be startled by the passing of a lone figure" when carrying out what Mr. Mead "most dearly loved to do." In Bradbury's dystopian society,
being an outcast has dire consequences. Thus

Television В– The Equivalent Of Death
In "The Pedestrian" it seems as though everything has some kind of connection to death. Ray Bradbury makes so many references to words that
make us feel as though we are staring down death straight in the eyes. Words such as "phantoms" and "frozen" lead us to believe that the world of
2056 is a very chill and alone one. We feel as though Leonard Mead is the only alive thing left roaming the earth.
There are a lot of examples in "The Pedestrian" that we can compare to everyday occurrences. Such as when Leonard Mead said he couldn't pull
himself away from the light. We see this happen in everyday life. We know something might lead to danger, yet we are still drawn to it out of curiosity

This I find rather ironic because young children and infants, don't have the need for TV. Sure, they will watch it if you turn it on and set them in front
of it, but they don't choose to. Children would rather play outdoors in the sand and trees, not spend all their time in front of a television screen. This
comes to my conclusion that Ray Bradbury somewhat incorporated death into his short story "The Pedestrian" whether he meant to or not. What I do
know for a fact is, that if we keep continuing to let technology rule our lives, we aren't going to have any lives left. There has to be a bigger purpose
to life then being born to wake up every morning just to turn the television on, and dying knowing we didn't miss a single

Ray Bradbury's The Pedestrian
In 2014, a statistic from Recode Research found that 90% of United States households have three or more technological devices pinging in the internet.
Devices such as phones and tablets are so psychologically powerful that they not only change how humans act, but how humans communicate. The
short story titled, The Pedestrian, written by Ray Bradbury, offers a glance into the future, depicting Leonard Mead, who takes long walks every
evening in a society that only lives for watching tv. In another story called August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains, also written by Bradbury,

The use of communication technology allows humans to get used to doing less. Sherry Turkle, a TED Talk speaker, informs people of how technology
causes people to be connected, but alone. Her analysis of solitude shows the audience that humanity is unable to reach out to other people and form real
attachments. Turkle states "People can't get enough of each other, if and only if they can have each other at a distance, in amounts that they can
control. I call it The Goldilocks Effect." The Goldilocks Effect refers to the habits of humans wanting each other not too close, not too far, but just right.
This effect, and other consequences from communication technology, proves that humans expect more from technology than from each other. Humans
find it easier to keep to themselves rather than to participate in social interaction. The continued use of technological devices encourages distance
between humans. Communication technology may never be used the intended way as a helping aid, rather, it is used as a replacement to human
interaction and

Stop Traffic On Galbraith Road And Preventing Tour Buses...
Construction can have a large impact on its surroundings, including local residents, pedestrians and vehicular traffic depending on the site's location.
For example, many of the sites visited in Toronto affected traffic as they had frequent deliveries and had to stop traffic to allow this. This includes the
Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Toronto where frequent trucks enter and exit to remove excavated soil
(***Special Lecture***), stopping traffic on Galbraith Road and preventing tour buses from enterring. On the other hand, outside the city, construction
has far less of an impact as there are often multiple lanes for traffic, and little or no pedestrian traffic. When building in Toronto then, it is important to
minimize construction's effect on pedestrians, vehicle traffic, and local residents if present, since these parties are all impacted by the decisions made
on site.
In our site visits, we examined many sites at varying stages of completion, and noticed how some of them dealt with construction's effect on the
surroundings, as will be discussed here:
Yorkville Plaza II (YP2)– 21 Yorkville Avenue– Developer: Camrost–Felcorp
This site is located in the heart of Toronto's affluent Yorkville neighbourhood, and will be the home of a 40

Compare And Contrast Accidental Time, And 'The Pedestrian'
Mexico City and Los Angeles, two immense cities of very different characteristics and cultures, are brought together by Octavio Paz's "Identical Time"
and Ray Bradbury's "The Pedestrian". Because through featuring certain individuals as particularly alive in their cities, they each have, in common, a
theme of aliveness: in "Identical Time", the old man is alive in the busy dawn of the Mexico City, and in "The Pedestrian", the protagonist Mr. Mead is
alive in the quiet night of a future Los Angeles envisioned by Bradbury. Though manifested as stillness in "Identical Time" and, quite the contrary,
motion in "The Pedestrian", aliveness signifies in both, likewise, as living a human life freely in the present and through the beauty of nature.
Furthermore, with their portrayals of the individual's struggles and quests to be alive in their own cities, the two pieces speak together to how both
cities, and indeed city lives in general, might hinder our own aliveness and, by that, humanity. In "Identical Time", aliveness is attributed to a state of
stillness, against the backdrop of constant movement that is Mexico City. Mexico City is personified and portrayed as under movement and action in
the very first stanza: "turning on its shadow / searching always searching itself" (Paz 1). The city is moving and "turning", and the repetition of the
word "searching" indicates that the city, or rather its people, are in active and eager pursuits – of themselves, their dreams and futures,

1.The dark fact that is foreshadowed by the description of the "buckling concrete walk" is that the future world is lonely, dark and silent. The pedestrian
seems to be living a lonely life with no other stimulation.
2.What appears to be in charge of this future world is some sort of computer automation. There is no human element or emotion present when Mead is

Walking At Night In The Pedestrian By Ray Bradbury
In The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury, Leonard Mead is ostracized for walking at night, to the extent of being arrested. This is symbolic of the ignoring
and shunning and even the legal troubles that those who go against the main idea purported in society face. It is also symbolic of those that dare to be
active thinkers in a passive thinking world. The powers in charge in Leonard Mead's world believe that him walking every night could upset their social
stability. In the short story, this takes the form of the police arresting him and taking him to a psychiatric centre. This ostracizes the Pedestrian and
makes him be seen as a social pariah. Leonard Mead also believes that his society will ostracize him if they found out he was walking at night.

Character And Conflict In The Cop And The Anthem, By Ray...
In both short stories, "The Cop and the Anthem" By O. Henry and " The Pedestrian" By Ray Bradbury, both authors used character and conflict. in the
short stories, the characters used have a lonely personality to them which causes conflict between misunderstood police. The conflict, both involves
something or someone missing in their life, though neither do not mind and going through with life somehow. The story of "The Cop and the
Anthem" is about a man named Soapy trying to figure out how to get into jail since he was homeless and need a place to go for the winter season. He
tries his best to get thrown in jail but never does succeed. However, when he finally gives up, a policeman sends the homeless man to jail for the 3
months; just long enough to be saved by the brutal winter. In the story of "The Pedestrian", Mr. Leonard Mead has no one to be with him. He drowns
in his sorrows by walking on the street at night. For the past ten years, he had been walking on the same route every night. He pasts by other
families' homes and wishing he could have the same. A police car comes by and assume Mr. Leonard Mead was doing illegal actives. The car sends
him to the Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies. Both O. Henry and Bradbury used character and conflict to communicate the
theme of the short stories. The central idea of the short story, " The Cop and the Anthem" is to let fate happen and bring you to what you desire most.
O. Henry uses the literary elements, character and conflict, throughout the story. " He was filled with sadness. He was still free. Was he going to
remain free forever?" This shows the character of Soapy determine to get thrown into jail to stay away from the cold, three month winter. The
conflict, preventing Soapy from succeeding for a trip to jail, was he was too desperate to go to jail, and the police did not believe him. "And Soapy,
sick at heart, walked slowly away. He had failed two times." and " Soapy felt a hand on his arm. He looked quickly around into the broad face of a
cop.'What are you doing hanging around here?' asked the cop. 'Nothing,' said Soapy. 'You think I believe that?' said the cop. Full of his new strength,
Soapy began to argue. And it is not wise to

Suspense In Ray Bradbury's 'The Pedestrian'
In one of his most well–known short stories "The Pedestrian", Ray Bradbury utilizes the character of Leonard Mead to build suspense through a town
where the setting is described almost grave–like. This mysterious man Leonard Mead decides to go outside the norm of his society and take a walk
around town instead of staying inside. Ray Bradbury continues to builds on this suspense when the police officer pulls him over for being the only one
outside. In Ray Bradbury's "The Pedestrian", he uses the setting to place his readers into a dystopia where the world is dictated by people who are
dumbfounded at the sight of seeing someone roam the streets, and he uses a mysterious mood to build suspense in his reader's minds. Bradbury's "The

The Pedestrian
The Pedestrian is a short story by Ray Bradbury. The theme of the short story is all about technology in which it deals with the dangers living in a
society which is not only reliant on technology, but uses technology to control its citizens and to destroy those individuals who dare to exercise
freedom of expression.
At the start of the short story the writer sets the scene for the reader, both in time and place but also by describing the kind of society that exists in the
future world. In the short story the writer writes,
"For long ago he had wisely changed his to sneakers"

In this sentence, you can see the pride and dignity that Mead had and how he summed it up so much in just these three words.

Death of the Literate World in Ray Bradbury's The Pedestrian
Ray Bradbury's short story, "The Pedestrian," shows the not–too–distant future in a very unfavorable light. The thinking world has been eaten away by
the convenience that is high technology. This decay is represented by the fate that befalls Leonard Mead. Though only an isolated incident, it
foreshadows the end of thinking, literate society.
The world in the year 2053 is populated by people who are more dead than alive. Their technology has made them very lazy. Walking has become
obsolete, as the title of the story indicates. Leonard Mead is not a pedestrian; he is, in a city of three million people (105), the pedestrian. Walking had
become so uncommon, that the sidewalk was "vanishing under flowers and grass" (104–105). Bradbury ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Leonard Mead hears nothing but "whisperings and murmurs" (104) coming from the open windows he passes. The human voice has become so
scarce, Mead hesitates each time he hears one (104). Clearly Mead yearns to have any sort of conversation with a real person. Reading has also
become a casualty within the technologically advanced world of the twenty–first century. Mead was a writer, but "he hadn`t written in years" (105).
Dependence on television had created a world in which "magazines and books didn't sell anymore" (105). Movie versions of books were as close as
these people came to reading.
The atmosphere is gloomy, with several references to a dying civilization. First, the story is set in November. It is the beginning of the end. Secondly,
Bradbury describes walking through Mead's neighborhood as "not unequal to walking through a graveyard" (104). Another reference to the doomed
society is Bradbury's description of the houses as being "tomblike buildings" (104).
But among this garbage heap of humanity stands Leonard Mead, a kind of Anti–Christ. Mead represents the last of the thinking human beings.
Bradbury's description of Mead as being "alone in this world of 2053, A.D., or as good as alone" (104) is a reference to this situation. It is significant
that Mead begins his walk "in a westerly direction" (104). Like the sun passing from view, so is the walking, talking, thinking man. Mead is a

Utopia and dystopia:
Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian"
Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" is a dramatic illustration of the dangers of living in a world where contact with nature is deemed so
abnormal that even walking alone at night is a crime. The dystopian story revolves around the tale of a man named Leonard Mead, living during a time
period not so far away from our own, in 2053 CE. In the story, a robotic police car is so suspicious of Mead's walking behavior during one pleasant
night that he is taken away to a psychiatric hospital. In the new world, desiring televised rather than real experience is considered 'normal.' People only
venture out during the day when it is required for their work. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In many communities, walking 'behavior' does appear to be unusual, because it looks so uncommon, despite the natural physiological aspect of
walking. Riding in a car is seen as more normal, just like a robotic policeman is seen as more normal in the Bradbury story. Today, people do still
walk, but often on a moving conveyor belt at the gym, rather in a real environment. This takes people away from nature and a sense of being part of
something larger than themselves. Although Bradbury does not specifically discuss the physical risks of inactivity, the nation's climbing obesity rate is
clear evidence of the fact that Americans are moving less and instead turning to sedentary pastimes to unwind. From Bradbury's perspective in time, the
dangers of television were the greatest risk posed to enjoying hands–on, real world activities. Today, there are even more varied sedentary distractions,
spanning from the Internet, to mobile phones, to video games. In the modern world, we are increasingly categorized by our technological devices. Our
cellphones, cars, and computers define our identities, rather than our bodies. We are losing the ability to amuse ourselves in the outside world. But it is
our connection to nature, stripped of technology, which is essential to our individuality, not the programs we watch on television–or the appearance of
our cellphones. Bradbury's dystopian story provides a warning that is clearly not being heeded. Although we may have more technological

A Research On Pedestrian Detection
The four papers about pedestrian detection we chose to summarize were great and informative, all suggested useful techniques and new ideas in deep
learning for pedestrian detection. However, there were few open issues or room for improvement in some of the papers. Here are some of the ideas
we suggested to resolve these issues in each paper.
Joint Deep Learning for Pedestrian Detection (UDN)
Even though the Unified Deep Net (UDN) method learned features by designing hidden layers for the Convolutional Neural Network such that
features, deformable parts, occlusions, and classification can be jointly optimized, one of its problems is it treats pedestrian detection as a single binary
classification task, which is not able to capture rich pedestrian variations. For example, the method is not able to distinguish pedestrians from hard
negatives due to their visual similarities. This problem can be resolved by jointly optimizing pedestrian detection with auxiliary semantic tasks, such as
including pedestrian attributes and scene attributes, which was represented in our previous report.
Another problem with the UDN method is it did not explicitly model mixture of templates for each body parts, and did not depress the influence of
background clutters. Thus, the method could be improved by explicitly model the complex mixture of visual appearance at multiple levels. For
example, some extra layers can be added into the hierarchy of the UDN, so that at each feature level, this

Film Adaptation In Ray Bradbury's 'The Pedestrian'
The Pedestrian The PBS article, on film adaptation, discusses the difference between written text and film and the struggle of adapting a book into
a movie. Statistically, 65 percent of all novels are adapted into a film. Stories and novels rely on the narrator to tell the story whereas, films don't
usually have a narrator. Films tend to be way shorter then a novel or story because one frame can be worth six pages of description. Films have a pro
side and a con side, one con is that a film takes away your own personal perception while with any written literature, one has their own perception of a
certain scenario, what a character looks like, etc. Unlike written literacy, a film has certain limits, for example, time, interaction, money, and... Show

The film adaptation of the short story "The Pedestrian" have many similarities and differences. The film adaptation and the short story had a bad
connection. In the short story, the story had narration whereas the film had a second character. Having a second character changed the theme
because in the short story he is isolated from society while having a second character in the film he has friendship. If narration were to be used in
the film, one could infer that Leonard Mead is lonely, odd, and isolated from society because he is the only one that walks. Also, in the short story,
the other theme is that in the future, humanity is hopeless and will be unsocial. In the film, Leonard was able to get his friend, Bob, away from the
TV and go on a walk with him. By being able to persuade Bob to go on a walk, the film's version is hopeful for the future. The film adaptation messed

fully automated. They believe that robot police car is better than the policeman. It shows, society gives more value to automatic machine. Why they
use a robot police car? Why does the robot police car arrest him without any specific reason? If there had been a policeman inside the car, he would
not have been arrested. He is arrest because the machine police does not know his feelings. He wants to see nature and wants fresh air, but robot

The short story The Pedestrian is an intriguing story that takes place in the future. This story suggests that if the world continues the progress that it is

begin to stop caring for others. Is this actually a possibility in the future? In this short story there is a man by the name of Mr. Mead who doesn't
necessarily do the same as everyone else. In this future based story, there is a curfew for everyone at which they should begin to watch TV. Mr. Mead

it talks about the police car and says, "...peered into the back seat, which was a little cell, a little black jail with bars. It smelled of riveted steel. It

A Brief Note On Pedestrian Detection Of Surveillance
Pedestrian Detection in Surveillance
Abstract
Pedestrian detection is fragmented as there are numerous algorithms used in different research. This research aims to provide an overview to
understand the current state of pedestrian detection as well as analyse the challenges, effectiveness, accuracy and cost benefit of different approaches
used in surveillance and how current challenges are being tackled.
Introduction
Pedestrian detection is a key problem in computer vision. There are a number of ways that makes it difficult to achieve without faults due to the
differences in colour, motion, orientation and poses of individual human beings but also segregation of the background which may or may not be
cluttered as well as other moving objects that just might get in the way.
Even though it is a difficult matter it is still a major research areas as there a great implications of perfecting the system. Key application could
include in the field of surveillance, robotics as well as a tool in vehicular safety. It can also be used in a commercial apects as businesses would be
able to count the number of pedestrians creating a flow statistics for optimizing their business. For it to be effective it should be able to handle
emerging complex scenarios such as speed of detection for vehicles to enable them to avoid or stop immediately and the accuracy in detecting
pedestrian through a crowd for businesses. These applications can also then be forwarded to surveillance as factors

Leonard Meads nightly activities when he says"on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to

Leonard Mead's lack of interaction with others and how he observes the way people interact influences him to be different from others. Without the

The Pedestrian By Leonard Mead
The Light in the Dark In any given situation, individuals experience conflicts when pursuing a personal desire as particular desires do not conform to
the rules that societies standardize for individuals. Individuals quickly adapt to the modernization of the advancement of humanity and technology.
Nevertheless, there may be a controversy deciding between obeying society's regulations of consistently keeping up with the innovative contemporary
behaviour or sticking with subjective or independent aspirations. In the short story The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury, Leonard Mead's complication
between pursuing his personal desire and choosing to conform creates an issue with the development as an individual. Symbols within the story that
further highlighted the distinct difference between personal desires and deciding to conform include Mr. Mead's shoes, television, and the houses.
Moreover, each symbol that was stated demonstrates a diverse idiosyncratic characteristic about the protagonist as does the psychological components
of Mr. Mead such as word choice, speech, behaviour and mental processes. However, throughout the story, the protagonist, Mr. Leonard Mead is
exemplified through a third person limitedpoint of view as it gradually illuminates the understanding that society's need for conformation and an
individual's needs may produce a consequential disagreement of discrepancy. Ray Bradbury's short story suggest that conflicts between pursuing a

Technology Vs. Human Interaction In The Pedestrian By Ray...
The piece of literature I have chosen is The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury. It's about a not so far dystopian future where nobody leaves their house
and television is more important than human interaction. This story revealed to me that people will chose technology and the comfort of their
home over human interaction. People lost their sense of interaction. It also revealed to me that in the natural world being the slightest different
can cause suspicion and problems. In the story, the narrator, Leonard Mead, is taking his nightly walk around the city. As usual is around 8:30
and nobody is out. He glances through the windows of nearly every house he passes and sees the flicker of the television on the curtains. He had
been walking everyday for 10 years and not once did he see anybody outside. Today if you were to walk outside at 8:30pm you would run into at
least 10 people. In this future everybody prefers to be in their house watching their TVs or some other electronical device. Mr. Mead would walk past

responsive. In other words, it would pull you over and talk to you. No human interaction needed. The "cop" asked him what his profession was and Mr.

Individuality In The Pedestrian And Fahrenheit 451 By Ray...
In life, it is commonly stated that "A man who doesn't think for himself, does not think at all." This statement is supported in "The Pedestrian" and
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In Fahrenheit 451 the main character finds himself bound to the expectations of society and robotically follows every
order that is given to him without second thoughts. This leads to him being unknowingly unhappy and having a hollow existence. But as the story
progressed the main character became more aware of the person that he truly was, and when he had finally discovered that person, he was truly happy.
On the contrary, In "The Pedestrian" a lone individual who is different from society is able to think for himself, thus giving him freedom from the
bonds of society and the ability to embrace his individuality. Making him free and happy. In both stories, we see how individuality releases people
from the shackles of their society and finally allows them to be truly happy with who they are. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 and the ... Show more

were ill lit by television light. Tombs are usually the graves of the dead, and as the house is dark, it usually means that it lacks life. Leonard Mead then

The Pedestrian Ray Bradbury Character Analysis
Has mankind managed to progress in a positive way? In "The Pedestrian", Ray Bradbury shared his opinion about the situation. Using characterization
and imagery Bradbury shows that if the world advances to the point where people lose all humanity then the world might as well not exist, although
his opinion may not be the opinion of all mankind it is logical and understood. Rays opinion about the future and forces the reader to consider the
possible reality of it.
The short story is a science fiction set in the future, 2053. The m main character, Leonard Mead is a lonely writer who spends a good majority of
his time taking long walks for pure enjoyment, unlike the rest of the brain dead civilians who are only focused on materialistic things and
technology. As leonard is taking one of his leasurely walks, a robotic police officer forces him to stop. In his society taking walks is considered
"strange". The officer asks him many wuestions one question being "what is your employment?". When Mead tells the officer he is a writer the

Ray makes a statement on the effect of improvements in our world today. In the story it says "... but one particular house had all of its electric
lights brightly lit, every window allowed illumination, square and warm in the cool darkness". This is symbolic to Meads actions and personality.
He chooses to live in the light as apposed to the other brain dead citizens who sit by the T.V all day. Bradburry stresses death in his imagry to show
you what ife would be ike in a world that lets improvements drive humanity away. Examples of his use of imagry would be the dead leaves scattered

Isolation In The Pedestrian By Ray Bradbury
Atmosphere is used to induce an emotion or feeling in the audience; authors integrate mood into their work using descriptions of the setting and
dialogue between the characters. Ray Bradbury's short speculative fiction "The Pedestrian" uses narration and imagery to portray the mood of
isolation. The protagonist, Leonard Mead, is known to take lengthy walks without any discernible direction; he is depicted walking down a "silent and
long and empty" street. The imagery of the silence and length of the darkened street imply that Leonard is at a significant distance, whether physically
or mentally, away from the closest person. He cannot see another human being, which further perpetuates the mood of isolation. As he passes a
residential area, he

Utilization Rates of Pedestrian Bridges in Kuala Lumpur
Introduction
Traffic congestion and air pollution are becoming growing problems in many cities in Malaysia. In order to discourage automobile dependency, and
increase pedestrian activities particularly for short trips, the government has begun to promote non–motorized travel options by improving pedestrian
facilities that promote an assured level of convenience, comfort, and security for potential users. One of the facilities that have been provided by the
government is the pedestrian bridge.
A pedestrian bridge or footbridge is a bridge constructed for pedestrians and sometimes for cyclists and bikers as well. It reduces the conflicts of traffic
flow between the pedestrians and the vehicles by separating them. Hence, it helps in overcoming accidents and offers safety.
However, due to the added travel distance, most of the pedestrians normally avoid using these bridges. This in turn, adds to traffic congestion and
accidents that involve pedestrians.
For the purposes of this research evaluation, the site selections are around the city of Kuala Lumpur.¬¬
Background to the Study
Pedestrian bridges may offer safety and protection to the users but pedestrians often avoid using these facilities. According to the survey that has been
conducted by H. Rizati, Siti Zaharah Ishak, Intan Rohani Endut (2013), this is due to several factors. They are the added travel distance, the location of
the facility, and the vehicle volume. Pedestrians prefer to utilize pedestrian

Ray Bradbury's Short Story 'The Pedestrian'
Ray Bradbury the author of the short story "The Pedestrian" purpose behind writing this unique story, was to show his audience the threat of
technology and how in the future it may potentially take over our lives completely. In a city of 3 million people the crime rates have plummeted so
dramatically that there is only one police car left. The author paints a picture of empty streets, dreary houses and dark windows with people stuck
inside all night glued to their T.V screens. "It was not unequal to walking through a graveyard for only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in
the flickers behind the windows." People have become so addicted to TVs that they don't emerge from their homes during the night, due to this the

The Pedestrian By Ray Bradbury Analysis
Society provides a constant pressure to be a certain cookie cutter definition that only includes a single shape in the whole box. Stepping out of the
desired image is seen as wrong as the balance and harmony society tries to maintain is unstable. In "The Pedestrian" written by Ray Bradbury
emphasizes the idea of a collective group pushing a single individual into conforming to their expectations as the main character Leonard Mead
demonstrates this struggle. Leonard Mead tries to conform to society through the symbolic change of shoes. Moreover, by not fulfilling society's
complete regulations Leonard is soon isolated and pushed away from the community which limited Leonards mental self as he was alway alone. The
Pedestrian reflects on the significant principle to pursue your goals and desires as it influences on an individual's eccentricity that makes people
diverse even if it does not follow society's regulations. Furthermore, Mr. Leonard Mead struggles with being different and his personal desires are
viewed as abnormal since society fears the unknown consequently abusing the individual for being different. In addition, methods that further enhances
the barrier Ray Bradbury set between Leonard Mead versus the rest of society is the motif of light versus dark and Ray Bradbury's short story
illustrates conflicts between pursuing a personal desire and choosing to conform influences a person's individuality as a result of society's regulations.

Who Is The Narrator In The Pedestrian
Characters in narrative fiction often encounter social issues within society causing them to question the morality of society as well as their own.
Leonard Mead, the protagonist in "The Pedestrian" recognizes that he is alone in his world of 2053 for not adapting to a life overwhelmed by
technology. Society is so immersed in technology it impedes social interaction. A policeman arrests Leonard Mead for walking at night because
that is a rare sight in this futuristic society. Ray Bradbury describes the people as dead and their houses as tombs. The people are not even
functional; they are essentially empty bodies. Leonard Mead is the only person who actually lives a life that is worthwhile. There is no individuality
among the citizens. There is very limited communication due to the obsession with technology. Bradbury alludes to the dangers of technology.
Leonard Mead questions his way of life because he is punished for taking time to "stop and smell the flowers." He isolates himself for his decision of

Characterization is one of biggest elements in Bradburys story. Mr.Mead is a very interesting character. Mr. Mead shows different emotions
throughout this short story. Mr. Mead loves nature and the beauty of the outside unlike the other citizens. Mead will talk to the houses, because he
knows the people inside will not respond. He will say things like, "Hello, how are you?" The citizens of the city never come outside nor do they
see nature, because they are busy using technology/devices. Mr. Mead is known for being not normal, or being weird. Everyone in the city is
known for being normal, because the normal thing to do is be glued to your device. The people do not go outside, they do not drive around, take
walks, or do other activities. Mr. Mead is not secluded from the outside world, he goes out and does activities. There is only one police car in the
whole city, because there is no crime or activity outside. So, there is no need to waste money and other resources on something that would be a
waste of space. Maybe one day people will finally relize Mr. Mead is normal and has a great impact on the city and

Ray Bradbury The Pedestrian Analysis

story "The Pedestrian" By Ray Bradbury, loves taking nightly walks. Mr. Mead is in
a new, young, futuristic society. "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury depicts the future the
best out of all the stories.
The overuse of technology today affects our everyday family values. On
one of his walks Mr. Mead pops his head into a house and yells," What's up tonight on

because everyone else is watching television at night. Technology taking over family
values is just one example of how technology is taking over our lives.
Technology is causing people health problems as well as taking over our family
values. During one of his walks Mr. Mead thinks to himself, "He had never met another
person walking, not one in all that time" (97). This quote relates to society today
because young kids are being stereotyped for just sitting around and playing videogames
or online games. All the people aren't walking they are all watching television in their
dark house. After Mr. Mead was arrested for walking he was being driven to a mental
institution when, "they passed one house...this house had all the lights on, that's my (Mr.
Mead) house" (100). This house was the exact opposite of all the others. The houses
that are dark symbolize the people with sedentary lifestyles because everyone in there is
stuck on technology. If the houses are dark they are just sitting around inside watching
TV instead of being active. Technology affects our everyday lives and becomes more and

Unintended Consequences Of Technology In The Pedestrian By...
As Albert Einstein once wisely stated "I fear that one day technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots."
In the book The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury the whole town has fallen victim to the unintended consequences of the inappropriate use of technology.
Leonard Mead , a middle aged man, is the only person in the town that ever is out of his home after 8 o'clock in the evening; he enjoys walking alone
down the streets in the night. When he first started walking at night, he often saw other people who also were walking. Slowly over the years the
amount of people he saw decreased until it finally reached no human contact at all. If technology continues to be over used, as it obviously is in the
story, it will lead to unintended consequences in the future such as destruction of society or severe changes to society.
If we continue to overuse technology, It will negatively affect society. When Mr.Mead is walking he comes to the two main highways in town and
does not see any cars on them " During the day it was a thunderous surge of cars, the gas stations open, a great insect rustling and a ceaseless
jockeying for position as the scarabbeetles, a faint incense puttering from their exhausts, skimmed homeward to the far directions. But now these
highways, too, were like streams in a dry season, all stone and bed and moon radiance"(174). All of the people in the town hurry home from work and

Mr. Mead And The Police Car In The Pedestrian By Ray Bradbury
The characterizations of Mr. Mead and the Police Car in the story "The Pedestrian" draws a clear distinction between our society and the futuristic
society that the author, Ray Bradbury, intended to create in his story. This allows the readers to better understand what the author's perspective of a
world where humans rely too much on technology is like. An example would be the characterization of Mr. Mead as a weird person in the futuristic
society because he enjoys walking. This could be seen in Mr. Mead's conversation with the police, ""Walking, just walking, walking?" "Yes, sir."
"Walking where? For what?" "Walking for air. Walking to see." "Your address!" "Eleven South Saint James Street." "And there is air in your house,

Mr. Mead can clearly be described as an odd ball in this society because he walks for the fresh air despite the usage of Air conditioners and viewing
screen, but his actions are normal in our society and he would be described by the readers as normal. This makes readers better understand the
author's perspective on how people relied on technology such as Air conditioners and viewing screen to the extent where they will not come out
for a walk at all, and that those like Mr Mead are weird in that society. Another example is the characterization of the police car as a machine,
programed to arrest humans with regressive behaviors. The characterization is clear when the Police car ask Mr. Mead for his name, "Your
name?" said the police car in a metallic whisper" (page 2) and when he told Mr. Mead that he is taking him "To the Psychiatric Center for Research on
Regressive Tendencies" (page 2). This makes readers picture a world that relied on advance technologies, as robotic police cars are used to arrest
people with regressive behavior. Also explains that Mr Mead is considered to be regressive, and that machines are starting to take over people's lives
as everything seems to be controlled by

To Start, Bradbury mostly describes Mr. Meadwalking the streets in a darker time of day. The dark can signal being alone, and feeling indifferent in
a certain place. The own, obsessed with electronics, thought differently of Mr. Mead because he favored nature. For example, when Mr. Mead
walks he changed to sneakers because his other shoes had a hard heal, "and lights might click on and faces appear," when they heard him passing
(3). Others thought it was different for a man to walk the streets in order to receive fresh air. Secondly, Mr. Mead was walking and came across a
police car. With the short story taking place in 2053, it was a driver less car. "This one lone car wandering and wandering the empty streets,"
happened to be the car to represent symbolism in the short story(12). Written in 1951, "The Pedestrian" predicted driver less cars in the future of
2053. It also hints to the fact that the government had more control than needed. Thirdly, Mr mead describes walking through his town as "Walking
through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind the windows'(2). Mr. Mead was the only 'alive'
person living in his society, while the others take an effect of being brain dead from the cause of technology overrule. With updated technology, the
community in which Mr. Mead lives in will spend less and less time outside, making Mr. Mead seem different from the eyes of the cities view. In all,
by using symbolism with time of day, new technology, and living ways of the society, Bradbury impacts readers view on

Analysis Of The Pedestrian By Ray Bradbury

  • 1. Analysis Of The Pedestrian By Ray Bradbury Can conforming to a culture prove beneficial to one's character? Or will it have permanent, damaging effects on an individual's state of mind? "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury is an introduction to the idea of the conflict between personal desire, and an obligation to behave according to the social norm. Ray Bradbury antagonizes a world of technological advancements. It is valuable to note that the story is a reflection of Bradbury's concerns of an automotive world. These concerns stem from the endangerment of writing as a consequence of technological innovations, since new technology comes hand–in–hand with new forms of media. This explains Bradbury's antagonization of a world that relies on technology considering the inevitable decision between conforming to ever–evolving standards, or fulfilling personal desires. In this case, Bradbury had the choice of either adapting to new advancements and self–expressing through modern forms of media, while sacrificing the enjoyment as well as the familiarity of future work, or refusing to conform and sacrificing success. The standardization of television was an endangerment of professional writing, which the author expressed in the story. For instance, the robot implied that writing has become obsolete by stating that the protagonist had no profession. The short story "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury is an explicit representation of the conflict between personal desire and having to conform to society. An individual who refuses to submit to the pressure of a dominant culture will become cast out. This introduces a conflict between personal desire, and yielding to the surrounding civilization. Mr. Mead was cast out as a direct consequence of refusing to adopt the behavioural standards of other members of the society. This becomes evident when Mr. Mead's is cast out by a police officer, and transported to "the Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies." Mr. Mead is also cast out by fellow citizens when, through the windows on the street "faces appear and an entire street be startled by the passing of a lone figure" when carrying out what Mr. Mead "most dearly loved to do." In Bradbury's dystopian society, being an outcast has dire consequences. Thus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Pedestrian Television В– The Equivalent Of Death In "The Pedestrian" it seems as though everything has some kind of connection to death. Ray Bradbury makes so many references to words that make us feel as though we are staring down death straight in the eyes. Words such as "phantoms" and "frozen" lead us to believe that the world of 2056 is a very chill and alone one. We feel as though Leonard Mead is the only alive thing left roaming the earth. There are a lot of examples in "The Pedestrian" that we can compare to everyday occurrences. Such as when Leonard Mead said he couldn't pull himself away from the light. We see this happen in everyday life. We know something might lead to danger, yet we are still drawn to it out of curiosity and human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This I find rather ironic because young children and infants, don't have the need for TV. Sure, they will watch it if you turn it on and set them in front of it, but they don't choose to. Children would rather play outdoors in the sand and trees, not spend all their time in front of a television screen. This comes to my conclusion that Ray Bradbury somewhat incorporated death into his short story "The Pedestrian" whether he meant to or not. What I do know for a fact is, that if we keep continuing to let technology rule our lives, we aren't going to have any lives left. There has to be a bigger purpose to life then being born to wake up every morning just to turn the television on, and dying knowing we didn't miss a single ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Ray Bradbury's The Pedestrian In 2014, a statistic from Recode Research found that 90% of United States households have three or more technological devices pinging in the internet. Devices such as phones and tablets are so psychologically powerful that they not only change how humans act, but how humans communicate. The short story titled, The Pedestrian, written by Ray Bradbury, offers a glance into the future, depicting Leonard Mead, who takes long walks every evening in a society that only lives for watching tv. In another story called August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains, also written by Bradbury, displays life within a technologically advanced household. A third story also written by Bradbury titled The Veldt, is based upon an interactive nursery within a technologically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The use of communication technology allows humans to get used to doing less. Sherry Turkle, a TED Talk speaker, informs people of how technology causes people to be connected, but alone. Her analysis of solitude shows the audience that humanity is unable to reach out to other people and form real attachments. Turkle states "People can't get enough of each other, if and only if they can have each other at a distance, in amounts that they can control. I call it The Goldilocks Effect." The Goldilocks Effect refers to the habits of humans wanting each other not too close, not too far, but just right. This effect, and other consequences from communication technology, proves that humans expect more from technology than from each other. Humans find it easier to keep to themselves rather than to participate in social interaction. The continued use of technological devices encourages distance between humans. Communication technology may never be used the intended way as a helping aid, rather, it is used as a replacement to human interaction and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. This includes the Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Toronto where frequent trucks enter and exit to remove excavated soil (***Special Lecture***), stopping traffic on Galbraith Road and preventing tour buses from enterring. On the other hand, outside the city, construction has far less of an impact as there are often multiple lanes for traffic, and little or no pedestrian traffic. When building in Toronto then, it is important to minimize construction's effect on pedestrians, vehicle traffic, and local residents if present, since these parties are all impacted by the decisions made on site. In our site visits, we examined many sites at varying stages of completion, and noticed how some of them dealt with construction's effect on the surroundings, as will be discussed here: Yorkville Plaza II (YP2)– 21 Yorkville Avenue– Developer: Camrost–Felcorp This site is located in the heart of Toronto's affluent Yorkville neighbourhood, and will be the home of a 40 –storey condo building. It has a luffing crane on site, so overhead protection had to be installed for pedestrians on Avenue Road in the form of wooden boards. These wooden boards were placed on ... • 5. Compare And Contrast Accidental Time, And 'The Pedestrian' Mexico City and Los Angeles, two immense cities of very different characteristics and cultures, are brought together by Octavio Paz's "Identical Time" and Ray Bradbury's "The Pedestrian". Because through featuring certain individuals as particularly alive in their cities, they each have, in common, a theme of aliveness: in "Identical Time", the old man is alive in the busy dawn of the Mexico City, and in "The Pedestrian", the protagonist Mr. Mead is alive in the quiet night of a future Los Angeles envisioned by Bradbury. Though manifested as stillness in "Identical Time" and, quite the contrary, motion in "The Pedestrian", aliveness signifies in both, likewise, as living a human life freely in the present and through the beauty of nature. Furthermore, with their portrayals of the individual's struggles and quests to be alive in their own cities, the two pieces speak together to how both cities, and indeed city lives in general, might hinder our own aliveness and, by that, humanity. In "Identical Time", aliveness is attributed to a state of stillness, against the backdrop of constant movement that is Mexico City. Mexico City is personified and portrayed as under movement and action in the very first stanza: "turning on its shadow / searching always searching itself" (Paz 1). The city is moving and "turning", and the repetition of the word "searching" indicates that the city, or rather its people, are in active and eager pursuits – of themselves, their dreams and futures, ... • 7. Walking At Night In The Pedestrian By Ray Bradbury In The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury, Leonard Mead is ostracized for walking at night, to the extent of being arrested. This is symbolic of the ignoring and shunning and even the legal troubles that those who go against the main idea purported in society face. It is also symbolic of those that dare to be active thinkers in a passive thinking world. The powers in charge in Leonard Mead's world believe that him walking every night could upset their social stability. In the short story, this takes the form of the police arresting him and taking him to a psychiatric centre. This ostracizes the Pedestrian and makes him be seen as a social pariah. Leonard Mead also believes that his society will ostracize him if they found out he was walking at night. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Character And Conflict In The Cop And The Anthem, By Ray... In both short stories, "The Cop and the Anthem" By O. Henry and " The Pedestrian" By Ray Bradbury, both authors used character and conflict. in the short stories, the characters used have a lonely personality to them which causes conflict between misunderstood police. The conflict, both involves something or someone missing in their life, though neither do not mind and going through with life somehow. The story of "The Cop and the Anthem" is about a man named Soapy trying to figure out how to get into jail since he was homeless and need a place to go for the winter season. He tries his best to get thrown in jail but never does succeed. However, when he finally gives up, a policeman sends the homeless man to jail for the 3 months; just long enough to be saved by the brutal winter. In the story of "The Pedestrian", Mr. Leonard Mead has no one to be with him. He drowns in his sorrows by walking on the street at night. For the past ten years, he had been walking on the same route every night. He pasts by other families' homes and wishing he could have the same. A police car comes by and assume Mr. Leonard Mead was doing illegal actives. The car sends him to the Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies. Both O. Henry and Bradbury used character and conflict to communicate the theme of the short stories. The central idea of the short story, " The Cop and the Anthem" is to let fate happen and bring you to what you desire most. O. Henry uses the literary elements, character and conflict, throughout the story. " He was filled with sadness. He was still free. Was he going to remain free forever?" This shows the character of Soapy determine to get thrown into jail to stay away from the cold, three month winter. The conflict, preventing Soapy from succeeding for a trip to jail, was he was too desperate to go to jail, and the police did not believe him. "And Soapy, sick at heart, walked slowly away. He had failed two times." and " Soapy felt a hand on his arm. He looked quickly around into the broad face of a cop.'What are you doing hanging around here?' asked the cop. 'Nothing,' said Soapy. 'You think I believe that?' said the cop. Full of his new strength, Soapy began to argue. And it is not wise to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Suspense In Ray Bradbury's 'The Pedestrian' In one of his most well–known short stories "The Pedestrian", Ray Bradbury utilizes the character of Leonard Mead to build suspense through a town where the setting is described almost grave–like. This mysterious man Leonard Mead decides to go outside the norm of his society and take a walk around town instead of staying inside. Ray Bradbury continues to builds on this suspense when the police officer pulls him over for being the only one outside. In Ray Bradbury's "The Pedestrian", he uses the setting to place his readers into a dystopia where the world is dictated by people who are dumbfounded at the sight of seeing someone roam the streets, and he uses a mysterious mood to build suspense in his reader's minds. At the start of the short story the writer sets the scene for the reader, both in time and place but also by describing the kind of society that exists in the future world. • 11. Death of the Literate World in Ray Bradbury's The Pedestrian Ray Bradbury's short story, "The Pedestrian," shows the not–too–distant future in a very unfavorable light. The thinking world has been eaten away by the convenience that is high technology. This decay is represented by the fate that befalls Leonard Mead. Though only an isolated incident, it foreshadows the end of thinking, literate society. The world in the year 2053 is populated by people who are more dead than alive. Their technology has made them very lazy. Walking has become obsolete, as the title of the story indicates. Leonard Mead is not a pedestrian; he is, in a city of three million people (105), the pedestrian. Walking had become so uncommon, that the sidewalk was "vanishing under flowers and grass" (104–105). Bradbury ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Leonard Mead hears nothing but "whisperings and murmurs" (104) coming from the open windows he passes. The human voice has become so scarce, Mead hesitates each time he hears one (104). Clearly Mead yearns to have any sort of conversation with a real person. Reading has also become a casualty within the technologically advanced world of the twenty–first century. Mead was a writer, but "he hadn`t written in years" (105). Dependence on television had created a world in which "magazines and books didn't sell anymore" (105). Movie versions of books were as close as these people came to reading. The atmosphere is gloomy, with several references to a dying civilization. First, the story is set in November. It is the beginning of the end. Secondly, Bradbury describes walking through Mead's neighborhood as "not unequal to walking through a graveyard" (104). Another reference to the doomed society is Bradbury's description of the houses as being "tomblike buildings" (104). But among this garbage heap of humanity stands Leonard Mead, a kind of Anti–Christ. Mead represents the last of the thinking human beings. Bradbury's description of Mead as being "alone in this world of 2053, A.D., or as good as alone" (104) is a reference to this situation. It is significant that Mead begins his walk "in a westerly direction" (104). Like the sun passing from view, so is the walking, talking, thinking man. Mead is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Pedestrian Essay Utopia and dystopia: Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" is a dramatic illustration of the dangers of living in a world where contact with nature is deemed so abnormal that even walking alone at night is a crime. The dystopian story revolves around the tale of a man named Leonard Mead, living during a time period not so far away from our own, in 2053 CE. In the story, a robotic police car is so suspicious of Mead's walking behavior during one pleasant night that he is taken away to a psychiatric hospital. In the new world, desiring televised rather than real experience is considered 'normal.' People only venture out during the day when it is required for their work. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In many communities, walking 'behavior' does appear to be unusual, because it looks so uncommon, despite the natural physiological aspect of walking. Riding in a car is seen as more normal, just like a robotic policeman is seen as more normal in the Bradbury story. Today, people do still walk, but often on a moving conveyor belt at the gym, rather in a real environment. This takes people away from nature and a sense of being part of something larger than themselves. Although Bradbury does not specifically discuss the physical risks of inactivity, the nation's climbing obesity rate is clear evidence of the fact that Americans are moving less and instead turning to sedentary pastimes to unwind. From Bradbury's perspective in time, the dangers of television were the greatest risk posed to enjoying hands–on, real world activities. Today, there are even more varied sedentary distractions, spanning from the Internet, to mobile phones, to video games. In the modern world, we are increasingly categorized by our technological devices. Our cellphones, cars, and computers define our identities, rather than our bodies. We are losing the ability to amuse ourselves in the outside world. But it is our connection to nature, stripped of technology, which is essential to our individuality, not the programs we watch on television–or the appearance of our cellphones. Bradbury's dystopian story provides a warning that is clearly not being heeded. Although we may have more technological ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. A Research On Pedestrian Detection The four papers about pedestrian detection we chose to summarize were great and informative, all suggested useful techniques and new ideas in deep learning for pedestrian detection. However, there were few open issues or room for improvement in some of the papers. Here are some of the ideas we suggested to resolve these issues in each paper. Joint Deep Learning for Pedestrian Detection (UDN) Even though the Unified Deep Net (UDN) method learned features by designing hidden layers for the Convolutional Neural Network such that features, deformable parts, occlusions, and classification can be jointly optimized, one of its problems is it treats pedestrian detection as a single binary classification task, which is not able to capture rich pedestrian variations. For example, the method is not able to distinguish pedestrians from hard negatives due to their visual similarities. This problem can be resolved by jointly optimizing pedestrian detection with auxiliary semantic tasks, such as including pedestrian attributes and scene attributes, which was represented in our previous report. Another problem with the UDN method is it did not explicitly model mixture of templates for each body parts, and did not depress the influence of background clutters. Thus, the method could be improved by explicitly model the complex mixture of visual appearance at multiple levels. For example, some extra layers can be added into the hierarchy of the UDN, so that at each feature level, this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Film Adaptation In Ray Bradbury's 'The Pedestrian' The Pedestrian The PBS article, on film adaptation, discusses the difference between written text and film and the struggle of adapting a book into a movie. Statistically, 65 percent of all novels are adapted into a film. Stories and novels rely on the narrator to tell the story whereas, films don't usually have a narrator. Films tend to be way shorter then a novel or story because one frame can be worth six pages of description. Films have a pro side and a con side, one con is that a film takes away your own personal perception while with any written literature, one has their own perception of a certain scenario, what a character looks like, etc. Unlike written literacy, a film has certain limits, for example, time, interaction, money, and... If narration were to be used in the film, one could infer that Leonard Mead is lonely, odd, and isolated from society because he is the only one that walks. Why does the robot police car arrest him without any specific reason? If there had been a policeman inside the car, he would not have been arrested. He is arrest because the machine police does not know his feelings. He wants to see nature and wants fresh air, but robot police car does not know what he wants. This story suggests that if the world continues the progress that it is now then we will become no more than humans who are doing nothing with our lives. It shows how people would seclude themselves from others and begin to stop caring for others. Is this actually a possibility in the future? In this short story there is a man by the name of Mr. Mead who doesn't necessarily do the same as everyone else. Imagery is one of the best used literary devices in this short story. Imagery means "The use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions, or ideas." (http://dictionary.reference.com/define/imagery) In The Pedestrian Bradbury tells us that Mr. Mead's house "had all of its electric lights brightly lit, every window s loud yellow illumination, square and warm in the cool darkness." (51) This story also uses imagery when it talks about the police car and says, "...peered into the back seat, which was a little cell, a little black jail with bars. It smelled of riveted steel. It smelled of harsh antiseptic; it smelled too clean and hard and metallic. There was nothing soft there." Another very well used literary device in this story is personification. • 17. A Brief Note On Pedestrian Detection Of Surveillance Pedestrian Detection in Surveillance Abstract Pedestrian detection is fragmented as there are numerous algorithms used in different research. This research aims to provide an overview to understand the current state of pedestrian detection as well as analyse the challenges, effectiveness, accuracy and cost benefit of different approaches used in surveillance and how current challenges are being tackled. Introduction Pedestrian detection is a key problem in computer vision. There are a number of ways that makes it difficult to achieve without faults due to the differences in colour, motion, orientation and poses of individual human beings but also segregation of the background which may or may not be cluttered as well as other moving objects that just might get in the way. Even though it is a difficult matter it is still a major research areas as there a great implications of perfecting the system. Key application could include in the field of surveillance, robotics as well as a tool in vehicular safety. It can also be used in a commercial apects as businesses would be able to count the number of pedestrians creating a flow statistics for optimizing their business. For it to be effective it should be able to handle emerging complex scenarios such as speed of detection for vehicles to enable them to avoid or stop immediately and the accuracy in detecting pedestrian through a crowd for businesses. In "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury, he talks about Leonard Meads nightly activities when he says"on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared"(Bradbury 1). This quote is illustrating the idea of how Leonard Mead's lack of interaction with others and how he observes the way people interact influences him to be different from others. Without the lack of interaction he has, his choice to go out and walk at night wouldn't really be as much of a unique thing, but due to the fact that most people choose to sit... This quote is expressing how Tan felt toward the things her mother made her do and the things that came from her always following her mother's "orders". This is important to note because, her whole life she looked up to her mother and always listened but after she was embarrassed in front of a large crowd and her mother kept pressing her to do better and to do things he didn't want to, she was influenced to do everything she could to defy her mother rather than have a peaceful and normal relationship with her. • 19. The Pedestrian By Leonard Mead The Light in the Dark In any given situation, individuals experience conflicts when pursuing a personal desire as particular desires do not conform to the rules that societies standardize for individuals. Individuals quickly adapt to the modernization of the advancement of humanity and technology. Nevertheless, there may be a controversy deciding between obeying society's regulations of consistently keeping up with the innovative contemporary behaviour or sticking with subjective or independent aspirations. In the short story The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury, Leonard Mead's complication between pursuing his personal desire and choosing to conform creates an issue with the development as an individual. Symbols within the story that further highlighted the distinct difference between personal desires and deciding to conform include Mr. Mead's shoes, television, and the houses. Moreover, each symbol that was stated demonstrates a diverse idiosyncratic characteristic about the protagonist as does the psychological components of Mr. Mead such as word choice, speech, behaviour and mental processes. However, throughout the story, the protagonist, Mr. Leonard Mead is exemplified through a third person limitedpoint of view as it gradually illuminates the understanding that society's need for conformation and an individual's needs may produce a consequential disagreement of discrepancy. • 20. Technology Vs. Human Interaction In The Pedestrian By Ray... The piece of literature I have chosen is The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury. It's about a not so far dystopian future where nobody leaves their house and television is more important than human interaction. This story revealed to me that people will chose technology and the comfort of their home over human interaction. People lost their sense of interaction. It also revealed to me that in the natural world being the slightest different can cause suspicion and problems. In the story, the narrator, Leonard Mead, is taking his nightly walk around the city. As usual is around 8:30 and nobody is out. He glances through the windows of nearly every house he passes and sees the flicker of the television on the curtains. He had been walking everyday for 10 years and not once did he see anybody outside. Today if you were to walk outside at 8:30pm you would run into at least 10 people. In this future everybody prefers to be in their house watching their TVs or some other electronical device. The "cop" asked him what his profession was and Mr. Mead replied "I guess you could call me a writer." The cop replied "No profession" insisting that writing wasn't a profession. The cop then asked Mr. Mead why he was out of his house. He replied "Walking for air. Walking just to see." The cop told him his house had air conditioner and a viewing screen for a reason. • 21. Individuality In The Pedestrian And Fahrenheit 451 By Ray... In life, it is commonly stated that "A man who doesn't think for himself, does not think at all." This statement is supported in "The Pedestrian" and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In Fahrenheit 451 the main character finds himself bound to the expectations of society and robotically follows every order that is given to him without second thoughts. This leads to him being unknowingly unhappy and having a hollow existence. But as the story progressed the main character became more aware of the person that he truly was, and when he had finally discovered that person, he was truly happy. On the contrary, In "The Pedestrian" a lone individual who is different from society is able to think for himself, thus giving him freedom from the bonds of society and the ability to embrace his individuality. Making him free and happy. In both stories, we see how individuality releases people from the shackles of their society and finally allows them to be truly happy with who they are. In order to discourage automobile dependency, and increase pedestrian activities particularly for short trips, the government has begun to promote non–motorized travel options by improving pedestrian facilities that promote an assured level of convenience, comfort, and security for potential users. One of the facilities that have been provided by the government is the pedestrian bridge. A pedestrian bridge or footbridge is a bridge constructed for pedestrians and sometimes for cyclists and bikers as well. It reduces the conflicts of traffic flow between the pedestrians and the vehicles by separating them. Hence, it helps in overcoming accidents and offers safety.
