TRAVEL STORY
JUXTAPOSE YOUR ‘NORMAL’ WITH A NEW EXPERIENCE.
DESCRIPTION
Write about an experience you have had traveling. If in doubt, choose a
location as far from your home as possible. Use this as an opportunity to
juxtapose the known with the unknown; explore your “normal” life through
the lens of something “unusual” or new (to you). Keep in mind that just
because something is “weird” to you doesn’t mean it is objectively “weird;”
it might be someone else’s normal. So, the goal here is not to judge or
exoticize something unusual to you, but rather to use it as an opportunity to
learn something new about yourself and the world, to grow as a world
citizen, and to learn how to use juxtaposition in writing.
This assignment will require some casual research. Use at least two sources
to help you expand your perspective and jog your memory of detail: one
source needs to be written by a person from the place you are writing
about, and the other can be written by anyone. These sources don’t have to
be written, but could be video or podcast. For example, if you are writing
about a time when you traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, find a source written by
a person who was raised in Oaxaca, not just a guidebook for tourists.
