1. Strategic Planning Workshops
On April 24 and April 30, Ms. Arshi Aziz, a well-respected
corporate trainer, held workshops on ‘Performance
Management and Strategies’ and ‘Plans and Sustainability’.
This workshop was attended by Behbud Chairpersons,
Co-Chairpersons, Coordinators, Principals and staff in the
conference room at Behbud Complex, Clifton. These were
held to address PCP requirements and Behbud Advisors’
recommendation of re-visiting project strategic plans and
goals as well as introducing structured appraisals of
employees. The members found this interactive workshop
very beneficial. We thank Arshi Aziz for volunteering her
time and being a Friend of Behbud.

Congratulations to Our Students!
The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) Matric
Exams were taken by our Behbud Secondary School
Students, all with passing grades. The result is A+ 6%, A
44%, B 40% and C 10%. We applaud the hard work of our
teachers and students on this achievement.

A Message from the
President
This is just to fill up space! was organized
by Behbud Association, Karachi on March
3rd at the Sunset Club, Phase 2 Ext. DHA.
There were stalls showcasing Behbud’s
own products, produced by women
trained by Behbud vocational centers.
They included clothing, table linen,
leather items, plants and baked goods. Other stalls holders
also displayed their wares for sale— shoes, clothing,
jewelry, crafts and much more. A top notch Food Court did
a brisk business while the Kids’ Area was going full swing.
There were crafts, balloons, story-telling, magic shows, fun
competitions, pool & boats and trampoline for Behbud’s
young patrons.
To support us, celebrities such as Marina Khan, Hina
Bayat,Nadia Hussain, Khushbakht Shujaat, Shahzad Sheikh
and YBQ attended the event. The Spring Fiesta had a
whopping 167 stalls in total, a record breaking attendance
of almost 10,000 people and lots of fun fun fun fun fun.
The event was promoted extensively on social media and
had celebrity endorsements by Bushra Ansari, Chef Shai,
Ainy Jaffry and Shahnaz Ramzi. There were adverts and
giveaways on FM91, our radio partner, as well as scrolls on
TV1. We would like to thank Helium, our activation partner,
for extending their services and helping us at every step. To
support us, celebrities such as Marina Khan, Hina Bayat,
Nadia Hussain, Khushbakht Shujaat, Shahzad Sheikh and

2. Stitch A Tree with Karachi Biennale
Behbud is participating in an upcoming Karachi Biennale
event. Our staff attended a two-day workshop on June
26 & June 27 at the British Council where KB’19 artist,
Alice Kettle demonstrated various stitches and knots for a
unique stitching project called ‘Stitch a Tree’. Behbud
staff and members prepared 1500 swatches with tree
motifs which are being stitched together to make a large
collage artwork for display at KB’19. This collage
symbolizes the beauty and harmony of working together
and will go on display October 26 and will be showcased
around the world.
Karachi Biennale is a visionary platform aiming to create a
strong ‘Public Art presence’ in this city and to promote
creativity, innovation and criticality in the visual arts.
Working Towards Eradicating TB
On March 27, World TB day was celebrated with great
enthusiasm by Behbud Health Services along with students
of Behbud Boys Secondary School
A short program was arranged,. Speeches were made by
the President and Chairperson of Behbud Health Services .
The older students presented a multimedia presentation of
their outreach initiative in their community in which they
try to create awareness about Behbud’s TB testing and
treatment clinic. The younger students had made
inspirational drawings displayed in the auditorium,
depicting the ramifications of TB,
The guests gracing this occasion were Dr. Mehmooda
Shaheen of Provincial TB Control Program, esteemed
journalist Zubaida Mustafa and Dr Ghazala Ansari, who
helped establish TB DOTS Clinic in 2000.
Iqbal: An LRC Initiative to Develop the
Human Potential
Behbud Learning Resource Center (LRC) in collaboration
with a renowned scholar Khurram Ali Shafique, the recipient
of the Presidential Iqbal Award, conducted a 3-day
informative and reflective course on Iqbal’s Work, Thoughts
and Our Times. This Iqbal series is to give a platform to
access the ideas of a revered Pakistani intellectual and was
attended by nearly 50 participants. The Learning Resource
Center hopes to bring more seminars like this in the near
future.

A Success Story - Becoming an Engineer
At the age of 21, Ilyas, a determined youth from Shirin Jinnah
Colony dabbled in many low paying professions, to make ends
meet doing “mazdoori” work. However, he had higher goals for
himself, so enrolled in Behbud’s 6 month Electrician Course
certified by Sindh Board of Technical Education Board.
After the completion of this course and getting his certification,
he landed a good job which demanded computer knowledge.
Well aware of Behbud’s various vocational projects, Ilyas
enrolled at Behbud Computer Center.
Ilyas ihas carved a path for himself by availing the opportunities
provided by Behbud. Today at the age of 31, he is working as a
Senior Electrical Technician at Moxie International , a water
filtration company, and has just started his first semester in a
selective Electrical Engineering degree program at the Govt.
Polytechnic Institute. We wish him great success in all his future
endeavors.

3. Shop For A Cause
Two sales were held on May 4; one was at Tots to Teens
where the most sought-after children’s clothes were
exhibited and the other at the residence of a Behbud
Chairperson where in-demand items were sold. On Sep 4, a
Pre-loved sale was held at our Mehmoodabad Center.
We thank all our members and friends for coming out to
support Behbud and Shopping for a Cause.
Donation Boxes Around Town
In the ever expanding cosmopolitan city of Karachi, it is
imperative to showcase Behbud’s image all year round,
therefore a strategy was approved to place donation boxes
around town and to make it easier for people to give.
We are very Blessed that the following retail outlets willingly
agreed to display them: Agha Noor Karachi/UK, Amis
Supermarket, Amna Chaudhry Studio, Angies Salon, BBQ
Tonite, Coco 9, Esquires Coffee DMC, Image DMC, Hina
Siddiqui DDS, Koel Boutique, Maria’s Salon and Institute,
Mona J, Paradise Supermarket, Queens Beauty Salon,
SindLabs, and Sunny Medico. Our donation boxes will soon
be going to the Agha Noor outlets in Lahore, Islamabad and
Sialkot.
A special mention goes to Nadia Hussain Salon and Peng's
Salon for also displaying Behbud products for sale at their
salons.
Behbuds Film: Based On A True Story
Behbud achieved yet another milestone; our very first short
film which was produced by Pakistan's leading advertising
agency Adcom who conceptualized, scripted and
supervised the production of our film. Directed by Jamshed
Irani and produced by Seven Seas, the film is based on one
of the many success stories of Behbud beneficiaries.
The majority of the shoot took place onsite at our Behbud
Complex in Clifton where Behbud staff and members
worked with the film crew till late in the night.
We thank Adcom for providing their services probono, for
GeoTV, TV One and News One for broadcasting this film,
and everyone else who volunteered. It was well received
and has reached millions of views on just YouTube and
Facebook.
Obituary
Our dedicated volunteer, Mrs. Kathy Mirza passed away
August, 20 2019 in Lahore. She volunteered at Behbud’s
MCC for nearly 18 years. She will be dearly missed by her

Breast Cancer Awareness
First Lady, Samina Alvi’s task force for women
empowerment visited Behbud Complex, Clifton on March
27 to speak to our Industrial Home students, their mothers
and women from the neighboring areas about breast
cancer.
Guest speaker, Dr Diba Salahuddin spoke about
self-examinations, detecting signs of breast cancer and how
to take precautions. She also offered a closed room
examination to the attendees. Motivational talks were also
given by breast cancer survivors.
