Review: Louisiana’s History
We will review the first and second people who settled in LA
and about the Louisiana Purchase of 1803!
Louisiana History Review
First things first, how do historians learn about history?
Historians Learn about History From Two Types
of Sources:
Primary Sources
(1st Person:)
Written by people who
lived during that time
Secondary Sources (2nd Person):
Written after an event has
happened
Challenge: How do historians learn about history?
History of the People of Louisiana
1st Native
Americans/American Indians
2nd the French from France
Acadians: French Catholics from Canada
3rd the Spanish from Spain
4th United States of
America
The FIRST PEOPLE to inhabit LA:
American Indians/Native Americans
How did they live: They were HUNTERS AND GATHERERS:
PEOPLE WHO HUNTED, FISHED, AND ATE PLANTS FROM
THE LAND (We still do this today!)
Challenge: Who were the first people to inhabit LA? How did they live?
The SECOND PEOPLE to Inhabit LA:
French from France and the Acadians: French
speaking Catholics from Canada
In 1755, Acadians, French
Speaking Catholics were
forced to leave Canada
because the Canadians didn’t
like them.
They settled (or moved to) LA.
In 1682 the French came from France and
traveled to Louisiana.
Why? They wanted to build a
trading post because
New Orleans sits on the Mississippi River
which flows into the Gulf
Challenge: Why was New Orleans built by the French?
What were the French speaking Catholics called who came from Canada and settled in LA?
Economics:
Hey, Al! What are we going to
learn today?
We will learn about supply and demand and how
it affects our economy.
Review Economics Word of the Day:
Scarce/Scarcity
Shortness of
supply; not enough
When resources
are scarce,
prices increase
or go up
CHALLENGE: WHAT
HAPPENS TO THE COST
OF GOODS WHEN
RESOURCES ARE
SCARCE?
Economics Word of the Day:
Supply and Demand:
It affects everything we do and it’s a cycle
SUPPLY: The amount
of a good or service
available
DEMAND: the number
of people willing to
pay the price a
producer is asking
12
Supply and Demand
13
Supply and Demand
How Supply and Demand Work:
Low Demand
CHALLENGE: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COST OF GOODS
WHEN FEW CONSUMERS HAVE A DEMAND FOR IT?
WHEN FEW CONSUMERS HAVE A
DEMAND FOR A GOOD, PRICES ARE
LOWERED; THEY DECREASE
WHY? PRODUCERS LOWER PRICES TO
GET RID OF THE GOOD
WHEN PRICES ARE
LOWERED MORE PEOPLE
BUY A GOOD OR SERVICE
WHY? IT IS CHEAP
How Supply and Demand Work:
High Demand
CHALLENGE: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COST OF GOODS
WHEN MANY CONSUMERS DEMAND THEM?
WHEN MANY
CONSUMERS HAVE A
DEMAND FOR A GOOD,
PRICES INCREASE OR GO
UP
WHY? PRODUCERS SEE
MANY PEOPLE DEMAND
IT AND SO THEY WANT
TO MAKE MONEY AND
INCREASE THE PRICE
How Supply and Demand Work:
Abundance (a lot of something)
CHALLENGE: WHAT WILL MOST LIKELY HAPPEN IF
THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF A GOOD OR SERVICE?
IF THERE IS AN
ABUNDANCE OF A GOOD
OR SERVICE PRICES
DECREASE BECAUSE
THERE IS SO MUCH OF
IT!
WHY? PRODUCERS
WANT TO GET RID OF
THE EXTRA GOOD AND
SERVICE
How Supply and Demand Work:
Competition
CHALLENGE: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PRODUCERS
COMPETE FOR CONSUMER’S MONEY?
ECONOMIC COMPETITION:
WHEN PRODUCERS ARE TRYING
TO WIN CONSUMERS
WHY?
WHEN PRODUCERS SEE A
DEMAND FOR A GOOD OR
SERVICE, THEY BEGIN
COMPETING FOR THE
CONSUMER’S MONEY.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN
PRODUCERS COMPETE FOR
CONSUMERS?
THEY OPEN SHOPS THAT
PROVIDE THE SAME GOOD OR
SERVICE AT LOWER PRICES.

Review: Civics
Civics: the study of government and how it runs
Why? Our government makes laws that tell us how to
behave. If we break the law, there are consequences
There are 3 Branches of Government
Branch 1: Legislative Branch
* Made up of Congress(House of Representatives & the
Senate)
* MAKES LAWS
Branch 2: Executive Branch
*Made up of the President
*CARRIES OUT LAWS
*MAKES SURE PEOPLE OBEY THE LAWS
Branch 3: Judicial
*Made up of 9 Supreme Court Judges
*EXPLAINS AND DECIDES IF LAWS ARE FAIR
*PUNISHES PEOPLE WHO BREAK THE LAW
How People in the Government are Chosen
They are ELECTED:
*People in the government are
elected by U.S. citizens like us
*Citizens VOTE for who they want
to be in the government
*Citizens VOTE during an ELECTION
People with the HIGHEST
PERCENTAGE OF VOTES WINS
What Services the U.S. Government
and State Governments Provide:
Role of the Government
Repair roads and
highways for safe travel:
Provide driver’s licenses
Provide schools for people
to learn in: Provide
resources for schools
How the
Government pays
for these things:
By collecting
TAXES from
citizens, like us!
What are Rights, Laws, and Rules
Rights: a
freedom that is
protected
Laws: something
that tells you how
to behave and are
enforced by
government
Rule: tells you
what is or is
not allowed
Challenge: How are laws different from rules?
Laws are different from rules because the government
makes laws, but people and groups can’t.
25
Let’s Play A Law or Not a Law?
Do not spit.
Sing the national anthem everyday.
Speak in complete sentences.
Obey the speed limit.
Do not yell at others.
Sit in SPARK.
Hey, Ben, what are we going to learn today?
WE WILL REVIEW HOW TRANSPORTATION AND
TECHNOLOGY HAVE CHANGED OVER TIME
Invention: something thought of in
the mind and then created in real life
Why: to improve how people live
It All Starts With Scientific Inventions
How We Move from One Place to Another:
A History of Transportation
BACK THEN around the 1800s:
NOW 2015:
Walk Ride Horses Ride in Wagons
A History of Technology:
Important Inventions
Challenge: Name one important invention and how it has
helped us.
A History of Technology: The Internet
Challenge: How has the internet changed our lives?
*We are always socially
connected to others: our families
and friends are only an instagram
away from us
*We are connected to the world;
we can find the news of what’s
happening everywhere
How has the
internet changed
our lives?
31
Consumers: Spending Our Money Wisely

PRICE TO SAVE MONEY!
CHALLENGE: WHAT SHOULD YOU DO BEFORE
BUYING ANYTHING YOU NEED OR WANT?
32
Consumers: How to Shop Around
YOU WORK HARD FOR YOUR MONEY, SO YOU
BETTER SHOP AROUND!!
YOU WILL SAVE MONEY THAT WAY!
33
Consumers: How to Shop Around
*VISIT DIFFERENT STORES TO COMPARE
PRICES (DIFFERENT PRODUCERS WILL HAVE
DIFFERENT PRICES)
*LOOK ONLINE TO COMPARE PRICES (DIFFERENT
PRODUCERS WILL HAVE DIFFERENT PRICES)
*FIND COUPONS TO HELP YOU SAVE MONEY
ON AN ITEM AND GET IT CHEAPER!
*WAIT FOR A DECREASE IN PRICE (A SALE!)
SHOPPING AROUND ALLOWS YOU TO SAVE MONEY!
CHALLENGE: WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN SAVE
MONEY?
34

has $400 dollars to spend. He goes to Walmart
and sees a laptop for $550. Next, he goes to
Best Buy and sees a laptop for $375. Then, he
goes to the Apple Store and learns if he waits
two weeks, a laptop will be on sale for $225.
What did Mr. Williams learn while shopping
for a new laptop?
