Setelah menyelesaikan pendidikan sarjananya di California Institute Of Technology, ia pindah ke Cornell University untuk mengambil gelar doktor. Di sana, ia bertemu dengan David M. Lee dan Robert C. Richardson. Bersama dua koleganya tersebut, ia melakukan penelitian selama bertahun-tahun sampai menemukan satu fenomena yang menghebohkan dunia ilmiah, yaitu superfluiditas. Superfluiditas tersebut terjadi ketika helium-3 didinginkan mendekati suhu nol mutlak (–273,15°C). Pada suhu tersebut, helium-3 tidak lagi memiliki viskositas dan friksi sehingga dapat meluap dari sebuah cangkir datar melalui pori-pori yang teramat kecil. Fenomena lainnya adalah helium-3 ini dapat melawan gaya gravitasi Bumi. Atas penemuan-nya ini, Osherhof bersama kedua rekannya mendapat hadiah Nobel pada tahun 1996. His blood pressure also decreases, until it become normal again. However, because he does not exhale the air pressure in his lungs remain at the value it had at depth L. This pressure difference can explode his lungs. Besides that, his blood pressure decrease drastically which then carries the air to the heart. This two things can kill that novice diver.
