Why we’re doing it
People are having billions of conversations every single day on Facebook about topics that are
relevant to marketers. In fact, there are 4.75 billion content items shared everyday on Facebook.1
Additionally, every single night during the U.S. prime time hours of 8-11pm, Facebook sees
between 88 and 100 million visitors.2
For brands and marketers, this represents a real opportunity to participate in conversations in a
meaningful, relevant and timely way. The launch of hashtags is Facebook’s first step to facilitate
real-time discovery of these conversations around specific topics or interests. For marketers,
this is only the beginning—we will continue to invest in building additional functionality as we
learn more about how people use hashtags on Facebook.

Hashtags on Facebook
How Facebook hashtags work
Facebook hashtags will now appear as
clickable links in desktop posts. Clicking on
a hashtag will open up a feed where you’ll
see stories from the Pages and people who
have posted with the same hashtag. People
can also find posts related to specific topics
or interests by searching on Facebook for
relevant hashtags.
People and Pages can create hashtags by
writing a status update. If you use a hashtag
in an app that publishes to Facebook then
your hashtags in those posts will become links
on Facebook.

What you can do
Hashtags do not impact your distribution or engagement in News Feed on either desktop or
mobile, so we do not recommend all marketers adopt hashtags at this time. However, if you
are already using hashtags to drive business objectives, we recommend the following best
practices:
• Amplify your message using Facebook advertising
• Creative best practices on Facebook still apply—compelling copy and photography
that is in the brand voice tend to garner better response and engagement rates
• If you have an existing publishing strategy that uses a hashtag—on Facebook or third
party sites, including Instagram or Twitter—that campaign will also work on Facebook
• Any hashtags that you post elsewhere through linked third party sites will
automatically populate on Facebook
• Insights or trending topics are not yet available, but you can view the real-time public
conversation about your business by searching for relevant hashtags
Frequently asked questions
Is it possible to target ads to users based on the hashtags they’ve used?
At this time we don’t support hashtag targeting for Facebook advertising.
Can a brand own their hashtag?
Brands aren’t able to purchase the hashtags associated with their business.
Is it possible to pay to promote a hashtag?
We don’t currently offer the option for marketers to promote a specific hashtag. However, if
you’d like a post that you’ve created containing a hashtag to receive more distribution, we
recommend promoting the post.
What happens if I run an ad with a hashtag in it?
Only hashtags that appear in ads being delivered in News Feed will be clickable. Only desktop
News Feed ads can include functioning hashtags, since hashtags are only clickable on desktop.
What’s next for hashtags on Facebook?
While Facebook does not currently support hashtags on mobile, trending topics, insights, or
paid opportunities associated with hashtags, this is just the beginning. We’re continuing to
invest in the hashtag experience on Facebook for both people and marketers.

Why we’re doing it People are having billions of conversations every single day on Facebook about topics that are relevant to marketers. In fact, there are 4.75 billion content items shared everyday on Facebook.1 Additionally, every single night during the U.S. prime time hours of 8-11pm, Facebook sees between 88 and 100 million visitors.2 For brands and marketers, this represents a real opportunity to participate in conversations in a meaningful, relevant and timely way. The launch of hashtags is Facebook’s first step to facilitate real-time discovery of these conversations around specific topics or interests. For marketers, this is only the beginning—we will continue to invest in building additional functionality as we learn more about how people use hashtags on Facebook. 1 Facebook internal data, May 2013 2 Facebook internal data, June 2013 Hashtags on Facebook How Facebook hashtags work Facebook hashtags will now appear as clickable links in desktop posts. Clicking on a hashtag will open up a feed where you’ll see stories from the Pages and people who have posted with the same hashtag. People can also find posts related to specific topics or interests by searching on Facebook for relevant hashtags. People and Pages can create hashtags by writing a status update. If you use a hashtag in an app that publishes to Facebook then your hashtags in those posts will become links on Facebook.

What you can do Hashtags do not impact your distribution or engagement in News Feed on either desktop or mobile, so we do not recommend all marketers adopt hashtags at this time. However, if you are already using hashtags to drive business objectives, we recommend the following best practices: • Amplify your message using Facebook advertising • Creative best practices on Facebook still apply—compelling copy and photography that is in the brand voice tend to garner better response and engagement rates • If you have an existing publishing strategy that uses a hashtag—on Facebook or third party sites, including Instagram or Twitter—that campaign will also work on Facebook • Any hashtags that you post elsewhere through linked third party sites will automatically populate on Facebook • Insights or trending topics are not yet available, but you can view the real-time public conversation about your business by searching for relevant hashtags Frequently asked questions Is it possible to target ads to users based on the hashtags they’ve used? At this time we don’t support hashtag targeting for Facebook advertising. Can a brand own their hashtag? Brands aren’t able to purchase the hashtags associated with their business. Is it possible to pay to promote a hashtag? We don’t currently offer the option for marketers to promote a specific hashtag. However, if you’d like a post that you’ve created containing a hashtag to receive more distribution, we recommend promoting the post. What happens if I run an ad with a hashtag in it? Only hashtags that appear in ads being delivered in News Feed will be clickable. Only desktop News Feed ads can include functioning hashtags, since hashtags are only clickable on desktop. What’s next for hashtags on Facebook? While Facebook does not currently support hashtags on mobile, trending topics, insights, or paid opportunities associated with hashtags, this is just the beginning. We’re continuing to invest in the hashtag experience on Facebook for both people and marketers.
