2. Anxiety Disorders and
the use of Xanax
• In the United States alone
there are 18.1% of the
American Population age 18
years and older who are
diagnosed with an Anxiety
Disorder. (ADAA, 2019)
Generalized anxiety disorder
(GAD) is seen as extreme,
extravagant anxiety and worry
about commonplace events
without any obvious reasons
for worry.
3. The neurotransmitters
dopamine, norepinephrine
and gamma-aminobutyric
acid (GABA) are chemicals
in the brain that are
believed to be unbalanced
in those suffering from
anxiety disorders.
(Katharina Star, 2019)
4. Although there are many medications to
treat anxiety.
Xanax is the
#1
medicatio
n
of choice.
5. It is effective by
acting on all the
GABA receptors. It
initiates sedation,
muscle relaxation
all which link
towards
relaxation.
Thereby
decreasing anxiety.

7. Side Effects of
Xanax include
sedation, tiredness, dizziness, feeling
off balance, memory problems, dry
mouth and trembling
8. Pharmacokinetics of Xanax
by mouth and is easily
absorbed into the
proteins of plasma.
This is also where
most of the binding
occurs. (Naderia,
2019) Xanax crests
about one to two hours
later and is
metabolized in the
liver where it is then
excreted with the
urine.
• Xanax works by binding to a site
on the GABA neuron. A
receptor to enhance the affinity
of channel opening by the
agonist gamma-Aminobutyric
acid (GABA), which leads to
central nervous system
depression and allows a larger
amount of dopamine to go
inside.
9. binders
• Alcohol is the largest agent to interfere with the binding
of Xanax. If you drink more alcohol than the amount of
amount of Xanax you take, then you feel the Alcohol,
Alcohol, but if reversed the amount of Xanax becomes
becomes toxic and you may end up in a coma..(Naderia,
coma..(Naderia, 2019)
10. How to improve
Communication
• Communication, whether it is verbal,
online, over the phone, power point,
infographs, textbooks, journal articles is
intense. It will be important to remind
them that it is a scheduled IV narcotic, as a
sedative/hypnotic it will cause sedation.
That it is a benzodiazepine, one of the most
common drugs prescribed in America. The
potential addiction and abuse of the drug is
imperative when medicating, educating
and discharging a patient with this
prescription.
11. Gather
participants Educate Ask questions
And remember to always talk to your doctor about all
the medications you take.
To begin education at home…..
