1. Developing the concept was an essential part of our project as it
would influence the construction of a narrative and the
characters to be involved in the music video.
We wanted our video to portray a concept that would reflect an
aspect common in the society which should be countered or
demonstrated in order to raise awareness.
My team members and I sat down and discussed various
aspects on which the concept of our video could be based on.
There were abundant concepts that my team members and I
shortlisted which had a potential of uplifting our song. However,
the list had to be narrowed down considering the convenience
and strength of the Narrative. Here are three of the best ideas
from which we shall be shortlisting our final concept.
Idea:1)Prostitution
2. As Prostitutes are opposed intensely in the society (even though
there is no doubt in the fact that prostitution really is a filthy act
to indulge in), we considered showing an insight in the life of a
prostitute, who fell in love with a customer belonging to the elite
class. However, the family is reluctant to get their son married to
a prostitute due to the vast differences between the two
individuals. This would inculcate Prop’s Character theory,
having the two characters Lover. This would also
represent social differences.
However, we had to take into account that the narrative did not
seem to possess a very emotional appeal. Moreover, it would be
extremely difficult to find actors willing to play a role of the
prostitute making it impractical.
Idea:2)Society Stereotypes
3. Idea:3)Handicap
Stereotypes nowadays have become so intense which give
individuals labels that further turn into identity.
We plan to develop a narrative that would show the life of a
widow and how meaningless it is made by society.
The narrative would show totally opposite situations of the same
girl having an extraordinarily blessed life and chemistry while her
husband is alive. Her husband makes efforts to make her glad
and she dances for her husband in colorful clothes. However,
her life changes in an instant due to her Husband’s demise
where she is asked to devote her entire life mourning the demise
of her husband. It would indicate that society takes away the life
of a widow, even her basic human rights and not allowing widows
to live normally like others.
This narrative would inculcate Prop’s Character Theory of the
Lover and the Beloved.
Moreover, this narrative would also incorporate the
theory ‘Hero’s Journey’ as to portray widows being the actuals
heroes who go through various hardships and counter them
strongly. It would also reflect the theory of ‘Binary Oppositions’
symbolizing ‘Happiness & Sadness’.
Additionally, this narrative is very well coordinated with the song
symbolizing how colorless and sad life became for the widow.
However, it may be slightly complicated to plan out intense roles.
4. Idea:3)Handicap
Optimism is an element which is very rare as it is always
overlapped by the negativity. We wanted to make a music video
which would portray the element of positivity. This would not only
establish connectivity with the lyrics and beats of the song ‘Rang
De, Rang De, It would emphasize on the element of the
importance of having colours which portray feelings.
This narrative would pay tribute to Muniba Mazari, A renowned
social activist
We planned to portray optimism through a narrative revolving
around a woman who lost almost everything in a drastic car
accident. She was abandoned by her husband and given the
heart breaking news of never being able to become a mother
again. However, the lady gets back to life and does not let her
injuries and problems hinder her from achieving her dreams. She
starts to smile, she starts painting (adding back colors and
liveliness as a therapy)
This narrative would reflect the Equilibrium theory as the
couple who lives a content life gets destructed through the
accident which is the conflict. The story comes back to an
equilibrium as The Accident victim practices positivity, gives
5. hope and lives a better and relatively more wonderful life, hence
a happy ending.
The three ideas were discussed over a number of
meetings, trying to decide the most suitable and appealing idea.
