Halloween originated over 2,000 years ago among Celtic communities in Ireland, UK, and France who celebrated Samhain, believing the ghosts of the dead returned to earth on October 31st. When Christianity spread, All Saints' Day was introduced to replace Samhain. Irish immigrants brought Halloween traditions to America during the 19th century potato famine. Today, Halloween is celebrated as a fun holiday where children wear costumes, go trick-or-treating by knocking on doors saying "trick or treat" to receive candy, and participate in games like bobbing for apples at parties.
