When Dawn fussed, resisted, or showed frustration, Terry was patient and affectionate with her. She was able to coax Dawn out of her bad temper by making up little games that Dawn enjoyed. Both Terry and Bill liked Dawn’s spirited personality. Because her parents wanted her to have access to playmates, Dawn attended a church-related program for toddlers and preschoolers three mornings a week. When Dawn was 3 years old, Terry gave birth to the couple’s second child, a son named Darren. Soon after the baby’s birth, the family learned that Darren had a congenital heart problem that would require ongoing medical treatment and a specific regimen of care at home. Because of Darren’s need for medical care and the limitations of Bill’s medical insurance, the couple soon found themselves time to read to Dawn, to take her for walks, and to help her master tasks that proved frustrating, Terry now had to shift her attention to the care of her medically fragile infant. Because Dawn looked so grown-up compared to the vulnerable newborn, Terry began to perceive her daughter as able to do many things for herself. When Dawn demonstrated her neediness by clinging or whining, Terry became abrupt and demanded that Dawn stop. Working With Children and Adolescents: The Case of Dalia
Dalia is a 14-year-old, biracial female of African and Irish American descent who resides with her parents in a middle-class suburb. She is the youngest of three children and is currently the only child remaining in the home. Dalia’s parents have been married for 25 years. Dalia’s father works in the creative arts field with a nontraditional work schedule that has him gone overnight and sleeping late into the morning. Dalia’s mother is an executive who works long hours. Dalia was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia in early childhood and was hospitalized multiple times. At present, Dalia’s health is stable with the last serious episode occurring 2 years ago.
Dalia’s parents reported that until middle school, Dalia was an easygoing, good-natured youngster who enjoyed singing and participating in activities with her peers and family. Dalia denied any problems with drugs or alcohol but admitted to drinking with friends. Dalia described her family relationships as tense, stating, “My dad lets me do what I want” and “My mother is always trying to control me.” Dalia described her relationship with her older brother, who lives in another state, as “cool,” and her relationship with her older sister, a college sophomore, as “not cool.”
Dalia’s parents sought out counseling services for behavioral issues on the recommendation of her school. The issues included argumentative behavior with authority figures, physical altercations with peers, poor concentration in class, irritable mood, verbal combativeness when confronted, truancy, and highly sexualized behavior with male peers. At home, Dalia had become more argumentative and physically threatening. Her parents had discovered that she and her friends drank alcohol in their home. Dalia’s parents also reported that she was up most of the night and slept most of the day. They also reported that her mood was highly irritable and that she was extremely impulsive. She had no interest in getting involved with any extracurricular activities, stating that those things are “corny and boring.”
In the first meeting, Dalia and her mother both appeared agitated with each other and became argumentative when going through the intake information. Dalia quickly told me that she was not planning to talk about anything because this meeting was her parents’ idea. She stated, “I don’t have any problems, my parents do.” Soon into this first visit, Dalia blurted out that her mother was upset with her because she had just shown her a tattoo she had had done recently, purchased by using a fake ID. I acknowledged her news and asked if this was the way that she usually shared important information with her mother. Dalia shrugged and stated, “I don’t know. I figure I better her tell her now.

She is the youngest of three children and is currently the only child remaining in the home. Dalia’s parents have been married for 25 years. Dalia’s father works in the creative arts field with a nontraditional work schedule that has him gone overnight and sleeping late into the morning. Dalia’s mother is an executive who works long hours. Dalia was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia in early childhood and was hospitalized multiple times. At present, Dalia’s health is stable with the last serious episode occurring 2 years ago.
Dalia’s parents reported that until middle school, Dalia was an easygoing, good-natured youngster who enjoyed singing and participating in activities with her peers and family. Dalia denied any problems with drugs or alcohol but admitted to drinking with friends. COU 680 Week Eight Case Study: Nora
Nora is a 41-year-old African American single mother of two young boys, ages 8 and 10. She and her
sons recently evacuated from their home ahead of a major hurricane. They stayed with relatives for two
weeks until they were able to return to their home safely. When they arrived home, they found their
house uninhabitable—a tree had fallen on the house, which led to significant flooding and structural
damage. They will need to live elsewhere until the home can be repaired. While they have made short-
term arrangements to go back to her family’s house, Nora is unsure how long they will be displaced and
is particularly concerned about the commute to her sons’ school and her work. To make matters worse,
she has been formally reprimanded at work for taking time off to meet with the insurance adjuster and
construction team.
Nora is presenting with symptoms of hopelessness, tearfulness, and despair. She feels overwhelmed at
the loss she and her sons have faced and her perceived powerlessness to fix the situation. She notes
feeling disengaged at work and unable to focus in many areas of her life.
History
Nora has been a single mother for the past four years. She and her ex-husband divorced after her
husband’s infidelity, and she and her sons remained in the home. Her ex-husband moved out of town
two years ago and maintains somewhat regular communication with his sons—engaging with them on
social media, speaking to them by phone roughly once a month, and seeing them every six months. Nora
reports that although she has “no hard feelings” toward her ex-husband and strives to have a good co-
parenting relationship, they do not maintain contact outside of his communication with the boys, and he
is not a source of financial or emotional support to her.
Nora has been employed as the general manager of a small chain of local restaurants for the past two-
years. Prior to that she held the manager position for one of the restaurants for nearly ten years. Nora is
hardworking and prides herself on doing a good job, providing strong support and mentorship to her
team, and supporting the local community and its patrons. The recent hurricane has had a dramatic
impact on her work life as well, destroying one of the restaurants and leaving many of her employees
without a job. She has been charged by the restaurant owners to help in the effort to rebuild, which has
only created more strain on her emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Developmental Considerations
Nora was raised as the middle child of three siblings. She reports being close to her siblings and parents
throughout her childhood and being a highly sociable child. She indicates no physical traumas or
developmental delays, but does report that she lost her mother to breast cancer when she was 18 years

To equally look into the life of Bailey, she is still at the tender age for her to decide on making her personal decisions and for the choices that she may make for her life may not help her for the long term planning of her life and for the success of herself. Her deciding to stay with her grandmother madam Karen could be the best option for herself and for the good parental care of her older grandmother, but things turn not to be the way we expect. I could stand strong to blame the grandmother for not having a firm stand to stop Bailey from moves again from her place to find shelter at her friends’ places.
In this case, I can say, it is the poor parental care by her parents both the mother and the grandmother that did not set a good foundation on how to care for their family members such that Bailey is left with all the freedom to move from one place to another without being cautioned and being seriously summoned over the same (Emery, 2012). We as the audience to the case study, we don’t find the clear evidence of what might have been the indifference between Bailey and her stepfather. This is the most critical path that we should find to know and get to find the solution form that point of view.
The foundation of the issues that Bailey is facing could be originating from the inner cycle of their parental and guidance system that we can say lack clear principles of good parenting and social care for the family members. I could have started by knowing what could be the issue that keeps Bailey outside the brackets of their family with her claim that she does not get in terms with her stepfather. After receiving some support when they first arrived, the children attend school and Rifat found work as a
mechanic. However some months ago he witnessed a violent crime at the business next door. He was
involved in providing a witness statement to the police, however since then he has not been able to return

Scenario
Taneka, a 17-year-old African-American female, is a high school junior. She is the oldest of three siblings living with her single-parent mother. Her mother has worked for the past 15 years at a manufacturing plant. Her father has not been a part of Taneka's life.
As the oldest child, Taneka has held major responsibilities throughout her life to support her working mother, such as caring for her younger siblings: Derrick, now age 14, and Kenya, age 12. These early duties reinforced development of her natural leadership skills. Taneka has been recognized from an early age for being mature, responsible, and dependable. As her siblings have grown, she has been able to have part-time jobs, most recently as a salesperson at a teen fashion store in the local mall. It was here that she first realized she had a knack for dealing with people, and they responded well to her—employers, co-workers, and customers alike. She was recently approached by her supervisor to consider participating in the company's employee leadership training program.
This has caused Taneka to start thinking about post-secondary education possibilities. Previously she had thought college was out of her reach, due to the limited financial resources of her family and no history of anyone in her family ever attending college. As such, she had not previously given much importance to her grades. Rather than participating in extracurricular school activities, she focused on working. She is on track for graduating with her class next year and has a current grade point average of 2.05.
Taneka is now questioning her previous assumption about college or other post-secondary educational possibilities, but she does not have a clear idea of what she would like to pursue as a career. Choosing a career and a post-secondary program to prepare for it, seeking financial support, and navigating the admissions procedure all remain mysteries to her.

The ability to view ourselves from an unbiased perspective allows us to critically assess our personal strengths and weaknesses. This is an important step in the process of finding the right resources for our personal learning style. Ego and pride can be a hard thing to overcome, but I have found that reaching out for help provides endless benefits. I have found myself hesitant to ask for help in a professional setting. Because I am much younger than many of my coworkers, I feel a constant need to prove my worth. I feel as though my asking for help can be interpreted as an inability to perform my job duties effectively. I have since found out that this is not the case and in return, I am better equipped to do my job. If we are able to overcome the fear of putting our pride aside and asking for help, we will reap many benefits on the path to success. Overall, the ability to focus on the right things allows us to be better prepared to take advantage of critical opportunities.
After reviewing the multitude of online amenities provided at SNHU I feel better prepared to continue my work as a student. I plan on utilizing the Smarthinking 24-hour tutoring service as well as the drop off paper review. I think this is an amazing resource to have available that encourages students to ask for help when it is needed. The ability to get help from our peers is a tool I believe to be instrumental to success. It is reassuring to know that I have multiple resources at my disposal during this time in which I continue to further my education.

I think being able to use resources to help you succeed is a great characteristic to have. Sometimes in the past I have been too stubborn in my ways to be able to ask for help or use resources to help me and have not done as well as I had intended.
I think knowing more about you will allow you to be able to choose the right resources, because knowing the most about yourself allows you to know which resources you will benefit the most from. I have always struggled in math; it has never been my strong suit. When I first attempted to go to college right after I graduated from high school, I really struggled with the math course I was assigned. My school provided us with a resource called Math Lab. It was mandatory to complete one hour a week there. However, when I knew I needed more time and more assistance with what I was learning I decided not to reach out for help. Looking back, I am not sure why I refused to use more resources. I think I would have been more successful at my first attempt at college if I put my pride to the side .

eration is raised. Raising children in today’s society can mean many different things. Our goal
in this book is to explore family styles and dynamics, child development, and the rich diversity
of today’s families. Understanding how children develop and interact with their families and
communities will help you anticipate challenges and develop effective strategies for working
with children and their families.
This chapter will provide a foundation for many of the concepts we will discuss throughout
this book, starting with definitions of what it means to be a family and an exploration of family
functions and structures. The second section of this chapter will cover some of the key eras
in American history that have affected how families formed, developed, and operated. In the
third and final section of this chapter, we will examine how changes to the idea of family have
influenced traditional family roles and larger societal trends. Keep an open mind as you read
this chapter and be prepared to challenge what you know about families.
1.1 Understanding the Family
Understanding how families evolve and function in society is critical to being able to work
effectively with them. This first section is intended to serve as a foundation for many of the
concepts discussed throughout this book. In our quest to understand family, we will begin by
attempting to define family. We will begin this quest by meeting Todd and Sharon in the fol-
lowing The Evolving Family feature box. Todd and Sharon are members of two types of fami-
lies we will follow throughout this chapter.

Families are generally viewed as the primary unit in which children are raised and learn

Dalia’s father works in the creative arts field with a nontraditional work schedule that has him gone overnight and sleeping late into the morning. Dalia’s mother is an executive who works long hours. Dalia was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia in early childhood and was hospitalized multiple times. At present, Dalia’s health is stable with the last serious episode occurring 2 years ago.

COU 680 Week Eight Case Study: Nora
Nora is a 41-year-old African American single mother of two young boys, ages 8 and 10. She and her
sons recently evacuated from their home ahead of a major hurricane. They stayed with relatives for two
weeks until they were able to return to their home safely. When they arrived home, they found their
house uninhabitable—a tree had fallen on the house, which led to significant flooding and structural
damage. They will need to live elsewhere until the home can be repaired. While they have made short-
term arrangements to go back to her family’s house, Nora is unsure how long they will be displaced and
is particularly concerned about the commute to her sons’ school and her work. To make matters worse,
she has been formally reprimanded at work for taking time off to meet with the insurance adjuster and
construction team.
Nora is presenting with symptoms of hopelessness, tearfulness, and despair. She feels overwhelmed at
the loss she and her sons have faced and her perceived powerlessness to fix the situation. She notes
feeling disengaged at work and unable to focus in many areas of her life.
History
Nora has been a single mother for the past four years. She and her ex-husband divorced after her
husband’s infidelity, and she and her sons remained in the home. Her ex-husband moved out of town
two years ago and maintains somewhat regular communication with his sons—engaging with them on
social media, speaking to them by phone roughly once a month, and seeing them every six months. Nora
reports that although she has “no hard feelings” toward her ex-husband and strives to have a good co-
parenting relationship, they do not maintain contact outside of his communication with the boys, and he
is not a source of financial or emotional support to her.
Nora has been employed as the general manager of a small chain of local restaurants for the past two-
years. Prior to that she held the manager position for one of the restaurants for nearly ten years. Nora is
hardworking and prides herself on doing a good job, providing strong support and mentorship to her
team, and supporting the local community and its patrons. The recent hurricane has had a dramatic
impact on her work life as well, destroying one of the restaurants and leaving many of her employees
without a job. She has been charged by the restaurant owners to help in the effort to rebuild, which has
only created more strain on her emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Developmental Considerations
Nora was raised as the middle child of three siblings. She reports being close to her siblings and parents
throughout her childhood and being a highly sociable child. She indicates no physical traumas or
developmental delays, but does report that she lost her mother to breast cancer when she was 18 years

Bailey being a tender girl has the capacity of getting a good education, access to information, good healthcare, and good parental care. From the case, we can realize that the lady is facing a challenge of parental care and she does not have a stable place or home to stay according to the context in the case study. Therefore, as a counsellor, I would advise the lady to get home and find the peace of her mind at her family’s care and support. Therefore, this paper will discuss in details how Bailey may be helped to meet her life objectives (Bourke, & Ready-Ed Publications, 2004).
To equally look into the life of Bailey, she is still at the tender age for her to decide on making her personal decisions and for the choices that she may make for her life may not help her for the long term planning of her life and for the success of herself. Her deciding to stay with her grandmother madam Karen could be the best option for herself and for the good parental care of her older grandmother, but things turn not to be the way we expect. I could stand strong to blame the grandmother for not having a firm stand to stop Bailey from moves again from her place to find shelter at her friends’ places.
In this case, I can say, it is the poor parental care by her parents both the mother and the grandmother that did not set a good foundation on how to care for their family members such that Bailey is left with all the freedom to move from one place to another without being cautioned and being seriously summoned over the same (Emery, 2012). We as the audience to the case study, we don’t find the clear evidence of what might have been the indifference between Bailey and her stepfather. This is the most critical path that we should find to know and get to find the solution form that point of view.
The foundation of the issues that Bailey is facing could be originating from the inner cycle of their parental and guidance system that we can say lack clear principles of good parenting and social care for the family members. I could have started by knowing what could be the issue that keeps Bailey outside the brackets of their family with her claim that she does not get in terms with her stepfather. In the application of the psychosocial theory of human learning and behaviour change, I would wish to monitor and find out the problem by sitting down with Bailey and trying to find out her problem. active in Syria and after he disappeared, local authorities began to target his family members. After a long
and arduous journey the family travelled to a refugee camp in Turkey before being accepted to come to
Australia.
After receiving some support when they first arrived, the children attend school and Rifat found work as a
mechanic. However some months ago he witnessed a violent crime at the business next door. He was
involved in providing a witness statement to the police, however since then he has not been able to return
to work and lost his job. He is increasingly spending time at home and does not allow visitors. Maya’s English
is limited and she does not have employment but has formed has some close friendships with families from

As the oldest child, Taneka has held major responsibilities throughout her life to support her working mother, such as caring for her younger siblings: Derrick, now age 14, and Kenya, age 12. These early duties reinforced development of her natural leadership skills. Taneka has been recognized from an early age for being mature, responsible, and dependable. As her siblings have grown, she has been able to have part-time jobs, most recently as a salesperson at a teen fashion store in the local mall. It was here that she first realized she had a knack for dealing with people, and they responded well to her—employers, co-workers, and customers alike. She was recently approached by her supervisor to consider participating in the company's employee leadership training program.
This has caused Taneka to start thinking about post-secondary education possibilities. Previously she had thought college was out of her reach, due to the limited financial resources of her family and no history of anyone in her family ever attending college. As such, she had not previously given much importance to her grades. Rather than participating in extracurricular school activities, she focused on working. She is on track for graduating with her class next year and has a current grade point average of 2.05.

The ability to view ourselves from an unbiased perspective allows us to critically assess our personal strengths and weaknesses. This is an important step in the process of finding the right resources for our personal learning style. Ego and pride can be a hard thing to overcome, but I have found that reaching out for help provides endless benefits. I have found myself hesitant to ask for help in a professional setting. Because I am much younger than many of my coworkers, I feel a constant need to prove my worth. I feel as though my asking for help can be interpreted as an inability to perform my job duties effectively. I have since found out that this is not the case and in return, I am better equipped to do my job. If we are able to overcome the fear of putting our pride aside and asking for help, we will reap many benefits on the path to success. I think being able to use resources to help you succeed is a great characteristic to have. Sometimes in the past I have been too stubborn in my ways to be able to ask for help or use resources to help me and have not done as well as I had intended.
I think knowing more about you will allow you to be able to choose the right resources, because knowing the most about yourself allows you to know which resources you will benefit the most from. I have always struggled in math; it has never been my strong suit. When I first attempted to go to college right after I graduated from high school, I really struggled with the math course I was assigned. My school provided us with a resource called Math Lab. It was mandatory to complete one hour a week there. However, when I knew I needed more time and more assistance with what I was learning I decided not to reach out for help. Looking back, I am not sure why I refused to use more resources. I think I would have been more successful at my first attempt at college if I put my pride to the side .

This chapter will provide a foundation for many of the concepts we will discuss throughout
this book, starting with definitions of what it means to be a family and an exploration of family
functions and structures. The second section of this chapter will cover some of the key eras
in American history that have affected how families formed, developed, and operated. In the
third and final section of this chapter, we will examine how changes to the idea of family have
influenced traditional family roles and larger societal trends. Keep an open mind as you read
this chapter and be prepared to challenge what you know about families.
1.1 Understanding the Family
Understanding how families evolve and function in society is critical to being able to work
effectively with them. This first section is intended to serve as a foundation for many of the
concepts discussed throughout this book. In our quest to understand family, we will begin by

Materials challenges for
nuclear systems
The safe and economical operation of any nuclear power system relies
to a great extent, on the success of the fuel and the materials of
construction. During the lifetime of a nuclear power system which
currently can be as long as 60 years, the materials are subject to high
temperature, a corrosive environment, and damage from high-energy
particles released during fission. The fuel which provides the power for
the reactor has a much shorter life but is subject to the same types of
harsh environments. This article reviews the environments in which fuels
and materials from current and proposed nuclear systems operate and
then describes how the creation of the Advanced Test Reactor National
Scientific User Facility is allowing researchers from across the United
States to test their ideas for improved fuels and materials.

Successful operation of current light water reactors and
implementation of advanced nuclear energy systems is strongly
dependent on the performance of fuels and materials. A typical
Light Water Reactor (LWR) contains numerous types of materials
(Fig. 1) that must all perform successfully. A majority of the
LWRs in the U.S. are extending their operating licenses from a 40
year period to a 60 year period, with initial discussions about 80
year lifetimes now underway. Many proposed advanced systems
(also known as Generation IV systems) anticipate operation at
temperatures and radiation exposures that are beyond current
nuclear industry experience, as well as most previous experience
with developmental systems1-7.
Table 1 summarizes the expected environments during normal
operation for the six Generation IV systems. For comparison, the
operating conditions for a Pressurized Water Reactor (a type of light
water reactor) are also listed. The Generation IV systems are expected
to operate at higher temperatures, to higher radiation doses, at
higher pressures, and in some cases with coolants that present more
challenging corrosion problems than current LWRs. Generation IV
systems are expected to operate for at least 60 years.

Extending the McCumber Cube
to Model Network Defense

This article proposes an extension to the McCumber
Cube information security model to determine the best
countermeasures to achieve a desired security goal.
Confidentiality, integrity, and availability are the se-curity services of a system. In other words they are the security goals of system defense, intangible at-
tributes� providing assurances for the information protected.
Each service is realized when the appropriate countermea-
sures for a given information state are in place. But, it is not
enough to select countermeasures ad hoc. Countermeasures
should be selected to defend a system and its information
against specific types of attacks. When attacks against partic-
ular information states are considered, the necessary coun-
termeasures can be selected to achieve the desired security
service or goal. This article proposes an extension to the Mc-
Cumber Cube information security model as a way for the
security practitioner to consider the best countermeasures to
achieve the desired security goal.
Security models
Models are useful tools to help understand complex topics. A
well-developed model can often be represented graphically,
allowing a deeper understanding of the relationships of the
components that make the whole. A formal security model
is broadly applicable and rigorously developed using formal
methods.2 In contrast, an informal model is considered lack-
ing one or both of these qualities. There are a variety of in-
formal models in the information security world which are
regularly used by security practitioners to understand basic
information and concepts.
� Security goals often lack explicit definitions and are difficult to quantify. They are
usually based on policies with broad interpretations and tend to be qualitative. It is
true that security goals emerge from the confluence of information states and coun-
termeasures which have measurable attributes. But, the subjective nature of security
goals combined with informal modeling characterizes their attributes as intangible.

One such informal model is the generally accepted risk as-
sessment framework. This model is used to assess risk by
estimating asset values, vulnerabilities, threats with their
likelihood of exploiting a vulnerability, and losses. Figure �
illustrates this model. Note that this commonly used model
requires a substantial amount of estimating on the part of
the risk assessment participants. This is problematic when
reliable estimates cannot be obtained. Another problem with

tain types of hazards,” Shearman said.
Beyond life safety risks, certain tenants might be more susceptible than
previous tenants to codes and regulations imposed by state or federal laws,
such as licensing regulations for daycares or American Disabilities Act re-
quirements for medical tenants, said Pat Pollan, CPM, principal at Pollan
Hausman Real Estate Services in Houston.
New-use tenant risks don’t stop there: financial risks also exist. Replac-
ing a unique tenant with a similar occupant after the lease expires can be
difficult—a particular concern if a lot of money was spent customizing the
space for an alternative use.

The Rise of the Republican Party
The Republican Party was formed due to a split in the Whig Party. The anti-slavery
“Conscience Whigs” split from the pro-slavery “Cotton Whigs”. Some anti-slavery Whigs joined
the American “Know-Nothing” Party, while the remainder joined with independent Democrats
and Free-Soilers to form a new party, the Republicans. The initial members stood for one
principle: the exclusion of slavery from the western territories (Shi, p. 462). Knowing the
Republicans ideology, we will look at how the events leading up to the Kansas-Nebraska Act led
to greater political division that eventually caused the formation of the Republican Party and it’s
rise to the presidency in 1860.
In the 1850’s, America was becoming increasingly divided between those for and against
slavery. The Compromise of 1850 had temporarily appeased both sides by admitting California
as a free state, allowing no slavery restrictions in New Mexico and Utah, paying Texas,
abolishing slave trade but no slavery in the District of Columbia, establishing the Fugitive Slave
Act, and denying congress authority to interfere with interstate slave trade (Shi, p. 457). This
Fugitive Slave Act was highly contested, although very few slaves were returned to the south
under this Act. In fact, it ended up uniting anti-slavery people, more than aiding the South. It was
during this time that Uncle Tom’s Cabin was written, selling more than a million copies
worldwide and detailing the harsh brutality of slavery (Shi, p. 460-461).
In the mid-1850’s, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed. The main reason for it was to the
settle the vast territory west of Missouri and Iowa, and to create a transcontinental railroad to
capitalize on Asian markets and goods. New territories brought up questions of whether slavery
would be allowed, with many supporting “popular sovereignty” where voters chose whether they
would have slavery or not. The issue here was that the 1820 Missouri Compromise had said there
would be no new slaver.

Narrative Balance: The Prologue begins with sentence #1 and ends with sentence #3. The Central Issue begins with sentence #4 and ends with sentence #9. The Epilogue begins with sentence #10 and ends with sentence #14. Thus the breakdown is:
Prologue = 3 sentences
Central Issue = 6 sentences
Epilogue = 5 sentences
The narrative is somewhat unbalanced due to the short Prologue and thus can be considered to be possibly deceptive on its face. It is not unbalanced enough to say this conclusively.
Mean Length of Unit:
The narrative has 14 sentences and 237 words, thus giving a MLU of 16.9 rounded to 17. Thus any sentences 23 words or longer and any sentences 11 words or less can be considered deceptive on their face.
Structure of Analysis:

On July 18th, 1969, at approximately 11:15 P.M. in Chappaquiddick, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, I was driving my car on Main Street on my way to get the ferry back to Edgartown.
30 words – Deceptive on its face. There is no mention of the passenger in this sentence. All of the pronouns are singular. It is “my car” “on my way”, etc. When the passenger is mentioned later, it is almost an afterthought. The deception in this sentence may be the last part of the sentence where he relates why he was driving the car. He very well may have been driving for some reason other than to get the ferry. This would be an area to be further explored in an interview.

I was unfamiliar with the road and turned right onto Dike Road, instead of bearing hard left on Main Street.
20 words. “I was unfamiliar with the road” is an explanatory phrase telling us why he ended up on Dike Road. The phrase “instead of bearing hard left on Main Street” is a strange way of phrasing. Most people would say something like “instead of staying on Main Street.”

After proceeding for approximately one-half mile on Dike Road I descended a hill and came upon a narrow bridge.
20 words. There is nothing particularly deceptive about this sentence. The phrasing of the sentence is very formal. The phrasing is almost like a police type report or a legal/lawyer way of phrasing. It also appears that the phrase “came upon a narrow bridge” is almost a passive way of phrasing that indicates he was taken by surprise and had no control over what he was doing.

Soon after the baby’s birth, the family learned that Darren had a congenital heart problem that would require ongoing medical treatment and a specific regimen of care at home. Darren was an irritable baby. He fussed for long periods and was very difficult for Terry to soothe. Because of Darren’s need for medical care and the limitations of Bill’s medical insurance, the couple soon found themselves time to read to Dawn, to take her for walks, and to help her master tasks that proved frustrating, Terry now had to shift her attention to the care of her medically fragile infant. Because Dawn looked so grown-up compared to the vulnerable newborn, Terry began to perceive her daughter as able to do many things for herself. When Dawn demonstrated her neediness by clinging or whining, Terry became abrupt and demanded that Dawn stop. Many battles revolved around Terry’s new rule that Dawn have a nap or “quiet time” each afternoon so that mother and baby could get some rest. One day, Dawn’s preschool teacher, Mrs. Adams, asked to speak with Terry. Mrs. Adams noted that Dawn’s behavior was becoming a problem in the morning preschool sessions. Dawn had begun throwing toys when she became upset and often refused to cooperate in group activities. Terry was greatly embarrassed to hear about her daughter’s misbehavior.
